Abstract
Probiotics play a pivotal role in enhancing the health and growth of aquatic animals in aquaculture. These beneficial microorganisms contribute to improved digestion and nutrient absorption by producing digestive enzymes such as amylases, proteases, and lipases, besides providing essential nutrients. By creating a favorable microbial balance in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), probiotics reduce harmful microorganisms and promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. This modification of gut microflora leads to more efficient digestion and significantly enhances overall health and growth performance in fish. Additionally, probiotics produce antimicrobial substances, such as bacteriocins and organic acids, which inhibit pathogenic bacteria and bolster disease resistance. They also play a crucial role in improving water quality in aquaculture systems by aiding in the turnover of organic nutrients and reducing toxic substances. Incorporating probiotics into aquaculture practices has demonstrated considerable potential in boosting the productivity and health of aquatic animals, making them an essential component of sustainable aquaculture. This review delves into the multifaceted benefits of probiotics, including enhanced feed utilization, immune responses, and pathogen resistance, and elucidates the mechanisms underlying these effects. Furthermore, it includes a bibliometric analysis of the past 30 years, providing a comprehensive overview of research trends and advancements in this field.

Abstract
Aquaculture has grown significantly, contributing to global food security and sustainability; however, intensified fish farming has increased disease susceptibility and antibiotic resistance. This study assessed the probiotic potential of Lactobacillus plantarum PSCPL13 (hereafter, PSCPL13), isolated from the intestines of Japanese eels, for enhancing the health of olive flounder. After screening 16 Lactobacillus isolates, PSCPL13 was selected because of its potential broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many pathogens, such as Vibrio and Edwardsiella. This strain exhibited high acid and bile salt tolerance, which is crucial for intestinal survival. Molecular characterisation confirmed PSCPL13 to be L. plantarum. It was resistant to all tested antibiotics and exhibited significant enzyme activity. In vivo assays in olive flounder revealed that the body weight and length of the fish were significantly higher, while the prevalence of pathogens was lower in their gut microbiota. Regarding haematological parameters, the treated groups exhibited lower eosinophil counts and higher IgM levels, suggesting enhancement of the immune system. These findings indicate that PSCPL13 is a potential probiotic that can be used in aquaculture for naturally improving fish health, growth and immunity, in addition to combating antibiotic resistance and reducing environmental impacts. These findings not only highlight the potential of PSCPL13 in sustainable aquaculture but also provide a foundation for the development of future probiotics.

Abstract
With the intensification of aquaculture to meet the rising demands of fish and shellfish, disease outbreaks during the larval and adult stages are a major challenge faced by aqua culturists. As the prophylactic use of vaccines and antibiotics has several limitations, research is now focused on sustainable alternatives to vaccines and antibiotics, e.g., medicinal plants, probiotics, postbiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, as promising candidates to strengthen the immune response of fish and shellfish and to control disease outbreaks. With respect to probiotics, numerous studies are available revealing their health-promoting and beneficial impacts in aquaculture. However, most studies focus on Bacillus and Lactobacillus species. Keeping in view the positive effects of probiotic lactic acid bacteria in aquaculture, researchers are now looking for other probiotic bacteria that can be used in aquaculture. Recently, many non-lactic acid bacteria (non-LAB), which are mainly host-associated, have been reported to reveal beneficial effects in fish and shellfish aquaculture. The main non-LAB probiotic genera are Bifidobacterium, Clostridium, Microbacterium, Micrococcus, Paenibacillus, Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Enterobacter, Phaeobacter Pseudoalteromonas, Pseudomonas, Pseudomonas, and Vibrio. Despite the promising effects of non-LAB probiotics, comparably, there is limited available information in this context. This review focuses only on probiotic strains that are non-LAB, mostly isolated from the host digestive tract or rearing water, and discusses their beneficial effects in fish and shellfish aquaculture. This review will provide detailed information on the use of various non-LAB bacteria and provide a roadmap to future studies on new probiotics for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract
One of the most significant medical advancements of the 20th century was the discovery of antibiotics, which continue to play a vital tool in the treatment and prevention of diseases in humans and animals. However, the imprudent use of antibiotics in all fields of One-Health and concerns about antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens have raised interest in antibiotic use restrictions on a global scale. Despite the failure of conventional antimicrobial agents, only about 15 new antibiotics have been introduced clinically since year 2000 to date. Moreover, there has been reports of resistance to some of these new antibiotics. This has necessitated a need to search for alternative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistant pathogens. Thus, this review compiles and evaluates the approaches-natural compounds, phage treatment, and nanomaterials-that are being used and/or suggested as the potential substitutes for conventional antibiotics.

Abstract
Macrobrachium rosenbergii is a highly valuable prawn species in aquaculture due to its current growing demand in the market. However, various bacterial diseases caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been observed to induce mortality in larval, juvenile, and adult stages of M. rosenbergii. While antibiotics are commonly used to manage these diseases, they contribute to antimicrobial resistance, a global concern with serious environmental and health implications. Consequently, the scientific community is exploring host-derived beneficial microorganisms as functional feed additives, offering eco-friendly alternatives that boost shrimp and prawn immunity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of host-derived beneficial microorganisms from the gut of M. rosenbergii, on the inhibition, immunomodulation, survival, and growth of M. rosenbergii when exposed to V. parahaemolyticus. The result of this study showed that Weissella confusa C6, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from the gut of M. rosenbergii, significantly inhibits the growth of V. parahaemolyticus R1 as demonstrated in agar well diffusion assay and co-culture assay. Additionally, it showed immunomodulatory effects, indicated by elevated total hemocyte count (THC) and phenoloxidase (PO) activity during the bacterial challenge test. Furthermore, supplementing the diet with W. confusa led to significant improvements in M. rosenbergii, including increased survival rates, weight gain, specific growth rate, better feed conversion ratio, and reduced density of V. parahaemolyticus in the prawn's gut. Therefore, it can be considered a viable option for use as a feed supplement in prawn farming, enhancing M. rosenbergii's immune system, disease resistance, and overall health.

Abstract
Isochrysis galbana is valuable in aquaculture due to its production of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, achieving high yields of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) presents challenges, leading to exploration of innovative approaches. This study investigated the influence of Bacillus jeotgali on the growth of I. galbana and its fatty acid composition. Co-culturing I. galbana with B. jeotgali significantly increased chlorophyll a content and cell abundance, particularly at higher bacterial population densities (algae-to-bacteria ratio of 1:10). Physiological and biochemical analyses found elevated soluble protein content in microalgae co-cultured with B. jeotgali, accompanied by decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Fatty acid composition analysis demonstrated a distinctive profile in co-cultured I. galbana, characterized by increased PUFAs, especially EPA and DHA. Gene expression analysis indicated an upregulation of desaturase genes (d4FAD, d5FAD, d6FAD, and d8FAD) associated with PUFA synthesis pathway in I. galbana during co-culturing with B. jeotgali. This study advances our understanding of bacteria-microalgae interactions and presents a promising strategy for enhancing the production of DHA and EPA.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the effect of dietary supplementation with the probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens AV5 (OR647358) on the growth, serum and mucus immune responses, metabolomics, and lipid metabolism of Oreochromis niloticus. Fishes (27.2 ± 1.7 g and 9.0 ± 1.2 cm) were fed three distinct meals: a commercial diet (control-GC) and two treatment diets supplemented with probiotics at 106 (G1) and 108 cfu/g (G2), respectively, for 30 days. In the G2 group, the final weight, specific growth rate, weight gain rate, survival rate, and feed conversion ratio of the fish were significantly improved (p < 0.05). Lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and alkaline phosphatase activities in the mucus of fish were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2 groups. The serum total protein, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen species levels were noticeably higher (p < 0.05) in fish fed G1 and G2. In addition, in the G1 and G2 groups, higher levels of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, such as pyruvate kinase, 2-hydroxyethyl-ThPP, and dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase, were increased. Distal gastrointestinal metabolites, such as glycerophospholipids and histidine, were observed. These findings strongly indicate that incorporating B. amyloliquefaciens AV5 at 108 cfu/g into commercial feeds positively influences fish growth, immunity, and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Frequently, diseases in aquaculture have been fought indiscriminately with the use of antibiotics, which has led to the development and dissemination of (multiple) antibiotic resistances in bacteria. Consequently, it is necessary to look for alternative and complementary approaches to chemotheraphy that are safe for humans, animals, and the environment, such as the use of probiotics in fish farming. The objective of this work was the Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatic and functional analyses of S. salivarius MDI13 and L. sakei MEI5, two LAB strains isolated from the gut of commercial European hakes (M. merluccius, L.) caught in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. The WGS and bioinformatic and functional analyses confirmed the lack of transferable antibiotic resistance genes, the lack of virulence and pathogenicity issues, and their potentially probiotic characteristics. Specifically, genes involved in adhesion and aggregation, vitamin biosynthesis, and amino acid metabolism were detected in both strains. In addition, genes related to lactic acid production, active metabolism, and/or adaptation to stress and adverse conditions in the host gastrointestinal tract were detected in L. sakei MEI5. Moreover, a gene cluster encoding three bacteriocins (SlvV, BlpK, and BlpE) was identified in the genome of S. salivarius MDI13. The in vitro-synthesized bacteriocin BlpK showed antimicrobial activity against the ichthyopathogens Lc. garvieae and S. parauberis. Altogether, our results suggest that S. salivarius MDI13 and L. sakei MEI5 have a strong potential as probiotics to prevent fish diseases in aquaculture as an appropriate alternative/complementary strategy to the use of antibiotics.

