Abstract
The aim of the first experiment was to determine if follicular growth rate in ewes increases spontaneously or after gonadotropin administration after lamb weaning during the period of seasonal anestrus. To conduct this experiment, there were postpartum lactating ewes from which lambs were or were not weaned when 68 to 72 days old (Day 0). The ovaries were assessed using ultrasonography from Day 0 to 9, followed by the administration of 200 IU of eCG on Day 7 to all ewes to determine capacity of follicles to respond to gonadotropin stimulation. There were no differences in duration of follicular wave dynamics, or maximum dominant follicle diameter during the first follicular wave after lamb weaning or after administration of eCG. Because weaning did not have positive effects on follicular development, the aim of the second study was to compare responses to placement of rams with lactating ewes (47 or 68 days postpartum; PP47 and PP68, respectively) and seasonal anestrous ewes that lambed during the previous year (Control). There were no differences in the proportion of ewes of the three groups that developed a corpus luteum after placement with rams, but more ewes of the Control than PP47 and PP68 groups expressed behavioral estrus and lambed as a result of placement of ewes with rams (P < 0.0001). In extensive grazing management systems, weaning of lambs did not modify spontaneous or induced follicular growth in Corriedale ewes that lambed in the spring. The placement of rams with ewes resulted in induction of ovulations, estrus and pregnancies even when ewes have lambs suckling.

Abstract
Avaliou-se o efeito da adição de bagaço de caju desidratado (BCD), durante o pós-parto, em 41 ovelhas, alojadas com suas crias em baias, onde recebiam, à vontade, 75% de capim-elefante + 25% de concentrado (DI; n=17), ou 50% de BCD + 25% de capim-elefante + 25% de concentrado (DII; n=24). Cinquenta dias pós-parto, o estro foi sincronizado, e as ovelhas submetidas à monta natural. O grupo DI perdeu mais peso (P<0,05), e o consumo de proteína bruta e de fibra em detergente neutro foi maior nesse grupo (P<0,001). A inclusão de BCD na dieta II induziu ao aumento do consumo de matéria seca, extrato etéreo e fibra em detergente ácido (P<0,001) e redução significativa das concentrações de colesterol, lipídios totais, albumina e proteína total (P<0,001). Não houve diferença entre os grupos (P>0,05) no tempo de retorno do primeiro corpo lúteo funcional, na resposta à sincronização do estro e nas taxas de gestação e prolificidade. A inclusão de 50% de BCD amenizou as perdas de peso, foi bem consumida e não influenciou nas respostas reprodutivas após a sincronização do estro.

Abstract
AbstractThe objective was to determine the effect of age and dietary protein content on post-partum oestrous and ovarian cyclicity in autumn-lambing ewes. Twenty-four multiparous (age 4·5 (s.e. 0·61) years) and 24 primiparous (age 1·5 years) ewes which lambed on 28 October (s.e. 0·2) and were rearing 2·0 and. 1·7 (s.e. 0·13) lambs, respectively, were equally allocated to two dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Diets comprised a d libitum hay supplemented with concentrate (12·5 MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter (DM) and either 210 or 140 g crude protein per kg DM), offered at a daily allowance of 1·2 kg per ewe from lambing to weaning (18 December) and 0·4 kg per ewe thereafter. Throughout the study (3 November to 24 May) ewes were group-housed in straw-bedded pens under natural photoperiod at 57°N and their live weights and body condition scores were assessed at 2-week intervals. A raddled vasectomized ram was continually present with each group and ewes marked by the ram were recorded thrice weekly. Blood samples were obtained thrice weekly for measurement of peripheral progesterone concentrations and ovulation rate was determined by laparoscopy during January and March. There was no significant effect of dietary protein content on any of the variables measured. For multiparous and primiparous ewes, mean live weights and body condition scores at lambing were 79·5 (s.e. 1·41) v. 58·4 (s.e. 1·54) kg (P < 0·001) and 2·5 (s.e. 0·05) v. 2·2 (s.e. 0·05) (P < 0·001) and daily live-weight losses over the suckling period were 153 (s.e. 19·3) v. 85 (s.e. 21·1) glday (P < 0·05). Intervals from parturition to first overt oestrus were 39 (s.e. 3·2) v. 33 (s.e. 2·3) days and to the onset of ovarian cyclicity were 29 (s.e. 4·9) v. 25 (s.e. 1·5) days. Durations of ovarian cyclicity were 133 (s.e. 27·1) and 110 (s.e. 5·7) days (P < 0·01) during which 7·6 (s.e. 0·32) and 6·5 (s.e. 0·34) (P < 0·05) ovarian cycles were recorded respectively. Fifteen ewes had initial short cycles (≤10 days), six had prolonged cycles (≥21 days) and 11 had extended inter-luteal phase intervals (≥8 days). All ewes had recent ovulations at the January laparoscopy but only 19 multiparous and nine primiparous ewes had ovulations in March. Mean ovulation rates were: January 2·2 (s.e. 0·14) and 1·4 (s.e. 0·13) (P < 0·001), and March 1·6 (s.e. 0·23) and 1·2 (s.e. 0·15) for multiparous and primiparous ewes, respectively. It is concluded that, for ewes lambing at their normal time of mating, (i) the strong seasonal drive for reproduction results in the resumption of oestrous and ovarian cyclicity during the early post-partum period; (ii) initial luteal phases may be of short or extended duration; (Hi) there is no effect of age or dietary protein content, within the range studied, on the onset of ovarian cyclicity; and (iv) multiparous ewes experience a greater number of ovarian cycles and achieve higher ovulation rates than primiparous ewes.

