Abstract
Phycocyanin is a highly valued pigment present in Spirulina platensis biomass with applications in the food industry in terms of biorefinery concepts; specifically, its antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity are an advantage that could be incorporated into a food matrix. This study aims to use rice husk as an alternative culture medium for S. platensis biomass growth and phycocyanin extraction by ohmic heating processing using a 3D-printed reactor. S. platensis was cultivated in rice husk extract (RHE) from 0-100% (v/v). The highest content of microalgal biomass was 1.75 ± 0.01 g/L, with a specific growth rate of 0.125 ± 0.01 h-1. For the phycocyanin extraction under an ohmic heating process, a 3D-printed reactor was designed and built. To optimize phycocyanin extraction, a central composite rotatable design (CCDR) was evaluated, with three factors: time (min), temperature (°C), and pH. The highest phycocyanin content was 75.80 ± 0.98 mg/g in S. platensis biomass grown with rice husk extract. Ohmic heating is a promising method for rapid phycocyanin extraction, and rice husk as a culture medium is an alternative for the growth of S. platensis biomass in the integration of second- and third-generation biorefineries.

Abstract
CO2 absorption-microalgae conversion (CAMC) system is a promising carbon capture and utilization technology. However, the use of HCO3- as a carbon source often led to a slower growth rate of microalgae, which also limited the application of CAMC system. In this study, the assimilation efficiency of HCO3- in CAMC system was improved through mixotrophic, and the potential mechanism was investigated. The HCO3- assimilation efficiency and biomass under mixotrophic were 34.79% and 31.76% higher than that of control. Mixotrophic increased chlorophyll and phycocyanin content, which were beneficial to capture more light energy. The content of ATP and NADPH reached 566.86 μmol/gprot and 672.86 nmol/mgprot, which increased by 31.83% and 27.67% compared to autotrophic. The activity of carbonic anhydrase and Rubisco increased by 18.52% and 22.08%, respectively. Transcriptome showed that genes related to photosynthetic and respiratory electron transport were up-regulated. The synergy of photophosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation greatly improved energy metabolism efficiency, thus accelerating the assimilation of HCO3-. These results revealed a potential mechanism of promoting the HCO3- assimilation under mixotrophic, it also provided a guidance for using CAMC system to serve carbon neutrality.

Abstract
Microalgae are considered a promising source for obtaining natural compounds with strong antioxidant activity. Despite the great progress made in this field, there is still need for further studies applying simple and cost-effective modifications to reveal their full potential and enhance antioxidant properties. Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris are some of the most common cells studied for this purpose. In this study, it was aimed to develop a bioprocess for the enhancement of antioxidant properties of these two microalgae by evaluating the effect of different culture conditions. With this aim, the impacts of light intensity/reactive oxygen species and nitrogen sources/reactive oxygen species were evaluated for the A. platensis and C. vulgaris cells, respectively. Results showed that the antioxidant potential of A. platensis was found to be correlated with the phycocyanin and total phenolic content of cells, and 80 µmol photons m-2 s-1 light intensity induced antioxidant activity in a two-step cultivation mode. For C. vulgaris cells, maximum antioxidant activities of 68.10 ± 1.51% and 75.68 ± 0.66% were obtained in cultures with NH4Cl (0.016% (w/v)) for DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. The applied oxidative stress factors exhibited different effects on the antioxidant activities of the cells because of their cellular morphologies and changing mechanisms of reactive oxygen species. These outcomes show the potential of applied modifications on cells and suggest a promising route to enhance antioxidant activities of microalgae for further research.

Abstract
There are few studies on the effects of nanoplastics on growth and hemolysin production of harmful algal bloom species at present. In this study, Karlodinium veneficum was exposed to different concentrations (0, 5, 25, 50, 75 mg/L) of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, 100 nm) for 96 h. The effects of PS-NPs on growth of K. veneficum were investigated by measuring algal cell abundance, growth inhibition rate (IR), total protein (TP), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione reductase (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ATPase activity (Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+ ATPase). Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope (SEM and TEM) images of microalgae with or without nanoplastics were also observed. The effects of PS-NPs on hemolysin production of K. veneficum were studied by measuring the changes of hemolytic toxin production of K. veneficum exposed to PS-NPs on 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. High concentrations (50 and 75 mg/L) of PS-NPs seriously affected the growth of K. veneficum and different degrees of damage to cell morphology and ultrastructure were found. Excessive free radicals and other oxidants were produced in the cells, which disrupted the intracellular redox balance state and caused oxidative damage to the cells, and the basic activities such as photosynthesis and energy metabolism were weakened. The athletic ability of K. veneficum was decreased, but the ability to produce hemolysin was enhanced. It was suggested that the presence of nanoplastics in seawater may strengthen the threat of harmful algal bloom species to aquatic ecosystems and human health.

