Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have long been overshadowed by gold NPs' success in sensor and point-of-care (POC) applications. However, their unique physical, (electro)chemical, and optical properties make them excellently suited for such use, as long as their inherent higher instability toward oxidation is controlled. Recent advances in this field provide novel strategies that demonstrate that the AgNPs' inherent capabilities improve sensor performance and enable the specific detection of analytes at low concentrations. We provide an overview of these advances by focusing on the nanosized Ag (in the range of 1-100 nm) properties with emphasis on optical and electrochemical biosensors. Furthermore, we critically assess their potential for point-of-care sensors discussing advantages as well as limitations for each detection technique. We can conclude that, indeed, strategies using AgNP are ready for sensitive POC applications; however, research focusing on the simplification of assay procedures is direly needed for AgNPs to make the successful jump into actual applications.

Abstract
Despite the popular use of citrate for the reduction of silver ions, this process suffers from slow crystal growth and broad size distribution. The rapid and effective synthesis of highly concentrated and stable spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) confined in the surfactant-rich phase of thermoresponsive 3-(alkyldimethylammonio)-propyl sulfate surfactants obtained after reaction with citrate ions at high temperature is described. The present approach using the zwitterionic surfactant offers an alternative rapid approach for production of AgNPs and an in situ phase separation step that serves to "extract" and concentrate the AgNPs in the surfactant-rich phase. Almost all (synthetic yield 99.9%, extraction efficiency 98.6%) of the synthesized AgNPs with a diameter of 21.0 ± 2.5 nm were incorporated into the phase-separated surfactant-rich phase at pH 11, and the capacity (maximum concentration) was 3.4 × 1013 particles/mL. The AgNPs were stable upon long-term storage (at least 3 months).

Abstract
A heterostructured Schiff base ligand (Benzildiethylenetriamine)-Silver-Guar gum encapsulated nanocomposites was intended to prepare by simple sonication assisted reflux method. Appropriate composition of purified guar gum, Schiff base ligand and silver nitrate were used for the synthesis. The synthesised nanocomposites were characterised by photoluminescence spectrum, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The crystalline peaks of XRD and FTIR reveals that Schiff base ligand and guar gum forms metal-organic matrix. Morphology studies have confirmed the organic framework structure and metallic silver nanoparticles are embedded on the organic framework. The efficiency of nanocomposites depends on adsorption capacity and silver nanoparticles that are encapsulated thereby increasing the visible light absorption through surface plasma resonance. The nanocomposite was proved to be highly selective in hydrogenation reaction which favoured the formation of aniline from nitrobenzene as single product with short reaction time and 90% conversion.

Abstract
This study reports a facile and ecofriendly approach for the ultrasound assisted synthesis of silver and iron oxide nanoparticles and their enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The fenugreek seed extract was used as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscopy results showed that nanoparticles synthesized by ultrasonication have a smaller size (~20 nm) as compared to the nanoparticles fabricated by magnetic stirring (~40 nm). The color change of the solution from milky white to brown suggested the formation of silver nanoparticles which was confirmed by the presence of an absorbance peak at 396 nm. The results of powder X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the crystallinity and elements present in nanoparticles synthesized using fenugreek seed extract. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that the fenugreek seed phytochemicals were coated on the nanoparticle surface. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed the thermal degradation and stability of nanoparticles. Magnetization study of iron oxide nanoparticles confirmed the superparamagnetic nature. The silver nanoparticles showed antibacterial activities against both gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, while no antibacterial activities were observed for iron oxide nanoparticles. The ultrasound assisted nanoparticles showed higher stability and antibacterial and antioxidant activity compared with the nanoparticles fabricated by magnetic stirring.

