Abstract
The current study focused on analyzing the effect of different types of bulking agents and other factors on fed-batch composting and the structure of microbial communities. The results indicated that the introduction of bulking agents to fed-batch composting significantly improved composting efficiency as well as compost product quality. In particular, using green waste as a bulking agent, the compost products would achieve good performance in the following indicators: moisture (3.16%), weight loss rate (85.26%), and C/N ratio (13.98). The significant difference in moisture of compost products (p < 0.05) was observed in different sizes of bulking agent (green waste), which was because the voids in green waste significantly affected the capacity of the water to permeate. Meanwhile, controlling the size of green waste at 3-6 mm, the following indicators would show great performance from the compost products: moisture (3.12%), organic matter content (63.93%), and electrical conductivity (EC) (5.37 mS/cm). According to 16S rRNA sequencing, the relative abundance (RA) of thermophilic microbes increased as reactor temperature rose in fed-batch composting, among which Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Basidiomycota, and Rasamsonia were involved in cellulose and lignocellulose degradation.

Abstract
The extensive research examines the current state of agricultural food supply chains, with focus on waste management in Bandung Regency, Indonesia. The study reveals that a significant proportion of food within the agricultural supply chain goes to waste and discusses the various challenges and complexities involved in managing food waste. The research presents a conceptual model based on the ADKAR change management paradigm to promote waste utilization, increase awareness and change people's behaviors. The model emphasizes the importance of creating awareness, fostering desire, providing knowledge, implementing changes, and reinforcing and monitoring the transformation process. It also addresses the challenges, barriers, and drivers that influence waste utilization in the agricultural supply chain, highlighting the need for economic incentives and a shift in public awareness to drive meaningful change. Ultimately, this study serves as a comprehensive exploration of food waste management in Bandung Regency, shedding light on the complexities of the issue and offering a systematic approach to transition towards more sustainable waste utilization practices.

Abstract
The biotransformation of food waste (FW) to bioenergy has attracted considerable research attention as a means to address the energy crisis and waste disposal problems. To this end, a promising technique is two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD), in which the FW is transformed to biohythane, a gaseous mixture of biomethane and biohydrogen. This review summarises the main characteristics of FW and describes the basic principle of TSAD. Moreover, the factors influencing the TSAD performance are identified, and an overview of the research status; economic aspects; and strategies such as pre-treatment, co-digestion, and regulation of microbial consortia to increase the biohythane yield from TSAD is provided. Additionally, the challenges and future considerations associated with the treatment of FW by TSAD are highlighted. This paper can provide valuable reference for the improvement and widespread implementation of TSAD-based FW treatment.

Abstract
The development of the chemical industry has led to a boom in daily consumption and convenience, but has also led to the release of large amounts of organic pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, plastics, pesticides, and dyes. These pollutants are often recalcitrant to degradation in the environment, whereby the most problematic compounds may even lead to carcinogenesis, teratogenesis and mutagenesis in animals and humans after accumulation in the food chain. Microbial degradation of organic pollutants is efficient and environmentally friendly, which is why it is considered an ideal method. Numerous studies have shown that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a powerful platform for the remediation of environmental pollution with organic chemicals due to its diverse metabolic networks and its ability to secrete biosurfactants to make hydrophobic substrates more bioavailable, thereby facilitating degradation. In this paper, the mechanisms and methods of the bioremediation of environmental organic pollutants (EOPs) by P. aeruginosa are reviewed. The challenges of current studies are highlighted, and new strategies for future research are prospected. Metabolic pathways and critical enzymes must be further deciphered, which is significant for the construction of a bioremediation platform based on this powerful organism.

Abstract
The food waste was very difficult to treat in a proper way since its high-organic matter. The novel biohythane (H2 + CH4) production from high-strength industry food waste hydrolysate in two steps anaerobic well mixed batch bioreactor was carried out in this study using cultivated microflora. The temperature was controlled at 37 °C and initial substrate concentration of industrial food waste hydrolysate varied from 60, 80, 100, and 120 g COD/L, respectively. The pH, TS, VS, and SCOD were analyzed from the influent and effluent samples. These analytical parameters showed the correlations between the biogas production rates and yields in the batch fermentation system. This study was the first time to use the industry food waste hydrolysate which was collected from the subcritical water hydrolysis process. In this study, the optimal biohydrogen and biomethane yield production by using suspended cells were 0.65 mL H2/g COD and 203.72 mL CH4/g COD where the initial substrate concentrations of total COD and SCOD were 60 g/L and 39.80 g/L, respectively. Abstract
The generation of food waste (FW) is increasing at an alarming rate, contributing to a total of 32% of all the waste produced globally. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective method for dealing with organic wastes of various compositions, like FW. Waste valorization into value-added products has increased due to the conversion of FW into biogas using AD technology. A variety of pathways are adopted by microbes to avoid unfavorable conditions in AD, including competition between sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane (CH4)-forming bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria decompose organic matter to produce biogas, a digester gas. The composition depends on the type of raw material and the method by which the digestion process is conducted. Studies have shown that the biogas produced by AD contains 65-75% CH4 and 35-45% carbon dioxide (CO2). Methanothrix soehngenii and Methanosaeta concilii are examples of species that convert acetate to CH4 and CO2. Methanobacterium bryantii, Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, and Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus are examples of species that produce CH4 from hydrogen and CO2. Methanobacterium formicicum, Methanobrevibacter smithii, and Methanococcus voltae are examples of species that consume formate, hydrogen, and CO2 and produce CH4. The popularity of AD has increased for the development of biorefinery because it is seen as a more environmentally acceptable alternative in comparison to physico-chemical techniques for resource and energy recovery. The review examines the possibility of using accessible FW to produce important value-added products such as organic acids (acetate/butyrate), biopolymers, and other essential value-added products.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of utilizing lactic acid fermentation (LAF) as storage method of food waste (FW) prior to dark fermentation (DF). LAF of FW was carried out in batches at six temperatures (4 °C, 10 °C, 23 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C) for 15 days followed by biological hydrogen potential (BHP) tests. Different storage temperatures resulted in different metabolites distribution, with either lactate or ethanol being dominant (159.2 ± 20.6 mM and 234.4 ± 38.2 mM respectively), but no negative impact on BHP (averaging at 94.6 ± 25.1 mL/gVS). Maximum hydrogen production rate for stored FW improved by at least 57%. Microbial analysis showed dominance of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) namely Lactobacillus sp., Lactococcus sp., Weisella sp., Streptococcus sp. and Bacillus sp. after LAF. Clostridium sp. emerged after DF, co-existing with LAB. Coupling LAF as a storage method was demonstrated as a novel strategy of FW management for DF, for a wide range of temperatures.

