Biomaterials and tissue engineering in traumatic brain injury: novel perspectives on promoting neural regeneration

Traumatic brain injury is a serious medical condition that can be attributed to falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries and acts of violence, causing a series of neural injuries and neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, limited accessibility to the injury sites, complicated histological and anatomical structure, intricate cellular and extracellular milieu, lack of regenerative capacity in the native cells, vast variety of damage routes, and the insufficient time available for treatment have restricted the widespread application of several therapeutic methods in cases of central nervous system injury. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have emerged as innovative approaches in the field of nerve regeneration. By combining biomaterials, stem cells, and growth factors, these approaches have provided a platform for developing effective treatments for neural injuries, which can offer the potential to restore neural function, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the need for drugs and invasive surgical procedures. Biomaterials have shown advantages in promoting neural development, inhibiting glial scar formation, and providing a suitable biomimetic neural microenvironment, which makes their application promising in the field of neural regeneration. For instance, bioactive scaffolds loaded with stem cells can provide a biocompatible and biodegradable milieu. Furthermore, stem cells-derived exosomes combine the advantages of stem cells, avoid the risk of immune rejection, cooperate with biomaterials to enhance their biological functions, and exert stable functions, thereby inducing angiogenesis and neural regeneration in patients with traumatic brain injury and promoting the recovery of brain function. Unfortunately, biomaterials have shown positive effects in the laboratory, but when similar materials are used in clinical studies of human central nervous system regeneration, their efficacy is unsatisfactory. Here, we review the characteristics and properties of various bioactive materials, followed by the introduction of applications based on biochemistry and cell molecules, and discuss the emerging role of biomaterials in promoting neural regeneration. Further, we summarize the adaptive biomaterials infused with exosomes produced from stem cells and stem cells themselves for the treatment of traumatic brain injury. Finally, we present the main limitations of biomaterials for the treatment of traumatic brain injury and offer insights into their future potential.

Response of current distribution in a liter-scale microbial fuel cell to variable operating conditions

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging technology in renewable energy and waste treatment and the scale-up is crucial for practical applications. Undoubtedly, the analysis and comprehension of MFC operation necessitate essential information regarding the response of the current distribution to variable operating conditions, which stands as one of its significant dynamic characteristics. In this study, the dynamic responses of current distribution to external stimuli (external load, temperature, pH, and electrolyte concentration) were investigated by employing a segmented anode current collector in a liter-scale MFC. The results demonstrated that, with respect to the anodic segment close to the cathode, a major response of the segment current to changes in load, temperature and pH was observed while minor response to changes in ion concentration. It was also found that external stimuli-induced high current usually led to a worse current distribution while increasing electrolyte ion concentration could simultaneously improve the maximal power generation and current distribution. In addition, the response time of segment current to input stimulus followed the pattern of temperature ˃ pH ˃ ion concentration ˃ external load. The results and implication of this study would be helpful in enhancing the operational stability of scale-up MFCs in future practical application.

Self-Enhancement of Perfluorinated Sulfonic Acid Proton Exchange Membrane with Its Own Nanofibers

High-performance proton exchange membrane (PEM) is crucial for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Herein, a novel "self-enhanced" PEM is fabricated for the first time, which is composed of perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) resin and its own nanofibers as reinforcement. With this strategy, the interfacial compatibility issue of conventional fiber-reinforced membranes is fully addressed and up to 80 wt% loading of PFSA nanofibers can be incorporated. Furthermore, on account of chain orientation within the PFSA nanofiber, single fiber exhibits super-high conductivity of 1.45 S cm-1, leading to state-of-the-art proton conductivity (1.1 S cm-1) of the as-prepared "self-enhanced" PEM so far, which is an order of magnitude increase compared with the bulk PFSA membrane (0.29 S cm-1). It surpasses any commercial PEM including the popular GORE-SELECT and Nafion HP membranes and is the only PEM with conductivity at 100 S cm-1 level. In addition, the mechanical strength and swelling ratio of membranes are both substantially improved simultaneously. Based on the high-performance "self-enhanced" PEM, high peak power densities of up to 3.6 W cm-2 and 1.7 W cm-2 are achieved in H2-O2 and H2-Air fuel cells, respectively. This strategy can be applied in any polymeric electrolyte membrane.

Hawthorn Fruit (Crataegus spp.) Polysaccharides Exhibit Immunomodulatory Activity on Macrophages via TLR4/NF-κB Signaling Activation

The immunostimulatory effects and the involved molecular mechanisms of polysaccharides from hawthorn fruit (Crataegus spp.) have not been well understood. In this study, the chemical composition, monosaccharide composition, uronic acid content, and structural features of hawthorn fruit polysaccharides (HFP) and the two collected fractions were analyzed. Both AF1-2 and AF2 have pectic-like structural features rich in galacturonic acid. AF2 showed superior proinflammatory effects on macrophages which significantly increased the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α, but not AF1-2. AF2 was found to activate the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway with suppressed expression of IκBα but up-regulated expression of p-IκBα and nuclear factor-κB P65. The surface binding site of AF2 on macrophage cells was characterized and toll like receptor-4 was responsible for AF2 induced activation of down-stream nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways. AF2 from hawthorn fruit could be potentially used as a natural source of immunomodulator in functional foods.

Evolutionary patterns and influencing factors of relationships among ecosystem services in the hilly red soil region of Southern China

As a crucial ecological protection area in China, the Southern hilly red soil region is characterized by uneven spatial and temporal distribution of ecological landscape elements, unpredictable and changeable interrelationships between them, diversified driving factors, and lack of comprehensive consideration of ecosystem services. In order to better understand the interaction between ecosystem services, restore regional ecology, and promote sustainable development, the evolution law and influencing mechanism of ecosystem services and their driving factors are quantitatively analyzed in the study. Based on simulations of different ecosystem services from 2000 to 2020, their spatial and temporal changes and the contributions of main drivers are quantified, their trade-offs and synergies are analyzed, and the changing rules under the influence of natural factors and socioeconomic factors are explored. The results show that (1) the crop production significantly increases in the southwest and north regions, the habitat quality decreases in urban and coastal areas, and the soil retention and water yield show an increasing trend from west to east. (2) Land use/cover is the main driver of carbon storage and habitat quality variation, and precipitation is an important driver of water yield spatial variation. (3) The crop production and the other four ecosystem services show a trade-offs relationship, and the relationship between supporting services and regulating services is the synergetic. (4) The altitude weakens the synergistic relationship between soil retention and habitat quality/carbon storage, while it enhances the synergistic relationship between soil retention and water yield. Driven by precipitation factors, ecosystem services related to water yield have significant differences in the change. The population density enhances the trade-offs of crop production and soil retention, as well as the synergistic relationship between soil retention and habitat quality/carbon storage. In different land use/cover (LULC), the influence of urban land on ecosystem services relationship change is more obvious. Overall, this study can provide scientific bases and policy suggestions for ecosystem protection/restoration in the red soil region of Southern China, which has an important theoretical and practical significance.

