Abstract
Telerehabilitation is proposed as a promising avenue to enhance service accessibility for Indigenous communities, yet its application for Indigenous children remains relatively unexplored. This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR framework to explore current knowledge on the use of telerehabilitation for Indigenous children. Ten scholarly databases, seven grey literature databases, reference searches, and expert consultations were utilised to identify relevant studies. Included articles discussed the use of telerehabilitation provided by rehabilitation professionals (e.g. occupational therapist (OT), physical therapist (PT), speech and language pathologist (SLP) to Indigenous children and/or caregivers. Seven studies were included. Telerehabilitation was explored in different ways, the most common being real-time videoconferencing by SLPs. While some studies explicitly acknowledged cultural responsiveness within both the research process and the intervention, most were not designed for Indigenous children and their caregivers; rather, these participants were included with non-Indigenous participants. Successful implementation and sustainability of telerehabilitation services requires addressing technological limitations, understanding, and respecting diverse worldviews, and co-developing services to meet the unique needs of Indigenous families. Telerehabilitation has been rarely used with Indigenous children and when it was, little attention was given to cultural considerations. These findings emphasise that future telerehabilitation interventions should be truly community-led to ensure cultural relevance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurodevelopmental disorders are a set of disorders that negatively affect the acquisition of skills in a variety of developmental domains, including motor function, learning, socialization, language and cognition. However, there is no information available on the standard of living of Ethiopian primary caregivers of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the quality of life (QOL) and associated factors among primary caregivers of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted during 1-30 May 2022. Systematic random sampling was used to obtain 352 samples. QOL was measured using the WHO Quality of Life Brief. The gathered information was coded, entered into EpiData 4.6.0.2 and analyzed with SPSS version 26. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the correlates of QOL and the strength of the correlation was measured by β coefficient with 95% CI. RESULTS The mean score of the overall QOL was 62.61 with a SD of 5.17. The mean (±SD) scores for the physical health, psychological, environmental and social relationship domains of primary caregivers were 57.36±9.98, 66.98±9.39, 66.06±12.91 and 60.02±9.14, respectively. Age was significantly associated with physical domain (β=-0.25, 95% CI -0.43 to -0.07) and with environmental domain (β=-4.57, 95% CI -9.06 to -0.09). Being divorced/widowed was negatively associated with psychological health (β=-2.99, 95% CI -5.82 to -0.17) and social health (β=-0.62, 95% CI -1.33 to -0.10). The presence of medical illness was negatively associated with the physical health domain (β=-4.32, 95% CI -7.64 to -2.91) and the environmental domain (β=-3.11, 95% CI -5.71 to -0.51). Poor social support was negatively associated with psychological health (β=-3.25, 95% CI -5.89 to -0.61) and the social health domain (β=-3.39, 95% CI -11.3 to 4.6), and moderate social support (β=8.62, 95% CI 3.15 to 14.09) was positively associated with physical health. Depression (β=-6.32, 95% CI -11.96 to -0.67) and anxiety (β =-3.07, 95% CI -5.80 to -0.34) were negatively associated with physical health and the psychological health domain, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study indicate that all dimensions of QOL of primary caregivers of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders in this study setting were compromised. Being divorced or widowed, lack of formal education, age, average monthly income, poor social support, depression, anxiety and the presence of medical illness were factors associated with QOL in all domains. This requires integrating a bio-psychosocial perspective, a positive mental health strategy and pharmaceutical therapies to enhance QOL for caregivers of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to report on the mediator role of parenting stress in the effect of stigmatization on burnout in parents of children with autism. DESIGN AND METHODS A descriptive and correlational research design was used in this study. The sample consisted of 146 parents who had children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and volunteered to participate in the study. A "Personal Information Form", the "Parents' Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale", the "Parenting Stress Scale", and the "Parental Burnout Assessment" were used for data collection. RESULTS In the study, it was observed that the feeling of stigmatization increased as the education level increased and that variables such as the ages of the parent and the child and an increase in the number of children requiring care also affected the feeling of stigmatization. Parenting stress was found to have a "partial mediator" role in the effect of stigmatization on parental burnout. CONCLUSION Our findings emphasized the heterogeneous correlation between stigmatization, burnout, and stress levels of parents of children with autism. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This study has key implications for pediatric nursing practices. Pediatric nurses can educate the community about autism, what issues should be considered, and how to support parents. Furthermore, nurses can introduce parents who have children with autism to each other and direct them to parent-child activities that can regulate their moods.

Abstract
This study explored the coping experiences of mothers of children with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 mothers. The data were thematically analyzed to gain in-depth understanding of their coping experiences. The findings indicated that COVID-related restrictions disrupted the family routine and added a significant burden for the mothers as primary caregivers, and for the family system as a whole. Three distinct types of coping experiences arose from the analysis: surviving the crisis, controlling the crisis, and growing out of the crisis. Three key elements differentiated these three types: the perceptions of the meaning of the pandemic for parental roles and of the response of the education and welfare systems to the children's needs - in routine and during COVID-19; coping with the different pandemic challenges; and the implications of both COVID-19 and the mothers' coping strategies for the functional and emotional status of their children, themselves, and family relations. The results are discussed in light of models of family stress and coping, focusing on the tension between the mothers' caregiving role and maternal roles as warranting particular attention by professionals and policymakers.