Abstract
The current study characterized the timing of emergence of ovulatory follicles during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle in polyovulatory does and assessed whether selection may influence ovulation rate through differences in ovarian follicular dynamics, by characterizing preovulatory follicular emergence and growth in two ecotypes of Neuquen-Criollo Argentinean goats (Short-Hair, n=11 and Long-Hair, n=9). During the breeding season, the time of estrus was synchronized in all does with two doses of a prostaglandin analogue. Ovarian laparoscopies were performed on days 17 and 19 after the induced estrus (day 0) and 7-15 h after the beginning of the subsequent estrus. Results indicate that both ecotypes of goats have common features in the ovarian follicular population and in the patterns of preovulatory follicular enlargement. In all the goats, most of the preovulatory follicles arose from the pool of follicles present in the ovary between days 17 and 19 of the estrous cycle. These follicles were all larger than 2mm at emergence, being the largest growing follicle present in the ovaries on days 17 and 19 in 56.5 and 78.6% of the does, respectively. The appearance of new follicles remained unaffected, while the mean number of small growing follicles decreased (P<0.05) during the follicular phase, indicating that preovulatory follicles do not suppress the emergence of new follicles but inhibit the growth of small follicles. A separate analysis of single and double ovulating does showed that 75% of the second ovulatory follicles in polyovulatory goats was present on the ovarian surface between days 17 and 19 of the estrous cycle, but appeared later in the other 25% of the estrous cycles. These findings support the hypothesis that follicular dominance effects are exerted during the preovulatory period, when the growth of follicles other than the ovulatory is inhibited, and that increases in ovulation rate in small ruminants are related to a reduced incidence of follicular atresia and an extended period of ovulatory follicle recruitment.

Abstract
Cell responsiveness to steroid hormones is related to the number and affinity of its receptors, thus factors affecting steroid expression will influence tissue sensitivity and functionality. The present review discusses the role of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in sheep female reproductive physiology. The mechanism of steroid hormone action in the target cell is introduced first; the tissue distribution, physiological functions and regulation of oestrogen receptor subtypes and progesterone receptor isoforms in ruminants are reported. The role of steroid receptors in target tissues (with emphasis on the uterus and pituitary gland) during different physiological events is addressed in an attempt to clarify oestrogen and progesterone actions in different developmental and reproductive stages: prepubertal period, oestrous cycle, pregnancy, post-partum period and seasonal anoestrus. The present review shows how the distinct reproductive stages are accompanied by dramatic changes in uterine receptor expression. The role of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in the molecular mechanism responsible for premature luteolysis that results in subnormal luteal function is discussed. Finally, the effect of nutrition on sex steroid receptor expression and the involvement on reproductive performance is reported.

