Abstract
Introduction Depression represents a significant global health burden, ranking as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, and nutrition plays a key role in mental health. Vitamin A, essential for immune and neurological function, has shown conflicting associations with depression. Magnesium, essential for neurotransmission and neuroprotection, is associated with a reduced risk of depression. Importantly, magnesium is required for the activation of enzymes involved in vitamin A metabolism, suggesting a potential interaction between these nutrients in depression. However, this interaction remains poorly understood. This study investigates how magnesium intake modifies the relationship between vitamin A and depression, with the aim of elucidating their combined effects and informing personalized dietary strategies for depression prevention. Research design and methods Data for this study were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2016, involving a total of 60,936 participants. The final analysis included 25,277 adults aged ≥20 years (Female: 12,581, Male:12,696), excluding pregnant women, individuals under 20, and those with incomplete data. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), supplemented by self-reporting questionnaires. Dietary intake was assessed via a recall interview at the mobile examination center (MEC). Dietary vitamin A intake, treated as a continuous variable, was categorized based on the median intake value. Stratified analyses were conducted based on sex and magnesium intake levels (Female: low: <310 mg/day; high: ≥310 mg/day; Male: low: <400 mg/day; high: ≥400 mg/day). Results Our cross-sectional study showed that in women with low magnesium intake, higher vitamin A intake was associated with a reduced risk of depression (OR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.76-0.92, p < 0.001), whereas no significant association was observed in the high magnesium group. Men did not show such an interaction. There was also a significant interaction between vitamin A levels and magnesium intake in reducing the incidence of depression (p-value for interaction = 0.145). Conclusion Our study suggests that a sex-specific interaction between dietary magnesium and vitamin A in modulating depression risk. This interaction highlights the potential role of combined nutritional interventions in depression management. Further randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Objective The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hyperuricemia necessitate the identification of contributing factors to better understand disease progression and develop effective therapies. This study aimed to investigate the association between Magnesium Depletion Score (MDS) and hyperuricemia. Methods A cross-sectional study was sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2018. Hyperuricemia was defined by serum uric acid levels. MDS was calculated by incorporating factors affecting renal magnesium reabsorption.Weighted multivariable logistic regression was employed to assess the association between MDS and hyperuricemia, with sensitivity analyses to confirm robustness. Additionally, Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to further elucidate the relationship. Results Compared to the low MDS group (0-1), the odds ratios (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the middle MDS group (2) and high MDS group (3-5) were 1.76 (1.52-2.04), and 3.14(2.54-3.88), respectively. The RCS analysis illustrated a linear dose-response relationship between MDS and hyperuricemia. The ROC analysis demonstrated that MDS had an area under the curve of 0.720 (95 % CI, 0.717-0.721). Conclusions This study highlights a strong association between MDS and hyperuricemia risk, emphasizing the importance of addressing magnesium deficiency in hyperuricemic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypothyroidism is a common thyroid disease affecting the health of the global population and oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in the pathophysiological process of hypothyroidism. Comprehensive dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), representing the overall dietary antioxidant capacity, has been proved to be associated with a variety of diseases. However, association between CDAI and hypothyroidism risk remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the association of CDAI and hypothyroidism risk. METHODS Data of this study were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database 2007-2012. CDAI, represents the overall dietary nutrients capacity, was calculated by selenium, zinc, magnesium, vitamin A, C and E. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) > 5.6 mIU/L was defined as hypothyroidism. The weighted multivariate logistic regression models and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis were utilized to evaluate the relationship between CDAI and hypothyroidism, with odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup and sensitivity analysis were further evaluated the relationship between CDAI and hypothyroidism. Moreover, the association between the components of CDAI and hypothyroidism was also explored. RESULTS Totally, 7,959 subjects with information of complete dietary intake and thyroid function measurement were included. Of whom, 213 (2.68%) subjects had hypothyroidism. After adjusted all covariates, we observed high CDAI was related to low hypothyroidism risk (OR = 0.44, 95%CI: 0.27-0.71). This relationship was prominent in subjects with aged < 65 years old (OR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.16-0.62), male (OR = 0.39, 95%CI: 0.15-0.99) and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (OR = 0.38, 95%CI: 0.19-0.76). The association between high CDAI and low hypothyroidism risk remained significant when subjects using thyroid hormones were excluded (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.27-0.81). CONCLUSION High CDAI was related to low hypothyroidism risk among U.S. adults. Our finding showed that the intake of an antioxidant-rich dietary is a potential method to reduce the risk of hypothyroidism.