Abstract
Families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities often face unique challenges that significantly impact their quality of life. Understanding the predictors of family quality of life (FQOL) is crucial for developing effective support systems and interventions. AIM This study investigated the predictors that might influence the perception of families having a member with a disability regarding their quality of life (FQOL). METHOD The sample consisted of 320 family members from the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. RESULTS The overall results showed that participants' satisfaction with FQOL was at a moderate level. Further results indicated that variables associated with severity, type of disability, and the mother's age and education were significant predictors of the FQOL. CONCLUSIONS These results emphasize the importance of considering the variables that impact FQOL, such as the severity and type of disability, and mother's related variables, when directing support to families with a member with a disability. The recommendations and limitations of the study were discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a group of rare musculoskeletal conditions that is associated with complex healthcare needs and long-term follow up. The literature reports significant direct, indirect, and psychosocial costs for caregivers of children with neuromuscular conditions. Due to mobility limitations and frequent hospital visits, caring for a child with AMC is complex. Other challenges experienced by caregivers include financial strain, job changes, changes in interpersonal relationships and abandonment. This study was aimed at exploring the lived experience of caregivers of children with AMC. METHODS The present study is part of a larger global mixed methods study. In the initial quantitative aspect of the study, caregivers (n = 158) of children and youths with AMC (aged 0-21 years) responded to a cost of care survey on an electronic platform. Of the 158 participants, 13 caregivers then further consented to participate in the qualitative aspect of the study in which a 60-min semi-structured, individual interview was conducted remotely. Open-ended questions were developed to gain a deeper understanding of the direct and indirect costs of care, their impact on the caregivers' lives and the quality of the care-giving experience. Interviews were transcribed, and a coding scheme was developed drawing from both the existing literature and the content of the interviews. A deductive and inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data using the NVivo® qualitative data analysis software. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Five themes describing the experiences of caregivers of children with AMC emerged from the analysis of the qualitative data: 1. Impact of the caregiving experience; 2. Cost of childcare; 3. Support system for care; 4. Managing and navigating care; 5. Supporting the child's growth and development. In addition to the results of the thematic analysis, specific recommendations shared by the caregivers included the need for support groups and provision of support to youths to prepare them for adolescence. These findings will inform resource allocation, policymaking, and support services for children with rare conditions, their caregivers and families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The EuroQol Health and Wellbeing Short Version (EQ-HWB-S) instrument has been developed to measure the health and wellbeing of care-recipients and their caregivers for use in economic evaluation.The EQ-HWB-S has nine items, and pilot UK preference weights have now been developed. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the validity of the instrument in parents of children with and without health conditions. METHODS EQ-HWB-S data were sourced from an Australian paediatric multi-instrument comparison study. We analysed the baseline characteristics and response distribution of the EQ-HWB-S items. Assessment of known-group validity was conducted for EQ-HWB-S items, level sum-scores and preference-weighted scores, including partial effects. Known-group analyses included three child health variables and where caregivers reported coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had impacted their wellbeing. We included analyses across gender, controlled for child and parent demographic variables, and compared scores across child health conditions. RESULTS Item responses were distributed as expected, with higher skew for mobility and activities. Parents experienced high levels of exhaustion. We detected significant differences between groups for level sum-scores and preference-weighted scores, as hypothesised; all tests were significant (p < 0.001), with moderate effect sizes (effect sizes were slightly higher for female than male parents). The regression analysis identified significantly different EQ-HWB-S scores for child health samples compared with the general population after controlling for demographic variables. Differences were observed between child health conditions. CONCLUSION The EQ-HWB-S is a useful instrument to measure parent quality of life for economic evaluation in this population. Data were limited to one time point; further research should investigate the instrument's sensitivity to change and test-retest reliability in this population.

Abstract
This study examines the intersection of early intervention and the role of women as primary caregivers for children with disabilities. Studies for this analysis were collected through a meticulous search in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. This process ensured the inclusion of a wide range of relevant literature from the field of study. A rigorous procedure of identification, selection, eligibility assessment, and inclusion of potentially relevant studies in this research area was conducted. We analyzed 130 articles, identifying 8 key research areas. Significant factors include the impact on parental interactions, communication skills, the role of women in developmental disabilities, mothers' understanding of their children's disabilities, emotional overload, parental stress, and psychological aspects. These factors significantly affect the well-being and development of mothers and children with disabilities. The study also considers the impact on women's careers. While research on psychological aspects and maternal overload is well-developed, establishing early intervention systems to optimize resources for proper child development is a challenge. The findings have high social value, paving the way for improving the quality of early childhood services.

Abstract
This study investigates the family well-being among Saudi Arabian families with youth who have an intellectual disability. A sample of 148 family members, including parents and other relatives, was surveyed on emotional well-being, family interactions, and parenting. This study aimed to explore the unique challenges and dynamics within these families, providing insights into how an intellectual disability in a youth affects the family unit. The research highlights a gap in understanding the specific impacts of intellectual disability on family life in the Saudi context. Key findings include variations in family quality of life perceptions among different family members, with fathers showing distinct levels of satisfaction. This study contributes to the development of culturally sensitive support strategies and policies, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to enhance the well-being of these families in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Raising a child with a developmental disability or physical health condition can have a major impact on the lives of their families, especially in low-income countries. We explored the impact on such families in Ethiopia. STUDY DESIGN A total of 241 child-caregiver dyads were recruited from two public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Of these, 139 children were diagnosed with a developmental disability (e.g. autism, intellectual disability) and 102 children with a physical health condition (e.g. malnutrition, severe HIV infection). The family quality of life was assessed using caregiver reports on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL-FIM™). The disability weight score, which is a Global Burden of Disease measure to quantify health loss, was estimated for each child. RESULTS Families with a child with a developmental disability reported lower quality of life than families caring for a child with a physical health condition (p < .001). Mean disability weight scores in children with a developmental disability were higher than in children with a physical health condition (p < .001), indicating more severe health loss. Disability weight scores were negatively associated with the family quality of life in the whole group (B=-16.8, SE=7.5, p = .026), but not in the stratified analyses. CONCLUSIONS Caring for a child with a developmental disability in Ethiopia is associated with a substantial reduction in the family quality of life. Scaling up support for these children in resource-limited contexts should be prioritized.

Abstract
Despite limited research, existing studies using generic quality of life (QOL) tools indicate decreased physical health and compromised emotional functioning in children with IF. This study investigates QOL in children with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and its determinants. The study included 57 pediatric patients with SBS treated at Mannheim's University Hospital between 1998 and 2014. To evaluate QOL, the KINDL questionnaire was used. Three age-specific questionnaire variants were employed, and parental proxy reports were collected. Most patients underwent intestinal lengthening procedures, with varying primary diagnoses. A comparison with healthy children from the patient's perspective revealed no difference but from the parent's perspective showed lower QOL in SBS patients, especially regarding physical and mental well-being. QOL varied with age, with 7-10-year-olds reporting the lowest scores. Several factors, including independence from parenteral nutrition and the presence of a complete colon, positively influenced QOL. The Bianchi technique for intestinal lengthening has also shown promise but needs further research. The observation sample in this study is too small to generalize about the whole population of SBS patients. However, this study shows that many health and treatment factors affect QOL, and a large multicenter study is necessary. Our findings underline the importance of appropriate psychological support for children with SBS and their families.

Abstract
Parents of children with congenital heart disease experience unique stressors that affect their psychological well-being and health-related quality of life. A parent's ability to cope effectively influences how they adjust to stressful situations. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the factors influencing HRQoL in parents of children with congenital heart disease under the lens of the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping framework to identify areas for intervention and future research. An integrative literature review was conducted by keyword search of online databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Medline from 2011 to 2022. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to search results and studies were assessed for quality using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. The initial search yielded 1026 unique papers, and 24 were included based on the predefined criteria. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping was applied to organize results and generate themes. Results showed a child's hospitalization is a time of uncertainty and distress for parents of children with congenital heart disease. Effective problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies can lead to reduced stress and improved health-related quality of life for parents. Additionally, multiple variables moderate the relationship between a parent's perceived stress and adjustment. Health care teams should focus on targeted education, faith, coping, and social support interventions. Further research is needed that examines the effect of mental health factors, cultural differences, and socioeconomic variables on the health-related quality of life of parents of children with congenital heart disease.

