Abstract
Bone mineral density (BMD) is a crucial indicator of osteoporosis. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) introduces a new method for assessing body composition, specifically BMD measurement. Compared with existing ultrasound and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for BMD screening and diagnosis, BIA has the advantages of safety, convenience and speed. However, the accuracy of BIA for BMD measurement needs to be explored. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the novel BIA technique in conducting whole-body BMD assessments in the general population of Taiwan. Overall, 318 healthy adults in Taiwan (37.67 ± 19.44 years of age; 145 male and 173 female patients) were included. Whole-body BMD was measured via foot-to-foot BIA-StarBIA-201 (StarBIA Meditek Co. LTD, Taichung, Taiwan) and the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) Lunar Prodigy technology (GE Medical Systems, Madison, WI, USA). Linear regression analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, the Bland-Altman plot, and paired t tests were used. The whole-body BMDs measured by BIA and DXA were 1.139 ± 0.124 g/cm2 and 1.202 ± 0.168 g/cm2, respectively. The regression equation was y = 1.057x + 0.063. The Pearson correlation coefficient, mean difference, and limits of agreement were r = 0.737, - 0.053 g/cm2, and - 0.290-0.165 g/cm2, respectively. The regression equation was y = 1.057x + 0.063. Standing BIA was correlated with the DXA gold standard for estimating whole-body BMD in adults; however, its interchangeability remains limited. The potential bias in the measurement results of this study represents a current challenge with BIA compared with that of DXA, and there is still room for improvement. The convenient BIA method for measuring whole-body BMD may be useful in the application of primary screening and future development of BMD assessment methods. BIA is widely used to measure body composition, but its application to the measurement of BMD represents a novel technological breakthrough.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between osteoporosis and rotator cuff tears has been reported previously. However, the treatment rate of osteoporosis in individuals with rotator cuff tear is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and treatment rate of osteoporosis in individuals with rotator cuff tears. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 207 participants. Participants underwent comprehensive assessments, including shoulder ultrasonographic examinations and quantitative ultrasound measurements for bone status evaluation. Osteoporosis diagnosis was predicated on a calcaneus ultrasound bone densitometry, and the cutoff value was set as a T score of -1.455, with reference to a previous report. RESULTS One hundred fifty-six participants were classified as individuals without rotator cuff tears (group A), and 51 participants were classified as those with (group B). The mean age in group A was significantly lower than that in group B (63 ± 10 vs. 68 ± 9, respectively; P = .003). In terms of the T score examined by quantitative ultrasound, the mean T score in group A was significantly higher than that in group B (-1.4 ± 1.3 vs. -1.9 ± 1.6, respectively; P = .0412). The percentage of subjects with a T score of -1.455 or less in group B was 60.8% (31/51). The proportion of subjects with a T score of -1.455 or less undergoing osteoporosis treatment was 14.5% (12/83) in group A and 12.9% (4/27) in group B, showing no significant difference. CONCLUSIONS Participants with a rotator cuff tear had relatively high prevalence of osteoporosis. Among those with both a rotator cuff tear and osteoporosis, the proportion receiving osteoporosis treatment was l2.9%, a very low rate.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a significant concern affecting the elderly, necessitating a complex assessment. This study aims to deepen the understanding of factors associated with the assessment of malnutrition in the elderly by comparing single- and multi-parameter approaches. In this cross-sectional study, 154 individuals underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). Malnutrition risk was determined using the mini nutritional assessment (MNA). Additional factors assessed included sarcopenia, polypharmacy, depression, appetite, handgrip strength, and gait speed. Phase angle (PA) and body composition were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The MNA identified a malnutrition risk in 36.8% of individuals. The geriatric depression scale (GDS) and PA demonstrated moderate effectiveness in assessing malnutrition risk, with AUC values of 0.69 (95% CI: 0.60-0.78) and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.54-0.72), respectively. A logistic regression model incorporating handgrip strength, skeletal muscle mass, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, depression, specific antidepressant use, mobility, appetite, and smoking achieved superior performance in predicting malnutrition risk, with an AUC of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77-0.91). In conclusion, this study demonstrates that integrating multiple parameters into a composite model provides a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of malnutrition risk in elderly adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this cross-sectional evaluation was to determine the associations between raw bioelectrical impedance and cardiometabolic health parameters in a sample of young non-Hispanic White and African American adults. METHODS A total of 96 (female: 52, male: 44) non-Hispanic White ( n = 45) and African American adults ( n = 51) between the ages of 19 and 37 yr (22.7 ± 3.83 yr) completed several fasted assessments including resting systolic blood pressure (rSBP), blood glucose (FBG), blood lipids, and bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy. Bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy-derived measurements included phase angle, bioimpedance index (BI), impedance ratio (IR), reactance index (XCi), fat-free mass (FFM), FFM index (FFMi), and absolute (a) and relative (%) total body water (TBW) and extracellular (ECF) and intracellular fluid (ICF). All bioelectric variables were collected at 50 kHz other than IR (250 kHz/5 kHz). Multiple regressions were conducted and adjusted for sex, age, and body mass index. RESULTS rSBP was positively, and HDL was inversely, associated with all bioelectrical impedance and absolute hydration variables (all P ≤ 0.050) other than XCi for rSBP and XCi and FFMi for HDL. rSBP ( P < 0.001) was inversely, and HDL ( P = 0.034) was positively, associated with IR. FBG was positively associated with BI, XCi, FFM, TBWa, and ECFa (all P < 0.050). Metabolic syndrome severity was positively associated with BI, FFM, TBWa, and ECFa for women (all P ≤ 0.050) and with ICFa for African American women ( P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS Given the rapid increase in the prevalence of cardiometabolic health risks among young adults and the broad use of bioelectrical impedance in practice, the conflicting associations we observed in this age group suggest that bioelectrical impedance parameters should be used with caution in the context of cardiometabolic health risks and age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phase angle, which is associated with cellular health, has attracted attention as a noninvasive and objective method for nutritional assessment. However, the association between malnutrition and phase angle in older inpatients with hip fractures has not been reported. Therefore, this study investigated this association in older inpatients (aged ≥65 years) with hip fractures and determined the cutoff phase angle for determining malnutrition. METHODS This cross-sectional study retrospectively analyzed the data of 96 inpatients with hip fractures who were hospitalized in rehabilitation units after surgery (male, 29.4%; mean age, 82.4±6.2 years). Nutritional status was assessed using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), with malnutrition defined as a GNRI ≥98. