Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE It is unclear whether historically diagnosed "hybrid tumors" in patients with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) represent unique tumors or a hybrid between oncocytoma and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (Ch-RCC), and existing diagnostic criteria are ambiguous. We aimed to understand the spectrum of folliculin gene (FLCN) alterations, outcomes for BHD patients with kidney tumors, and the biology of FLCN-mutated tumors (FMTs) to refine diagnostic algorithms. METHODS Germline testing for FLCN alterations and outcomes for 20 BHD patients with 84 kidney tumors were evaluated. Renal tumors were profiled for histopathology and analyzed using a combination of next-generation sequencing, bulk/single-cell transcriptomic analysis, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). KEY FINDINGS AND LIMITATIONS Ninety unique germline FLCN variants in 234 unrelated families included rare deletion events (14/234, 6%), including those of the promoter region. Most patients (17/19, 90%) met the National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria for germline testing. Almost all cases represented indolent FMTs (n = 81), with metastases seen in two (of three) nonconventional renal cell carcinoma patients. FMTs showed a gene expression profile distinct from both oncocytoma and Ch-RCC characterized by four distinct L1CAM-/FOXI1+ and two L1CAM+/FOXI1- cell populations that showed GPNMB overexpression. IHC panels that include L1CAM, SOX9, and GPNMB can be a reliable screen for conventional FMTs. Limitations include the absence of external transcriptomic datasets to avoid batch effects. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Our results highlight the gaps in current clinical germline testing strategies for BHD, which should include promoter deletion events. Multimodal molecular profiling results can be translated into routine clinical practice using IHC biomarkers to improve the diagnosis of BHD and to separate indolent "conventional" FMTs from "nonconventional tumors," which may be clinically aggressive.

Abstract
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most prevalent among the urogenital cancers, accounts for around 3% of new cancer cases worldwide. Significantly, the incidence of RCC has doubled in developed world countries, ranking it as the sixth most common cancer in males, who represent two-thirds of RCC cases. Males with RCC exhibit a higher mortality rate and tend to develop a more aggressive form of the disease than females. Sex-related risk factors, including lifestyle and biological variations, explain this difference. The androgen receptor (AR) oncogenic signaling pathway has been extensively studied among the biological factors that affect RCC. Recent advancements in high-throughput RNA sequencing techniques have underscored the significant roles played by noncoding-RNAs (ncRNAs), previously dismissed as "junk". The oncogenic potential of AR is manifested through its dysregulation of the ncRNAs' availability and function, promoting RCC tumorigenesis. This review offers a summary of the most recent findings on the role and molecular mechanisms of the AR in dysregulating the ncRNAs that play a role in the progression of RCC and the possibility of utilizing ncRNAs to target AR as a potential therapeutic strategy.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) represents a rare autosomal dominant tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by skin lesions, lung cysts, and renal tumors. The predominant histological subtypes of BHD-related renal tumors include hybrid oncocytoma-chromophobe tumors, oncocytomas, and chromophobe renal cell carcinomas, all exhibiting eosinophilic/oncocytic features. Immunohistochemistry staining for KIT (CD117) and CK7 exhibits variability in these tumor types. Germline mutations in FLCN have been consistently identified. Generally, patients with BHD demonstrate a favorable prognosis with minimal metastatic potential. Nonetheless, the comprehensive elucidation of pathological characteristics of BHD remains incomplete, particularly in BHD-associated renal tumors that deviate from the previously identified subtypes, thereby complicating the differential diagnosis. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of BHD encompassing epidemiology, clinical manifestations, genetic and molecular pathogenesis, as well as clinical diagnostic modalities. Emphasis is placed on clinicopathological features, specifically focusing on BHD-associated renal tumors. Collectively, this review aims to present the latest insights into BHD which benefits in the early detection, therapeutic decision-making, and prognosis prediction in BHD cases, and deepen the understanding of sporadic renal tumors.

