Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of and risk factors for overweight and obese among Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS This analytical cross-sectional study included 16,640 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years across four provinces of China in 2016. Physical characteristics and responses to questionnaires were analyzed. Body Mass Index (BMI) and the prevalence of overweight and obesity were calculated. RESULTS Among children and adolescents, the overall prevalence of overweight and obesity in 2016 in four regions of China was 27.2% and 29.6%, respectively. Among different stages and sexes, the highest prevalence of obesity (15.8%) was observed in adolescent boys. From childhood to adolescence, the obesity rate among boys increased by 0.7% (from 15.1% to 15.8%), while the obesity rate among girls decreased by 0.9% (from 10.8% to 9.9%). Children and adolescents who were overweight or obese had significantly higher systolic blood pressures, larger waist circumferences and larger hip sizes than those with a normal BMI. Logistic regression analyses identified thirteen factors associated with overweight or obesity in children and adolescents. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is high among children and adolescents, especially among male adolescents in four regions of China. A suitable intervention program should not only help parents understand the serious risk of childhood obesity but also, more importantly, help to encourage a healthy lifestyle among children and adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence is appearing that ozone has adverse effects on health. However, the association between long-term ozone exposure and lung function is still inconclusive. OBJECTIVES To investigate the associations between long-term exposure to ozone and lung function in Chinese young adults. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study among 1594 college students with a mean age of 19.2 years at baseline in Shandong, China from September 2020 to September 2021. Lung function indicators were measured in September 2020 and September 2021, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced expiratory flow at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile of the FVC (FEF25, FEF50, and FEF75) and mean flow rate between 25% and 75% of the FVC (FEF25-75) were measured. Daily 10 km×10 km ozone concentrations come from a well-validated data-fusion approach. The time-weighted average concentrations in 12 months before the lung function test were defined as the long-term ozone exposure. The associations between long-term ozone exposure and lung function indicators in Chinese young adults were investigated using a linear mixed effects model, followed by stratified analyses regarding sex, BMI and history of respiratory diseases. RESULTS Each interquartile range (IQR) (8.9 µg/m3) increase in long-term ozone exposure were associated with a -204.3 (95% confidence interval (CI): -361.6, -47.0) ml/s, -146.3 (95% CI: -264.1, -28.4) ml/s, and - 132.8 (95% CI: -239.2, -26.4) ml/s change in FEF25, FEF50, and FEF25-75, respectively. Stronger adverse associations were found in female participants or those with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 and history of respiratory diseases. CONCLUSION Long-term exposure to ambient ozone is associated with impaired small airway indicators in Chinese young adults. Females, participants with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 and a history of respiratory disease have stronger associations.

Abstract
Objectives: Socioeconomic disparities in obesity have been observed in both childhood and adulthood. However, it remains unclear how the role of risk factors influencing these inequalities has evolved over time. Methods: Longitudinal data on 2,866 children and adolescents (6-17 years old) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were used to track their BMI during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Concentration Index was utilized to measure socioeconomic inequalities in obesity, while Oaxaca decomposition was employed to determine the share of different determinants of inequality. Results: The concentration index for obesity during childhood and adulthood were 0.107 (95% CI: 0.023, 0.211) and 0.279 (95% CI: 0.203, 0.355), respectively. Changes in baseline BMI (24.6%), parental BMI (10.4%) and socioeconomic factors (6.7%) were found to be largely responsible for the increasing inequality in obesity between childhood and adulthood. Additionally, mother's education (-7.4%) was found to contribute the most to reducing these inequalities. Conclusion: Inequalities in obesity during childhood and adulthood are significant and growing. Interventions targeting individuals with higher BMI, especially those who are wealthy, can significantly reduce the gap.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with lung function impairment. However, whether long-term improvements in air quality could improve lung function is unclear. OBJECTIVES To examine whether the reduction of long-term air pollution was associated with lung function improvement among Chinese young adults. METHODS We conducted a prospective quasi-experiment cohort study with 1731 college students in Shandong, China from September 2019 to September 2020, covering COVID-19 lockdown period. Data on air pollution concentrations were obtained from China Environmental Monitoring Station. Lung function indicators included forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1st second (FEV1) and forced expiratory flow at 50 % of FVC (FEF50%). We used linear mixed-effects model to examine the associations between the change of air pollutants concentrations and the change of lung function, and additional adjustments for indoor air pollution (IAP) source. We also conducted stratified analysis by sex. RESULTS Compared with 2019, the mean FVC, FEV1 and FEF50% were elevated by 414.4 ml, 321.5 ml, and 28.4 ml/s respectively in 2020. Every 5 μg/m3 decrease in annual average PM2.5 concentrations was associated with 36.0 ml [95 % confidence interval (CI):6.0, 66.0 ml], 46.1 ml (95 % CI:16.7, 75.5 ml), and 124.2 ml/s (95 % CI:69.5, 178.9 ml/s) increment in the FVC, FEV1, and FEF50%, respectively. Similar associations were found for PM10. The estimated impact was almost unchanged after adjusting for IAP source. There was no significant effect difference between males and females. CONCLUSION Long-term improvement of air quality can improve lung function among young adults. Stricter policies on improving air quality are needed to protect human health.