Abstract
The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ whose hormones enable the proper functioning of the organism. The normal function of this organ is influenced by internal and external factors. One of the external factors is trace elements. Trace elements in appropriate concentrations are necessary for the proper functioning of the thyroid. Fe, Cu, Mn, I, Zn, and Se are part of the enzymes involved in oxidative stress reduction, while Cd, Hg, and Pb can increase ROS production. Cu and Fe are necessary for the correct TPO synthesis. An imbalance in the concentration of trace elements such as Fe, Cu, Co, I, Mn, Zn, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Se in thyroid cells can lead to thyroid diseases such as Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and postpartum thyroiditis. Lack of adequate Fe levels may lead to hypothyroidism and cancer development. The thyroid gland's ability to absorb I is reversibly reduced by Co. Adequate levels of I are required for correct thyroid function; both deficiency and excess can predispose to the development of thyroid disorders. High concentrations of Mn may lead to hypothyroidism. Furthermore, Mn may cause cancer development and progression. Insufficient Zn supplementation causes hypothyroidism and thyroid nodule development. Cd affecting molecular mechanisms may also lead to thyroid disorders. Hg accumulating in the thyroid may interfere with hormone secretion and stimulate cancer cell proliferation. A higher risk of thyroid nodules, cancer, autoimmune thyroiditis, and hypothyroidism were linked to elevated Pb levels. Se deficiency disrupts thyroid cell function and may lead to several thyroid disorders. On the other hand, some of the trace elements may be useful in the treatment of thyroid diseases. Therefore, the effects of trace elements on the thyroid require further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Mediterranean diet (MedD) exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects that are beneficial in autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD). Recently, a gluten-free diet (GFD) has been proposed for non-celiac patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), but its usefulness is under debate. The present pilot study evaluates the effects of these two dietary regimes, with a focus on redox homeostasis, in HT. PATIENTS AND METHODS 45 euthyroid HT patients (30 F; median age 42 years) were randomly assigned to different dietary regimes: MedD (n = 15), GFD (n = 15) and free diet (FD, n = 15). Thyroid function tests, autoantibodies, and oxidative stress markers (Advanced glycation end products, AGEs; glutathione peroxidase (GPx), thioredoxin reductase (TRxR), and total plasma antioxidant activity (TEAA) were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. RESULTS In the MedD group, significantly lower values of AGEs and higher values of GPX, TRX and TEAA with anti-oxidant action were detected (p < 0.05) at 12 weeks compared to baseline, and compared to the GFD and FD groups, in which the oxidative stress parameters did not change significantly (p > 0.05). No significant differences in serum levels of TSH, FT4, Ab-Tg, Ab-TPO compared to baseline were found in any group. CONCLUSIONS This pilot study confirms the protective effect of the MedD against oxidative stress, while a GFD does not significantly influence markers of oxidative stress and/or thyroid autoimmunity/function parameters.

Abstract
Oxidative stress contributes to the development of cardiometabolic diseases and cancers. Numerous studies have highlighted the adverse effects of high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the progression of chronic noncommunicable diseases and also during infections. On the other hand, antioxidants play a crucial role in preventing oxidative stress or postponing cell damage via the direct scavenging of free radicals or indirectly via the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway, among others. Dietary antioxidants can be obtained from various sources, mainly through a plant-based diet, including fruits and vegetables. The dietary antioxidant index (DAI) has been developed to assess total antioxidant intake from diet. This review delineated the performance of DAI in the risk assessment of different diseases. It is suggested that a high DAI score prevents obesity-related diseases, including diabetes mellitus, hyperuricemia, dyslipidemia, and metabolic (dysfunction)-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Additionally, DAI is negatively associated with Helicobacter pylori and Human papillomavirus infection, thus reducing the risk of gastric and cervical cancer. Also, a high intake of antioxidants prevents the development of osteoporosis, miscarriage, infertility, and mental illnesses. However, further prospective observations and clinical trials are warranted to confirm the application of DAI in preventing diseases that have been studied.

Abstract
Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are among the most prevalent organ-specific autoimmune disorders, with thyroid hormones playing a pivotal role in the gastrointestinal system's structure and function. Emerging evidence suggests a link between AITDs and the gut microbiome, which is a diverse community of organisms that are essential for digestion, absorption, intestinal homeostasis, and immune defense. Recent studies using 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing of fecal samples from AITD patients have revealed a significant correlation between a gut microbiota imbalance and the severity of AITDs. Progress in animal models of autoimmune diseases has shown that intervention in the gut microbiota can significantly alter the disease severity. The gut microbiota influences T cell subgroup differentiation and modulates the pathological immune response to AITDs through mechanisms involving short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), and mucosal immunity. Conversely, thyroid hormones also influence gut function and microbiota composition. Thus, there is a bidirectional relationship between the thyroid and the gut ecosystem. This review explores the pathogenic mechanisms of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in AITDs, characterizes the gut microbiota in Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), and examines the interactions between the gut microbiota, thyroid hormones, T cell differentiation, and trace elements. The review aims to enhance understanding of the gut microbiota-thyroid axis and proposes novel approaches to mitigate AITD severity through gut microbiota modulation.

