Abstract
Background: Gatekeeper training (GKT) programs improve knowledge and self-efficacy in suicide prevention, but the sustainability of these improvements is uncertain. While booster sessions are suggested to enhance retention, existing research is inconclusive. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of booster sessions in the LifeKeepers GKT program for maintaining long-term knowledge and self-efficacy at 6 months post-training. Method: A total of 1,732 participants who had completed LifeKeepers GKT were randomly assigned to one of three trial groups, an intervention (booster), control (training as usual), or attention control group. Participants completed measures of knowledge and self-efficacy at 3, 6, and 12 months and reported their frequency of interventions and referrals at 3 and 6 months. Results: No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of knowledge retention, self-efficacy, or behavior change at any follow-up point. However, sustained improvements were observed across all groups. Limitations: Ceiling effects and attrition may have influenced the findings. Conclusion: Booster sessions did not significantly enhance knowledge, self-efficacy, or behavior outcomes. All groups demonstrated sustained improvements, but ceiling effects and attrition caution against overinterpreting the findings. Further research is needed to explore effective strategies for long-term retention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Suicide prevention gatekeeper training (GKT) is considered an important component of an overall suicide-prevention strategy. The primary aim of this study was to conduct the first robust review of systematic reviews of GKT to examine the overall effectiveness of GKT on knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, behavioral intentions, and behavioral change. The study also examined the extent to which outcomes were retained long term, the frequency of refresher sessions, and the effectiveness of GKT with Indigenous populations and e-learning delivery. METHODS For this review of reviews, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase; and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched. ROBIS was applied to assess risk of bias and findings were synthesized using narrative synthesis. RESULTS Six systematic reviews were included comprising 61 studies, of which only 10 were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Immediate positive effects of GKT on knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy were confirmed, including for interventions tailored for Indigenous communities. Evidence was mixed for change in attitude; few studies measured e-learning GKT, retention of outcomes, booster sessions, behavioral intentions, and behavioral change, with some positive results. CONCLUSIONS Evidence supports the immediate effects of GKT but highlights a need for more high-quality RCTs, particularly for Indigenous and e-learning GKT. This review identified a concerning lack of long-term follow-up assessments at multiple time points, which could capture behavioral change and a significant gap in studies focused on post-training interventions that maintain GKT effects over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evidence for Gatekeeper Training (GKT) has shown that training outcomes are generally maintained at follow-up. Research on how improvements in GKT outcomes translate to intervention behavior is inconclusive, and some studies show that despite significant positive effects on GKT outcomes, there is no effect on GK behaviors. METHOD A non-experimental pre-post and follow-up survey design was used with a sample of 60 participants who voluntarily completed one of 12 half-day (4-hour) GKT sessions. Path Analysis was applied to pre- and post-intervention training outcomes, and a third model assessed the behavioral effect of the change in participant scores from pre- to post. RESULTS Suicide prevention knowledge retained by participants at 6-months after GKT was predictive of increased GK behavior in the 6-months following GKT. Knowledge at follow-up was the only significant predictor of behavior (p < .05), no other regression pathways were significant. CONCLUSIONS Gatekeeper preparedness, efficacy, and reluctance outcomes were not predictive of GK behavior. The findings of this study represent a lack of understanding regarding how the specific aims of GKT are translated into intervention behavior to identify, intervene, support, and refer potentially at-risk individuals.

Abstract
Background: While Gatekeeper Training (GKT) is an accepted component of suicide prevention strategies, there is little evidence about its effectiveness with Indigenous populations and online. Aims: This study examined the effects of LifeKeepers, a novel GKT, comprising three modalities: General, e-learning, and a culturally tailored Māori (New Zealand Indigenous) training. Methods: A total of 5,981 participants completed measures of declarative knowledge, perceived knowledge, and self-efficacy pre- and post-training. Participants rated satisfaction with LifeKeepers, its safety considerations and cultural acceptability post-training. Results: There were statistically significant improvements across all outcome measures (declarative knowledge 1.3 [95% CI 1.3-1.4], perceived knowledge 10.9 [95% CI 10.7-11.1], and self-efficacy 2.5 [95% CI 2.5-2.6]), including across all modalities. More than 90% of participants rated satisfaction, cultural acceptability, and safety considerations highly. Limitations: Without a control group, changes may not be solely due to engagement in LifeKeepers. Conclusions: This study offers preliminary evidence of the immediate effectiveness of LifeKeepers, across its in-person, Indigenous Māori, and e-learning modalities. It addresses a critical literature gap by exploring participants' safety perspectives and strongly supports LifeKeepers as a primary suicide prevention intervention in New Zealand, especially for Indigenous Māori communities. Comparable outcomes for e-learning participants indicate wider accessibility, bolstering suicide prevention efforts.