Abstract
Background Children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs, e.g., cerebral palsy) and their caregivers face lifelong and impactful challenges, particularly during life-transition periods such as adolescence. One's resilience emerges as an essential ability to navigate this vulnerable phase. Resilience is a complex concept that embeds multiple factors on various levels. Little is known about what resilience factors are pivotal in youth with NDDs and their families as they transition into adolescence and how these are addressed as part of existing targeted interventions. Objectives This review explored the concept of resilience in youth with NDDs and their families. Specific aims included describing salient resilience factors in adolescents with NDDs and their families and to describe how resilience is addressed as part of targeted interventions. Methods Using the Arskey and O'Malley framework, six steps were undertaken, including a comprehensive literature search (n = 5 databases), transparent study selection, detailed data extraction with a coding scheme (n = 46 factors), results' collating with numerical and inductive content analysis, and consultation with three key stakeholders. Results The study screened 1,191 publications, selecting fifty-eight (n = 58; n = 52 observational and n = 6 intervention) studies. Findings revealed that resilience in this context is closely linked to more than forty factors across four levels (individual; family; school/peers; and community). Pivotal factors include social and emotional competence, optimism, and family/peer relationships. While existing interventions targeting resilience show promising results, few programs are available and generalizable to different NDDs. Stakeholders highlighted the importance of addressing resilience factors that are not targeted in existing interventions: caregivers' self-efficacy and self-esteem, as well as youth's and caregiver's confidence. Preferences for and advantages of online delivery for support programs and individual/group features also emerged. Conclusion The review emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to support youth with NDDs and their families during adolescence transition. To enhance their resilience, recognizing caregivers' roles, customizing interventions, and exploring new implementation formats are avenues that align with the current evidence and opportunities for practical development in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children affected by tethered cord syndrome (TCS) encounter multifaceted challenges encompassing educational, familial and social spheres, underscoring the significance of a holistic comprehension of their subjective emotional well-being and life encounters. Nonetheless, healthcare professionals tend to prioritise the physical functionality of the afflicted individuals throughout the treatment and rehabilitation process, often neglecting the emotional experiences and requirements of these children as they transition into posthospitalization phases. AIM To advance the subjective experiences and perceptions of children with TCS upon reintegration into their families, educational institutions and wider societal contexts subsequent to their discharge from medical facilities. METHODS The study was conducted at the Children's Hospital in Zhejiang. Twelve children aged 8-15 with TCS were included in the study. The research design used an interpretative qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection method. Data analysis was performed using reflexive thematic analysis, facilitating a comprehensive exploration of emerging themes and patterns. RESULTS Four major themes (and seven subthemes) were identified from the findings: (1) growing pains (a shameful secret, distance between ideal and reality); (2) inappropriate expressions of familial affection (knowing is not understanding, unspeakable guilt); (3) social estrangement (uncomfortable distinctions, familiar stranger) and (4) striving for independence and consistency. CONCLUSIONS Children affected by TCS exhibit internal sensitivity and challenges in self-development, family dynamics and social interactions. They aspire to attain a future characterised by independence and freedom, akin to that of their typically developing peers. These findings can help health professionals, families and educators gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a child with TCS, and the findings can also serve as a platform for interventions that seek to promote self-expression in these children so that they can experience life as a meaningful and positive process. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study received support from children with TCS and their guardians during data collection, as well as from the head nurse of the unit. Coresearchers also contributed to design, data collection, analysis and writing.

Abstract
PURPOSE Parents of autistic individuals have been known to have a lower overall quality of life (QQL) than those of typically developing children. We present the first Hungarian large-sample study whose objective was to explore the differences in QOL between parents of autistic individuals (AS) and those of neurotypical (NT) persons. METHODS Based on the ABCX model we developed a questionnaire comprising standardized scales to characterize the life of parents involved. Our data came from parents of 842 individuals (ASD = 521, NT = 321) between 0 and 49 years. Battery deployed standardized instruments to examine quality of life (WHO-QQL BREF and Quality of Life in Autism questionnaire, QOLA). We assessed the families' socio-economic/demographic characteristics, parents' psychological well-being, the autistic/neurotypical individuals' characteristics, and the interventions. RESULTS Our data showed significantly lower QOL in parents of autistic individuals in all domains of questionnaires. We analyzed 20 relevant factors to uncover the predictors of parental QOL. We confirmed the existence of most but not all predictors present in earlier literature and identified intervention-related predictors. CONCLUSION Our study confirms the importance of supporting parents in their role, and of providing health and social supports that focus on quality of life, in addition to child care.