Abstract
Contrast to the polydisperse nanorods formed by common seed-mediated growth method without the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in seed solution, we successfully obtained silver nanoparticles with different morphologies in the same reaction system by addition of CTAB in the seed solution. In this work, an appropriate amount of CTAB was added into the solution to prepare silver seed crystals. The results show that the aging time of silver seeds have a great influence on the sizes and morphologies of silver nanoparticles and thus the shape-controllable silver nanoparticles can be easily achieved by simply changing the seed aging time. The results also support that the selective adsorption ability or adsorption behavior of TSC can be adjusted by adding CTAB in the preparation procedure of silver seeds. We suggest that different aging times generate different effects on the competitive adsorption between CTAB and citrate to induce the orientation growth of silver seeds. As a result, silver nanospheres, nanorods, and triangular nanoplates can be easily prepared in the same system. In addition, we overcome the time limitation about the use of the seeds by adding CTAB into seed solution and make the synthesis of silver or other metal nanoparticles with different morphologies more easily and more efficiently.

Abstract
We report on a reverse microemulsion method for the synthesis of silver nanocrystals and examine their antibacterial activities. As the molar ratio of water to sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) increases to 25, a morphology transition from a sphere-like nanocrystal to a wire-like one was observed. For both the gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, the wire-like silver nanocrystal showed higher antibacterial activities. We conclude that the morphology of silver nanocrystals dominates their antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Novel l‑Arginine‑Dextran70 based-silver nanoparticles (SNPs) (SNPsArg), functionalized with Riboflavin (RF) and Human Serum Albumin (HSA) were characterized by UV-Vis absorption, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy, chemiluminescence and Neutral red assays. TEM analysis showed the formed faceted particles, large clumps/fused aggregates, nano-featured with the mean particle size of 41.60 nm. Chemiluminescence and Neutral red assays for in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the SNPsArg/RF/HSA systems have been studied. It was pointed out that SNPsArg functionalized with RF and HSA resulted in a bio-nanosystem which leads to a high activity against oxygen free radicals, altered viability, morphology, apoptotic bodies and decreased cell density of L929 fibroblast cells. Results are relevant for understanding the redox properties of RF in the case of biological applications and especially for RF containing drugs.

Abstract
Very narrow and pure silver nanoparticles were synthesized by modified thermal treatment method via oxygen and nitrogen flow in succession. The structural and optical properties of the calcined silver nanoparticles at 600°C with diverse Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations varied from 2% to 4% were studied by means of different techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the production of pure Ag nanoparticles at a given Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentration. The X-ray powder diffraction spectra are evidence for the transformation of the amorphous sample at 30°C to the cubic crystalline nanostructures at the calcination temperatures for all Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations. The transmission electron microscopy images showed the creation of spherical silver nanoparticles with the average particle size decreased by increasing Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations from 4.61 nm at 2% to 2.49 nm at 4% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone). The optical properties were investigated by means of UV-vis absorption spectrophotometer, which showed an increase in the conduction band of Ag nanoparticles with increasing Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations from 2.83 eV at 2% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) to 2.94 eV at 4% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) due to decreasing particle size. This was due to less attraction between conduction electrons and metal ions for smaller particle size corresponding to fewer atoms that made up the metal nanoparticles.