Abstract
Although suicide prevention trainings (SPT) have been a standard approach for suicide prevention for years, researchers have noted a need for more clarity in the definition of core competencies for SPTs, particularly in the areas of diversity and culture. Recent research has identified key theoretically- and empirically-based cultural considerations for suicide prevention, but translation is needed to infuse these standards for culture-related competencies into SPTs. This study performed a systematic literature review with a thematic synthesis analytic approach to establish a set of curricular guidelines for infusion of cultural considerations into SPTs. The study also examined the extent to which existing community trainings already incorporate cultural components. Based on the thematic synthesis of 39 SPT studies from 2010 to 2020 and seminal reviews of the cultural and suicide literature, results identified three overarching categories of cultural curricular competencies (suicide knowledge and awareness, suicide intervention skills, and curriculum delivery) and 14 core cultural curricular subthemes for community trainings (e.g., culturally informed risk factors and warning signs, systemic inequities, etc.). These three categories with 14 core cultural curricular competencies comprise the Culturally Infused Curricular Framework (CICF) for Suicide Prevention Trainings. The majority of trainings (62%) included five or less out of 14 total possible core cultural competencies in their training curricula, pointing to insufficient integration of cultural components in existing community trainings. This study's research-based guideline establishes a culture-inclusive framework to strengthen content and approach of community trainings and suicide prevention across cultural groups.

Abstract
The disclosure decision-making model (DD-MM) has been heavily explored within its initially proposed scope. Fewer known studies have tested the DD-MM's boundaries by assessing the model's application beyond close personal relationships, and none have explored it in a context outside of long-term health conditions. The current study investigates the disclosure decision-making process of patients to their healthcare providers when they experience situational confusion. A primarily quantitative online survey analyzed data from 251 U.S. adults who felt confusion during a recent appointment with their healthcare provider. Findings indicate that, although stigma and perceived disclosure efficacy impacted patient confusion disclosure as anticipated, anticipated response and relational quality (i.e., receiver assessments) did not play a significant role in disclosure. Stigma, anticipated response, and perceived disclosure efficacy were all related to remaining patient confusion as expected. This study contributes to our understanding of the scope of disclosure decision-making model as well as the to-date overlooked nuances of situational patient confusion: what impacts confusion disclosure and its likelihood to remain beyond the appointment's end. Limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.

Abstract
This study explores the factors involved in the capacity of newly trained suicide prevention gatekeepers to engage in the identification and support of people at risk of suicide. In-depth telephone interviews were conducted with 18 gatekeepers from various settings who had participated in a larger quantitative study of the impact of gatekeeper training. Conventional content analysis was performed on the data collected. Participants said that gatekeeper training provided key information and legitimized their role. Previous experience with suicidal friends and family members motivated their involvement and helped them to engage with at-risk individuals. Support available from the setting, including attitudes toward suicide, resources for referrals and promotion of the gatekeeper activities, were instrumental in gatekeepers' ability to fulfill their role. Gatekeeper programs may benefit from adopting a comprehensive approach to gatekeeper helping behaviors by attending to their contextual influences, and the effects of gatekeepers' personal experiences.

Abstract
Objective: Describe the literature on suicide prevention initiatives (SPIs) in post-secondary settings internationally since 2010. Methods: A scoping review and bibliographic search were conducted across MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus. Two reviewers independently screened articles and extracted data in consultation with a community social work team. Included articles described SPIs in post-secondary settings. Secondary sources and articles unavailable in English were excluded. Results: After identifying 931 citations, 76 articles representing five continents were included. Included articles spanned 2010 to 2023. Most articles represented North America, used quantitative methods, and focused on gatekeepers. SPIs in post-secondary settings were characterized by standardized and commercially available training programs and a wide variety of 'in-house' initiatives unique to campus communities. Conclusions: The quantity of research on SPIs in post-secondary settings has not kept pace with escalating mental health issues and the extent to which suicide is an urgent public health issue for young adults.