Abstract
There are conflicting reports of the level of physical activity (PA) and its relationship to quality of life (QoL) among caregivers of children with physical disabilities (CwPD). In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to compare the PA levels and QoL of two groups of caregivers - a CwPD group and caregivers of typically developing children (CwTD). We included 32 family caregivers in the CwPD group (22 women, 10 men; M age = 42.1, SD = 6.2 years) and 32 caregivers in the CwTD group (24 women, 8 men; M age = 42.3, SD = 6.1 years). We assessed PA with the International Physical Activity Scale-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) and self-reported activity diaries, and we assessed QoL with the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Although the IPAQ scores and sitting times of caregivers in these two groups were not statistically different (p > .05), many parameters of self-reported activity diary data and total energy expenditure were significantly higher in the CwPD than the CwTD group (p < .05, effect size = .53-1.10). The CwPD group reported a lower QoL according to the SF-36 and its sub-scores (p < .05, effect size = .54-.77), and higher PA levels than those in the CwTD group. In the CwPD group, moderate, vigorous, and total PA scores were mildly to moderately associated with the total Qol score, and many of its subscores (r = .36 to .60, p < .05). The lower quality of life observed in CwPD, despite high-intensity physical activity levels, suggested that investigators and care providers should consider QoL in the CwPD group to be multifactorial and that here is a need for caregiver interventions to enhance QoL in this underserved population.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the family support, anxiety, depression, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and their associations among parents and grandparents of children with disabilities. Methods This is a cross-sectional study and a total of 327 family caregivers were included. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and two independent t-test were used to identify the intergenerational differences in sociodemographic characteristics, received family support, anxiety, depression, and HRQoL. Eight generalized linear models were developed to examine the associations in both generations. Results Parents and grandparents were most in need of rehabilitation and financial support, but both populations received the least amount of financial support. 33.6% and 36.1% of family caregivers had the risk of anxiety and depression and found no significant intergenerational differences. As for HRQoL, intergenerational differences were found in the physical component score, but not found in the mental component score. Among parents, childcare support of respite care and household tasks assistance was negatively associated with their depression (p<0.05), professional support of appropriate surgery for children (p<0.05) and psychological support from professional psychologists (p<0.01) were negatively associated with their anxiety and depression, psychological support from relatives and friends was negatively associated with their depression (p<0.05) whereas was positively associated with their mental HRQoL (p<0.01). As for grandparents, financial support for daily living expenses was negatively associated with depression (p<0.05), and psychological support from families was negatively associated with depression (p<0.05) whereas was positively associated with mental HRQoL (p<0.05). However, no relationship was found between family support and anxiety among grandparents. Notably, no association was found between family support and physical HRQoL among both populations. Conclusion Both parents and grandparents had high risks of anxiety, depression and low levels of mental HRQoL. To efficiently improve psychological health, care providers and policymakers may consider intergenerational differences and provide targeted family support.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic and its demands of social distancing have created challenges in the lives of children/adolescents with developmental disabilities and their families, which would change aspects of children's functioning. The objetive of this study was to evaluate changes in some components of functioning of children/adolescents with disabilities following 4 months of social distancing during a period of high contamination rate in the year 2020 in Brazil. Participated 81 mothers of children/adolescents with disabilities, 3-17 years, most of them (80%) diagnosed with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder. Remote assessments of functioning' aspects including IPAQ, YC-PEM/ PEM-C, Social Support Scale and PedsQL V.4.0. Wilcoxon tests compared the measures, with significance level <0.05. No significant changes in participant's functioning were identified. Social adjustments required to facing the pandemic during two points in time in the midst of the pandemic did not change the evaluated aspects of functioning in our sample of Brazilian.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social support and Quality of life (QoL) are important aspects of life and should be explored during the specific scenario of the pandemic. AIMS (i) to compare the perceived social support (PSS) in caregivers and the domains of QoL of the caregiver and the child with developmental disabilities (DD) and typical development (TD); (ii) to verify the existence of the association, in each group, between the PSS, and the domain of QoL of the caregiver and the child. METHODS AND PROCEDURES 52 caregivers of children with DD and 34 with TD participated remotely. We assessed PSS (Social Support Scale), children's QoL (PedsQL-4.0-parent proxy) and caregivers' QoL (PedsQL-Family Impact Module). The groups were compared for the outcomes using the Mann-Whitney test, and Spearman's test evaluated the correlation between the PSS and the QoL (child and caregiver) in each of the groups. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS There was no difference between groups for PSS. Children with DD presented lower values in PedsQL total, psychosocial health, physical health, social activities, and school activity. Caregivers of children with TD presented lower values in PedsQL family total, physical capacity, emotional aspect, social aspect, daily activities, and higher value in communication. In the DD group, we found a positive relationship between PSS with child: Psychosocial Health (r = 0.350) and Emotional Aspect (r = 0.380), and with family: Total (r = 0.562), Physical Capacity (r = 0.402), Emotional Aspect (r = 0.492), Social Aspect (r = 0.606), Communication (r = 0.535), Concern (r = 0.303), Daily Activities (r = 0.394) and Family Relationships (r = 0.369). In the TD group, we found that PSS was positively associated with Family: Social Aspect (r = 0.472) and Communication (r = 0.431). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite both groups presenting similar PSS, there are important differences in QoL between them. For both groups, greater levels of perceived social support are associated with greater caregiver-reported in some domains of the child's and caregiver's QoL. These associations are more numerous, especially for the families of children with DD. This study provides a unique view into the relationships between perceived social support and QoL during the "natural experiment" of living through a pandemic.

Salud mental de cuidadores de niños con trastornos del neurodesarrollo durante la pandemia. NEUROLOGÍA ARGENTINA 2023. Abstract
Los cuidadores son especialmente propensos a verse más afectados psicológicamente durante las restricciones sociales y del sistema sanitario generadas por la pandemia por COVID-19. Los cuidadores de niños con trastornos del neurodesarrollo (es decir, autismo, discapacidad intelectual, déficit de atención, hiperactividad, discapacidad motora) tienen un papel más importante que los que acompañan niños sanos. Se diseñó un estudio cuantitativo transversal, utilizando técnicas estadísticas descriptivas, comparativas y correlacionales, para analizar la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud, el malestar emocional y la sobrecarga en cuatro subgrupos de cuidadores, clasificados según el diagnóstico del niño. Se incluyeron 132 cuidadores (86,4% mujeres). En el grupo 1 (discapacidad cognitiva) participaron 28 cuidadores; en el grupo 2 (TDAH) se incluyeron 51; en el grupo 3 (trastorno del espectro autista) participaron 33 cuidadores, y en el grupo 4 (discapacidad motora) se incluyeron 20. Los principales hallazgos de este estudio fueron: 1) alteraciones en el rol físico, el dolor corporal, la salud general y la vitalidad; 2) porcentajes muy bajos de sintomatología de depresión, ansiedad, estrés y sobrecarga; 3) diferencias en el funcionamiento social entre los grupos de discapacidad motora y TDAH, y en el estrés y la sobrecarga entre los grupos de autismo y discapacidad motora, y 4) correlaciones moderadas entre las dimensiones de dolor corporal y rol emocional y la depresión, la ansiedad, el estrés y la sobrecarga. Se concluyó que hay más afectación en variables asociadas con la salud física que con las de la salud mental.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Caregivers of persons with special needs (PSN) experience a variety of burdens and elevated levels of stress and anxiety throughout their lives, leading to a physical, psychological, emotional, social, and financial overload. This analytical study with a cross-sectional design and a quantitative approach aimed to appraise quality of life (QoL), reflecting the daily workload of informal family caregivers of PSN. METHODS Four structured, validated questionnaires were utilised: sociodemographic, WHOQOL-bref, Zarit Burden Interview, and Functional Independence Measure Scale in 60 anonymous volunteered respondents. RESULTS The informal caregivers were middle-aged mothers (81.7%), married (55%), stay-at-home spouses (60%) with high school degrees (51.6%), providing a care for their relatives with special needs for more than 20 years (41.8%). Most of the PSN were diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD, 61.8%), had a wide spectrum of intellectual deficits, and required constant support for their basic needs. They were mainly adolescent males without physical limitations (83.4%) on disorder-specific medications (90%). The study revealed that those caregivers had a median perception of QoL considering four essential domains, with a highest score recorded for the physical domain (64.3 +/- 16.1 SD). A moderate burden level prevailed, revealing neither a correlation between the workload expressed by caregivers and the patient's functional capacity, nor in the performance of daily self-care tasks (Spearman correlation test p > 0.05), apart from the environmental domain (mild correlation = 0.335, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The reported average level of overload associated with QoL of informal caregivers exists, affecting a vast proportion of the respondents. The absence of a direct association between workload and the functional capacity/daily self-care tasks can be related to the significant personal dedication of family caregivers, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Abstract
AIM To explore and describe caregiver role strain in caregivers of children living with disabilities. DESIGN This study used qualitative explorative, descriptive and contextual design. METHODS Eleven participants were purposively chosen from caregivers of children receiving help from the social and community development office. Data collection used semistructured interviews and data saturation occurred with the 11 participants. The data were analysed using content analysis process. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research Guidelines were used for reporting. RESULTS Four main themes were identified: caring for a child with disability affects the overall health of the caregiver; caring for children living with disabilities puts financial strain on the caregivers; caring for children living with disabilities has an impact on other roles; and strategies employed to cope with the strain of caring for a child living with disability.

