Abstract
Circadian rhythms are cell-intrinsic time-keeping mechanisms that allow organisms to adapt to 24-h environmental changes, ensuring coordinated physiological functions by aligning internal metabolic oscillations with external timing cues. Disruption of daily metabolic rhythms is associated with pathological events such as cancer development, yet the mechanisms by which perturbed metabolic rhythms contribute to tumorigenesis remain unclear. Herein we review how circadian clocks drive balanced rhythmic metabolism which in turn governs physiological functions of locomotor, immune, and neuroendocrine systems. Misaligned metabolic rhythms cause pathological states which further drive cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis. Restoring the balance of metabolic rhythms with chemical, hormonal, and behavioral interventions serves as a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder, involving the accelerated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, associated with an increased probability of adverse outcomes including falls. The circadian timing system may be involved in molecular pathways leading to sarcopenia in older adults. We aimed to provide an updated and systematic map of the available evidence on the role of the circadian timing system in sarcopenia, specifically related to the aging process. METHODS We developed a scoping review protocol following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, RESULTS: We identified 373 papers from three online databases, screened 97 for full-text analysis. and selected 37 papers for inclusion. These papers included 17 primary research studies on human persons, focusing on cortisol and melatonin secretion, rest-activity rhythms, chrono-exercise, and chrono-dietary regimens, 9 primary research studies on animal models (mice, rats, fruit flies) focusing on direct expression measurement or mutations of core clock genes, and 11 narrative reviews. CONCLUSION While several reports supported the role of the circadian timing system in sarcopenia, specifically related to the aging process, the available evidence is fragmented and limited. The field is thus open to preclinical and clinical research that addresses the wide knowledge gaps in the available evidence, taking advantage of what has already been published to optimize and refine experimental and clinical protocols.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW The aim of this review is to discuss and evaluate diabetic sarcopenia (DS) and its relationship with nutrition by discussing the mechanisms of diabetic sarcopenia in detail and comprehensively reviewing the literature. RECENT FINDINGS Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) affects approximately 25% of people aged 50 years and over and indicates a significant the cost of health for the elderly. Nutrition is an important part of these treatment approaches, and in this review, the literature was comprehensively reviewed, focusing on understanding the mechanisms of DS and discussing its relationship with nutrition. A comprehensive search was conducted on Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed from inception up to July 2024. The aim of nutritional treatment for DS is to improve muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance while improving diabetes-related metabolic risk and glucose levels. In this context, it is important to determine energy intake in individuals with DS according to calorie intake exceeding 30 kcal/kg. For these individuals, a protein intake of at least 1-1.2 g/kg/day is recommended, with an emphasis on the number and timing of meals and a nutritional pattern rich in branched chain amino acids (BCAA). In addition, it is important to adopt a diet rich in antioxidants and to choose diet patterns that contain sufficient levels of macro and micronutrients. The Mediterranean diet model can be a good diet option for individuals with DS. Comprehensive studies in this field are needed so that clinicians can make specific dietary recommendations for DS.

Abstract
The addition of low-dose protein to low protein-containing meals in middle-to-older aged adults may promote greater postprandial plasma aminoacidemia and mitigate declines in muscle health but may be dependent on the source and quality of protein consumed. This single-blind randomised study investigated postprandial plasma aminoacidemia and appetite regulatory responses to a typical lower protein-containing (∼0.07 g·kg body mass[BM]-1) mixed breakfast supplemented with ∼0.13 g·kg BM- 1 of whey protein concentrate (MB + WPC) or pea protein isolate (MB + PPI) in middle-to-older aged adults. Venous blood samples were collected whilst fasted and over a 180-min postprandial period to determine plasma amino acid and appetite hormone concentrations. Perceived appetite ratings were measured using Visual Analogue Scales. Plasma total amino acids and essential amino acids increased over time (both P < 0.05) with no between-group differences or overall availability over 180 min (incremental area under the curve (iAUC)). Plasma leucine concentrations increased over time (both P < 0.05) with greater peak concentrations (P = 0.032) and iAUC (P = 0.012) in MB + WPC compared with MB + PPI. Plasma total-ghrelin and total-GLP-1 concentrations and perceived ratings of hunger, fullness, and satiety were transiently altered following MB + WPC and MB + PPI (P < 0.05 for all), with no differences between groups. In middle-to-older aged adults, co-ingesting a small bolus of whey protein alongside a typical lower protein-containing breakfast elicits greater plasma leucinemia than co-ingestion of pea protein, with no differential impact on appetite regulation. Whether the addition of low-dose whey protein to typical meals of middle-to-older aged adults can enhance muscle anabolism without adversely affecting appetite remains to be determined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meeting protein intake recommendations is relevant for maintaining muscle mass. This study aimed to describe protein intake and its association with meal patterns and dietary patterns. METHODS An in-house designed, web-based 4-day record was used in the national dietary survey (in 2010/2011). Participants 60 years and older were included in the analysis (n = 533). Protein intake was described by hour of consumption, self-indicated meals and food source. Eating and drinking occasion (EDO) and food groups were defined, from which meal patterns and three a posteriori dietary patterns (using principal component analysis) were assessed. RESULTS We observed a mean protein intake of just over 1 g/kg body weight (bw) in both men and women. Over 50% of the protein intake was sourced from the food groups meat, fish and milk/yoghurt. A bolus intake of 30 g protein per meal was observed in a small proportion of participants at breakfast and lunch, but was most common at dinner (41% women and 56% men). No strong correlations were observed between protein intake and neither dietary patterns nor the number of EDOs. A 5 g higher protein intake at any meal, but not higher EDO frequency, was associated with higher odds of meeting a protein intake over 1.1 g/kg bw. CONCLUSIONS Protein intake over 1.1 g/kg bw was met by 44% of the participants. Lunch and dinner were the highest contributors to protein intake. Dietary and meal patterns were weakly associated with protein intake. Only total daily protein intake was associated with reaching > 1.1 g/kg bw.