Abstract
Food waste is an attractive feedstock for Anaerobic Digestion due to its high biodegradability and moisture content. Nevertheless, due to its complex structure and composition, methane yield is typically compromised with 50-60% of the theoretical maximum obtained. The well-known limitation of the hydrolysis step can be circumvented by adopting feedstock pre-treatments, such as microwave irradiation. It improves solubilization of various FW components making them more readily available for the microorganisms and reducing AD process duration. In this work different heating rates (7.8, 3.9 and 1.9 °C/min) and temperatures (85, 115, 145, 175 °C) were applied when pre-treating food waste as a substrate for AD. Increase in the solubilization of organic matter in the form of Soluble Chemical Oxygen Demand was the most significative change in FW characteristics after pre-treatment, with final temperature of 175 °C and heating rate of 3.9 °C showing a 73.19% increment. Nevertheless, process performance of AD of MW FW was optimum at 85 °C 7.8 ramp, showing no intermediate products accumulation, up to 77% more methane produced in the first week of digestion compared to the other conditions tested and reduction of 96.36% on the lag phase duration, compared to the control. On the other hand, samples treated at 175 °C, regardless of heating rate, consistently showed poor process performance, with low methane yield, possibly due to the formation of hard-to-digest compounds. This work underlines the importance of adjusting microwave temperature and power when pre-treating FW for biomethane production so the process is optimized.

Abstract
The recovery of biomass energy from food waste through anaerobic digestion as an alternative to fossil energy is of great significance for the development of environmental sustainability and the circular economy. However, a substantial number of food additives (e.g., salt, allicin, capsaicin, allyl isothiocyanate, monosodium glutamate, and nonnutritive sweeteners) are present in food waste, and their interactions with anaerobic digestion might affect energy recovery, which is typically overlooked. This work describes the current understanding of the occurrence and fate of food additives in anaerobic digestion of food waste. The biotransformation pathways of food additives during anaerobic digestion are well discussed. In addition, important discoveries in the effects and underlying mechanisms of food additives on anaerobic digestion are reviewed. The results showed that most of the food additives had negative effects on anaerobic digestion by deactivating functional enzymes, thus inhibiting methane production. By reviewing the response of microbial communities to food additives, we can further improve our understanding of the impact of food additives on anaerobic digestion. Intriguingly, the possibility that food additives may promote the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, and thus threaten ecology and public health, is highlighted. Furthermore, strategies for mitigating the effects of food additives on anaerobic digestion are outlined in terms of optimal operation conditions, effectiveness, and reaction mechanisms, among which chemical methods have been widely used and are effective in promoting the degradation of food additives and increasing methane production. This review aims to advance our understanding of the fate and impact of food additives in anaerobic digestion and to spark novel research ideas for optimizing anaerobic digestion of organic solid waste.

Abstract
Sludge is among the most important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which would cause potential environmental risks with the sludge utilization. Currently, anaerobic digestion (AD) is effective to simultaneously realize the resource recovery and pollutants removal, including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and various pretreatments are used to enhance the performance. Recently, plentiful publications have focused on the effects of pretreatment on ARGs removal, but the contradictory results are often obtained, and a comprehensive understanding of the research progress and mechanisms is essential. This study summarizes various pretreatment techniques for improving AD efficiency and ARGs reduction, investigates promising performance in ARGs removal when pretreatments combined with AD, and analyzes the potential mechanisms accounting for ARGs fates. The results showed that although thermal hydrolysis pretreatment showed the best performance in ARGs reduction during the pretreatment process, the significant rebound of ARGs would occur in the subsequent AD process. Conversely, ozone pretreatment and alkali pretreatment had no significant effect on ARGs abundance in the pretreatment stage, but could enhance ARGs removal by 15.6-24.3 % in the subsequent AD. Considering the efficiency and economic effectiveness, free nitrous acid pretreatment would be a promising and feasible option, which could enhance methane yield and ARGs removal by up to 27 % and 74.5 %, respectively. Currently, the factors determining ARGs fates during pretreatment and AD processes included the shift of microbial community, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and environmental factors. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the fate of ARGs and pretreatment technologies could be helpful for systematically evaluating various pretreatments and facilitating the development of emerging and effective pretreatment techniques. Moreover, given the effectiveness, economic efficiency and environmental safety, we called for the applications of modern analysis approaches such as metagenomic and machine learning on the optimization of pretreatment conditions and revealing underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Hydrogen production from food waste by coupling dark fermentation (DF) and microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) was studied. Metabolic patterns in DF, their effects on MECs efficiency, and the energy output of the coupling were investigated. Mesophilic temperature and acidic pH 5.5 resulted in 72 ± 20 mL H2/g CODin and a butyrate-enriched profile (C2/C4, 0.5-0.6) contrasting with an acetate-enriched profile (C2/C4, 1.8-1.9) and 36 ± 10 mL H2/g CODin at pH 7. Assessment in series of the DF effluents in MECs resulted in a higher hydrogen yield (566-733 mL H2/g CODin) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) removal (84-95%) obtained from pH 7 effluents compared to pH 5.5 effluents (173-186 mL H2/g CODin and 29-59%). Finally, the output energy was lower in DF at pH 7, however, these effluents retrieved the highest energy in the MEC, showing the importance of process pH and VFAs profile to balance the coupling.

