Abstract
This study investigated that the effect of nano-selenium (nano-Se) addition preventing prehierarchical follicular atresia induced by mercury (Hg) exposure in laying hens. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway was explored to reveal the protective mechanism of nano-Se in vitro. The results revealed that Hg could significantly reduce laying performance (P < 0.05) and egg quality (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition partially reversed the reductions. Besides, Hg significantly induced the deposition of Hg in prehierarchical follicles (P < 0.05) and prehierarchical follicular atresia (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition could alleviate these toxicities in vitro. In addition, Hg exposure could significantly reduce cell viability (P < 0.05) and induce pyknotic nucleus in prehierarchical granulosa cells, while nano-Se addition reversed these effects. The levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (P < 0.05), luteinizing hormone (P < 0.05), progesterone (P < 0.05), and estradiol (P < 0.05) were significantly decreased after Hg exposure in vitro. However, nano-Se addition reversed the decreases of sex hormone levels. Furthermore, Hg exposure significantly increased the gene expressions of CHOP (P < 0.05), PERK (P < 0.05), ATF4 (P < 0.05), ATF6 (P < 0.05), ASK1 (P < 0.05), IRE1α (P < 0.05), TRAF2 (P < 0.05), caspase-9 (P < 0.05), caspase-3 (P < 0.05), and Bax/Bcl-2 (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition reversed these increases of gene expressions in vitro. In summary, this study provides that Hg can induce prehierarchical follicular atresia, whereas nano-Se addition can ameliorate it, and elucidates an important role of ER stress in nano-Se alleviating prehierarchical follicular atresia induced by Hg in laying hens.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of dietary nanoselenium (nano-Se) supplementation protecting from renal oxidative damages induced by mercury (Hg) exposure in laying hens. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway was explored to reveal the protective mechanism of nano-Se. A total of 576 40-week-old Hyline-White laying hens were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 6 pens per group and 24 hens per pen. The experimental groups were as follows: control (basal diet), control + 27.0 mg/kg Hg, control + 5.0 mg/kg nano-Se, and Hg27.0 + 5.0 mg/kg nano-Se. The results revealed that dietary Hg exposure significantly reduced laying performance (P < 0.05) and egg quality (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se supplementation partially reversed the reductions. Besides, dietary Hg exposure could induce histopathology damages and apoptosis in kidney, whereas nano-Se addition could alleviate these toxicities effectively. After Hg exposure, the activities and gene expressions of superoxidative dismutase (SOD) (P < 0.05), catalase (CAT) (P < 0.01), glutathione reductase (GR) (P < 0.05) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P < 0.05), and glutathione (GSH) content (P < 0.05) were significantly decreased, while the malondialdehyde (MDA) level was significantly increased (P < 0.05) in kidney. However, nano-Se supplementation partially reversed the levels and gene expressions of these antioxidant biomarkers in kidney. Furthermore, dietary Hg exposure significantly increased the gene expressions of PERK (P < 0.05), ATF4 (P < 0.05), CHOP (P < 0.05), IRE1α (P < 0.05), TRAF2 (P < 0.05), ASK1 (P < 0.05), Caspase-9 (P < 0.05), Caspase-8 (P < 0.05), Caspase-3 (P < 0.05), and Bax/Bcl-2 (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se supplementation partially reversed these increases of gene expressions. In summary, this study provides evidence that dietary Hg exposure can induce renal oxidative damages, and elucidates an important role of ER stress pathway in nano-Se alleviating renal apoptosis in laying hens.

Abstract
3D printing technology is increasingly used in flow analysis, to develop low cost and tailor-made devices. The possibility of grafting specific molecules onto 3D printed parts offers new perspectives for the development of flow systems. In this study, a MPFS system including a dicarboxylate 1,5-diphenyl-3-thiocarbazone grafted 3D-printed device has been developed for mercury determination. For this purpose, the surface of 3D-printed cuboids was first modified with amine functional groups and then grafted with dicarboxylate 1,5-diphenyl-3-thiocarbazone. This new grafted device resulted in selective mercury preconcentration with extraction and elution yields higher than 90% even at high sampling flow rates. The detection can then be carried out in two ways: a direct detection of mercury extracted onto 3D-printed grafted cuboids by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after amalgam on gold or a detection of mercury in solution after elution with l-cysteine by spectrophotometry or cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of mercury chloride (HgCl2 ) on the deposition of mercury (Hg), histopathology and oxidative stress in liver and kidney of laying hens. The gene expressions of antioxidant enzymes and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) were further studied to uncover the molecular mechanism. A total of 960 40-week-old Hyline brown laying hens were randomly allocated to five treatments with eight pens per treatment and 24 hens per pen. The hens were fed with five experimental diets containing graded levels of Hg at 0.270, 1.250, 3.315, 9.405 and 27.230 mg/kg respectively. Results revealed that both deposition of Hg and score of injury in liver and kidney were significantly increased as dietary Hg dosage up to 27.230 mg/kg diet. Deposition of Hg was positively related to score of injury in liver and kidney of laying hens. Besides, the activities of superoxidative dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione (GSH) content all significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while malondialdehyde (MDA) content significantly increased (p < 0.05) after Hg exposure in liver and kidney of laying hens. In addition, positive relationships occurred between antioxidant enzyme activities and antioxidant enzyme gene expressions except between SOD activity and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene expression in liver. Meanwhile, Nrf2 gene expression was positively related to antioxidant gene expressions and negatively connected with Keap1 gene expression. Negative relationships occurred between Nrf2 and Keap1 protein levels in liver and kidney. In conclusion, Hg could dose-dependently damage liver and kidney and induced hepatic and renal oxidative stress by means of suppressing Nrf2-Keap1 signalling molecule in laying hens.