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to measure phase angles. RESULTS The phase angle was associated with malnutrition (B=-1.173; odds ratio=0.310; 95% confidence interval 0.58-0.83; p=0.015). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.71. The cutoff phase angle for malnutrition was 3.96° (sensitivity=0.85, specificity=0.63). CONCLUSION Phase angle could be an indicator of malnutrition in older inpatients with hip fractures. Our findings will help formulate rehabilitation strategies for these patients.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to map evidence on the association between phase angle (PhA) and body composition in populations healthy and clinical populations). A systematic search for information regarding the topic was conducted in nine electronic databases (CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Science Direct, MEDLINE and Web of Science) between October and November 2021. Studies with different designs, which allowed extracting information about the relationship between PhA and body composition (body cell mass [BCM], muscle tissue, bone mineral content, lean mass, total fat mass, visceral fat, and lean soft tissue mass [LSTM]) were included. Of the total of 11,913 initially identified studies, 59 were included after reading titles, abstracts, full texts and references. Most studies (40.67%; n = 24) presented data from Brazilian samples. With regard to the design of studies, 15 (25.42%) had longitudinal design. The age group of studies was wide, with studies involved 3-year-old children and 88-year-old adults. Body fat mass was evaluated by 31 studies (52.54%) in which 11 observed inverse relationships, nine studies showed direct relationships and 11 observed no relationship. Regarding lean mass, muscle mass, and fat-free mass components, most studies observed direct relationship with PhA (n = 37; 86.04%). It could be concluded that the phase angle was directly associated with lean mass and muscle mass in different age groups (children, adolescents, adults and older adults) and in people with different health diagnoses (HIV, cancer, hemodialysis, sarcopenia and without the diagnosis of diseases). Regarding body fat and the other investigated components, there is not enough evidence to establish the direction of associations.

Abstract
Studies investigating the association between the phase angle (PA) and frailty are scarce. The PA is considered a practical, low-cost, noninvasive measure for the early identification of this clinical condition. To investigate the association between PA and frailty/pre-frailty, nutritional and clinical aspects in older people. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 51 older people (≥ 60 years). PA was determined using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Frailty profile was determined using the criteria of unintentional weight loss, self-reported fatigue, slow gait speed, low grip strength and insufficient physical activity. Nutritional status was evaluated based on the body mass index and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMMI). Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity were also investigated. Sociodemographic data were collected through interviews. Prevalence of frailty/pre-frailty was 84.3%, with no difference between the sexes. The first tercile of the sample had a PA lower than 6º, which was considered low. No significant difference in PA was found between older people with or without frailty/pre-frailty. In the multiple linear regression analysis, age and ASMMI were shown to be potential independent predictors for PA. Age showed an inverse correlation with PA, while ASMMI showed a direct correlation. No association was found between PA and frailty or pre-frailty.

Abstract
Raw bioelectrical impedance measurements are often used as a prognosticator of health status because of their association with disease states and malnutrition. Although studies consistently show the effect of physical characteristics on bioelectrical impedance, few investigations describe the effect of race, particularly for Black adults, and many bioelectrical impedance standards were produced from primarily White adults almost 2 decades ago. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the racial differences in bioelectrical impedance measurements using bioimpedance spectroscopy between non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Black adults matched for age, sex, and body mass index. We hypothesized that Black adults would have a lower phase angle from higher resistance and lower reactance compared with White adults. One hundred non-Hispanic White (n = 50) and non-Hispanic Black (n = 50) males (n = 34) and females (n = 66) matched for sex, age, and body mass index completed this cross-sectional study. Participants underwent several anthropometric assessments, including height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, bioimpedance spectroscopy, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Bioelectrical impedance measures of resistance, reactance, phase angle, and impedance were all collected at frequencies of 5, 50, and 250 kHz and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis was performed using 50-kHz data. There were no significant differences for any anthropometric variable between Black and White participants in the total sample or by sex groups. In addition, there were no significant racial differences for any bioelectrical impedance assessment, including bioelectrical impedance vector analysis. Differences in bioelectrical impedance are likely not a function of race between Black and White adults and concerns regarding its utility should not be based on this characteristic.

Abstract
Background: Low bone mass is common in malnourished patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can lead to a higher risk of fractures. Elderly and CKD patients have the same risk factors for protein-energy wasting, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis. Here, we investigated the association between phase angle (PhA) and bone mineral density (BMD) in dialysis-naïve patients with CKD stage 5 (CKD5) and identified a statistical relationship between PhA and age, which affects bone density. Methods: Bio-impedance spectroscopy for evaluating body composition and PhA and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for determining the BMD were simultaneously performed in 167 consecutive patients (mean age, 59.65 ± 13.98 years; women, 40.1%). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess the potential interaction effect of PhA and age on femoral neck BMD (FN-BMD). Results: Our results showed that PhA and age were independently associated with FN-BMD and T-score in multiple linear regressions analyses. A significant interaction effect of PhA and age on FN-BMD was found on two-way ANOVA (p = 0.028). The average BMD values for the first and second tertiles of the PhA were higher in the young versus elderly group, whereas patients in the elderly group had higher BMD in the third tertiles. Conclusions: A relationship was noted between PhA and BMD in patients with advanced-stage CKD. The effect of PhA level on FN-BMD differed between elderly and young patients. Our study suggested that higher PhA levels could be a marker explaining the maintenance of good bone health in elderly patients with CKD5. Further longitudinal analyses are needed to determine whether PhA predicts the risk of CKD-MBD-related fractures during CKD progression.