Abstract
A large amount of household food waste (HFW) is produced yearly, resulting in environmental problems and financial burdens. Bio-production of lactic acid (LA), a high value-added platform chemical, from HFW by anaerobic fermentation is a promising way of resource recovery. However, the LA production yield from HFW is low. This paper compared several pretreatment methods (hydrothermal pretreatment, chemical pretreatment, and combined hydrothermal and chemical pretreatment) to improve LA production from HFW. The result showed that the combined pretreatment (alkali-thermal pretreatment at pH 10 and 120 °C) significantly increased the LA production than single hydrothermal and chemical pretreatment. The pretreatment process promoted the dissolution of organics, especially the polysaccharides and amino acids, and further influenced the LA production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469. Among the amino acids, aspartic acid (Asp), threonine (Thr), glutamic acid (Glu), glycine (Gly), alanine (Ala), cystine (Cys), valine (Val), isoleucine (Ile), arginine (Arg), and proline (Pro) significantly correlated with LA concentration.

Abstract
Food losses (FL) and waste (FW) occur throughout the food supply chain. These residues are disposed of on landfills producing environmental issues due to pollutants released into the air, water, and soil. Several research efforts have focused on upgrading FL and FW in a portfolio of added-value products and energy vectors. Among the most relevant research advances, biotechnological upgrading of these residues via fermentation has been demonstrated to be a potential valorization alternative. Despite the multiple investigations performed on the conversion of FL and FW, a lack of comprehensive and systematic literature reviews evaluating the potential of fermentative processes to upgrade different food residues has been identified. Therefore, this article reviews the use of FL and FW in fermentative processes considering the composition, operating conditions, platforms, fermentation product application, and restrictions. This review provides the framework of food residue fermentation based on reported applications, experimental, and theoretical data. Moreover, this review provides future research ideas based on the analyzed information. Thus, potential applications and restrictions of the FL and FW used for fermentative processes are highlighted. In the end, food residues fermentation must be considered a mandatory step toward waste minimization, a circular economy, and the development of more sustainable production and consumption patterns.

Abstract
Kitchen waste (KW) is frequently available for free or with a negative cost due to its huge production. It contains a large proportion of organic substances, especially fermentable sugars, which can be used for bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHA) synthesis. Nevertheless, due to the difficulties in processing, various pre-treatments of KW are being investigated to enhance the concentration of simple sugars released during its hydrolysis. The effective use of KW will help in minimizing the issues of its inappropriate disposal. However, the review on KW to bioplastic synthesis is rarely reported in the literature. Hence, this particular review provides a comprehensive summary of the updated research developments in KW valorization and its potency as a feedstock for PHAs synthesis. Additionally, the impacts of KW, its availability, the necessary pre-treatments for the biopolymerization process, as well as the prospects and challenges for industrially generating sustainable PHAs, are critically discussed.

Abstract
With the continuous rise of food waste (FW) throughout the world, a research effort to reveal its potential for bioenergy production is surging. There is a lack of harmonized information and publications available that evaluate the state-of-advance for FW-derived methane production process, particularly from an engineering and sustainability point of view. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has shown remarkable efficiency in the bioconversion of FW to methane. This paper reviews the current research progress, gaps, and prospects in pre-AD, AD, and post-AD processes of FW-derived methane production. Briefly, the review highlights innovative FW collection and optimization routes such as AI that enable efficient FW valorization processes. As weather changes and the FW sources may affect the AD efficiency, it is important to assess the spatio-seasonal variations and microphysical properties of the FW to be valorized. In that case, developing weather-resistant bioreactors and cost-effective mechanisms to modify the raw substrate morphology is necessary. An AI-guided reactor could have high performance when the internal environment of the centralized operation is monitored in real-time and not susceptible to changes in FW variety. Monitoring solvent degradation and fugitive gases during biogas purification is a challenging task, especially for large-scale plants. Furthermore, this review links scientific evidence in the field with full-scale case studies from different countries. It also highlights the potential contribution of ADFW to carbon neutrality efforts. Regarding future research needs, in addition to the smart collection scheme, attention should be paid to the management and utilization of FW impurities, to ensure sustainable AD operations.

Abstract
Solid waste is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) today. The carbon footprint of landfills also has a large impact on global warming. Therefore, it is becoming more urgent to study the possibility of better environmentally friendly approaches for solid waste management and its safe disposal. The digestion of solid waste is a biological process that breaks down the organic content of the solid waste and thus stabilizes it. It also allows the recovery of valuable resources (such as biogas) and the utilization of stabilized waste in various industries. In this study, six substrates were studied to determine their biomethane potential (BMP) in anaerobic digestion. The substrates were fermented and digested anaerobically, and the biogas production was measured. The methane yield of food waste substrates had a higher methane yield between 354 and 347 mL/g-TCOD, and a biodegradability of 89–87%. Wastewater sludge substrates yielded between 324 and 288 mL/g-TCOD with a biodegradability of 81–73%. A kinetics analysis using first-order and Gompertz models was performed for biodegradation and methane production.

Abstract
A waste-based circular economy approach is proposed for the phycoremediation of an X-ray developer (XD) solution. The present study emphasizes the utilization of food waste (FW) and agri-compost media (ACM) as growth media for D. armatus for the subsequent bioremediation potential of XD solution-coupled lipid production. A 3:1 dilution (FW/ACM: XD.) was found to be suitable for the phycoremediation study of XD solution towards the % removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and silver. The phycoremediation studies of diluted XD solution in FW demonstrated a 74.50% BOD removal, 81.69% COD removal, and 54.70% removal of silver. The growth of D. armatus in diluted XD solution in food waste was 1.37% lipid content. The phycoremediation of diluted XD solution with ACM resulted in 83.05% BOD removal, 88.88% COD removal and 56.30% silver removal with the concomitant lipid production of 1.42%. The optimal bioremediation coupled lipid production of D. armatus was observed on the 19th day of D. armatus cultivation in the developer effluent, along with food waste and agri-compost media, for 31 days. The study suggests a sustainable utilization of waste (FW and ACM) as a nutritive medium to scrutinize the phycoremediation of XD solution with a concomitant lipid production that can open up new avenues in phycoremediation coupled energy commodities production.