Abstract
The healthy intestinal microbiota of shrimp can be used as an indicator sustainable shrimp production. In this study, the integrated of metagenomic and screening probiotic approach from healthy Litopenaeus vannamei intestines in differing stages was studied to find novel indigenous probiotics. The microbiota from intestine of naupli, post larva (PL-10), juvenile (40 days), and adult (80 days) of Pacific white shrimp were characterized using a high-quality sequence of V3-V4 of 16S rRNA gene as the hypervariable region. The classifiable sequence number was detected in 54 phyla. Several core intestine bacteria, 35 of these 557 genera, have a prevalence >10 sequences across all samples. We found microbiota were different taxa in the difference stages, such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteriodetes. The top 10 most abundant genera were Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Spingomonas, Marinibacterium, Klebsiella, Alteromonas, Aestuaribacter, Shimia, Stenotrophomonas, and Ruegeria. Microbiota profiling based on a metagenomic approach was integrated with screening assessment for pathogenicity, antagonistic activity with Vibrio parahaemolyticus Vp5, antibiotic resistance, and digestive enzyme activities. As their assessment activity, several screened culturable bacteria were 19 of these 84 isolates. Three isolates with high activities (P < 0.05) found as novel indigenous probiotics were Shewanella algae A1, Shewanella algae A3, and Vibrio diabolicus UB3. Integrating metagenomic and screening methods was a new signature for the isolating novel indigenous probiotics in Pacific white shrimp.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious worldwide public health concern that needs immediate action. Probiotics could be a promising alternative for fighting antibiotic resistance, displaying beneficial effects to the host by combating diseases, improving growth, and stimulating the host immune responses against infection. This study was conducted to evaluate the probiotic, antibacterial, and antibiofilm potential of Streptomyces levis strain HFM-2 isolated from the healthy human gut. RESULTS In vitro antibacterial activity in the cell-free supernatant of S. levis strain HFM-2 was evaluated against different pathogens viz. K. pneumoniae sub sp. pneumoniae, S. aureus, B. subtilis, VRE, S. typhi, S. epidermidis, MRSA, V. cholerae, M. smegmatis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and E. aerogenes. Further, the ethyl acetate extract from S. levis strain HFM-2 showed strong biofilm inhibition against S. typhi, K. pneumoniae sub sp. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and E. coli. Fluorescence microscopy was used to detect biofilm inhibition properties. MIC and MBC values of EtOAc extract were determined at 500 and 1000 µg/mL, respectively. Further, strain HFM-2 showed high tolerance in gastric juice, pancreatin, bile, and at low pH. It exhibited efficient adhesion properties, displaying auto-aggregation (97.0%), hydrophobicity (95.71%, 88.96%, and 81.15% for ethyl acetate, chloroform and xylene, respectively), and showed 89.75%, 86.53%, 83.06% and 76.13% co-aggregation with S. typhi, MRSA, S. pyogenes and E. coli, respectively after 60 min of incubation. The S. levis strain HFM-2 was susceptible to different antibiotics such as tetracycline, streptomycin, kanamycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, linezolid, meropenem, amikacin, gentamycin, clindamycin, moxifloxacin and vancomycin, but resistant to ampicillin and penicillin G. CONCLUSION The study shows that S. levis strain HFM-2 has significant probiotic properties such as good viability in bile, gastric juice, pancreatin environment, and at low pH; proficient adhesion properties, and antibiotic susceptibility. Further, the EtOAc extract of Streptomyces levis strain HFM-2 has a potent antibiofilm and antibacterial activity against antibacterial-resistant clinical pathogens.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of two distinct probiotics, Leuconostoc mesenteroides B4 (B4) and Bacillus pumilus D5 (D5), along with their combination, on the diet of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) during an eight-week feeding trial. The diets tested included B4 + dextran at 107 CFU/g feed (the B4 group), D5 alone at 107 CFU/g feed (the D5 group), and a combination of B4 + dextran and D5 at 5 × 106 CFU/g feed each (the B4+dextran + D5 group). Relative to the control group, those administered probiotics exhibited moderate enhancements in growth. By the eighth week, the weight gain for the B4, D5, and B4+D5 groups was 696.50 ± 78.15%, 718.53 ± 130.73%, and 693.05 ± 93.79%, respectively, outperforming the control group's 691.66 ± 31.10% gain. The feed conversion ratio was most efficient in the B4 group (2.16 ± 0.06), closely followed by B4+D5 (2.21 ± 0.03) and D5 (2.22 ± 0.06), with the control group having the highest ratio (2.27 ± 0.03). While phenoloxidase activity was somewhat elevated in the B4 and D5 groups, no significant differences were noted in respiratory burst activity or total hemocyte count across all groups. Challenge tests at weeks 4 and 8 showed that the B4 + D5 combination offered superior protection against AHPND-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The 4-week cumulative survival rate was highest in shrimp treated with B4 + dextran + D5 (56.25%), followed by B4 + dextran (31.25%), control (18.75%), and lowest in D5 (12.5%). By week 8, the B4 + dextran + D5 (43.75%) and B4 + dextran (37.5%) groups significantly outperformed the control group (6.25%, p < 0.05), with no significant difference observed between the D5 group (37.5%) and the control group at day 56. Analysis of the shrimp's foregut microbiota revealed an increase in unique OTUs in the B4 and B4 + D5 groups. Compared to the control, Proteobacteria abundance was reduced in all probiotic groups. Potential pathogens like Vibrio, Bacteroides, Neisseria, Botrytis, Clostridioides, and Deltaentomopoxvirus were detected in the control but were reduced or absent in probiotic groups. Beneficial microbes such as Methanobrevibacter and Dictyostelium in the B4+D5 group, and Sugiyamaella in the B4 group, showed significant increases. Probiotics also led to higher transcript levels of nitric oxide synthase in the hemocytes, and lysozyme and transglutaminase in the midgut, along with lysozyme and α2-macroglobulin in the foregut. Notably, the combined B4 + D5 probiotics synergistically enhanced the expression of superoxide dismutase and prophenoloxidase in the foregut, indicating an improved immune response. In summary, this study demonstrates that the probiotics evaluated, especially when used in combination, significantly boost the expression of specific immune-related genes, enhance the bacterial diversity and richness of the intestine, and thus prevent the colonization and proliferation of Vibrio spp. in L. vannamei.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of Technospore® (Bacillus coagulans) supplementation on intestinal health, immune response, and Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) growth performance. The experiment divided fish into four groups: a control group fed an unsupplemented diet and three experimental groups receiving diets supplemented with 0.2 g/kg, 0.4 g/kg, and 0.8 g/kg of Technospore®, respectively. Results indicated that Technospore® supplementation significantly enhanced growth rates and feed efficiency in all treated groups, with the most pronounced improvements observed in the group receiving 0.4 g/kg. Furthermore, the study revealed that B. coagulans supplementation markedly boosted serum immune responses, as evidenced by increased phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, and lysozyme levels, following a challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila. Histological analysis showed improved gut morphology, while gene expression analysis indicated upregulation of immune-related genes, including liver IGF-1, GHR, HSP70, IL-1β, and TNF-α, as well as spleen TNF-α and IL-1β and intestinal C-lysozyme and TNF-α, both before and after the bacterial challenge. These findings suggest that dietary inclusion of Technospore® can significantly improve gut health and immune responses in tilapia, potentially serving as an effective prophylactic alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is an expanding and new technology that prompts production with nanoparticle-based (1-100 nm) organic and inorganic materials. Such a tool has an imperative function in different sectors like bioengineering, pharmaceuticals, electronics, energy, nuclear energy, and fuel, and its applications are helpful for human, animal, plant, and environmental health. In exacting, the nanoparticles are synthesized by top-down and bottom-up approaches through different techniques such as chemical, physical, and biological progress. The characterization is vital and the confirmation of nanoparticle traits is done by various instrumentation analyses like UV-Vis spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, annular dark-field imaging, and intracranial pressure. In addition, probiotics are friendly microbes which while administered in sufficient quantity confer health advantages to the host. Characterization investigation is much more significant to the identification of good probiotics. Similarly, haemolytic activity, acid and bile salt tolerance, autoaggregation, antimicrobial compound production, inhibition of pathogens, enhance the immune system, and more health-beneficial effects on the host. The synergistic effects of nanoparticles and probiotics combined delivery applications are still limited to food, feed, and biomedical applications. However, the mechanisms by which they interact with the immune system and gut microbiota in humans and animals are largely unclear. This review discusses current research advancements to fulfil research gaps and promote the successful improvement of human and animal health.