Abstract
A low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) or ketogenic diet is commonly used by individuals who want to achieve ketosis, which can boost fat metabolism, increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce blood sugar spikes. However, many athletes are hesitant to utilize a diet that specifically restricts the intake of carbohydrates, an important source of energy for physical activity. Athletes usually adopt a high-carbohydrate or high-protein diet, depending on their goals. This review aims to examine the evidence for the impact of an LCD on athletes' aerobic, anaerobic, and upper and lower body strength performance. A systematic review of original studies was conducted for articles indexed in PubMed that utilized an LCD in athletes and reported athletic performance values. A total of 19 studies were included in the final synthesis. An LCD may aid in maintaining or increasing upper and lower body strength. However, this type of diet provides no consistent benefit and may even negatively impact some measures of aerobic and anaerobic performance. Taken together, no strong evidence indicates the benefit of an LCD on athletic performance. Athletes wishing to modify their diet for improved performance should consider possible diets with specific training and performance goals in mind.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breakfast is often termed the most important meal of the day. However, its importance to acute and chronic adaptations to exercise is currently not well summarized throughout the literature. METHODS A narrative review of the experimental literature regarding breakfast consumption's impact on acute and chronic exercise performance and alterations in body composition prior to November 2024 was conducted. To be included in this review, the selected investigations needed to include some aspect of either endurance or resistance training performance and be conducted in humans. RESULTS These findings suggest that breakfast consumption may benefit acute long-duration (>60 min) but not short-duration (<60 min) morning endurance exercise. Evening time trial performance was consistently inhibited following breakfast omission despite the resumption of eating midday. No or minimal impact of breakfast consumption was found when examining acute morning or afternoon resistance training or the longitudinal adaptations to either resistance or endurance training. Favorable changes in body composition were often noted following the omission of breakfast. However, this was primarily driven by the concomitant reduced kilocalorie intake. CONCLUSIONS Consuming breakfast may aid endurance athletes regularly performing exercise lasting >60 min in length. However, the morning meal's impact on resistance training and changes in body composition appears to be minimal. Although, as the body of literature is limited, future investigations are needed to truly ascertain the dietary practice's impact.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The distribution of protein intake throughout the day is frequently skewed, with breakfast having the lowest protein intake across all age groups. There is no review that addresses the association between breakfast protein intake and muscle mass and strength. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to summarize the literature on the relationship between protein intake during breakfast and muscle mass and strength in adults. METHODS This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Two independent reviewers screened and appraised the articles identified from 3 electronic databases (Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus) that focused on protein intake per meal and its impact on muscle-related outcomes. RESULTS A total of 14 763 articles were retrieved from 3 databases, and after the screening process, 15 articles were included for analysis. Approximately 58.8% of findings from 11 studies examining the association between high protein intake during breakfast and muscle mass indicated an increase in muscle mass among participants. Half of 6 studies (50.0%) exploring the relationship between high protein intake at breakfast and muscle strength demonstrated an increase in muscle strength. Consuming high amounts of protein at breakfast or more protein in the morning than in the evening was associated with an increase in the skeletal muscle index and lean body mass. CONCLUSION Protein consumption at breakfast revealed potential benefits in increasing muscle mass across 5 studies involving an elderly population and 2 studies encompassing middle-aged women and young men in our review. However, the relationship between protein intake at breakfast and muscle strength remains unclear. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are required to examine whether adults can preserve skeletal muscle health outcomes by consuming higher amounts of protein at breakfast.

Abstract
Background and aims Over the past decade, numerous studies investigating the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and handgrip strength and standing long jump have produced conflicting evidence, leading to uncertainty regarding this association. This study aimed to provide further clarity on the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and handgrip strength and standing long jump. Methods A comprehensive search of the literature up to September 15, 2023, was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and CNKI. Six studies related to grip strength and three studies related to standing long jump performance were included in the meta-analysis. For studies defining breakfast consumption frequency as an ordinal variable, the effect sizes of the lowest and highest frequency groups were analyzed. Results No significant differences in handgrip strength were found between the highest and lowest breakfast consumption groups. Furthermore, unlike in men, women with the highest frequency of breakfast consumption showed significantly higher handgrip strength levels than women with the lowest frequency of breakfast consumption. No significant positive associations were found between breakfast intake frequency and standing long jump levels. Conclusion These results suggest that while regular breakfast consumption may enhance handgrip strength in women, it does not influence standing long jump performance in both sexes. Abstract
Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in muscle strength, generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, and impaired physical performance, which are common outcomes used to screen, diagnose, and determine severity of sarcopenia in older adults. These outcomes are associated with poor quality of life, increased risk of falls, hospitalization, and mortality in this population. The development of sarcopenia is underpinned by aging, but other factors can lead to sarcopenia, such as chronic diseases, physical inactivity, inadequate dietary energy intake, and reduced protein intake (nutrition-related sarcopenia), leading to an imbalance between muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown. Protein digestion and absorption are also modified with age, as well as the reduced capacity of metabolizing protein, hindering older adults from achieving ideal protein consumption (i.e., 1-1.5 g/kg/day). Nutritional supplement strategies, like animal (i.e., whey protein) and plant-based protein, leucine, and creatine have been shown to play a significant role in improving outcomes related to sarcopenia. However, the impact of other supplements (e.g., branched-chain amino acids, isolated amino acids, and omega-3) on sarcopenia and related outcomes remain unclear. This narrative review will discuss the evidence of the impact of these nutritional strategies on sarcopenia outcomes in older adults.

