Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses on the frontlines of the pandemic have increased workloads, burnout, and virus exposure, leading to mental health challenges and a lack of resources for patient care. Mental health support for nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak has become a priority. This study evaluated psychological health outcomes of among nurses during the 2022-2023 COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan, focusing on personal and work-related fatigue as key contributors to emotional distress. METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire was distributed to 200 nurses in a southern Taiwan hospital between 2022 and 2023. Emotional distress and mental health were assessed using the BSRS-5 (Brief Symptom Rating Scale) and CHQ-12 (Chinese Health Questionnaire). Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to identify factors influencing emotional distress and mental health outcomes. RESULTS Nurses aged 40-59 (52.85, p = 0.01), those in emergency departments (56.71, p = 0.001), and those caring for COVID-19 patients (50, p = 0.007) reported higher personal exhaustion. Significant differences in work-related fatigue levels were observed based on working environments (52.78, p < 0.001), no beliefs regarding religion (46.53, p = 0.036), care for COVID-19 patients (47, p < 0.001) and previously diagnosed with COVID-19 (46.58, p = 0.005). Key factors influencing emotional distress included marital status, number of children, and workplace (p < 0.05), while mental health variations were noted in age, marital status, number of children, workplace, and years of experience (p < 0.05). During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses' emotional distress and mental health were significantly correlated with specific stressors such as age, workplace, care for confirmed COVID-19 patients, and previous COVID-19 diagnoses (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT This study highlights the stressors affecting nurses' mental health during the 2022-2023 COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need for stress-specific mental health support. Understanding these stress-specific factors is important for figuring out what nurses need to improve their mental health, which can lead to better care for patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES to analyze how symbolic relationships established by healthcare professionals were expressed in their work during the pandemic. METHODS This qualitative study was conducted through an online survey. Participants were healthcare professionals working in the state of Rio de Janeiro, recruited between 07/20 and 09/30/2020. Data were processed using IRaMuTeQ software and discussed in light of Bourdieu's concepts. RESULTS healthcare professionals experienced feelings such as fear, exhaustion, devaluation, stress, and burnout. They developed skills to confront SARS-CoV-2 but suffered from symbolic violence, often imperceptible yet real. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of healthcare professionals could have been mitigated with mechanisms to protect physical and mental health, in addition to guaranteeing labor rights and working conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The detrimental impacts of COVID-19 on the mental well-being of frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) have been well studied. However, the long-term trajectory of their mental well-being remains relatively unexplored. We examined the magnitude and predictors of the psychological impact of COVID-19 on frontline HCWs during the transition into the "new normal" phase. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was performed on frontline HCWs at two largest designated COVID-19 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City between May and November 2022. A self-administered questionnaire captured participants' demographic characteristics and psychological distress including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine factors associated with psychological distress. RESULTS Among 462 HCWs, 85.3% self-reported having good, very good, or excellent mental health before their COVID-19 deployment, compared to 40.7% during the deployment and 55.6% at the time of the study. The prevalence of moderate-to-severe depression was 26.8%, anxiety (20.8%), insomnia (23.4%), and overall psychological distress (73.2%). Predictors for depression included pre-existing physical (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.09, 95%CI 1.03-4.22, P = 0.04) and mental health (aOR = 3.59, 95%CI 1.31-9.84, P = 0.01) conditions and being deployed during the 3rd (aOR = 6.28, 95%CI 1.12-35.08, P = 0.04) and 4th (aOR = 5.01, 95%CI 1.08-23.16, P = 0.04) COVID-19 wave. Those with mental health conditions before the deployment (aOR = 3.95, 95%CI 1.42-11.0, P = 0.008) were more likely to report anxiety symptoms. Predictors for insomnia included physical health conditions before the deployment (aOR = 2.73, 95%CI 1.37-5.44, P = 0.004), working at field hospitals (aOR = 2.44, 95%CI 1.43-4.16, P = 0.001), and currently being deployed to respond to COVID-19 (aOR = 0.35, 95%CI 0.19-0.67, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Given the substantial impact of COVID-19 deployment on HCWs' long-term mental well-being, comprehensive mental health support strategies are urgently needed. As HCWs may overlook their mental health issues, a screening program with psychological support services should accompany them early in future pandemics. Further nationwide studies with longer follow-ups are necessary to understand the full extent of psychological distress among frontline HCWs in Vietnam.

Abstract
BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated job pressure and risks for healthcare workers (HCWs), who have a significantly higher prevalence of COVID-19 than the general population. The study examines the work-related stressors encountered by healthcare professionals treating COVID-19 patients, focusing on potential variations based on personal and work-related variables.ObjectiveThis study investigated work-related stressors among healthcare professionals treating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients, aiming to identify challenges and inform targeted support. The hypothesis posited that stress levels vary based on workload, extended hours, insufficient rest, discomfort from protective gear, burnout, and job dissatisfaction. Additionally, stress effects were expected to differ by sex, age, marital status, income, and education, with younger individuals, women, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds experiencing higher rates of stress.MethodsThis study examined 198 Jordanian healthcare professionals treating COVID-19 patients across four government, semi-governmental, and private hospitals. The custom-designed instrument assessed demographics and work-related stressors. The measurement instrument and model showed high reliability and validity.ResultsThe findings revealed that work-related stress and fatigue were rampant among participants, influenced by workload, extended working hours, insufficient rest time, and discomfort from protective gear. Burnout and job dissatisfaction were also reported, with a significant proportion contemplating leaving their jobs. Gender disparities were noted: males struggled with shift systems, while females faced difficulties accessing personal protective equipment and feared job loss. Younger individuals experienced higher stress and fatigue levels, whereas older groups reported significant stress and fatigue compared to middle-aged groups. Additionally, the marital status, education level, and income were linked to specific stress factors.ConclusionsThe findings confirm that healthcare professionals treating COVID-19 patients experience varying work-related stress levels due to workload, long hours, insufficient rest, protective gear discomfort, burnout, and job dissatisfaction. The findings, therefore, underscore the need for targeted support and interventions to address stress and safeguard their well-being during the pandemic.

Abstract
Background and Objective Nurses comprise the majority of the health workforce in the Philippines. Previous studies revealed that nurses manifest negative mental health outcomes exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) of nurses in the Philippines and their workplace psychosocial support interventions during the pandemic. The ProQOL measures compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS). Methods A self-administered online questionnaire was disseminated by the Philippine Nurses Association, Inc. to affiliated nurses via email and Facebook posts. Out of 713 responses, 239 were eligible with their data analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post hoc pairwise multiple comparisons. Results Respondents were found to have high CS (41.95 [SD 5.97]), moderate BO (23.56 [SD 6.07]), and moderate STS (26.62 [SD 8.18]). The most reported intervention was policies on confidentiality of workers' mental health (84.94%) while the least reported was community engagements under the hospital's mental health program (61.51%). ProQOL scores significantly differed in CS by age (p=0.011), position (p=0.044) and monthly income (p=0.016), BO by age (p=0.001) and years with current employer (p=0.009), and STS by region (p=0.017) and area of assignment (p=0.015). The existence of interventions yielded significant increase in CS and decrease in BO scores. Conclusion Nurses in the Philippines exhibit high and favorable ProQOL during the pandemic. The majority of respondents reported the presence of workplace interventions which yield significant differences in CS and BO. The findings highlight the importance of workplace psychosocial support interventions and the need to strengthen implementation.

Abstract
Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly impacted health systems worldwide. Aim This study explored the effects of the COVID-19 cascade on health programmes in Uganda. Setting This study conducted in-depth interviews with key informants involved in Uganda's national COVID-19 response. Methods A cross-sectional exploratory study using qualitative approaches was carried out. A purposive sample of 30 key informants from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and implementing partners were interviewed (May 2023 - June 2023). Interviews were audio recorded and analysed using inductive thematic analysis with NVivo 14 software. Results Four themes emerged: (1) approaches and opportunities for successful COVID-19 response, (2) negative impacts of the pandemic on health services, (3) barriers to implementing response strategies and (4) suggestions for preparedness for future epidemics. Conclusion While the pandemic disrupted health programmes and access to care, it also revealed opportunities to strengthen healthcare delivery. Strengthening the dedicated Ministry of Health department for epidemic preparedness and response is recommended. Contribution This study identifies areas for improvement in Uganda's health system exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It informs public health preparedness efforts in Uganda and other African countries, aligning with the Journal's focus on strengthening health systems in Africa.

