Abstract
Phytic acid-modified carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-PA) has been investigated as a promising adsorbent for the removal of uranium from aqueous solutions. The synthesis of CMC-PA involves the hydrogen bonding interaction between CMC and PA, resulting in the incorporation of PA groups onto the cellulose backbone. The hydrophilicity, reusability and adsorption capacity of the prepared CMC-PA hydrogel have improved with the increase of PA content. Moreover, the adsorption experiments were conducted by varying parameters such as pH, initial uranium concentration, and contact time. The results showed that CMC-PA exhibited excellent uranium adsorption performance, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 436 mg/g. In addition, the material exhibits excellent reusability, and the reusability improves with the increase of crosslinking density, indicating that the crosslinking structure of the polymer gel can effectively enhance the structural stability of the material. Furthermore, CMC-PA also exhibits high selective adsorption performance towards uranium ions in the presence of various competing ions. Its high adsorption capacity, reusability, and selectivity make it a promising candidate for high-performance uranium ion adsorbents.

Abstract
Contamination of the aqueous environment caused by the presence of heavy metal ions and oils is a growing concern that must be addressed to reduce their detrimental impact on living organisms and safeguard the environment. Recent efficient and environmentally friendly remediation methods for the treatment of water are based on third-generation bioaerogels as emerging applications for the removal of heavy metal ions and oils from aqueous systems. The peculiarities of these materials are various, considering their high specific surface area and low density, together with a highly porous three-dimensional structure and tunable surface chemistry. This review illustrates the recent progress in aerogels developed from cellulose and chitosan as emerging materials in water treatment. The potential of aerogel-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is reported in terms of adsorption efficacy and reusability. Despite various gaps affecting the manufacturing and production costs of aerogels that actually limit their successful implementation in the market, the research progress suggests that bio-based aerogels are ready to be used in water-treatment applications in the near future.

Abstract
Herein, magnetic layered double oxides coated with carbon dots (MLCs) were synthesized through introducing sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and FeCl2 into Co/Al LDH for capturing uranium from aqueous solution. When the molar ratio of Co to Al was 4 : 1, the MLC composite possessed the strongest affinity to uranium(VI) in solution with short equilibrium time (<160 min), high adsorption efficiency (94.31%) and large removal capacity (513.85 mg g-1). The adsorption behavior of MLCs for uranium(VI) was well fitted with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, suggesting that the monolayer chemical adsorption was the rate-limiting step. Besides, MLC-3 could be reused by using 0.15 mol L-1 ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid as an eluent and the removal percentage still remained at a high level (>83.3%) after 5 adsorption/desorption cycles. Redox reaction, chemical complexation and electrostatic attraction were proved to play significant roles in uranium(VI) separation. Therefore, MLC-3 could be used as a potential adsorbent in uranium(VI)-containing wastewater treatment due to its excellent adsorption performance for uranium(VI).

Abstract
Due to the existence of water, it is still a challenge to conduct chemical modification on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) hydrogels with active double bonds. A simple one-pot and one-step method for constructing "living" CNF hydrogel with double bond was created at room temperature. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methacryloyl chloride (MACl) was used to introduce physical-trapped, chemical-anchored and functional double bonds into TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) hydrogels. TOCN hydrogel could be fabricated within just 0.5 h, the minimum dosage of MACl could be reduced to 3.22 mg/g (MACl/TOCN hydrogel). Furthermore, the CVD methods showed high efficiency for mass production and recyclability. Moreover, the chemical "living" reactivity of the introduced double bonds were verified by the freezing and UV crosslinking, radical polymerization and thiol-ene click reaction. Compared with pure TOCN hydrogel, the obtained functionalized TOCN hydrogel exhibited remarkable improvements in mechanical properties, with enhancements of 12.34 times and 2.04 times, as well as an increase in hydrophobicity by 2.14 times and a fluorescence performance improvement of 2.93 times.