Abstract
Physical inactivity as well as breakfast skipping is known as risk factor for various metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. We have previously reported that a breakfast skipping model, in which the timing of feeding is delayed, induces abnormal lipid metabolism by altering the circadian rhythm of lipid metabolism-related genes in rats. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the synergistic effect of physical inactivity and breakfast skipping on lipid metabolism. We adopted sciatic neurectomized rats as physically inactive models, because we confirmed that the rats mildly decreased their spontaneous locomotor activity compared to sham-operated rats. And then the physically inactive model rats were fed a mild high-fat diet during zeitgeber time (ZT) 12-0 in the control group and ZT16-0 in the breakfast skipping group for 11 days. Body weight gain and total food intake were similar in both groups. Breakfast skipping induced a significant visceral fat accumulation, which was not observed in our previous breakfast skipping or physically inactive studies. The mRNA levels of clock and lipogenesis-related genes were altered by breakfast skipping in the liver and epididymal adipose tissue, and serum insulin level was altered by breakfast skipping. These results suggest that physical inactivity and breakfast skipping synergistically induces drastic visceral fat accumulation due to the alteration of circadian clock and lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue. Therefore, regular feeding timing plays an important role in the health of a sedentary modern society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the aging of the population worldwide, extending healthy life expectancy is an urgent issue. Muscle mass has been reported to be associated with physical independence and longevity. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of food intake in urban community-dwelling older adults with low muscle mass. METHODS This cross-sectional study used baseline data from the Bunkyo Health Study, which included 1618 urban community-dwelling older adults aged 65-84 years. All participants underwent measurement of body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis and evaluation of nutrient and food intake using the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. Participants were stratified by sex and divided into robust or low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) groups according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria to compare differences in nutrient and food intake. RESULTS The mean age and body mass index were 73.1 ± 5.4 years and 22.6 ± 3.1 kg/m2, respectively. The prevalence of low SMI was 31.1% in men and 43.3% in women. In men, all food intake, including total energy intake, was similar between the low SMI group and the robust group. In women, the low SMI group had less total energy intake, and consumed lower amounts of energy-producing nutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates), but there were only small differences in the intake of specific foods. CONCLUSIONS There were sex differences in food intake characteristics between urban community-dwelling older adults with low SMI and those who were robust. Advising women to increase their energy intake may be important in preventing muscle loss, and further research is needed in men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although experimental research supports that resistance training (RT), especially with greater dietary protein intake, improves muscle mass and strength in older adults, comparable research on tendons is needed. OBJECTIVES We assessed the effects of a protein-rich diet emphasizing lean beef, compared with 2 control diets, on RT-induced changes in skeletal muscle and tendon size and strength in older women. METHODS We randomly assigned women [age: 66 ± 1 y, body mass index (BMI): 28 ± 1] to groups that consumed 1) 0.8 g total protein/kg body weight/day from mixed food sources (normal protein control, n = 16); 2) 1.4 g/kg/d protein from mixed food sources (high protein control, n = 17); or 3) 1.4 g/kg/d protein emphasizing unprocessed lean beef (high protein experimental group, n = 16). Participants were provided with all foods and performed RT 3 times/wk, 70% of 1-repetition maximum for 12 wk. We measured quadriceps muscle volume via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We estimated patellar tendon biomechanical properties and cross-sectional area (CSA) using ultrasound and MRI. RESULTS Dietary intake did not influence RT-induced increases in quadriceps strength (P < 0.0001) or muscle volume (P < 0.05). We noted a trend for an RT effect on mean tendon CSA (P = 0.07), with no differences among diets (P > 0.05). Proximal tendon CSA increased with RT (P < 0.05) with no difference between dietary groups (P > 0.05). Among all participants, midtendon CSA increased with RT (P ≤ 0.05). We found a decrease in distal CSA in the 0.8 g group (P < 0.05) but no change in the 1.4 g group (P > 0.05). Patellar tendon MRI signal or biomechanical properties were unchanged. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that greater daily protein intake, emphasizing beef, did not influence RT-induced changes in quadriceps muscle strength or muscle volume of older women. Although we noted trends in tendon CSA, we did not find a statistically significant impact of greater daily protein intake from beef on tendon outcomes. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04347447.

Abstract
A decline in function and loss of mass, a condition known as sarcopenia, is observed in the skeletal muscles with aging. Sarcopenia has a negative effect on the quality of life of elderly. Individuals with sarcopenia are at particular risk for adverse outcomes, such as reduced mobility, fall-related injuries, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although the pathogenesis of sarcopenia is multifaceted, mitochondrial dysfunction is regarded as a major contributor for muscle aging. Hence, the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies to improve mitochondrial function during aging is imperative for sarcopenia treatment. However, effective and specific drugs that can be used for the treatment are not yet approved. Instead studies on the relationship between food intake and muscle aging have suggested that nutritional intake or dietary control could be an alternative approach for the amelioration of muscle aging. This narrative review approaches various nutritional components and diets as a treatment for sarcopenia by modulating mitochondrial homeostasis and improving mitochondria. Age-related changes in mitochondrial function and the molecular mechanisms that help improve mitochondrial homeostasis are discussed, and the nutritional components and diet that modulate these molecular mechanisms are addressed.

Abstract
Recent research has highlighted an important role for the molecular circadian machinery in the regulation of tissue-specific function and stress responses. Indeed, disruption of circadian function, which is pervasive in modern society, is linked to accelerated aging, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, evidence supporting the importance of the circadian clock within both the mature muscle tissue and satellite cells to regulate the maintenance of muscle mass and repair capacity in response injury has recently emerged. Here, we review the discovery of circadian clocks within the satellite cell (a.k.a. adult muscle stem cell) and how they act to regulate metabolism, epigenetics, and myogenesis during both healthy and diseased states.

Abstract
Sufficient clinical evidence suggests that the damage caused by ischemic stroke to the body occurs not only in the acute phase but also during the recovery period, and that the latter has a greater impact on the long-term prognosis of the patient. However, current stroke studies have typically focused only on lesions in the central nervous system, ignoring secondary damage caused by this disease. Such a phenomenon arises from the slow progress of pathophysiological studies examining the central nervous system. Further, the appropriate therapeutic time window and benefits of thrombolytic therapy are still controversial, leading scholars to explore more pragmatic intervention strategies. As treatment measures targeting limb symptoms can greatly improve a patient's quality of life, they have become a critical intervention strategy. As the most vital component of the limbs, skeletal muscles have become potential points of concern. Despite this, to the best of our knowledge, there are no comprehensive reviews of pathophysiological changes and potential treatments for post-stroke skeletal muscle. The current review seeks to fill a gap in the current understanding of the pathological processes and mechanisms of muscle wasting atrophy, inflammation, neuroregeneration, mitochondrial changes, and nutritional dysregulation in stroke survivors. In addition, the challenges, as well as the optional solutions for individualized rehabilitation programs for stroke patients based on motor function are discussed.