Abstract
Suicide prevention training programs have spread rapidly within child and public-serving organizations, due to the alarming increase in youth suicide rates. Yet, within these organizations, roles and responsibilities can shape attitudes and intentions related to suicide prevention, thereby influencing the uptake of prevention efforts. As such, various organizational and individual factors can predict uptake, adoption, and maintenance of prevention efforts (Fixsen et al., 2005). To date, few studies have examined the service delivery context in understanding training effectiveness, especially as it relates to QPR (Question Persuade and Refer), one of the most widely disseminated suicide prevention gatekeeper programs. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to evaluate whether individual and organizational characteristics influenced the effectiveness and sustainability of training outcomes, and whether such differences existed among diverse child and public-serving delivery sectors. Several training outcomes that align with the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) were examined, including confidence, attitudes, social norms, and suicide prevention behaviors. Measures were assessed prior to and 90 days after the QPR program among a sample of 858 professionals. Community support personnel uniquely showed improvements on social norms while juvenile justice and child welfare workers engaged in more suicide prevention behaviors post training. While trainees across sectors had improved suicide prevention attitudes, law enforcement personnel were the exception. Organizational climate predicted change in suicide prevention attitudes, confidence, and social norms. Trainees who were older, Latinx, and Black had the most improvement on several training outcome variables, but these findings also varied within service sectors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Suicide is a major cause of preventable death worldwide. Adequate training in risk assessment and intervention is key to suicide prevention. The use of simulation (role plays, simulated patients, virtual reality…) for practical training is a promising tool in mental health. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of simulation training in suicide risk assessment and intervention for healthcare professionals and gatekeepers. METHODS We conducted a systematic review in Medline and PsycINFO up to 31 July 2021 of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized controlled trials, and pre/post-test studies. RCTs were furthermore included in a meta-analysis. We assessed the methodological quality of all studies with the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument, and the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2.0 for RCTs. Primary outcomes were changes in Kirkpatrick criteria: attitudes, skills, knowledge, behaviors, and patient outcomes. RESULTS We included 96 articles representing 43,656 participants. Most pre/post-test (n = 65) and non-randomized controlled (n = 14) studies showed significant improvement in attitudes, skills, knowledge, and behaviors. The meta-analysis of 11 RCTs showed positive changes in attitudes immediately after training and at 2-4 months post-training; in self-perceived skills at 6 months post-training; but not in factual knowledge. Studies assessing benefits for patients are still limited. CONCLUSIONS The heterogeneity of methodological designs, interventions, and trained populations combined with a limited number of RCTs and studies on patients' outcomes limit the strength of the evidence. However, preliminary findings suggest that simulation is promising for practical training in suicidal crisis intervention and should be further studied.

Abstract
Background Youth suicide has been a pressing public mental health concern in China, yet there is a lack of gatekeeper intervention programmes developed locally to prevent suicide among Chinese adolescents. Aims The current Delphi study was the first step in the systematic development of the Life Gatekeeper programme, the first gatekeeper programme to be developed locally in China that aims to equip teachers and parents with the knowledge, skills and ability to identify and intervene with students at high risk of suicide. Methods The Delphi method was used to elicit a consensus of experts who were invited to evaluate the importance of training content, the feasibility of the training delivery method, the possibility of achieving the training goals and, finally, the appropriateness of the training materials. Two Delphi rounds were conducted among local experts with diversified professional backgrounds in suicide research and practice. Statements were accepted for inclusion in the adjusted training programme if they were endorsed by at least 80% of the panel. Results Consensus was achieved on 201 out of 207 statements for inclusion into the adapted guidelines for the gatekeeper programme, with 151 from the original questionnaire and 50 generated from comments of the panel members. These endorsed statements were synthesised to develop the content of the Life Gatekeeper training programme. Conclusions This Delphi study provided an evidence base for developing the first gatekeeper training programme systematically and locally in China. We hope that the current study can pave the way for more evidence-based suicide prevention programmes in China. Further study is warranted to evaluate the effectiveness of the Life Gatekeeper training programme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the pharmacist role extending internationally to include health promotion and harm reduction, pharmacists are well-suited to adopt a frontline role within suicide prevention efforts. To maximise their abilities to implement suicide prevention strategies, suicide prevention training is essential to improve pharmacists' knowledge of, attitudes towards, and confidence in pharmacy-based suicide prevention. AIM This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an online Advanced Suicide Prevention Training for Pharmacists and explore how participant feedback may direct training improvements. METHOD One hundred and fifty pharmacists in Tasmania, Australia, completed the training. Of these, 109 participants completed surveys pre-, post- and 6-months post-training to evaluate changes in suicide prevention knowledge, confidence, and attitudes, and explore participants' perceptions of the training. RESULTS Significant improvements were observed in suicide prevention attitudes (F(2, 20) = 4.12, p = 0.032, partial η2 = 0.292), and self-efficacy (F(2, 20) = 7.84, p = 0.003, partial η2 = 0.439), across the three timepoints, with improvements to knowledge and confidence evident between pre- and post-training (p < 0.05). Qualitative data reflected that the training was beneficial in aiding the identification and support of at-risk individuals, however barriers such as the pharmacy setting, personal discomfort, and perceptions of the pharmacist role were identified as impeding the implementation of suicide prevention within pharmacy practice. CONCLUSION Training is an effective means of improving pharmacists' suicide prevention knowledge, confidence, and attitudes. While personal barriers to suicide prevention improved, contextual and social barriers continue to impede pharmacists' implementation of suicide prevention in practice.