Abstract
Using autumn-lambing ewes, this study investigated (i) the effects of diet on gonadotrophin secretion and responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis to exogenous GnRH during the early post-partum period; and (ii) whether ovulation prior to completion of uterine involution results in an increased incidence of aberrant ovarian cycles. Thirty-two ewes rearing 1.9+/-0.12 lambs were equally allocated to two dietary treatments at lambing (22 October +/-0.2 day). Diets comprised ad libitum hay and 1.5 kg per ewe per day of one of two concentrates (11.5 MJ ME, 195 g CP per kg) containing 300 g kg(-1) cracked maize grain (M) or 300 g kg(-1) sugar beet pellets (S). Half of the ewes on each diet (G) received 25 i.v. injections of 250 ng GnRH in 2 ml 0.9% saline at 2 h intervals from days 12-14 post-partum while remaining ewes (N) were monitored for the resumption of spontaneous ovarian cyclicity. Blood samples were obtained from all ewes throughout the study (lambing to 18 December) for measurement of circulating hormone concentrations and the uteri and ovaries of all ewes were examined via laparoscopy on day 21 post-partum. There were no effects of dietary treatment on ewe daily live weight loss, lamb daily live weight gain or the immediate post-partum increase in circulating FSH concentrations. Diet did not affect insulin concentrations or LH pulse frequency on day 12 post-partum but LH pulse amplitude was lower in ewes fed concentrate M compared to concentrate S (1.4+/-0.10 versus 1.7+/-0.12 ng ml(-1), respectively, P<0.05) and this was associated with an increased interval to the resumption of spontaneous ovarian cycles (35+/-3.1 versus 26+/-2.1 day, respectively, P<0.05). Administration of exogenous GnRH increased (P<0.05) the proportion of ewes on both diets that ovulated within 20 days of parturition and advanced the onset of ovarian cyclicity in ewes fed concentrate M by 9.5 days (significance of interaction, P<0.05). Four ewes, all of which ovulated before day 22 post-partum, had extended luteal activity while in remaining ewes, duration of the first luteal phase was inversely related to the time of first ovulation (r(2)=0.16, P<0.05). Results demonstrate that (i) the onset of ovarian cyclicity is influenced by diet and can be advanced by administration of exogenous GnRH; and (ii) ovulation during the early post-partum period is associated with an increased incidence of extended luteal activity.

Abstract
Involution of the ovine uterus after parturition was studied using real-time B-mode ultrasonography. The diameter of the uterus, the uterine lumen and the caruncles were investigated during the first 30 days post-parturition (p.p.) by transrectal and transabdominal application of the ultrasound probe. Ewes that spontaneously delivered showed a physiological regression of the uterus with a transversal diameter of 4.9 (+/- 0.86) cm on day 1 p.p. which decreased to 1.84 (+/- 0.14) cm until day 30. The course of uterine regression was established on these data and was described by the exponential equation: y = E + A * e(-b*t). 'E' means the final value on day 30 p.p. and 'A' the difference between the initial transversal diameter on day 1 p.p. minus the final value on day 30 p.p. The exponents 'b' and 't' indicate the downward gradient of the regression curve and also the factor time in days. Furthermore, we found that the uterine regression in ewes finishes approximately on day 17 p.p. The uterine involution was delayed in ewes after manual obstetrics and caesarean section, in addition the incidence for retention of foetal membranes was increased. The present study demonstrates that the ultrasonographic technique is a suitable method for the control of the uterine involution and for the diagnosis of pathological aberrations in sheep.

