Control of gastrointestinal parasitism with an oxfendazole pulse-release anthelmintic device

Gastrointestinal nematode infections of first-grazing season calves in Western Europe: general patterns and the effect of chemoprophylaxis

Research on the prevention of gastrointestinal nematode infections of cattle has mainly concentrated on comparing a specific chemoprophylactic treatment system to an untreated control group on a particular farm. Here, the results from analysis of 85 studies involving over 2000 first grazing season (FGS) calves put onto pasture for at least 4 months from late spring/early summer over a 26-year period in 13 countries in Western Europe are presented. Both control and chemoprophylactic treated FGS calf groups were considered. All chemoprophylactic systems (slow- and pulse-release boli, strategic treatments) were given early in the grazing season. Two general infection levels emerged--'sub-clinical' (32 studies) and 'clinical' (53 studies). The 'sub-clinical' infections were characterised by no clinical symptoms of parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) being observed in the control groups. Mean faecal egg counts in the 'clinical' control groups were significantly higher than those for 'sub-clinical' control groups for almost the entire season with overall peaks of 275 and 100 EPG respectively. Maximum pasture larval counts were also significantly higher in the 'clinical' control groups with 44% of 'clinical' pastures > 10,000 L3 kg(-1) dry herbage by the end of the FGS, compared to only 15% of 'sub-clinical' pastures. There was a significant positive relationship between log transformed worm burdens from tracers put onto pastures for 2 weeks and the corresponding pasture larval count. No evidence of density dependence in tracer worm burden was observed. Weight gains in the 'clinical' control groups (375 g/day) were significantly lower than those of the 'sub-clinical' control groups (530 g/day). No symptoms of PGE were observed in any of the chemoprophylactic treated groups, but in those studies with an outbreak of PGE in the control group, the treated groups had significantly higher faecal egg and pasture larval counts than treated groups in 'sub-clinical' studies. The overall weight gain in chemoprophylactic treated calves in 'clinical' studies (600 g/day) was significantly lower than the chemoprophylactic treated calves in 'sub-clinical' studies (690 g/day), and was not significantly different from the weight gain of control calves in 'sub-clinical' studies. These results indicate that on heavily infected pastures, chemoprophylaxis will prevent PGE, but calves will still suffer production losses.

Efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing dairy calves in Kenya

The efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated under field conditions over a 10-month period. Twenty weaner calves were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 calves each and grazed from March to December on adjacent, similarly contaminated paddocks. Group 1 calves (T-1) served as untreated controls while group 2 calves (T-2) were dosed at turnout with MSRT bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days. The efficacy of MSRT was assessed by comparison of parasitological data (faecal worm egg counts, herbage larval counts, worm counts from tracer calves and set-stocked trial calves, determination of haematological parameters and pepsinogen levels), weight gains and clinical status of the animals. Faecal egg counts from the treated group (T-2) were reduced by 100% (P < 0.001) following treatment and remained significantly (P < 0.05) lower than counts from T-1 calves up to trial termination. The use of MSRT bolus resulted in a reduction of 92% (P < 0.001) in the number of gastrointestinal nematodes in set-stocked calves at the end of the study and a 55 to 85.7% reduction in herbage larval infectivity as reflected in lowered parasite burdens in tracer calves. At the trial termination, the control calves had gained on average (+/- s.d.) 59.4 +/- 4.8 kg (200.0 +/- 7.4 g day-1) and the treated ones on an average 128.6 +/- 10.5 kg (530.0 +/- 13.1 g day-1).

Prophylaxis of bovine trichostrongylidosis and dictyocaulosis in the alpine region: comparison of an early and late administration of the oxfendazole pulse release bolus to first year grazing calves