Abstract
Background The development and implementation of gatekeeper trainings were first goals in the national suicide prevention strategy "Suicide Prevention Austria" (SUPRA). The current study aims to assess the short- and longer-term effects of the SUPRA gatekeeper trainings in comparison with established gatekeeper trainings. Methods We evaluated 28 gatekeeper trainings including 427 participants by assessing improvement of knowledge (facts about suicide and suicide prevention), gatekeeper self-efficacy and attitudes, and gatekeeper behavior (e.g., asking depressed people about suicide). Assessments were immediately before and after the gatekeeper trainings, with an additional follow-up 6 months later. Effects were compared with benchmark effects of established gatekeeper trainings. Results There were substantial improvements in knowledge, self-efficacy and attitudes immediately after the training, comparable or larger than known from evaluations of established gatekeeper trainings. Most of these changes were upheld in the follow-up assessment, with effects comparable to other gatekeeper trainings. There was only a small increase of self-reported gatekeeper behavior, in line with results from other gatekeeper trainings. Conclusion The SUPRA gatekeeper training had some beneficial effects in the short- and longterm, with effect sizes comparable to established gatekeeper trainings.

Abstract
Suicide among students enrolled in post-secondary education, including university or college, is a major public health concern. Previous research has examined the effectiveness of suicide prevention programs for this population. However, the effective elements of these interventions remain unknown. This study reviewed the literature on suicide prevention programs for post-secondary students, exploring and identifying those elements likely contributing to their effectiveness. A scoping review process was undertaken exploring suicide prevention programs for post-secondary students. Methodological quality of the articles was assessed, and content analysis was used to explore the programs and their effective elements. Twenty seven articles were included in this review, covering a variety of approaches. Gatekeeper training programs were the most common type of suicide prevention program. Programs for post-secondary students may be effective in improving student rates of engagement with mental health services and were associated with greater knowledge, and help-seeking attitudes and behaviors, and gatekeeper-related outcomes. While evidence was found supporting the effectiveness of some interventions such as gatekeeper programs to influence suicide-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviour, further and more rigorous research surrounding suicide prevention programs for post-secondary students is required, with a particular emphasis on student outcomes.

Abstract
This study examines relations between suicide prevention gatekeeper beliefs and actual helping behaviors following participation in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). Participants (n = 434) completed measures examining suicide-related beliefs and behaviors using a naturalistic pre-post design. All beliefs demonstrated significant change from pre- to posttest. Regression analyses indicate that beliefs about perceived barriers to action and the controllability of suicide predicted identification of high-risk youth; perceived barriers to action were also negatively related to helping responses and referrals 6-9 months post training. Self-efficacy was not related to suicide prevention behaviors at follow-up. The importance of anchoring training curriculums and measurement to health behavior change theories is discussed.

Abstract
Objective: The revised Willingness to Intervene against Suicide questionnaire and the Expanded Revised Facts on Suicide Quiz were employed to examine the relationship between college students' knowledge about suicide and intention to intervene. Participants: College students (n = 515) participated, a majority being women and Caucasian. Methods: Participants completed an online survey. Data were analyzed in SPSS. Results: College students have poor knowledge of suicide facts; however, this low level of accurate knowledge was not associated with intention to intervene with a suicidal person. Attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, sex, and no previous suicide attempt were all significant predictors of intention to intervene. Conclusions: These results challenge the notion that one must be well-informed in order to intend to take action.