Abstract
As a novel protein resource, the low digestibility of Spirulina platensis protein (SPP) limits its large-scale application. From the perspective of food processing methods, different heating treatments were explored to improve the structure and digestibility of SPP. In this study, SPP was heated by water bath and microwave at the same heating rate and heating temperature. Microwave accelerated protein denaturation and structure unfolded as the heating intensity increases, causing more exposed hydrophobic residues and enhancing surface hydrophobicity. The data of free sulfhydryl group, particle size, and gel electrophoresis, showed that microwave treatment promoted the formation of protein aggregates. The structural changes can potentially improve the accessibility of digestive enzymes, promote the in vitro digestibility rate, and further accelerate the production of small molecular peptides and the release of free amino acids. This study provided an innovative approach to improve the digestibility and therefore the utilization efficiency of SPP.

Abstract
The efficient cultivation of microalgae using CO2 from flue gas can be a win-win situation for both environmental protection and energy accessibility. In general, 10-20% of CO2 in flue gas would decrease pH and inhibit microalgae growth. However, Chlorella sorokiniana MB-1 under 15% CO2 showed a periodical auto-agglomeration, which promoted microalgae growth on the contrary in this study. The maximum biomass concentration of 3.27 g L-1 was higher than that cultivated with an optimal CO2 concentration. The pH decreased to 6.04 after the mixed gas with 15% CO2 (v/v) was bubbled into medium for 0.5 hours, which resulted in auto-agglomeration to protect microalgae from acidification and keep a high specific growth rate of 0.03 h-1. Then the pH recovered to 7 during stabilization phase, auto-agglomeration ratio was up to 100% because of lamellar extracellular polymeric substances. Therefore, the interesting periodical agglomeration both enhanced growth and simplified harvesting.

Abstract
Mixotrophic cultivation was proposed to enhance the biomass and carbon sequestration efficiency of Spirulina in CO2 absorption and microalgae conversion (CAMC) system, and the underlying metabolic mechanism was also explored. The result showed that mixotrophic enhanced the performance of CAMC system, the maximum biomass, total carbon conversion capacity and efficiency was obtained at 0.5 g/L acetate group, which was 60.47 %, 63.06 % and 59.77 % higher than control. Adding 0.5 g/L acetate enhanced the activities of Rubisco and Acetyl-CoA, arrived at 89.59 U/g and 5.16 nmol/g, respectively. Metabolomics analyses suggested that mixotrophic changed metabolic flux and affected intracellular composition. Mixotrophic up-regulated Calvin cycle, glycolysis, and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, induced more carbon fluxes into central carbon metabolism for the growth of Spirulina. These results suggested that mixotrophic could supply effective energy and carbon skeleton for rapid growth of Spirulina, and provided a theoretical basis for large-scale application of CAMC system.

Abstract
As a counter to climate change, energy crises, and global warming, microalgal biomass has gained a lot of interest as a sustainable and environmentally favorable biofuel feedstock. Microalgal carbohydrate is considered one of the promising feedstocks for biofuel produced via the bioconversion route under a biorefinery system. However, the present culture technique, which uses a commercial medium, has poor biomass and carbohydrate productivity, creating a bottleneck for long-term microalgal-carbohydrate-based biofuel generation. This current investigation aims toward the simultaneous increase in biomass and carbohydrate accumulation of Spirulina platensis by formulating an optimal growth condition under different concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous in flasks and a bubble photobioreactor. For this purpose, the lack of nitrogen (NaNO3) and phosphorous (K2HPO4) in the culture medium resulted in an enhanced Spirulina platensis biomass and total carbohydrate 0.93 ± 0.00 g/L and 74.44% (w/w), respectively. This research is a significant step in defining culture conditions that might be used to tune the carbohydrate content of Spirulina.

Abstract
Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Arthrospira platensis (A. platensis) has been widely applied in industry and commerce for its various activities but the accumulation of EPS in culture medium may influence the growth of A. platensis reversely. This work aims to explore the impacts of initial pH, nitrogen source and concentration, phosphate concentration and recycle times of the culture medium on the growth of A. platensis and the secretion of its EPS. The results showed that EPS accumulated with the increase in recycle times of culture medium. The optimal initial pH for the growth of A. platensis was 8.50, and high pH of 11.5 inhibited the growth of biomass while resulting in highest EPS content of 92.87 mg/g DW. Excessive and limited nitrogen (NaNO3 of 25.00 g/L and NaNO3 < 2.50 g/L) and phosphate (K2HPO4 of 5.00 g/L and K2HPO4 < 0.50 g/L) inhibited the biomass production of A. platensis by 1.28−30.77% and 14.29−45.05%, respectively. EPS yield of 97.57 mg/g DW and 40.90 mg/g DW were obtained under NaNO3 of 25.00 g/L and K2HPO4 of 5.00 g/L due to salt stress. These findings are beneficial in providing a theoretical basis for high yield EPS from A. platensis without affecting biomass yield.