Abstract
Energy crisis and increasing rigorous management standards pose significant challenges for solid waste management worldwide. Several emerging diseases such as COVID-19 aggravated the already complex solid waste management crisis, especially sewage sludge and food waste streams, because of the increasingly large production year by year. As mature waste disposal technologies, landfills, incineration, composting, and some other methods are widespread for solid wastes management. This paper reviews recent advances in key sewage sludge disposal technologies. These include incineration, anaerobic digestion, and valuable products oriented-conversion. Food waste disposal technologies comprised of thermal treatment, fermentation, value-added product conversion, and composting have also been described. The hot topic and dominant research foci of each area are summarized, simultaneously compared with conventional technologies in terms of organic matter degradation or conversion performance, energy generation, and renewable resources production. Future perspectives of each technology that include issues not well understood and predicted challenges are discussed with a positive effect on the full-scale implementation of the discussed disposal methods.

Abstract
Food waste conversion/valorization to produce bio-based chemicals plays a key role toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Food waste valorization to renewable chemicals is thus an attractive and eco-friendly approach to handling food waste. The production of platform chemicals from food waste is crucial for making highly value-added renewable chemicals. However, earlier reviews dealing with food waste valorization to produce value-added chemicals have emphasized the enhancement of methane, hydrogen, and ethanol production. Along these lines, the existing methods of food waste to produce platform chemicals (e.g., volatile fatty acids, glucose, hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, lactic acid, and succinic acid) through physical, chemical, and enzymatic pretreatments, hydrolysis, fermentation, and hydrothermal conversion are extensively reviewed. Finally, the challenges faced under these methods are discussed, along with suggestions for future research on platform chemical production from food waste.

Abstract
Food waste (FW) is not only a major social, nutritional and environmental issue, but also an underutilized resource with significant energy, which has not been fully explored currently. Considering co-digestion can adjust carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) of the feedstock and improve the synergetic interactions among microorganisms, anaerobic co-digestion (AnCoD) is then becoming an emerging approach to achieve higher energy recovery from FW while ensuring the stability of the system. To obtain higher economic gain from such biodegradable wastes, increasing attention has been paid on optimizing the system configuration or applying enzymatic hydrolysis before digesting FW. A better understanding on the potentiality of correlating enzymatic pretreatment and AnCoD operated in various system configuration would enhance the bioresource recovery from FW and increase revenue through treating this organic waste. Specifically, the biobased chemicals outputs from FW-related co-digestion system with different configuration were firstly compared in this review. A deep discussion concerning the challenges for achieving bioresources recovery from FW co-digestion systems with enzymatic pretreatment was then given. Recommendations for future studies regarding FW co-digestion were then proposed at last.

Abstract
Over the last few decades, the globe is facing tremendous effects due to the unnecessary piling of municipal solid waste among which food waste holds a greater portion. This practice not only affects the environment in terms of generating greenhouse gas emissions but when left dumped in landfills will also trigger poverty and malnutrition. This review focuses on the global trend in food waste management strategies involved in the effective utilization of food waste to produce various value-added products in a microbiology aspect, thereby diminishing the negative impacts caused by the unnecessary side effects of non-renewable energy sources. The review also detailed the efficiency of microorganisms in the production of various bio-energies as well. Further, recent attempts to the exploitation of genetically modified microorganisms in producing value-added products were enlisted. This also attempted to address food waste valorization techniques, the combined applications of various processes for an enhanced yield of different compounds, and addressed various challenges. Further, the current challenges involved in various processes and the effective measures to tackle them in the future have been addressed. Thus, the present review has successfully addressed the circular bio-economy in food waste valorization.

Abstract
As an alternative for commercial enzyme, crude enzyme of fungal mash could promote food waste (FW) hydrolysis, but its specific effects coupled pH adjusting on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) remains unknown. The crude enzyme produced from an Aspergillus awamori, named complex-amylase (CA), was added to short-term anaerobic system of FW fermentation. Results showed that adding CA significantly improved the solubility and degradability of biodegradable and non-biodegradable organics in FW, where the SCOD concentration with adding CA increased by 116.9% relative to the control but a marginal enhancement on VFAs yield. In contrast, adding CA combined with adjusting pH 8 markedly increased the VFAs production to 32.0 g COD/L, almost 10 times as much as the control. Besides, pH adjusting altered the metabolic pathway from lactate-type to butyrate-type. Adding CA coupled pH adjusting significant increase the component of butyrate compared with pH adjusting alone. Moreover, microbial community analysis indicated that adding CA reinforced proportion of the butyrate-producing bacteria (e.g., Dialister) under basic conditions, thus enhancing the butyrate metabolic pathways. This study demonstrated that fungal mash pretreatment coupled pH conditioning could be an economical way to enhance VFAs yield for FW valorization during anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract
This research investigated enhancing the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw via freeze-thaw pretreatment and assessed the physicochemical structural changes after this pretreatment. The enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cellulose and hemicellulose was enhanced, and hemicellulose was more susceptible to pretreatment. The highest enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cellulose and hemicellulose was 57.06 and 70.66%, respectively, at - 80 ℃ for 24 h and - 10 ℃ for 24 h, respectively, which were 2.23 and 3.13-fold higher than the control levels, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that transverse cracks appeared before longitudinal cracks with stronger pretreatment conditions, and holes were found in every sample after this pretreatment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that freeze-thaw pretreatment affected both the crystalline and amorphous regions and disrupted the hydrogen bonds within them. This study provides a physical pretreatment method to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw.