Abstract
Probiotics in shrimp aquaculture have gained considerable attention as a potential solution to enhance production efficiency, disease management, and overall sustainability. Probiotics, beneficial microorganisms, have shown promising effects when administered to shrimp as dietary supplements or water additives. Their inclusion has been linked to improved gut health, nutrient absorption, and disease resistance in shrimp. Probiotics also play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced microbial community within the shrimp pond environment, enhancing water quality and reducing pathogen prevalence. This article briefly summarizes the many ways that probiotics are used in shrimp farming and the advantages that come with them. Despite the promising results, challenges such as strain selection, dosage optimization, and environmental conditions are carefully addressed for successful probiotic integration in shrimp aquaculture. The potential of probiotics as a sustainable and ecologically friendly method of promoting shrimp development and health while advancing environmentally friendly shrimp farming techniques is highlighted in this analysis. Further research is required to fully exploit probiotics' benefits and develop practical guidelines for their effective implementation in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
Climate change, especially in the form of temperature increase and sea acidification, poses a serious challenge to the sustainability of aquaculture and shellfish farming. In this context, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of marine origin have attracted attention due to their ability to improve water quality, stimulate the growth and immunity of organisms, and reduce the impact of stress caused by environmental changes. Through a review of relevant research, this paper summarizes previous knowledge on this group of bacteria, their application as protective probiotic cultures in mollusks, and also highlights their potential in reducing the negative impacts of climate change during shellfish farming. Furthermore, opportunities for further research and implementation of LAB as a sustainable and effective solution for adapting mariculture to changing climate conditions were identified.

Abstract
Aquaculture provides a rich resource of high-quality protein; however, the production is challenged by emerging pathogens such as Vibrio crassostreae. While probiotic bacteria have been proposed as a sustainable solution to reduce pathogen load in aquaculture, their application requires a comprehensive assessment across the aquaculture food chain. The purpose of this study was to determine the antagonistic effect of the potential probiotic bacterium Phaeobacter piscinae against the emerging fish pathogen V. crassostreae in aquaculture feed algae that can be an entry point for pathogens in fish and shellfish aquaculture. P. piscinae strain S26 produces the antibacterial compound tropodithietic acid (TDA). In a plate-based assay, P. piscinae S26 was equally to more effective than the well-studied Phaeobacter inhibens DSM17395 in its inhibition of the fish pathogens Vibrio anguillarum 90-11-286 and V. crassostreae DMC-1. When co-cultured with the microalgae Tetraselmis suecica and Isochrysis galbana, P. piscinae S26 reduced the maximum cell density of V. crassostreae DMC-1 by 2 log and 3-4 log fold, respectively. A TDA-deficient mutant of P. piscinae S26 inhibited V. crassostreae DMC-1 to a lesser extent than the wild type, suggesting that the antagonistic effect involves TDA and other factors. TDA is the prime antagonistic agent of the inhibition of V. anguillarum 90-11-286. Comparative genomics of V. anguillarum 90-11-286 and V. crassostreae DMC-1 revealed that V. crassostreae DMC-1 carries a greater arsenal of antibiotic resistance genes potentially contributing to the reduced effect of TDA. In conclusion, P. piscinae S26 is a promising new candidate for inhibition of emerging pathogens such as V. crassostreae DMC-1 in algal feed systems and could contribute to a more sustainable aquaculture industry.IMPORTANCEThe globally important production of fish and shellfish in aquaculture is challenged by disease outbreaks caused by pathogens such as Vibrio crassostreae. These outbreaks not only lead to substantial economic loss and environmental damage, but treatment with antibiotics can also lead to antibiotic resistance affecting human health. Here, we evaluated the potential of probiotic bacteria, specifically the newly identified strain Phaeobacter piscinae S26, to counteract these threats in a sustainable manner. Through a systematic assessment of the antagonistic effect of P. piscinae S26 against V. crassostreae DMC-1, particularly within the context of algal feed systems, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of P. piscinae S26 as probiotic and thereby provides a strategic pathway for addressing disease outbreaks in aquaculture. This finding has the potential of significantly contributing to the long-term stability of the industry, highlighting the potential of probiotics as an efficient and environmentally conscious approach to safeguarding aquaculture productivity against the adverse impact of pathogens.

Abstract
Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) is a frequently detected antibiotic in the environment, and there is a growing concern about its potential toxic effects on aquatic organisms. sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicas) is a benthic invertebrate whose gut acts as a primary immune defense and serves critical protective barrier. In this study, growth performance, histology, gut microbiota, and metabolomics analyses were performed to investigate the toxic response in the intestine of sea cucumber effects caused by SMZ stress for 56 d by evaluating with different concentrations of SMZ (0, 1.2×10-3, and 1.2 mg/L). The weight gain rate of sea cucumbers under SMZ stress showed significant decrease, indicating that the growth of sea cucumbers was hindered. Analysis of the intestinal morphological features indicated that SMZ stimulation resulted in atrophy of the sea cucumber gut. In the 1.2×10-3 mg/L concentration, the thickness of muscle and mucosal layers was reduced by 12.40% and 21.39%, while in the 1.2 mg/L concentration, the reductions were 35.08% and 26.98%. The abundance and diversity of sea cucumber intestinal bacteria decreased significantly (P < 0.05) under the influence of SMZ. Notably, the intestinal bacteria of sea cucumber became homogenized with the increase in SMZ concentration, and the relative abundance of Ralstonia reached 81.64% under the stress of 1.2 mg/L concentration. The SMZ stress significantly impacted host metabolism and disrupted balance, particularly in L-threonine, L-tyrosine, neuronic acid, piperine, and docosapentaenoic acid. SMZ leads to dysregulation of metabolites, resulting in growth inhibition and potential inflammatory responses that could adversely affect the normal activities of aquatic organisms. Further metabolic pathway enrichment analyses demonstrated that impaired biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis metabolic pathway were major reasons for SMZ stress-induced intestinal bacteria dysbiosis. This research aims to provide some theoretical evidence for the ecological hazard assessment of antibiotics in water.