Abstract
Background
Postsecondary student suicide is one of Japan’s most severe public health problems. Gatekeeper training (GKT) programs are a generally recommended suicide prevention intervention in Japan. For suicide countermeasures, an online program tailored to students may enhance self-efficacy as a gatekeeper.
Objective
This study aims to describe a research protocol to investigate the effect of a newly developed internet-delivered online peer GKT program to improve postsecondary student self-efficacy as gatekeepers for suicide countermeasures in Japan.
Methods
This study is a 2-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 (intervention: waiting list) allocation. Participants (n=320) will be recruited, and those who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to the intervention or waiting list control group. An approximately 85-minute, 6-section, internet-based gatekeeper program for postsecondary students has been developed that includes videos to help participants acquire skills as gatekeepers. The intervention group will complete the program within 10 days. The primary outcome, self-efficacy as a gatekeeper, is measured using the Gatekeeper Self-Efficacy Scale at baseline, immediately after taking the program, and 2 months after the survey after completing the program follow-up. To compare the primary outcomes, a t test, where the significance level is 5% (2-sided), will be used to test the intervention effect on an intention-to-treat basis.
Results
The study was at the stage of data collection at the time of submission. We recruited participants for this study during August and September 2021, and data collection will continue until December 2021. The data analysis related to the primary outcome will start in December 2021, and we hope to publish the results in 2022 or 2023.
Conclusions
This is the first study to investigate the effectiveness of an online GKT program for postsecondary students to improve self-efficacy as a gatekeeper using a randomized controlled trial design. The study will explore the potential of an online peer gatekeeper program for postsecondary students that can be disseminated online to a large number of students with minimal cost.

Abstract
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are highly prevalent among adolescents, and peers are often the first, and sometimes only, people to know about youth suicidality. Since many adolescents do not directly disclose suicidal thoughts, school-based suicide prevention programs aim to train youth to recognize warning signs of suicide in their peers that serve as "cues" to refer at-risk peers to an appropriate adult. However, peer-presented cues vary widely in presentation, and adolescents are more likely to recognize overt (i.e., obvious or explicit) as opposed to covert (i.e., hidden or implied) cues. The type of cue exhibited may, in turn, affect whether adolescents make a referral to an adult. The current study examined whether training suicide prevention influences referral intentions for overt and covert suicide cues. Participants included 244 high school students (54% female; M age = 16.21) in the Southeastern United States who received suicide prevention training (SOS; Signs of Suicide) as part of their health curriculum. Prior to training, students endorsed higher referral intentions for peers exhibiting overt compared to covert cues. Training was associated with increased intentions to refer peers across cue type, but referral intentions for covert cues improved significantly from pre to post-training while those for overt cues remained high and stable. Findings suggest that suicide prevention training might differentially improve students' ability to detect and respond appropriately to less obvious indicators of suicide risk. These findings may inform the adaptation and development of future, more nuanced school-based suicide prevention programming.

Abstract
Despite decades of strategic intervention, Queensland's suicide rates exceed both national and global rates. This is surely an indicator that not enough is being done to address this cause of death. The authors suggest that this problem may be addressed, in part, by provision of improved suicide awareness training for nurses. The purpose of this review was to support this through examination of the contemporary status of suicide awareness training in Queensland nurses, the efficacy of suicide awareness training in general, and the experiences of nurses, other health professionals, and suicidal patients in healthcare settings. We concluded that while efficacious, suicide awareness training in Queensland nurses is presently inadequate, and that both nurses and patients may benefit from improved suicide awareness training.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mental health problems are common among tertiary education students, with concerning levels of suicide ideation frequently observed in this population. There is a need for evidence-based mental health education and suicide prevention programs designed to meet the specific needs of these students. The "Talk-to-Me" Mass Open Online Course (MOOC) is a strengths-based mental health education program underpinned by a six-phase model for managing a suicidal crisis. METHODS To evaluate the efficacy of the "Talk-to-Me" MOOC in improving student knowledge of appropriate responses to suicide crisis via a randomised control trial (RCT) comparing tertiary education health science and education students attending the program to a waitlist control group. Overall, 170 will be screened and randomly allocated to either the "Talk-to-Me" MOOC or a waitlist control group, with data collection occurring at three-time points (baseline, 10-weeks and 24-weeks from baseline) over one year. The primary outcome will be participants' knowledge and responses to suicidal statements as measured by the Suicide Intervention Response Inventory. Secondary outcomes will be knowledge of mental health and coping skills as well as the overall utility of the program. CONCLUSIONS This pragmatic RCT will demonstrate the efficacy of the "Talk-to-Me" MOOC in improving the students' ability to respond to suicidal and mental health concerns compared to the waitlist group. This design will enable rigorous evaluation of the "Talk-to-Me" MOOC, contributing to a greater understanding of the online-delivered safe-paced suicide prevention programs for tertiary students. Abstract
Gatekeeper trainings are an approach intended to increase help seeking for suicide prevention. However, little is known of gatekeeper training's function in increasing gatekeeper intent to intervene with those in distress. The current study utilized the theory of planned behavior as a guide to predict gatekeeper's intention to intervene over a six-month period in a pilot randomized controlled trial of the Alliance Project gatekeeper training. Results suggested that the Alliance Project, predicted the growth curve of trainees' intention to intervene better than a control training from pretest through six months. Attitudes toward completing gatekeeper behaviors and perceived behavioral control over gatekeeper behaviors approached significance in a less parsimonious model. These findings suggest the Alliance Project produces changes in gatekeeper's intent to intervene through three months' time.