Abstract
In this comment, we highlight the diagnosis of Birt–Hogg–Dubé (BHD) in a 60-year-old man was made from identification and removal of normochromic papular cutaneous lesions whose histological examination indicated trichodyscomas and which are considered equivalent to fibrofolliculomas, presence of bilateral renal mass suggestive of angiomyolipomas by imaging exams. A benign/likely benign variant of FLCN in the intron 13 was also detected. Still, his previous pathological history presented other relevant data such as the prior removal of vocal cord angioma, total thyroidectomy, and left parotidectomy due to a cystic lesion whose histopathological examination revealed the presence of oncocytoma and lipomatosis, in addition to basal cell cutaneous carcinoma. Simultaneous gastrointestinal hyperplastic polyposis was found in this patient. The case we reported does not have the genotypic and phenotypic expressions most present in BHDS. These facts make it important for readers to know the clinical and genetic presentation facets of this unusual syndrome.

Abstract
The Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS) reviewed recent advances in renal neoplasia, particularly post-2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification, to provide an update on existing entities, including diagnostic criteria, molecular correlates, and updated nomenclature. Key prognostic features for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remain WHO/ISUP grade, AJCC/pTNM stage, coagulative necrosis, and rhabdoid and sarcomatoid differentiation. Accrual of subclonal genetic alterations in clear cell RCC including SETD2, PBRM1, BAP1, loss of chromosome 14q and 9p are associated with variable prognosis, patterns of metastasis, and vulnerability to therapies. Recent National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines increasingly adopt immunotherapeutic agents in advanced RCC, including RCC with rhabdoid and sarcomatoid changes. Papillary RCC subtyping is no longer recommended, as WHO/ISUP grade and tumor architecture better predict outcome. New papillary RCC variants/patterns include biphasic, solid, Warthin-like, and papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity. For tumors with 'borderline' features between oncocytoma and chromophobe RCC, a term "oncocytic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential, not further classified" is proposed. Clear cell papillary RCC may warrant reclassification as a tumor of low malignant potential. Tubulocystic RCC should only be diagnosed when morphologically pure. MiTF family translocation RCCs exhibit varied morphologic patterns and fusion partners. TFEB-amplified RCC occurs in older patients and is associated with more aggressive behavior. Acquired cystic disease (ACD) RCC-like cysts are likely precursors of ACD-RCC. The diagnosis of renal medullary carcinoma requires a negative SMARCB1 (INI-1) expression and sickle cell trait/disease. Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) can be distinguished from papillary RCC with overlapping morphology by losses of chromosomes 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, and 22. MTSCC with adverse histologic features shows frequent CDKN2A/2B (9p) deletions. BRAF mutations unify the metanephric family of tumors. The term "fumarate hydratase deficient RCC" ("FH-deficient RCC") is preferred over "hereditary leiomyomatosis and RCC syndrome-associated RCC". A low threshold for FH, 2SC, and SDHB immunohistochemistry is recommended in difficult to classify RCCs, particularly those with eosinophilic morphology, occurring in younger patients. Current evidence does not support existence of a unique tumor subtype occurring after chemotherapy/radiation in early childhood.

Abstract
Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) accounts for 5% to 7% of all renal cell carcinomas. It was thought for many years that ChRCC exhibits a hypodiploid genome. Recent studies using advanced molecular genetics techniques have shown more complex and heterogenous pattern with frequent chromosomal gains. Historically, multiple losses of chromosomes 1, 2, 6, 10, 13, 17, and 21 have been considered a genetic hallmark of ChRCC, both for classic and eosinophilic ChRCC variants. In the last 2 decades, multiple chromosomal gains in ChRCCs have also been documented, depicting a considerably broader genetic spectrum than previously thought. Studies of rare morphologic variants including ChRCC with pigmented microcystic adenomatoid/multicystic growth, ChRCC with neuroendocrine differentiation, ChRCC with papillary architecture, and renal oncocytoma-like variants also showed variable chromosomal numerical aberrations, including multiple losses (common), gains (less common), or chromosomal changes overlapping with renal oncocytoma. Although not the focus of the review, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data in ChRCC show TP53, PTEN, and CDKN2A to be the most mutated genes. Given the complexity of molecular genetic alterations in ChRCC, this review analyzed the existing published data, aiming to present a comprehensive up-to-date survey of the chromosomal abnormalities in classic ChRCC and its variants. The potential role of chromosomal numerical aberrations in the differential diagnostic evaluation may be limited, potentially owing to its high variability.