Abstract
We studied the relationship between progesterone (P4) concentrations early in the estrus cycle and follicular dynamics in dairy goats. We used seven untreated goats (control group) and six progesterone treated goats (P group) with a controlled internal drug release device from Days 0 to 5 (Day 0: day of ovulation). We performed daily ultrasonograph during the interovulatory interval to determine ovarian change and took daily blood samples to determine serum estradiol 17beta (E2) and P4 concentrations by RIA. We divided the control goats into 3- (n = 4) and 4-wave goats (n = 3), according to the number of follicular waves recorded during the ovulatory cycle. Mean progesterone concentrations between Days I and 5 were higher and mean estradiol concentrations between Days 3 and 5 were lower in 4-wave goats (P4: 3.8+/-0.2 ng/ml; E2: 1.6+/-0.2 pg/ml) than in 3-wave goats (P4: 2.0+/-0.5 ng/ml, P < 0.05; E2: 4.4+/-0.9 pg/ml, P < 0.05). Wave 2 emerged earlier in 4-wave (Day 4.2+/-0.3) than in 3-wave goats (Day 7.3+/-0.3, P < 0.05). Three out of six of the progesterone-treated goats had short cycles (mean 8.0+/-0.0 days) and ovulated from Wave 1. The other three goats had shorter cycles (mean 18.3+/-0.3 days) than the control group (20.0+/-0.2 days; P < 0.05), although they were within the normal range of control cycles (shortened cycles). In the three treated goats with shortened cycles (two with four waves, one with three waves), mean progesterone concentrations between Days I and 5 were higher (4.7+/-0.6 ng/ml) than in the 3-wave control goats. In these goats, Wave 2 emerged at Day 4.3+/-0.3, similar to the time observed in 4-wave goats but earlier (P < or = 0.05) than in 3-wave control goats. Overall results confirm a relationship between the progesterone levels and the follicular wave turnover during the early luteal phase in the goat. Higher progesterone concentrations may accelerate follicular turnover probably by an early decline of the negative feedback action of the largest follicle of Wave 1. This is followed by an early emergence of Wave 2.

Abstract
The effect of exogenous progesterone exposure early in the oestrous cycle on the duration of the interovulatory interval was studied in dairy goats. A controlled intravaginal drug release (CIDR-G) device was inserted for 5 days starting at day 0 (D0 group, n=6) or day 3 (D3 group, n=5) postovulation. A third group was composed of untreated control goats (control group, n=7). Daily transrectal ultrasound was carried out during the interovulatory interval to assess the ovarian dynamics. Oestrous behaviour was checked twice a day and serum progesterone levels were assayed in daily jugular blood samples. Treated goats showed two different responses. In three D0 goats and one D3 goat, progesterone concentrations fell immediately after CIDR withdrawal and this was followed by oestrus and ovulation between days 8 and 11 (short cycles). In the other three D0 goats and in four D3 goats the treatment significantly reduced the interovulatory interval (18.3+/-0.3 and 18.5+/-0.3 days, respectively) (shortened cycles) compared with the control group (20.0+/-0.2 days; P<0.05), but the intervals with progesterone concentrations over 1 ng/ml were not different (15.7+/-0.3, 15.8+/-0.7 and 16.0+/-0.5 days for D0, D3 and control goats, respectively). In all D0 goats with a short cycle response, the ovulatory follicle arose from the first follicular wave but in the D3 goat with a short cycle it arose from the second follicular wave. These results showed that premature progesterone exposure early in the ovulatory cycle of the goat affected its length inducing short or shortened cycles. The effect of progesterone could either affect luteotropic support of the corpus luteum (CL) and/or stimulate a premature release of the luteolysin.

Abstract
Cervical estrogen (E) and progesterone (P) receptors were characterized and quantified during the postpartum period in Corriedale ewes lambing in the late breeding season. Cervices and uteri were collected after ovariohysterectomy at 1 d (n = 2), 5 d (n = 4), 17 d (n = 2) or 30 d (n = 2) post partum. The estrogen and progesterone receptors were measured using binding assays with tritiated hormones, dextran charcoal separation and inverse Scatchard analysis. Similar kinetic parameters in cytosolic binding sites for both hormones were found in all cervical and uterine samples, indicating that the binding protein in both tissues is of the same nature. Receptor concentrations (fmol/mg cytosolic protein) in the cervix of early (1 to 5 d, n = 6) and late (17 to 30 d, n = 4) postpartum ewes were 348 +/- 66 vs 994 +/- 145 (P < 0.05) for E and 618 +/- 126 vs 1170 +/- 201 (P < 0.05) for P, respectively. These data suggest an increased synthesis of receptors, probably due to the presence of ovarian estrogen-active follicles. Cervical E and P receptor concentrations were similar or higher than those in the uterus (1.40 +/- 0.15, n = 10 and 1.51 +/- 0.19, n = 10; for E and P respectively), and these receptor ratios did not differ between the early and late postpartum period. The high ratio between cervical/uterine receptors suggests that the ovine cervix may be a very sensitive to steroid action. In conclusion, it was shown that restoration of steroid receptors during the postpartum period in the ovine cervix is similar to receptor dynamics in the uterus, and is probably associated with the recovery of ovarian cyclicity.