In Situ Biosynthesis of FeS Nanoparticles Boosts Current Generation in Bioelectrochemical Systems Through Efficient Electron Transfer

The utility of electrochemical active biofilm in bioelectrochemical systems has received considerable attention for harvesting energy and chemical products. However, the slow electron transfer between biofilms and electrodes hinders the enhancement of performance and still remains challenging. Here, using Fe3 O4 /L-Cys nanoparticles as precursors to induce biomineralization, a facile strategy for the construction of an effective electron transfer pathway through biofilm and biological/inorganic interface is proposed, and the underlying mechanisms are elucidated. Taking advantage of an on-chip interdigitated microelectrode array (IDA), the conductive current of biofilm that is related to the electron transfer process within biofilm is characterized, and a 2.10-fold increase in current output is detected. The modification of Fe3 O4 /L-Cys on the electrode surface facilitates the electron transfer between the biofilm and the electrode, as the bio/inorganic interface electron transfer resistance is only 16% compared to the control. The in-situ biosynthetic Fe-containing nanoparticles (e.g., FeS) enhance the transmembrane EET and the EET within biofilm, and the peak conductivity increases 3.4-fold compared to the control. The in-situ biosynthesis method upregulates the genes involved in energy metabolism and electron transfer from the transcriptome analysis. This study enriches the insights of biosynthetic nanoparticles on electron transfer process, holding promise in bioenergy conversion.

Interaction pathways of implant metal localized corrosion and macrophage inflammatory reactions

Macrophages play a central role in immunological responses to metallic species associated with the localized corrosion of metallic implants, and mediating in peri-implant inflammations. Herein, the pathways of localized corrosion-macrophage interactions were systematically investigated on 316L stainless steel (SS) implant metals. Electrochemical monitoring under macrophage-mediated inflammatory conditions showed a decreased pitting corrosion resistance of 316L SSs in the presence of RAW264.7 cells as the cells would disrupt biomolecule adsorbed layer on the metal surface. The pitting potentials were furtherly decreased when the RAW264.7 cells were induced to the M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype by the addition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and pitting corrosion preferentially initiated at the peripheries of macrophages. The overproduction of aggressive ROS under inflammatory conditions would accelerate the localized corrosion of 316L SS around macrophages. Under pitting corrosion condition, the viability and pro-inflammatory polarization of RAW264.7 cells were region-dependent, lower viability and more remarkable morphology transformation of macrophages in the pitting corrosion region than the pitting-free region. The pitting corrosion of 316L SS induced high expression of CD86, TNF-α, IL-6 and high level of intracellular ROS in macrophages. Uneven release of metallic species (Fe2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, etc) and uneven distribution of surface overpotential stimulated macrophage inflammatory responses near the corrosion pits. A synergetic effect of localized corrosion and macrophages was revealed, which could furtherly promote localized corrosion of 316L SS and macrophage inflammatory reactions. Our results provided direct evidence of corrosion-macrophage interaction in metallic implants and disclosed the pathways of this mutual stimulation effect.

A Dual-Functional MXene-Based Bioanode for Wearable Self-Charging Biosupercapacitors

As a reliable energy-supply platform for wearable electronics, biosupercapacitors combine the characteristics of biofuel cells and supercapacitors to harvest and store the energy from human's sweat. However, the bulky preparation process and deep embedding of enzyme active sites in bioelectrodes usually limit the energy-harvesting process, retarding the practical power-supply sceneries especially during the complicated in vivo motion. Herein, a MXene/single-walled carbon nanotube/lactate oxidase hierarchical structure as the dual-functional bioanode is designed, which can not only provide a superior 3D catalytic microenvironment for enzyme accommodation to harvest energy from sweat, but also offers sufficient capacitance to store energy via the electrical double-layer capacitor. A wearable biosupercapacitor is fabricated in the "island-bridge" structure with a composite bioanode, active carbon/Pt cathode, polyacrylamide hydrogel substrate, and liquid metal conductor. The device exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.48 V and the high power density of 220.9 µW cm-2 at 0.5 mA cm-2 . The compact conformal adhesion with skin is successfully maintained under stretching/bending conditions. After repeatedly stretching the devices, there is no significant power attenuation in pulsed output. The unique bioelectrode structure and attractive energy harvesting/storing properties demonstrate the promising potential of this biosupercapacitor as a micro self-powered platform of wearable electronics.

Microenvironment Regulation Strategies Facilitating High-Efficiency CO2 Electrolysis in a Zero-Gap Bipolar Membrane Electrolyzer

In alkaline and neutral zero-gap CO2 electrolyzers, the carbon utilization efficiency of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO is less than 50% because of inherently homogeneous reactions. Utilization of the bipolar membrane (BPM) electrolyzer can effectively suppress (bi)carbonate formation and parasitic CO2 losses; however, an excessive concentration of H+ in the catalyst layer (CL) significantly hinders the activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction. Here, we report a microenvironment regulation strategy that controls the CL thickness and ionomer content to regulate local CO2 transport and the local pH within the CL. We report 80% faradaic efficiency of CO at a current density of 400 mA/cm2 without the use of a buffering layer, exceeding that of state-of-the-art catalysts with a buffering layer. A carbon utilization efficiency of 63.6% at 400 mA/cm2 is also obtained. This study demonstrates the significance of regulating the microenvironment of the CL in a BPM system.