Abstract
A new green on-line method for Boldine determination (BOL) in herbal drugs and phytopharmaceuticals, using its native fluorescence in acid media (λex=282nm; λem=373nm) has been developed. The presented methodology involves for the first time, a flow injection (FI) strategy using a mini-column of multiwalled carbon nanotubes as retention agent coupled with molecular fluorescence. Different parameters influence as sample pH and flow rate, eluent flow rate and composition; on BOL sensitivity and elution time was investigated by multifactorial techniques. Adequate dynamic calibration range (r2=0.9993) was obtained over a concentration interval of 0.029-27.0μgmL-1 BOL. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.008 and 0.029μgmL-1, respectively. The average recoveries in explored samples ranged from 95% to 103%. Under optimized conditions, the throughput sample as high as 30h-1 was achieved with high repeatability performance (99%). The proposed development represents a useful and valuable tool emulating the analytical efficiency of the official methodologies for quality control of herbal and phytopharmaceutical drugs containing BOL. Moreover, this approach shows advantages respect to low cost, simplicity and environmental and analyst friendly.

Abstract
Abstract
The present paper outlines the use of the novel polydentate Schiff's base extractant, N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthalideneaminoethyl)amine (H2L), for copper(II) extraction in aqueous two-phase micellar of non-ionic surfactant from sulphate media. The extraction process is based on the formation of the hydrophobic complex of copper(II)-H2L, which is subsequently extracted into the non-ionic surfactant-rich phase of p-octylpolyethyleneglycolphenylether (Triton X-100) at a temperature above the cloud point temperature (CPT). The phase diagrams of the binary system, water-surfactant (Triton X-100), and of the ternary systems, water-surfactant-salt (Na2SO4), were examined. The effects of the main experimental parameters such as pH, extractant concentration and non-ionic surfactant concentration on the extraction process of copper(II) were studied. The extraction yield was found to be significantly depending on the aqueous solution pH. Copper(II) was extracted with H2L and Triton X-100 in the pH range of (3–12). From the equilibrium slope analysis method, it was suggested that the stoichiometry of the extracted complexes have a composition of 1:1 (Cu:H2L). The optimum conditions of the extraction of copper(II) have been established as the following: (1) 2 × 10−3 M extractant; (2) 5% (m/v) surfactant; (3) pH of 7.2; (4) 7% (m/v) Na2SO4 and (5) temperature of 65°C.

Abstract
Cloud-point extraction (CPE), an easy, safe, environmentally friendly, rapid and inexpensive methodology for preconcentration and separation of trace metals from aqueous solutions has recently become an attractive area of research and an alternative to liquid-liquid extraction. Moreover, it provides results comparable to those obtained with other separation techniques and has a greater potential to be explored in improving detection limits and other analytical characteristics over other methods. A few reviews have been published covering different aspects of the CPE procedure and its relevant applications, such as the phenomenon of clouding, the application in the extraction of trace inorganic and organic materials, as well as pesticides and protein substrates from different sources, or incorporation of CPE into an FIA system. This review focuses on general properties of the most frequently used organic ligands in cloud-point extraction and on literature data (from 2000 to 2012) concerning the use of modern techniques in determination of metal ions' content in various materials. The article is divided according to the class of organic ligands to be used in CPE.