Abstract
In this work, a novel g-C3N4 filled, phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan gel bead (P-CS@CN) was successfully prepared to adsorb U(VI) from water. The separation performance of chitosan was improved by introducing more functional groups. At pH 5 and 298 K, the adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity could reach 98.0 % and 416.7 mg g-1, respectively. After adsorption, the morphological structure of P-CS@CN did not change and adsorption efficiency remained above 90 % after 5 cycles. P-CS@CN exhibited an excellent applicability in water environment based on dynamic adsorption experiments. Thermodynamic analyses demonstrated the value of ΔG, manifesting the spontaneity of U(VI) adsorption process on P-CS@CN. The positive values of ΔH and ΔS showed that the U(VI) removal behavior of P-CS@CN was an endothermic reaction, indicating that the increase of temperature was great benefit to the removal. The adsorption mechanism of P-CS@CN gel bead could be summarized as the complexation reaction with the surface functional groups. This study not only developed an efficient adsorbent for the treatment of radioactive pollutants, but also provided a simple and feasible strategy for the modification of chitosan-based adsorption materials.

Abstract
The development of nuclear energy has led to the depletion of uranium resources and now presents the challenge of treating radioactive wastewater. Extracting uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater has been identified as an effective strategy for addressing these issues. However, extracting uranium from nuclear wastewater and seawater is still extremely challenging. In this study, an amidoxime-modified feather keratin aerogel (FK-AO aerogel) was prepared using feather keratin for efficient uranium adsorption. The FK-AO aerogel showed an impressive adsorption capacity of 585.88 mg·g-1 in an 8 ppm uranium solution, with a calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 990.10 mg·g-1. Notably, the FK-AO aerogel demonstrated excellent selectivity for U(VI) in simulated seawater that contained coexisting heavy metal ions. In a uranium solution having a salinity of 35 g·L-1 and a concentration of 0.1-2 ppm, the FK-AO aerogel achieved a uranium removal rate of greater than 90 %, indicating its effectiveness in adsorbing uranium in environments having high salinity and low concentration. This suggests that FK-AO aerogel is an ideal adsorbent for extracting uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater, and it is also expected that it could be used in industrial applications for extracting uranium from seawater.

Abstract
Water pollution is a significant environmental issue that has emerged because of industrial and economic growth. Human activities such as industrial, agricultural, and technological practices have increased the levels of pollutants in the environment, causing harm to both the environment and public health. Dyes and heavy metals are major contributors to water pollution. Organic dyes are a major concern because of their stability in water and their potential to absorb sunlight, increasing the temperature and disrupting the ecological balance. The presence of heavy metals in the production of textile dyes adds to the toxicity of the wastewater. Heavy metals are a global issue that can harm both human health and the environment and are mainly caused by urbanization and industrialization. To address this issue, researchers have focused on developing effective water treatment procedures, including adsorption, precipitation, and filtration. Among these methods, adsorption is a simple, efficient, and cheap method for removing organic dyes from water. Aerogels have shown potential as a promising adsorbent material because of their low density, high porosity, high surface area, low thermal and electrical conductivity, and ability to respond to external stimuli. Biomaterials such as cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, carrageenan, and graphene have been extensively studied for the production of sustainable aerogels for water treatment. Cellulose, which is abundant in nature, has received significant attention in recent years. This review highlights the potential of cellulose-based aerogels as a sustainable and efficient material for removing dyes and heavy metals from water during the treatment process.

Abstract
Nowadays, the fast expansion of the economy and industry results in a considerable volume of wastewater being released, severely affecting water quality and the environment. It has a significant influence on the biological environment, both terrestrial and aquatic plant and animal life, and human health. Therefore, wastewater treatment is a global issue of great concern. Nanocellulose's hydrophilicity, easy surface modification, rich functional groups, and biocompatibility make it a candidate material for the preparation of aerogels. The third generation of aerogel is a nanocellulose-based aerogel. It has unique advantages such as a high specific surface area, a three-dimensional structure, is biodegradable, has a low density, has high porosity, and is renewable. It has the opportunity to replace traditional adsorbents (activated carbon, activated zeolite, etc.). This paper reviews the fabrication of nanocellulose-based aerogels. The preparation process is divided into four main steps: the preparation of nanocellulose, gelation of nanocellulose, solvent replacement of nanocellulose wet gel, and drying of nanocellulose wet aerogel. Furthermore, the research progress of the application of nanocellulose-based aerogels in the adsorption of dyes, heavy metal ions, antibiotics, organic solvents, and oil-water separation is reviewed. Finally, the development prospects and future challenges of nanocellulose-based aerogels are discussed.