Boosting Carbon Dioxide Reduction in a Photocatalytic Fuel Cell with a Bubbling Fluidized Cathode: Dual Function of Titanium Carbide

Photoelectrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a promising avenue to realize resourceful utilization of carbon dioxide and mitigate the energy shortage. Herein, a photocatalytic fuel cell with a bubbling fluidized cathode (PFC-BFC) is proposed to increase the performance of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Titanium carbide (Ti3C2) is first used as a fluidized cathode catalyst with the dual features of superior capacitance and high CO2RR catalytic activity. Compared with the conventional PFC system, the as-proposed PFC-BFC system exhibits a higher gas production performance. Particularly, the generation rate and Faraday efficiency for CH4 production reach to 37.2 μmol g-1 h-1 and 72%, which are 10.9 and 6.5 times higher than that of the conventional PFC system, respectively. The bubbling fluidized cathode allows a rapid electron transfer between catalysts and the current collector and an efficient diffusion of catalysts in the whole solution, thus remarkably increasing the effective reaction area of the CO2RR. In addition, the fluidized reaction mechanism of charging/discharging-coupled CO2RR is investigated. Significantly, a magnified PFC-BFC system is designed and exhibits a similar gas generation rate compared to that of the small-scale system, indicating a good potential of scaling up in the industry applications. These results demonstrated that the proposed PFC-BFC system can maximize the utilization of catalyst active sites and enhance the reaction kinetics, providing an alternative design for the application of CO2RR.

Droplet transportation on photosensitive lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces in response to the light induced Marangoni effect and asymmetrical wetting ridges

Flexible control of droplet transportation is crucial in various applications but is constrained by liquid-solid friction. The development of biomimetic lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces provides a new solution for flexible manipulation of droplet transportation. Herein, a light strategy is reported for flexibly controlling droplet transportation on photosensitive lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces. Owing to the localized heating effect of a focused laser beam via photothermal conversion, the resultant thermal Marangoni flow and horizontal component of the surface tension associated with the asymmetric wetting ridges are together responsible for actuating droplet transportation. It is found that the asymmetry of the wetting ridge is dominated by the thickness of the infused oil layer, which directly affects the droplet transportation. The feasibility of this light strategy is also demonstrated by uphill movement, droplet coalescence, and chemical reaction. This study provides a new design for potential applications in open droplet microfluidics, analytical chemistry, diagnosis, etc.

Ni Single Atoms Embedded in Graphene Nanoribbon Sieves for High-Performance CO2 Reduction to CO

Ni single-atom catalysts (SACs) are appealing for electrochemical reduction CO2 reduction (CO2 RR). However, regulating the balance between the activity and conductivity remains a challenge to Ni SACs due to the limitation of substrates structure. Herein, the intrinsic performance enhancement of Ni SACs anchored on quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) synthesized is demonstrated by longitudinal unzipping carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The abundant functional groups on GNRs can absorb Ni atoms to form rich Ni-N4 -C sites during the anchoring process, providing a high intrinsic activity. In addition, the GNRs, which maintain a quasi-one-dimensional structure and possess a high conductivity, interconnect with each other and form a conductive porous framework. The catalyst yields a 44 mA cm-2 CO partial current density and 96% faradaic efficiency of CO (FECO ) at -1.1 V vs RHE in an H-cell. By adopting a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) flow cell, a 95% FECO and 2.4 V cell voltage are achieved at 200 mA cm-2 current density. This work provides a rational way to synthesize Ni SACs with a high Ni atom loading, porous morphology, and high conductivity with potential industrial applications.

Non-immersed zigzag microalgae biofilm overcoming high turbidity and ammonia of wastewater for muti-pollutants bio-purification

Biological treatment that utilizes microalgae technology has demonstrated outstanding efficacy in the wastewater purification and nutrients recovery. However, the high turbidity of the digested piggery wastewater (DPW) leads to serious light attenuation and the culture mode of suspended microalgae results in a huge landing area. Thus, to overcome light attenuation in DPW, a non-immersed titled zigzag microalgae biofilm was constructed by attaching it onto a porous cotton cloth. As a result, the light could directly irradiate microalgae biofilm that attached on both sides of the cotton cloth, and the microalgal biofilm area was up to 6 m2 per bioreactor landing area. When the non-immersed zigzag microalgae biofilm bioreactor (N-Z-MBP) was used to treat wastewater with an ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration of 362 mg L-1, the NH4+-N was completely removed in just 5 days and the maximum growth rate of microalgae biofilm reached 7.02 g m-2 d-1. After 21 days of long-term sequencing batch operation for the N-Z-MBP, the biomass density of the biofilm reached 52 g m-2 and remained at this high value for the next 14 days. Most importantly, during the 35 days' running, the NH4+ -N maximum removal rate of single batch reached up to 65 mg L-1 d-1 and its concentration in the effluent was always below the discharge standard value (80 mg L-1 form GB18596-2001 of China) and total phosphorus was completely removed in each batch. Furthermore, the biomass concentration of microalgae cells in the effluent of the N-Z-MBP was almost zero, indicating that the non-submerged biofilm achieved in situ separation of microalgae from the wastewater. This work suggests that the N-Z-MBP can effectively purify DPW over a long period, providing a possible strategy to treat wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen and high turbidity.

Light-manipulated binary droplet transport on a high-energy surface

Flexible and precise manipulation of droplet transport is of significance for scientific and engineering applications, but real-time and on-demand droplet manipulation remains a challenge. Herein, we report a strategy using light for the outstanding manipulation of binary droplet motion on a high-energy surface and reveal the underlying mechanism. Upon irradiation to a substrate by a focused light beam, the substrate can provide a localized heating source via photothermal conversion, and a binary droplet can be flexibly transported on a high-energy surface with free contact-line pinning, exhibiting light-propelled droplet transport. We theoretically showed that the surface tension gradient across the droplet interface resulting from the localized photothermal effect is responsible for actuating droplet transport. Remarkably, the high reconfigurability and flexibility of light allowed for binary droplet transport with dynamically tunable velocity and direction as well as arbitrary trajectory assisted by 2D channels on a high-energy surface. Complex droplet transportation, controllable droplet coalescence, and anti-gravity motion were realized. The promising applicability of this light-fueled droplet platform was also demonstrated by directional transport of biosample droplets containing DNA molecules and cells, as well as successional microreactions.

