Abstract
This study describes the development of 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole modified-amide/imide co-polymers for the extraction/pre-concentration of trace As(III), from edible vegetable oils. Their characterization was realized by help of instrumental techniques. The method is based on pH-dependent complexation between As(III) and co-polymeric chelators in presence of 35-fold excess As(V), their selective extraction into the mixed micellar phase, and detected at pH 2.0 and 6.0 by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The variables affecting extraction efficiency were optimized. From pre-concentration of 20-mL sample, the good linear relationships were obtained in range of 1-40 and 3-75 µg/L with DLs of 0.32 and 1.00 µg/L. The accuracy was verified by analysis of a certified sample without and with spiking. The method was applied into the analysis of iAs levels of samples. The results show that the functional co-polymers are efficient chelators, and exhibit great potential for the selective extraction of As(III) from edible vegetable oils.

Abstract
The increasing demand for plastic in our daily lives has led to global plastic pollution. The improper disposal of plastic has resulted in a massive amount of atmospheric microplastics (MPs), which has further resulted in the production of atmospheric nanoplastics (NPs). Because of its intimate relationship with the environment and human health, microplastic and nanoplastic contamination is becoming a problem. Because microplastics and nanoplastics are microscopic and light, they may penetrate deep into the human lungs. Despite several studies demonstrating the abundance of microplastics and nanoplastics in the air, the potential risks of atmospheric microplastics and nanoplastics remain unknown. Because of its small size, atmospheric nanoplastic characterization has presented significant challenges. This paper describes sampling and characterization procedures for atmospheric microplastics and nanoplastics. This study also examines the numerous harmful effects of plastic particles on human health and other species. There is a significant void in research on the toxicity of airborne microplastics and nanoplastics upon inhalation, which has significant toxicological potential in the future. Further study is needed to determine the influence of microplastic and nanoplastic on pulmonary diseases.

Abstract
Modern agriculture uses pesticides to improve the quality and quantity of crops. However, pesticide residues can remain on agricultural products, posing very serious risks to human health and life. It is recommended to wash fruits and vegetables before consumption. To assess the removal efficacy of pesticide residue, a sensitive and reliable method based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was developed and optimized for the simultaneous determination of four pesticide residues (acetamiprid, boscalid, pyraclostrobin, and pendimethalin). Isotope-labeled standards were used to validate the method in terms of recovery, linearity, matrix effects, precision, and sensitivity. The mean recovery values for both low-quality control (LQC) and high-quality control (HQC) transitions were in the range of 89–105%, and the intra-day precision was less than 13.7%. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.003 mg/kg and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The proposed method is suitable for evaluating the quality of detergents for removing pesticide residues from fruit surfaces.

Abstract
This study sought to evaluate the possibility of using grape pomace, a waste material from wine production, for the preparation of cosmetic components. Following the existing clear research trend related to improving the safety of cleansing cosmetics, an attempt was made to determine the possibility of preparing model shower gels based on grape pomace extract. A new method for producing cosmetic components named loan chemical extraction (LCE) was developed and is described for the first time in this paper. In the LCE method, an extraction medium consisting only of the components from the final product was used. Thus, there were no additional substances in the cosmetics developed, and the formulation was significantly enriched with compounds isolated from grape pomace. Samples of the model shower gels produced were evaluated in terms of their basic parameters related to functionality (e.g., foaming properties, rheological characteristics, color) and their effect on the skin. The results obtained showed that the extracts based on waste grape pomace contained a number of valuable cosmetic compounds (e.g., organic acids, phenolic compounds, amino acids and sugars), and the model products basis on them provided colorful and safe natural cosmetics.

Abstract
Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), as a novel non-thermal processing technology, has recently shown unique effects on the properties of various liquid foods. The extreme conditions of pressure at ~500 bar, local hotspots with ~5,000 K, and oxidation created by HC can help obtain characteristic products with high quality and special taste. Moreover, compared with other emerging non-thermal approaches, the feature of the HC phenomenon and its generation mechanism helps determine that HC is more suitable for industrial-scale processing. This mini-review summarizes the current knowledge of the recent advances in HC-based liquid food processing. The principle of HC is briefly introduced. The effectiveness of HC on the various physical (e.g., particle size, viscosity, temperature, and stability), chemical (nutrition loss), and biological characteristics (microorganism inactivation) of various liquid foods are evaluated. Finally, several recommendations for future research on the HC technique are provided.