Abstract
Developing the lignin-based functional materials for uranium uptake is extremely attractive, but challenging due to the complex structure, poor solubility and reactivity of lignin. Herein, a novel phosphorylated lignin (LP)/sodium alginate/ carboxylated carbon nanotube (CCNT) composite aerogel (LP@AC) with vertically oriented lamellar configuration was created for efficient uranium uptake from acidic wastewater. The successful phosphorylation of lignin by a facile solvent-free mechanochemical method achieved more than six-times enhancement in U(VI) uptake capacity of lignin. While, the incorporation of CCNT not only increased the specific surface area of LP@AC, but also improved its mechanical strength as a reinforcing phase. More importantly, the synergies between LP and CCNT components endowed LP@AC with an excellent photothermal performance, resulting in a local heat environment on LP@AC and further boosting the U(VI) uptake. Consequently, the light irradiated LP@AC exhibited an ultrahigh U(VI) uptake capacity (1308.87 mg g-1), 61.26% higher than that under dark condition, excellent adsorptive selectivity and reusability. After exposure to 10 L of simulated wastewater, above 98.21% of U(VI) ions could be rapidly captured by LP@AC under light irradiation, revealing the tremendous feasibility in industrial application. The electrostatic attraction and coordination interaction were considered as the main mechanism for U(VI) uptake.

Abstract
Ultralight aerogels with low bulk density, highly porous nature, and functional performance have received significant focus in the field of water pollution treatment. Here, high-crystallinity, large surface-aera metal frame-work (ZIF-8) was efficiently utilized to assist in the preparation of ultralight yet highly oil and organic solvent adsorption capacity, double-network cellulose nanofibers/chitosan-based aerogels through a physical entanglement and scalable freeze-drying approach. After chemical vapor deposition with methyltrimethoxysilane, a hydrophobic surface was obtained with a water contact angle of 132.6°. The synthetic ultralight aerogel had low density (15.87 mg/cm3) and high porosity (99.01 %). Moreover, the aerogel had a three-dimensional porous structure, which endowed it with high adsorption capacity (35.99 to 74.55 g/g) for organic solvent, and outstanding cyclic stability (>88 % of the adsorption capacity after 20 cycles). At the same time, aerogel removes oil from various oil/water mixtures by gravity alone and has excellent separation performance. This work holding excellent properties in terms of convenient, low-cost, scalability to manufacture environmentally friendly biomass-based materials for oily water pollution treatment.

Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021-0.0103 g/cm3) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64-447.26 m2/g), outperforming the common polysaccharide-based aerogels. Benefitting from their superior structural features (honeycomb interconnected pores and high porosity), CSTU aerogels demonstrate fast sorption rates and excellent performance in sorption of heavy metal ions from highly-concentrated single or binary-component mixtures (1.11 mmol Ag (I)/g and 0.48 mmol Pb(II)/g). A remarkable recycling stability was observed after five sorption-desorption-regeneration cycles when the removal efficiency was up to 80 %. These results support the high potential of CSTU aerogels in the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. Moreover, the Ag(I)-loaded CSTU aerogels exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, the killing rate being around 100 %. This data points towards the potential application of developed aerogels in circular economy, by employing the spent Ag(I)-loaded aerogels in the biological decontamination of waters.

Abstract
Aerogels are a class of lightweight, nanoporous, and nanostructured materials with diverse chemical compositions and a huge potential for applications in a broad spectrum of fields. This has led the IUPAC to include them in the top ten emerging technologies in chemistry for 2022. This review provides an overview of aerogel-based adsorbents that have been used for the removal and recovery of uranium from aqueous environments, as well as an insight into the physicochemical parameters affecting the adsorption efficiency and mechanism. Uranium removal is of particular interest regarding uranium analysis and recovery, to cover the present and future uranium needs for nuclear power energy production. Among the methods used, such as ion exchange, precipitation, and solvent extraction, adsorption-based technologies are very attractive due to their easy and low-cost implementation, as well as the wide spectrum of adsorbents available. Aerogel-based adsorbents present an extraordinary sorption capacity for hexavalent uranium that can be as high as 8.8 mol kg−1 (2088 g kg−1). The adsorption data generally follow the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetic data are in most cases better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. An evaluation of the thermodynamic data reveals that the adsorption is generally an endothermic, entropy-driven process (ΔH0, ΔS0 > 0). Spectroscopic studies (e.g., FTIR and XPS) indicate that the adsorption is based on the formation of inner-sphere complexes between surface active moieties and the uranyl cation. Regeneration and uranium recovery by acidification and complexation using carbonate or chelating ligands (e.g., EDTA) have been found to be successful. The application of aerogel-based adsorbents to uranium removal from industrial processes and uranium-contaminated waste waters was also successful, assuming that these materials could be very attractive as adsorbents in water treatment and uranium recovery technologies. However, the selectivity of the studied materials towards hexavalent uranium is limited, suggesting further developments of aerogel materials that could be modified by surface derivatization with chelating agents (e.g., salophen and iminodiacetate) presenting high selectivity for uranyl moieties.