Abstract
Obesity is an increasing health problem all over the world. In combination with the current COVID-19 pandemic, this has turned into a massive challenge as individuals with overweight and obesity at all ages show a significant increase in their risk of getting severe COVID-19. Around 20% of all patients that were hospitalized for COVID-19 suffered from obesity alone, whereas obesity in combination with other metabolic comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, account for up to 60% of all hospitalizations in relation to COVID-19. Therefore, it is of immense importance to put the spotlight on the high incidence of obesity present already in childhood both by changing the individual minds and by encouraging politicians and the whole society to commence preventive interventions for achieving a better nutrition for all social classes all over the world. In the current review, we aim to explain the different pathways and mechanisms that are responsible for the increased risk of severe COVID-19 in people with overweight and obesity. Furthermore, we discuss how the pandemic has led to weight gains in many people during lockdown. At the end, we discuss the importance of preventing such an interface between a non-communicable disease like obesity and a communicable disease like COVID-19 in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the diagnosis efficacy of controlled attenuation parameters (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in the transient elastography of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its subtypes in children with obesity. METHODS Retrospectively analyze children with obesity in the Childhood Obesity Clinic of the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University from July 2020 to March 2021. The correlation between clinical data and NAFLD subtypes was analyzed, and included the relevant clinical data into the receiver operating characteristic curve for diagnosis and prediction. RESULTS 120 children aged between 6.1 and 17.8 years, with 70 males (58.33%), 50 females (41.67%), and a ratio of 1.4:1, were enrolled in the study. CAP and LSM correlated in all subtypes of NAFLD. The correlation was significant for diagnosing NAFLD in children with obesity when CAP > 258.00 dB/m and LSM > 4.65 kPa. It was also significant for NASH diagnosis when CAP > 276.00 dB/m and LSM > 5.15 kPa, while it was less significant for diagnosing NAFLD in children with obesity. CONCLUSIONS CAP and LSM have diagnostic efficacy for NAFLD and its subtypes in children with obesity, with optimal predictive values of CAP > 258.00 dB/m and LSM > 4.65 kPa for NAFLD in children with obesity, and CAP > 276.00 dB/m and LSM > 5.15 kPa for NASH in children with obesity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in severity of anxiety and depression symptoms, stress and sleeping quality after three months of mass quarantine for COVID-19 among undergraduate fresh students compared to their pre-COVID-19 measures. We used participants from the Chinese Undergraduate Cohort (CUC), a national prospective longitudinal study to examine the changes in anxiety and depression symptoms severity, stress and sleep quality after being under mass quarantine for three months. Wilcoxon matched pair signed-rank test was used to compare the lifestyle indicators. Severity of anxiety, depression symptoms, stress and sleep quality were compared with Wilcoxon signed-rank test. We used generalized estimating equation (GEE) to further quantify the change in mental health indicators and sleep quality after the COVID-19 mass quarantine compared to baseline. This study found that there was no deterioration in mental health status among Chinese new undergraduate students in 2020 after COVID-19 mass quarantine compared with the baseline measures in 2019. There was an improvement in sleep quality and anxiety symptoms. After adjusting for age, sex, exercise habit, time spent on mobile gadgets, and time spent outdoors, year 2020 was significantly associated with severity of depression symptoms in males (OR:1.52. 95%CI:1.05-2.20, p-value = 0.027). Year 2020 was significantly associated with the improvement of sleeping quality in total (OR:0.45, 95%CI:0.38-0.52, p < 0.001) and in all the subgroups. This longitudinal study found no deterioration in mental health status among Chinese new undergraduate students after three months of mass quarantine for COVID-19.

