Spatial and temporal variability of ²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) at the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea

Radiological hazard assessment of 210Po in freshwater mussels (Sinanodonta jourdyi) and golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) in Vietnam

210Po is a significant source of ionizing radiation that people are exposed to through food globally. This paper presents the wide range of accumulation level of 210Po in the organs of two species of shellfish including freshwater mussel (Sinanodonta jourdyi) and golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata), common freshwater species in Vietnam. There was a significant correlation between 210Po activity in muscle to their mass and size of freshwater mussels. In contrast, there was no relation between other organs of both species with their mass and size. The annual effective dose due to consumption of freshwater mussels ranged from 68.7 to 291 μSv year-1 with a mean value of 138 μSv year-1 for muscle and from 321 to 4560 μSv year-1 with a mean value of 1422 μSv year-1 for the hepatopancreas. Meanwhile, the AED for golden apple snail was recorded to be higher with values ranging from 105 to 2189 μSv year-1 with mean value of 673 μSv year-1 for muscle and from 468 to 4155 μSv year-1 with a mean value of 2332 μSv year-1 for hepatopancreas. Thus, the consumption of these two types of shellfish is considered relatively safe, but the hepatopancreas gland must be removed before processing.

A review of natural and anthropogenic radionuclide pollution in marine bivalves

Radionuclide contamination in food is a public health issue. Bivalves are known to accumulate relatively high levels of radionuclides. Despite many relevant reports, this information is poorly organized. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a comprehensive scientific review of radionuclides in marine bivalves. In general, the accumulation of radionuclides in bivalves is highly species and tissue-specific, which may be due to the different biological half-life of radionuclides in different species and tissues. The trophic pathway is the main pathway for the accumulation of most radionuclides in bivalves, with polonium-210 (210Po) and lead-210 (210Pb) potentially selectively accumulating in the digestive glands, while 134Cs and 137Cs selectively accumulating in the adductor muscle and mantle. Some other radionuclides (radium-226 (226Ra) and strontium-90 (90Sr)) are absorbed along with other minerals (e.g. Calcium) and selectively accumulate in bivalve shells. The information in this study can provide an overview of radionuclide contamination in marine bivalves.

Effect of Radionuclides and Trace Elements on Antioxidant System of Brown Seaweeds

Ecological effects in marine living can be understood via the determination of antioxidant molecules in aquatic organisms against pollutants. This study aims to evaluate the radionuclides and trace element stress with response molecules. Cystoseira crinita and Halopteris scoparia have been chosen as study materials because of their susceptibility to pollution. The radionuclides ²¹⁰Po, ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K and trace elements Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Zn and Pb levels were analysed as well as antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes in two brown algae, seasonally. Marine pollutants in terms of radionuclides and trace elements were correlated with antioxidant molecules in these species and may be used as biomarkers for assessing the radioactive stress. The ²¹⁰Po and Mn concentrations in C. crinita seem to activate catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities while ²¹⁰Po concentrations inclined the proline amount in H. scoparia. This study demonstrated the radiation stress-induced the antioxidant defence system in macroalgae, the primary producers of the marine environment.

Current understanding and research needs for ecological risk assessments of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in subsea oil and gas pipelines

Thousands of offshore oil and gas facilities are coming to the end of their life in jurisdictions worldwide and will require decommissioning. In-situ decommissioning, where the subsea components of that infrastructure are left in the marine environment following the end of its productive life, has been proposed as an option that delivers net benefits, including from: ecological benefits from the establishment of artificial reefs, economic benefits from associated fisheries, reduced costs and improved human safety outcomes for operators. However, potential negative impacts, such as the ecological risk of residual contaminants, are not well understood. Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are a class of contaminants found in some oil and gas infrastructure (e.g. pipelines) and includes radionuclides of uranium, thorium, radium, radon, lead, and polonium. NORM are ubiquitous in oil and gas reservoirs around the world and may form contamination products including scales and sludges in subsea infrastructure due to their chemistries and the physical processes of oil and gas extraction. The risk that NORM from these sources pose to marine ecosystems is not yet understood meaning that decisions made about decommissioning may not deliver the best outcomes for environments. In this review, we consider the life of NORM-contamination products in oil and gas systems, their expected exposure pathways in the marine environment, and possible ecological impacts following release. These are accompanied by the key research priorities that need to better describe risk associated with decommissioning options.