Abstract
Increased urbanization and industrialization accelerated demand for energy, large-scale waste output, and negative environmental consequences. Therefore, the implementation of an effective solid-waste-management (SWM) policy for the handling of food waste is of great importance. The global food waste generation is estimated at about 1.6 gigatons/yr which attributes to an economic revenue of 750 billion USD. It can be converted into high-value enzymes, surfactants, Poly-hydroxybutyrate, biofuels, etc. However, the heterogeneous composition of food with high organic load and varying moisture content makes their transformation into value-added products difficult. This review aims to bring forth the possibilities and repercussions of food waste management. The socio-economic challenges related to SWM are comprehensively discussed particularly in terms of environmental concern. The engineering aspect in the collection, storage, and biotransformation of food waste into useful value-added products such as biofuels, advanced biomaterials, bioactive compounds, and platform chemicals are critically reviewed for efficient food waste management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The complexity, toxicity and abundance of frying oil waste (FOW) render it difficult to be degraded biologically. The aim of the present work was to valorize FOW and investigate the potential use of the produced biosurfactant by Serratia marcescens N2 (Whole Genome sequencing accession ID SPSG00000000) as a biodetergent. RESULTS Serratia marcescens N2 demonstrated efficient valorization of FOW, using 1% peptone, 20% FOW and 8% inoculum size. Gene annotation showed the presence of serrawettin synthetase indicating that the produced biosurfactant was serrawettin. Zeta potential and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicate that the biosurfactant produced was a negatively charged lipopeptide. The biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 to 25.7 mN/m; its emulsification index was 90%. The valorization started after 1 h of incubation and reached a maximum of 83.3%. Gamma radiation was used to increase the biosurfactant yield from 9.4 to 19.2 g/L for non-irradiated and 1000 Gy irradiated cultures, respectively. It was noted that the biorecovery took place immediately as opposed to overnight storage required in conventional biosurfactant recovery. Both chemical and functional characteristics of the radiation induced biosurfactant did not change at low doses. The produced biosurfactant was used to wash oil stain; the highest detergency reached was 87% at 60 °C under stirring conditions for 500 Gy gamma assisted biorecovery. Skin irritation tests performed on experimental mice showed no inflammation. CONCLUSION This study was able to obtain a skin friendly effective biodetergent from low worth FOW using Serratia marcescens N2 with 83% efficient valorization using only peptone in the growth media unlike previous studies using complex media. Gamma radiation was for the first time experimented to assist biosurfactant recovery and doubling the yield without affecting the efficiency.

Abstract
The treatment of food waste digestate with high salinity is a big challenge. This paper evaluated the possibility of using black soldier fly larvae for food waste digestate disposal and insect protein production. Results showed that both digestates from hydrogen and methane fermentations were rich in protein and lipid contents, which benefited the BSFL cultivation. The BSFL reared on digestates from hydrogen and methane fermentations of food waste performed better in pre-pupal weight (19.12% and 41.13% higher, respectively), body length (3.62% and 18.21% higher, respectively) and crude protein contents (7.85% and 39.05% higher, respectively) than that reared on raw food waste. In addition, the maximum body weight growth rate (Rm) of BSFL cultivated on both digestates were 28.28% and 47.10% higher than that of BSFL cultivated on raw food waste, respectively. During BSFL cultivation, organic matter reduction between 40.97% and 46.07% were achieved. Digestates from hydrogen and methane fermentations represent favorable feeding substrates for BSFL cultivation. Using BSFL to treat AD digestate not only provides a digestate disposal approach, but also produces insect biomass and organic fertilizer as value-added byproducts, which shows tremendous potential in digestate disposal.

Abstract
Biohythane production through one-stage anaerobic digestion of sulfate-rich hydrolyzed tofu processing residue has been hampered by high H2S production. Herein, two-stage anaerobic digestion was investigated with the addition of molybdate (MoO42-; 0.24-3.63 g/L) and ferric chloride (FeCl3; 0.025-5.4 g/L) to the dark fermentation stage (DF) to improve biohythane production. DF supplemented with 1.21 g/L MoO42- increased hydrogen yield by 14.6% over the control (68.39 ml/g-VSfed), while FeCl3 had no effect. Furthermore, the maximum methane yields of methanogenic fermentation were 524.8 and 521.6 ml/g-VSfed with 3.63 g/L MoO42- and 0.6 g/L FeCl3 compared to 466.07 ml/g-VSfed of the control. The maximum yields of biohythane and energy were 796.7 ml/g-VSfed and 21.8 MJ/kg-VSfed with 0.6 g/L FeCl3 when the sulfate removal efficiency was 66.7%, and H2S content was limited at 0.08%. Therefore, adding 0.6 g/L FeCl3 is the most beneficial in improving energy recovery and sulfate removal with low H2S content.

Abstract
Lactic acid is a valuable compound used in several industrial processes such as polymers, emulsifiers manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic formulations. The present study aims to evaluate the potential use of food waste to produce lactic acid through fermentation, both by indigenous microbiota and by the bio-augmentation with two lactic acid bacteria, namely Lactobacillus plantarum BS17 and Lactobacillus casei BP2. Fermentation was studied both in batch and continuously fed anaerobic reactors at mesophilic conditions and a Response Surface Methodology approach was used to optimize the bioprocess performance and determine the environmental parameters (namely pH and time) that lead to the enhancement of lactic acid production during the batch fermentation by indigenous microorganisms. Results revealed an optimum set of conditions for lactic acid production at a pH value of 6.5 and a fermentation period of 3.5 days at 37 °C. Under these conditions lactic acid production reached a value of 23.07 g/L, which was very similar to the mathematically predicted ones, thus verifying the accuracy of the experimental design. This optimum set of conditions was further employed to examine the production of lactic acid under continuous fermentation operation. Furthermore, concentrations of volatile fatty acids and ethanol were monitored and found to be relatively low, with ethanol being the dominant by-product of fermentation, indicating the presence of heterofermentative bacteria in the food wastes. A final step of downstream process was performed resulting in the successful recovery of lactic acid with purity over 90%.