Multifunctional MOF-Derived Au, Co-Doped Porous Carbon Electrode for a Wearable Sweat Energy Harvesting-Storage Hybrid System

As an efficient alternative for harnessing the energy from human's biofluid, a wearable energy harvesting-storage hybrid supercapacitor-biofuel cell (SC-BFC) microfluidic system is established with one multifunctional electrode. The electrode integrates metal-organic framework (MOF) derived carbon nanoarrays with embedded Au, Co nanoparticles on a flexible substrate, and is used for the symmetric supercapacitor as well as the enzyme nanocarriers of the biofuel cell. The electrochemical performance of the proposed electrode is evaluated, and the corresponding working mechanism is studied in depth according to the cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory calculation. The multiplexed microfluidic system is designed to pump and store natural sweat to maintain the continuous biofuel supply in the hybrid SC-BFC system. The biofuel cell module harvests electricity from lactate in sweat, and the symmetric supercapacitor module accommodates the bioelectricity for subsequent utilization. A numerical model is developed to validate the normal operation in poor and rich sweat under variable situations for the microfluidic system. One single SC-BFC unit can be self-charged to ≈0.8 V with superior mechanical durability in on-body testing, as well as energy and power values of 7.2 mJ and 80.3 µW, respectively. It illustrates the promising scenery of energy harvesting-storage hybrid microfluidic system.

Light Fueled High-Throughput Binary Droplet Splitting and Transport on High-Energy Substrate

High-throughput droplet splitting and controllable transport of generated microdroplets on open surfaces are crucial in a broad spectrum of applications. Herein, a light strategy for controlling high-throughput splitting of binary droplets and transport of generated microdroplets on a high-energy substrate endowed by a localized photothermal effect is reported. Strong Marangoni flow as a result of the surface tension gradient and limited inward flow at the droplet bottom as a result of the significant viscous effect are together responsible for binary droplet splitting. The temperature gradients across the generated microdroplets established at the core heating zone are responsible for their transport away from the laser-acted zone. Remarkably, assisted by hydrophobic stripes on a high-energy substrate, high-throughput binary droplet splitting and controllable transport of generated microdroplets can be realized. Successful applications in biosample droplets and parallelized microreactions highlight the promising potential of this light strategy in open droplet microfluidics, biological assays and diagnosis, etc.

Immobilization of fatty acid photodecarboxylase in magnetic nickel ferrite nanoparticle

Fatty acid photodecarboxylase in Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvFAP) performed excellent ability to exclusively decarboxylate renewable fatty acids for C1-shortened hydrocarbons fuel production under visible light. However, the large-scale application by such an approach is limited by the free state of CvFAP catalyst, which is unstable for efficient biofuel production. In this study, CvFAP was immobilized in magnetic nickel ferrite (NiFe₂O₄) nanoparticles for facile recovery by a simple procedure. The shift of Ni 2p in electron binding energy was detected to clarify the interaction between Ni²⁺ and histidine of CvFAP. The coordination of NiFe₂O₄ and CvFAP contributed to an efficient affinity binding with an immobilization capacity of 98 mg/g carrier. Hydrocarbon fuel concentration of 3.7 mM was obtained by NiFe₂O₄@CvFAP-induced photoenzymatic decarboxylation. The high stability of CvFAP in terms of residual enzyme activity of 79.7% and 68% at pH 9 and organic solvent ratio of 60%, respectively, were observed.

Microstructure Design Strategy for Molecularly Dispersed Cobalt Phthalocyanine and Efficient Mass Transport in CO2 Electroreduction

Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) has attracted particular interest owing to its excellent activity during the electrochemical CO₂ conversion to CO. However, the efficient utilization of CoPc at industrially relevant current densities is still a challenge owing to its nonconductive property, agglomeration, and unfavorable conductive substrate design. Here, a microstructure design strategy for dispersing CoPc molecules on a carbon substrate for efficient CO₂ transport during CO₂ electrolysis is proposed and demonstrated. The highly dispersed CoPc is loaded on a macroporous hollow nanocarbon sheet to act as the catalyst (CoPc/CS). The unique interconnected and macroporous structure of the carbon sheet forms a large specific surface area to anchor CoPc with high dispersion and simultaneously boosts the mass transport of reactants in the catalyst layer, significantly improving the electrochemical performance. By employing a zero-gap flow cell, the designed catalyst can mediate CO₂ to CO with a high full-cell energy efficiency of 57% at 200 mA cm^-2 .

Revealing mechanism and influence of microalgae cells' periodical auto-agglomeration induced by high concentration of carbon dioxide

The efficient cultivation of microalgae using CO₂ from flue gas can be a win-win situation for both environmental protection and energy accessibility. In general, 10-20% of CO₂ in flue gas would decrease pH and inhibit microalgae growth. However, Chlorella sorokiniana MB-1 under 15% CO₂ showed a periodical auto-agglomeration, which promoted microalgae growth on the contrary in this study. The maximum biomass concentration of 3.27 g L^-1 was higher than that cultivated with an optimal CO₂ concentration. The pH decreased to 6.04 after the mixed gas with 15% CO₂ (v/v) was bubbled into medium for 0.5 hours, which resulted in auto-agglomeration to protect microalgae from acidification and keep a high specific growth rate of 0.03 h^-1. Then the pH recovered to 7 during stabilization phase, auto-agglomeration ratio was up to 100% because of lamellar extracellular polymeric substances. Therefore, the interesting periodical agglomeration both enhanced growth and simplified harvesting.

Green light enhanced the photostability and catalytic performance of fatty acid photodecarboxylase

Green light was documented to improve the photostability of fatty acid photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis (CvFAP). Compared to blue light, green light increased the pentadecane yield by 27.6% and improved the residual activity of CvFAP to 5.9-fold after the preillumination. Kinetics and thermodynamics indicated that blue light facilitated a high CvFAP activity.

In Situ Probing the Mass Transport Property Inside an Imitated Three-Dimensional Porous Bioelectrode

Three-dimensional porous materials have been demonstrated as the most successful bioelectrodes in bioelectrochemical systems due to their high specific surface area and abundant adhesion regions for electroactive bacteria. However, the pore clogging potentially limits the mass transfer process inside the electrode due to the unreasonable structure design and long-term operation. The investigation of mass transport behavior in the porous scaffolds is of great significance for designing the electrode structure and optimizing bioelectrochemical system performance. To in situ characterize the mass transport behavior in the orderly pore structure, model electrodes with 100 copper wires (10 × 10) are constructed to imitate a three-dimensional porous structure (pore size: ∼150 μm) commonly employed in bioelectrodes. The poor proton effective diffusion coefficient solidly demonstrates that the mass transport inside the three-dimensional porous electrode is critically inhibited, leading not only to a progressive change and sparse biomass in the biofilm development process but also to biofilm acidification due to serious proton accumulation. It finally results in sluggish bacterial metabolic activity and a decreased electrocatalytic capacity. The interior space of porous electrodes cannot be adequately utilized, resulting in the inability to fully exploit the advantages of their abundant surface area. Consequently, the construction of gradient porous electrodes with small inner and large outer pores to enhance mass transport is a feasible proposal for enhancing performance. The proposed methodology of establishing model electrodes combined with the in situ detection technique within porous electrodes is crucial for acquiring various types of physicochemical information inside the bioelectrode, such as biofilm growth situation, biochemical reaction conditions, as well as mass transfer characteristics. More importantly, the work provides a fundamental basis for designing highly efficient bioelectrodes.