Abstract
AIMS To examine symptoms of depression and generalised anxiety among nurses over 2 years during the pandemic and compare them to the general population. BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in mental stress among the population worldwide. Nursing staff have been identified as being under remarkable strain. DESIGN A multicentre prospective longitudinal study. METHODS Symptoms of depression and generalised anxiety in 507 nurses were examined at four different time points (T1: April-July 2020, T2: November 2020-January 2021, T3: May-July 2021, T4: February-May 2022). Results were compared with values of the German general population, presence of gender-specific differences was analysed and frequencies of clinically relevant levels of depression and anxiety were determined. RESULTS Throughout the study (T1-T4), a significant increase in depressive and anxiety symptoms was observed. At all four measurement time points, nurses showed significantly higher prevalence for depression and anxiety compared to the German general population. No significant gender differences were found. Frequencies for probable depression and generalised anxiety disorder among nurses were: 21.6% and 18.5% (T1), 31.4% and 29.2% (T2), 29.5% and 26.2% (T3), 33.7% and 26.4% (T4). CONCLUSION During the pandemic, symptoms of depression and generalised anxiety among nurses increased significantly and remained elevated. Their symptom levels were permanently higher than in the general population. These findings strongly suggest that the circumstances of the pandemic severely affected nurses´ mental health. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The COVID-19 pandemic caused a great mental strain on caregivers. This study was able to demonstrate the significant increase in depression and anxiety among nurses during the pandemic. It highlights the urgent need for prevention, screening and support systems in hospitals. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION Supportive programmes and preventive services should be developed, not least to prevent the growing shortage of nurses in the health care systems. REPORTING METHOD The study adhered to relevant EQUATOR guidelines. The STROBE checklist for cohort study was used as the reporting method. PATIENT CONTRIBUTION Five hundred and seven nurses completed the questionnaire and provided data for analysis. Abstract
AIM To describe nursing home care staff's experiences of encounters and communication with colleagues, residents and residents' family members as well as their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic while working in a multicultural environment. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive study. METHODS Interviews with 17 care staff from nursing homes in Sweden were analysed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS Care staff reported different working experiences related to their possibility to prepare themselves, and some felt more supported than others by their managers. Feelings of pride were experienced when Covid-19 infections were prevented. Overall, they received information about Covid-19, but not initially. Acceptance of colleagues with limited Swedish language skills was reported, but frustration and impaired communication were common. Negative mental health effects from working with critically ill residents and taking care of the deceased were reported. CONCLUSION Employers did not provide care staff with sufficient information and support, and strategies are needed to maintain communication with and between care workers. Further support is needed to maintain care workers' mental health and well-being during critical working conditions. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE Nursing home management needs to implement clear structured tools for communicating essential information. These tools should take language skills into consideration. During pandemics, care workers must receive the support they need to maintain their mental health and well-being. Abstract
Background Recent studies have considered the psychological resilience and growth experienced by healthcare professionals, particularly those facing stressors and traumatic events. Aims To study post-traumatic growth in healthcare workers caring for patients, determine the internal consistency of the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) and PTGI-Short Form (PTGI-SF) instruments, and carry out confirmatory analyses of their five-factor structures. Setting Healthcare workers based in Greece. Methods Cross-sectional design. Linear regression analysis with tested independent variables consisting of demographic, professional, health facility, and patient contact data. Confirmatory five-factor analyses of PTGI and PTGI-SF results were performed to validate their associated factors. Unidimensional reliability of the PTGI and PTGI-SF results was calculated. Results The final regression model included sex and whether the internet was the source of health-related knowledge (F 2102 = 11.979, p < 0.0001). The confirmatory factor analysis of the PTGI confirmed its five-factor structure (χ2 189 = 1233.642, p < 0.0001), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA = 0.229, p < 0.0001), and internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.971). Similarly for the PTGI-SF (χ2 35 = 535.965, p < 0.0001; RMSEA = 0.369, p < 0.0001; Cronbach α = 0.935). Conclusion Being female and not using the internet as the principal source of information about diseases were each associated with increased post-traumatic growth. The internal consistencies of both the PTGI and the PTGI-SF were confirmed, as were the robustness of the five-factor structure of each instrument.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Ensuring the total well-being of healthcare workers (HCWs), including their mental health and psychological well-being, is an essential aspect in the delivery of patient care and the preservation of the health workforce. This study aimed to determine the level of mental well-being and emotional state of HCWs in terms of depression, anxiety, and stress using the DASS-21 scale in a tertiary government hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines and to identify the job-related factors that may be associated with these outcomes. Methods This is an analytical, cross-sectional study among HCWs involved in direct patient care in a tertiary government hospital in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection was conducted from February to March 2022 through an online self-administered questionnaire, which included the Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire (DCSQ), and the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). This was sent to doctors, nurses, and allied medical workers actively working in the clinical areas. All responses were collected and analyzed. Results Three hundred sixty-four healthcare workers were included in the study. Majority were single (62.62%), living with immediate family (50.82%), and working in a COVID-designated area (62.09%). High prevalence of depression (49.18%), anxiety (61.54%), and stress (30.22%) was found among the HCWs. Work in high infection/COVID-designated areas was significantly associated with anxiety and stress, and high-job demand was significantly associated with all three mental health states compared to low job-demand. Conclusion Focus should be placed on modifying the condition of high job demand among healthcare workers working in hospitals. This includes ensuring optimum staffing levels and patient to HCW ratio which avoids HCWs from being subjected to high workloads and time pressures that subsequently increase risk for stress, anxiety, and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological distress to the population and healthcare workers. Physicians' well-being is essential and contributes significantly to overall health. This study aimed to assess the strain on Polish general practitioners from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and to ascertain the potential predictors of their distress. METHODS Data was collected using a self-reported online questionnaire from 162 GPs in Poland between December 2020 and August 2021 as part of the international PRICOV-19 study. General practitioners' well-being was evaluated using the validated Mayo Clinic's expanded 9-item well-being index (eWBI). Spearman's correlation was used to measure the strength and direction of association between general practitioners' distress level and continuous variables, and for ordinal variables, Gamma correlation was recommended for many tide ranks. We also checked the association of the level of distress with continuous variables by categorizing them and applying the Kruskal-Wallis test likewise for a comparison of the distress in different practice locations. RESULTS A vast majority (80%) of respondents were considered at risk of distress during the COVID-19 outbreak, with an eWBI score of 2 or more. Higher distress scores were exhibited among general practitioners who reported increased responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and perceived need for additional training. The experience of collaboration with neighbouring practices and the provision of adequate governmental support emerged as significant protective factors against distress. No correlation was observed between Polish general practitioners' distress level and years of professional experience, number of patients in the practice, number of doctors working there, the practice's location, or working with more vulnerable patient populations. CONCLUSIONS Our findings proved that COVID-19 placed an extraordinary emotional burden on Polish general practitioners and highlighted the importance of targeted support services and resource allocation to primary healthcare in Poland in case of any potential future crisis similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The knowledge gaps on the experiences of early career health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic informed this study, which examined their vaccination status, personal and workplace experiences in South Africa. METHODS Wits longitudinal Study to Determine the Operation of the labour Market among its health professional graduates (WiSDOM), a prospective longitudinal cohort study established in 2017, consists of eight health professional groups of clinical associates, dentists, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, oral hygienists, pharmacists and physiotherapists. As a part of annual follow-up surveys, we examined the personal and workplace experiences and the vaccination status of cohort members during the COVID-19 pandemic years: 2020 until 2022. We measured workplace experiences using a Likert scale that ranged from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree). We constructed a composite index of positive workplace COVID-19 support using a principal component analysis.We compared differences among the professional groups using proportions for categorical variables and means for numerical variables. We used multiple linear regression to investigate factors associated with the workplace COVID-19 support score and Firth's penalised logistic regression for COVID-19 infection and vaccination. RESULTS In 2022, the mean age of the 363 cohort members was 28.9 (± 2.1), and the majority were female (74.2%). In 2020, 22.6% of the cohort reported COVID-19 infections but this increased to 45.3% by 2021. The composite index shows that doctors and nurses reported the lowest COVID-19 workplace support, while oral hygienists and dentists reported the most support. Although 89.5% of cohort members reported full COVID-19 vaccination status, 9.4% indicated non-intention to get vaccinated. The regression analysis showed that doctors (p<0.001) and women (p<0.05) reported significantly lower workplace COVID-19 support scores. Those working in hospitals had 17.1% higher COVID-19 infections (p<0.01). The lack of a COVID-19 supportive workplace resulted in 15.7% higher infections among early career health professionals (p<0.01). CONCLUSION The study findings underscore the need for positive practice environments for early career health professionals in South Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ample evidence across non-healthcare fields highlights the role of work-related flow in enhancing resilience against work stress and work engagement. Understanding flow and its factors can support staff development and management. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the level of work-related flow and its associated factors among frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A cross-sectional multicenter study included 336 nurses caring for COVID-19 patients between March and April 2022. Cluster random sampling was used to select 9 nurse groups from 29 Taiwanese hospitals specialized in COVID-19 care. A web survey link was shared on the selected nurses' social media. Hierarchical regression analyses examined predictor-outcome relationships, following the STROBE checklist for reporting findings. RESULTS Among demographic characteristics, sex (β = -0.11; p = 0.016) and living arrangement (β = -0.12; p = 0.017) reached statistical significance in model 3. Social support from family, friends, and significant others, managerial position, and sufficiency of personal protective equipment showed significant associations with work-related flow (all β > 0.12; p < 0.05). The variables included in the final model accounted for 35% of the variance in work-related flow for COVID-19 patient care tasks. CONCLUSIONS Flow experience is influenced by factors associated with demographics, work conditions, and social support. Nurse administrators should consider these factors when evaluating nurses' flow at work. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND MANAGEMENT Allocating care tasks to nurses based on their flow levels can be beneficial, particularly during healthcare crises. Ensuring a sufficient supply of personal protective equipment and offering social support to nurses are vital strategies for facilitating their flow experience in the workplace.