Abstract
Nobiletin (NOB), a naturally occurring small-molecule compound abundant in citrus peels, has displayed potential lipid-lowering and circadian-enhancing properties in preclinical studies. However, the requirement of specific clock genes for the beneficial effects of NOB is not well understood. In the current study, mice with a liver-specific deletion of the core clock component, Bmal1-Bmal1LKO-were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) ad libitum for eight weeks, while NOB (200 mg/kg) was administered by daily oral gavage from the fifth week and throughout the last four weeks. NOB decreased liver triglyceride (TG) alongside the decreasing mRNA levels of de novo lipogenesis (DNL) genes in both Bmal1flox/flox and Bmal1LKO mice. NOB increased serum very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels in Bmal1LKO mice, which was consistent with higher liver Shp and lower Mttp mRNA expression levels, the key genes that facilitate VLDL assembly and secretion. NOB decreased liver and serum cholesterol levels in the Bmal1flox/flox mice, consistent with lower Hmgcr and higher Cyp7a1, Cyp8b1, Gata4 and Abcg5 mRNA levels in the liver. In contrast, in the Bmal1LKO mice, NOB increased Hmgcr mRNA levels and had no effect on the above-mentioned genes related to bile acid synthesis and cholesterol excretion, which might contribute to the elevation of liver and serum cholesterol levels in NOB-treated Bmal1LKO mice. NOB inhibited hepatic DNL and decreased liver TG levels in HFD-fed mice independently of liver Bmal1, whereas liver-specific Bmal1 depletion reversed the beneficial effects of NOB on liver cholesterol homeostasis. The complex interactions between NOB, the circadian clock and lipid metabolism in the liver warrant further research.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the serum metabolites associated with sarcopenic risk in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes, determine the effect of dietary protein intake on the serum metabolic profile, and examine its association with sarcopenia. Ninety-nine Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes were included, and sarcopenic risk was defined as low muscle mass or strength. Seventeen serum metabolites were quantified after gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The relationship between dietary protein intake and the metabolites concerning sarcopenia was analyzed, and the factors affecting sarcopenic risk were clarified. Twenty-seven patients were classified as being at risk of sarcopenia, the same as the general risk, which was associated with older age, a longer duration of the disease, and a lower body mass index. Low levels of leucine and glutamic acid were significantly associated with low muscle strength (p = 0.002 and p < 0.001, respectively), and leucine was also associated with muscle mass (p = 0.001). Lower levels of glutamic acid had higher odds of sarcopenic risk after being adjusted for age and HbA1c (adjusted OR 4.27, 95% CI 1.07-17.11, p = 0.041), but not for leucine. Leucine and glutamic acid can serve as useful biomarkers for sarcopenia, highlighting potential targets for its prevention.

Abstract
Diabetes prevalence is increasing rapidly in older people, and sarcopenia is prevalent as a novel complication, particularly in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Therefore, sarcopenia prevention and treatment in these people is necessary. Diabetes accelerates sarcopenia through several mechanisms, such as hyperglycemia, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. The effects of diet, exercise, and pharmacotherapy on sarcopenia in patients with T2DM need to be considered. In diet, low intake of energy, protein, vitamin D, and ω-3 fatty acid are associated with sarcopenia risk. In exercises, although intervention studies in people, especially older and non-obese patients with diabetes, are few, accumulating evidence shows the usefulness of exercise, particularly resistance exercise for muscle mass and strength, and aerobic exercise for physical performance in sarcopenia. In pharmacotherapy, certain classes of anti-diabetes compounds have possibility of preventing sarcopenia. However, much data on diet, exercise, and pharmacotherapy were obtained in obese and non-elderly patients with T2DM, demanding actual clinical data on non-obese and older patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Chronotype (morningness-eveningness) and social jetlag (SJL; discrepancy in the sleep pattern between the weekday and weekend) are related to eating behavior and health. The association between sleep behavior and the daily macro- and micronutrient eating pattern of each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) have not been discussed well and need more evidence. Here, meal pattern datasets of Japanese participants aged 20-59 years were obtained as averages over 1 month from the data stored in the food-logging app "Asken". We allocated three groups for each chronotype and SJL. Multiple regression analyses revealed that morning chronotype and small SJL were associated with higher total daily intake of potassium, fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin K. Breakfast energy intake and consumption of nutrients, including protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and minerals, were higher in the morning chronotype or small SJL. Lunch intake of potassium, cholesterol, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin K was also higher in the morning chronotype or small SJL. Dinner energy intake and nutrient intake of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, sodium, and saturated fatty acids were lower in the morning chronotype or small SJL. The current data would help to establish a detailed reference for dietary intake which considers eating patterns over a day.

Abstract
The trend of fasting until noon (omission or delayed breakfast) is increasingly prevalent in modern society. This eating pattern triggers discordance between endogenous circadian clock rhythms and the feeding/fasting cycle and is associated with an increased incidence of obesity and T2D. Although the underlying mechanism of this association is not well understood, growing evidence suggests that fasting until noon, also known as an "extended postabsorptive state", has the potential to cause a deleterious effect on clock gene expression and to disrupt regulation of body weight, postprandial and overall glycemia, skeletal muscle protein synthesis, and appetite, and may also lead to lower energy expenditure. This manuscript overviews the clock gene-controlled glucose metabolism during the active and resting phases and the consequences of postponing until noon the transition from postabsorptive to fed state on glucose metabolism, weight control, and energy expenditure. Finally, we will discuss the metabolic advantages of shifting more energy, carbohydrates (CH), and proteins to the early hours of the day.