Enhanced Fermentative Hydrogen Production from Food Waste in Continuous Reactor after Butyric Acid Treatment. ENERGIES 2022. Abstract
End-product accumulation during dark fermentation leads to process instability and hydrogen production inhibition. To overcome this constraint, microbial community adaptation to butyric acid can induce acid tolerance and thus enhance the hydrogen yields; however, adaptation and selection of appropriate microbial communities remains uncertain when dealing with complex substrates in a continuous fermentation mode. To address this question, a reactor fed in continuous mode with food waste (organic loading rate of 60 gVS·L·d−1; 12 h hydraulic retention time) was first stressed for 48 h with increasing concentrations of butyric acid (up to 8.7 g·L−1). Performances were compared with a control reactor (unstressed) for 13 days. During 6 days in a steady-state, the pre-stressed reactor produced 2.2 ± 0.2 LH2·L·d−1, which was 48% higher than in the control reactor (1.5 ± 0.2 LH2·L·d−1). The pretreatment also affected the metabolites’ distribution. The pre-stressed reactor presented a higher production of butyric acid (+44%) achieving up to 3.8 ± 0.3 g·L−1, a lower production of lactic acid (−56%), and an enhancement of substrate conversion (+9%). The performance improvement was attributed to the promotion of Clostridium guangxiense, a hydrogen -producer, with a relative abundance increasing from 22% in the unstressed reactor to 52% in the stressed reactor.

Abstract
Agricultural residues play a pivotal role in meeting the growing energy and bulk chemicals demand and food security of society. There is global concern about the utilization of fossil-based fuels and chemicals which create serious environmental problems. Biobased sustainable fuels can afford energy and fuels for future generations. Agro-industrial waste materials can act as the alternative way for generating bioenergy and biochemicals strengthening low carbon economy. Processing of pineapple generates about 60% of the weight of the original pineapple fruit in the form of peel, core, crown end, and pomace that can be converted into bioenergy sources like bioethanol, biobutanol, biohydrogen, and biomethane along with animal feed and vermicompost as described in this paper. This paper also explains about bioconversion process towards the production of various value-added products such as phenolic anti-oxidants, bromelain enzyme, phenolic flavour compounds, organic acids, and animal feed towards bioeconomy.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the most comprehended process to stabilise the waste biomass efficiently and to obtain bioenergy. The AD starts with the hydrolysis process, where the major liability is the action of inhibitors during the hydrolysis process. The biomass pretreatment preceding anaerobic digestion is obligatory to improve feedstock biodegradability for enhanced biogas generation. It can be prevailed by the application of various pretreatment processes. This review explains the major inhibiting compounds and their formation during hydrolysis that affect the efficiency of anaerobic digestion and the benefits of the physico-chemical pretreatment (PCP) method for enhancing hydrolysis in the digestion of waste biomass. The synergistic effect of PCP on macromolecular release, liquefaction and biodegradability were presented. The feasibility of the pretreatment process was evaluated in terms of energy and cost assessment for pilot scale implementation. The outcome of this review reveals that the physico-chemical process is one of the best pretreatment methods to enhance anaerobic digestion by optimising various parameters and increasing the solubilization by about 90%. The thermochemical pretreatment at lower temperature (<100) increases the net energy yield. The solubilization of waste biomass in terms of macromolecular release and liquefaction cannot describe the pretreatment potential. The effectiveness of pretreatment was evaluated by the substrate pre-treatment followed by anaerobic digestibility of pretreated substrate.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) process is widely considered the most sustainable technology for food waste (FW) disposal due to its advantage of biomethane recovery and beneficial environmental consequences. However, the effects of key components in FW (i.e. starchy food, vegetables, fruits, and meats) on AD process and their methanogenic pathways remain unclear. In this study, the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of cooked rice, cabbage, banana peel, pork and local FW was 288, 283, 254, 630, and 476 NmL CH4/g VSadded, with t80 (time required for 80% methane produced) of 3, 9, 3, 11 and 11 days, respectively. Kinetic analysis suggested diverse hydrolysis rates (0.104-0.679 d-1) and specific methane yields (39-119 NmL CH4/g VSadded/d). The relative abundances of key methanogens in the reactors were diverse, leading to the variation in acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathways. This study provides fundamental information for the operation of AD systems with different FW compositions.

Abstract
The components of waste cooking oil (WCO) are complex and contain toxic substances, which are difficult to treat biologically. Pseudomonas aeruginosa WO2 was isolated from oily sludge by an anaerobic enrichment–aerobic screening method, which could efficiently utilize WCO and produce rhamnolipid. The effects of nutrients and culture conditions on bacterial growth and lipase activity were investigated to optimize the fermentation of WCO. The results showed that strain WO2 utilized 92.25% of WCO and produced 3.03 g/L of rhamnolipid at 120 h. Compared with inorganic sources, the organic nitrogen source stabilized the pH of fermentation medium, improved lipase activity (up to 19.98 U/mL), and promoted the utilization of WCO. Furthermore, the WO2 strain exhibited inferior utilization ability of the soluble starch contained in food waste, but superior salt stress up to 60 g/L. These unique characteristics demonstrate the potential of Pseudomonas aeruginosa WO2 for the utilization of high-salinity oily organic waste or wastewater.

Abstract
In order to solve problems of low methane production from lipids in anaerobic digestion, microbial electrochemical degradation was proposed to promote methane yield of glycerol trioleate (a typical lipid component of food waste). The beta-oxidation of lipids was strengthened with an applied voltage to promote electron transfer and anaerobic digestion. SEM images showed that a lot of spherical and rod-shaped microbes adhered to electrode surfaces. Cyclic voltammetry showed that electron transfer rate constant at 0.8 V was 14.4-fold that at 0 V. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy showed that small organic degraded molecules were used more efficiently in anaerobic digestion. The methane yield of glycerol trioleate increased to 791.6 mL/g-TVS (at 0.8 V), while methane production peak rate increased to 26.8 mL/g-TVS/d with a shortened peak time to 24th day. The overall energy conversion efficiency in methane production increased from 53.6 to 60.1% due to microbial electrochemical degradation of lipids.