Abstract
Background Healthcare workers are the first to be exposed to the virus and are at greater risk than the general public. This study aimed to examine the risk factors that affected hospital staff's general health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Isfahan, Iran. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on the staff of all hospitals in Isfahan one year after the COVID-19 outbreak (2021-2022). The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) was used to determine social functioning, while the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) was employed to assess physical and psychological health status. Results There was a significant positive relationship between work experience in the COVID-19 ward and the scores of physical health (r = 0.26, df = 298, p < 0.01), depressive symptoms (r = 0.24, df = 298, p < 0.01), and anxiety (r = 0.17, df = 298, p < 0.01). The job and income satisfaction score was negatively related to the scores of social function variables (r = -0.25, df = 298, p < 0.01) and depressive syndrome (r = -0.12, df = 298, p < 0.05). The fear of COVID-19 was related to social functioning (r = 0.12, df = 298, p < 0.01), physical health (r = 0.31, df = 298, p < 0.001), depressive symptoms (r = 0.36, df = 298, p < 0.001), panic attacks (r = 0.15, df = 298, p < 0.01), and generalized anxiety (r = 0.23, df = 298, p < 0.001). Gender and age significantly predicted general health. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected all dimensions of hospital staff's health, particularly those with underlying physical conditions.

Abstract
Background The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has presented unprecedented stressors and difficulties for healthcare professionals. This study explored the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorders and burnout among radiology practitioners and interns in various hospitals in Saudi Arabia after the end of the COVID-19 global public health emergency. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 230 radiology practitioners and interns was conducted between October and November 2023. This study utilized the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS-MP) 22-item questionnaire, employing a non-probability convenience sampling method. The average scores of the individual components constituting the GAD-7 scale and each burnout scale were calculated, and statistical analyses were conducted using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H nonparametric tests. Results Of 382 radiology practitioners and interns, 230 (60.2%) responded to the survey. Notably, 42.6% of the participants reported experiencing GAD. Regarding burnout, 82.3% were at moderate-to-high risk for emotional exhaustion, 93.5% for depersonalization, and 52.1% for personal achievement. The 31-40 years age group showed significantly higher burnout rates (p = 0.001) compared with the other age groups. Those with more than three years of experience had notably higher emotional exhaustion scores (p = 0.002) and a nearly significant increase in depersonalization scores (p = 0.051) than those with less experience. Discussion Our study revealed that 42.6% of radiology practitioners and interns experienced GAD, with the majority facing significant burnout. Furthermore, our research indicates a decline in GAD levels among radiology practitioners and interns compared with the peak COVID-19 pandemic period. It also showed a significant increase in both the incidence and severity of burnout, surpassing pre-pandemic levels in a comparable cohort. These findings emphasize the pressing challenges of GAD and burnout among healthcare workers, especially radiology professionals.

Abstract
Family physicians are a pillar of the primary healthcare system, and their own mental well-being is integral to their performance. However, many studies have suggested a high prevalence of mental distress. The contributing factors include the emotional demands of the profession, work overload, budgetary constraints, loss of autonomy, and erosion of professional values. Outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbate distress due to a greater risk of exposure to the virus, increased working hours, and fear of infecting families. Thus, it is crucial to assess risks and provide preventive measures. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the dietary patterns of family physicians and their mood. This study used a cross-sectional descriptive method and a validated Food-Mood Questionnaire (FMQ), shared via social networks across 10 European countries, to collect data from family physicians. Permission to use the FMQ was obtained. The breakfast-pattern subscale had the highest mean score (14.670 ± 4.305). The other subscale mean scores were as follows: health pattern (13.317 ± 5.388), mental distress pattern (11.184 ± 3.824), and western diet pattern (9.827 ± 3.604). According to Pearson correlation test there was a positive correlation between breakfast and Western diet patterns and between breakfast and health patterns. There was a negative correlation between health and mental distress pattern. Evidence suggests that mental distress may arise from different dietary deficiencies. Physicians' nutritional patterns have an impact on health indicators and are distributed in relation to sociodemographic factors, especially the regions they live in. Diet assessment is becoming a vital modifiable risk factor for mental health, but further research in this field is needed.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the impact of socioeconomic factors on hypertension outcomes. This review examines the implications of the pandemic on the socioeconomic gradient of hypertension and explores the physiological and pathophysiological processes underlying this relationship. Changes in socioeconomic factors have disproportionately affected individuals with lower socioeconomic status, leading to adverse hypertension outcomes. The pandemic-related stressors, coupled with social isolation and disrupted daily routines, have contributed to elevated stress levels among individuals, particularly those with lower socioeconomic status. Equitable access to healthcare, enhancing health literacy and patient empowerment, and addressing social determinants of health are essential components of hypertension management strategies. By recognizing the specific challenges faced by individuals with lower socioeconomic status and implementing targeted interventions, public health efforts can help reduce the socioeconomic gradient of hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify stressors faced by hospital food service workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic and effective interventions mitigating these stressors. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we conducted surveys ( n = 305) and interviews ( n = 9) in the summer and fall of 2022 with employees in hospital settings to determine the psychosocial, organizational, and environmental stressors they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and interventions that improved health and well-being. Findings: The main stressors reported were fear of infection, increased work demands and schedule unpredictability, and financial insecurity. Employee well-being was bolstered by regular, clear, bidirectional communication; a sense of community and purpose; benefits like paid sick leave and health insurance coverage; and organizational policies that included masking and vaccine requirements demonstrating commitment to protecting worker health. Conclusion: Organizations can play a critical role in guarding the health, well-being, and resilience of frontline workers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused global disruptions in healthcare service delivery. The prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) services were also interrupted, threatening the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 3. This article describes the PMTCT service interruptions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic in Tshwane healthcare facilities. METHODS A descriptive phenomenological design was used to explore and describe the experiences of healthcare providers offering PMTCT services during COVID-19 in the Tshwane district, Gauteng province. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 16 participants, and Colaizzi's data analysis steps were followed in analysing the findings. RESULTS Participants reported interruptions in PMTCT service delivery during the pandemic. Non-adherence to scheduled visits resulted in patients defaulting or not adhering to treatment regimens, high viral loads and mother-infant pairs' loss to follow-up. Other features of service disruption included late antenatal bookings, low client flow and delays in conducting deoxyribonucleic acid-polymerase chain reaction (DNA-PCR) testing in HIV-exposed babies. In addition, staff shortages occurred because of re-assignments to COVID-19-related activities. Study participants were psychologically affected by the fear of contracting COVID-19 and worked in a frustrating and stressful environment. CONCLUSION Improved community-based follow-up services are critical to enhance PMTCT service outcomes and prevent infant HIV infections.Contribution: The findings may influence policymakers in developing strategies to curb HIV infections among mothers and children during pandemics.