Abstract
This study aimed to review the current evidence on the independent and combined effects of diet and exercise and their impact on skeletal muscle mass in the elderly population. Skeletal muscle makes up approximately 40% of total body weight and is essential for performing daily activities. The combination of exercise and diet is known to be a potent anabolic stimulus through stimulation of muscle protein synthesis from amino acids. Aging is strongly associated with a generalized deterioration of physiological function, including a progressive reduction in skeletal muscle mass and strength, which in turn leads to a gradual functional impairment and an increased rate of disability resulting in falls, frailty, or even death. The term sarcopenia, which is an age-related syndrome, is primarily used to describe the gradual and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass (mainly in type II muscle fibers) and function. Multimodal training is emerging as a popular training method that combines a wide range of physical dimensions. On the other hand, nutrition and especially protein intake provide amino acids, which are essential for muscle protein synthesis. According to ESPEN, protein intake in older people should be at least 1 g/kgbw/day. Essential amino acids, such as leucine, arginine, cysteine, and glutamine, are of particular importance for the regulation of muscle protein synthesis. For instance, a leucine intake of 3 g administered alongside each main meal has been suggested to prevent muscle loss in the elderly. In addition, studies have shown that vitamin D and other micronutrients can have a protective role and may modulate muscle growth; nevertheless, further research is needed to validate these claims. Resistance-based exercise combined with a higher intake of dietary protein, amino acids, and/or vitamin D are currently recognized as the most effective interventions to promote skeletal muscle growth. However, the results are quite controversial and contradictory, which could be explained by the high heterogeneity among studies. It is therefore necessary to further assess the impact of each individual exercise and nutritional approach, particularly protein and amino acids, on human muscle turnover so that more efficient strategies can be implemented for the augmentation of muscle mass in the elderly.

Abstract
The nutritional and palatability relevance of bread prepared with soy flour was examined. There are a few effective nutritional measures that combine palatability, convenience, and functionality in the suppression of muscle loss (contributing to the improvement and prevention of sarcopenia). Therefore, in the present study, we attempted to produce bread using soybeans, which are rich in amino acids involved in the synthesis and degradation of skeletal muscle proteins. Rice flour was also used to avoid gluten intolerance. The bread was baked in an automatic bread maker, and the rheological properties of its breadcrumbs were determined using a creep meter. We found that a 70 g slice of soy bread satisfied approximately one-fifth of the daily nutritional requirement for leucine. Although soy decreased the specific volume of bread by preventing starch construction, the use of preprocessed rice flour recovered the volume, and corn starch improved the taste. We propose that the addition of soy bread to the daily diet may be an effective protein source.

Abstract
Background: The recommended protein intake for the elderly is 25–30 g at main meals, with at least 2500–2800 mg of leucine at each meal. There is still little evidence regarding the amount and distribution of protein and leucine intake with meals in the elderly with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated protein and leucine intake at each meal in elderly patients with T2D. Methods: A total of 138 patients (91 men and 47 women) with T2D, aged 65 years or older, were included. Participants performed three 24-h dietary recalls for the evaluation of their dietary habits and protein and leucine intake at meals. Results: The average protein intake was 0.9 ± 0.2 g/kg body weight/day, and only 23% of patients complied with the recommendations. The average protein intake was 6.9 g at breakfast, 29 g at lunch, and 21 g at dinner. None of the patients reached the recommended protein intake at breakfast; 59% of patients complied with the recommendations at lunch; and 32% at dinner. The average leucine intake was 579 mg at breakfast, 2195 g at lunch, and 1583 mg at dinner. The recommended leucine intake was not reached by any patient at breakfast, by 29% of patients at lunch, and by 13% at dinner. Conclusions: Our data show that, in elderly patients with T2D, the average protein intake is low, particularly at breakfast and dinner, and that leucine intake is remarkably lower than the recommended levels. These data raise the need to implement nutritional strategies capable of increasing protein and leucine intake in the elderly with T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study was conducted to explore the association between protein intake across the main meals and hypertension (HTN)-related parameters in community-dwelling Brazilian older adults. METHODS Brazilian community-dwelling older adults were recruited in a senior center. Dietary habits were assessed through 24 h recall. Protein intake was classified as high and low according to median and recommended dietary allowance values. Absolute and body weight (BW)-adjusted protein consumption levels were quantified and analyzed according to ingestion across the main meals. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured using an oscilometric monitor. Participants were categorized as hypertensive according to physician diagnosis or the detection of high SBP and/or DBP values. RESULTS One hundred ninety-seven older adults were enrolled in the present study. Protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with SBP. Furthermore, a lower prevalence of HTN (diagnosed by a physician) was observed in participants with higher intakes of protein. These results remained significant after adjustment for many covariates. However, significance was lost when kilocalories and micronutrients were included in the model. CONCLUSIONS Findings of the present study indicate that protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with systolic BP in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Previously we had demonstrated the development and feasibility of an integrated chrono-nutrition weight reduction program among non-shift workers with morning and evening chronotypes. In this current paper, we described the association between the changes in chrono-nutrition practice and weight loss outcomes upon completing the weight reduction program. A total of 91 overweight/obese non-shift workers participated in the 12-week integrated chrono-nutrition weight reduction program (Age: 39.6 ± 6.3 y; 74.7% women; BMI: 31.2 ± 4.5 kg/m2). All the assessments including anthropometry, dietary, sleep habits, physical activity, and process of change were measured during pre- and post-intervention. Participants who had lost ≥3% of their body weight were categorized as satisfactory weight loss outcome, and those who did not achieve 3% weight loss were categorized as unsatisfactory weight loss. The satisfactory weight loss had greater daily percent energy intake during earlier in the day from protein (Mean difference (MD): +3.2%, 95% CI: 1.6, 4.9, p < .001) and smaller intake from fat during later in the day (MD: -2.6%, 95% CI: -5.1, -0.1, p = .045), earlier last mealtime (MD: -49.5 min, 95% CI: -86.5, -12.6, p = .009) and midpoint of eating (MD: -27.3 min, 95% CI: -46.3, -8.2, p = .006), shorter eating window (-0.8 h, 95% CI: -1.4, -0.1, p = .031) and greater reduction in night eating syndrome score (MD: -2.4, 95% CI: -4.3, -0.5, p = .015) compared to unsatisfactory weight loss outcome. After accounting for potential confounders, the temporal pattern of energy, protein, and fat intake were associated with greater odds of achieving a satisfactory weight loss. The findings suggest a promising role of chrono-nutrition as one of the strategies in weight reduction intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relationships between protein intake from various food sources and cardiometabolic risk markers in Italian older adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Unconventional settings across Italy (e.g., exhibitions, health promotion campaigns). PARTICIPANTS People 65+ years who provided a written informed consent. MEASUREMENTS Blood pressure (BP), blood glucose, total blood cholesterol, and anthropometric indices were assessed. Daily protein intake was estimated for 12 food items listed in a food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS Three-thousand four-hundred twenty-four older adults (mean age: 72.7 ± 5.7 years; 55% women) were included in the study. Results of linear regression analysis indicated that protein intake from several food sources was negatively associated with BP, waist and hip circumferences, and waist-to-hip ratio in both sexes. Blood glucose levels were inversely associated with many protein sources in women. Positive associations were observed between some protein sources and total blood cholesterol in both men and women. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that dietary protein is differentially associated with cardiometabolic risk factors depending on sex and food sources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diet may influence biochemical pathways involved in age-related changes in body composition and physical function. This study aimed to describe dietary patterns and their relationships with body composition, physical performance, and grip strength according to age and sex. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Data were collected in the Clinical Research Center (CRC) of the Gérontopôle of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) of Toulouse or at participants' homes when unable to attend the research facilities. PARTICIPANTS 470 (63% female) people with a median age of 56 (38 - 70) years. MEASUREMENTS The "Mediterranean-like" (i.e., plant-based foods, dairy), "Animal products" (i.e., meat, processed meat, butter, refined starch), and "Sugar and fast food" (i.e., ultra-processed and sugary foods) dietary patterns were extracted by principal component analysis. Total and trunk fat mass indexes (kg/m²), and total and appendicular lean mass indexes (kg/m²) were assessed by DXA. The physical tests comprised gait speed (m/sec), chair rise (sec), the Short Physical Performance Battery test (/12 points), and handgrip strength (kg). The associations were explored through multivariate linear regressions by sex and age groups: ≥20 to <50, ≥50 to <65, and ≥65 years. RESULTS Men and women had higher adherence to the "Sugar and fast food" diet in the youngest group. Middle-aged and older women adhered more to a "Mediterranean-like" diet. Men kept a "Sugar and fast food" diet when middle-aged and changed to the "Animal products" diet when ≥65 years. Higher adherence to the "Mediterranean-like" diet was associated with lower BMI, body fat, and lean mass in middle-aged men. Higher adherence to the "Animal products" diet was associated with higher lean mass in middle-aged women, more trunk fat in young men, lower strength in middle-aged men, and higher strength in older men. Higher adherence to the "Sugar and fast food" diet was associated with higher body fat in middle-aged men but lower body fat in older men. CONCLUSION Diets composed of sugary foods, fast foods, and processed meat were associated with higher fat mass and lower strength. Men were more prone to have less healthy food intake in all age groups.

