Abstract
Health literacy is a public health issue. Unpaid caregivers of older people with low health literacy may have difficulties providing care, exerting a negative impact on the care process. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the literature on factors associated with low health literacy in unpaid caregivers of older people. Searches for relevant articles were conducted in the Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, PubMed and Web of Science databases. A total of 1440 articles were identified, nine of which met the eligibility criteria and were included in the systematic review, which was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024522986). A total of 2209 unpaid caregivers participated in the studies selected for this review. Most were women (67.2%). The average frequency of inadequate health literacy was 27.1%. Sociodemographic characteristics (i.e. advanced age, low educational level, the female sex), factors related to the care process (i.e. low acculturation, low empowerment, poor ability to read medication package inserts, lower care capacity, greater disease severity, hospitalization of care recipients), cognitive factors and factors related to quality of life/well-being (i.e. less social support, poorer quality of life, greater cognitive impairment, higher levels of burden) were associated with low health literacy. In conclusion, low health literacy in unpaid caregivers of older people is associated with sociodemographic, care-related and cognitive factors as well as factors related to quality of life/well-being. Low health literacy may exert a negative impact on the health of caregivers and, consequently, the quality of care provided to older people.

Abstract
This review was designed to (1) determine the extent to which the clinical science on sport-related concussion treatment and rehabilitation has considered social determinants of health (SDoH) or health equity and (2) offer recommendations to enhance the incorporation of SDoH and health equity in concussion treatment research and clinical care. The Concussion in Sport Group consensus statement (2023) was informed by two systematic reviews examining prescribed rest or exercise following concussion and targeted interventions to facilitate concussion recovery. We examined 31 studies, including 2,698 participants, from those two reviews. Race (k = 6; 19.4%) and ethnicity (k = 4; 12.9%) of the study samples were usually not reported. Four studies examined ethnicity (i.e., Hispanic), exclusively as a demographic category. Five studies (16.1%) examined race as a demographic category. Three studies (9.7%) examined socioeconomic status (SES; measured as household income) as a demographic category/sample descriptor and one study (3.2%) examined SES in-depth, by testing whether the treatment and control groups differed by SES. Five studies examined an SDoH domain in a descriptive manner and four studies in an inferential/intentional manner. No study mentioned SDoH, health equity, or disparities by name. Many studies (61.3%) excluded participants based on demographic, sociocultural, or health factors, primarily due to language proficiency. The new consensus statement includes recommendations for concussion treatment and rehabilitation that rely on an evidence base that has not included SDoH or studies addressing health equity. Researchers are encouraged to design treatment and rehabilitation studies that focus specifically on underrepresented groups to determine if they have specific and unique treatment and rehabilitation needs, whether certain practical modifications to treatment protocols might be necessary, and whether completion rates and treatment adherence and response are similar.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the fast-growing migration and globalisation trends in the last decades, women increasingly experienced pregnancy as migrants and often faced complex and unique challenges related to both migration and pregnancy in a foreign land, affecting their psychological wellbeing during pregnancy. Cultural conflicts between pregnant migrants' home and host cultures could play a critical role affecting their pregnancy experiences and psychological wellbeing. AIMS This study aimed to explore cultural conflicts that challenge Chinese first-time expectant mothers living in Australia regarding their pregnancy self-care and their psychological wellbeing. METHOD A qualitative methodology was adopted utilising interpretative phenomenological analysis. Participants were 18 Chinese-born first-time pregnant migrants in Australia. A semi-structured interview schedule focused on their pregnancy self-care and psychological wellbeing and any effects of Chinese-Western/Australian cultural conflicts. FINDINGS Two psychosocial approaches were identified to explain how all the participants were psychologically challenged by self-care cultural conflicts to some extent: 1) challenging decision-making processes about self-care cultural conflicts and 2) interpersonal tension if the decisions conflicted with someone's advice/beliefs/opinions. CONCLUSION Emotional, cognitive, and social factors were relevant in shaping the participants' engagement with and their experiences of various pregnancy self-care activities.