Abstract
Importance Stress First Aid is an evidence-informed peer-to-peer support intervention to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being of health care workers (HCWs). Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored peer-to-peer support intervention compared with usual care to support HCWs' well-being at hospitals and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design, Setting, and Participants This cluster randomized clinical trial comprised 3 cohorts of HCWs who were enrolled from March 2021 through July 2022 at 28 hospitals and FQHCs in the US. Participating sites were matched as pairs by type, size, and COVID-19 burden and then randomized to the intervention arm or usual care arm (any programs already in place to support HCW well-being). The HCWs were surveyed before and after peer-to-peer support intervention implementation. Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis was used to evaluate the intervention's effect on outcomes, including general psychological distress and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intervention The peer-to-peer support intervention was delivered to HCWs by site champions who received training and subsequently trained the HCWs at their site. Recipients of the intervention were taught to respond to their own and their peers' stress reactions. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary outcomes were general psychological distress and PTSD. General psychological distress was measured with the Kessler 6 instrument, and PTSD was measured with the PTSD Checklist. Results A total of 28 hospitals and FQHCs with 2077 HCWs participated. Both preintervention and postintervention surveys were completed by 2077 HCWs, for an overall response rate of 28% (41% at FQHCs and 26% at hospitals). A total of 862 individuals (696 females [80.7%]) were from sites that were randomly assigned to the intervention arm; the baseline mean (SD) psychological distress score was 5.86 (5.70) and the baseline mean (SD) PTSD score was 16.11 (16.07). A total of 1215 individuals (947 females [78.2%]) were from sites assigned to the usual care arm; the baseline mean (SD) psychological distress score was 5.98 (5.62) and the baseline mean (SD) PTSD score was 16.40 (16.43). Adherence to the intervention was 70% for FQHCs and 32% for hospitals. The ITT analyses revealed no overall treatment effect for psychological distress score (0.238 [95% CI, -0.310 to 0.785] points) or PTSD symptom score (0.189 [95% CI, -1.068 to 1.446] points). Post hoc analyses examined the heterogeneity of treatment effect by age group with consistent age effects observed across primary outcomes (psychological distress and PTSD). Among HCWs in FQHCs, there were significant and clinically meaningful treatment effects for HCWs 30 years or younger: a more than 4-point reduction for psychological distress (-4.552 [95% CI, -8.067 to -1.037]) and a nearly 7-point reduction for PTSD symptom scores (-6.771 [95% CI, -13.224 to -0.318]). Conclusions and Relevance This trial found that this peer-to-peer support intervention did not improve well-being outcomes for HCWs overall but had a protective effect against general psychological distress and PTSD in HCWs aged 30 years or younger in FQHCs, which had higher intervention adherence. Incorporating this peer-to-peer support intervention into medical training, with ongoing support over time, may yield beneficial results in both standard care and during public health crises. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Covid-19 pandemic has represented one of the most stressful events of recent times and has placed enormous psychological pressure on doctors and nurses. AIMS The objective of this work is to evaluate the psychological impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on Spanish nurses and doctors, and to identify factors related to their mental health. METHODS The study is a descriptive study and examined 812 doctors and 768 nurses. The dependent variables were health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression, perceived stress and insomnia. Participants completed the Health-related Quality of Life-Questionnaire, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item-Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Impact Event Scale-Revised, and the Insomnia Severity Index. Sociodemographic and Covid-related data were also recorded. Descriptive statistics, univariable analysis and multivariable linear regression models were used. RESULTS A greater proportion of nurses than doctors suffered clinical anxiety, depression and insomnia (56.84 % vs 45.81 p-value<0.0001, 64.67 % vs 53.39 p-value<0.0001, and 23.04 % vs 18.02 p-value 0.01, respectively). Although in our study nurses were more likely to suffer clinical anxiety, stress and insomnia than doctors, our results nevertheless showed that there were no differences in terms of quality of life. Different factors related to mental health were identified for doctors and nurses. Nurses working in care homes or geriatric services (OR = 4.13, IC95% 1.71-9.99, p-value 0.002), and in services with greatest contact with Covid-19 patients (OR = 1.71,IC95% 1.10-2.68, p-value 0.02) were more likely to suffer depression. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirms that doctors and nurses are at high risk of clinical anxiety, depression, stress or insomnia during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted people's mental health significantly. Frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) were arguably most affected, particularly in low-to-middle-income countries like South Africa. Understanding their experiences is important to inform interventions for social and psychological support for future pandemics. Aim This study explored the experiences of frontline HCWs in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Setting The sample included HCWs from various professions and health sectors who worked with COVID-19 patients across South Africa. Methods An exploratory descriptive qualitative design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 frontline HCWs recruited via purposive sampling. Data were analysed using principles of inductive thematic analysis. Results Four major themes were identified in the data: (1) Working during COVID-19 was an emotional rollercoaster; (2) Working during COVID-19 was physically and mentally exhausting; (3) Participants held negative attitudes towards the Department of Health; and (4) COVID-19 had a transformative impact on the daily life of HCWs. Conclusion HCWs' experiences were diverse and marked by contradictions. Limited psychological support and resources aggravated experiences. However, a positive narrative of hope and gratitude also resonated with participants. Qualitative methodologies provided depth and insights into the diverse realities of frontline HCWs. Contribution This study provides significant insights into the experiences of a diverse group of frontline South African HCWs during COVID-19. It demonstrates a shift in the definition of a 'frontline' HCW and highlights the need for greater psychological support and individualised public health interventions during future pandemics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Supported wellbeing centres established during the COVID-19 pandemic provided high quality rest spaces and access to peer-to-peer psychological first aid for healthcare workers (HCWs). The centres were well accessed and valued by HCWs, but their relationship with wellbeing and job-related factors is not well established. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between wellbeing centre use, HCWs wellbeing and job-related factors (job stressfulness, job satisfaction, presenteeism, turnover intentions). METHODS Secondary analysis of data from 819 HCWs from an acute hospital trust who completed an online survey in April-July 2020, as part of the COVID-Well study. Measures included the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, and four single-item global measures of job stressfulness, job satisfaction, presenteeism and turnover intentions. ANCOVA models and regression analyses were conducted on these data. RESULTS HCWs who had not accessed the wellbeing centres had lower wellbeing (β = 0.12, p < .001), higher job stressfulness (β = - 0.22, p < .001), lower job satisfaction (β = 0.39, p < .001), higher presenteeism (β = - 0.22, p < .001) and were of younger age (β = 0.09, p = .002). Centre use was associated with wellbeing irrespective of job stressfulness. Those reporting presenteeism and who accessed the centre (M = 3.30, SE = 0.04) had higher wellbeing than those who accessed the centre but did not report presenteeism (M = 3.06, SE = 0.04) (F(1, 791) = 18.65, p < .001, ηp2 = 0.02). Centre use was not significantly associated with turnover intentions (B = - 0.30, p = .13; Wald = 2.26; odds = 0.74), while job stress and job satisfaction showed significant effects. CONCLUSIONS Accessing wellbeing centres was associated with higher wellbeing of HCWs, particularly for those reporting presenteeism. Therefore, the centres may have provided greatest respite and restoration for those present at work but not in optimal health. Younger workers were disproportionately affected in terms of wellbeing, and targeted support for this population is needed. Strategies to decrease presenteeism and maximise job satisfaction are urgently required. Healthcare organisations should provide rest spaces and psychological support to HCWs for the long-term, as part of a systems-wide approach to improving workforce health and wellbeing.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges for health care workers (HCWs) worldwide. While the adverse effects of the pandemic on the well-being of HCWs in general have now been established, little is known about the impact on HCWs of psychiatric hospitals (PHCWs). PHCWs are of special interest, given that they faced both an increase in infection rates among psychiatric patients as well as in mental strain of the general public due to consequences of the pandemic. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the pandemic affected PHCWs as well as possible differences between PHCWs and other health care workers (OHCWs) in Germany during the first wave of the pandemic. We conducted a country-wide anonymous online survey early during the first pandemic wave between April 15th and May 1st, 2020, to assess different aspects of subjective burden and perceived stress using 5-point Likert-scale questions. We analysed data of 1530 PHCWs and 2114 OHCWs and showed that PHCWs reported higher subjective burden and stress compared to OHCWs (p<0.001). Overall, nurses from both groups of HCWs showed higher ratings in subjective burden and stress than physicians. These higher ratings for subjective burden were even more pronounced for nurses working in psychiatric hospitals. Future research is needed to investigate the causes for PHCWs' increased stress and subjective burden, especially when taking into account the long-term effects of the pandemic, which may lead to further challenges and an ever-increasing workload, especially for PHCWs.