Abstract
Strategic metals play an indispensable role in the related industries. Their extraction and recovery from water are of great significance due to both their rapid consumption and environmental concern. Biofibrous nanomaterials have shown great advantages in capturing metal ions from water. Recent progress in extraction of typical strategic metal ions such as noble metal ions, nuclear metal ions, and Li-battery related metal ions is reviewed here using typical biological nanofibrils like cellulose nanofibrils, chitin nanofibrils, and protein nanofibrils, as well as their assembly forms like fibers, aerogels/hydrogels, and membranes. An overview of advances in material design and preparation, extraction mechanism, dynamics/thermodynamics, and performance improvement in the last decade is provided. And at last, we propose the current challenges and future perspectives for promoting biological nanofibrous materials toward extracting strategic metal ions in practical conditions of natural seawater, brine, and wastewater.

Abstract
This study highlights the potential use of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from kenaf fiber as a dominant phase for aerogel application. CNCs were modified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) using the sol-gel method and bound with gamma-irradiated cross-linked gelatin. The properties of the aerogel were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and water contact angle (WCA). Compression and oil absorption tests were performed to study the aerogels' mechanical and oil absorption properties. A decrease in the OH peak and improved hydrophobicity of CNCs in CNC-MTMS suggested the successful grafting of MTMS onto CNCs, as shown in the FTIR and WCA analyses. Several absorption peaks in the FTIR spectrum shifted, disappeared, or reduced, implying a formation of crosslink between gelatin molecules and hydrogen bonding between CNC and gelatin. FESEM micrographs showed well-organized pores in the gamma-irradiated aerogel, which contribute to increased compressive strength. The oil absorption test indicated that gamma-irradiated CNC-MTMS/gelatin could be a good oil absorbent. Furthermore, this aerogel showed good reusability, where only 4 % of crude oil absorption reduction occurred by the eighth cycle. The combined properties of these aerogel materials can provide good mechanical and oil absorption performance.

Abstract
Water is an important raw material in the food production process. Maintaining the quality and safety of water is very important in the food field. In this study, a simple novel fluorescent nanocellulose hydrogel (FNH) was prepared for the detection and removal of heavy metals (Fe3+ and Pb2+) in aqueous solutions based on carbon dots (CDs). The CDs were grafted onto the carboxylated nanocellulose (CNC) by the EDC/NHS coupling method, and then the nanocellulose (NC), CNC, and FNH were characterized by FTIR analysis. The effect of adsorption environment on FNH adsorption capacity was also investigated. After carboxylation and grafting of CDs, the adsorption capacity of nanocellulose to Fe3+ and Pb2+ was greatly improved, and it was also allowed to make fast visual responses to Fe3+ as an optical sensor to determine the concentration of Fe3+ through the visual signal. Static adsorption experiment demonstrated that the removal rate of Fe3+ and Pb2+ by FNH exceeded 69.4% and 98.2%, and the adsorption capacity amount reached 98.3 mg/g and 442.0 mg/g. At the same time, due to the fluorescence quenching effect of Fe3+, FNH could also be used for the detection of Fe3+ concentration in aqueous solution, and the limit of detection (LOD) could reach 62.5 mg/L.