Abstract
Nineteen Corriedale ewes were treated with an im dose of a PGF2alpha during the luteal phase to synchronize estrus. After ovulation had been detected by using ultrasonography (Day 0); the ewes were randomly assigned to 2 different groups. In 11 ewes a CIDR, which had previously been used for 10 d, was inserted on the fourth day after ovulation. The ewes then received a dose of PGF2alpha on Day 5 to induce luteolysis. The CIDR remained in place until the end of the experiment (Day 9). Control ewes (n = 8) received no treatment. Blood samples were taken daily for estradiol, progesterone and FSH determinations. In the untreated ewes, 2 follicular waves were detected in all of the animals throughout the monitoring period, with a mean wave interval of 4.5 d. The total number of follicles which were > or =2 mm decreased from Day 0 to Day 4 (8.8+/-1.0 to 5.3+/-0.6; P< or =0.05) and then increased at Day 7 (7.5+/-0.9; P< or =0.05). The growth profiles of both the largest and the second largest follicles of Wave 1 showed significant divergence, while no divergence was observed in Wave 2. Serum estradiol concentrations decreased significantly from the day before to the day of ovulation and then increased again during the growing phase of the largest follicle of Wave 1. Concentrations of FSH were high on the day of emergence of both waves, but while a significant decline was observed after emergence in Wave 1, the levels remained high in Wave 2. In 8 of the 11 treated ewes, the largest follicle of Wave 1 was still present on the ninth day after ovulation (persistent follicle). In the other 3 ewes, the largest follicle of Wave 1 was already regressing on the day that the treatment was administered, and the largest follicle that was present on Day 9 originated from Wave 2 (nonpersistent follicle). In persistent follicle ewes, the largest follicle of Wave 1 prolonged its lifespan significantly, attaining the maximum diameter (Day 8.1+/-0.8) later than in untreated (Day 3.0+/-0.4) and nonpersisted follicle ewes (Day 2.0+/-0.6). The total number of follicles decreased in persistent follicle ewes between Day 0 and Day 4 (7.9+/-1.5 to 4.5+/-0.5, respectively; P< or =0.05) and remained low until the end of the experiment. Progesterone concentrations (nmol/L) between Days 6 and 9 were significantly different between untreated and persistent follicle ewes (12.8+/-1.0 vs. 9.4+/-1.0, P< or =0.02). The present study confirms that the largest follicle of Wave 1 is dominant in the ewe and that subluteal progesterone concentrations can prolong its lifespan and extend this dominance.

Abstract
Follicular recruitment and luteal response to superovulatory treatment initiated relative to the status of the first wave of the ovine estrous cycle (Wave 1) were studied. All ewes (n = 25) received an intravaginal progestagen sponge to synchronize estrous cycles, and ewes were monitored daily by transrectal ultrasonography. Multiple-dose FSH treatment (total dose = 100 mg NIH-FSH-P1) was initiated on the day of ovulation (Day 0 group) in 16 ewes. In the remaining 9 ewes, FSH treatment was started 3 d after emergence of the largest follicle of Wave 1 (Day 3 group). Ewes received PGF(2alpha) with the last 2 FSH treatments to induce luteolysis. Daily blood samples were taken to determine progesterone profiles and to evaluate the luteal response subsequent to superovulation. The ovulation rate was determined by ultrasonography and correlated with direct observation of the ovaries during laparotomy 5 to 6 d after superovulatory estrus when the uterus was flushed to collect embryos. Results confirmed that follicular recruitment was suppressed by the presence of a large, growing follicle. In the Day 0 and Day 3 groups, respectively, mean numbers (+/- SEM) of large follicles (>/= 4 mm) recruited were 6.4 +/- 0.6 and 2.7 +/- 0.7 (P < 0.01) at 48 h after the onset of treatment, and 6.7 +/- 0.5 and 5.1 +/- 0.6 (P = 0.08) at 72 h after the onset of treatment. Ovulation rates were 5.6 +/- 0.8 and 3.3 +/- 0.8 in the respective groups (P < 0.05). The number of transferable embryos was 1.8 +/- 0.5 and 0.3 +/- 0.2 in the respective groups (P < 0.05). Short luteal phases (</= 3 d) associated with low serum progesterone (maximum of </= 1.4 ng/ml) were detected after superovulation in 1 16 and 6 9 ewes in the Day 0 and Day 3 groups, respectively (P < 0.001). In conclusion, gonadotropin treatment initiated at the time of emergence of Wave 1 induced a superovulatory response in ewes. Response was influenced by the status of the follicular wave. The presence of a large growing follicle at time of superstimulatory treatment was associated with lower follicle recruitment, fewer ovulations, fewer transferable embryos, and the development of functionally subnormal corpora lutea (CL). The results demonstrate that follicle dominance is operative during the early luteal phase of the ovine estrous cycle.