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide, and obesity can cause type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Intake of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) containing medium-chain fatty acids reduces body fat and insulin resistance in rodents and humans. This study aimed to determine how the timing of MCT consumption affects obesity and metabolic dysfunction induced in mice by a high-fat high-sucrose diet (HFHSD). Mice received an HFHSD with or without MCT (M-HFHSD) during either the active or rest phase for 9 weeks. Significant reduction in body weight, white adipose tissue (WAT) weight, and adipocyte size in epididymal WAT (eWAT) and improved insulin sensitivity in mice fed with M-HFHSD during the active but not the rest phase were observed. The consumption of M-HFHSD during both active and rest phases increased glucose tolerance. Phosphorylated Akt was more abundant in the gastrocnemius muscles and eWAT of M-HFHSD-fed mice than in those fed HFHSD during the active phase. The mRNA and protein expression of lipogenic genes increased in the eWAT of mice fed M-HFHSD compared with those fed HFHSD. Feeding with M-HFHSD during the active phase significantly increased the abundance of phosphorylated Ser563 and 660 of hormone-sensitive lipase and its upstream protein kinase A in eWAT. These results indicated that the timing of consumption modulates the effects of MCT on eWAT hypertrophy and glucose and lipid metabolism in mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Branched chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolic defects are implicated to be causal determinates of multiple diseases. This work aimed to better understand how enhancing BCAA catabolism affected metabolic homeostasis as well as the mechanisms underlying these improvements. METHODS The rate limiting step of BCAA catabolism is the irreversible decarboxylation by the branched chain ketoacid dehydrogenase (BCKDH) enzyme complex, which is post-translationally controlled through phosphorylation by BCKDH kinase (BDK). This study utilized BT2, a small molecule allosteric inhibitor of BDK, in multiple mouse models of metabolic dysfunction and NAFLD including the high fat diet (HFD) model with acute and chronic treatment paradigms, the choline deficient and methionine minimal high fat diet (CDAHFD) model, and the low-density lipoprotein receptor null mouse model (Ldlr-/-). shRNA was additionally used to knock down BDK in liver to elucidate liver-specific effects of BDK inhibition in HFD-fed mice. RESULTS A rapid improvement in insulin sensitivity was observed in HFD-fed and lean mice after BT2 treatment. Resistance to steatosis was assessed in HFD-fed mice, CDAHFD-fed mice, and Ldlr-/- mice. In all cases, BT2 treatment reduced steatosis and/or inflammation. Fasting and refeeding demonstrated a lack of response to feeding-induced changes in plasma metabolites including insulin and beta-hydroxybutyrate and hepatic gene changes in BT2-treated mice. Mechanistically, BT2 treatment acutely altered the expression of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation and lipogenesis in liver, and upstream regulator analysis suggested that BT2 treatment activated PPARα. However, BT2 did not directly activate PPARα in vitro. Conversely, shRNA-AAV-mediated knockdown of BDK specifically in liver in vivo did not demonstrate any effects on glycemia, steatosis, or PPARα-mediated gene expression in mice. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that BT2 treatment acutely improves metabolism and liver steatosis in multiple mouse models. While many molecular changes occur in liver in BT2-treated mice, these changes were not observed in mice with AAV-mediated shRNA knockdown of BDK. All together, these data suggest that systemic BDK inhibition is required to improve metabolism and steatosis by prolonging a fasting signature in a paracrine manner. Therefore, BCAA may act as a "fed signal" to promote nutrient storage and reduced systemic BCAA levels as shown in this study via BDK inhibition may act as a "fasting signal" to prolong the catabolic state.