Abstract
A significant amount of food waste (FW) is produced every year. If it is not disposed of timeously, human health and the ecological environment can be negatively affected. Lactic acid (LA), a high value-added product, can be produced by fermentation from FW as a substrate, realizing the concurrent treatment and recycling of FW, which has attracted increasing research interest. In this paper, the latest advances and deficiencies were presented from the following aspects: microorganisms involved in LA fermentation and the metabolic pathways of Lactobacillus, fermentation conditions, and methods of enhanced biotransformation and LA separation. The limitations of the LA fermentation of FW are mainly associated with low LA concentration and yield, the low purity of L(+)-LA, and the high separation costs. The establishment of biorefineries of FW with lactic acid as the target product is the future development direction, but there are still many research studies to be done.

Abstract
Bacterial community structure and dynamics in anaerobic digesters are primarily influenced by feedstock composition. It is therefore important to unveil microbial traits that explain microbiome variations in response to substrate changes. Here, gene and genome-centric metagenomics were used to examine microbiome dynamics in four laboratory-scale reactors, in which sewage sludge was co-digested with increasing amounts of food waste. A co-occurrence network revealed microbiome shifts in response to changes in substrate composition and concentration. Food waste concentration correlated with extracellular enzymes and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) involved in the degradation of complex carbohydrates commonly found in fruits and plant cell walls as well as with the abundance of hydrolytic MAGs. A key role was attributed to Proteiniphillum for being the only bacteria that encoded the complete pectin degradation pathway. These results suggest that changes of feedstock composition establish new microbial niches for bacteria with the capacity to degrade newly added substrates.

Microalgae have emerged as an effective dual strategy for bio-valorisation of food processing wastewater and food waste hydrolysate which favours microalgae cultivation into producing value-added by products mainly lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins to the advantages of bioplastic production. Moreover, various microalgae have successfully removed high amount of organic pollutants from food processing wastewater prior discharging into the environment. Innovation of microalgae cultivating in food processing wastewater greatly reduced the cost of wastewater treatment compared to conventional approach in terms of lower carbon emissions, energy consumption, and chemical usage while producing microalgae biomass which can benefit low-cost fertilizer and bioplastic applications. The study on several microalgae species has all successfully grown on food waste hydrolysates showing high exponential growth rate and biomass production rich in proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. Multiple techniques have been implemented for the extraction of food wastes to be incorporate into the bioplastic production.

Abstract
Rapid population growth, combined with increased industrialization, has exacerbated the issue of solid waste management. Poor management of municipal solid waste (MSW) not only has detrimental environmental consequences but also puts public health at risk and introduces several other socioeconomic problems. Many developing countries are grappling with the problem of safe disposing of large amounts of produced municipal solid waste. Unmanaged municipal solid waste pollutes the environment, so its use as a potential renewable energy source would aid in meeting both increased energy needs and waste management. This review investigates emerging strategies and monitoring tools for municipal solid waste management. Waste monitoring using high-end technologies and energy recovery from MSW has been discussed. It comprehensively covers environmental and economic relevance of waste management technologies based on innovations achieved through the integration of approaches.

Abstract
The modern linear agricultural production system allows the production of large quantities of food for an ever-growing population. However, it leads to large quantities of agricultural waste either being disposed of or treated for the purpose of reintroduction into the production chain with a new use. Various approaches in food waste management were explored to achieve social benefits and applications. The extraction of natural bioactive molecules (such as fibers and antioxidants) through innovative technologies represents a means of obtaining value-added products and an excellent measure to reduce the environmental impact. Cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries can use natural bioactive molecules as supplements and the food industry as feed and food additives. The bioactivities of phytochemicals contained in biowaste, their potential economic impact, and analytical procedures that allow their recovery are summarized in this study. Our results showed that although the recovery of bioactive molecules represents a sustainable means of achieving both waste reduction and resource utilization, further research is needed to optimize the valuable process for industrial-scale recovery.

Abstract
The utilization of renewable lignocellulosic biomasses for bioenergy synthesis is believed to facilitate competitive commercialization and realize affordable clean energy sources in the future. Among the pathways for biomass pretreatment methods that enhance the efficiency of the whole biofuel production process, the combined microwave irradiation and physicochemical approach is found to provide many economic and environmental benefits. Several studies on microwave-based pretreatment technologies for biomass conversion have been conducted in recent years. Although some reviews are available, most did not comprehensively analyze microwave-physicochemical pretreatment techniques for biomass conversion. The study of these techniques is crucial for sustainable biofuel generation. Therefore, the biomass pretreatment process that combines the physicochemical method with microwave-assisted irradiation is reviewed in this paper. The effects of this pretreatment process on lignocellulosic structure and the ratio of achieved components were also discussed in detail. Pretreatment processes for biomass conversion were substantially affected by temperature, irradiation time, initial feedstock components, catalyst loading, and microwave power. Consequently, neoteric technologies utilizing high efficiency-based green and sustainable solutions should receive further focus. In addition, methodologies for quantifying and evaluating effects and relevant trade-offs should be develop to facilitate the take-off of the biofuel industry with clean and sustainable goals.

Abstract
The effect of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) of tofu residue (TR) and co-digestion of TR with hydrochar (HC) and a liquid fraction (LF) of hydrothermal pretreatment on biogas production was studied. The highest biogas and methane yield observed with the pretreated TR at HTP temperature of 140 °C reached 288 and 207 L/Kg VS, 24 and 37% above than the raw TR (control), respectively, and the highest content of methane 72%. Adding 4 g/L of HC (produced at 200 °C) enhanced the methane and biogas yield by 18 and 19% compared to untreated TR, respectively. It was found that HTP at temperature 140 °C and additive HC-200 (4 g/L) was the most efficient for biogas production from tofu residue and significantly reduced the digestion time needed from 20 to 10-13 days to reach 95% of biogas yield, which may result in substantial economic benefits.