Abstract
Background: Non-specific pain or discomfort in the neck and shoulder girdle, called katakori in Japanese, is a common, chronic musculoskeletal condition worldwide. However, its various clinical features are incompletely characterized, even among medical professionals. We aimed to clarify factors affecting katakori and to investigate objectively the associated neck muscle stiffness and skeletal muscle volume. Methods: All staff members at our private hospital were surveyed about their lifestyle, physical and mental status, and katakori symptoms, using a self-administered questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to explore possible katakori risk factors. On secondary assessment, ultrasound elastography of the trapezius muscle as well as limb/trunk muscle mass were compared between subjects with severe symptoms and subjects without katakori, using propensity score matching. Results: Of 359 participants enrolled, nearly 75% had katakori to some degree. Spending time on a computer during work (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.82 for 3-6 hours, aOR: 2.48 for > 6 hours), being female (aOR: 3.75), and having unsatisfactory sleep (aOR: 2.92) were potential risk factors for katakori. Comparison of 13 matched pairs showed a significantly stiffer trapezius in subjects with severe katakori symptoms, but no apparent differences in limb/trunk muscle mass. Conclusions: Katakori was particularly prevalent in our hospital staff. Possible risk factors for disabling katakori were doing long-term computer work, being female, and having unsatisfactory sleep. Symptoms seem to be associated with elevated neck muscle stiffness. These findings could guide working condition improvements to mitigate katakori.

Abstract
Background Due to the high prevalence of malnutrition among hospitalized patients, screening and assessment of nutritional status should be routinely performed upon hospital admission. The main objective of this observational study was to evaluate the prevalence of and the risk for malnutrition, as identified by using three nutritional screening tests, and to observe whether some anthropometric and functional parameters used for nutritional evaluation were related to these test scores. Methods This single-center observational study included 207 patients admitted from the emergency department for hospitalization in either the internal medicine or surgery units of our institution from September 2017 to December 2018. The prevalence of malnutrition among this patient sample was evaluated by using the Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002), the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. Body mass index (BMI), bioimpedance analysis (BIA), handgrip strength (HGS) and calf circumference (CC) assessments were also performed. Results According to the NRS-2002, 93% of the patients were at no risk or at low nutritional risk (NRS score < 3), and 7% were at a high nutritional risk (NRS score ≥ 3). On the other hand, according to the SGA, 46.3% of the patients were well-nourished (SGA-a), 49.8% were moderately malnourished (SGA-b), and 3.9% were severely malnourished (SGA-c). Finally, according to the GLIM criteria, 18% patients were malnourished. Body weight, body mass index (BMI), phase angle (PhA), CC and HGS were significantly lower in the patients with NRS scores ≥ 3, SGA-c and in patients with stage 1 and stage 2 malnutrition, according to the GLIM criteria. Conclusion The NRS-2002, the SGA and the GLIM criteria appear to be valuable tools for the screening and assessment of nutritional status. In particular, the lowest NRS-2002, SGA and GLIM scores were associated with the lowest PhA and CC. Nevertheless, a weekly re-evaluation of patients with better screening and assessment scores is recommended to facilitate early detection of changes in nutritional status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To clarify whether the prevalence of locomotive syndrome (LS) and osteoporosis differed according to region, gender, and physical functions in Japan. METHODS Data were collected in Kashiwara City (urban region) and Yakumo Town (rural region). Totally, 208 participants from the urban region and 782 participants from the rural region were included in this study. LS was assessed using the 25-item Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale and osteoporosis was assessed using a quantitative ultrasound. Physical functions were measured using grip strength and the 3-m timed up-and-go test. Differences between urban and rural regions were investigated using standardized incidence ratio and multivariate analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of LS and osteoporosis was 24.5% and 42.8% in the urban region and 10.9% and 28.8% in the rural region, respectively. The standardized incidence ratio of the urban region versus the rural region was 1.80 (95% confidence intervals [CI] = 1.35-2.39) for LS and 1.21 (95% CI = 1.32-2.43) for osteoporosis, showing that the prevalence of LS was significantly higher in the urban region. Multivariate analysis indicated that LS was significantly associated with the urban sample and timed up-and-go was significantly longer in the urban sample. CONCLUSION Regional differences may be considered when evaluating LS in health checkups. Understanding the results of this study may help reduce LS prevalence.

Abstract
[Purpose] We aimed to clarify the characteristics of age-related changes based on the
body composition data of old and super-old nursing home residents. [Participants and
Methods] This cross-sectional study included 53 female nursing home residents aged
75 years and above (mean age: 89.4 years; standard deviation: 5.6 years). They were
divided into the old and super-old groups. The old group consisted of 24 participants aged
between 75 and 89 years (mean age: 84.4 years; standard deviation: 3.7 years). The
super-old group consisted of 29 participants aged 90 years and above (mean age:
93.5 years; standard deviation: 2.7 years). The parameters such as phase angle, skeletal
muscle mass index, skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, body mass index, and Barthel
index were examined in the two groups. The relationship between age and phase angle was
determined, and the partial correlation coefficient was analyzed using the items for which
a significant difference was found between the two groups as adjustment variables.
[Results] The overall phase angle was 3.2 degrees, and that of the super-old group alone
was 2.6 degrees. Age-related difference was observed in the phase angle and Barthel index.
A significant correlation of −0.53 was observed between age and phase angle. The Barthel
index-adjusted partial correlation coefficient between age and phase angle was −0.35.