Abstract
Resumption of ovarian follicle activity and uterine involution was studied in the post partum llama. Thirty-nine adult multiparous llamas were monitored by ultrasonography and analysis of urinary estrone sulfate for 30 d post partum at the La Raya Research Station in Peru. Uterine involution was measured in terms of reduction of length and diameter of both uterine horns. Correlation analysis was used to relate follicle size and concentration of estrone sulfate. Analysis of variance was used to determine rate of uterine involution relative to days post partum. The left ovary was palpated and scanned by Day 3 post partum in contrast to Day 1 post partum for the right ovary. Ovulatory size follicles, 7 mm, were present by Day 7.4 post partum (range 4 to 14 d). Follicle growth was detected as early as Day 4 post partum with follicle size being less during the first follicle wave (7.4 mm) compared to the second and third waves (9 to 10 mm). Concentrations of urinary estrone sulfate were positively related (P<0.05) to follicular size, but to a lesser degree during the first follicle wave (19.4 ng/mg Cr), than to the second wave (25.4 ng/mg Cr). Uterine involution, as measured by diameter, was different between the left (gravid) and right (nongravid) uterine horn (P<0.05) for the 17 d post partum, and was also different from that of control females for the 21 d post partum. Uterine involution was complete in 63% of females by Day 21 post partum.

Abstract
Superovulatory response to conventional treatment with eCG (1200 IU) and progestagen sponges (MAP, n = 9; FGA, n = 9; or controls without sponge, n = 6) was studied in Corriedale anestrous ewes. The follicular population just before the administration of eCG and the total ovarian response (large anovulatory follicles plus normal CL and prematurely regressing CL) to treatment were determined after laparotomy. Pretreatment with progestagen did not modify the number or class of follicles greater than 1 mm observed on the ovarian surface at the time of eCG administration (19 +/- 2.2 follicles vs 19 +/- 2.9 follicles, for pooled progestagen-treated groups and control groups, respectively; mean +/- SEM) but significantly decreased the number of large anovulatory follicles (4.7 +/- 1.0 vs 10.2 +/- 2.6; P < or = 0.01) observed following treatment. Progestagen-treated animals were classified according to the presence (n = 13) or absence (n = 5) of a large follicle (LF: > or = 4 mm diameter) on the ovarian surface at the time of eCG treatment; a qualitatively better superovulatory response was observed in ewes without large follicle (large anovulatory follicles: 1.6 +/- 0.7 vs 5.8 +/- 1.3, P < or = 0.05; normal CL: 7.0 +/- 1.4 vs 3.8 +/- 1.0, P < or = 0.1; normal CL/total ovarian response: 78.7 +/- 10.1 % vs 34.9 +/- 8.2 %, P < or = 0.01; for ewes without LF and ewes with 1 to 2 LF respectively). No differences were observed in the individual ovulatory response when comparing ovaries ipsilateral or contralateral to LF in a same animal, indicating that the effect of LF on the superovulatory response would be fundamentally systemic. This work shows that, similar to what occurs in cows, the presence of a large follicle at the time of gonadotropin administration decreases the superovulatory response in anestrous ewes.
