Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment, involving chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and pharmacotherapy (antibiotics, antineoplastics) perturbs the gut microbiota in pediatric patients, with enduring effects post-treatment. ALL treatments diminish microbial richness and diversity, favoring pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics may offer promise in mitigating these disruptions and associated side effects. This mini-review explores the impact of ALL treatment on the gut microbiota and the potential benefits of probiotics in pediatric oncology. Probiotics have shown promise in restoring gut microbial balance, reducing treatment-associated side effects, and potentially improving quality of life. However, potential adverse effects, particularly in immunocompromised patients, warrant caution. Notably, there's emerging interest in probiotics' role in bone health and mineral bioaccessibility. Further research is needed to elucidate probiotics' mechanisms and their broader impact on pediatric health. Integration of probiotics into ALL treatment and post-treatment regimens offers significant potential for improving patient outcomes and reducing treatment-related complications and long-lasting disruptions, although careful monitoring is essential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) and survivors are at high risk for numerous negative effects including decreased health-related quality of life (HRQOL). In order to understand the association between HM and QOL, we conducted this meta-analysis to systematically compare QOL between pediatric HM patients and survivors and controls. METHOD The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched. Data were analyzed using the random-effects model. RESULTS Of 6586 unique articles identified, 30 were included in this meta-analysis. Studies described 12 different HRQOL tools. Different QOL measures varied in their association with quality of life. When compared with Non-HM group, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) has a moderate effect size (standard mean difference, SMD = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32, 0.68; P < 0.001). When compared with health controls, it has a large effect size (SMD = -1.00, 95% CI: -1.47, -0.53; P < 0.001). In addition, Health utilities index mark (HUI), and the Pediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale (POQOLS) have a large (SMD = -0.81, 95% CI: -1.29, -0.33; P = 0.001) and a small (SMD = -0.10, 95% CI: -0.42, 0.22; P = 0.534) effect sizes when comparing overall controls. CONCLUSION Pediatric HM patients and survivors had lower QOL compared with healthy controls and higher QOL compared with Non-HM controls in most domains. Considering the negative impact of poor QOL on daily life and functional outcomes, future research should focus on proposing effective measures to improve QOL of this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare sleep and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children and adolescents with cancer who had pain, with those who had no pain during hospitalisation. METHOD A prospective comparative study was used to collect data from paediatric oncology units in three countries (Portugal, Brazil, USA). Participants (n = 118; 8-18 years) completed the Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Cancer module, which includes a pain subscale, and wore a wrist actigraph for at least 72 hr. RESULTS Almost half of the participants (48.3%) reported having pain. Sleep patterns were not affected by pain. Girls, adolescents and patients diagnosed with leukaemia/lymphoma who reported pain, had significantly lower HRQOL scores. Low sleep duration and HRQOL were found, irrespectively of pain status. CONCLUSIONS The low sleep duration and HRQOL score in children and adolescents with cancer highlight the importance of physical and psychosocial nursing interventions during hospitalisation. The mediating effect of gender, age and diagnoses on the relation between pain and HRQOL needs to be further understood.