Abstract
Introduction Caused by an error in cell division that produces an additional chromosome 21, Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common developmental disorders in the world. This study aims to analyze the relationship between psychological capital, quality of life and well-being of caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Methods The participants were 98 caregivers (mothers, M = 52.13, SD = 11.39) of individuals with Down syndrome. The instruments used were the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (measuring self-efficacy, resilience, optimism, and hope), Quality of Life Questionnaire (including social support, general satisfaction, physical/psychological health, absence of excessive workload/free time), and Psychological Wellbeing Scale, investigating the following dimensions: self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. Results The mediation analysis showed that self-efficacy, hope, and resilience are positively associated to quality of life, and optimism is positively associated to well-being. The total effects of psychological capital on well-being are positive and significant and quality of life mediates the relationship between psychological capital and well-being. Discussion These results show that psychological capital is an important inner resource for caregivers of DS individuals and must be improved through support services, so that caregivers have a higher perception of the quality of life and implicitly of well-being.

Abstract
PURPOSE Few available measures include culturally salient stressors and support systems for caregivers of offspring with disabilities in Asia. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a self-report measure that included relevant stressors and sources of support for caregivers of offspring with disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Open-ended interviews with eight caregivers in Singapore, along with existing measures were used to develop items. The original 34 items were administered to caregivers of offspring with disabilities in Singapore (n = 234, 85% mothers). Based on an examination of factor loadings, internal consistency, and feedback from professionals, the scale was revised and administered to 370 caregivers (78% mothers), along with other measures of stress, support, depression, and well-being. RESULTS Exploratory factor analysis of the original 34-item scale yielded two factors, Sources of Stress and Sources of Support. After scale revision, confirmatory factor analysis showed that a two-factor structure demonstrated a fair fit. The subscales showed adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and significant associations in expected directions with other measures of stress and support, as well as with depressive symptoms and well-being. CONCLUSIONS The measure has adequate reliability and validity, with implications for use by local service providers.Implications for rehabilitationCaregivers face unique challenges, such as stressors associated with caregiving, with varying support systems available to reduce the stress.A psychometrically-sound measure can be used to assess sources of stress and support, monitor services, and address service gaps for caregivers.The Sources of Caregiver Stress and Support Scale is a contextually-sensitive self-report measure for caregivers of people with disabilities in Singapore.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The number of children in special education schools has increased in Japan. This study aimed to examine the association between special education school enrollment and the health and social relationships of mothers with children in these schools using population-based samples in Japan. METHODS AND PROCEDURES This study used data from the Kochi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (K-CHILD) study in 2016. First, fifth, eighth, and eleventh-grade children in all schools in Kochi prefecture were included (n = 12,623). Associations between school type (regular or special education school) and maternal physical and mental health and social relationships were investigated by multivariate regression models. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS There were 134 children in special education schools (1.1 %) and 12,489 children in regular schools. Mothers of children in special education schools were more likely to have higher body mass index (BMI), poorer mental health and lower neighborhood relations score. Mothers of children in regular schools had higher BMI when their children had higher behavioral problems. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Mothers of children in special education schools are at risk of obesity, poor mental health, and having fewer social networks. Services and support should be expanded for caregivers based on their child's behavioral problems and school system.