Abstract
Nutriments have been deemed to impact all physiopathologic processes. Recent evidences in molecular medicine and clinical trials have demonstrated that adequate nutrition treatments are the golden criterion for extending healthspan and delaying ageing in various species such as yeast, drosophila, rodent, primate and human. It emerges to develop the precision-nutrition therapeutics to slow age-related biological processes and treat diverse diseases. However, the nutritive advantages frequently diversify among individuals as well as organs and tissues, which brings challenges in this field. In this review, we summarize the different forms of dietary interventions extensively prescribed for healthspan improvement and disease treatment in pre-clinical or clinical. We discuss the nutrient-mediated mechanisms including metabolic regulators, nutritive metabolism pathways, epigenetic mechanisms and circadian clocks. Comparably, we describe diet-responsive effectors by which dietary interventions influence the endocrinic, immunological, microbial and neural states responsible for improving health and preventing multiple diseases in humans. Furthermore, we expatiate diverse patterns of dietotheroapies, including different fasting, calorie-restricted diet, ketogenic diet, high-fibre diet, plants-based diet, protein restriction diet or diet with specific reduction in amino acids or microelements, potentially affecting the health and morbid states. Altogether, we emphasize the profound nutritional therapy, and highlight the crosstalk among explored mechanisms and critical factors to develop individualized therapeutic approaches and predictors.

Abstract
Modern lifestyle is generally associated with the consumption of three main meals per day, one of which is typically in the evening or at night. It is also well established that consumption of meals in the later part of the day, notably in the evenings, is associated with circadian desynchrony, which in turn increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiometabolic diseases. While it is not feasible to avoid food consumption during the evenings altogether, there is an opportunity to provide chrono-specific, diet-based solutions to mitigate some of these risks. To date, there has been substantial progress in the understanding of chrononutrition, with evidence derived mainly from in vitro and in vivo animal studies. Some of these approaches include the manipulation of the quality and quantity of certain nutrients to be consumed at specific times of the day, as well as incorporating certain dietary components (macronutrients, micronutrients, or non-nutrient bioactives, including polyphenols) with the ability to modulate circadian rhythmicity. However, robust human studies are generally lacking. In this review, the study has consolidated and critically appraised the current evidence base, with an aim to translate these findings to improve cardiometabolic health and provides recommendations to move this field forward.

Abstract
Background Protein intake plays an important role in the synthesis and maintenance of skeletal muscles for the prevention of health risks. It is also widely known that physical activity influences muscle function. However, no large-scale studies have examined the relationship between daily dietary habits, especially the timing of protein intake, and daily physical activity. Objective The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate how protein intake and composition (involving the 3 major nutrients protein, fat, and carbohydrate) in the 3 traditional meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are associated with physical activity. Methods Using daily dietary data accumulated in the smartphone food log app “Asken” and a web-based cross-sectional survey involving Asken users (N=8458), we analyzed nutrient intake and composition, as well as daily activity levels. As very few individuals skipped breakfast (1102/19,319 responses, 5.7%), we analyzed data for 3 meals per day. Results Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed that breakfast and lunch protein intakes had higher positive correlations with daily physical activity among the 3 major macronutrients (P<.001). These findings were confirmed by multivariate logistic regression analysis with confounding factors. Moreover, participants with higher protein intake and composition at breakfast or lunch tended to exhibit significantly greater physical activity than those with higher protein intake at dinner (P<.001). Conclusions Among the 3 macronutrients, protein intake during breakfast and lunch was closely associated with daily physical activity.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and one of the most significant risk factors for CVDs is high blood pressure. Blood pressure is associated with various nutrients, such as sodium, potassium, and cholesterol. However, research focusing on the timing of intake of these nutrients and blood pressure has not been conducted. In this study, we used dietary data and a questionnaire asking about the sleep, physical activity, and blood pressure, collected from the food-log app “Asken” (total N = 2,402), to investigate the relationship between the dietary data of nutrient intake in the breakfast, lunch, and dinner and blood pressure. Daily total intake of various nutrients such as sodium, sodium-to-potassium ratio, total energy, lipid, carbohydrate, and saturated fat showed a significant association with blood pressure depending on the meal timing. From multiple regression analysis, eliminating the confounding factors, lunch sodium-to-potassium ratio, dinner energy, lipid, cholesterol, saturated fat, and alcohol intake were positively associated with blood pressure, whereas breakfast protein and lunch fiber intake showed a negative association with blood pressure. Our results suggest that nutrient intake timing is also an important factor in the prevention of high blood pressure. Our study provides possibilities to prevent hypertension by changing the timing of nutrient intake, especially sodium, together with potassium and lipids. However, because our research was limited to food-log app users, broader research regarding the general population needs to be conducted.