Abstract
Population zinc and iron status appear to be associated with an increased risk of thyroid function abnormalities and thyroid autoimmunity (AITD). In the present study, we aimed to determine whether zinc and/or iron levels (assessed by ferritin levels) were associated with the presence of AITD and with alterations in thyroid function. A population-based case-control study (n = 1048) was conducted (cases: n = 524; controls: n = 524). Participants were measured for blood concentrations of zinc and ferritin, TSH, FT4, FT3, and thyroid autoantibodies. No significant differences were found in relation to ferritin levels between cases and controls. Among cases, the prevalence of low zinc levels in those with hypothyroidism (both subclinical and overt) was 49.1% [odds ratio (OR) of low zinc levels: 5.926; 95% CI: 3.756-9.351]. The prevalence of low zinc levels in participants with hyperthyroidism (both subclinical and overt) was 37.5% [OR of low zinc levels: 3.683; 95% CI: 1.628-8.33]. The zinc value that best discriminated the highest frequency of AITD was 70.4 µg/dL [sensitivity: 0.947, 1-specificity: 0.655, specificity: 0.345]. The highest frequency of AITD was calculated based on a zinc value <70 µg/dL (relative to a normal value), with this frequency being significantly higher in cases than in controls [OR: 9.3; 95% CI: 6.1-14.3 (p = 0.001)]. In conclusion, the results of our study suggest that zinc deficiency is associated with an increased frequency of functional thyroid disorders and thyroid autoimmunity.

Abstract
The mechanisms underlying subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) remain unclear, making timely and accurate differentiation between hypothyroidism and SCH, as well as severity assessment, challenging. This study aimed to investigate the role of NFE2 like bZIP transcription factor 2 (Nrf2), gp91phox, and interleukin-17 (IL-17) in the pathogenesis of SCH. In this prospective comparative study, 105 SCH patients, 105 hypothyroidism patients, and 105 healthy individuals were enrolled from January 2022 to August 2023. SCH patients were categorized into mild-moderate and severe groups based on thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Levels of TSH, free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3), thyroglobulin antibodies (TG-Ab), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab), cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-ch), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-ch) were measured. Nrf2, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, and gp91phox levels were tested using ELISA. Nrf2, IL-17 and gp91phox were significantly higher in SCH and hypothyroidism patients compared to the healthy controls, with hypothyroidism patients showing the highest levels. Nrf2 levels were negatively correlated with TSH, TG-Ab and IL-17, but not gp91phox. Nrf2, IL-17 and gp91phox could be used for diagnosis of SCH and severe SCH. Only TG-Ab, IL-17 and gp91phox were independent risk factors for severe SCH. This study demonstrates a negative correlation between serum Nrf2 levels and SCH severity. TG-Ab, IL-17, and gp91phox are independent risk factors, and their associations with SCH pathology suggest their potential roles in the disease mechanism. These findings provide insights into SCH pathogenesis and highlight the need for further research to elucidate their diagnostic or prognostic significance.