Abstract
Background Poor psychological functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic has been reported in several studies of healthcare workers from around the world. Factors that might predict this have yet to be established. Objectives First, to ascertain which factors were associated with poor psychological functioning in a cohort of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, to characterize key sociodemographic aspects of this cohort. Third, to determine the degree to which any predictors of poor psychological functioning were associated with each other. Methods A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted of 144 healthcare workers in Patras, Greece, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire consisted of: (1) demographic survey questions; (2) the Psychological Consequences Questionnaire scale; (3) the Kessler Psychological Distress scale; and (4) Toulouse's scale for coping strategies. The data were analyzed using general linear modeling. Results The statistical model (p < 10-10) indicated that smoking or taking drugs to calm anxiety, feeling ashamed, and being overwhelmed by one's feelings were all predictors of poor psychological functioning. Conversely, income was a protective factor. A post hoc network analysis showed that smoking or taking drugs to calm anxiety was relatively strongly associated with feeling ashamed; the latter was also associated with feeling overwhelmed. There was a weak negative association between income and feeling ashamed. Conclusion This study highlights the critical importance of psychological functioning in shaping the mental well-being of healthcare professionals during pandemics. Prioritizing the mental health of frontline workers is crucial for their well-being and for the overall functioning of healthcare systems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Since its emergence, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a radical effect on different aspects of health worldwide. The burden created by the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare systems has also involved educational and academic activities among healthcare professionals. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the participation of doctors and nurses in educational and academic activities in Bahrain. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted through an online questionnaire that was distributed among 204 healthcare providers (HCPs) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. RESULTS Out of 204 HCPs, 110 (53.9%) were doctors and 94 (46.1%) were nurses. A total of 154 responses were received (100 (64%) doctors and 54 (35.1%) nurses) with an overall response rate of 75.5%. Seventy-four (74%) doctors and 32 (59.2%) nurses stated that their overall academic activities had decreased since the start of the pandemic, yet this was not statistically significant (P=0.059). Unlike nurses, doctors attended more webinars 54 (54%) and online courses 47 (47%), compared to the time before the pandemic (P=0.022, P=0.014, respectively). CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on educational and academic activities among healthcare workers. However, it created an opportunity to expand the use of electronic and online methods in those activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overload and anxiety were common phenomena among frontline nurses during the pandemic. Understanding the potential pathway for fostering engagement in high-stress working conditions can provide evidence of targeted intervention to facilitate nurses' well-being and safety practices. This study aims to investigate the level of nurses' work engagement during nucleic acid collection tasks in the COVID-19 pandemic and identify its potential antecedents. METHODS A cross-sectional design was adopted. A sample of 824 nurses who engaged in nucleic acid collection tasks completed an online self-report questionnaire between 1 March and 31 May 2022. Descriptive and path analyses were utilized to analyse the interrelationships among anxiety, perceived workload, affective commitment, perceived organizational support and work engagement. This study was conducted and reported under the guidelines for Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology. RESULTS The results showed that frontline nurses engaged in such tasks reported high levels of anxiety and task load and low levels of work engagement. Path analysis identified anxiety symptoms, perceived workload, perceived organizational support, and affective commitment as associated with work engagement, and among these factors, perceived organizational support and affective commitment played key roles in mediating the relationship of anxiety, workload and work engagement in high-stress working conditions. CONCLUSIONS Affective commitment and perceived organizational support were associated with frontline nurses' level of work engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic; these two variables might explain how engagement is generated in high-anxiety and high-workload situations. When healthcare organizations give more attention to frontline nurses' physical and psychological conditions and are able to innovatively motivate affective commitment and facilitate organizational support, nurses' work engagement in high-level tasks may increase, thus enhancing work safety and personal well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explores fears and worries regarding SARS-CoV-2 risk of infection and transmission to relatives, co-workers, and patients in relation to non-pharmacological preventive interventions among healthcare workers (including physicians, nurses, aides, cleaners, maintenance, and security staff) in a healthcare institution in Barcelona (Spain), during the first and second waves of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. METHOD The research used an explorative qualitative approach. Six focus groups and ten individual interviews were conducted online and audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis and mixed coding. RESULTS Forty professionals participated in the study. Four common themes emerged in all groups: challenges related to the lack of pandemic preparedness, concerns about personal protective equipment, unclear guidelines for case and contact tracing, and communication-related difficulties. CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the key recommendations to improve non-pharmacological preventive interventions to reduce workers' fears and worries about the risk of infection and spreading the infection to others, including families. Above all, these should include ensuring the availability, and correct use of adequate personal protective equipment, improve guidelines on case and contact tracing, and setting effective communication channels for all workers of the organization. These recommendations must be reinforced in maintenance and security personnel, as well as night shift nurses and aides, to also reduce health inequalities.

Abstract
The stigma associated with food assistance is a significant barrier to resolution of food insecurity. Interventions and policies aimed at reducing food insecurity would benefit from the inclusion of strategies aimed at minimizing food assistance stigma. We developed the Food Resource Acceptability Questionnaire (FRAQ), a scale that measures the perceptions of stigma associated with food assistance. Qualitative interviews, modified Delphi technique, and exploratory factor analysis were used to develop and evaluate the 17-item scale. The FRAQ consists of two subscales (stigma and the belief that food is a basic right) to measure the likelihood of individuals perceiving food assistance as socially and culturally acceptable. Cronbach's alphas were 0.85, 0.80, and 0.89 for the Stigma subscale, Food as a Basic Right subscale, and the overall FRAQ, respectively. Additional research is needed to determine the applicability of the FRAQ in diverse populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As frontline healthcare workers, there is a growing expectation that nurses should be able to respond to disclosures of family violence. However, the profession and hospital systems have been slow to respond with clear skills, knowledge and confidence deficits identified in existing research. There is limited research which has robustly evaluated the effectiveness of in-depth, multifaceted training on readiness to respond among nurses. AIM To longitudinally evaluate the effectiveness of an in-depth family violence training intervention on confidence, knowledge and clinical skills of nurses working in a large tertiary adult hospital. DESIGN Single-centre, longitudinal intervention study. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) cross-sectional guidelines were used. METHODS One hundred and ten nursing clinicians participated in this study to complete a comprehensive evidence-based model of healthcare workers response for assisting patients experiencing family violence. A mixed methods survey was used to assess change in knowledge, confidence and clinical skills among participants. Outcome assessment was electronically undertaken at baseline, 6-9 months and 12-15 months following intervention. RESULTS Statistically significant improvement was seen in self-reported knowledge, confidence and frequency of screening for family violence. Relative to baseline estimates, these improvements were identified 6-9 months and 12-15 months following intervention; albeit with consideration to the visually observed trend of skill reversion at follow-up. Quantitative findings were paralleled by qualitatively identified improvements in the recognition of the intersectional nature of violence, need for patient collaboration in screening and depth in considerations around how family violence is screened for. CONCLUSIONS Findings provide tentative support for the utility of a multidimensional training approach to improving nurses' readiness to respond to disclosures of family violence. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study provides preliminary support for multidimensional, evidence-based training to effectively improve nurses' confidence, knowledge and clinical skills required for responding to family violence. REPORTING METHOD The study complies with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (SQUIRE) Statement: guidelines for reporting observational studies (see Table S1). PATIENT CONTRIBUTION Patients were involved in the initial design of the survey tool. This involvement came through the Allied Health Consumer panel and included input on the design and question wording of the survey items.