Abstract
Recycling uranium from seawater is of great significance to the development of nuclear industry. However, due to high salinity and low uranium concentration in seawater, there are still many challenges in current seawater uranium extraction technology. In this study, waste feather fibers (FF) were used as raw materials to develop a phosphonate-functionalized feather fiber (FF-PT). The study on the adsorption performance shows that FF-PT have good adsorption and recycling performance for uranium. The study on the adsorption performance shows that FF-PT have good adsorption and recycling performance for uranium. The adsorption capacity reaches up to 342.5 mg·g-1 in the 8 ppm uranium solution, and service life of at least 10 cycles were obtained. In addition, in the environment with high salinity and the coexistence of metal competitive ions, FF-PT also shows excellent selectivity, and it can reach 3.22 mg·g-1 adsorption capacity after immersed in natural seawater for 30 days. Combined with the results of economic analysis, we believe that the FF-PT has broad application prospects in the industrialized uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract
Contamination of the aquatic ecosystem by heavy metals is a growing concern that has yet to be addressed with an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly solution. Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth's crust and also result from anthropogenic activities. Due to the rapid increase in industrialization, there is an increase in consumer demands across various industries such as metal processing, mining sector, agricultural activities, etc. and this has led to an increase in heavy metal concentrations in the aqueous environment. Cellulose-based aerogels are a novel third-generation of aerogels that have recently attracted a lot of attention due to their high adsorption efficiency, eco-friendly prospects and cost effectiveness. In this review, recent literature on cellulose-based aerogel adsorbents used for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution has been compiled. The preparation of cellulose-based aerogels, adsorption mechanisms, effects of experimental factors such as pH, temperature, contact time, initial metal concentration and adsorbent dose have been discussed. In addition, cost analysis of cellulose-based adsorbents and some challenges in this research field along with recommendations of improvements have been presented. It can be concluded that functionalizing of cellulose-based aerogels with amine groups, thiol groups, other compounds such as nanobentonite and chitosan results in very high adsorption capacities. The adsorption studies revealed that pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most commonly encountered adsorption kinetic model, and the most commonly encountered adsorption isotherm model was the Langmuir isotherm model. The main adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic interaction, complexation and ion exchange.

Abstract
In order to protect environment and save uranium resources, it was necessary to find a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium recovery from wastewater. In this work, we used a freeze-drying-calcination method to synthesize HAP aerogel to effectively remove uranium. Compared with commercially available nano-hydroxyapatite, HAP aerogel presented better adsorption performance. This was because the as-prepared HAP aerogel presented continuous porous structure, which could provide more active sites for the adsorption to uranium. The uranium removal efficiency of HAP aerogel arrived 99.4% within 10 min and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 2087.6 mg g-1 at pH = 4.0 and 298 K. In addition, the immobilization of uranium on HAP aerogel was chemisorption, which was probably due to adsorption, dissolution-precipitation and ions exchange. These results indicated that the as-prepared HAP aerogel could be widely used as a high efficiency and potential adsorbent for the treatment of uranium-containing wastewater in the future.

Abstract
Traditional aerogels lack specific functional groups for the adsorption of Pb2+, which results in a low adsorption capacity and limits the application scope. Novel porous pectin-based aerogels (PPEAs) were prepared by incorporating polyethylenimine (PEI) using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a cross-linker for the removal of Pb2+ from water. The cross-linking mechanism, morphology, mechanical strength, thermal stability, adsorption properties, and mechanism of the aerogels were investigated. The aerogels possessed several desirable features, such as a large maximum Pb2+ adsorption capacity (373.7 mg/g, tested at pH 5.0), ultralight (as low as 63.4 mg/cm3), high mechanical strength (stress above 0.24 MPa at 50% strain), and easy recyclability. Meanwhile, the equilibrium adsorption data was well described by the Langmuir-Freundlich (Sips) model and the kinetic adsorption process was well fitted using the pseudo-second-order model. The donor groups, such as -NH2, and oxygen-containing functional groups were responsible for the Pb2+ adsorption, which was confirmed by the FTIR and XPS analysis. The excellent characteristics mean that PPEAs are highly effective adsorbents in the remediation of lead-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Here, we have developed a novel bilayer hollow amphiphilic biosorbent (BHAB-3) with large adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption kinetics, and cost-effective for the removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was based on the clever use of freeze-drying to fix the structure, secondary modification of the carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres with polyethyleneimine and cross-linking by glutaraldehyde. The consequences of pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on adsorption were investigated. The Langmuir model fits showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of the two target heavy metal ions reached 835.91 and 294.79 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, BHAB-3 was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS synergistically, showing that it exhibits a strong complexation ability for Cu(II) and a strong electrostatic effect for Cr(VI). Adsorption and desorption experiments showed only a slight decrease in the adsorption capacity of the BHAB-3 for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions after 5 and 26 cycles, respectively. Given the excellent properties of this adsorbent, it is a promising candidate for heavy metal ion removal.