Gas diffusion TiO2 photoanode for photocatalytic fuel cell towards simultaneous VOCs degradation and electricity generation

In this work, a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with a gas diffusion TiO₂ photoanode is proposed to directly convert chemical energy contained in volatile organic compounds into electricity by using solar energy. The gas diffusion TiO₂ photoanode is prepared by coating TiO₂ nanoparticles onto Ti mesh, whose intrinsic porous structure allows for gaseous pollutants to directly transfer inside the photoanode and thereby enhances mass transport. The feasibility of the developed gas diffusion photoanode is demonstrated by degrading toluene as a model gaseous pollutant. It is shown that the newly-developed PFC yields better electricity generation and toluene removal efficiency due to the enhanced mass transport of toluene and the eliminated interference of gas bubbles. The short-circuit current density and maximum power density of the PFC with a gas diffusion TiO₂ photoanode (0.1 mA/cm² and 0.02 mW/cm²) are about 3.3 times and 4 times as those of the bubbling PFC (0.03 mA/cm² and 0.005 mW/cm²), respectively. Both the discharging performance and toluene removal efficiency increase with increasing the light intensity and electrolyte concentration, while there exists an optimal gas flow rate leading to the best performance. The present work provides an innovative strategy for clean processing of volatile organic compounds while recycling the contained chemical energy.

Resveratrol-induced SIRT1 activation inhibits glycolysis-fueled angiogenesis under rheumatoid arthritis conditions independent of HIF-1α

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the impacts of SIRT1 activation on rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related angiogenesis.

METHODS

HUVECs were cultured by different human serum. Intracellular metabolites were quantified by UPLC-MS. Next, HUVECs and rat vascular epithelial cells under different inflammatory conditions were treated by a SIRT1 agonist resveratrol (RSV). Cytokines and biochemical indicators were detected by corresponding kits. Protein and mRNA expression levels were assessed by immunoblotting and PCR methods, respectively. Angiogenesis capabilities were evaluated by migration, wound-healing and tube-formation experiments. To down-regulate certain signals, gene-specific siRNA were applied.

RESULTS

Metabolomics study revealed the accelerated glycolysis in RA serum-treated HUVECs. It led to ATP accumulation, but did not affect GTP levels. RSV inhibited pro-angiogenesis cytokines production and glycolysis in both the cells, and impaired the angiogenesis potentials. These effects were mimicked by an energy metabolism interrupter bikini in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-primed HUVECs, largely independent of HIF-1α. Both RSV and bikinin can inhibit the activation of the GTP-dependent pathway Rho/ROCK and reduce VEGF production. Abrogation of RhoA signaling reinforced HIF-1α silencing-brought changes in LPS-stimulated HUVECs, and overshadowed the anti-angiogenesis potentials of RSV.

CONCLUSION

Glycolysis provides additional energy to sustain Rho/ROCK activation in RA subjects, which promotes VEGF-driven angiogenesis and can be inhibited by SIRT1 activation.

How can vanillin improve the performance of lignocellulosic biomass conversion in an immobilized laccase microreactor system?

Gentle and effective pretreatment is necessary to produce clean lignocellulosic biomass-based fuels. Herein, inspired by the efficient lignin degradation in the foregut of termites, the microreactor system using immobilized laccase and recoverable vanillin was proposed. Firstly, the co-deposition coating of dopamine, hydrogen peroxide and copper sulfate was constructed for laccase immobilization and a high immobilization efficiency of 87.0% was obtained in 30 min. After storage for 10 days, 82.2% activity was maintained in the laccase-loaded microreactor, which is 210.0% higher than free laccase. In addition, 6% (w/w) vanillin can improve lignin degradation in the laccase-loaded microreactor without impairing laccase activity, leading to a 47.3% increment in cellulose accessibility. Finally, a high cellulose conversion rate of 88.1% can be achieved in 1 h with glucose productivity of 2.62 g L^-1 h^-1. These demonstrated that the appropriate addition of vanillin can synergize with immobilized laccase to enhance the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass.

Light-Controlled Particle Enrichment Patterns in Droplets

Precision manipulation of particle-enrichment patterns in droplets is challenging but important in biochemical analysis and clinical diagnosis. Herein, a light strategy for precisely manipulating particle enrichment patterns is reported. Focused laser irradiation to the droplet induces a Marangoni flow owing to a localized photothermal effect, which carries in-droplet particles and concentrates them at the laser-spot-acted region. Owing to high flexibility of light, multiple particle-enriched sites are formed in a droplet, and the concentrated particles can be transported and reconstructed on demand. In addition to the island-like enrichment pattern, this optical particle manipulation strategy enables the formation of various particle-enriched patterns, such as the line-shape and circle-shape patterns. Further, light directly acts on the working fluid instead of target particles, considerably weakening dependence on particle properties. For particles whose density is similar to that of the working fluid, a portion of particles can still be concentrated. It is also found that only a small portion of submicron particles can be concentrated, while nanoparticles are hardly concentrated by this light strategy. Moreover, high reconfigurability of light enables in-parallel high-throughput operations, which is demonstrated using two laser beams to form two particle enrichment sites in a droplet simultaneously. Finally, this light strategy is also demonstrated by concentrating cells and nucleic acid molecules. This work paves the way for the applications of optofluidics in cell sorting, point-of-care analysis, and drug screening.