Abstract
Malnutrition, which includes macro- and micronutrient deficiencies, is common in individuals with allergic dermatitis, food allergies, rhinitis, and asthma. Prolonged deficiencies of proteins, minerals, and vitamins promote Th2 inflammation, setting the stage for allergic sensitization. Consequently, malnutrition, which includes micronutrient deficiencies, fosters the development of allergies, while an adequate supply of micronutrients promotes immune cells with regulatory and tolerogenic phenotypes. As protein and micronutrient deficiencies mimic an infection, the body's innate response limits access to these nutrients by reducing their dietary absorption. This review highlights our current understanding of the physiological functions of allergenic proteins, iron, and vitamin A, particularly regarding their reduced bioavailability under inflamed conditions, necessitating different dietary approaches to improve their absorption. Additionally, the role of most allergens as nutrient binders and their involvement in nutritional immunity will be briefly summarized. Their ability to bind nutrients and their close association with immune cells can trigger exaggerated immune responses and allergies in individuals with deficiencies. However, in nutrient-rich conditions, these allergens can also provide nutrients to immune cells and promote health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluates the association between vitamin A levels, AIP (the atherogenic index of plasma), and subclinical hypothyroidism. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted involving a representative sample of 3530 Chinese adults. Linear and logistic regression models were utilized to evaluate the associations between AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism, stratified by vitamin A levels. These analyses were further differentiated by sex and age groups to identify any demographic-specific associations. RESULTS In the vitamin A-sufficient group, an increase in AIP was associated with elevated total triiodothyronine (TT3) levels (β = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.09, 0.41, p = 0.003). Conversely, in the group with severe vitamin A deficiency, higher AIP levels were linked to increased free triiodothyronine (fT3) and TT3 levels and decreased free thyroxine (fT4) levels (β = 0.12, 0.03, and -0.29, respectively). Additionally, severe vitamin A deficiency increased the risk associated with AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism (OR = 1.66, 95%CI: 1.07, 2.58, p = 0.025). This risk was notably more pronounced in women and older adults, with odds ratios of 2.44 (95%CI: 1.55, 3.86, p < 0.001) and 2.14 (95%CI: 1.36, 3.38, p = 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin A deficiency may increase the risk of the association between AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism, particularly among women and the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal Disease (PD) associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition that affects the oral cavity of people living with T2DM. The mechanisms of the interaction between type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Periodontal diseases are complex and involve multiple pathophysiological pathways related to the systemic inflammatory process and oxidative stress. Non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSTP) is considered the standard for the management of this disease; however, patients with systemic conditions such as type 2 Diabetes Mellitus do not seem to respond adequately. For this reason, the use of complementary treatments has been suggested to support non-surgical periodontal treatment to reduce the clinical consequences of the disease and improve the systemic conditions of the patient. The use of zinc gluconate and magnesium oxide as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment and its effects on periodontal clinical features and oxidative stress in patients with Periodontal diseases -type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is poorly understood. METHODS A quasi-experimental study was performed in patients with periodontal diseases associated with T2DM. Initially, 45 subjects who met the selection criteria were included. 19 were assigned to a control group [non-surgical periodontal treatment] and 20 to the experimental group (non-surgical periodontal treatment + 500 mg of magnesium oxide and 50 mg of zinc gluconate for oral supplementation for 30 days) and the data of 6 patients were eliminated. Sociodemographic characteristics, physiological factors, biochemical parameters, and clinical features of periodontal diseases were assessed. RESULTS In this research a change in periodontal clinical characteristics was observed, which has been associated with disease remission. Additionally, a shift in MDA levels was presented for both groups. Furthermore, the supplementation group showed an increase in antioxidant enzymes when compared to the group that only received NSPT. CONCLUSION The use of Zinc gluconate and magnesium oxide can serve as a complementary treatment to non-surgical periodontal treatment, that supports the remission of PD as a result of regulation-reduction of oxidative biomarkers and increase in antioxidant enzymes activity. Abstract
Physicians and endocrinologists commonly face various questions related to dietary interventions during clinical encounters with their patients with thyroid disorders. Indeed, both patients and treating physicians have various misconceptions regarding thyroid-specific diets, possibly because of misinformation circulated in lay media or grey literature and the misinterpretation of contradictory scientific data, respectively. In this review, we attempted to answer some frequently asked questions by the patients in the backdrop of contraindicatory perceptions of physicians observed in our survey. Additionally, we tried to put a perspective on dietary factors related to thyroid disorders through the available scientific evidence to help make an informed decision-making.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review with meta-analyses of randomised trials evaluated the preventive effects of vitamin A supplements versus placebo or no intervention on clinically important outcomes, in people of any age. METHODS We searched different electronic databases and other resources for randomised clinical trials that had compared vitamin A supplements versus placebo or no intervention (last search 16 April 2024). We used Cochrane methodology. We used the random-effects model to calculate risk ratios (RRs), with 95% CIs. We analysed individually and cluster randomised trials separately. Our primary outcomes were mortality, adverse events and quality of life. We assessed risks of bias in the trials and used Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) to assess the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS We included 120 randomised trials (1 671 672 participants); 105 trials allocated individuals and 15 allocated clusters. 92 trials included children (78 individually; 14 cluster randomised) and 28 adults (27 individually; 1 cluster randomised). 14/105 individually randomised trials (13%) and none of the cluster randomised trials were at overall low risk of bias. Vitamin A did not reduce mortality in individually randomised trials (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.05; I²=32%; p=0.19; 105 trials; moderate certainty), and this effect was not affected by the risk of bias. In individually randomised trials, vitamin A had no effect on mortality in children (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.88 to 1.04; I²=24%; p=0.28; 78 trials, 178 094 participants) nor in adults (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.13; I²=24%; p=0.27; 27 trials, 61 880 participants). Vitamin A reduced mortality in the cluster randomised trials (0.84, 95% CI 0.76 to 0.93; I²=66%; p=0.0008; 15 trials, 14 in children and 1 in adults; 364 343 participants; very low certainty). No trial reported serious adverse events or quality of life. Vitamin A slightly increased bulging fontanelle of neonates and infants. We are uncertain whether vitamin A influences blindness under the conditions examined. CONCLUSIONS Based on moderate certainty of evidence, vitamin A had no effect on mortality in the individually randomised trials. Very low certainty evidence obtained from cluster randomised trials suggested a beneficial effect of vitamin A on mortality. If preventive vitamin A programmes are to be continued, supporting evidence should come from randomised trials allocating individuals and assessing patient-meaningful outcomes. Abstract
Objective Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) values serve as a summary of an individual's combined dietary antioxidant intake. Although specific antioxidants are known to reduce thyroid damage from oxidative stress, the relationship between the CDAI and thyroid function remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate this relationship in greater detail while focusing on a representative American adult population. Methods A total of 6,860 subjects from the 2007-2012 NHANES cohort were included in this study. Associations between CDAI values and thyroid function were evaluated with weighted linear regression models and smoothed curve fitting. Subgroup analyses were also performed. Results The weighted mean (SD) values for variables analyzed in this study included a CDAI of 0.13 (0.06), serum free T4 (FT4) levels of 0.80 (0.01) ng/dL, and serum total T4 (TT4) levels of 7.80 (0.03) ug/dL. Lower CDAI values were found to be associated with higher levels of FT4 and TT4 using both unadjusted and adjusted models that accounted for relevant confounders (adjusted model, FT4 β = -0.003, p = 0.005; TT4 β = -0.035, p < 0.001). This negative correlation persisted when CDAI was categorized into quartiles (FT4, p for trend = 0.014; TT4, p for trend = 0.003). Conclusion These findings suggest that a diet rich in antioxidants, as reflected by higher CDAI scores, is associated with significant decreases in levels of free and total T4. Further analyses will be necessary to better clarify the underlying mechanisms behind these observations.