[Conclusion] The results of this study indicated that phase angle is an indicator of
physical condition associated with aging in female nursing home residents aged 75 to
100 years.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and height-adjusted resistance (R/H), reactance (Xc/H) and phase angle (PhA). A total of 61 male and 64 female subjects aged over 60 years were recruited from middle Taiwan. The R and Xc were measured using Bodystat Quadscan 4000 at a frequency of 50 kHz. BMD at the whole body, L2-L4 spine, and dual femur neck (DFN), denoted as BMDTotal, BMDL2-L4, and BMDDFN, were calculated using a Hologic DXA scanner. The R-Xc graph was used to assess vector shift among different levels of BMD. BMD was positively correlated with Xc/H and negatively correlated with R/H (p < 0.001). The General Linear Model (GLM) regression results were as follows: BMDTotal = 1.473-0.002 R/H + 0.007 Xc/H, r = 0.684; BMDL2-L4 = 1.526-0.002 R/H + 0.012 Xc/H, r = 0.655; BMDDFN = 1.304-0.002 R/H + Xc/H, r = 0.680; p < 0.0001. Distribution of vector in the R-Xc graph was significantly different for different levels of BMDTotal, BMDL2-L4 and BMDDFN. R/H and Xc/H were correlated with BMD in the elderly. The linear combination of R/H and Xc/H can effectively predict the BMD of the whole body, spine and proximal femur, indicating that BIVA may be used in clinical and home-use monitoring tool for screening BMD in the elderly in the future.

Abstract
Objective.To investigate how phase angle (PhA) is associated with total and regional bone mineral density (BMD) (femur and lumbar spine) in university athletes.Approach.This cross-sectional study was conducted in Florianópolis, Brazil, with 167 university athletes from different sports (92 males). The PhA was obtained through electrical bioimpedance and BMD was obtained through dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Data on the covariables age, time involved in the sport, type of sport (low, medium and high impact), daily use of oral contraceptives, and vitamin D calcium and/or protein supplementation were obtained through anamnesis, while fat mass and fat- and bone-free mass were obtained through DXA. Simple linear regression and a 5% significance level were used.Main results. In female athletes, PhA was directly associated with total BMD (β: 2.20; 95% CI: 0.43; 3.96) and BMD in the femur (β0.85; 95% CI: -0.23; 1.94) and lumbar spine (β: 1.45; 95% CI: 0.44; 2.46), even after adjusting for the covariates. In male athletes, although PhA was directly associated with regional BMD (femur [β: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.04; 1.22] and lumbar spine [β: 0.64; 95% CI: -0.01; 1.31]) in simple linear regression, this association disappeared when the covariates were added.Significance. PhA was directly associated with total BMD and lumbar spine in female, but not male, athletes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The phase angle (PhA) is a measure of great clinical relevance provided through the Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA). PhA is related to health status. Physical performance measures are also similarly associated to the health status of older individuals, however, studies which asses the relationship between these two measures are scarce. OBJECTIVE To identify the relationship between PhA and physical performance measures in community-dwelling older adults in a Brazilian sample. METHODOLOGY This was a cross-sectional study in which 200 community-dwelling older adults up to 65 years of age of both genders were recruited. Physical performance was evaluated by walking speed and handgrip strength, and the PhA was derived from BIA. Linear regression models were used to estimate the associations between PhA and physical performance measures. Two models were built: the first model was adjusted by handgrip and walking speed; and the second model additionally included the number of chronic diseases, gender, age and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS A total of 200 subjects were evaluated through BIA. Men showed a mean age of 72.13 ± 3.42 years and women 71.94 ± 3.35 years. Mean PhA among men was 5.99 ± 0.67, while the mean obtained for women was 5.43 ± 0.70. Linear regression showed that handgrip strength (β: 0.036; p-value < 0.001; β: 0.024; p-value: 0.005) and walking speed (β: 0.495; p-value: 0.044; β: 0.619, p-value: 0.009) were correlated with the PhA in both models. CONCLUSION The results of our study revealed that PhA is a good marker of physical performance for the Brazilian community-dwelling older adults studied.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the risk factors for new neuropathic pain (NeP) after five years in healthy middle-aged and elderly volunteers. DESIGN Prospective longitudinal cohort study (Yakumo study). SETTING Clinical evaluation in a health checkup. SUBJECTS A total of 366 people (male N = 146, female N = 220, average age = 63.5 years) who did not have NeP in 2013 were examined. METHODS NeP was diagnosed based on a painDETECT questionnaire score ≥13. Body mass index (BMI), comorbidity, low back pain (LBP), sciatica, physical ability, grip and back muscle strength, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, frailty, spinal alignment, and quality of life (QOL) with the SF36 in 2013 were compared between NeP(+) and NeP(-) subjects in 2018 using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The NeP(+) rate in 2018 was 5.2%, with no significant differences in age and gender. NeP(+) subjects had significantly lower BMI, severe sciatica, poor gait ability, higher rates of osteoporosis and sarcopenia, greater lumbar kyphosis and spinal inclination, and poorer mental health in 2013. Poor gait ability (odds ratio [OR] = 8.05), low BMI (OR = 2.31), lumbar kyphosis (OR = 1.38), low percentage of the young adult mean (OR = 1.15), and low mental QOL (OR = 1.06) were identified as significant and independent risk factors for new NeP after five years. CONCLUSIONS This longitudinal cohort study identified five independent risk factors for development of new NeP after five years, with related factors of spinal inclination, sarcopenia, and sciatica. New NeP may be prevented by intervention or treatment of these factors at an early stage in relatively healthy middle-aged and elderly people.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Low phase angle, a non-invasive bioimpedance marker, is associated with elevated odds of dysmobility syndrome and its components. Phase angle (estimated cutoffs: < 4.8° in men; < 4.5° in women) can be used to detect dysmobility syndrome in community-dwelling older adults as a simple, integrative screening tool. INTRODUCTION Dysmobility syndrome uses a score-based approach to predict fracture risk that incorporates the concepts of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity. Low phase angle (PhA), a simple, non-invasive bioelectrical impedance marker, was associated with low lean mass, high fat mass, and poor muscle function. We aimed to investigate the association between PhA and dysmobility syndrome, with the exploration of the diagnostic cutoffs. METHODS In a community-dwelling Korean older adult cohort, dysmobility syndrome was defined as the presence of ≥ 3 of the following components: osteoporosis, low lean mass, falls in the preceding year, low grip strength, high fat mass, and poor timed up and go performance. RESULTS Among the 1825 participants (mean age 71.6, women 66.7%), subjects were classified into sex-stratified PhA tertiles. The prevalence of dysmobility syndrome increased from the highest PhA tertile group to the lowest (15.50 to 2.45% in