Application of Chromosome Microarray Analysis for the Differential Diagnosis of Low-grade Renal Cell Carcinoma With Clear Cell and Papillary Features. Abstract
Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) are the 2 most common RCCs. However, some RCCs can have both clear cell and papillary features, including clear cell papillary RCC (ccpRCC). They can be a diagnostic challenge in daily practice. Accurate diagnosis of these tumors is important for both patient prognosis and appropriate treatment. Fourteen RCCs with papillary architecture, clear cytoplasm and low Fuhrman grade were analyzed by SNP-based chromosome microarray (CMA). Seven cases had pathologic features of ccpRCC, and all had normal genomic profiles except one that had copy neutral loss of heterozygosity (cnLOH) of chromosome 3 and loss of one copy of the X chromosome. The remaining 7 cases also had papillae and clear cytoplasm. Two of these cases showed losses of chromosome 3 which are typically found in ccRCC. One had a gain of chromosome 7, which is commonly seen in pRCC. The remaining 4 had no alterations of chromosome 3 or 7. However, 3 of these 4 had monosomy 8, which are consistent with RCC with monosomy 8. The remaining case had no copy number alterations. This study shows that low-grade RCC with papillae and clear cell phenotype represents a heterogeneous group, including ccpRCC, ccRCC, pRCC, and RCC with monosomy 8. CMA analysis can be useful for the differential diagnosis of these neoplasms.

Abstract
Birt–Hogg–Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare inherited autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the tumour suppressor gene FLCN, encoding the protein folliculin. Its clinical expression typically includes multiple pulmonary cysts, recurrent spontaneous pneumothoraces, cutaneous fibrofolliculomas and renal tumours of various histological types. BHD has no sex predilection and tends to manifest in the third or fourth decade of life. Multiple bilateral pulmonary cysts are found on chest computed tomography in >80% of patients and more than half experience one or more episodes of pneumothorax. A family history of pneumothorax is an important clue, which suggests the diagnosis of BHD. Unlike other cystic lung diseases such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis and pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, BHD does not lead to progressive loss of lung function and chronic respiratory insufficiency. Renal tumours affect about 30% of patients during their lifetime, and can be multiple and recurrent. The diagnosis of BHD is based on a combination of genetic, clinical and/or skin histopathological criteria. Management mainly consists of early pleurodesis in the case of pneumothorax, periodic renal imaging for tumour detection, and diagnostic work-up in search of BHD in relatives of the index patient. Birt–Hogg–Dubé syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterised by multiple lung cysts, recurrent pneumothoraces, skin lesions and kidney tumours. AIMS Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in fumarate hydratase (FH). Affected families have an increased risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). HLRCC-associated RCC (HLRCC-RCC) is highly aggressive. Clinicopathological information of genetically diagnosed patients with HLRCC-RCC contributes to the establishment of effective therapies. METHODS Ten Japanese patients with HLRCC-RCC were enrolled in the study. Genetic testing for FH was carried out. Somatic mutations in FH and immunohistochemical analyses of FH and B7 family ligands (PD-L1 and B7-H3) were investigated in 13 tumours. Copy number variations were evaluated in two tumours. RESULTS All patients had FH germline mutations. Regarding histology, most tumours had type 2 papillary architecture or tubulocystic pattern or both. All tumours were FH deficient by immunohistochemistry. Ten tumours were positive for PD-L1, and 12 tumours were positive for B7-H3. Somatic mutation analysis demonstrated loss of heterozygosity of FH in 10 tumours. Copy number variation analysis revealed uniparental disomy between 1q24.2 and 1q44 encompassing FH; gain of chromosome 2 p was also common. All patients had either metastases or residual tumours. Three patients died of HLRCC-RCC and one of colon cancer, whereas the other six are currently alive, including two without recurrence. CONCLUSIONS HLRCC-RCCs appear to have unique molecular profiles, including PD-L1 expression. One patient had complete response to immunotherapy, which may be an option for HLRCC-RCC.