Abstract
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a gatekeeper training designed to assist professionals in their identification and response to youth mental illness. Despite widespread implementation, few studies have examined how individual-level trainee characteristics may impact the effectiveness of this training. In this study, we examined how pre-existing knowledge and attitudes about youth mental illness (measured prior to participation in the program) influenced training outcomes. We used a sample of 987 child-serving professionals who completed the YMHFA training program to identify demographic and work-related factors that predicted pre-existing attitudes and knowledge. The sample was then divided into two groups based on pre-existing attitudes and knowledge. We examined training effectiveness across four constructs: knowledge, confidence, intentions to intervene, and stigma. Findings indicate that gender and work-related characteristics were associated with pre-existing knowledge and attitudes about youth mental illness. The magnitude of training effectiveness varied across pre-existing attitudes and knowledge. Those participants with above average attitudes and knowledge benefited little from the program, suggesting that universal implementation of YMHFA may not be an efficient use of resources. Suggestions for a tiered implementation plan that prioritizes professionals most in need of the training are discussed.

Abstract
Exposure to self-directed violence (SDV) is a public health issue. Prevention trains third parties to identify SDV risk and provide help. However, we know little about the range of help provided to those who engage in SDV. The current study used a cross-sectional online survey of 1031 adolescents and emerging adults to learn about their SDV exposure, intent and attempts to help, and barriers to helping. Most participants reported SDV exposure, commonly by a peer, and provided help. Regression analyses showed that intent to help was predicted by social norms and having knowledge of resources, and such knowledge (but not social norms) was also related to actual helping behaviors. Qualitative analysis of short open-ended questions on the survey documented a range of barriers to helping. Findings support but also encourage revision of theoretical models of helping upon which prevention programs are based.

Abstract
AIMS Gatekeeper training (GKT) is an important suicide prevention strategy. Studies have evaluated the effectiveness of GKT in different populations, often neglecting family and friends who play a vital role in caring for people with suicide risk. This review evaluated GKT programs targeting family and friends to determine their effectiveness in this specific population. METHODS Academic databases were searched for studies on GKT programs. Programs involving family and friends caring for people with suicide risk were assessed for any impact on knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, and suicide prevention skills. RESULTS Seventeen studies were reviewed. GKT showed significant gains on outcomes of interest. Three studies targeted family and friends, with one involving them in program creation and conduction and another adjusting the program after their input. CONCLUSIONS GKT programs have potentially positive effects on family and friends caring for people with suicide risk. Few programs address the specific needs of this group, and programs adapted specifically for them are scarce. Future program development recommendations are discussed.

Abstract
The present study investigates indirect effects of communication about suicide in interpersonal relationships and patient-provider relationships on suicidal intention via attitude, descriptive norm, injunctive norm, and self-efficacy in committing suicide among Korean adults, using longitudinal survey data. Moderation effects of perceived social support are also tested. As a result of path analysis (N = 984), communication about suicide with family, friends, and coworkers is significantly related to pro-suicide descriptive norm and pro-suicide injunctive norm. Positive attitude toward suicide, pro-suicide injunctive norm, and high self-efficacy in committing suicide are significantly related to suicidal intention. Interpersonal communication is positively related to pro-suicide injunctive norm, which in turn links to suicidal intention. Communication about suicide with healthcare professionals, however, did not show significant direct and indirect effects. Moderation effects of perceived social support are detected between interpersonal communication and pro-suicide attitude and pro-suicide injunctive norm, as well as between patient-provider communication and pro-suicide attitude.