men; 33.41 to 12.25% in women, P for trend < 0.001). The mean PhA values decreased as the dysmobility score increased (5.33° to 4.65° in men; 4.76° to 4.39° in women, P for trend < 0.001). Low PhA (cutoff: < 4.8° in men; < 4.5° in women) was associated with twofold elevated odds of dysmobility syndrome after adjusting for age, sex, and conventional risk factors. Low PhA improved the identification of individuals with dysmobility syndrome when added to the conventional risk model (area under the curve, 0.73 to 0.75, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Low PhA was associated with dysmobility syndrome and its components, independent of age, sex, body mass index, nutritional status, and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (CAH21OHD) have increased fat mass and metabolic alterations. The bioelectrical impedance phase angle (PhA) is an indicator of cellular integrity in several diseases. This study aimed to determine the influence of adiposity levels, sex, CAH21OHD, pubertal development, body composition, and treatment on the PhA of patients with CAH21OHD. METHODS Forty girls and 30 boys with CAH21OHD aged 15.3 ± 5.8 years were evaluated. Sexual maturation was assessed by a pediatrician. The PhA was assessed using bioelectrical impedance, percentage of fat mass (% FM), and lean soft tissue (LST) with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Adiposity levels were compared using % FM tertiles and body mass index (BMI). Glucocorticoid dosage was converted using hydrocortisone dose equivalent (HDE). RESULTS No differences were found in the PhA values among the clinical form (p = 0.103), BMI (p = 0.498), and % FM (p = 0.654) groups. High PhA values were observed in boys (p = 0.011) and postpubertal (p < 0.001) patients. LST, HDE, and height in girls (r2 = 0.68, p < 0.001) and age, HDE, and FM in boys (r2 = 0.82, p < 0.001) determined the PhA variations. BMI explained 14% (p = 0.032) of the PhA variations, whereas LST, height, HDE, and FM (kg) explained 66% (p < 0.001) in the prepubertal, pubertal, and postpubertal groups, respectively. CONCLUSION LST determined the PhA variations in girls and the postpubertal group. Age and BMI were determinants in boys and the pre- and pubertal groups, respectively.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to analyse the association between specific bioelectric impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess segmental body composition using DXA as the reference technique. METHODS The sample comprised 50 young active students who practised or played different sports (25 men, age: 24.37 ± 4.79 y; 25 women, age: 24.32 ± 4.43 y) from the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC). Anthropometric data (height, weight, arm, waist, and calf circumferences) and bioelectrical measurements (R, ohm; Xc, ohm) were recorded. Body composition was analysed with specific BIVA. DXA was used as the reference method to assess body composition of the whole-body, the trunk, and the limbs. The percentage of fat mass (%FMDXA) and fat-free mass index (FFMIDXA = FFM/length2) were calculated. The agreement between specific BIVA and DXA was evaluated by a depth-depth analysis, two-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlations. RESULTS The depth-depth analysis showed a good agreement between DXA and BIVA (F = 14.89, p < 0.001) in both sexes and all body segments. Specific vector length (Zsp; i.e. indicative of %FM) was correlated with %FMDXA in the whole body and all body segments, and the phase angle was correlated with FFMIDXA, with he trunk in women as the only exception. Specific BIVA demonstrated to balance the effect of body size on bioelectrical measurements in both whole and segmental approaches. CONCLUSIONS Segmental specific BIVA and DXA provided a consistent evaluation of body composition in both sexes, of the whole body and each body segment. The indices %FM and FFMI obtained with DXA were correlated to vector length and phase angle in each segment, respectively. Specific BIVA represents a promising technique for monitoring segmental body composition changes in sport science and clinical applications.

Abstract
The Japanese version of the EuroQol 5 dimension, 5 level version (EQ-5D-5L) can now be used to quantitatively evaluate the health-related quality of life (QoL) in Japan. Locomotive syndrome (LS) is a concept advocated in Japan to describe a condition requiring care for musculoskeletal disorders. However, no detailed study on the relationship between this index and LS in Japanese health checkup has been reported. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between the Japanese version of the EQ-5D-5L and LS. We enrolled 477 participants who were undergoing health checkups in Japan. All participants were administered the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Functional Scale for the diagnosis of LS and the Japanese version of the EQ-5D-5L. We performed statistical analysis to compare the non-LS and LS patients; moreover, the risk factors and cut-off values were calculated and verified. The Japanese version of the EQ-5D-5L index was significantly lower in patients with LS than in non-LS patients and was significantly related to LS in logistic regression analysis. In subgroup analysis targeting the five dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L, it was seen that mobility, pain/discomfort, and self-care were significantly involved in LS. The cut-off value of the EQ-5D-5L index for LS was 0.875. The Japanese version of the EQ-5D-5L index was significantly related to LS in Japan. This index will be a useful tool that can easily measure health-related quality of life in middle-aged and elderly Japanese people. Future studies should investigate the relationship of not only LS but also various diseases with the Japanese version of the EuroQol 5 dimension, 5 level version.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by deterioration of bone tissue and mass, with an increasing global prevalence. Therefore, the discovery of biomarkers for osteoporosis would help to guide appropriate treatment. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have become increasingly recognized as biomarkers for detecting diseases. However, few studies have investigated the association of circulating miRNA with osteoporosis in the general population. The aim of this study was to identify miRNA associated with osteoporosis in a general resident health check-up for potential use as an osteoporosis biomarker. We conducted a cross-sectional study as part of a health check-up program and recruited 352 volunteers (139 men, 213 women, mean age 64.1 ± 9.6 years). Osteoporosis was diagnosed according to the WHO classification. Twenty-two candidate microRNAs were screened through real-time quantitative PCR, and miRNAs associated with osteoporosis were analyzed using logistic regression analysis including other risk factors. In total, 95 females and 30 males were diagnosed with osteoporosis with bone mineral density tests (BMD: T‐score < −2.5). We found that miR195 was significantly lower in females, while miR150 and miR222 were significantly higher in males. The results of the logistic regression analysis indicated that in females, higher age and lower miR195 (odds ratio: 0.45, 95% confidential interval: 0.03–0.98) were significant risk factors for lower BMD, while the presence of a smoking habit and lower miR150 (odds ratio: 1.35, 95% confidential interval: 1.02–1.79) were significant risk factors for osteoporosis. Serum levels of miR195 and miR150 are independently associated with low bone mineral density in females and males, respectively.