Abstract
Background Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by benign growth of the hair follicles, the presence of pulmonary cysts, spontaneous pneumothorax, and bilateral renal tumors that are usually hybrid oncocytic or multifocal chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. The diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of a pathogenic variant in the tumor suppressor folliculin (FLCN) gene mapped at 17p11.2. Although the dermatological lesions typical of BHDS are benign and only cause aesthetic concerns, and the pulmonary manifestations are controllable, the greater tendency of patients with this syndrome to present benign or malignant renal tumors, often bilateral and multifocal, makes the diagnosis of this syndrome important for the prognosis of the patients. The objective was to report the case of a patient with BHDS, without pulmonary manifestations and with hyperplastic polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract, and to perform a literature review. Case presentation A 60-year-old man complained of abdominal pain and diarrhoea for 2 months. Physical examination was normal except for the presence of normochromic papules in the frontal region of the face associated with hyperkeratotic and hyperchromic papules in the dorsal region. The excisional biopsies of the skin lesions indicated trichodiscomas. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, enteroscopy, and colonoscopy showed the presence of hyperplastic polyps in the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, colon, and rectum. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen revealed multiple expansive solid lesions in both kidneys, with necrotic and calcified areas. Renal magnetic resonance angiography also showed a solid lesion in the right kidney measuring 5 cm in diameter and another solid lesion in the left kidney measuring 8 cm in diameter, both suggestive of renal angiomyolipoma. CT scans of the skull, chest, and temporal bones were normal. The genetic study revealed the presence of a variant of FLCN in the intron 13. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of BHDS with the simultaneous finding of gastrointestinal hyperplastic polyposis, which may represent a possible phenotypic expression of this syndrome that has not yet been described.

Abstract
Birt‐Hogg‐Dubé (BHD) syndrome is associated with the development of hereditary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and is caused by a germline mutation in the folliculin gene. Most cases of BHD syndrome‐associated RCC (BHD‐RCC) are less aggressive than sporadic clear cell RCC and multifocal. Therefore, it is critical to distinguish BHD‐RCC from its sporadic counterparts to identify and monitor affected families and to preserve renal function for as long as possible. The World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathology consensus classification defined distinct entities for certain hereditary RCC; however, BHD‐RCC was not included in this classification. Although the clinical features and molecular mechanisms of BHD‐RCC have been investigated intensively over the last two decades, pathologists and urologists occasionally face difficulties in the diagnosis of BHD‐RCC that require genetic testing. Affected patients usually have miscellaneous benign disorders that often precede renal carcinogenesis. In the present review, we summarize the current understanding of the histopathological features of BHD‐RCC based on our epidemiological studies of Japanese families and a literature review. Pathological diagnostic clues and differential diagnosis of BHD‐RCC from other hereditary RCC are also briefly discussed.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD, also referred to as Hornstein-Knickenberg syndrome) is an autosomal dominant tumor syndrome caused by mutations in the FLCN gene located on chromosome 17. Depending on their age, patients with BHD may exhibit various clinical signs and symptoms. Disease severity can vary greatly among members of the same family. Early symptoms include basal lung cysts, which can lead to recurrent spontaneous pneumothoraces. The majority of patients (> 90 %) develop multiple fibrofolliculomas, especially on the face and upper trunk, in the second or third decade of life. Given the 12-34 % lifetime risk of developing benign or malignant renal tumors, targeted screening programs are prognostically crucial. While these renal tumors may belong to various histological subtypes, common variants include multifocal - sometimes bilateral - chromophobe and oncocytic hybrid tumors. Early diagnosis and adequate long-term care of families with BHD require interdisciplinary cooperation.