Abstract
Secondary hyperparathyroidism has a significant impact on the overall well-being of the body. Capsiates, known for their antioxidant and metabolic properties, have emerged as a promising alternative treatment for secondary hyperparathyroidism. This study aims to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of capsiates in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. To achieve our research objectives, we conducted a study on patients' serum and examined changes in metabolic markers using serum metabolomics. We induced secondary hyperparathyroidism in rat through dietary intervention and divided them into four groups. The first group, referred to as the Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) group, received a low-calcium and high-phosphate diet (0.2% calcium, 1.2% phosphorus). The second group served as the control group, receiving a standard phosphate and calcium diet (0.6% calcium, 0.6% phosphorus). The third group, called the capsiates group, consisted of rat from the control group treated with capsiates (intraperitoneal injection of 2 mg/kg capsiates for 2 weeks after 2 weeks of dietary intervention). The fourth group was the capsiates-treated PTH group. Subsequently, we conducted ribose nucleic acid (RNA) sequencing on parathyroid gland cells and evaluated serum thyroxine levels, oxidative stress, expression of proteins associated with vascular neogenesis, measurement of SOD, GSH and 3-nitrotyrosine, micro-CT and histological staining. The serum metabolomic data revealed a significant decrease in capsiate levels in the secondary hyperparathyroidism group. Administration of capsiates to PTH rat resulted in increased calcium levels compared to the PTH group. Additionally, the PTH + Capsiates group showed significantly lower levels of PTH and phosphate compared to the PTH group. The PTH group exhibited a notable increase in the quantity and size of mitochondria compared to the control group. Following capsiates administration to the PTH group, there was a significant reduction in the number of mitochondria and length of microvilli, but an increase in the size of mitochondria compared to the PTH group. Sequencing analysis revealed that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 1 (VEGFR1) play crucial roles in this process. Vascular-related variables and downstream signalling were significantly elevated in hyperthyroidism and were alleviated with capsaicin treatment. Finally, combining capsiates with the PTH group improved bone mineral density, Tb.N, BV.TV, Cs.Th, Tt.Ar, OPG, Ob.TV and Oc.TV, as well as the mineral apposition rate, but significantly decreased Tb.Sp and Receptor Activator for Nuclear Factor-κ B Ligand (RANKL) compared to the PTH group. The findings suggest that capsiates can improve secondary hyperparathyroidism and ameliorated osteoporosis outcomes by inhibiting angiogenesis and reducing oxidative stress.

Abstract
Nutritional Immunity is one of the most ancient innate immune responses, during which the body can restrict nutrients availability to pathogens and restricts their uptake by the gut mucosa (mucosal block). Though this can be a beneficial strategy during infection, it also is associated with non-communicable diseases-where the pathogen is missing; leading to increased morbidity and mortality as micronutritional uptake and distribution in the body is hindered. Here, we discuss the acute immune response in respect to nutrients, the opposing nutritional demands of regulatory and inflammatory cells and particularly focus on some nutrients linked with inflammation such as iron, vitamins A, Bs, C, and other antioxidants. We propose that while the absorption of certain micronutrients is hindered during inflammation, the dietary lymph path remains available. As such, several clinical trials investigated the role of the lymphatic system during protein absorption, following a ketogenic diet and an increased intake of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, in reducing inflammation and ameliorating disease.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and thyroid disorders during pregnancy pose significant health concerns, impacting a substantial number of mothers globally. Globally, about 14% of pregnant women develop GDM, while thyroid disorders impact approximately 2%-3%. Both conditions contribute to adverse outcomes, including gestational hypertension, excessive fetal growth, and heightened perinatal morbidity. The central focus of this literature review is to examine the relationship between vitamin A, a crucial fat-soluble micronutrient in fetal development, and the occurrence of GDM and thyroid disorders during pregnancy. The primary research question investigates the association between vitamin A, GDM, and thyroid disorders, analyzing their combined impact on maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. The review underscores the potential of vitamin A to modulate the risk and outcomes of GDM and thyroid disorders during gestation, emphasizing its role in GDM development and resolution and its influence on thyroid function in pregnancy.