Abstract
Background China recorded a massive COVID-19 pandemic wave after ending its Dynamic Zero-COVID Policy on January 8, 2023. As a result, mental health professionals (MHPs) experienced negative mental health consequences, including an increased level of fear related to COVID-19. This study aimed to explore the prevalence and correlates of COVID-19 fear among MHPs following the end of the Policy, and its association with quality of life (QoL) from a network analysis perspective. Methods A cross-sectional national study was conducted across China. The correlates of COVID-19 fear were examined using both univariate and multivariate analyses. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to determine the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and QoL. Central symptoms were identified using network analysis through the "Expected Influence" of the network model while specific symptoms directly correlated with QoL were identified through the "flow function." Results A total of 10,647 Chinese MHPs were included. The overall prevalence of COVID-19 fear (FCV-19S total score ≥ 16) was 60.8% (95% CI = 59.9-61.8%). The binary logistic regression analysis found that MHPs with fear of COVID-19 were more likely to be married (OR = 1.198; p < 0.001) and having COVID-19 infection (OR = 1.235; p = 0.005) and quarantine experience (OR = 1.189; p < 0.001). Having better economic status (good vs. poor: OR = 0.479; p < 0.001; fair vs. poor: OR = 0.646; p < 0.001) and health status (good vs. poor: OR = 0.410; p < 0.001; fair vs. poor: OR = 0.617; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 fear. The ANCOVA showed that MHPs with fear of COVID-19 had lower QoL [F = 228.0, p < 0.001]. "Palpitation when thinking about COVID-19" was the most central symptom in the COVID-19 fear network model, while "Uncomfortable thinking about COVID-19" had the strongest negative association with QoL (average edge weight = -0.048). Conclusion This study found a high prevalence of COVID-19 fear among Chinese MHPs following the end of China's Dynamic Zero-COVID Policy. Developing effective prevention and intervention measures that target the central symptoms as well as symptoms correlated with QoL in our network structure would be important to address COVID-19 fear and improve QoL.

Abstract
As supply chains experienced disruptions early in the COVID-19 pandemic, personal protective equipment (PPE) quickly became scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of perceptions of inadequate PPE, fear of COVID-19 infection, and self-reported direct COVID-19 exposure on health care workers. Data to assess distress, resilience, social-ecological factors, and work and nonwork-related stressors were collected from June to July 2020 at a large medical center. Stressors were analyzed by role using descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis. Our data indicate that job role influenced fear of infection and perceptions of inadequate PPE in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived organizational support was also related to perceptions of inadequate PPE supply. Interestingly, work location, rather than job role, was predictive of direct COVID-19 exposure. Our data highlight a disconnect between the perception of safety in the health care setting with real risk of exposure to infectious disease. This study suggests that leaders in health care should focus on cultivating supportive organizational cultures, assessing both perceived and actual safety, and provide adequate training in safety practices may improve preparedness and organizational trust during times of both certainty and crisis particularly for clinical workers with less education and training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic placed immense stress on healthcare professionals worldwide. This strain often resulted in imbalances in their physical and mental well-being, necessitating effective coping mechanisms. In light of this context, this study investigates the correlations between the fear of COVID-19, self-coping strategies, and positive emotions, with particular reference to the Iranian health care industry. METHODS Data were collected from 1050 healthcare professionals in Iran and the data were analysed sing structural equation modelling. RESULTS The study revealed that pandemic fear negatively impacts self-coping strategies and positive emotions during crisis scenarios. Conversely, self-coping strategies have a positive correlation with positive emotions. The research also underscored the role of resilience in reinforcing the favorable link between self-coping strategies and positive emotions. CONCLUSIONS This study is one of the first to explore the significance of resilience and self-coping strategies among Iranian healthcare professionals during the pandemic. Its findings offer valuable insights for researchers and practitioners, paving the way for further contributions in this field. Future research endeavors may consider investigating the effects of various psychological interventions, including breathing techniques, self-talk, physical exercises, yoga, optimizing sleep, and dietary measures on the resilience and self-coping practices of healthcare professionals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers (HCWs) are essential resources, and their health and wellbeing are key not only for offering constant and useful care facilities to clients, but also for maintaining the safety of the workforce and patients. The risk of severe mental health problems among HCWs may have increased during large outbreaks of COVID-19. To evaluate the psychosocial status and risk perception of HCWs who participated in treating COVID-19 patients in Northern Iran, we performed a web-based cross-sectional study. METHODS The web-based cross-sectional design was applied between June 27 and September 2, 2021. Using convenience sampling, 637 HCWs were recruited from hospitals in Northern Iran (Mazandaran). The HCWs completed self-report questionnaires that included a sociodemographic information form, the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, Impact of the Event Scale-Revised, Risk Perception Questionnaire, and Anxiety Stress Scale-21. The data were analyzed via descriptive and inferential statistics and univariate/multivariate logistic regression to assess the risk factors linked to each psychosocial consequence. RESULTS The results reveal that the COVID-19 pandemic had an adverse psychosocial influence on HCWs, which was already apparent 1.5 years after the crisis began. Based on the results, 71.6%, 55.6%, and 32.3% of HCWs reported having anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms, respectively, since the outbreak of this disease. The logistic regression models displayed that marital status, having children, and working hours with patients were all risk factors of psychosocial impairment. CONCLUSIONS The outbreak of COVID-19 can be considered an important experience of a bio-disaster resulting in a significant rate of psychiatric problems in HCWs. There is a need for designing and promoting supportive programs to help HCWs cope and to improve their psychosocial state, and the present study has detected for whom psychosocial support may be effective and practical 1.5 years after the primary outbreak. Moreover, detecting and managing concerns and reducing infection-related embarrassment/stigma are essential for improving HCWs' mental health.

Abstract
Objectives Frontline healthcare workers encountered a heightened susceptibility to negative psychological symptoms and behavioral shifts in light of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. This study determined the coping strategies adopted by frontline healthcare workers in Ghana as well as assessed any differences based on demographics, job title, and ranking in four coronavirus disease 2019-designated centers in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Methods Using a hospital-based, mixed-method approach, the study was conducted between May 2021 and September 2021. A total of 94 frontline healthcare workers were randomly sampled and given a self-administered questionnaire, while 13 healthcare workers took in-depth interviews. Data from the survey were analyzed using both IBM SPSS and IBM AMOS and the interview data were transcribed verbatim and coded using thematic analysis. Results The study revealed that coronavirus disease 2019 has affected the psycho-social life of frontline healthcare workers mainly in the form of depression, anxiety, and stress. The three main coping strategies adopted by frontline healthcare workers include personal preventative measures (most dominant), seeking external expert support, and obtaining institutional support. While healthcare workers within the age group 30-39 years were found most compliant with the adoption of personal preventive measures and those below 30 years were found least compliant. Conclusion This study concludes that frontline healthcare workers have been affected by a considerable level of anxiety, stress, and depression during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The study recommends a robust psychological support system at various levels of health care and an Employee Assistance Program with access to a 24-h hotline counseling service for frontline healthcare workers, continuous personal protective equipment provision, regular evidence-based updates on the management of coronavirus disease 2019 patients, and increased commitment from the government in addressing the medical needs of infected frontline healthcare workers.