Integrating wind-driven agitating blade into a floating photobioreactor to enhance fluid mixing and microalgae growth

Aiming at optimizing the poor fluid mixing state in the traditional horizontal floating photobioreactors and reducing the high energy consumption and operational cost induced by electric-driven mixing, a novel floating photobioreactor with an embedded wind-driven agitating blade (WDAB-FPBR) was proposed in this study, which can effectively utilize both wind and wave energy for fluid mixing. The results show that the selected wind-driven agitating blade contributed to a decrement of 75.3% in mixing time and an increment of 87.5% in mass transfer coefficient, and meanwhile strengthened the fluid velocity along the light gradient. Owing to the enhanced fluid flow and mixing properties, an even distribution of algae cells was achieved in the WDAB floating photobioreactor, which resulted in an improvement of 140% in the photosynthesis efficiency of microalgae. From this, the biomass yield and carbon removal ratio showed an increment of 88.9% and 73.9%, respectively.

A Self-Stratified Thermally Regenerative Battery Using Nanoprism Cu Covering Ni Electrodes for Low-Grade Waste Heat Recovery

Developing a low-cost and high-performance thermally regenerative battery (TRB) is significant for recovering low-grade waste heat. A self-stratified TRB induced by the density difference between electrolytes is proposed to remove the commercial anion exchange membrane (AEM) and avoid ammonia crossover. The simulation and experiment results show the uneven distribution of NH₃, verifying the feasibility of self-stratified electrolytes. For better power generation performance, nanoprism Cu covering Ni electrodes with a high specific surface area and a stable framework are adopted to provide more reaction active sites for fast charge transfer during discharge. A maximum power density (12.7 mW cm^-2) and a theoretical heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 2.4% (relative to Carnot efficiency of 27.5%) are obtained in the self-stratified TRB employing nanoprism Cu covering Ni electrodes. Moreover, the cost-effectiveness, simple structure, and sustainable discharge operation indicate that it will be a potential choice for energy conversion from low-grade heat.

Comprehensive modeling and predicting light transmission in microalgal biofilm

Biofilm-based microalgae culture combined with wastewater treatment is a promising biotechnology for environmental management. Light availability influences the accumulation of microalgal biomass and nutrient removal. A light attenuation model which comprehensively considered microalgal biofilm structure (density and biofilm thickness), pigments content, and extracellular polymeric substances content was developed to predict the light attenuation in biofilm according to the simplification of the radiative transfer equation. The predicted results were in good overall agreement with the experiment, with an average error of less than 9.02%. These factors (biofilm density, thickness, pigments content, and extracellular polymeric substances content) all contributed to the light intensity attenuation, but biofilm thickness caused the most dramatic attenuation under the same increment of relative change in actual culture. The scattering coefficient of the biofilm (0.433 m²/g) was less than that of the suspension (1.489 m²/g) under white incident light. It suggests that the dense structure of cells allows much light to be concentrated in the forward direction when transmitting. This model could be adopted to predict the light distribution in microalgal biofilm for the further design of efficient photobioreactors and the development of light optimization strategies.

Photoenzymatic decarboxylation: A promising way to produce sustainable aviation fuels and fine chemicals

As one of the fastest-growing carbon emission sources, the aviation sector is severely restricted by carbon emission reduction targets. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has emerged as the most potential alternative to traditional aviation fuel, but harsh production technologies limit its commercialization. Fatty acids photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvFAP), the latest discovered photoenzyme, provides promising approaches to produce various carbon-neutral biofuels and fine chemicals. This review highlights the state-of-the-art strategies to enhance the application of CvFAP in carbon-neutral biofuel and fine chemicals production, including supplementing alkane as decoy molecular, screening efficient CvFAP variants with directed evolution, constructing genetic strains, employing biphasic catalytic system, and immobilizing CvFAP in an efficient photobioreactor. Furthermore, future opportunities are suggested to enhance photoenzymatic decarboxylation and explore the catalytic mechanism of CvFAP. This review provides a broad context to improve CvFAP catalysis and advance its potential applications.

Temperature-controlled microalgae biofilm adsorption/desorption in a thermo-responsive light-guided 3D porous photo-bioreactor for CO2 fixation

Microalgae biofilm-based culture provides an efficient CO₂ reduction and wastewater treatment method for its high photosynthetic efficiency and density. As supporting substrates for microalgae biofilm, porous materials have a big available adsorption area, but mutual shading makes it difficult to transmit external light to the internal surface for attached cells' photosynthesis. Thus, light-guided particles (SiO₂) were introduced into photosensitive resin to fabricate a light-guided ordered porous photobioreactor (PBR) by 3D printing technology in this study. The space utilization of the PBR was significantly enhanced and the effective microalgae adsorption area was increased by 13.6 times. Further, a thermo-responsive hydrogel was grafted onto the surface of the substrate to form a smart temperature-controllable interface that could enhance microalgae adsorption and desorption in both directions. When the thermo-responsive layer received light, it would generate heat due to the hydrogel's photo-thermal effect. And the surface temperature would then raise to 33 °C, higher than the hydrogel phase transition point of 32 °C, making the surface shrinking and more hydrophobicity for microalgae cells attachment. The microalgae cells' adsorption capacity increased by 103%, resulting in a high microalgae growth rate of 3.572 g m^-2 d^-1. When turning off the light, the surface temperature would cool down to below 20 °C, the surface would shrink. And the biofilm shows a 564.7% increase in desorption ability, realizing temperature-controlled microalgae harvesting.

Insight into the comprehensive effect of carbon dioxide, light intensity and glucose on heterotrophic-assisted phototrophic microalgae biofilm growth: A multifactorial kinetic model

Heterotrophic-assisted photoautotrophic microalgae biofilm cultivation was an alternative way to realize CO₂ reduction and wastewater treatment. Growth kinetics supplied a channel to better understand how the cultivation conditions affect microalgal growth and CO₂ reduction. However, the two growth modes (heterotroph and photoautotroph) have different needs for organic and inorganic nutrients. Thus, combining the threshold theory and multiplication theory, an integral multifactorial kinetic model that looking insight into the comprehensive effect of glucose, CO₂, light intensity, and nitrate was developed for heterotrophic-assisted photoautotrophic microalgae biofilm growth in this study. R² between model and experiment was 0.99. It predicted the maximum specific growth rate and maximum CO₂ consumption rate of heterotrophic-assisted photoautotrophic microalgae biofilm was 1.868 h^-1 and 1.02 h^-1, respectively. This model fully explained the influence of the main factors on microalgae biofilm growth and reasonably predicted the growth rate of microalgae biofilm under different growth conditions.