Abstract
There is an urgent requirement for the improvement of the white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei; health-related indices; and immunity due to emerging diseases. Recently, probiotics have been playing an important role in L. vannamei health management. Therefore, the current pond trial was to evaluate the probiotic proficiency of commercial probiotic products of THIONIL (THIO) on the enhancement of the water, soil, growth, digestibility, survival, immune-related indices, and susceptibility of L. vannamei to infection. The study was carried out in the major shrimp culturing regions of Kavali, Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), and Ponneri (Tamil Nadu), India. Six groups (lacks/ha) of the experimental L. vannamei were allocated, including a control group (THIO 0%-untreated) and groups containing 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% of THIO that were encapsulated with commercial feed (CP Aqua). Bioassays were performed on PLs/ shrimp at various days interval of 0, 5, 25, 50, 100, and 123th to assess productivity, anti-vibrio activity, and digestive enzyme for digestibility, histological and immunological indices, and cytotoxicity in Artemia nauplii. Significant differences were observed in the increased growth (35.71 ± 3.24 g/shrimp) and digestive parameters in 10% THIO-fed shrimp. Although in contrast to the control group, the other THIO-fed prawn groups also displayed appreciable development. The findings showed that, in comparison to the control, the gill, hepatopancreas, and stomach had reduced tissue damage with 10% THIO. Furthermore, Vibrio parahaemolyticus (0.008 × 104 cfu/g) and Vibrio harveyi (0.051 × 105 cfu/g) (vibriosis) were potentially resistant to the 10% THIO-fed group. In addition, THIO-fed prawns (10%) showed significant improvements in immune-related expresses (proPO, SOD, and SOA) in comparison to the control. In conclusion, the findings showed that the THIO treatment prawns significantly improved the quality of their water (pH, ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and DO) and soil (Pb, Cr, Hg, Mg, Cu, Fe, and Ni), increased and demonstrated protection against vibrio infections.

Abstract
Aquaculture is a fast-emerging food-producing sector in which fishery production plays an imperative socio-economic role, providing ample resources and tremendous potential worldwide. However, aquatic animals are exposed to the deterioration of the ecological environment and infection outbreaks, which represent significant issues nowadays. One of the reasons for these threats is the excessive use of antibiotics and synthetic drugs that have harmful impacts on the aquatic atmosphere. It is not surprising that functional and nature-based feed ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics have been developed as natural alternatives to sustain a healthy microbial environment in aquaculture. These functional feed additives possess several beneficial characteristics, including gut microbiota modulation, immune response reinforcement, resistance to pathogenic organisms, improved growth performance, and enhanced feed utilization in aquatic animals. Nevertheless, their mechanisms in modulating the immune system and gut microbiota in aquatic animals are largely unclear. This review discusses basic and current research advancements to fill research gaps and promote effective and healthy aquaculture production.

Abstract
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is one of the most important cultured marine species around the world. Production of Pacific oysters in China has depended primarily on hatchery produced seeds since 2016, with the successful introduction and development of triploid oysters. However, the seed supply of Pacific oysters is threatened by recurring mass mortality events in recent years. Vibriosis is the most commonly encountered disease associated with intensive oyster culture in hatcheries and nurseries. Vibrio alginolyticus and Bacillus hwajinpoensis were the two strains with pathogenic and probiotic effects, respectively, identified during the Pacific oyster larvae production. To monitor their colonization process in Pacific oyster larvae, green fluorescent protein (GFP) and red fluorescent protein (RFP) were labeled to the pathogenic V. alginolyticus and the probiotic B. hwajinpoensis stain, respectively. The pathogenic and probiotic effects of the two strains during the colonization process were then assessed. Stabile expression of GFP and RFP were observed in corresponding stains, and the capabilities of growth, biofilm formation and in vitro adhesion of GFP- and RFP- tagged stains were not significantly different from those of the wild-type strains. Usage of probiotics of 105 CFU/mL significantly inhibited the growth of pathogenic V. alginolyticus and reduced the mortality of D-sharped larvae. Both the pathogenic and probiotic strains employed a similar route to enter and colonize the oyster larvae, which indicates that competing with pathogens for binding and spreading sites were one of the mechanisms of B. hwajinpoensis to provide the probiotic effects to oyster larvae. In summary, employment of fluorescence-tagged pathogenic and probiotic strains simultaneously provides us with an excellent bioassay model to investigate the potential mechanisms of probiotics.

Abstract
Aquaculture plays an important role in contributing to global food security and nutrition; thus, the intensification and diversification of aquaculture are increasingly considered. However, paralleling the development of the industrial scale in aquaculture, the occurrence of diseases is always an important issue that causes great losses in economics. The finding of approaches that not only improve culture production but also reduce the impact of diseases in cultured animals is crucially essential. Previously, several studies have addressed the potential application of feed additives, such as prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, and microbial-derived metabolites (including short-chain fatty acids-SCFAs), in aquaculture. In this review, we provide an update focusing on the health benefits of dietary supplementation with a type of SCFAs, butyrate, and its producer, Clostridium butyricum, including their effects on growth, feed utilization, body composition, intestinal structure and function, antioxidant activity, immune response, and tolerance against stress and infection in aquatic animals. The outcomes of this study may indicate more benefits of the use of C. butyricum than that of butyrate (and its forms). This review provides general knowledge of the efficacy of butyrate and C. butyricum in aquaculture.

The importance of the gut microbiome in the management of various physiological activities including healthy growth and performance of fish and shellfish is now widely considered and being studied in detail for potential applications in aquaculture farming and the future growth of the fish industry. The gut microbiome in all animals including fish is associated with a number of beneficial functions for the host, such as stimulating optimal gastrointestinal development, producing and supplying vitamins to the host, and improving the host's nutrient uptake by providing additional enzymatic activities. Besides nutrient uptake, the gut microbiome is involved in strengthening the immune system and maintaining mucosal tolerance, enhancing the host's resilience against infectious diseases, and the production of anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory compounds. Because of its significant role, the gut microbiome is very often considered an "extra organ," as it plays a key role in intestinal development and regulation of other physiological functions. Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiome is involved in energy homeostasis by regulating feeding, digestive and metabolic processes, as well as the immune response. Consequently, deciphering gut microbiome dynamics in cultured fish and shellfish species will play an indispensable role in promoting animal health and aquaculture productivity. It is mentioned that the microbiome community available in the gut tract, particularly in the intestine acts as an innovative source of natural product discovery. The microbial communities that are associated with several marine organisms are the source of natural products with a diverse array of biological activities and as of today, more than 1000 new compounds have been reported from such microbial species. Exploration of such new ingredients from microbial species would create more opportunities for the development of the bio-pharma/aquaculture industries. Considering the important role of the microbiome in the whole life span of fish and shellfish, it is necessary to understand the interaction process between the host and microbial community. However, information pertaining to host-microbiome interaction, particularly at the cellular level, gene expression, metabolic pathways, and immunomodulation mechanisms, the available literature is scanty. It has been reported that there are three ways of interaction involving the host-microbe-environment operates to maintain homeostasis in the fish and shellfish gut i.e. host intrinsic factors, the environment that shapes the gut microbiome composition, and the core microbial community present in the gut system itself has equal influence on the host biology. In the present review, efforts have been made to collect comprehensive information on various aspects of host-microbiome interaction, particularly on the immune system and health maintenance, management of diseases, nutrient uptake, digestion and absorption, gene expression, and metabolism in fish and shellfish.

Abstract
The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is a high-yielding prawn variety well-received worldwide due to its ability to adapt to freshwater culture systems. Macrobrachium rosenbergii is an alternative to shrimp typically obtained from marine and brackish aquaculture systems. However, the use of intensive culture systems can lead to disease outbreaks, particularly in larval and post-larval stages, caused by pathogenic agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts and protozoans. White tail disease (viral), white spot syndrome (viral) and bacterial necrosis are examples of economically significant diseases. Given the increasing antibiotic resistance of disease-causing microorganisms, probiotics have emerged as promising alternatives for disease control. Probiotics are live active microbes that are introduced into a target host in an adequate number or dose to promote its health. In the present paper, we first discuss the diseases that occur in M. rosenbergii production, followed by an in-depth discussion on probiotics. We elaborate on the common methods of probiotics administration and explain the beneficial health effects of probiotics as immunity enhancers. Moreover, we discuss the antagonistic effects of probiotics on pathogenic microorganisms. Altogether, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of disease control in M. rosenbergii aquaculture through the use of probiotics, which could enhance the sustainability of prawn culture.