Abstract
In this paper, a method involving on-line preconcentration with cloud point extraction for the determination of cadmium in biological samples is presented. The procedure is based on the sorption of micelles containing Cd(II) ions and the reagent 4-(5'-bromo-2'-thiazolylazo)orcinol (Br-TAO) in a minicolumn packed with polyester. The surfactant Triton X-114 was used in the formation of micelles. After sorption, the Cd(II) ions were desorbed from the minicolumn with acid eluent and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Parameters influencing the cloud point extraction were studied. The method showed a detection limit of 0.5 μg l(-1) and an enhancement factor of 27. The accuracy was tested by determination of cadmium in certified reference materials (spinach leaves 1570a and tomato leaves 1573a) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Abstract
Graphene, a novel class of carbon nanostructures, has great promise for use as sorbent materials because of its ultrahigh specific surface area. A new method using a column packed with graphene as sorbent was developed for the preconcentration of trace amounts of lead (Pb) using dithizone as chelating reagent prior to its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Some effective parameters on the extraction and complex formation were selected and optimized. Under optimum conditions, the calibration graph was linear in the concentration range of 10.0-600.0 μg L(-1) with a detection limit of 0.61 μg L(-1). The relative standard deviation for ten replicate measurements of 20.0 and 400.0 μg L(-1) of Pb were 3.56 and 3.25%, respectively. Comparative studies showed that graphene is superior to other adsorbents including C18 silica, graphitic carbon, and single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the extraction of Pb. The proposed method was successfully applied in the analysis of environmental water and vegetable samples. Good spiked recoveries over the range of 95.3-100.4% were obtained. This work not only proposes a useful method for sample preconcentration, but also reveals the great potential of graphene as an excellent sorbent material in analytical processes.

Abstract
A study on the phenomenon of clouding and the applications of cloud point technology has been thoroughly discussed. The phase behaviour of clouding and various methods adopted for the determination of cloud point of various surfactant systems have been elucidated. The systems containing anionic, cationic, nonionic surfactants as well as microemulsions have been reviewed with respect to their clouding phenomena and the effects of structural variation in the surfactant systems have been incorporated. Additives of various natures control the clouding of surfactants. Electrolytes, nonelectrolytes, organic substances as well as ionic surfactants, when present in the surfactant solutions, play a major role in the clouding phenomena. The review includes the morphological study of clouds and their applications in the extraction of trace inorganic, organic materials as well as pesticides and protein substrates from different sources.

Abstract
A flow injection (FI) cloud point extraction (CPE) method for the determination of iron and copper by flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) has been improved. The analytes were complexed with 3-amino-7-dimethylamino-2-methylphenazine (Neutral Red, NR) and octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol (Triton X-114)wasadded as a surfactant. The micellar solutionwasheated above 50 degrees C and loaded through a column packed with cotton for phase separation. Then the surfactant-rich phase was eluted using 0.05 mol L(-1) H2SO4 and the analytes were determined by FAAS. Chemical and flow variables influencing the instrumental and extraction conditions were optimized. Under optimized conditions for 25 mL of preconcentrated solution, the enrichment factors were 98 and 69, the limits of detection (3s) were 0.7 and 0.3 ng mL(-1), the limits of quantification (10s) were 2.2 and 1.0 ng mL(-1) for iron and copper, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for ten replicate measurements of 10 ng mL(-1) iron and copper were 2.1% and 1.8%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to determination of iron and copper in spice samples.

Abstract
The on-line incorporation of cloud point extraction (CPE) with/without 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-Ox) as chelating agent into flow injection analysis associated with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for determining trace rare earth elements (REEs) is presented and evaluated. The significant parameters affecting on-line cloud point extraction of REEs such as sample pH, flow rate, 8-Ox concentration, Triton X-114 concentration were systematically studied. Under the optimized conditions, with the consumption of 3.0 mL sample solution, the limits of detection (3 sigma) were ranged from 41.4 pg mL(-1) (Yb) to 448 pg mL(-1) (Gd) with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.0% (Eu)-5.9% (Sm) for on-line CPE-ICP-OES with 8-Ox as chelating agent, and 69.0 pg mL(-1) (Sc) to 509.5 pg mL(-1) (Sm) with RSDs of 2.9% (Yb)-7.5% (Ho) for on-line CPE-ICP-OES without 8-Ox as chelating agent, respectively. The sample throughput of 17samples h(-1) was obtained for both systems. The developed methods of on-line CPE-ICP-OES were validated by the analysis of certified reference material (GBW07605, tea leaves) and real biological samples of pig liver, Auricularia auricula and mushroom.

Abstract
A novel solid phase extraction method for the determination of mercury has been developed. The Hg(II) ions were retained on a mini-column packed with agar powder modified with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole at a flow rate of 6 mL min(-1). The retained Hg(II) ions were eluted with 3 mol L(-1) solution of HCl and measured by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS). The effect of different variables such as pH, sample flow rate, amounts of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole loaded on agar and SnCl(2) concentration was investigated and optimum conditions were established. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.040-2.40 ng mL(-1) with r=0.9994 (n=8). The limit of detection based on three times the standard deviation (3S(b)) (n=10) obtained under optimum conditions was 0.02 ng mL(-1). The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for the determination of 0.4 and 2.0 ng mL(-1) of Hg(II) was 2.6 and 1.9% (n=8), respectively. The method was successfully applied to determine Hg(II) in water, wastewater and fish samples.