Abstract
PURPOSE Family members are preferred providers of care for people with disability in India. Despite this, research which evaluates the impact of caregiving is limited. This qualitative study provides a comprehensive, in-depth exploration of the lived experience of carers who provide assistance to persons with a disability in Southwest India. METHODS In this qualitative study, 20 carers who assist persons with disability were purposively selected to undertake semi-structured interviews across a variety of domains. Data analysis was informed by Attride-Stirling's thematic network analysis. RESULTS Five global themes were identified which included; carers commitment to caring; concurrent demands of caregiving; mental and physical health of carers; networks and sources of non-financial support; and finances - strains and supports. CONCLUSIONS This study provides an in-depth exploration of the lived experience of carers in Kerala, India which will inform the future development of interventions to assist primary carers.Implications for rehabilitationFamily members are preferred providers of care for people with disability in India.By understanding the issues that affect carers who assist people with disability, it is possible to develop more effective, targeted, and sustainable interventions, that meet the needs of carers and alleviate some of their burden.Improving the health and wellbeing of carers needs to be urgently addressed in order to improve outcomes for those with disability - whom they care for.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the association between marital satisfaction and social activities with parents' self-perception. Self-perception included parents' sense of self and their attitudes and beliefs about who they are as individuals and as parents. Three hundred and twenty-seven parents, having either a child with (D1-target group) or without (D2-control group) a disability, were enrolled in the study. We hypothesized that self-perception of parents in the target group would be lower in all measures. We also hypothesized that low self-perception will correlate with parents' marital satisfaction and social activities. We found that parents of a child with disabilities reported significantly lower levels in all domains (self-perception, marital satisfaction and social activities) than parents of children without disabilities. Moreover, multigroup analyses confirmed that the structural paths between self-perception, marital satisfaction and social activities do not differ between D1 and D2 parents (χ2(127, N = 327) = 134.62, p>.05, CFI = 1.00 ≥ 0.90, RMSEA=.063 ≤ .080, SRMR = 0.054 < 0.08, TLI = 1.000 > 0.95). Results are discussed in terms of children's educational placement and their implications on children with and without disabilities unobstructed co-development and co-existence with their parents in the family context.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explored the related factors of FQOL in parents of children with ASD and examined whether social support mediates the relationship between parental self-efficacy and FQOL in parents of children with ASD. DESIGN AND METHODS Using a cross-sectional design, a total of 260 parents of children with ASD were recruited from September 2019 to November 2020. They completed the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale, the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, and the Social Support Rating Scale. RESULTS Parental self-efficacy and social support explained approximately 49.5% of the variance in FQOL. After controlling for the confounding influence of parents' education level, parental self-efficacy had a direct effect on FQOL (β = 0.292, SE = 0.108, P < 0.01) and an indirect effect on FQOL (β = 0.165, SE = 0.069, P < 0.01). Effects were mediated through social support, with partial mediating effects accounting for 36.11% of the total effect. CONCLUSIONS Both parental self-efficacy and social support are critical to promoting FQOL, and a partial mediating effect of social support was established. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Interventions for families with children with ASD should focus on enhancing parental self-efficacy, followed by a perceived social support and FQOL prompt.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Caregivers of children with disabilities often experience poor health. One way for caregivers to promote their own health may be to participate in physical activity (PA). AIMS The purpose of this study was to examine the association between PA and psychological and physical health problems in caregivers of children with disabilities. METHODS The 2018 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data were used, and 890 household representatives were identified as caregivers of children with disabilities. Based on the national PA guidelines, caregivers were classified into three groups: inactive (IA), aerobically active (AA), and aerobically and muscularly active (AMA). RESULTS Multivariable logistic regression indicated that the AMA group had a lower likelihood of reporting depression compared to the IA group (OR: 0.73 [95% confidence interval: 0.54, 0.98]). The AMA group also had a lower likelihood of reporting back pain and obesity compared to the IA group (OR:0.69 [95% confidence interval: 0.56, 0.84] and OR:0.63 [95% confidence interval: 0.52, 0.76], respectively). CONCLUSIONS The results of the current study suggest that caregivers of children with disabilities may benefit from PA, especially from the combination of aerobic and muscle-strengthening PA.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to translate and adapt the Feeding/Swallowing Impact Survey (FS-IS) into Brazilian Portuguese and provide a validated instrument for caregivers of children with feeding/swallowing disorders. This cross-cultural study involved initial translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, Committee of Experts, and pre-test. The sample consisted of 95 primary caregivers of children with feeding/swallowing disorders classified by Pediatric Dysphagia Evaluation Protocol (PDEP) in mild (n = 9), moderate-severe (n = 40), or profound (n = 46) dysphagia. Reliability and evidence of validity based on test content, response processes, internal structure and the relations to other variables were investigated. Internal consistency, test-retest, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were performed, in addition to the correlation with PedsQL™ Family Impact Module (PedsQLTMFIM). The pre-test participants did not report any difficulties in understanding the translated version. The Brazilian Portuguese version of FS-IS (Pt-Br-FS-IS) presented Cronbach's Alpha of 0.83, Exploratory Factor Analysis verified that the instrument would not be unifactorial (KMO = 0.74 and Bartlett's sphericity test p < 0.001) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis confirmed the original model in three subscales with χ2/df = 1.23, CFI = 0.92, TLI = 0.90, RMSEA (90% CI) 0.049 (0.011-0.073) adjustment indexes and the ICC was excellent in all subscales and total score. The correlation with PedsQL™FIM was significant in the total score and subscales. This study successfully translated and cross-culturally adapted the FS-IS instrument to the Brazilian Portuguese language and the investigation of its reliability and validity evidence suggests that the Pt-Br-FS-IS is a reliable and valid tool to measure the impact of feeding/swallowing disorders on the quality of life of caregivers of affected children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Kingston Caregiver Stress Scale (KCSS) was designed to measure stress in caregivers of people with dementia, but empirical studies have used this instrument to measure stress in caregivers of children and adults with disabilities, without investigating its psychometric properties. AIMS This study analysed the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the KCSS in Romanian caregivers of children and adults with disabilities. METHODS AND PROCEDURES A total of 276 familial caregivers of children and adults with various disabilities completed measures of caregiver stress and related concepts. After 3 months, 72 participants were retested. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS A new bifactorial model with eight items was compared against the originally proposed trifactorial model and a previously proposed bifactorial model with 10 items. The bifactorial eight-item model had the best fit indices (χ2 = 41.4, df = 19, p = .002, CFI = .981, TLI = .971, RMSEA = .065 [90 % CI = .038, .092]), along with good test-retest reliability and convergent, divergent, and predictive validity of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The KCSS is a reliable instrument for assessing caregiver stress among caregivers of children and adults with disabilities. Implications, limitations, and future research suggestions are discussed.

Abstract
Introduction Mild motor difficulties in children are underdiagnosed despite being highly prevalent, leaving such children often underserved and at higher risk for secondary consequences such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety. Evidence suggests that early patient-oriented interventions, coaching parents and providing children with early stimulation should be provided, even in the absence of a diagnosis. Such interventions may be effectively delivered via telerehabilitation. Methods and analysis A family-centred, pragmatic randomised controlled trial will be carried out to evaluate the real-world effectiveness of a Web-based Early intervention for Children using multimodAl REhabilitation (WECARE). Families of children with motor difficulties, 3–8 years of age, living in Quebec, Canada, and receiving no public rehabilitation services (n=118) will be asked to determine up to 12 performance goals, evaluated using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM, the primary outcome). Families will be randomised to receive either usual care or the WECARE intervention. The WECARE intervention will be delivered for 1 year via a web-based platform. Families will have access to videoconferences with an assigned rehabilitation therapist using a collaborative coaching approach, a private chat function, a forum open to all intervention arm participants and online resources pertaining to child development. Participants will be asked to re-evaluate the child’s COPM performance goals every 3 months up to 1 year post allocation. The COPM results will be analysed using a mixed Poisson regression model. Secondary outcomes include measures of the child’s functional ability, parental knowledge and skills and health-related quality of life, as well as qualitative outcomes pertaining to parental satisfaction and service delivery trajectories. Investigators and quantitative data analysts will be blinded to group allocation. Ethics and dissemination The CIUSSS de l’Estrie—CHUS ethics committee approved this trial (2020-3429). Study results will be communicated via peer-reviewed journal publications, conference presentations and stakeholder-specific knowledge transfer activities. Trial registration number NCT04254302.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal abnormality encountered by primary care physicians. The demands of families with DS children are significantly high with possible burdens on their primary caregivers. OBJECTIVE To assess the burden of DS children on their family primary caregivers and to identify the variables associated with caregiver burden. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Mansoura, Egypt from March 2019 to March 2020 including 457 family primary caregivers and their DS children. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected through direct interviews. Caregiver burden was assessed by Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-22) scale. The associations between categorical variables were tested using chi-square test, crude odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to detect the variables independently associated with caregiver burden. RESULTS More than half (51.9%) of caregivers had no or little burden, 40.7% had mild to moderate burden and 7.4% had moderate to severe burden. Female caregiving, single parent status and DS children of age less than 6 years old, female gender and having congenital heart diseases were the variables independently associated with mild to severe burden with adjusted odds ratios of 4.2, 2.5, 1.5, 2.1 and 1.7, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Less than half of family primary caregivers of DS children in Mansoura, Egypt suffered from mild to severe burden. Primary care physicians could recognize caregivers at risk of burden using ZBI-22 scale, and provide appropriate social, medical and psychological care for parents and DS children to mitigate this burden.