Abstract
Background Cystitis glandularis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the urinary system characterized by high recurrence rates, the reasons for which are still unknown. Objectives This study aims to identify potential factors contributing to recurrence and propose a simple and feasible prognostic model through nomogram construction. Design Patients with confirmed recurrence based on outpatient visits or readmissions were included in this study, which was subsequently divided into training and validation cohorts. Methods Machine learning techniques were utilized to screen for the most important predictors, and these were then employed to construct the nomogram. The reliability of the nomogram was assessed through receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, decision curve analysis, and calibration curves. Results A total of 252 patients met the screening criteria and were enrolled in this study. Over the 12-month follow-up period, the relapse rate was found to be 57.14% (n = 144). The five final predictors identified through machine learning were urinary infections, urinary calculi, eosinophil count, lymphocyte count, and serum magnesium. The area under curve values for all three time points assessing recurrence exceeded 0.75. Furthermore, both calibration curves and decision curve analyses indicated good performance of the nomogram. Conclusion We have developed a reliable machine learning-based nomogram for predicting recurrence in cystitis glandularis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of specific dietary patterns to alleviate depressive symptoms has gained increasing recognition. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a crucial criterion for assessing antioxidant diets. We examined the relationship between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults through a cross-sectional study conducted in the United States. METHODS We used weighted multivariate logistic regression models with subgroup analysis to study the relationship between CDAI and depression. Generalized additive models were used to determine whether there was a nonlinear association between them. We developed a two-piece linear regression model to calculate the inflection point utilizing a recursive strategy. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, the odds ratios (ORs; 95 % CI) for the correlation between CDAI and depression were 0.75 (0.67, 0.84). A saturation effect emerged for the overweight group, following which we calculated the inflection point for the overweight population, which displayed ORs (95 % CI) of 0.62 (0.47, 0.80) before the inflection point of 0.83 and the ORs (95 % CI) of 1.01 (0.77, 1.31) after 0.83. The interaction was statistically significant in the sex stratification of the obese population. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlighted a negative association between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults. Saturation effects and sex differences were observed in the overweight population.

Abstract
This study assessed the independent association of dietary selenium and zinc intakes with the risk of hypothyroidism and interaction effect between dietary selenium and zinc intakes with the risk of hypothyroidism in Americans. The data of this cross-sectional study was from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2012. The outcome was defined as new-onset hypothyroidism. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression and the subgroup analyses based on gender and body mass index (BMI) were conducted to evaluate the association between the dietary selenium and zinc intakes and new-onset hypothyroidism. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. A total of 6402 participants were included with 131 (2.05%) developed a hypothyroidism in this study. Compared with participants with high zinc intake, those with low zinc intake had a higher risk of new-onset hypothyroidism (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.05-2.90). Moreover, we also found a significant interaction between dietary selenium level intake and dietary zinc level intake on new-onset hypothyroidism risk (OR = 5.99, 95% CI: 1.77-20.23). There was an interaction between dietary selenium and zinc intakes on the risk of new-onset hypothyroidism, especially the significant effect for adults with women or overweight. The findings indicated that improving the levels of dietary zinc and selenium intake may be beneficial in preventing of new-onset hypothyroidism.

Do Dietary Supplements Affect Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Antioxidant Status in Adults with Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's Disease?-A Systematic Review of Controlled Trials. Abstract
This systematic review aims to summarise the results of controlled trials on dietary supplements (DS) usage and inflammation, oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and thyroid parameter improvement in hypothyroidism (HT)/Hashimoto's thyroiditis (AIT) patients. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42022365149). A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases resulted in the identification of nineteen randomised controlled trials and three non-randomised studies for the review; three studies examined the effect of supplementation with vitamin D, twelve studies-with selenium, and seven studies-with other DS. Based on very limited evidence, the lack of influence of vitamin D supplementation on inflammatory parameters was found, while no studies have examined oxidative stress and antioxidant status parameters, and only one provided results for a single thyroid parameter after an intervention. Some evidence was found proving that selenium supplementation may decrease inflammation and improve thyroid parameters, but reaching a conclusion about its influence on oxidative stress and antioxidant status is not possible because of the insufficient number of studies. Additionally, due to examining other DS (e.g., multicomponent, Nigella sativa, and genistein) only in single studies, conclusions cannot be drawn. Further long-term, high-quality randomised controlled trials are necessary to better understand the influence of DS on inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status, as well as their potential to improve thyroid gland function in HT/AIT patients.