Abstract
Objective: This study determined nurses' fear of COVID-19 and job motivation levels.
Materials and Methods: The study was conducted cross-sectionally with 147 nurses working in a public hospital between April 1 and April 30, 2022. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, COVID-19 Fear Scale, and Nurse Job Motivation Scale. Data were evaluated using number, percentage, mean, and nonparametric tests.
Results: The mean age of the nurses was 29.95±6.12 years (min=22, max=51); 89.1% were female, 59.2% were married, and 68.7% were undergraduate graduates. The total score on the COVID-19 Fear Scale was 15.85±5.73 (min=7, max=35), and the total score on the Nurse Job Motivation Scale was 60.70±8.66 (min=37, max=75). There was a significant difference between the total scores of the Nurse Job Motivation Scale and educational status, willingly choosing the unit where the nurses work, being satisfied with the unit where they job, and finding the nursing profession suitable for themselves (p

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study documents the lived experience of nurses coping with the double burden of external demands and internal stressors while providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. METHODS This qualitative study interviewed 18 female nurses who worked in the COVID wards of a major hospital in India. The one-on-one telephonic interviews were conducted with respondents based on three broad open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS Three themes were identified: (i) external demands such as availability, utilization, and management of resources; (ii) internal psychological stressors, such as emotional exhaustion, moral anguish, and social isolation; and (iii) promotive factors such as the roles of the state and society, and of patients and attendants CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that despite limited resources and facilities, nurses ploughed through the pandemic with their resilience and the state's and society's promotive factors. To improve health care delivery in this crisis, the role of the state and healthcare system has become important to prevent the workforce from crumbling. The sustained attention of the state and society is required to reinstate motivation among nurses by raising the collective value of their contribution and capability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to increase understanding regarding healthcare provider experiences with psychological trauma, moral injury, and institutional betrayal, both over the lifetime and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS The study employed a cross-sectional design to understand traumatic experiences, moral injury, and institutional betrayal among medical and mental health providers. Participants were asked to identify an index trauma, and experiences were coded qualitatively using categories for traumatic events, moral injury, and institutional betrayal. RESULTS Results revealed that experiences of trauma, moral injury, and institutional betrayal were common in relation to the pandemic, as were prepandemic histories of traumatic exposures. Findings indicate that trauma exposure was a work hazard for healthcare providers during the pandemic, which could result in negative long-term mental health outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Future research is needed to explore potential long-term negative outcomes among healthcare providers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to characterise the physical and psychological well-being of maternal and newborn healthcare workers (MNHCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN Observational repeated cross-sectional study. SETTING An online questionnaire was distributed to MNHCWs around the globe in three separate rounds from March 2020 to March 2021. PARTICIPANTS Total samples of N=1357 (round 1) and N=420 (round 3) primarily consisted of doctors, midwives and nurses in maternal and newborn specialties. Samples represented all WHO regions, with 33% (round 1) and 42% (round 3) from low- or middle-income countries (LMICs). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Responses from rounds 1 (March-June 2020) and 3 (December 2020-March 2021) were analysed to measure self-reported levels of relative stress and workplace protection from COVID-19, while associated factors were determined through multivariable ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS In round 1, 90% of MNHCWs reported increased stress levels and 45% reported insufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) access. Nurses and physicians were less likely to report increased stress than midwives at the pandemic onset. Factors associated with increased stress included being female, being from an LMIC and insufficient PPE. In round 3, 75% reported similar or increased stress while 10% reported insufficient PPE. In both rounds, over 50% of MNHCWs felt relatively or completely unprotected from COVID-19 in the workplace. Those from LMICs were more likely to report feeling unprotected, while receiving organisational information that valued safety was associated with better feelings of protection in the workplace. CONCLUSIONS Among our international sample of MNHCWs, we observed high rates of self-reported stress increase at the start of the pandemic with persistence or increase up to a year later. High rates of feeling unprotected persisted even as PPE became more available. These results may inform interventions needed to support and protect MNHCWs during this and future pandemics.

Abstract
Within the context of the novel coronavirus pandemic and new challenges to a resource-constrained public healthcare system, many healthcare workers in South Africa have faced numerous stressors that have compromised their mental health. While the current literature on COVID-19 in South Africa highlights the widespread psychosocial stress experienced by healthcare workers during the pandemic, little is known about the coping strategies utilized to continue service delivery and maintain one's mental health and well-being during this ongoing public health emergency. In this study, we sought to explore the coping strategies used by healthcare workers employed in the public psychiatric care system in southern Gauteng, South Africa during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Psychiatric healthcare workers (n = 55) employed in three tertiary public hospitals and two specialized psychiatric facilities participated in in-depth interviews between July 2020 and March 2021. We found that coping strategies spanned multi-level and multi-systemic efforts. Intrapersonal, interpersonal, material, and structural coping were mapped across individual, family, and hospital systems. The most commonly utilized coping strategies included positive mindsets and reappraisal, social support systems, and COVID-19 specific protections. Findings also highlighted the contextual and interconnected nature of coping. Healthcare workers applied multiple coping strategies to combat the negative mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Better understanding these strategies, contexts in which they are employed, and how they interact can be used to develop evidence-based interventions to support healthcare workers experiencing healthcare-related stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Staff in the National Health Service (NHS) are under considerable strain, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; whilst NHS Trusts provide a variety of health and wellbeing support services, there has been little research investigating staff perceptions of these services. We interviewed 48 healthcare workers from 18 NHS Trusts in England about their experiences of workplace health and wellbeing support during the pandemic. Reflexive thematic analysis identified that perceived stigma around help-seeking, and staffing shortages due to wider socio-political contexts such as austerity, were barriers to using support services. Visible, caring leadership at all levels (CEO to line managers), peer support, easily accessible services, and clear communication about support offers were enablers. Our evidence suggests Trusts should have active strategies to improve help-seeking, such as manager training and peer support facilitated by building in time for this during working hours, but this will require long-term strategic planning to address workforce shortages.

Abstract
Background While attention has been drawn to the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers generally, little is known regarding mental health changes over time in frontline and non-frontline physiotherapists during this period. Objectives Our study aimed to investigate differences in mental health trends among frontline and non-frontline physiotherapists across three time periods during the pandemic. Method Survey-based data were collected from 366 practising physiotherapists across three time periods during the pandemic (Time 1: n = 171; Time 2: n = 101; Time 3: n = 94). Variations in reported mental health of frontline and non-frontline respondents generally and over time were analysed using comparative statistical techniques and trend analysis. Results Frontline physiotherapists reported significantly lower levels of general mental well-being and resilience, and significantly higher levels of burnout and maladaptive strategy use. Only frontline physiotherapists' general mental well-being and resilience decreased over time, whereas depression decreased over time for both groups. Anxiety decreased over time for non-frontline physiotherapists but initially decreased and then increased for frontline physiotherapists. Burnout increased initially and then decreased for non-frontline physiotherapists. Conclusion Varying mental health trends were found between frontline and non-frontline physiotherapists over time. Nuanced mental health interventions that consider the period of the pandemic and degree of exposure are needed. Clinical implications Understandings of the mental health trajectories experienced by physiotherapists across the pandemic can inform long-term, targeted interventions that effectively enhance well-being, retention, and sustainability of practitioners, and thus the care delivered, in the healthcare system.