Abstract
AIM In Japan, nursing care is advised for patients with locomotive syndrome (LS) because of musculoskeletal disorders. Balance tests have indicated an association between LS risk and sway size related to center of pressure (COP) movement. Here, the power spectrum represents the energy contained in each frequency of COP sway. Although balance tests are often performed during health checkups, no studies have investigated the relationship between the power spectrum and LS. This study investigated this relationship. METHODS In total, 605 recipients of health checkups were evaluated for LS using the 25-item Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale. Power spectrums were calculated by applying fast Fourier transform to COP sway time-series data. These were classified into three sections (0.02-0.2 Hz [low-frequency band; LFB], 0.2-2 Hz [mid-frequency band], and 2-10 Hz [high-frequency band; HFB]). Power spectrums were evaluated in left-right and front-back directions. RESULTS LS was associated with significantly lower ratios for both the HFB (P = 0.001) in the left-right direction and LFB (P = 0.007) in the front-back direction. In addition, men had significantly lower HFB ratios in the left-right direction (P = 0.032) and LFB ratios in the front-back (P = 0.013), whereas women had significantly lower HFB ratios in the left-right direction (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS LS was associated with significantly lower ratios for both the HFB in the left-right direction and LFB in the front-back direction. This understanding of the power spectral characteristics of LS may be useful in the context of pathology and therapeutic intervention. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Among body composition parameters measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, the extracellular water-to-total body water (ECW/TBW) ratio is a known prognostic or related factor for various diseases. While concepts such as locomotive syndrome risk, frailty, and sarcopenia are gaining popularity in Japan, their relationship with the ECW/TBW ratio has not been examined in detail. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between them. METHODS Of 1081 individuals who underwent health checkups, 550 were included in this study. The evaluations included a two-step test, stand-up test, and a 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale questionnaire. Frailty was diagnosed based on the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria. Sarcopenia was evaluated according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. The aforementioned ratio was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS The ECW/TBW ratio significantly increased with locomotive syndrome risk, frailty, and sarcopenia (p < 0.001 each). Nevertheless, no significant difference was found between robust and pre-frailty groups (p = 0.71) and normal and pre-sarcopenia groups (p = 0.93). Furthermore, after correcting for age, sex, and body mass index, multiple regression analysis revealed that locomotive syndrome risk (p < 0.001) and frailty (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with an increase in the ECW/TBW ratio, whereas sarcopenia was not (p = 0.97). CONCLUSIONS An increase in the ECW/TBW ratio may reflect locomotive syndrome risk and frailty, but not sarcopenia. In bioelectric impedance analysis, this ratio is an important indicator; if it is high, it is necessary to consider locomotive syndrome risk and frailty.

Abstract
Purpose Aging of society has increased the need for prolongation of a healthy lifespan through maintenance of physical function. Prediction of future physical function may be possible by screening for stage 1 locomotive syndrome (LS). In this prospective study, we examined the influence of LS stage 1 at baseline (2011) on physical performance after 5 years (2016) in a community-dwelling cohort. Methods The participants were elderly adults aged >40 years who attended public health checkups as part of the Yakumo Study. LS screening in 2011 and 2016 was performed using the 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale (GLFS-25), the stand-up test, and the two-step test. LS of stage 1 or 2 was defined if the participant met the criteria in any of the three tests. Participants not meeting LS criteria were defined as the no risk group. Physical performance tests (10 m gait time, back muscle strength, 3 m TUG, and maximum stride) were also performed in 2011 and 2016. Results A total of 113 subjects (49 males, 64 females; average age 65.0 years) were followed from 2011 to 2016. At baseline, 73 (65%) had no risk, 29 (25%) had stage 1 LS, and 11 (10%) had stage 2 LS. Five years later, 51 (45%) had no risk, 45 (40%) had stage 1 LS, and 17 (15%) had stage 2 LS. Of the 73 subjects with no risk at baseline, 23 (32%) had stage 1 LS and 1 (1%) had stage 2 LS after 5 years. The baseline stage 1 LS group had significantly worse physical performance after 5 years, compared to the baseline no risk group (p < 0.05). Conclusions This longitudinal study showed that stage 1 LS screening is important for prevention of motor dysfunction in middle-aged and elderly people.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Prospective research in middle-aged and elderly people. OBJECTIVE To investigate low back pain (LBP) and neuropathic pain (NeP); spinal alignment and range of motion (ROM); spinal degenerative changes in plain radiography; osteoporosis; muscle strength; and physical ability as possible risk factors for poor quality of life (QOL). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA The aging of society has led to an increase in elderly people with chronic pain, including LBP and NeP. However, there has been no analysis of NeP and spinal sagittal alignment as potential risk factors for decreased QOL in the healthy general population. METHODS The subjects were 1128 people (male 473, female 655, average age: 64.3 yrs) who attended an annual health checkup in Yakumo study. The prevalence of LBP and sciatica were investigated using a visual analogue scale (VAS), and NeP was defined as more than or equal to 13 points on the painDETECT questionnaire. Sagittal spinal alignment with spinal ROM was also measured. Body mass index, muscle strength, physical ability, osteoporosis, and lumbar degenerative changes were measured, and 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) was used for QOL analysis. RESULTS NeP was present in 113 people (10%). The NeP (+) subjects had significantly more severe pain, lower gait speed, higher osteoporosis rate, lumbar kyphosis, and larger spinal inclination (P < 0.01) compared with NeP (-) subjects. On SF-36, physical and mental QOL were significantly lower for NeP (+) subjects (P < 0.0001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for age and sex, NeP (+) (odds ratio [OR]: 3.01), positive spinal inclination (OR: 1.14), and high VAS for LBP (OR: 1.04) were identified as risk factors for low physical QOL, and NeP (+) (OR: 5.32) was the only significant risk factor for low mental QOL. CONCLUSION These results suggest that interventions for NeP and other identified risk factors may contribute to improvement of low physical and mental QOL in middle-aged and elderly people. Abstract