Abstract
Pain recognition for culturally diverse people is complex as pain experience is subjective and influenced by cultural background. We compared the prevalence, intensity, and association of pain with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) between immigrants and non-immigrants living with dementia in residential aged care homes (RACHs) who were referred to two Dementia Support Australia programs. Immigrant status was defined by the documented country of birth. Pain and NPS were assessed using PainChek® and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, respectively. Subgroup analyses were also completed for English-speaking and non-English-speaking immigrants. A total of 17,637 referrals [immigrants, n = 6340; non-immigrants, n = 11,297] from 2792 RACHs were included. There were no significant differences for the prevalence of pain across all groups. Immigrants were slightly more likely to have moderate pain or severe pain than non-immigrants. Non-English-speaking immigrants had 0.5 points higher total pain scores on average (Cohen's d = 0.10 [0.05, 0.15], p < 0.001) than non-immigrants. Total pain score had a significant effect on total NPS severity scores in all groups. While pain prevalence is similar across groups, higher pain intensities are more common among immigrants living with dementia. Increased care staff awareness, education, and training about the potential effect of culture on pain expression is needed.

Abstract
Health literacy is associated with health behaviors and outcomes. Using Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, this study examined the role of limited English proficiency (LEP) and social support for the health literacy of Korean American immigrant women, one of the most affected groups by LEP. Researchers surveyed 232 Korean American immigrant women in a metro area in a Southeastern state, U.S. Health literacy was measured by the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Questionnaire and the California Health Interview Survey. Participants with better English proficiency and larger social support had higher health literacy. LEP and social support interaction was significantly associated with health literacy, illustrating social support as a buffer that mitigates the negative impact of LEP on health literacy. Community programs that enhance social support through community health advocates or peer educators may increase health literacy and reduce health disparities among Korean American immigrant women with LEP.

Abstract
Health literacy is understudied in the US-Affiliated Pacific (USAP), where local populations have historically experienced social marginalization and disproportionate health inequities caused by the social determinants of health (SDOH). This cross-sectional study analyzed several SDOH indicators-acculturation, use of food assistance programs and demographic characteristics (race and ethnicity, household income, primary language spoken at home and educational attainment)-and their relationship to health literacy among 1305 parents/caregivers of young children ages 2-8 years old who participated in the Children's Healthy Living (CHL) program in Alaska, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and Hawai'i. Significantly increased odds of low health literacy were found among parents/caregivers with households where a language other than English was the primary language compared to English-only households (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.22, 2.82), household income of <$35 000 compared to ≥$35 000 (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.13, 4.07), parents/caregivers of Asian children compared to parents/caregivers of White children (OR = 2.68, 95% CI = 1.05, 6.84), parent/caregivers with less than or some high school education compared to high school completion (1st- to 8th-grade OR = 4.46, 95% CI = 2.09, 9.52; 9th- to 11th-grade OR 1.87, 95% CI = 1.06, 3.30) and parent/caregivers with acculturation status defined as marginalized as compared to integrated (OR = 2.31, 95% CI = 1.09, 4.86). This study indicates that some USAP parents/caregivers may lack the capacity to acquire health information, utilize health resources, and navigate health decision making. Future efforts to understand and improve health literacy in the USAP should be population specific, thoroughly assess personal and organizational health literacy, and inventory community health care capacity.