Abstract
Hypothyroidism is a prevalent endocrine disorder and is associated with a variety of metabolic disturbances. This study aimed to investigate the polygenic variants associated with hypothyroidism risk and the interaction of polygenic risk scores (PRS) with dietary patterns in influencing disease risk in 56,664 participants aged >40 in a hospital-based cohort. The participants were classified as having hypothyroidism (n = 870) diagnosed by a physician and no hypothyroidism (n = 55,794). Genetic variants associated with hypothyroidism were identified using a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Genetic variants interacting with each other were selected using a generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction analysis, and the PRS generated was evaluated for interaction with lifestyle parameters. Coffee, alcohol, meat intake, and a Korean balanced diet were inversely associated with hypothyroidism risk, as were selenium, copper, and manganese intakes. White blood cell (WBC) counts and serum alkaline phosphatase and triglyceride concentrations were positively associated with hypothyroidism risk, as were osteoporosis and thyroid cancer. The GMDR analysis generated a three-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) model comprising dual oxidase-1 (DUOX1)_rs1648314; thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR)_rs75664963; and major histocompatibility complex, class-II, DQ Alpha-1 (HLA-DQA1)_rs17426593. The PRS derived from the three- and seven-SNP models were associated with a 2.11- and 2.32-fold increase in hypothyroidism risk, respectively. Furthermore, the PRS from the three-SNP model showed interactions with WBC counts, wherein the positive association with hypothyroidism risk was more pronounced in participants with low WBC counts than those with high WBC counts (≥4 × 109 /L). Dietary patterns, such as the plant-based diet (PBD) and the Western-style diet (WSD), along with smoking status, exhibited interactions with the PRS, influencing hypothyroidism risk. In participants with a high PRS, those in the high-PBD, low-WSD, and smoker groups had a higher proportion of hypothyroidism than those in the low-PBD, high-WSD, and non-smoker groups. In conclusion, genetic variants related to immunity and thyroid hormone secretion were linked to hypothyroidism risk, and their PRS interacted with PBD and WSD intake and smoking status. These results contribute to a better understanding of hypothyroidism and its prevention strategies for precision medicine intervention.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones and essential elements iodine (I), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), etc. play an important role in the work of many organs and systems of the body, including the immune system and the thyroid gland, and a violation of their supply can be the cause of pathological changes in them. In pathology, the interaction between thyroid hormones (TG), minerals and the immune system is disturbed. The review of the literature examines the immunomodulatory role of TG, minerals, their properties, and their participation in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD). The study of the relationship between the excess or deficiency of minerals and AITD is described. The basis of the development of AITD - Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), Graves' disease (GD), Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is the loss of immune tolerance to thyroid antigens - thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (Tg) and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R). Immune-mediated mechanisms - production of autoantibodies to thyroid antigens and lymphocytic thyroid infiltration - are involved in the pathogenesis of AITD. Insufficiency of regulatory T cells (Treg) and regulatory B cells (Breg), imbalance between Th17-lymphocytes and Treg-lymphocytes, abnormal production of pro-inflammatory cytokines has a significant influence on the progression of AITD. With AITD, the balance between oxidants and antioxidants is disturbed and oxidative stress (OS) occurs. The lack of modern effective pharmacological therapy of AITD prompted us to consider the mechanisms of influence, possibilities of immunocorrection of pathogenetic factors using TG, micro/macronutrients. In order to develop a more effective treatment strategy, as well as approaches to prevention, a critical analysis of the ways of immunotherapeutic use of dietary supplements of I, Se, Zn, Mg and other minerals in AITD was carried out.

Abstract
The thyroid hormones play a pivotal role in various physiological processes, including growth, metabolism regulation, and reproduction. While non-modifiable factors are known to impact thyroid function, such as genetics and age, nutritional factors are also important. Diets rich in selenium and iodine are conventionally acknowledged to be beneficial for the production and release of thyroid hormones. Recent studies have suggested a potential link between beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A (retinol), and thyroid function. Beta-carotene is known for its antioxidant properties and has been shown to play a role in the prevention of various clinical conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular and neurological diseases. However, its impact on thyroid function is still unclear. Some studies have suggested a positive association between beta-carotene levels and thyroid function, while others have found no significant effect. Conversely, the hormone produced by the thyroid gland, thyroxine, enhances the conversion of beta-carotene to retinol. Furthermore, vitamin A derivatives are being explored as potential therapeutic options for thyroid malignancies. In this review, we highlight the mechanisms through which beta-carotene/retinol and thyroid hormones interact and review the findings of clinical studies examining the association between beta-carotene consumption and thyroid hormone levels. Our review underscores the need for further research to clarify the relationship between beta-carotene and thyroid function.

Abstract
Impaired levels of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and iodine (I) in the organism may adversely affect the thyroid endocrine system. These trace elements play a role in the fight against oxidative stress as components of enzymes. Oxidative-antioxidant imbalance is considered a possible factor in many pathological conditions, including various thyroid diseases. In the available literature, there are few scientific studies showing a direct correlation of the effect of supplementation of trace elements on slowing down or preventing the occurrence of thyroid diseases in combination with the improvement of the antioxidant profile, or through the action of these elements as antioxidants. Among the available studies, it has been shown that an increase in lipid peroxidation levels and a decrease in the overall antioxidant defense status occur during such thyroid diseases as thyroid cancer, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and dysthyroidism. In studies in which trace elements were supplemented, the following were observed: a decrease in the level of malondialdehyde after supplementation with Zn during hypothyroidism and reduction in the malondialdehyde level after Se supplementation with a simultaneous increase in the total activity status and activity of antioxidant defense enzymes in the course of autoimmune thyroiditis. This systematic review aimed to present the current state of knowledge about the relationship between trace elements and thyroid diseases in terms of oxidoreductive homeostasis.

Abstract
A number of studies have shown that oxidative stress is related to the pathogenesis of several immunological diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), although there is no plausible mechanism to explain it. Thus, we aimed at hypothesizing and providing some possible mechanisms linking oxidative stress to autoimmunity aspects and its implications for HT, as well as adjuvant therapeutic proposals to mitigate the deleterious effects. Our hypothesis is that deficient eating habits, autoimmune regulator gene predisposing gene, dysbiosis and molecular mimicry, unfolded proteins and stress in the endoplasmic reticulum, and thymus involution appear to be the main potential factors leading to HT oxidative stress. Likewise, we show that the use of minerals selenium and zinc, vitamins D and C, as well as probiotics, can be interesting adjuvant therapies for the control of oxidative damage and poor prognosis of HT. Further clinical trials are needed to understand the real beneficial and side effects of these supplements.