Abstract
A heightened understanding of hereditary renal cancer syndromes and their molecular basis has led to an increased awareness and recognition of these renal neoplasms by pathologists. Because a diagnosis of hereditary renal cell carcinoma has a profound impact on the patient and family members, when and how to raise such a suspicion via pathologic assessment has become an important yet very challenging task. This review discusses key clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and genetic characteristics of hereditary renal cancer syndromes, and important differential diagnostic challenges, emphasizing recent pathologic and molecular advances.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is a hereditary kidney cancer syndrome, which predisposes patients to develop kidney cancer, cutaneous fibrofolliculomas and pulmonary cysts. The responsible gene FLCN is a tumor suppressor for kidney cancer, which plays an important role in energy homeostasis through the regulation of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. However, the process by which FLCN-deficiency leads to renal tumorigenesis is unclear. In order to clarify molecular pathogenesis of BHD-associated kidney cancer, we conducted whole-exome sequencing analysis using next-generation sequencing technology as well as metabolite analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Whole-exome sequencing analysis of BHD-associated kidney cancer revealed that copy number variations of BHD-associated kidney cancer are considerably different from those already reported in sporadic cases. In somatic variant analysis, very few variants were commonly observed in BHD-associated kidney cancer; however, variants in chromatin remodeling genes were frequently observed in BHD-associated kidney cancer (17/29 tumors, 59%). Metabolite analysis of BHD-associated kidney cancer revealed metabolic reprogramming toward upregulated redox regulation which may neutralize reactive oxygen species potentially produced from mitochondria with increased respiratory capacity under FLCN-deficiency. BHD-associated kidney cancer displays unique molecular characteristics that are completely different from sporadic kidney cancer, providing mechanistic insight into tumorigenesis under FLCN-deficiency as well as a foundation for development of novel therapeutics for kidney cancer.