Abstract
Limited English proficiency (LEP) is one of the most influencing factors of personal health literacy (PHL) in the older immigrant population. Over the years, the proportion of older Korean immigrants with LEP has not improved and it is still noted as a major barrier to PHL. Therefore, organizational approaches are needed to enhance the PHL of older immigrants with LEP. This study aims to find the mediating effect of social support and acculturation between LEP and PHL by conceptualizing social support and acculturation as an organizational health literacy strategy. Data from 244 older Korean immigrants living in the states of Alabama and Georgia, USA, were used to conduct the study. Korean version of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), East Asian Acculturation Measure (EAAM), and Health Literacy Survey-12 Questionnaires (HLS-Q12) were used to measure the variables. The path analysis was conducted to find the serial mediation effects of social support and acculturation. The results showed that 77.5% of the participants reported not having fluent English proficiency. English proficiency (β =- 0.21, p = 0.007), social support (β = 0.17, p = 0.004), and acculturation (β = 0.18, p = 0.011) significantly predicted the PHL, and social support (β = 0.04, p = 0.028) and acculturation (β = 0.14, p < 0.001) mediated the relationship between LEP and PHL. Discussion: Health-related organizations and communities are encouraged to provide external social support and acculturation opportunities to enhance PHL in older Korean immigrants with LEP.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted public health and quality of life, leading to government recommendations for vaccination. Using cross-sectional data from a nationwide population-based survey conducted in China (N = 6860), this study aimed to examine the associations between individual vaccine uptake and general trust in others, trust in government, and interaction with neighbors. We conducted a multilevel logistic regression analysis to examine the relevance of these factors at the individual and community levels. Among young adults, higher levels of general trust at both levels were positively associated with vaccination, with odds ratios (OR) of 1.35 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07, 1.70) and 1.58 (95% CI: 1.14, 2.18), respectively. We also found a positive association between vaccination and community-level interaction with neighbors, with ORs of 1.55 (95% CI: 1.11, 2.17). In contrast, among older individuals, vaccination was positively associated only with individual-level interaction with neighbors, with an OR of 1.55 (95% CI: 1.15, 2.08). The results indicated that vaccine uptake was associated with an individual's views of society and the social environment of the community, with substantial variations between the young and the old. Our findings emphasize the significance of public health measures to strengthen neighborhood interactions among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women have unique health concerns in the context of chronic illness. Although health literacy has been linked to health-related quality of life, the pathway by which some factors mediate this relationship has not been well examined among Saudi women with chronic disease. PURPOSE This study was designed to examine the relationship between health literacy and health-related quality of life and determine the mediating roles of healthy lifestyle and patient-centered care in explaining this relationship. METHODS A cross-sectional study was used. A random sample of 20 primary healthcare centers in Saudi Arabia was selected. A convenience sample of 300 women diagnosed with a chronic illness was recruited from these centers. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships. RESULTS Controlling for women's age and education, the hypothesized model adequately fit the data. Health literacy and its dimensions were found to positively and directly affect both patient-centered care (β = 0.614, B = 0.189, p < .001) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (β = 0.550, B = 1.211, p < .001). Furthermore, both patient-centered care (β = 0.390, B = 1.301, p < .001) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (β = 0.322, B = 0.150, p < .001) were found to positively and directly affect health-related quality of life, whereas health literacy had significant, direct (β = 0.285, B = 0.292, p < .001) and indirect (β = 0.417, B = 0.428, p < .001) effects on health-related quality of life through patient-centered care and healthy lifestyle behaviors. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Special consideration should be given to health literacy, patient-centered care, and healthy lifestyle behaviors to enhance health-related quality of life in women with chronic illness. Gender-specific health services and interventions are needed to improve women's health literacy.

Abstract
Health literacy has been identified as a significant predictor of healthcare utilization among refugee and immigrant communities. Considering its potential impact on their health outcomes, accurately measuring levels of health literacy among limited English proficiency (LEP) populations is an important area of investigation. This study examined the psychometric properties of a modified version of the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS), based on Nutbeam's model of health literacy, using an exploratory factor (EFA) and confirmatory factor (CFA) analysis among a sample of Karen refugees, an ethnic minority group from Burma. Results of the EFA confirmed a 3-factor model in our sample. CFA results indicated good model fits, demonstrating a promising use of the AAHLS in assessing health literacy among Karen refugees. The findings of this study support the validity of using this measure among this population and suggest some necessary adjustments to incorporate factors unique to the refugee experience that may affect the interpretation and application of items in the AAHLS. Further replication using other LEP samples is necessary to confirm the psychometric properties of the AAHLS and its ability to assess health literacy using Nutbeam's theoretical model of health literacy.