Abstract
Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of caregivers of children with disabilities (CWD) is important for both children's rehabilitation and caregivers' life, but the corresponding attention is far from enough in mainland China. Thus, we investigated the HRQOL of 170 caregivers and related factors in Shanghai. The 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) was used to measure HRQOL. The potential factors were collected, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression were performed to identify the key factors that could be intervened. Compared with the general population, caregivers of CWD had a slightly higher score on the physical component summary (PCS, 52.57 ± 8.41), but the score of mental component summary (MCS, 31.58 ± 7.72) was extremely low. Caregiver's illness condition, family size, and household income were significant factors of physical HRQOL. Caregivers with illness and caregivers living in an extended family were associated with higher mental HRQOL. Whereas these two factors had opposite effects on physical HRQOL. This finding indicated poor mental HRQOL among caregivers of CWD in Shanghai and thus requiring urgent attention and intervention. Improving physical fitness, maintaining family integration, and providing financial support should be considered when developing intervention for this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the impact on caregiver strain and family empowerment among caregivers of children with disabilities who received training and education as part of a family-centred community-based early intervention programme in South India. METHODS This prospective open cohort longitudinal study compared change from baseline to two years post-intervention among caregivers of the first cohort of children who were enrolled in the programme. Paired t-tests determined effect on the Modified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) and Family Empowerment Scale (FES), and p-values were adjusted for multiple comparisons using the False Discovery Rate approach. RESULTS Of the 308 caregivers (91% women), 44% provided care to children with cerebral palsy and 56% to children with other developmental delays. The mean age of the children at baseline was 3.3 (±1.5 years). The overall mean change from baseline in the FES was 4.1 (95% CI: 3.3, 4.9; p < 0.001) representing improved empowerment. The mean change for the MCSI score was -3.7 (95% CI: -4.5, -2.9; p < 0.001) representing reduced caregiver strain. Abstract
Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can cause neurological manifestations such as microcephaly. The aim of this study was to explore perceptions of ZIKV and mental health in women exposed to ZIKV during pregnancy in Colombia. This was a mixed-methods study based on structured interviews and psychological tests. Structured interviews were transcribed and analysed with Atlas Ti software. A grounded theory approach was applied. Quantitative analysis was performed with Statistical Package for Social Science, SPSS, V. 20. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universidad de Córdoba, Montería. Seventeen women participated in the study; nine of them were mothers of children with microcephaly. Maternal age ranged from 16 to 41 years old. The main themes discussed during interviews were: feelings, support, sources of information, and consequences on children's health. Women with children affected by microcephaly showed worse mental health compared to women with normocephalic children. Maternal mental health worsened after 24 months from giving birth. Perceptions regarding disease severity and lack of knowledge were considered to affect maternal mental health. Social support and spirituality were key determinants for caregivers. Future research is needed to further study coping mechanisms and mental health outcomes over time by affected populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of children with developmental disabilities experience greater stress and worse mental and physical health outcomes than parents of typically developing children. The use of various humor styles to cope with stressors has been associated with mental and, to a lesser extent, physical health outcomes in other populations, but has not been previously examined among parents of children with disabilities. AIMS To examine relations of adaptive vs. maladaptive humor styles with depression, daily affect, mental and physical functioning, somatic symptoms, and health behaviors, and to examine whether social support or positive reappraisal mediate relations of humor with health outcomes. METHOD 80 parents of children with disabilities completed online surveys at T1. 40 parents completed T2 surveys 4 months later. RESULTS As predicted, the adaptive humor styles - self-enhancing and affiliative - were associated with enhanced mental health outcomes, and these relations were mediated by social support and, to a lesser extent, positive reappraisal. Self-defeating humor was associated with worse mental health, greater symptoms, and worse health behavior; these relations were mediated by social support. CONCLUSION Adaptive humor use may facilitate caregivers' ability to garner support from others and reframe stressors, which ultimately may contribute to mental and physical resilience to stress.