Objectives The importance of preventive medicine in an aging society is increasing. Locomotive syndrome (LS) is attracting increasing attention. Recently, advances in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices have made it possible to automatically measure waist circumference (WC). Nevertheless, there have been no reports evaluating the agreement or interchangeability between WC measured manually and using BIA. Therefore, we aimed to perform these analyses in the context of health checkups and investigated the associations with LS risk. Methods We enrolled 597 participants who underwent the following: two-step tests and stand-up tests; evaluations using a 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale for the LS risk test; anthropometric marker measurements including WC measured by manual and BIA; and measurements of total cholesterol and triglycerides. We used Bland–Altman analysis to calculate agreement and interchangeability of the WC measurement using BIA and the manual method. A statistical comparative study was then conducted between normal and LS risk groups. Subsequently, significant risk factors for LS were investigated using multivariate analysis. Results The Bland–Altman analysis showed that bias (BIA-manual) was negative overall (−2.024), for males (−1.418) and for females (−2.460), suggesting underestimation using BIA compared with manual measurements. Interchangeability was found between WC measurement by BIA and by manual methods, because the percentage error was less than 15% overall (12.3%), for males (10.2%) and for females (13.8%). Univariate analysis showed that WC was significantly higher in the LS risk group than in the normal group. Multivariate analysis adjusted for confounding factors showed that increase in WC significantly correlated with LS risk. Conclusions BIA and manual methods for measuring WC are interchangeable. The increase in WC measured by BIA was significantly associated with LS risk. It is important to continue focusing on increased WC and early detection of LS risk.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective was to identify risk factors for new development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) 5 years later in a prospective longitudinal cohort study. METHODS A total of 178 subjects (male 72, female 106, mean age 68 years) without GERD in 2013 were examined for GERD in 2018. A Frequency Scale for Symptoms of GERD score ≥ 8 was used for diagnosis of GERD. Body mass index, spinal alignment, muscle strength, physical ability, number of oral drugs per day, sarcopenia, and frailty determined in 2013 and 2018 were compared between the GERD(+) and GERD(-) groups in 2018. Aggravation of lumbar kyphosis and spinal inclination from 2013 to 2018 was defined as a change of ≥ 5° or ≥ 10°, and weakening of back muscle strength as a change of ≥ 10 kg. QOL (SF-36) was also examined. RESULTS Of the 178 subjects, 38 (21%) were diagnosed as GERD(+) in 2018. Sarcopenia in 2018 was significantly related to a GERD(+) status (p < 0.05). The GERD(+) group had significantly higher rates of changes of lumbar kyphosis ≥ 5° (p < 0.005) and ≥ 10° (p < 0.0001), of spinal inclination ≥ 5° (p < 0.0001), and of decreased back muscle strength ≥ 10 kg (p < 0.05). SF-36 were also significantly worse in the GERD(+) group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This prospective longitudinal study firstly demonstrated that lumbar kyphotic change, aggravation of spinal inclination, decreased back muscle strength, and sarcopenia are significant risk factors for new development of GERD. Management and prevention of these factors may contribute to reduction of GERD symptoms and increased QOL in middle-aged and elderly people. Abstract
BACKGROUND Locomotive syndrome risk level has been recently proposed to evaluate physical ability. Impaired balance control is one of the most important risk factors for falls. However, the relationship between locomotive syndrome risk and postural sway according to the balance test is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between locomotive syndrome risk and balance test results, including muscle mass and physical function, in a large-scale prospective general health checkup. METHODS We enrolled 292 participants who underwent a basic health checkup and conducted a two-step test, stand-up test, evaluation using a 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale for the locomotive syndrome risk test, balance test, appendicular skeletal muscle mass measurement by bioelectrical impedance analysis, evaluation of physical function by the timed-up-and-go test, and back muscle and grip strength evaluation. A statistical comparative study was then conducted between normal and locomotive syndrome risk groups. Subsequently, significant factors for locomotive syndrome risk were investigated by multivariate analysis. RESULTS The comparative study was conducted by adjusting age and sex using a generalized linear model. No significant difference in muscle mass existed, but postural sway in the balance test significantly increased in the people at locomotive syndrome risk. Among the four posturographic variables by balance test, increase in back-and-forth sway was the most remarkable variable associated with locomotive syndrome risk together with back muscle strength, body mass index, and the timed-up-and-go test by logistic regression analysis. This posturographic variable was significantly related to the timed-up-and-go test and leg skeletal muscle mass by multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS A relationship was recognized between locomotive syndrome risk and postural sway. In particular, increase in back-and-forth sway was an important factor for locomotive syndrome risk. If the balance test shows an increase in back-and-forth sway, attention should be paid to locomotive syndrome risk for possible intervention and early treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The phase angle (measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis [BIA]) is an indicator of cell membrane function and used for prognostic evaluation of diseases. Locomotive syndrome (LS) has been advocated in the evaluation of physical ability. This study aimed to determine the relationship between LS and the phase angle as well as muscle mass, muscular strength, and motor function. METHODS In this prospective cohort study, 541 patients undergoing a health checkup participated. All participants were assessed using a 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale for the diagnosis of LS, phase angle, and muscle mass measurements via BIA. Grip strength, back muscle strength, and 3-m timed-up-and-go (TUG) test measurements were used as physical performance tests. Patients were divided into non-LS and LS groups, and their characteristics were compared. We assessed whether the phase angle was related to LS, whether it could be a risk factor in multivariate analysis, and the most important part of the phase angle. RESULTS Age, the whole body phase angle, grip strength, back muscle strength, and TUG test result were significantly different between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the whole body phase angle and TUG test result were risk factors of LS. Based on the subanalysis targeting specific phase angles, the trunk phase angle was a significant important factor for LS. CONCLUSION The phase angle was significantly related to LS, and the decreased phase angle was a significant risk factor of LS together with the TUG test result. Furthermore, in subgroup analysis, the phase angle of the trunk was a significant important factor of LS. BIA can be performed conveniently, and it has been widely used for health checkups and in clinical practice. Focusing on the phase angle in BIA may be additionally helpful for the early detection and early intervention of LS.