This study aimed to the effects of various newly formulated products on the amino acid composition of the diet and whole-body carcass, and to analyse the growth coefficient, body indices, and gut micromorphology. Methods: One hundred gram of palm sap sugar was cooked in 1.1 litre of fresh water for fifteen minutes, to create 1 litre of 11% palm sap sugar solution (after some of it had been boiled off). Two litres of coconut water were then mixed with the litre of palm sugar solution. One litre of this product was added in turn to 2 g of Aspergillus niger (CP2), 2 g of Rhizopus oligosporus (CP3), and 2 g of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CP4), while freshwater was used as a control (labeled CP1). Aquafeed was added to CP1, CP2, CP3, and CP4, to make diets labeled KP1, KP2, KP3, and KP4. The dosage was 150 ml/kg of feed. Juvenile giant gourami (initial weight 50±0.25 g and length 13.2±0.07 cm) were reared in triplicate net frames (2×1×1 m; water volume 1.5 m 3) in a freshwater concrete pond with a stocking density of 30 juveniles/net. Results: The results supported our hypothesis that different product formulations have a significant effect (P < 0.05) on aquafeed nutrition and the whole-body carcass, growth coefficient, feed utilization, body indices, and gut micromorphology of giant gourami juveniles. The thermal growth coefficient strongly correlated with the daily growth coefficient (r 2 = 92%), condition factor (r 2 = 77%), protein efficiency ratio (r 2 = 75%), while a moderate relationship with the feed intake ( r 2 = 69%). Conclusions: Diet KP3 contains higher total amino acids in diets and carcasses and leads to feed efficiency and better growth for giant gourami.

Abstract
Shrimp aquaculture is currently regarded as a significant commercial and food production sector due to its growing importance as a source of human-consumable protein, As shrimp farming has become more intensive, disease outbreaks have become more common, necessitating the overuse of antimicrobial drugs, which has had a number of unintended consequences. The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is now recognized as one of the world's most pervasive and potentially fatal diseases affecting shrimp. However, there is currently no cure to prevent the disease's uncontrolled incidence and spread. Probiotics are currently favoured over these antimicrobial substances because of their ability to stimulate disease resilience in shrimp farms by strengthening the immune systems naturally. Probiotics for bacterial infections such as vibriosis are well documented, whereas research is still required to identify the legitimate strains for viral diseases. The utilization of these probiotics as a therapy for and preventative measure against WSSV in shrimp farming is a cutting-edge method that has proven to be effective. Some probiotic strains, such as Bacillus spp, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus pentosaceus, have been displayed to enhance the innate immunity of shrimp against WSSV, reduce viral load, increase digestibility and growth, and support the gut microbiome of the host in multiple investigations. The present review explores recent developments regarding the function of probiotics in shrimp, with a focus on their anti-WSSV activity.

Abstract
The usage of probiotics proved advantageous in aquaculture due to its positive impact on fish growth, immune response and environment. This study was aimed to assess the effects of probiotics on growth, survival and histometry of intestine and liver in Gangetic mystus (Mystus cavasius) using two separate experiments for a period of 8 weeks (in aquaria) and 16 weeks (in earthen ponds). Three different probiotic treatments were incorporated i.e. commercial probiotic one; CP-1 (T1), commercial probiotic two; CP-2 (T2), Lab developed (Lab dev.) probiotic (T3) including a control. The results indicated that the probiotics usage especially Lab dev. probiotic (T3) significantly improved the growth parameters such as weight gain (g) and specific growth rate (SGR, %/day) as well as ensured better feed conversion efficiency. Zero mortality was observed in aquaria whereas probiotic application enhanced survivability in earthen ponds. Moreover, all probiotic treatment exhibited positive results for different histo-morphometric features of intestine and liver. Mucus secreting goblet cells and fattening of mucosal fold increased significantly with probiotic usage. The amount of regular shaped nucleus was maximum in T3 with least intra cellular distance between liver tissues in earthen ponds. The greatest value for hemoglobin with lowest glucose level was observed in T3 as well. Furthermore, probiotic ensured low concentration of ammonia during culture. Overall, it was anticipated that the application of probiotics in Gangetic mystus culture resulted positive effect on its growth, feed utilization, survivability, histo-morphometry, immunity and hematological parameters.

Abstract
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) pose unique challenges in microbial community management since they rely on a stable community with key target groups, both in the RAS environment and in the host (in this case, Solea senegalensis). Our goal was to determine how much of the sole microbiome is inherited from the egg stage, and how much is acquired during the remainder of the sole life cycle in an aquaculture production batch, especially regarding potentially probiotic and pathogenic groups. Our work comprises sole tissue samples from 2 days before hatching and up to 146 days after hatching (-2 to 146 DAH), encompassing the egg, larval, weaning, and pre-ongrowing stages. Total DNA was isolated from the different sole tissues, as well as from live feed introduced in the first stages, and 16S rRNA gene was sequenced (V6-V8 region) using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The output was analysed with the DADA2 pipeline, and taxonomic attribution with SILVAngs version 138.1. Using the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index, both age and life cycle stage appeared to be drivers of bacterial community dissimilarity. To try to distinguish the inherited (present since the egg stage) from the acquired community (detected at later stages), different tissues were analysed at 49, 119 and 146 DAH (gill, intestine, fin and mucus). Only a few genera were inherited, but those that were inherited accompany the sole microbiome throughout the life cycle. Two genera of potentially probiotic bacteria (Bacillus and Enterococcus) were already present in the eggs, while others were acquired later, in particularly, forty days after live feed was introduced. The potentially pathogenic genera Tenacibaculum and Vibrio were inherited from the eggs, while Photobacterium and Mycobacterium seemed to be acquired at 49 and 119 DAH, respectively. Significant co-occurrence was found between Tenacibaculum and both Photobacterium and Vibrio. On the other hand, significantly negative correlations were detected between Vibrio and Streptococcus, Bacillus, Limosilactobacillus and Gardnerella. Our work reinforces the importance of life cycle studies, which can contribute to improve production husbandry strategies. However, we still need more information on this topic as repetition of patterns in different settings is essential to confirm our findings.

Abstract
With an ever-growing human population, the need for sustainable production of nutritional food sources has never been greater. Aquaculture is a key industry engaged in active development to increase production in line with this need while remaining sustainable in terms of environmental impact and promoting good welfare and health in farmed species. Microbiomes fundamentally underpin animal health, being a key part of their digestive, metabolic and defense systems, in the latter case protecting against opportunistic pathogens in the environment. The potential to manipulate the microbiome to the advantage of enhancing health, welfare and production is an intriguing prospect that has gained considerable traction in recent years. In this review we first set out what is known about the role of the microbiome in aquaculture production systems across the phylogenetic spectrum of cultured animals, from invertebrates to finfish. With a view to reducing environmental footprint and tightening biological and physical control, investment in "closed" aquaculture systems is on the rise, but little is known about how the microbial systems of these closed systems affect the health of cultured organisms. Through comparisons of the microbiomes and their dynamics across phylogenetically distinct animals and different aquaculture systems, we focus on microbial communities in terms of their functionality in order to identify what features within these microbiomes need to be harnessed for optimizing healthy intensified production in support of a sustainable future for aquaculture.