The effect of the oxfendazole pulse release bolus (OPRB) administered at turnout, in May, or in mid-July on the development of infections with gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworms in first year grazing calves was investigated with three groups of nine animals, all grazing the same pastures in the Swiss midland region. In the calves of Group A (OPRB on 21 May) less than 20 eggs per gram of faeces (e.p.g.) and less than three Dictyocaulus larvae per 10 g (1.p.10 g) of faeces were shed for a period of 126 and 140 days respectively. Towards the end of the grazing period calves of this group excreted significantly higher levels of lungworm larvae (P < 0.05) compared with the other groups. Prior to OPRB administration on 14 July, the calves of Group B developed subclinical infections with trichostrongyles and lungworms which were similar to the untreated control Group C. By 4 weeks after bolus-administration the excretion of trichostrongylid eggs and lungworm larvae declined to levels below 20 e.p.g. and six l.p.10 g respectively. Serum pepsinogen values of the calves of Groups A and B were significantly lower (P < 0.05) compared with the control animals on days 84 and 98 after turnout and reflected mainly subclinical infections. With the exception of one Group A calf developing clinical parasitic gastroenteritis (p.g.e.) at the end of the season, clinical disease was not observed in the treated calves, while seven out of nine control animals grazing on the same pastures exhibited clinical p.g.e. with mean serum pepsinogen values exceeding 4400 mU tyrosine. Calves of Groups A and B gained significantly more weight (P < 0.01) compared with Group C (+36 kg and +41 kg respectively); differences between Groups A and B were not significant. The results indicate that in mixed grazing systems of treated and untreated calves, which are often found in the alpine region, administration of the OPRB in May or July provided good results with respect to performance of the calves. However, late administration of the OPRB has the additional advantage of coverage of the period of higher infection risk with trichostrongyles and lungworms in the late season until stabling, and should therefore be recommended.

World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (W.A.A.V.P.) second edition of guidelines for evaluating the efficacy of anthelmintics in ruminants (bovine, ovine, caprine)

The first edition of the W.A.A.V.P. anthelmintic guidelines for ruminants was published in 1982. Since then improved parasitological procedures have been developed, new therapeutic and prophylactic products have appeared requiring different test methods, and registration authorities are requesting more detailed record keeping and data validation. This second edition addresses these developments and fulfills the original goal of publishing guidelines for high quality, scientifically valid testing standards for trials that would be accepted as proof of efficacy by registration authorities regardless of country of origin. This second edition includes updated guidance on standard parasitological procedures, dose titration, dose confirmation and clinical trials, and provides guidelines for evaluating products for efficacy against anthelmintic resistant parasites, persistence of activity and prophylactic activity. Tests for efficacy against nematodes, trematodes and cestodes are included.

Epidemiological observations on helminth infections of calves in southern Ghana

This paper describes helminth infections in three groups of calves of different ages grazing naturally infested pastures from March 1987 to May 1988. Calves in which the faecal egg output was followed from birth showed Toxocara vitulorum eggs as early as two days after birth and maximum patency occurred after two months. The fall in Toxocara egg output coincided with a rise in that of the strongylates; Haemonchus spp., Trichostrongylus spp. and Oesophagostumum spp. The influence of rainfall in dictating strongylate nematode infection was clear with high egg output during high rainfall and low egg counts when the rainfall was lower. There was an indication that calves carry the infection from the end of the minor rainy season in November to the beginning of the next rains in March and then contribute to pasture contamination. However, calves born in December may remain uninfected until the onset of the rains.

Effect of nematode infections and management practices on growth performance of calves on commercial dairy farms

Liveweight of calves on 86 dairy farms was measured at the end of the grazing season and related per herd to the level of exposure to nematode infection estimated in October and December. There were significant between-herd variations in all the serological infection parameters measured. On average 20.5 larvae per gram faeces (geometric mean) were found in October. Faecal samples of 20.5% of the herds contained lungworm larvae. Liveweight of calves deviated per herd from -59.8 kg to +52.2 kg from an age-adjusted population mean after their first grazing season. Growth performance was significantly related negatively to several serological and parasitological parameters. Data were fitted by means of both linear and segmented curvilinear regression. By combining infection parameters 19% of the variation in growth performance among herds could be explained. Infection parameters involved were antibody titre against Cooperia spp., egg output and lungworm larval count. It was found that antibody titres were significantly correlated positively to herd age, while pepsinogen values and egg output were negatively correlated to age. Combining supplementary feeding and anthelmintic treatment during the grazing season with the infection parameters into one model explained approximately 30% of the observed variation in growth performance among herds. It was shown that these findings were consistent with those of a similar study conducted on the same farms a year earlier, although there were clear differences between the years. Finally, significant positive relations were found between the levels of exposure to nematode parasites within farms between two consecutive years.