Abstract
Diet, screen time, physical activity, and sleep combine into lifestyle patterns with synergistic effects on health. This study aimed to identify lifestyle patterns in children without housing and assess their associations with physical and mental health and family socio-ecological factors. In the 2013 ENFAMS cross-sectional survey (children aged 6-12 experiencing homelessness, Greater Paris area, n = 235), parents reported socio-ecological factors, children's behaviours, and mental health (the latter was also child-reported). Nurses measured children's haemoglobin concentrations and body mass index. Principal component analysis was used to derive sex-specific lifestyle patterns. Hierarchical linear regressions and "outcome-wide" analyses assessed, respectively, these patterns' relations to health and family socio-ecological factors. A rather healthy lifestyle pattern-similarly characterized by diverse diet and high sleep time-was identified, with slight differences by sex. Scores for this pattern were higher for children in food-secure or higher-income households, whose parents were proficient in French, who slept longer, or who received more social support compared to their counterparts, with some nuances by sex. Higher scores for this pattern were associated with higher prosocial behaviour scores (girls) and lower anxiety and hyperactivity-inattention symptoms scores (boys), but not with physical health. For this underserved and understudied population, the results highlight the importance of family socio-ecological factors in shaping the lifestyles and mental health of children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To better understand the hearing health learning needs of Hispanic/Latino adults by assessing hearing healthcare (HHC) knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to inform the development of a culturally and linguistically appropriate self-management program. Through a series of focus groups with members of the target audience, this study explored knowledge about hearing loss and interventions, cultural facilitators and barriers to HHC utilization, and preferences for hearing health education and information delivery. Opinions were also received on patient education materials designed to increase self-efficacy for managing hearing loss in daily life. DESIGN This work was guided by a practical framework of culturally competent interventions for addressing disparities in health and healthcare, centered on structural, clinical, and organizational barriers to care. A hybrid individualistic social psychology and social constructionist approach was used to build programmatic theory related to the primary research objective. Focus group goals were to generate a combination of personal opinions and collective experiences from participants with an a priori plan to analyze data using combined content analysis/grounded theory methods. Purposive sampling was used to select 31 participants who were Spanish-speaking, identified as Hispanic/Latino, and who had normal hearing or self-reported hearing difficulties. Thirteen focus groups were conducted using Microsoft Teams, and each group was audio and video recorded for later off-line transcription, translation, and analysis. A constant comparison approach was used to systematically organize focus group data into a structured format for interpretation. Transcripts were coded independently by two investigators, and emergent themes were derived and interpreted from the coded data. RESULTS Major and minor themes tied to the framework for culturally competent interventions included those related to sociocultural barriers to care. Structural barriers, including inconsistent access to quality care, lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education materials, appointment wait times and intake processes, and referrals to specialty care, were most frequently experienced by participants. Clinical barriers most frequently cited were a lack of culturally and linguistically congruent healthcare providers and lack of language access during healthcare visits. Other major themes included hearing loss lived experiences, family and familism, and hearing-related patient education needs and preferences. CONCLUSIONS Focus group results were integrated into a Spanish-language hearing loss self-management program that is currently being evaluated in a randomized controlled trial. The themes uncovered provided insight regarding the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about hearing loss and HHC, including hearing-related learning needs, of Hispanic/Latino adults in this sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study assessed health literacy (HL) and its associated factors among older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS This cross-sectional study included older adults in urban communities in Thailand. We randomly selected a total of 421 older adults and performed multiple logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The average age of the respondents was 70.0±7.1 years. Most respondents were female, married, had a low education level (primary school or lower), were unemployed, and had sufficient income. We observed nonproficient and proficient HL levels in 56.1% and 43.9% of respondents, respectively. The factors influencing HL included attending healthcare services at a tertiary hospital, good accessibility to COVID-19 prevention materials and health information, and provision of a high level of social support from neighbors and health personnel. CONCLUSION The results of our study provide important information on the outcome of accessibility and social support among older adults in an urban community during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, access to health services, prevention equipment, and information was important for people at risk of HL and helped promote good behaviors.