Abstract
For design of healthy and sustainable diets and food systems, it is important to consider not only the quantity but also the quality of nutrients. This is particularly important for proteins, given the large variability in amino acid composition and digestibility between dietary proteins. This article reviews measurements and metrics in relation to protein quality, but also their application. Protein quality methods based on concentrations and digestibility of individual amino acids are preferred, because they do not only allow ranking of proteins, but also assessment of complementarity of protein sources, although this should be considered only at a meal level and not a diet level. Measurements based on ileal digestibility are preferred over those on faecal digestibility to overcome the risk of overestimation of protein quality. Integration of protein quality on a dietary level should also be done based on measurements on an individual amino acid basis. Effects of processing, which is applied to all foods, should be considered as it can also affect protein quality through effects on digestibility and amino acid modification. Overall, protein quality data are crucial for integration into healthy and sustainable diets, but care is needed in data selection, interpretation and integration.

Abstract
Background: The effects of different intake patterns of meal protein on muscle mass have not been clarified. We cross-sectionally and longitudinally examined the effect of different timing of protein intake on sarcopenia-related factors in older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study 1 included 219 (male, n = 69, female, n = 150) elderly subjects aged ≥65 years. Subjects who consumed more protein at breakfast than at dinner were grouped into the morning group (MG, n = 76; male, n = 26; female, n = 50), and those who consumed more protein at dinner than at breakfast were grouped into the evening group (EG, n = 143; male, n = 43; female, n = 100). In cross-sectional study 2-1 (female, n = 125), the subjects were classified into four groups according to the number of meals with sufficient protein intake. In cross-sectional studies 2-2 (female, n = 125) and 2-3 (female, n = 27), the subjects were classified into eight groups and three groups according to whether they had consumed sufficient protein at three meals; sarcopenia-related factors were compared. The intervention study was a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized controlled trial that included 40 elderly women with low daily breakfast protein intake. The subjects were divided into four groups: morning protein and placebo intake groups and evening protein and placebo intake groups. Each group consumed the test food (containing 10 g milk protein) or placebo in the morning or evening for 12 weeks. Blood indices and physical function were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Comparing all subjects, MG showed significantly higher handgrip strength than did EG (P < 0.05). The higher ratio of morning protein intake relative to the total protein intake, the better the muscle mass (r = 0.452, P < 0.05) and handgrip strength (r = 0.383, P < 0.05). The intervention study showed an increase in muscle mass with the intake of milk protein in the morning rather than in the evening (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Protein intake at breakfast might have relatively stronger effects on skeletal muscle mass than at lunch and dinner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The amount of breakfast protein intake is important for maintaining muscle strength. However, the effect of breakfast protein quality (ie, bioavailability) remains unclear. We investigated the association between breakfast protein quality and the incidence of muscle weakness. DESIGN Longitudinal study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Healthy older adults age 60-83 years without stroke, arthritis, Parkinson disease, or muscle weakness at baseline (maximum follow-up period and participations were 9.2 years and 5 times, respectively). METHODS Weakness was defined by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria, using grip strength. Breakfast protein quality was evaluated using the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), where higher scores represent higher quality, calculated from 3-day dietary records. Participants were classified according to sex-stratified tertiles of breakfast PDCAAS (ie, low to high groups). The association between PDCAAS and incident weakness was analyzed using the generalized estimating equation, after adjusting for sex, age, follow-up time, grip strength, body mass index, physical activity, cognition, education, smoking, economics, medical history, lunch and dinner PDCAASs, and energy and protein intake during 3 regular meals at baseline. RESULTS Overall, 14.4% of the initial sample was excluded owing to a diagnosis of weakness-related diseases, and 58.3% (n = 701) had at least 1 follow-up measurement for inclusion in the analysis. The mean ± SD follow-up period was 6.9 ± 2.1 years; the cumulative number of participants was 3019, and 282 developed weakness. Using the low PDCAAS group as the reference, the adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) for incident weakness in the middle and high PDCAAS groups were 0.71 (0.43-1.18) and 0.50 (0.29-0.86), respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Higher breakfast protein quality was associated with a reduction in incident weakness in older adults, independent of protein intake. These findings may highlight the role of protein quality for muscle health in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Protein is a key macronutrient for preserving physical function, but the role of protein intake on functional status may differ in men and women. We sought to examine the associations of daily protein intake and distribution on functional limitations in older American men and women. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Population-based survey. PARTICIPANTS The analytic sample included 3,976 men and 4,081 women aged ≥60-years from the 2007-2016 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. MEASUREMENTS Participants reported their ability to perform basic activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, leisure and social activities, lower extremity mobility activities, and general physical tasks. Those reporting difficulty or an inability in completing such functional tasks were considered as having a functional limitation. Protein intake was determined with dietary recalls and participants revealed functional limitations. Protein recommendations of ≥0.80, ≥1.00, and ≥1.50 g/kg/day were used. Based on these cut-points, we also investigated distribution of protein across 4 eating occasions at ≥0.20, ≥0.25, and ≥0.38 g/kg/meal, respectively. RESULTS Older women meeting each recommendation had decreased odds for functional limitations: 0.55 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.40-0.75) for ≥0.80 g/kg/day, 0.75 (CI: 0.58-0.97) for ≥1.00 g/kg/day, and 0.72 (CI: 0.55-0.94) for ≥1.5 g/kg/day. No significant associations were observed in older men. Further, older women with protein consumption ≥0.20 g/kg/meal had decreased odds for functional limitations: 0.24 (CI: 0.10-0.61) for 1 occasion, 0.20 (CI: 0.08-0.49) for 2 occasions, 0.16 (CI: 0.07-0.40) for 3 occasions, and 0.12 (CI: 0.04-0.32) for 4 occasions. A similar trend was observed for intake ≥0.25 g/kg/meal: 0.31 (CI: 0.16-0.62) for 2 occasions, 0.30 (CI: 0.14-0.61) for 3 occasions, and 0.31 (CI: 0.12-0.78) for 4 occasions. Women with 1 and 2 eating occasions at ≥0.38 g/kg/meal of protein had 0.66 (CI: 0.48-0.91) and 0.54 (CI: 0.37-0.79) decreased odds for functional limitations, respectively. CONCLUSION Trials that are powered to detect the effects of protein on functional status in women will help to establish causality.