MOF-Derived Ni Single-Atom Catalyst with Abundant Mesopores for Efficient Mass Transport in Electrolytic Bicarbonate Conversion

Direct electrolytic CO₂ capture solution (e.g., bicarbonate), which bypasses the energy-intensive processes of CO₂ desorption, offers a unique route for CO₂ conversion to fuels or value-added chemicals. Nonprecious Ni single-atom catalysts (SACs) anchored on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess abundant porous structures and exhibit a high selectivity for CO production. However, these MOF-derived Ni SACs are usually synthesized by a series of complex procedures, and their abundant micropores (<2 nm) also reduce the local reactant transport in the catalysts. Herein, we report a simple one-step pyrolysis method to prepare a MOF-derived Ni SAC that can efficiently boost bicarbonate conversion to CO. The abundant mesopores around 35.4 nm significantly enhance the transport of local reactants in the catalysts. At a high current density of 100 mA/cm², the tailored catalyst shows 67.2% Faradaic efficiency of CO, which, to the best of our knowledge, exceeds the state-of-the-art precious Ag nanoparticle catalysts reported so far. This study highlights the significance of developing nonprecious catalysts for employment in large-scale bicarbonate electrolysis conversion devices.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Carbon-Based Photothermal Superhydrophobic Materials with Thermal Insulation Micropores During Anti-icing/Deicing

Photothermal deicing is a noncontact, economically, efficient, and environmentally friendly melting/preventing ice method. Obtaining a cheap, easily fabricated material with high photothermal conversion and deicing efficiency is a challenge. Here, carbon-based photothermal superhydrophobic materials with thermal insulation micropores were prepared by using the salt-template. We demonstrate that the microholes array structure can enhance light absorption and hydrophobicity of the material, and the micropores structure can inhibit the heat transfer from the surface to the subcooled substrate, which synergistically greatly enhances the photothermal conversion. A heat transfer model was established to clarify the influence mechanisms of air cushion on interfacial heat transfer during the photothermal anti-icing and deicing process. The self-cleaning, flexibility, mechanical, and chemical stability tests show that the material has the potential for outdoor application. The prepared materials with high photothermal deicing efficiency provide a new way for the anti-icing and deicing of outdoor equipment.

Removal of oxytetracycline and ofloxacin in wastewater by microalgae-bacteria symbiosis for bioenergy production

The development of microalgae-bacteria symbiosis for treating wastewater is flourishing owing to its high biomass productivity and exceptional ability to purify contaminants. A nature-selected microalgae-bacteria symbiosis, mainly consisting of Dictyosphaerium and Pseudomonas, was used to treat oxytetracycline (OTC), ofloxacin (OFLX), and antibiotic-containing swine wastewater. Increased antibiotic concentration gradually reduced biomass productivity and intricately changed symbiosis composition, while 1 mg/L OTC accelerated the growth of symbiosis. The symbiosis biomass productivity reached 3.4-3.5 g/L (5.7-15.3 % protein, 18.4-39.3 % carbohydrate, and 2.1-3.9 % chlorophyll) when cultured in antibiotic-containing swine wastewater. The symbiosis displayed an excellent capacity to remove 76.3-83.4 % chemical oxygen demand, 53.5-62.4 % total ammonia nitrogen, 97.5-100.0 % total phosphorus, 96.3-100.0 % OTC, and 32.8-60.1 % OFLX in swine wastewater. The microbial community analysis revealed that the existence of OTC/OFLX increased the richness and evenness of microalgae but reduced bacteria species in microalgae-bacteria, and the toxicity of OFLX to bacteria was stronger than that of OTC.

Microalgae cultivation for antibiotic oxytetracycline wastewater treatment

Microalgae-based technology provides a potential approach to biologically treating oxytetracycline (OTC) wastewater due to its environmental friendliness, low cost, and high efficiency. However, the OTC degradation and transformation characteristics by microalgae are still unclear and need further exploration. This study used microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana MB-1 for OTC wastewater treatment. The OTC with an initial concentration less than 50 mg L^-1 promoted microalgae growth, while OTC with a concentration higher than 100 mg L^-1 inhibited microalgae growth significantly. More than 99% OTC was removed with the biomass productivity up to 1.8 g L^-1 when treated OTC with 10 mg L^-1 initial concentration for 7 days. Chlorophyll and total sugar contents decreased, while protein and lipid contents increased compared to the control without OTC. The malondialdehyde content firstly reduced but subsequently enhanced when increased OTC concentration, while superoxide dismutase content gradually enhanced, manifesting that traces of OTC stimulate microalgae antioxidant capacity, while the increasing OTC caused further oxidative damage to microalgae cells. The removal pathways of OTC mainly include photolysis (75.8%), biodegradation (17.8%), biosorption (3.6%), and hydrolysis (2.7%). Overall, removing OTC by microalgae was confirmed to be an excellent technology for treating antibiotics wastewater whilst accumulating microalgae biomass.

Efficient Removal of Pb2+ from Water by Bamboo-Derived Thin-Walled Hollow Ellipsoidal Carbon-Based Adsorbent

Lead ion (Pb²⁺) is one of the most common water pollutants. Herein, with bamboo as the raw material, we fabricate a thin-walled hollow ellipsoidal carbon-based adsorbent (CPCs900) containing abundant O-containing groups and carbon defects and having a specific surface area as large as 730.87 m² g^-1. CPCs900 shows a capacity of 37.26 mg g^-1 for adsorbing Pb²⁺ in water and an efficiency of 98.13% for removing Pb²⁺ from water. This is much better than the activated carbon commonly used for removing Pb²⁺ from water (12.19 mg g^-1, 30.48%). The bond interaction of Pb²⁺ with the O-containing groups on CPCs900 and the electrostatic interaction of Pb²⁺ with the electron-rich carbon defects on CPCs900 could be the main forces to drive Pb²⁺ adsorption on CPCs900. The outstanding adsorption performance of CPCs900 could be due to the abundant O-containing groups and carbon defects as well as the large specific surface area of CPCs900. Bamboo has a large reserve and a low price. The present work successfully converts bamboo into adsorbents with outstanding performances in removing Pb²⁺ from water. This is of great significance for meeting the huge industrial demand on highly efficient adsorbents for removing toxic metal ions from water.