Abstract
The associations between socioeconomic status and childhood overweight/obesity are inconsistent, and potential underlying factors are unclear. In China, Hukou status is an important attribute of individual's socioeconomic circumstances, but previously received less consideration as a socioeconomic indicator. This study aimed to investigate the association between comprehensive socioeconomic status and childhood overweight/obesity. Using data from Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Management Information System (2009-2018, N = 209,500), clustering analysis was used to create comprehensive socioeconomic groups with indicator components such as parental education level, occupation, and maternal Hukou. The associations between the determined socioeconomic status and childhood overweight/obesity at age 1 and 2 were examined by log-binomial model. Parallel and serial mediation analyses were performed to test the indirect effects of potential mediators, including maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, and infant birth weight, in the association between socioeconomic status and childhood overweight/obesity. Four clusters, defined as low, low-medium, medium-high, and high socioeconomic groups, were identified through clustering analysis. Hukou, among five socioeconomic components, contributed the most to the development of childhood overweight/obesity. Children in the low-medium socioeconomic group have a greater risk of overweight/obesity than the low socioeconomic group. Indirect effects of maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, and infant birth weight were identified for the association. In conclusion, socioeconomic status may impact childhood obesity through maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, and infant birth weight. Hukou should be considered in the evaluation of socioeconomic status in China.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood overweight and obesity (OWO) is a primary global health challenge. Childhood OWO prevention is now a public health priority in China. The Sino-Canadian Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (SCHeLTI), one of four trials being undertaken by the international HeLTI consortium, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted, community-family-mother-child intervention on childhood OWO and non-communicable diseases risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a multicentre, cluster-randomised, controlled trial conducted in Shanghai, China. The unit of randomisation is the service area of Maternal Child Health Units (N=36). We will recruit 4500 women/partners/families in maternity and district level hospitals. Participants in the intervention group will receive a multifaceted, integrated package of health promotion interventions beginning in preconception or in the first trimester of pregnancy, continuing into infancy and early childhood. The intervention, which is centred on a modified motivational interviewing approach, will target early-life maternal and child risk factors for adiposity. Through the development of a biological specimen bank, we will study potential mechanisms underlying the effects of the intervention. The primary outcome for the trial is childhood OWO (body mass index for age ≥85th percentile) at 5 years of age, based on WHO sex-specific standards. The study has a power of 0.8 (α=0.05) to detect a 30% risk reduction in the proportion of children with OWO at 5 years of age, from 24.4% in the control group to 17% in the intervention group. Recruitment was launched on 30 August 2018 for the pilot study and 10 January 2019 for the formal study. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study has been approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committee of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital in Shanghai, China, and the Research Ethics Board of the Centre Intégré Universitaire de Santé et Services Sociaux de l'Estrie-CHUS in Sherbrooke, Canada. Abstract
This study sought to estimate the association of children’s body mass index (BMI) with their social function in Shanghai China. A large population-based cross-sectional study based on a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was conducted. BMI was compared according to social communication questionnaire (SCQ) classification, and then SCQ score was compared in terms of BMI grouping before and after PSM. A positive SCQ was considered to indicate poor social communication and a negative SCQ was then supposed to be normal. After 1:3 matching, a total of 7563 children aged 3–12 years were included in analysis. There were statistically significant positive correlation of BMI with SCQ scores for obese females of school age (R2 = 0.043, p < 0.001) and negative correlation of these two variables for school-aged females with malnutrition (R2 = 0.047, p = 0.027). In conclusion, BMI may be characterized as one of predictive factor for poor social function of these children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of general overweight and obesity defined by body mass index criteria has greatly increased in Chinese children and adolescents in recent decades. However, few studies have considered the trend in abdominal obesity in Chinese children and adolescents. This study aimed to examine the secular trends in waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and the prevalence of abdominal obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 6-17 years from 1993 to 2015. METHODS A total of 11,985 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey, a continuous cross-sectional survey, conducted from 1993 to 2015. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC≥age- and sex-specific 90th percentile based on the reference from Chinese children and adolescents or WHtR≥0.50. RESULTS After adjustment for age, sex and region, mean WC increased from 60.27 cm in 1993 to 64.31 cm in 2015 (p for trend <0.001), and mean WHtR increased from 0.430 to 0.434 (p for trend <0.05). The prevalence of abdominal obesity defined by WC reference increased from 5.0% in 1993 to 19.3% in 2015 and defined by WHtR reference increased from 6.4% in 1993 to 14.5% in 2015 (p for trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of abdominal obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 6-17 years has increased between 1993 and 2015.

Abstract
PURPOSE Childhood obesity is a global epidemic and a chronic disease. Multifactorial determinants have long been linked with childhood obesity. These have been challenged with the onset of COVID-19 and the associated mitigation measures. The study aimed to re-highlight these determinants while exploring the effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on these pre-existing childhood obesity determinants, while providing evidence that may be beneficial for the post-COVID-19 recovery plan. METHODS A PubMed literature search (2016-2021) using the keywords, "childhood obesity", "gender", "sex", "obesity in youth", "obesity in adolescents", "COVID-19″ and "SARS-CoV2" was performed. RESULTS Genetic predisposition, biologically low leptin levels, certain cultural beliefs and socio-economic statuses, as well as exposure to an "obesogenic" environment were found to have a positive association with childhood obesity. Additionally, the onset of COVID-19 further aggravates the childhood obesity epidemic, increasing childrens' susceptibility to obesity and all associated consequential diseases. DISCUSSION A possible key to the control and prevention of the burden of childhood obesity, lies in dealing with its precursors and risk factors. Certain factors, including socio-cultural norms, cultural beliefs and geographical factors are amenable. COVID-19 further challenged these and it is evident that the childhood obesity epidemic is still a critical one. Encouraging preventative interventions, such as screening programs, public awareness and policies targeting the environment, amongst others, are recommended.