Abstract
We describe herein the significance of a sodium citrate and tannic acid mixture in the synthesis of spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Monodisperse AgNPs were synthesized via reduction of silver nitrate using a mixture of two chemical agents: sodium citrate and tannic acid. The shape, size and size distribution of silver particles were determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Special attention is given to understanding and experimentally confirming the exact role of the reagents (sodium citrate and tannic acid present in the reaction mixture) in AgNP synthesis. The oxidation and reduction potentials of silver, tannic acid and sodium citrate in their mixtures were determined using cyclic voltammetry. Possible structures of tannic acid and its adducts with citric acid were investigated in aqueous solution by performing computer simulations in conjunction with the semi-empirical PM7 method. The lowest energy structures found from the preliminary conformational search are shown, and the strength of the interaction between the two molecules was calculated. The compounds present on the surface of the AgNPs were identified using FT-IR spectroscopy, and the results are compared with the IR spectrum of tannic acid theoretically calculated using PM6 and PM7 methods. The obtained results clearly indicate that the combined use of sodium citrate and tannic acid produces monodisperse spherical AgNPs, as it allows control of the nucleation, growth and stabilization of the synthesis process. Abstract
Green synthesis has gained a wide recognition as clean synthesis technique in the recent years. In the present investigation, silver nanoparticles were prepared by a novel green synthesis technique using Mangifera indica (Mango leaves) and found to be successfully used in dental applications. The prepared samples were spectroscopically characterized by XRD, PSA, SEM with EDS, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The crystalline size and lattice strain were analyzed from the XRD data which were counter-verified by W-H plots and particle size analyzer. The XRD peaks revealed that average crystalline size of the as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles was of 32.4 nm with face-centered cubic structure. This was counter-verified by particle size analyzer and Williamson-Hall plots and found to be 31.7 and 33.21 nm in the former and latter, and the crystalline size of Ag NPs could be concluded as 32 ± 2 nm. The morphological structure of the prepared sample was studied through SEM images and the chemical composition was analyzed by the EDS data. The band energy was calculated as 393 nm from UV-Vis, which confirmed the synthesized sample as Ag nanoparticles. To improve the mechanical bonding and hardness of the dentally used glass ionomer cement (GIC), the synthesized silver nanoparticles were incorporated into GIC in 2% weight ratio. The morphology of the prepared specimens was studied using optical microscope images. Vickers microhardness and Monsanto hardness tests were performed on GIC, GIC reinforced with microsilver particles and GIC reinforced with nanosilver particles and the latter derived a promising results. The results of the Monsanto tests confirmed the increase in hardness of the GIC reinforced with AgNps as 14.2 kg/cm2 compared to conventional GIC and GIC reinforced with silver microparticle as 11.7 and 9.5 kg/cm2. Similarly the Vickers hardness results exhibited the enhanced hardness of GIC-reinforced AgNps as 82 VHN compared to GIC as 54 and GIC-reinforced silver microparticles as 61 VHN. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs was tested by a well-diffusion method on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, and the obtained results exhibited a promising antibacterial activity of the as-synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract
The current work presents a one-step procedure for the synthesis of amphiphilic silver nanoparticles suitable for production of silver-filled polymeric materials. This solvent free synthesis via reduction of Tollens' reagent as silver precursor in melts of amphiphilic polyesters consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) blocks and hydrophobic alkyl chains allows the production of silver nanoparticles without any by-product formation. This makes them especially interesting for the production of medical devices with antimicrobial properties. In this article the influences of the chain length of the hydrophobic block in the amphiphilic polyesters and the process temperature on the particle size distribution (PSD) and the stability of the particles against agglomeration are discussed. According to the results of spectroscopic and viscosimetric investigations the silver precursor is reduced to elemental silver nanoparticles by a single electron transfer process from the poly(ethylene glycol) chain to the silver ion.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Synthesis of nanosized particles with antibacterial properties is of great interest in the development of new pharmaceutical products. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are known to have inhibitory and bactericidal effects. In this article we present the synthesis of Ag NPs prepared by chemical reduction from aqueous solutions of silver nitrate, containing a mixture of hydrazine hydrate and sodium citrate as reductants and sodium dodecyl sulfate as a stabilizer. The results of the characterization of the Ag NPs show agglomerates of grains with a narrow size distribution (from 40 to 60 nm), whereas the radii of the individual particles are between 10 and 20 nm. Finally, the antibacterial activity was measured by the Kirby-Bauer method. The results showed reasonable bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The standard dilution micromethod, determining the minimum inhibitory concentration leading to inhibition of bacterial growth, is still under way. Preliminary results have been obtained. FROM THE CLINICAL EDITOR In this paper the synthesis of Ag NPs via chemical reduction from aqueous solutions is discussed. Reasonable bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus was demonstrated.

Abstract
Colloidal silver nanoparticles were synthesized in AOT microemulsions. The effects of the precursors' concentration and the molar ratios of water to AOT on the particle size and size distribution were investigated. UV-vis spectra showed that the Ag+4 intermediates formed at low N2H4 concentration. TEM micrographs confirmed that the silver nanoparticles are all spherical with mean diameters in the range 2-5 nm and have a narrow size distribution. Not only the particle size but also the size distribution was increasing with the W value. The silver colloid has favorable stability and can be preserved for a long time without precipitation.