Abstract
Hereditary renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) are life-threatening disorders not only for the patients but also for their relatives. Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the folliculin gene (FLCN). The protein product, FLCN, functions as a tumor suppressor, and the affected patients have high risks of developing multiple RCCs. The carcinogenic mechanisms stemming from FLCN dysfunction have been investigated using rodent models and human RCC tissues. However, very limited information has been available about in vitro signaling of human renal cells with genetically mutant FLCN. Herein, we established a new cell line, BHD-F59RSVT, from a BHD patient's chromophobe RCC by transfecting SV40 large T antigen. We investigated FLCN mutations, chromosome profiles, and cytopathologic characteristics of the cell line. BHD-F59RSVT reflected the patient's FLCN germline mutation, a 3-nt deletion in exon 13 (c.1528_1530delGAG). Neither somatic mutation nor loss of heterozygosity of FLCN was detectable. Chromosome 17p11.2 of the FLCN proximal region demonstrated a trimodal pattern. Genome-wide chromosomal analysis revealed a loss of chromosome 16 and mosaic segmental gains in chromosome 7. BHD-F59RSVT cells were positive when immunostained for cytokeratin 7, supporting their origin from distal convoluted tubules. Western blotting analysis demonstrated severely suppressed FLCN expression at the protein level. The collective findings indicate that the established cell line will be suitable for functional analysis of the typical phenotype of BHD-associated RCC with suppressed FLCN expression.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts and renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). The affected individuals inherit germline mutations in the folliculin gene (FLCN). We investigated the mutation spectrum and clinicopathologic findings of 312 patients from 120 different families (119 Japanese and 1 Taiwanese). A total of 31 different FLCN sequence variants were identified. The majority were c.1285dupC (n = 34), c.1533_1536delGATG (n = 25), and c.1347_1353dupCCACCCT (n = 19). Almost all patients presented with pulmonary cysts. The incidence of RCCs in FLCN mutation carriers over the age of 40 was 34.8% (40/115). Fifty-five RCC lesions were surgically resected; most were either chromophobe RCC (n = 24; 43.6%) or hybrid oncocytic/chromophobe tumors (19; 34.5%). Seventy-six of 156 FLCN mutation carriers (120 probands and 36 sibs, 48.7%) had skin papules; however, cutaneous manifestations were so subtle that only one patient voluntarily consulted dermatologists. Japanese Asian BHD families have three FLCN mutational hotspots. Recurrent episodes of pneumothoraces are the major symptoms suggestive of a BHD diagnosis in our cohort. Characteristic features of lung and kidney lesions may be more informative than fibrofolliculomas as diagnostic criteria for BHD in the Japanese Asian population.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is an inherited disorder caused by genetic mutations in the folliculin (FLCN) gene. Individuals with BHD have multiple pulmonary cysts and are at a high risk for developing renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). Currently, little information is available about whether pulmonary cysts are absolutely benign or if the lungs are at an increased risk for developing neoplasms. Herein, we describe 14 pulmonary neoplastic lesions in 7 patients with BHD. All patients were confirmed to have germline FLCN mutations. Neoplasm histologies included adenocarcinoma in situ (n = 2), minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (n = 1), papillary adenocarcinoma (n = 1), micropapillary adenocarcinoma (n = 1), atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (n = 8), and micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia (MPH)-like lesion (n = 1). Five of the six adenocarcinoma/MPH-like lesions (83.3%) demonstrated a loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of FLCN. All of these lesions lacked mutant alleles and preserved wild-type alleles. Three invasive adenocarcinomas possessed additional somatic events: 2 had a somatic mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor gene (EGFR) and another had a somatic mutation in KRAS. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that most of the lesions were immunostained for phospho-mammalian target of rapamycin (p-mTOR) and phospho-S6. Collective data indicated that pulmonary neoplasms of peripheral adenocarcinomatous lineage in BHD patients frequently exhibit LOH of FLCN with mTOR pathway signaling. Additional driver gene mutations were detected only in invasive cases, suggesting that FLCN LOH may be an underlying abnormality that cooperates with major driver gene mutations in the progression of pulmonary adenocarcinomas in BHD patients.

Abstract
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a familial disorder associated with a germline mutation of FLCN that is a tumor suppressor gene. Patients with BHD have high risks for developing multiple renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). The frequent histological types are hybrid oncocytic/chromophobe tumors (HOCTs) and chromophobe RCCs. The morphology of HOCTs could alert pathologists to the possibility of BHD. On the other hand, chromophobe RCCs occurring in BHD patients demonstrate positive immunostaining for cytokeratin-7, CD82, and Ksp-cadherin similar to their sporadic counterparts. Highly reliable markers for BHD-associated chromophobe RCCs have not been identified. In the present study, we analyzed the state of chromosome 17 in 18 renal tumors composed of 8 chromophobe RCCs, 7 HOCTs, and 3 papillary RCCs obtained from BHD patients using fluorescent and chromogenic in situ hybridization probes for the centromeric region of chromosome 17 long arm. All chromophobe RCCs and HOCTs were disomic except for 1 chromophobe RCC that showed monosomy. On the other hand, 12 of 14 sporadic chromophobe RCCs were monosomic (P = .0008). The state of chromosomes 2 and 6 were also statistically different (P = .0074 and P = .0007, respectively). Three BHD-associated papillary RCCs demonstrated either trisomy (n = 2) or disomy (n = 1). Three of 5 sporadic papillary RCCs showed trisomy. The results indicate that fluorescent and chromogenic in situ hybridization of the centromeric region of chromosome 17 long arm should be a potent useful marker for chromophobe RCCs in patients who have not been diagnosed with BHD and thereby help to determine whether the cases should be considered for genetic testing.