Abstract
Background Caregivers of adolescents with mental health issues experience challenges that may result in the caregivers having a variety of unmet needs. There is a growing need to support these caregivers. Effective support to strengthen positive caregiving behavior in caregivers may address their challenges. Communication technologies offer novel opportunities to assist these caregivers and may contribute to strengthening caregiver behavior. However, little is known about the use of communication technologies among caregivers of adolescents with mental health issues. Objective The study aimed to answer the question: “What is the best evidence available to strengthen positive behavior of caregivers of adolescents with mental health issues using communication technology.” Methods A systematic review of articles published between January 2007 and August 2018 was conducted. Searches included articles of multiple study designs from EBSCO Host and Scopus platforms with prespecified eligibility criteria. Methodological quality was evaluated using the applicable Critical Appraisal Skills Programme and Joanna Briggs Institute assessment tools. Results The search yielded 1746 articles. Altogether, 5 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review for data synthesis. Data analysis and synthesis identified three thematic conclusions reflecting the types of communication technologies used, caregivers as the target population, and strengthening of positive behavior through determinants of the Integrated Model of Behavior Prediction. Conclusions The review reported the usefulness of communication technology by caregivers. Caregivers also demonstrated improvement in self-efficacy, knowledge, parent-child communication, and parental skills reflecting positive behavior. Although the use of communication technology is expanding as a supportive intervention to address caregivers’ needs, the evidence for usefulness among caregivers of adolescents with mental health issues is still scarce. More research and information related to preferred methods of communication delivery among caregivers of adolescents is still needed.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To report the views and experiences of fathers following their child's diagnosis of an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). BACKGROUND There is a growing interest in understanding the experiences of fathers of children with IDD given the transformation of the structural change of fathers' roles within the family and wider society. DESIGN A qualitative design was used to elicit the view and experiences of fathers. METHODS A total of ten Irish fathers participated in face-to-face interviews. The data were thematically analysed. The COREQ guidelines for reporting qualitative studies were used in the development of this paper. RESULTS The key themes that emerged were (a) the confirmation of the child's diagnosis (b) the impact of the diagnosis and (c) father's motivation to participate in disability research. CONCLUSIONS This study informs and develops a further understanding of the international evidence base of fathers receiving a confirmation of a child's diagnosis of an intellectual and developmental disability, the impact of the diagnosis on fathers and their motivation to share their stories to add to the disability research. Health and social care practitioners have important contributions to make in meeting the needs of fathers. There are specific areas to consider in terms of practice, education and research that require further attention and development to ensure fathers' distinct needs regarding their child's diagnosis of IDD are known and responded to effectively. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study highlights that when the child's disability is confirmed, fathers experience a diverse range of mixed emotions. Health and social care practitioners including nurses need to be aware of the impact of the diagnosis upon fathers. There is scope to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence of health and social care practitioners regarding the experiences of fathers and how they can further support fathers and their families during the critical time of a disability disclosure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to understand the influence of the religious beliefs on the decision of a group of women residing in the Huila Department to continue their pregnancies despite perinatal infection by the Zika virus. METHOD a focused ethnography. The participants were 21 women who had presented a perinatal infection by the Zika virus and whose babies were born with congenital microcephaly. 2 discussion groups and 6 semi-structured interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was used for data treatment. RESULTS three themes emerged, namely: "God, why me?" is the initial questioning of the women to God for the prenatal diagnosis of microcephaly in their babies, "Clinging to a divine miracle" describes how the women did not lose their faith and begged for a divine miracle for their babies to be born healthy, and "It was God's will" means acceptance, resignation, and respect for God's will, as well as the denial to abort despite the medical recommendations. CONCLUSION religiosity and religious beliefs were determinant factors in the women's decision to continue their pregnancies. It becomes necessary to continue investigating this theme to understand their experiences and to generate follow-up and support actions from nursing care.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the psychological well-being of primary caregivers of infants and toddlers with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS), and the roles of family resources, parenting stress, and coping strategies in caregivers' adaptation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Family caregivers (N = 50) of children with CZS who were receiving treatment at a rehabilitation hospital in Recife, Brazil participated a cross-sectional survey study. Caregivers completed measures of anxiety and depression, coping strategies, family resources, and parenting stress. RESULTS Mild to severe symptoms of depression were identified in 40% of caregivers and were a more prominent concern than symptoms of anxiety. Fewer family resources and high levels of parenting stress were significantly associated with both anxiety and depression. The association between parenting stress and depression was moderated by coping, such that parenting stress was associated with higher caregiver depression at low but not high levels of coping strategy use. CONCLUSIONS Practitioners in Brazil should consider the role of family coping and resources as important resilience promoting factors in the development of new programs designed to promote psychological adaptation in caregivers to children with CZS. It is recommended that caregiver mental health support services be integrated into existing early intervention programs targeting children with CZS.Implications for RehabilitationParents and other primary caregivers are encouraged to take an active role in the care and developmental monitoring of children born with CZS, but their ability to provide care may be compromised by difficulties in psychological adaptation.Moderate and severe symptoms of depression were more prominent in caregivers than moderate and severe symptoms of anxiety (20% versus 6%, respectively).Practitioners should include assessment of coping strategies, parenting stress and family resources conjointly with evaluation of symptoms of depression and anxiety as part of routine CZS family evaluations.A useful approach for caregivers in Brazil may be to more fully integrate caregiver mental health support services into existing early intervention programs for children with CZS.

Abstract
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic condition with multi-system involvement. The literature was reviewed to describe neurodevelopment and the behavioural phenotype, endocrine and metabolic disorders and respiratory and sleep functioning. Implications for child and family quality of life were explored. Challenging behaviours contribute to poorer well-being and quality of life for both the child and caregiver. Recent evidence indicates healthy outcomes of weight and height can be achieved with growth hormone therapy and dietary restriction and should be the current target for all individuals with PWS. Gaps in the literature included therapies to manage challenging behaviours, as well as understanding the effects of growth hormone on respiratory and sleep function. New knowledge regarding the transition of children and families from schooling and paediatric health services to employment, accommodation and adult health services is also needed. Developing a national population-based registry could address these knowledge gaps and inform advocacy for support services that improve the well-being of individuals with PWS and their families.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) and burden of primary caregivers of children and young adults (PCCYAs) with and without disabilities. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out with sample composed of 336 PCCYAs with cerebral palsy (CP; n = 84), Down syndrome (DS; n = 84), autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 84), and without disabilities (control group: CG n = 84), matched by gender and age. The burden of caregivers was assessed with the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), whereas QoL was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. RESULTS QoL and burden of CG presented better results compared to groups with disabilities, with the lowest environmental domain of all study groups (P <.001). The prevalence of burden was moderate for PCCAs of groups with disabilities. There was association between all WHOQOL-BREF and ZBI domains and variables age, schooling, occupation and per capita income (Spearman's correlation coefficient, P <.05). There is a negative impact on WHOQOL-BREF, with an increase in the level of burden of PCCAs with disabilities. CONCLUSION The majority of PCCYAs were unemployed married mothers, with low schooling and health problems. Older caregivers experience even higher burden and greater impact on QoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE We explored which shared aspects of social relations were considered important to the quality of life of persons between the ages of 10 and 40 years living with a disability. We examined how social relations were experienced as affecting quality of life and social participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen focus groups involving 48 persons with disabilities were conducted using photo elicitation, preference ranking and props. Focus group interviews were supplemented with seven individual interviews with individuals unable to participate in focus groups. All focus group interviews and individual interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and thematic data analysis was conducted. RESULTS We identified caregiving, dependency, and understanding as essential for quality of life. Acceptance from society, discrimination and prejudice, and the ability to participate in society were also highlighted as affecting quality of life. The use of social tactics to avoid confrontation with certain aspects of their disability was common among participants. CONCLUSIONS Across disabilities, caregiving, dependency, understanding and acceptance, and discrimination and prejudice were all important aspects for the quality of life of the individuals. Social relations were closely related to social participation, and the latter affected the quality of life of the participants. Social tactics were used to navigate social relations. Implications for rehabilitation We suggest to formalize the concept of social tactics and use it in patient education to enhance quality of life in individuals living with disabilities. People may accept and learn to cope with the impact of their disability, but how they maintain their social participation and social relations also impact on their quality of life. In their assessment, professionals working with individuals with disabilities should, therefore, give more priority to analyze the impact of social relations. When intervening, an effort to establish and maintain social relations should be considered along with psychological help, allocation of aids and economical support aiming to enhance quality of life and social participation among individuals with disabilities. When evaluating efforts to improve quality of life, it is important to investigate whether the intervention has improved the social relations.

Abstract
AIM To study the reliability and validity of the Carers of Older People in Europe (COPE) Index among caregivers of disabled people of different ages. METHODS A cross-sectional design of Finnish caregivers (n=1117). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed separately on samples of three different age groups, and the internal consistencies of the subscales were investigated. RESULTS Three factors were identified; Cronbach's alpha was 0.83-0.86 for negative impact and 0.77-0.78 for quality of support, indicating good internal consistency. The third factor, positive value, was less consistent across the age groups (α<0.66). CONCLUSIONS The COPE Index is a valid and reliable screening tool to measure negative impact and quality of support of caregivers of disabled people. Further research is needed to develop the COPE Index to more precisely measure positive value of the caregiving process.