Abstract
The efficacy of postbiotics on the immune-related gene expression and gut microbiota of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) remains unexplored. A commercial heat-killed postbiotic Pediococcus pentosaceus PP4012 was used to evaluate the growth performance, intestinal morphology, immunological status, and microbial community of white shrimp after dietary administration in this study. White shrimp (0.040 ± 0.003 g) were divided into three treatments; a control, inanimate P. pentosaceus (105 CFU g feed-1) at low concentration (IPL) and inanimate P. pentosaceus (106 CFU g feed-1) at high concentrations (IPH). The diets of IPL and IPH significantly increased final weight, specific growth rate and production compared to the control group. Shrimp fed with IPL and IPH significantly utilized feed more efficiently than those fed the control diet. The IPH treatment significantly lowered the cumulative mortality rate compared to the control and IPL diet following Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. No significant difference was observed for Vibrio-like and lactic acid bacteria in intestine of shrimp fed with the control diet and the experimental diets. Adding inanimate P. pentosaceus significantly improved immune responses such as lysozyme and phagocytic activity compared to the control group. However, the total hemocyte count, phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst, and superoxide dismutase were not significantly different among treatments. The immune-related genes alf, pen3a, and pen4 expression were significantly higher in shrimp fed IPL diet compared with control and IPH. Taxonomic identification of bacterial genera in all dietary groups belonged to two predominant phyla, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. An abundance of Photobacterium, Motilimonas, Litorilituus, and Firmicutes bacterium ZOR0006 were identified in the intestine of shrimp fed postbiotic diets. Unique microbes such as Cohaesibacter was discovered in the shrimp fed IPL while Candidatus Campbellbacteria, uncultured Verrucomicrobium DEV114 and Paenalcaligenes were discovered in the intestines of shrimp fed IPH diet. Collectively, these data suggest that including heat-killed P. pentosaceus, particularly IPH, can enhance growth performance, promote microbial diversity, elevate immune responses, and increase shrimp's resistance to V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) feeding on intestinal microorganisms and protection against infection by Vibrio alginolyticus (V. alginolyticus) in Penaeus vannamei (P. vannamei). We set up two groups, CG30 (fed normal feed) and CB30 (fed feed supplemented with C. butyricum), for the 30d C. butyricum feeding test, and four groups, CG (CG30 group injected with PBS), CB (CB30 group injected with PBS), VACG (CG30 group injected with V. alginolyticus), and VACB (CB30 group injected with V. alginolyticus), for the 24h infection test. The protective effect of C. butyricum against acute V. alginolyticus infection in P. vannamei was explained in terms of survival, histopathology, changes in enzyme activity, transcriptome analysis, and immune-related genes. We found that feeding C. butyricum significantly altered intestinal microbial populations' abundance and significantly reduced Vibrio spp. In the V. alginolyticus stress test, C. butyricum improved the survival rate and alleviated pathological changes in hepatopancreatic tissues, alleviated the reduction of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and phenoloxidase (PO) activity caused by infection, and increased the lysozyme content in P. vannamei. VACB group compared with the VACG group, 1730 up-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 2029 down-regulated DEGs were screened. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that dietary supplementation with C. butyricum suppressed the upregulation of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) transcription factors and the downregulation of prophenoloxidase (proPO), alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M), and anti-lipopolysaccharide factor (ALF) induced by V. alginolyticus infection. In conclusion, feed supplementation with C. butyricum changed P. vannamei's population ratio of intestinal microorganisms. Moreover, C. butyricum has the potential to act as an inhibitor of V. alginolyticus infection and enhance the resistance of P. vannamei to V. alginolyticus infection.

Abstract
Ornamental fish trade represents an important economic sector with an export turnover that reached approximately 5 billion US dollars in 2018. Despite its high economic importance, this sector does not receive much attention. Ornamental fish husbandry still faces many challenges and losses caused by transport stress and handling and outbreak of diseases are still to be improved. This review will provide insights on ornamental fish diseases along with the measures used to avoid or limit their onset. Moreover, this review will discuss the role of different natural and sustainable microbial feed additives, particularly probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on the health, reduction in transport stress, growth, and reproduction of farmed ornamental fish. Most importantly, this review aims to fill the informational gaps existing in advanced and sustainable practices in the ornamental fish production.

Abstract
Aquaculture is affected by numerous factors that may cause various health threats that have to be controlled by the most environmentally friendly approaches. In this context, prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics are frequently incorporated into organisms' feeding rations to ameliorate the health status of the host's intestine, enhancing its functionality and physiological performance, and to confront increasing antimicrobial resistance. The first step in this direction is the understanding of the complex microbiome system of the organism in order to administer the optimal supplement, in the best concentration, and in the correct way. In the present review, pre-, pro-, and synbiotics as aquaculture additives, together with the factors affecting gut microbiome in crayfish, are discussed, combined with their future prospective outcomes. Probiotics constitute non-pathogenic bacteria, mainly focused on organisms' energy production and efficient immune response; prebiotics constitute fiber indigestible by the host organism, which promote the preferred gastrointestinal tract microorganisms' growth and activity towards the optimum balance between the gastrointestinal and immune system's microbiota; whereas synbiotics constitute their combination as a blend. Among pro-, pre-, and synbiotics' multiple benefits are boosted immunity, increased resistance towards pathogens, and overall welfare promotion. Furthermore, we reviewed the intestinal microbiota abundance and composition, which are found to be influenced by a plethora of factors, including the organism's developmental stage, infection by pathogens, diet, environmental conditions, culture methods, and exposure to toxins. Intestinal microbial communities in crayfish exhibit high plasticity, with infections leading to reduced diversity and abundance. The addition of synbiotic supplementation seems to provide better results than probiotics and prebiotics separately; however, there are still conflicting results regarding the optimal concentration.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Bacillus spp. mixture (Bacillus subtilis TISTR001, Bacillus megaterium TISTR067, and Bacillus licheniformis DF001) (1 × 106 CFU/g) on growth, immune parameters, immune-related gene expression, and resistance of Nile tilapia against Streptococcus agalactiae AAHM04. Fish were fed different concentrations of Bacillus spp. 0 (control; T1), 1 (T2), 3 (T3), and 5 (T4) g/kg diets for 120 days. The results showed that weight gain, average daily gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio in T3 diet were significantly higher than the control group and other tested diets (p < 0.05). Immune parameters, such as myeloperoxidase and lysozyme, were significantly higher in the T3 and T4 diets compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Similarly, IL-1β and TNF-α gene expressions in the spleen of fish fed T2, T3, and T4 diets were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences in survival rate, hematology, blood chemical indices, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, body chemical composition, and organosomatic indices (p > 0.05) were noticed in all treatments. No significant differences in survival rate after the challenge test with S. agalactiae AAHM04 were found in fish fed Bacillus spp. mixture diets, except for the T3 diet. These results suggest that Bacillus spp. mixture diet at 3 g/kg diet (T3) could improve growth, immune response, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of Bacillus subtilis and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on growth performances, immunity improvement, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The fish (24.5 ± 1.6 g) were fed a basal diet (G1), diets supplemented with 1 g/kg (G2), 3 g/kg (G3) and 5 g/kg (G4) of FOS as well as diets supplemented with 1 × 109 CFU/g (G5), 3 × 109 CFU/g (G6) and 5 × 109 CFU/g (G7) of B. subtilis for 56 days. After the feeding trial, the complement C3, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, hsp70 gene expression in the liver was then analyzed by a quantitative Real-time PCR. Then, fish were infected with Streptococcus agalactiae, and the survival rate was recorded. The results showed that FOS and B. subtilis had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on growth performances and survival rate. Lysozyme activity was significantly greater in the G4, G5, G6, and G7 groups. Also, all fish fed FOS and B. subtilis showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher respiratory burst activity than other groups. The expressions of complement C3, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and hsp-70 in the liver were significantly higher for fish fed 5 g/kg of FOS as well as for fish that received any concentration level of B. subtilis (P < 0.05) used in the study. After the S. agalactiae challenge test, the survival rate of fish-fed diets supplemented with FOS and B. subtilis was slightly higher than for the control group. The results indicated that FOS and B. subtilis could stimulate immune responses and immune-related genes in tilapia. However, further investigation of other prebiotics or herbs in combination with B. subtilis is encouraged at molecular levels and screening for beneficial metabolites that may increasingly improve digestive enzymes, growth performances, and health benefits in tilapia. In addition, on-farm experiments are needed.