Abstract
Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological diseases among young women of reproductive age. Thus far, it has not been possible to define a parameter that is sensitive and specific enough to be a recognized biomarker for diagnosing this disease. Nonspecific symptoms of endometriosis and delayed diagnosis are impulses for researching noninvasive methods of differentiating endometriosis from other gynecological disorders. We compared three groups of individuals in our research: women with endometriosis (E), patients suffering from other gynecological disorders (nonendometriosis, NE), and healthy women from the control group (C). Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models were developed based on selected serum biochemical parameters, specific regions of the serum’s infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR ATR) spectra, and combined data. Incorporating the spectral data into the models significantly improved differentiation among the three groups, with an overall accuracy of 87.5%, 97.3%, and 98.5%, respectively. This study shows that infrared spectroscopy and discriminant analysis can be used to differentiate serum samples among women with advanced endometriosis, women without this disease, i.e., healthy women, and, most importantly, also women with other benign gynecological disorders.

Abstract
Background The association between occurrence of thyroid nodules (TNs) and trace elements detectable in blood are still inconclusive. The present study sought to determine the relationship between selected trace elements and TNs in the iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China. Methods A total of 1,048 participants from four communities were enrolled. A number of medical checkups were conducted to collect relevant data on anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, glucose blood levels and lipid profiles, as well as data on thyroid function, presence of thyroid autoantibodies, and trace elements. Presence of TN was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Results Of the 1048 participants (49.5 ± 14.4 years old), 543 participants (51.8%) had TNs. Serum copper, magnesium and zinc levels are associated with the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. Subjects with higher levels of zinc, magnesium and copper had 1.23-fold, 1.04-fold, and 1.007-fold increased risks of the prevalence of TNs (P = 0.013, 0.017, and < 0.001, resp). Compared with the first quartile of copper content in serum, participants in the fourth quartile had the highest prevalence of TNs with an odds ratio of 8.90 (95% confidence interval (CI) 5.41, 14.94) among all participants. Women in the third quartile of magnesium level had a 1.86-fold (95%CI 1.05, 3.31) risk of the prevalence of TNs. Subjects in the highest quartile of zinc level had a 1.82-fold (95%CI 1.06, 3.16) risk of the prevalence of TNs in females. Conclusion TNs were found highly prevalent in females in the investigated population from an iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China. The imbalance of selected trace elements (copper, magnesium and zinc) in the body is related to the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. The observed correlation of copper on TNs warrants further studies.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The objective of this systematic review is to synthesize the available evidence on the effectiveness of magnesium supplements on the markers of inflammation, oxidative stress (OS), and metabolism in PCOS patients and to provide a basis for its clinical treatment. Electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library databases, Embase, Web of science, CMB, CNKI, VIP, Wan Fang and ClinicalTrials.gov) were searched from their inception until January 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for PCOS undergoing therapy with magnesium supplementation alone or in combination with other agents. The primary outcomes were the markers of blood glucose and OS.363 patients from nine RCTs were included in the current systematic review. Four of the nine studies reported the effects of magnesium supplementation alone on OS or metabolic markers in women with PCOS. Whilemagnesium supplementation alone did not show any significant improvement in the markers of inflammation, OS or metabolism in PCOS, seven of the nine articles reported the effect of magnesium co-supplementation on OS or metabolic markers in PCOS patients. Magnesium combined with vitamin E or zinc-calcium-vitamin D significantly improved glucose and lipid metabolism in PCOS patients. Magnesium intake alone did not lead to a significant improvement in the markers of OS, blood glucose, or serum lipids in PCOS. However, magnesium combined with other supplements (vitamin E, zinc, zinc-calcium-vitamin D) significantly improved serum hs-CRP, insulin, HOMA-IR, TG, TC levels, and the improvement in OS markers was inconclusive. The effect of magnesium and melatonin supplementation on the markers of metabolism needs to be further verified. Abstract
The terms "vitamin A" and "retinoids" encompass a group of fat-soluble compounds essential for human nutrition. Some of them (retinol, retinal, 9-cis-retinoic acid, tretinoin, and 13-cis-retinoic acid) are fully natural, while others are synthetic compounds used mostly for therapeutic purposes. Some evidence indicates that the nutritional status of these retinoids (i.e., the presence or absence of deficiency) is able to modulate thyroid gland metabolism. Vitamin A deficiency is tightly correlated with structural and functional impairment of the thyroid gland and is often associated with iodine deficiency. Furthermore, retinoids are involved in different immune functions, as well as in the process of activation, proliferation, and differentiation of regulatory T cells (Treg). This is particularly significant given the high prevalence of thyroid autoimmune disorders, whose pathogenesis seems to be related to the altered homeostasis of regulatory T cells. Retinoids are also involved in the modulation of gene expression via their interaction with nuclear receptors, and they also act as cofactors in cell growth and differentiation. The ability of retinoic acid to increase iodine uptake and sodium-iodine symporter activity in human thyroid cancer cell lines suggests that some retinoids and their derivatives may be of use in the treatment of different thyroid tumors. This minireview summarizes the current knowledge on the link between nutritional intake of vitamin A and various thyroid disorders.