Abstract
Sample preparation is considered as the bottleneck step in bioanalysis because each biological matrix has its own unique challenges and complexity. Competent sample preparation to extract the desired analytes and remove redundant components is a crucial step in each bioanalytical approach. The matrix effect is a key hurdle in bioanalytical sample preparation, which has gained extensive consideration. Novel sample preparation techniques have advantages over classical techniques in terms of accuracy, automation, ease of sample preparation, storage, and shipment and have become increasingly popular over the past decade. Our objective is to provide a broad outline of current developments in various bioanalytical sample preparation techniques in chromatographic and spectroscopic examinations. In addition, how these techniques have gained considerable attention over the past decade in bioanalytical research is mentioned with preferred examples. Modern trends in bioanalytical sample preparation techniques, including sorbent-based microextraction techniques, are primarily emphasized. Bioanalytical sampling techniques are described with suitable applications in pharmaceuticals. The pros and cons of each bioanalytical sampling techniques are described. Relevant biological matrices are outlined.

Abstract
Using waste materials to extract biologically active ingredients with green solvents is a new trend for sustainable development. Herein, different types of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and surfactant solvents (SSs) were used to extract curcumin from turmeric residues (TRs), among which choline chloride-propylene glycol (ChCl-Pro) showed the highest yield. The optimized extraction conditions included a ChCl : Pro ratio of 1 : 2, water content in the DESs of 20%, solid : liquid ratio of 1 : 40 maintained for 60 min at 50 °C, and a TR particle size of 0.18 mm. The extraction yield was 54.2 mg g-1, which was 1.31 times higher than when methanol was used as a solvent. Distilled water was used to recover curcumin from the DES extract with a recovery yield of 99.7%. Furthermore, the antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities of the recovered curcumin were evaluated, with IC50 values of 25.58 ± 0.51 and 19.12 ± 0.83 μg mL-1, respectively. This study highlights the promising potential of using green solvents to extract bioactive compounds from waste materials.

Abstract
This work describes the optimization of a methodology for the reduction of silver ions from silver nanoparticle suspensions obtained from low-yield laboratory procedures. The laboratory synthesis of silver nanoparticles following a bottom-up approach starting from silver nitrate, originates silver ions that were not reduced to their fundamental state for nanoparticles creation at the end of the process. However, it is well known that silver ions can easily influence chemical assays due to their chemical reactivity properties and can limit biological assays since they interfere with several biological processes, namely intracellular ones, leading to the death of living cells or organisms. As such, the presence of silver ions is highly undesirable when conducting biological assays to evaluate the influence of silver nanoparticles. We report the development of an easy, low-cost, and rapid methodology that is based on cation exchange resins to minimize the silver ion content in a raw suspension of silver nanoparticles while preserving the integrity of the nanomaterials. This procedure preserves the physical-chemical properties of the nanoparticles, thus allowing the purified nanoparticulate systems to be biologically tested. Different types of cationic resins were tested, and the developed methodology was optimized by changing several parameters. A reduction from 92% to 10% of free silver/total silver ratio was achieved when using the Bio-Rad 50W-X8 100–200 mesh resin and a contact time of 15 min. Filtration by vacuum was used to separate the used resin from the nanoparticles suspension, allowing it to be further reused, as well as the purified AgNPs suspension.