Abstract
With the implementation of zero-waste city and waste classification in China, a large amount of food waste (FW) began to appear in concentration, and there was an urgent requirement for appropriate and efficient treatment technology. Traditional FW disposal methods (landfill and incineration) could cause several environmental problems, so resource recycling has become the main development trend of FW in China. In recent years, anaerobic digestion (AD) technology for FW resource treatment has attracted much attention due to its advantages such as the ability to obtain clean energy, low carbon emissions, and suitability for large-scale treatment compared with other recycling technologies (composting, feed, and breeding insects). Chinese policy is conducive to the development of AD for FW, which has the potential to produce methane and achieve economic and environmental benefits. This paper presents an overview of the researches, application situations, and perspectives for the AD of FW resource treatment in China. The bibliometric analysis shows that China has the most interest in the AD of FW compared to other countries, and the amount and characteristics analysis of FW indicates that FW is suitable for treatment by AD. At the same time, this review analyzes the influence factors, methods to promote AD, working mechanism, secondary pollution of AD. Besides, the article introduces and analyzes the current policies, application status, economic and environmental benefits, and problems of AD for FW resource treatment in China. AD is considered as an alternative resource treatment technology for FW, although there are still several problems such as odors, digestate, etc. In the future, China should focus on the reform of management policy, the implementation of the AD circular economy model, and the research of the biorefinery model based on AD technology.

Abstract
Microbial flocculants are macromolecular substances produced by microorganisms. Due to its non-toxic, harmless, and biodegradable advantages, microbial flocculants have been widely used in various industrial fields, such as wastewater treatment, microalgae harvest, activated sludge dewatering, heavy metal ion adsorption, and nanoparticle synthesis, especially in the post-treatment process of fermentation with high safety requirement. However, compared with the traditional inorganic flocculants and organic polymeric flocculants, the high production cost is the main bottleneck that restricts the large-scale production and application of microbial flocculants. To reduce the production cost of microbial flocculant, a series of efforts have been carried out and some exciting research progresses have been achieved. This paper summarized the research advances in the last decade, including the screening of high-yield strains and the construction of genetically engineered strains, search of cheap alternative medium, the extraction and preservation methods, microbial flocculants production as an incidental product of other biological processes, combined use of traditional flocculant and microbial flocculant, and the production of microbial flocculant promoted by inducer. Moreover, this paper prospects the future research directions to further reduce the production cost of microbial flocculants, thereby promoting the industrial production and large-scale application of microbial flocculants.

Abstract
Annually, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food is lost worldwide, accounting for one-third of annual food production. Therefore, turning food waste into energy is of enormous environmental significance because of its sustainable nature. Nutrients and organic acids present in food waste can be used to produce (bio)products such as biohydrogen through biological processes. However, our understanding of the production of biohydrogen from food waste through photofermentation and dark fermentation is still restricted. This comprehensive study aims to review the potential of food waste for biohydrogen production using microbial mediators, including a brief overview of process parameters that affect the (bio)hydrogen production pathway.

Abstract
This review explores the sustainable feasibility of kitchen wastes to implement as an effective substrate for biohydrogen production through dark fermentation. Being organic in nature, kitchen wastes are enomerous source of nutrients and carbohydrate, which are produced in huge quantity in our daily life, and therefore can be potentially used for biohydrogen production through microbial technique. The review discussed in detail about the impact of kitchen waste, its availability and sustainability on the biohydrogen production process along with future scope at industrial scale for the production of sustainable and renewable energy. In addition, recent advances, and their possibility to enhance the fermentative biohydrogen production using kitchen waste have been covered. Emphasis is also made on the application of nanomaterials to increase the yield of biohydrogen production and to make the entire process more economical and sustainable while using kitchen wastes as substrate for the microbial fermentation. Finally, advantages, limitations and future prospects of the process of biohydrogen production using kitchen wastes as potential substrate have been discussed.

Abstract
The increasing world population generates huge amounts of wastewater as well as large energy demand. Additionally, fossil fuel’s combustion for energy production causes the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and other pollutants. Therefore, there is a strong need to find alternative green approaches for wastewater treatment and energy production. Microalgae biorefineries could represent an effective strategy to mitigate the above problems. Microalgae biorefineries are a sustainable alternative to conventional wastewater treatment processes, as they potentially allow wastewater to be treated at lower costs and with lower energy consumption. Furthermore, they provide an effective means to recover valuable compounds for biofuel production or other applications. This review focuses on the current scenario and future prospects of microalgae biorefineries aimed at combining wastewater treatment with biofuel production. First, the different microalgal cultivation systems are examined, and their main characteristics and limitations are discussed. Then, the technologies available for converting the biomass produced during wastewater treatment into biofuel are critically analyzed. Finally, current challenges and research directions for biofuel production and wastewater treatment through this approach are outlined.

Improved Sugar Recovery from Orange Peel by Statistical Optimization of Thermo-Alkaline Pretreatment. Processes (Basel) 2021. Abstract
Orange peel, which is a by-product of oranges, contains carbohydrates that can be converted into sugars and used in the fermentation process. In this study, the thermal alkaline pretreatment process was chosen because of its simplicity and lesser reaction time. In addition, the reaction factors were optimized using response surface methodology. The determined optimal conditions were as follows: 60.1 g/L orange peels loading, 3% KOH and 30 min. Under the optimal conditions, glucan content (GC) and enzymatic digestibility (ED) were found to be 32.8% and 87.8%, respectively. Enzymatic hydrolysis was performed with pretreated and non-pretreated orange peels using three types of enzyme complex (cellulase, cellobiase and xylanase). The minimum concentrations of enzyme complex required to obtain maximum ED were 30 FPU (filter paper unit), 15 CBU (cellobiase unit), and 30 XNU (xylanase unit) based on 1 g-biomass. Additionally, ED of the treated group was approximately 3.7-fold higher than that of the control group. In conclusion, the use of orange peel as a feedstock for biorefinery can be a strategic solution to reduce wastage of resources and produce sustainable bioproducts.