Abstract
Abstract.Background: There are concerning rates of suicidality among asylum seekers and refugees in Australia, and tailored suicide prevention initiatives are needed. Aims: We aimed to evaluate the impact of a tailored suicide prevention education program for people working with asylum seekers and refugees. Method: Attendees of the education program completed self-report questionnaires at pretraining, posttraining, and 4–6 months follow-up. Results: Over 400 workers, volunteers, and students across Australia took part in the education program. A series of linear mixed-effects models revealed significant improvements in outcome measures from pretraining (n = 247) to posttraining (n = 231). Improvements were maintained at follow-up (n = 75). Limitations: Limitations of this research were the lack of a control group and a low follow-up response rate. Conclusion: Findings suggest that a 2 days tailored suicide prevention education program contributes to significant improvements in workers’ attitudes toward suicide prevention, and their confidence and competence in assessing and responding to suicidal distress.

Abstract
The current study examined how the theory of planned behavior (TPB) constructs predict college students' intent to ask about suicide and refer a potentially suicidal peer to support. Using an experimental design, 420 college students (Mage = 19.61, SD = 1.50 yrs) were randomly assigned to read one of four vignettes depicting a peer in distress that varied suicide risk severity (low vs. high) and perceived causes of the distress (internal vs. external). Participants read their vignette and answered questions measuring TPB constructs and items assessing intent to ask about suicide and intent to refer the peer to services. Results indicated that subjective norms were associated with intent to ask about suicide and attitudes impact intent to refer. Only the interaction between risk severity and perceived behavioral control in predicting intent to refer and intent to ask were significant. Peers who perceive risk to be high are more likely to refer peers regardless of perceived behavioral control and are increasingly more likely to ask about suicide as perceived behavioral control increases. When risk severity is low and perceived behavioral control is low, peers are less likely to refer or ask about suicide. The theory of planned behavior has relevance to understanding peer intent to intervene with an at-risk peer and may be beneficial to guiding the development of effective suicide prevention programs.

Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review was to locate and synthesize peer-reviewed evidence regarding the effectiveness of providing suicide prevention education to nursing students. Systematic searches were conducted in seven databases (EMBASE, EmCare, Joanna Briggs, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science). Results were screened in duplicate at two stages: title and abstract, and full text. Critical appraisal and data extraction were also completed in duplicate. Initial database searching yielded 303 results. Following the addition of seven records from relevant reference lists, and the removal of duplicates, a total of 118 results were included for screening. Eight articles were deemed eligible for inclusion in this review; most (n = 5) were quantitative. While all were conducted within university settings, half were stand-alone education sessions, while the remaining were integrated with existing programmes/courses. The types of education programmes varied considerably across studies, with only three being established, evidence-based programmes. The studies explore a range of outcomes, which have been narratively categorized as enhanced skills, abilities, and self-confidence; development of positive attitudes and beliefs; acquisition of knowledge; and programme experience and evaluation. While there is a small body of evidence indicating that suicide prevention education programmes contribute to improvements in skills, abilities, self-confidence, and attitudes among nursing students, the variability in educational interventions and outcomes, coupled with short-term evaluation time frames, makes it difficult to fully understand the impact of this important suicide prevention strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of Kognito At Risk for College Students, an online, interactive suicide prevention gatekeeper training. METHODS In Study 1, a randomized controlled trial was conducted to test the efficacy of Kognito. Retention of participants at follow-up was strong. In Study 2, administrative records were used to follow the help-seeking behavior of Kognito trainees for one academic year, contrasted with untrained students. RESULTS In Study 1, between-group changes in gatekeeper attitudes were large at time-two, but attenuated modestly by 2-month follow-up. Kognito trainees referred more peers at 2-month follow-up (Cohen's d = .56, p < .05) - training 4 students in Kognito produces 1 more peer referred. In Study 2, the help-seeking rate of Kognito trainees (14.4%) was two-times the rate (6.8%) of untrained students (p < .001). Training 14 students in Kognito leads to 1 more self-referral to the Counseling Center. CONCLUSIONS This first randomized controlled trial of the college student version of Kognito validates the findings of less rigorous studies. Few brief suicide prevention trainings have shown changes in trainee behaviors such as referrals of at-risk peers and trainees actual help-seeking behavior. These results are promising that Kognito may outperform other similar suicide prevention trainings.