Abstract
Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) undergo intense anticancer treatment. We systematically reviewed 22 studies evaluating 2,073 ALL patients' health-related quality of life (HRQL) and its clinical/demographic correlates during treatment. Overall HRQL was significantly reduced on treatment. Despite HRQL improvements over time, longitudinal studies reported a proportion of children continued to experience reduced HRQL after treatment completion. We found inconsistent associations between clinical/demographic factors and HRQL outcomes. Tentative evidence emerged for worse HRQL being associated with intensive phases of chemotherapy, corticosteroid therapy, experiencing greater toxicity, older age, and female sex. Longitudinal studies are needed to identify children at-risk of reduced HRQL.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study examined the different dimensions of fatigue (general, sleep/rest, cognitive), health related quality of life (HRQL) (physical, emotional, cognitive, social), and the relationships between fatigue and HRQL in hospitalized children and adolescents with cancer in Brazil. METHOD Participants were recruited from a pediatric oncology inpatient unit in a comprehensive cancer care hospital in southeast Brazil. They completed the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale and the PedsQL Inventory of Quality of Life (Generic and Cancer module) once during hospitalization. RESULTS The majority (66.7%) of the participants (n = 38; mean age 12.1 ± 2.9 years) had total fatigue scores < 75 on 0 to 100 scale; with the mean total fatigue score of 63.8 ± 18.5. The majority (72.2% generic; 83.3% cancer modules) had total PedsQL scores < 75 on 0 to 100 scale. The mean PedsQL score on generic module (61.1 ± 17.0) was similar to the mean PedsQL score cancer module (59.1 ± 16.7). Significant correlations were found between total fatigue and quality of life generic (r = 0.63, p = 0.000) and cancer module (r = 0.74, p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS The study is the first to report fatigue and health related quality of life in hospitalized children and adolescents with cancer in Brazil. Similar to experiences of other children in the world, our findings indicate that children and adolescents with cancer had problems with fatigue that were associated with low HRQL. Future studies are recommended to examine interventions (exercise, leisurely activities) that may alleviate fatigue and improve HRQL in pediatric patients with cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE For adolescents and young adults (AYAs), the impact of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment is likely to be distinct from other age groups given the unique and complex psychosocial challenges of this developmental phase. In this review of the literature, we report the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) issues experienced by AYAs diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and the Cochrane Library Databases were searched for publications reporting HRQoL of AYAs. Issues generated from interviews with AYAs or from responses to patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) were extracted. RESULTS 166 papers were reviewed in full and comprised 72 papers covering 69 primary studies, 49 measurement development or evaluation papers and 45 reviews. Of the 69 studies reviewed, 11 (16%) used interviews to elicit AYAs' descriptions of HRQoL issues. The majority of the PROMs used in the studies represent adaptations of paediatric or adult measures. HRQoL issues were organised into the following categories: physical, cognitive, restricted activities, relationships with others, fertility, emotions, body image and spirituality/outlook on life. CONCLUSION The HRQoL issues presented within this review are likely to be informative to health care professionals and AYAs. The extensive list of issues suggests that the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment during adolescence and young adulthood is widespread and reflects the complexities of this developmental phase.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important measure to evaluate a child's reported treatment experience. Although there are numerous studies of HRQoL in children undergoing curative cancer treatment, there is limited literature on factors that influence this. OBJECTIVE To review published studies that describe the HRQoL and associated factors in children undergoing curative cancer treatment. METHOD Full-text publications in English from January 2005 to March 2013 were searched in PubMed, PsychINFO, and CINAHL for children ≤18 years of age undergoing curative cancer treatment. HRQoL-associated factors were categorized as cancer diagnosis, treatment, child, family, and community. RESULTS Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently used generic and cancer-specific instruments were PedsQL (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory) Generic and PedsQL Cancer, respectively. Cancer diagnosis and treatment were the most frequently identified variables; fewer studies measured family and community domains. Gender, treatment intensity, type of cancer treatments, time in treatment, and cancer diagnosis were correlated with HRQoL. CONCLUSION Our study highlights the need to develop interventions based on diagnosis and treatment regimen to improve the HRQoL in children undergoing curative cancer treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the impact of treatment on HRQOL in long-term survivors of pediatric low-grade gliomas (LGGs) using an adult instrument. QOL of 121 patients with a diagnosis of LGG from the Mayo Clinic were assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ-C30 for cancer in general) and (EORTC QLQ-BN20 specific for brain tumors). Median follow-up was 21.9 years for the participants. Median age at diagnosis was 11.8 years and at assessment was 33 years. Mean (standard deviation) global QOL score for the study was 78 (18) and 76.4 (22.8) in a reference population of healthy adults. Using QLQ-C30, radiation treated patients compared to non-radiation patients reported lower physical functioning (p = 0.002), role functioning (p = 0.004), and more constipation problems (p < 0.001). Patients with tumor recurrence reported lower role functioning (p = 0.016), social functioning (p = 0.040), and more financial problems (p = 0.029) compared to their counterparts. Using QLQ-BN20, patients with deep tumors compared to cortical tumors reported more bladder control problems (p = 0.016). Radiation treated patients also reported more bladder control problems (p < 0.001) compared to their counterparts. In the multivariable analysis, radiation therapy remained an independent predictor of physical and role functioning as well as symptoms related to brain tumors like visual disorders and motor dysfunction. Global QOL of long-term survivors of pediatric LGGs is similar to that of a reference population of healthy adults. The following tumor and treatment related factors were most consistently associated with poorer QOL: CNS tumor location, post-operative radiation, and tumor recurrence. Future studies are necessary to identify strategies to improve QOL in this subgroup of patients.