Abstract
A flow injection (FI) micelle-mediated separation/preconcentration procedure for the determination of lead and cadmium by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) has been proposed. The analytes reacted with 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN) to form hydrophobic chelates, which were extracted into the micelles of 0.05% (w/v) Triton X-114 in a solution buffered at pH 8.4. In the preconcentration stage, the micellar solution was continuously injected into a flow system with four mini-columns packed with cotton, glass wool, or TNT compresses for phase separation. The analytes-containing micelles were eluted from the mini-columns by a stream of 3molL(-1) HCl solution and the analytes were determined by FAAS. Chemical and flow variables affecting the preconcentration of the analytes were studied. For 15mL of preconcentrated solution, the enhancement factors varied between 15.1 and 20.3, the limits of detection were approximately 4.5 and 0.75microgL(-1) for lead and cadmium, respectively. For a solution containing 100 and 10microgL(-1) of lead and cadmium, respectively, the R.S.D. values varied from 1.6 to 3.2% (n=7). The accuracy of the preconcentration system was evaluated by recovery measurements on spiked water samples. The method was susceptible to matrix effects, but these interferences were minimized by adding barium ions as masking agent in the sample solutions, and recoveries from spiked sample varied in the range of 95.1-107.3%.

The on-line incorporation of cloud point extraction (CPE) to flow injection analysis (FIA) was previously based on the use of a cotton-packed column to entrap the analyte-containing surfactant aggregates after salt-induced CPE, and then the preconcentrated analyte was eluted into a separate detection cell for subsequent chemiluminescence (CL) detection (via the peroxyoxalate CL reaction). In the work, the on-line CPE/FIA technique was improved by the following: (1) sample preconcentration and CL detection were both carried out directly inside the collection column, thus avoiding the decrease in detection sensitivity due to sample dispersion and dilution, and (2) CL detection was performed through the reaction between nitrite and hydrogen peroxide, which is compatible with aqueous samples and should allow for chemical excitation to occur more efficiently inside the collection column. In addition to more effective sample preconcentration, the CL detection of the entrapped analytes directly inside the collection column, i.e., a unique heterogeneous microenvironment in which analyte-containing surfactant aggregates were embedded within the densely packed filtering material, may also contribute to the overall increase in CL intensity (e.g., a CL enhancement factor of ca. 1000). Under optimum experimental conditions, the calibration curve was found to be linear for the CL detection of bilirubin (5 to 120 microg L(-1)), the limit of detection (S/N = 3) was 1.8 microg L(-1), and the R.S.D. was ca. 2.6% (n = 30) for 20 microg L(-1) bilirubin. Good agreements were obtained for the determination of total bilirubin in certified reference human serum samples between the present approach and an established clinical method.

Abstract
The dissolution behavior of montroydite (HgO) has been studied using a fully automated system. Dissolution data under equilibrium conditions are in agreement with previously published data and indicate that HgO solubility is relatively high and constant between pH 4 and 10.1 and increases markedly at pH<4. The dissolution rate also has similar behavior: it is relatively high and constant between pH 4 and 10.1 and increases sharply at pH<4. The dissolution process obeys a three-dimensional contraction or attrition mechanism. The dissolution rate increases with increasing temperature and stirring rate and is the result of mixed transport and reaction control. The rate of HgO dissolution is considerably higher than that of other divalent metal oxides at low pH. This high rate is due to the ability of Hg(II) to rapidly exchange its ligands. Data suggest that montroydite will only occur in nature in highly contaminated sites and indicate that Hg oxidation products that are formed at the liquid Hg/water interface may dissolve rapidly.

Abstract
A strong chemiluminescence (CL) response is observed when potassium permanganate solution is injected into basic luminol solution. When the CL reaction terminates, subsequent injection of Hg2+ solution into the reaction mixture results in a new CL reaction. Based on the post-catalytic enhancement effect of Hg2+ on the potassium permanganate-luminol system in basic media, a fast and simple CL-coupled flow injection analysis for the determination of Hg2+ was developed. In optimum conditions, CL intensity is proportional to Hg2+ concentration over the range 1.0 x 10(-8)-1.0 x 10(-5) g/mL, with a detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-9) g/mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 3.6% for 1.0 x 10(-7) g/mL Hg2+ (n = 11). After pretreatment with sulphydryl cotton fibre, environmental water samples were analysed by the proposed method for total mercury determination with satisfactory results. The results were in good agreement with those given by hydride generation-cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-CVAAS).