Abstract
Objectives: Neck circumference (NC) has been associated with cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. However, the association between NC and frailty remains unknown. We aimed to determine the relationship between frailty and NC in middle-aged and elderly women.Methods: Frailty was diagnosed based on the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria. Of women who underwent health checkup, 295 women with the following measurements were targeted: four trunk circumferences and appendicular skeletal muscle index (aSMI) measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis; albumin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein levels measured using a blood test; and physical function measured using back muscle strength and timed up-and-go test (TUG). Normal and frailty group comparisons were conducted using a statistical method.Results: Significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, body mass index, all trunk circumferences, aSMI, back muscle strength, and TUG. Logistic regression analysis showed that NC was more related with frailty among the four trunk circumferences. In multiple regression analysis, declining NC was significantly associated with frailty.Conclusion: In middle-aged and elderly women, NC has a significant association with frailty. Declining NC was shown to be an anthropometric marker of frailty, and may be a frailty risk factor.

Abstract
The phase angle, which is measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), is a clinically important bioimpedance parameter used for nutritional assessment and evaluating the risk of various diseases, such as locomotive syndrome (LS). It remains unclear if the phase angle is associated with frailty (fragile state of physical and mental health). We therefore examined this association in a large prospective sample. Of 1081 individuals receiving health checkups, 550 (male; 235, female; 365) were enrolled in this study. We applied the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria to evaluate frailty and administered the 25-Item Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale to diagnose LS. The phase angle was measured via BIA. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between the phase angle and frailty. For all participants and for each sex, the phase angle was significantly lower among individuals with frailty. After controlling for age, sex, and body mass index, we found that a low phase angle was a significant risk factor of frailty. As a result of multiple regression analysis including other confounding factors, among male participants, a low phase angle was significantly related with both frailty (P = 0.015) and LS (P < 0.001), whereas among female participants, the low phase angle had a stronger association with frailty (P = 0.001) than with LS (P = 0.52). Our findings suggest that a low angle is a risk factor of frailty. Furthermore, among female participants, frailty has a stronger relation with the phase angle than does LS. Therefore, the phase angle may be considered a useful indicator of frailty that does not require lengthy or costly assessment.

Abstract
Purpose Osteoporosis is a common age-related disorder leading to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture. Early diagnosis of osteoporosis is a vital step in providing early therapeutic intervention. Serum cystatin C is a marker of early renal dysfunction, a predictor of cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, and an inhibitor of the differentiation of osteoclast precursor cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum cystatin C and osteoporosis. Methods We enrolled 46 subjects who attended a health checkup and underwent measurement of bone status by quantitative ultrasound and determination of the level of serum cystatin C. A comparative study was conducted between those with and without osteoporosis for all subjects collectively and in two subgroups aged <65 and ≥65 years. Results Serum cystatin C levels were strongly correlated with age, creatinine, and bone status data, with significant negative correlations with stiffness, T-score, and percentage of young adult mean. Among patients with osteoporosis, serum cystatin C was significantly higher even after adjustment for age and sex, whereas no significant difference was noted in creatinine. For patients aged ≥ 65 years, serum cystatin C was significantly higher in subjects with osteoporosis, although there was no significant difference in age between normal subjects and those with osteoporosis. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate an association between serum cystatin C and osteoporosis. Serum cystatin C is significantly higher in osteoporosis and in particular may be a useful marker for osteoporosis among middle and elderly people aged ≥ 65 years. Measurement of serum cystatin C can be carried out easily and may contribute to early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The locomotive syndrome (LS) risk test has recently been advocated for the evaluation of physical ability. Phase angle measurement by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an indicator of cellular health and muscle mass. We aimed to investigate how muscle mass and phase angle are related to LS risk stage. METHODS A prospective cohort study was conducted in 311 patients who were undergoing a health checkup. All participants performed the two-step test, stand-up test, and 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale components of the LS risk test. Muscle mass and phase angle were measured using BIA. A comparison study was conducted among the three LS risk stages. RESULTS In the trend test, phase angle decreased significantly as the LS risk stage progressed, whereas muscle mass did not show a significant difference. After adjusting for age and sex, phase angle showed a significant difference among all LS risk stages. Muscle mass did not show a significant difference between no risk and stage 1. CONCLUSION Compared to muscle mass, phase angle more strongly reflects LS risk and becomes significantly reduced at later LS risk stages. Phase angle can be a useful screening tool for LS risk.