Abstract
White shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) is an important culture species in Taiwan but often encounters disease infection by Vibrio parahaemolyticus that cause acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). This study investigates the effects of dietary supplementation of Leuconostoc mesenteroide B4 and its fermentate (dextran) on the immune response, intestinal morphology, disease resistance, and immune-related gene expression in white shrimp. In comparison to the control group, the shrimp fed with a diet containing B4+dextran (107 CFU B4/g feed and 0.05% dextran) for 14, 28, 42 and 56 days had a significantly higher feed efficiency, weight gain and specific growth rate. A significantly higher villus height in the intestine and higher survival rate after challenging with V. parahaemolyticus was recorded for the B4+dextran group. Flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that the group that had ingested B4+dextran had a higher total hemocyte count and a higher proportion of semi-granulocytes, but a lower percentage of granulocytes compared to the control group. The shotgun metagenomic results in the midgut revealed that Leuco. mesenteroides was barely found in the midgut of the shrimp, suggesting that this microbe and its transient presence in the midgut is not the direct mechanism underlying the improved shrimp growth in the treated sample. Instead, dextran, a key ingredient in the B4 fermentate, on the dynamic of the microbial populations in shrimp, possibly promoting the diversity of gut microbes, especially the beneficial microbes, and thereby rendering protection against AHPND. In terms of comparing the gene expression between the control and synbiotic groups, pre- and post-bacterial challenge, a higher expression level of immune genes was mostly found in the B4+dextran group after challenging it with V. parahaemolyticus (group B4+dextran-VP) in the hepatopancreas and hemocyte. In contrast, the transcript level of immune-related genes was found to be higher in the B4+dextran group than other combinations in the midgut. Taken together, this study found that dietary addition of synbiotic Leuco. mesenteroides B4 and dextran can improve the growth performance, intestinal morphology and microbiome, regulation of immune genes and disease resistance against V. parahaemolyticus infection in white shrimp.

Abstract
Despite an increasing awareness of disease impacts on both cultivated and native seaweed populations, the development of marine probiotics has been limited and predominately focused on farmed animals. Bleaching (loss of thallus pigmentation) is one of the most prevalent diseases observed in marine macroalgae. Endemic probiotic bacteria have been characterized to prevent bleaching disease in red macroalgae Agarophyton vermiculophyllum and Delisea pulchra; however, the extent to which probiotic strains provide cross-protection to non-endemic hosts and the influence of native microbiota remain unknown. Using A. vermiculophyllum as a model, we demonstrate that co-inoculation with the pathogen Pseudoalteromonas arctica G-MAN6 and D. pulchra probiotic strain Phaeobacter sp. BS52 or Pseudoalteromonas sp. PB2-1 reduced the disease risks compared to the pathogen only treatment. Moreover, non-endemic probiotics outperformed the endemic probiotic strain Ralstonia sp. G-NY6 in the presence of the host natural microbiota. This study highlights how the native microbiota can impact the effectiveness of marine probiotics and illustrates the potential of harnessing probiotics that can function across different hosts to mitigate the impact of emerging marine diseases.

Abstract
As a fish unique to Yunnan Province in China, Sinocyclocheilus grahami hosts abundant potential probiotic resources in its intestinal tract. However, the genomic characteristics of the probiotic potential bacteria in its intestine and their effects on S. grahami have not yet been established. In this study, we investigated the functional genomics and host response of a strain, Lactobacillus salivarius S01, isolated from the intestine of S. grahami (bred in captivity). The results revealed that the total length of the genome was 1,737,623 bp (GC content, 33.09%), comprised of 1895 genes, including 22 rRNA operons and 78 transfer RNA genes. Three clusters of antibacterial substances related genes were identified using antiSMASH and BAGEL4 database predictions. In addition, manual examination confirmed the presence of functional genes related to stress resistance, adhesion, immunity, and other genes responsible for probiotic potential in the genome of L. salivarius S01. Subsequently, the probiotic effect of L. salivarius S01 was investigated in vivo by feeding S. grahami a diet with bacterial supplementation. The results showed that potential probiotic supplementation increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and POD) in the hepar and reduced oxidative damage (MDA). Furthermore, the gut microbial community and diversity of S. grahami from different treatment groups were compared using high-throughput sequencing. The diversity index of the gut microbial community in the group supplemented with potential probiotics was higher than that in the control group, indicating that supplementation with potential probiotics increased gut microbial diversity. At the phylum level, the abundance of Proteobacteria decreased with potential probiotic supplementation, while the abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota increased. At the genus level, there was a decrease in the abundance of the pathogenic bacterium Aeromonas and an increase in the abundance of the potential probiotic bacterium Bifidobacterium. The results of this study suggest that L. salivarius S01 is a promising potential probiotic candidate that provides multiple benefits for the microbiome of S. grahami.

Abstract
Simple Summary Potential probiotic bacteria for aquacultured species should be naturally occurring and non-pathogenic in the native habitat of the host, easy to culture, and able to grow in the intestine of the host. Se nanoparticles (Se0Nps) can be effectively used as a growth promoter, antioxidant, and immunostimulant agent in aquacultured species. Dietary supplementation with probiotics and Se0Nps contributes to the balance of the intestinal microbiota and probiotics have been proposed as an alternative to chemotherapeutants and antibiotics to prevent disease outbreaks, to mitigate the negative effects of stress and to strengthen the antioxidant capacity and the immune system of fish. Our results reported the isolation of a probiotic strain obtained from healthy rainbow trout. The strain was identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species. This strain showed characteristics typically present in probiotics and, concurrently, the capacity to biosynthesize Se0Nps. The supplementation of the rainbow trout fish diet with LABS14-Se0Nps showed a positive effect on innate immune response parameters, oxidative status, well-being, and a better growth performance than the supplementation of the diet with the bacterium LABS14 alone. Therefore, we propose LABS14-Se0Nps as a promising alternative for the nutritional supplementation for rainbow trout or even other salmonids. Abstract Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), obtained from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestine, were cultured in MRS medium and probiotic candidates. Concurrently, producers of elemental selenium nanoparticles (Se0Nps) were selected. Probiotic candidates were subjected to morphological characterization and the following tests: antibacterial activity, antibiotic susceptibility, hemolytic activity, catalase, hydrophobicity, viability at low pH, and tolerance to bile salts. Two LAB strains (S4 and S14) satisfied the characteristics of potential probiotics, but only strain S14 reduced selenite to biosynthesize Se0Nps. S14 strain was identified, by 16S rDNA analysis, as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. Electron microscopy showed Se0Nps on the surface of S14 cells. Rainbow trout diet was supplemented (108 CFU g−1 feed) with Se0Nps-enriched L. plantarum S14 (LABS14-Se0Nps) or L. plantarum S14 alone (LABS14) for 30 days. At days 0, 15, and 30, samples (blood, liver, and dorsal muscle) were obtained from both groups, plus controls lacking diet supplementation. Fish receiving LABS14-Se0Nps for 30 days improved respiratory burst and plasmatic lysozyme, (innate immune response) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) (oxidative status) activities and productive parameters when compared to controls. The same parameters also improved when compared to fish receiving LABS14, but significant only for plasmatic and muscle GPX. Therefore, Se0Nps-enriched L. plantarum S14 may be a promising alternative for rainbow trout nutritional supplementation.