Abstract
Microcystin, a cyanotoxin produced by Microcystis aeruginosa growing in eutrophic waters, can promote liver tumors in people ingesting contaminated water. To date, water treatment systems have not been effective in removing or degrading these cyanotoxins. In this work, we investigated the inhibitory activity of surfactants on the growth of M. aeruginosa and their application to extract the intracellular produced cyanotoxins. The experiments involving growth inhibition and extraction of cyanotoxins were carried out using the non-biodegradable surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in addition to other biodegradable surfactants. These were Tween 80 and surfactants derived from amino acids and peptides, respectively, from arginine, SDA, and hydrolyzed peptone, SDP. We demonstrated that the tested surfactants could be used to inhibit the growth of M. aeruginosa. At this point, CTAB and SDA proved to be the most competent surfactants in reducing cyanobacterial growth. Moreover, microcystins have been successfully removed from the water employing a cloud point extraction protocol based on the use of these surfactants and ammonium sulfate.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Organic molecules that interact with the cannabinoid receptors are called cannabinoids, which can be endogenous, natural or synthetic compounds. They possess similar pharmacological properties as produced by the plant, Cannabis sativa L. Before cannabinoids can be analysed, they need to be extracted from the matrices. OBJECTIVE To review literature on the methods and protocols for the extraction of naturally occurring cannabinoids. METHODOLOGY An extensive literature search was performed incorporating several databases, notably, Web of Knowledge, PubMed and Google Scholar, and other relevant published materials. The keywords used in the search, in various combinations, with cannabinoids and extraction being present in all combinations, were Cannabis, hemp, cannabinoids, Cannabis sativa, marijuana, and extraction. RESULTS In addition to classical maceration with organic solvents, e.g. ethanol, pressurised solvent extraction, solvent heat reflux, Soxhlet extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction and microwave-assisted extraction, are routinely used nowadays for the extraction of cannabinoids from plant materials and cannabis consumer products. For the extraction of cannabinoids from biological samples, e.g. human blood, and also from food and beverages, and wastewater, solid-phase extraction and its variants, as well as liquid-liquid extraction are commonly used. Parameters for extraction can be optimised by response surface methodology or other mathematical modelling tools. There are at least six US patents on extraction of cannabinoids available to date. CONCLUSIONS Irrespective of the extraction method, extraction temperature, extraction time and extraction pressure play a vital role in overall yield of extraction. Solvent polarity can also be an important factor in some extraction methods.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Because of increasing amounts of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in processed foods and the complexity of the matrix, monitoring of trace 5-HMF requires accurate and reliable methods. Hence, an efficient sample pretreatment procedure is necessary for extraction and preconcentration of 5-HMF from the matrix.
Objective
In this study, a new and efficient sample preparation method utilizing ultrasound-assisted-cloud point extraction (UA-CPE), indirectly followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), was introduced for the monitoring of trace amounts of 5-HMF in honey and jam samples.
Method
With this method, hydroxylamine was used as a derivatizing agent in the presence of Mn(II) and an anionic surfactant, SDS for extraction of 5-HMF at pH 9.0. For dispersing reagents in sample solution, low amounts of mixed surfactant, triton X-45 and SDS were mixed and fast-injected into the extraction media. A cloudy solution formed, and after reaction of 5-HMF with reagents, the cloudy solution was centrifuged. The extracted 5-HMF in the surfactant-rich phase was dissolved in acidic acetone and indirectly analyzed by FAAS.
Results
The method showed a detection limit of 1.27 μg/L in linear working range of 4–240 μg/L, good precision (2.3–6.5%), and recovery rates (93.5–97%) after preconcentration of 70-fold.
Conclusions
Within this study, an accurate and reliable method for the indirect quantification of 5-HMF in selected samples was successfully developed with a sensitivity improvement factor of 30.6.
Highlights
The figures of merit for the developed indirect method were appropriate. The applicability of the method for the analysis of 5-HMF in processed foods was excellent.

Abstract
We have measured the self-diffusion coefficients and calculated the effective hydrodynamic radii of micelles of ethoxylated isononylphenols in aqueous solutions in the presence of sodium chloride, as well as in their binary mutual mixtures, when approaching cloudy conditions. These cloudy conditions were created by an increase in temperature, a change in the concentration of an electrolyte in the solution, or a mutual ratio of neonols in their binary mixtures. The results are discussed within the concept of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are considered one of the most dangerous agricultural and food contaminants. They are toxic and the development of rapid and sensitive analytical methods to detect and quantify them is a very important issue in the context of food safety and animal/human health. The need to detect mycotoxins at trace levels and to simultaneously analyze many different mycotoxin types became mandatory to protect public health. In fact, European Commission regulations specified both their limits in foodstuffs and official sample preparation protocols in addition to analytical methods to verify their presence. Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) includes different separation modes, allowing many versatile applications in food analysis and safety. In the context of mycotoxins, recent advances to improve CE sensitivity, particularly pre-concentration techniques or miniaturized systems, deserve remarkable attention, as they provide an interesting approach in the analysis of such contaminants in complex food matrices. This review summarizes the applications of CE combined with different pre-concentration approaches, which have been proposed in the literature (mainly) in the last ten years. A section is also dedicated to recent microchip–CE devices since they represent the most promising CE mode for this application.