Enhanced carbon dioxide biomethanation with hydrogen using anaerobic granular sludge and metal-organic frameworks: Microbial community response and energy metabolism analysis

In this work, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared to evaluate its impact on carbon dioxide (CO₂) biomethanization during anaerobic degradation (AD). The results showed that MOFs significantly improved the CO₂ biomethanation efficiency, especially in the AD reactors using a concentration of 1.0 g/L MOFs. Furthermore, MOFs promoted direct interspecific electron transfer and alleviated the hydrogen competition of bacteria. Meanwhile, hydrogenotrophic methanogens were enriched in the AD reactors with MOFs. After the addition of MOFs, there was 3.28 times and 3.41 times increase in the abundance of metabolic functions related to methanogenesis by CO₂ reduction with hydrogen and dark hydrogen oxidation, respectively. There was an increased abundance of all genes that encode the key enzymes used in methane metabolism. However, functional genes involved in nitrate reduction had their expressions inhibited. The work may offer a contribution to helping the industry achieve the carbon capture and utilization policy.

Biobased carbon dots production via hydrothermal conversion of microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

A promising green hydrothermal process was used to produce biobased nanomaterials carbon dots (CDs) by using microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) and its main model compounds (i.e., glucose, glycine, and octadecanoic acid). The possible reaction pathway including hydrolysis, Amadori rearrangement, cyclization/aromatization, and polymerization was first proposed for the hydrothermal process to produce microalgae-based CDs. Interactions among carbohydrates and proteins in microalgae were vital intermediate reactions in the generation of CDs. The mass yield of CDs reached 7.2% when the CP was hydrothermally treated with 20:1 of liquid-to-solid ratio at 230 °C for 6 h. It was confirmed that nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorous, and potassium were doped onto CP-based CDs (CD-CP) successfully without additional reagents or treatments. The CD-CP yield was 4.0-24.3 times higher than that of model compound-based CDs. Regarding morphology, CD-CP was constituted by many spherical nanoparticles smaller than 20 nm. These CDs emitted blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light, and the fluorescence quantum yield of CD-CP was 4.7-9.4 times higher than that of CP model compound-based CDs. Last, CD-CP displayed broad application prospects as a sensor for Fe³⁺ detection in wastewater with high sensitivity.

The correlation between the physicochemical properties and enzymatic hydrolyzability of hydrothermal pretreated wheat straw: A quantitative analysis

Hydrothermal pretreatment with diluted acid or alkali can disrupt the compact structure of wheat straw at a moderate temperature for efficient enzymatic saccharification. However, the quantitative analysis between the physicochemical properties and enzymatic hydrolyzability of hydrothermal pretreated lignocellulose was rarely investigated, which hindered the development of model-based applications for process design and control. Herein, correlation analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted to elucidate the dominant factors affecting the enzymatic hydrolyzability and quantitative relationship between them. CA results suggested the major positive factor affecting carbohydrate conversion was cellulose content (r = 0.86). Through logarithmic processing and linear combination, these intercorrelated factors were successfully converted into two newly uncorrelated variables named the first principal component (PC1) and the second principal component (PC2). The initial hydrolysis rate and carbohydrate conversion can be well predicted by PC1 and PC2 scores through multiple linear regression with a high R-squared (0.91 and 0.80).

Bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate for microalgal photosynthetic biofilm to bio-remove ammonia nitrogen from high turbidity wastewater

Treatment technologies based on microalgal biofilms have an enormous potential for dealing with water pollution because they can efficiently redirect nutrients from wastewater to renewable biomass feedstock. However, poor light transmittance is caused by the high turbidity of wastewater, which hinders the commercial application of microalgal biofilm-based wastewater treatment. Here, a bifunctional substrate with lighting and biofilm support functions was constructed using a light guide plate. In a biofilm photobioreactor (bPBR) with a bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate (BL/S substrate), light can directly irradiate the biofilm to avoid attenuation by the turbid wastewater. Direct irradiation of light onto the biofilm led to a 93.0% enhancement of microalgal photoconversion efficiency when compared to that of a supporting substrate without lighting (SO substrate). Meanwhile, the maximum growth rate of the microalgal biofilm on the BL/S substrate was 8.7 g m^-2 d^-1, which was increased by 60.3%. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) from the digested wastewater contributed by the microalgal biofilm reached 22.6 mg L^-1 d^-1, which was higher than the previously reported that of NH₄⁺-N from turbid digested wastewater by the biofilms. Furthermore, the BL/S substrate can facilitate the secretion of abundant extracellular polymeric substrates, which results in the stable adhesion of the biofilm onto the BL/S substrate. The optical density of the microalgae cells at the outlet of the bPBR with BL/S substrate was below 0.1, which was 94% lower than that of the bPBR with the SO substrate. The results indicated the BL/S substrate may avoid the loss of microalgal biomass, and almost all biomass could be easily harvested from the biofilm for algae-based biomass resources. Consequently, this study can offer a promising alternative with efficient treatment technologies for wastewater with high turbidity.

Gradient electro-processing strategy for efficient conversion of harmful algal blooms to biohythane with mechanisms insight

Globally eruptive harmful algal blooms (HABs) have caused numerous negative effects on aquatic ecosystem and human health. Conversion of HABs into biohythane via dark fermentation (DF) is a promising approach to simultaneously cope with environmental and energy issues, but low HABs harvesting efficiency and biohythane productivity severely hinder its application. Here we designed a gradient electro-processing strategy for efficient HABs harvesting and disruption, which had intrinsic advantages of no secondary pollution and high economic feasibility. Firstly, low current density (0.888-4.444 mA/cm²) was supplied to HABs suspension to harvest biomass via electro-flocculation, which achieved 98.59% harvesting efficiency. A mathematic model considering coupling effects of multi-influencing factors on HABs harvesting was constructed to guide large-scale application. Then, the harvested HABs biomass was disrupted via electro-oxidation under higher current density (44.44 mA/cm²) to improve bioavailability for DF. As results, hydrogen and methane yields of 64.46 mL/ (g VS) and 171.82 mL/(g VS) were obtained under 6 min electro-oxidation, along with the highest energy yield (50.1 kJ/L) and energy conversion efficiency (44.87%). Mechanisms of HABs harvesting and disruption under gradient electro-processing were revealed, along with the conversion pathways from HABs to biohythane. Together, this work provides a promising strategy for efficient disposal of HABs with extra benefit of biohythane production.