Abstract
Introduction: Patients are at increased risk for death by suicide following a psychiatric hospitalization. There has been limited study of the association between patient engagement in follow-up care after psychiatric hospitalization and suicide risk. Understanding why psychiatric inpatients choose to engage in post-discharge care is important in developing effective suicide prevention strategies. Materials and Methods: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) has been widely used to understand many health behaviors including healthcare utilization. Using the TPB, we developed an interview guide that assessed psychiatric inpatients’ attitudes and beliefs about the role of post-discharge care in addressing suicide risk. We also inquired about perception of future risk for suicide after discharge. We conducted semi-structured interviews prior to discharge and administered the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). We assessed healthcare utilization at 1 and 3 mo after discharge. We coded and grouped the transcribed data according to the three domains of the TPB model: attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Results: Sixteen individuals consented to enrollment. More than half (N = 10) believed that they were at no or low future suicide risk after discharge. Participants who felt that their future risk for suicide was low or none were significantly older (mean 59.3 yr, SD: 8.3) and reported significantly less severe suicidal ideation in the past month (mean CSSR-S 2.5, SD 2.1) compared to those participants who believed that their future risk was high (mean age 47.5, SD: 8.6; mean CSSR-S 4.7, SD 0.5, p < 0.05). However, all participants had a lifetime history of severe suicidal ideation (mean CSSR-S > 4.7). Many participants felt that peers facilitated treatment engagement. However, participants expressed a tendency to avoid treatment if they experienced unwanted side effects, encountered stigma, or experienced poor-therapeutic alliance. Five participants experienced poor continuity of care after discharge. Of these participants, four reported at the time of discharge no or low perceived future risk of suicide and three were readmitted within 90 d after discharge. Conclusions: Individuals may not appreciate that they are at heightened risk for suicide after hospitalization and this may negatively impact treatment engagement.

Abstract
Adolescent perceived behavioral control (self-efficacy) plays a key role in influencing decision-making processes within the context of suicide prevention programming. Guided by Theory of Planned Behavior, models tested attitudinal and social factors predicting adolescent intentions and actual engagement in suicide prevention behaviors. Participants included 233 racially and ethnically diverse high school students (54% female) in a southwestern U.S. school district. Measures included attitudes, norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and behavior over follow-up. Structural equation modeling indicated that perceived behavioral control, rather than intentions, was the direct predictor of behaviors. For adolescents, beliefs about effectively utilizing learned suicide prevention behavior may be more important than intentions. The design of suicide prevention efforts should account for this important influence on adolescent decision-making.

Abstract
Gatekeeper training is a common approach for aiding suicidal youth. This study utilizes comparative effectiveness "benchmarks" from established programs to evaluate the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) program. The QPR program was implemented with adults (N = 2,389) working in youth-serving community agencies. Questionnaires assessed suicide prevention knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behaviors. Consistent with benchmarked studies, participants in QPR demonstrated knowledge and suicide prevention behavior gains compared with control groups. Future research should utilize benchmarking methods as a measure of effectiveness, and more thoroughly assess mechanisms that promote behavior change.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine and validate the effect of knowledge management systems (KMS) on innovation.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data from 392 employees working in private and public organizations in the state of Kuwait were collected and used to test the proposed research model and hypotheses through structural equation modeling.
Findings
This study finds that system quality, information quality and service quality of KMS have a positive effect on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the system, and in turn, they have a positive effect on actual use of KMS which leads to net benefit represented in an increased innovation for employees who use the KMS. Employees (users of the system) indicated that the use of the system helped them to improve their work, come up with new ways to conduct work, discover new solutions to solve problems, accomplish more complex tasks in less time and communicate in a better way with other employees.
Practical implications
The findings of this study analyzed the elements of KMS that influence innovation in public and private organizations at the individual level. This should be helpful for the designers of KMS to focus on those success factor elements when building KMS, which should make it easy for individuals to acquire knowledge, use it, share it and thus become more innovative and successful in the work they do and the decisions they make. The study also shows a positive relationship between usefulness, ease of use and attitude toward using KMS. Developers of KMS should also take these guidelines in consideration when designing a responsive KMS.
Originality/value
Both knowledge and innovation are considered as crucial sources for sustaining the competitive advantage for organizations. However, despite this, knowledge management (KM) and innovation have established themselves as separate fields and distinct areas of research. However, although KM has a strong relationship with innovation, it is unclear if the research literature in these two fields converge. There is a lack of research studies that deal with interrelation of KM and innovation in organizations. This study is among the first to attempt to fill this gap by empirically investigating the effect of KMS on innovation in both private and public organizations in the state of Kuwait.