Abstract
Nile tilapia is recognized as a suitable candidate for intensive farming and sustainability of the aquaculture industry. However, one issue limiting Nile tilapia expansion in arid and semi-arid areas is the scarcity of freshwater resources. In this study, the supplementation of synbiotics was investigated to enhance the growth performance, growth-related genes, intestinal health, and immunity of Nile tilapia reared in inland brackish groundwater. Four diets were prepared where the basal diets were mixed with the dietary mixture of probiotics and prebiotics (Synbiotic Lactic Dry®, a blend of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, and Bacillus subtilis, mannan oligosaccharides and β-1.3/1.6-D-glucan) at 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg. After eight weeks, the final weight and weight gain are linearly increasing with increasing the supplementation level of synbiotic. Markedly fish fed 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg of synbiotic had higher final weight, weight gain, and feed intake and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than fish fed synbiotic free diet. The specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly higher in fish fed 1 and 2 g/kg than in fish fed 0 and 0.5 g/kg. The intestine of fish fed on synbiotic shows an increase in intestinal villi density. Further, the intestine of fish fed on synbiotic showed an increase in the length and branching intestinal villi (anterior, middle, and posterior) in a dose-dependent manner. The lysozyme and phagocytic activities were significantly different from the control, while synbiotic supplementation did not affect the phagocytic index. Interestingly, the results showed marked upregulation of ghrelin, IGF-1, and GH genes in fish fed synbiotics at 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg. In addition, fish fed 2 g/kg had the highest expression of ghrelin, IGF-1, and GH genes. In conclusion, growing Nile tilapia in inland brackish groundwater can be achieved without negative impacts on the growth performance and health status. Supplementing synbiotics (1-2 g/kg) in Nile tilapia feeds enhanced the growth and feed performances, intestinal histomorphological features, growth-related genes, and immune response.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of two probiotics, namely Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum, as feed additives on growth performance, nonspecific immunity, immune-related gene expression, and disease resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Penaeus vannamei. The experimental diets were prepared using L. paracasei and B. longum at concentrations of 105 and 107 CFU/g; these diets were referred to as P5, P7, B5, and B7. After 8 weeks of the diets, regarding growth performance, the B7 group showed the highest weight gain rate (890.34 ± 103.65%), special growth rate (4.08 ± 0.19%), and feed conversion rate (1.52 ± 0.19%) compared with the other groups. Moreover, the total hemocyte counts were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the P7 groups on day 14 during the 28-day feeding trial. The phagocytosis rate in all experimental groups was increased on day 14 and was persistently significantly activated to day 21, especially in the P7 and B5 group. The phagocytic index of the P7 group showed a significant increase on day 14 and persistent activation to day 21. In the analysis of respiratory burst activity and phenoloxidase activity, the P7 and B5 groups showed a significant increase on day 7 and persistent activation to day 21. The expression level of the immune-related genes of superoxide dismutase, clotting protein, Penaeidin2, Penaeidin3, Penaeidin4, anti-LPS factor, crustin, and lysozyme was significantly increased in the experimental groups, especially in the P7 group. Furthermore, the optimum conditions of feed additives were determined in challenge trials conducted using P7 and B5. Shrimps fed P7 and B5 showed an increased survival rate (72.73% and 66.67%) after the V. parahaemolyticus challenge. In sum, the results revealed that B. longum, as a feed additive at 107 CFU/g, enhanced growth performance. L. paracasei at 107 CFU/g and B. longum at 105 CFU/g can enhance nonspecific immune responses and immune-related gene expression, and 107 CFU/g L. paracasei has the highest resistance ability for V. parahaemolyticus. Thus, dietary supplementation with L. paracasei and B. longum may be a valuable approach in white shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
In addition to their use in human medicine, antimicrobials are also used in food animals and aquaculture, and their use can be categorized as therapeutic against bacterial infections. The use of antimicrobials in aquaculture may involve a broad environmental application that affects a wide variety of bacteria, promoting the spread of bacterial resistance genes. Probiotics and bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides produced by some types of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), have been successfully tested in aquatic animals as alternatives to control bacterial infections. Supplementation might have beneficial impacts on the intestinal microbiota, immune response, development, and/or weight gain, without the issues associated with antibiotic use. Thus, probiotics and bacteriocins represent feasible alternatives to antibiotics. Here, we provide an update with respect to the relevance of aquaculture in the animal protein production sector, as well as the present and future challenges generated by outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance, while highlighting the potential role of probiotics and bacteriocins to address these challenges. In addition, we conducted data analysis using a simple linear regression model to determine whether a linear relationship exists between probiotic dose added to feed and three variables of interest selected, including specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and lysozyme activity.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess dietary organic zinc on zinc homeostasis, antioxidant capacity, immune response, glycolysis and intestinal microbiota in white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone, 1931). Six experimental diets were formulated: Control, zinc free; S120, 120 mg·kg-1 zinc from ZnSO4·7H2O added into control diet; O30, O60, O90 and O120, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg·kg-1 zinc from Zn-proteinate added into control diet, respectively. The results showed that organic zinc significantly promoted zinc content and gene expression of ZnT1, ZIP11 and MT in the hepatopancreas and enhanced antioxidant capacity and immunity (in terms of increased activities of T-SOD, Cu/Zn SOD, PO, LZM, decreased content of MDA, upregulated expressions of GST, G6PDH, ProPO, LZM and Hemo, and increased resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus). Organic zinc significantly upregulated GluT1 expression in the intestine, increased glucose content of plasma and GCK, PFK and PDH activities of hepatopancreas, and decreased pyruvate content of hepatopancreas. Organic zinc improved intestinal microbiota communities, increased the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria and decreased the abundance of potential pathogens. Inorganic zinc (S120) also had positive effects, but organic zinc (as low as O60) could achieve better effects. Overall, organic zinc had a higher bioavailability and was a more beneficial zinc resource than inorganic zinc in shrimp feeds.

Abstract
Bacterial and viral diseases in aquaculture result in severe production and economic losses. Among pathogenic bacteria, species belonging to the Vibrio genus are one of the most common and widespread disease-causing agents. Vibrio infections play a leading role in constraining the sustainable growth of the aquaculture sector worldwide and, consequently, are the target of manifold disease prevention strategies. During the early, larval stages of development, Vibrio species are a common cause of high mortality rates in reared fish and shellfish, circumstances under which the host organisms might be highly susceptible to disease preventive or treatment strategies such as vaccines and antibiotics use, respectively. Regardless of host developmental stage, Vibrio infections may occur suddenly and can lead to the loss of the entire population reared in a given aquaculture system. Furthermore, the frequency of Vibrio-associated diseases in humans is increasing globally and has been linked to anthropic activities, in particular human-driven climate change and intensive livestock production. In this context, here we cover the current knowledge of Vibrio infections in fish aquaculture, with a focus on the model species gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a highly valuable reared fish in the Mediterranean climatic zone. Molecular methods currently used for fast detection and identification of Vibrio pathogens and their antibiotic resistance profiles are addressed. Targeted therapeutic approaches are critically examined. They include vaccination, phage therapy and probiotics supplementation, which bear promise in supressing vibriosis in land-based fish rearing and in mitigating possible threats to human health and the environment. This literature review suggests that antibiotic resistance is increasing among Vibrio species, with the use of probiotics constituting a promising, sustainable approach to prevent Vibrio infections in aquaculture.

Abstract
This study aims to mine a previously developed continuous-flow competitive exclusion culture (CFCEC) originating from the Tilapia gut microbiome as a rational and efficient autochthonous probiotic strain recovery source. Three isolated strains were tested on their adaptability to host gastrointestinal conditions, their antibacterial activities against aquaculture bacterial pathogens, and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Their genomes were fully sequenced, assembled, annotated, and relevant functions inferred, such as those related to pinpointed probiotic activities and phylogenomic comparative analyses to the closer reported strains/species relatives. The strains are possible candidates of novel genus/species taxa inside Lactococcus spp. and Priestia spp. (previously known as Bacillus spp.) These results were consistent with reports on strains inside these phyla exhibiting probiotic features, and the strains we found are expanding their known diversity. Furthermore, their pangenomes showed that these bacteria have indeed a set of so far uncharacterized genes that may play a role in the antagonism to competing strains or specific symbiotic adaptations to the fish host. In conclusion, CFCEC proved to effectively allow the enrichment and further pure culture isolation of strains with probiotic potential.

Abstract
A 60-day feeding trial was performed to assess the dietary effect of Lactobacillus casei as a probiotic supplement on some serum biochemical parameters and liver histopathology in common carp fry after exposure to iron oxide nanoparticles (IoNPs). Six treatments were prepared as follows: control (no IoNP exposure and no dietary probiotic), P6: 106 CFU/g probiotic diet, P7: 107 CFU/g probiotic diet, NPs: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs, NPs + P6: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs with 106 CFU/g probiotic diet, and NPs + P7: 0.15 mg/l IoNPs with 107 CFU/gprobiotic diet. Based on the results, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly increased in 0.15 mg/l IoNPs, P7, and NPs + P6 treatments compared to the control group. In addition, the examination of antioxidant enzymes showed a significant increase in the levels of cortisol and glutathione S-transferase as well as malondialdehyde level. IoNPs also caused significant histopathological changes in the fish liver during the experiment such as hyperemia in sinusoidal spaces, hepatocytes vacuolation and necrosis, pyknosis, and disruption of hepatic lobules and atrophy. Results revealed the protective effects of dietary L. casei to mitigate the adverse impacts of IoNPs on the physiological processes of common carp.