Abstract
Research focused on elucidating moral injury amongst healthcare workers (HCWs) is essential due to the deep connection with morality and individuals' overall wellbeing. Examining moral injury provides an avenue through which researchers can connect individual experiences with systemic level causes (i.e., structural power imbalances between clinicians and health systems) to better study workplace wellbeing. The omnipresence of the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the need to study moral injury. This paper describes a systematic review conducted using PRISMA-P guidelines to answer the question, "what is the association between moral injury and professional wellbeing and mental health amongst healthcare workers." Twelve databases were searched to identify specified studies. This study's criteria included: (1) articles published through December 2022; (2) qualitative and quantitative empirical studies; (3) articles written in English; (4) articles including moral injury; and (5) articles including at minimum one other measure of professional or personal wellbeing. The initial search produced 248 articles, and 18 articles were ultimately included in the final review. To confirm that no articles were left out of this study, the first author of each included article was contacted to inquire about any additional works that met the inclusion criteria of this study. The elements of the 18 included articles described in this review are discussed. The results indicate that moral injury is associated with both professional wellbeing factors and mental health outcomes. Further theoretical development, including (professional- and identity-based) exploratory research on moral injury, and evidenced-based interventions for moral injury are needed.

Abstract
This paper reports findings from a qualitative study conducted on the Need for Social work interventions in the Emergency Department (ED) at a large tertiary care center in India. The emergency department is an important social work intervention point for individuals with various psychiatric, medical, and social needs who have little or no additional interaction with social services. Social workers are specially trained to understand the impact of social factors on health outcomes and provide interventions that address social barriers to improving health and accessing community resources; social workers are well prepared to provide services in the emergency department. However, limited research is available to understand the impact of psychosocial services in the emergency department. We aimed to identify areas which require integrated social work services and coordination to address the psychosocial issues within the ED. Interviews with 10 healthcare workers are analyzed thematically. Recurring themes throughout the interviews confirm the need for providing social work interventions to ensure the medical, psychological, and social care needs in the emergency department.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Insomnia and depression are common mental health problems reported by mental health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Network analysis is a fine-grained approach used to examine associations between psychiatric syndromes at a symptom level. This study was designed to elucidate central symptoms and bridge symptoms of a depression-insomnia network among psychiatric practitioners in China. The identification of particularly important symptoms via network analysis provides an empirical foundation for targeting specific symptoms when developing treatments for comorbid insomnia and depression within this population. METHODS A total of 10,516 psychiatric practitioners were included in this study. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were used to estimate prevalence rates of insomnia and depressive symptoms, respectively. Analyses also generated a network model of insomnia and depression symptoms in the sample. RESULTS Prevalence rates of insomnia (ISI total score ≥8), depression (PHQ-9 total score ≥5) and comorbid insomnia and depression were 22.2% (95% confidence interval: 21.4-22.9%), 28.5% (95% confidence interval: 27.6-29.4%), and 16.0% (95% confidence interval: 15.3-16.7%), respectively. Network analysis revealed that "Distress caused by sleep difficulties" (ISI7) and "Sleep maintenance" (ISI2) had the highest strength centrality, followed by "Motor dysfunction" (PHQ8) and "Sad mood" (PHQ2). Furthermore, the nodes "Sleep dissatisfaction" (ISI4), "Fatigue" (PHQ4), and "Motor dysfunction" (PHQ8) had the highest bridge strengths in linking depression and insomnia communities. CONCLUSIONS Both central and bridge symptoms (ie, Distress caused by sleep difficulties, Sleep maintenance, Motor dysfunction, Sad mood, Sleep dissatisfaction, and Fatigue) should be prioritized when testing preventive measures and specific treatments to address comorbid insomnia and depression among psychiatric practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to systematically review the existing literature examining the prevalence of anxiety among hospital staff and identifying the contributing factors to address the complications of this disorder and develop effective programmes for reducing the complications of this mental health problem. METHODS We searched the electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar from January 2020 to February 2021. To perform meta-analysis, the random effects model was used. To assess the statistical heterogeneity of the included studies, the I2 index was used, and 95% CI was estimated. Data analysis was performed by R software. RESULTS In the final analysis, 46 articles with the total sample size of 61 551 hospital staff members were included. Accordingly, anxiety prevalence among healthcare workers (HCWs) was 26.1% (95% CI 19% to 34.6%). The prevalence rates of anxiety in health technicians and medical students were 39% (95% CI 13% to 73%) and 36% (95% CI 15% to 65%), respectively, indicating a much higher prevalence than other hospital staff members. Furthermore, a positive significant relationship between prevalence of anxiety among HCWs and their age was approved (p<0.001). The prevalence rate of anxiety was higher among women 37.7% (95% CI 25.4% to 51.8%) than men 27.2% (95% CI 18.2% to 38.6%). CONCLUSION The findings show a moderately high prevalence rate of anxiety in hospital staff. Due to the high prevalence of this mental health problem in health technicians, medical students and frontline health workers, it is highly suggested that healthcare institutions offer mental health programmes for these working groups in order to appropriately manage anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on intensive care nurses personal and professional well-being. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY/DESIGN A descriptive, qualitative design was used. Two nurse researchers conducted one-on-one interviews via Zoom or TEAMS using a semi-structured interview guide. SETTING Thirteen nurses who were working in an intensive care unit in the United States participated in the study. A convenience sample of nurses who completed a survey in the larger parent study provided an email and were contacted by the research team to participate in interviews to discuss their experiences. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES An inductive approach to content analysis was used to develop categories. FINDINGS Five major categories emerged from the interviews: (1) We are not heroes, (2) inadequate support, (3) helplessness, (4) exhaustion, and (5) Nurses the second victim. CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a physical and mental health toll on intensive care nurses. The impact of the pandemic on personal and professional well-being has serious implications for retaining and expanding the nursing workforce. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE This work highlights the importance for bedside nurses to advocate for systemic change to improve the work environment. It is imperative for nurses to have effective training including evidence-based practice and clinical skills. There needs to be systems in place to monitor and support nurses' mental health and encourage bedside nurses to use self-care methods and practices to prevent anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and burnout.

Abstract
Background Healthcare workers (HCWs) at infectious disease departments have held the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to maintaining the employees' wellbeing that may be used to increase preparedness for future pandemics within ID Departments. Methods In September 2020, a web-based survey on demographics and work environment was distributed to all HCWs at the Infectious Disease Department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Results were compared with a pre-COVID-19 survey from October 2019. A quantitative analysis of the overall effects of the pandemic on the working conditions of HCWs was conducted; in addition, a qualitative content analysis of open-ended responses was performed. Results In total, 222 and 149 HCWs completed the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 surveys (84 and 54% response rate), respectively. Overall, we found significant changes regarding increased workload, lack of emotional support in stressful work situations, and inability to recover after shifts. These factors correlated both with younger age and concern of becoming infected. The open-ended answers (n = 103, 69%) revealed five generic categories (Workload; Organizational support; Worry and ethical stress; Capability; and Cooperation and unity) with a total of 14 identified factors representing plausible individual and organizational-level barriers or facilitators to sustained employee wellbeing. Conclusion Younger HCWs as well as those expressing worries about contracting the infection were found to be particularly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic and these groups may require additional support in future outbreaks. Factors both increasing and decreasing the pandemic-induced negative health consequences for HCWs were identified; this knowledge may be utilized in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify stressors faced by essential workers amid the coronavirus disease pandemic and effective interventions mitigating these stressors. METHODS We reviewed literature on psychosocial, organizational, and environmental stressors faced by essential workers during the pandemic, the consequences of those stressors, and interventions to improve worker health and well-being. FINDINGS Stressors included elevated risk of coronavirus disease 2019 exposure, fear of spreading the virus, lack of social and organizational supports, and financial insecurity. Negative outcomes included burnout, depression, and high turnover. Promising interventions included robust safety protocols, increased wages, childcare benefits, enhanced access to mental health services, and frequent leadership communications. CONCLUSION Stress has taken a heavy toll on essential workers' physical and emotional health, productivity, and job satisfaction. To effectively protect Total Worker Health, employers should adopt evidence-based interventions promoting psychosocial, organizational, and environmental health and safety.