Correlation of phytoplankton satellite observations and radiological doses in molluscs

In this work data of salinity, temperature, suspended particulate matter (SPM), chlorophyll-a, and phytoplankton concentration in the Gibraltar Strait coast, in the confluence of the Mediterranean Sean and the Atlantic Ocean, were analyzed together with ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb and ²³⁴Th activity concentration in different types of bivalve molluscs at the same time-period. The physicochemical parameters were evaluated using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) products based on satellite observations. A multivariate statistical analysis, including contrasted natural radioactivity contents, allowed the discrimination of bivalve molluscs from Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Additionally, a cluster analysis determined a highly significant negative correlation ²¹⁰Po concentration in molluscs and phytoplankton concentration suggesting that phytoplankton concentration in the water column is a determinant factor to regulate ²¹⁰Po concentration in those animals. These results introduce a useful tool to calculate the radiological doses in seafood from chlorophyll satellite image.

Removal of 209Po from aquatic environment and its equilibrium and thermodynamic parameters

In this study, removal of ²⁰⁹Po from aqueous media using a natural zeolite as an adsorbent material was investigated. The adsorption experiments were performed by batch technique. The influence of specific process parameters such as initial concentration, pH of solution, contact time and temperature was studied to predict the optimum conditions for effective removing of ²¹⁰Po. Initial and equilibrium activity concentration of ²⁰⁹Po in solutions was counted by a ZnS(Ag) alpha scintillation counter. Adsorption yield of ²⁰⁹Po onto the zeolite was determined as 90 ± 2% at pH: <3 and 25 °C for 40 min of contact time. The applications of the isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms were studied to evaluate adsorption characteristics of ²⁰⁹Po onto natural zeolite. Results indicated that the Dubinin-Radushkevich and Freundlich models gave a better fit to the experimental data than Langmuir isotherm models. The thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) of adsorption process were calculated. The change in entropy (ΔS^o) and enthalpy (ΔH^o) were estimated to be -0.0003 J nmol^-1 K^-1 and 0.1008 kJ nmol^-1, respectively.

Activity concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb in fish and mussels in İzmir, Turkey, and the related health risk assessment (dose assessment and pesticide levels) to the consumers

The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb) and residual pesticide levels were determined from the fish (red mullet, common sole, anchovy, horse mackerel, gray mullet, and sardine) and mussel samples collected in İzmir Bay seasonally from October 2012 and July 2013. The ²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb concentrations varied between 5.7 ± 4.0 Bq kg^-1 dry weight (dw) to 353.7 ± 45.0 Bq kg^-1(dw) and 0.7 ± 0.2 Bq kg^-1 (dw) to 4.3 ± 0.8 Bq kg^-1 (dw), respectively. From a public health point of view, the fish and mussel collected from the İzmir Bay are not harmful to consumers.

Spatial variability in Polonium-210 and Lead-210 activity concentration in New Zealand shellfish and dose assessment

The activity concentrations of Polonium-210 (²¹⁰Po) and Lead-210 (²¹⁰Pb) were determined in shellfish (Perna canaliculus and Paphies subtriangulata) sampled bimonthly from March 2018 to February 2019 from 14 sites around New Zealand. Activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po ranged from 4.7 ± 1.1 to 324 ± 17 Bq. kg^-1 with a mean value of 57 ± 72 Bq. kg^-1 (wet weight). The activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Pb were lower than those for ²¹⁰Po (0.1 ± 0.4 and 1.9 ± 0.4 Bq. kg^-1, with a mean value of 0.7 ± 0.4 Bq. kg^-1, wet weight). The calculated ²¹⁰Po/²¹⁰Pb activity concentration ratios were higher than unity in all samples indicating that radionuclides are not in equilibrium in shellfish and most of the ²¹⁰Po was unsupported by its grandparent ²¹⁰Pb. No significant difference was noted in ²¹⁰Po activity concentration between different seasons, species or shellfish condition index. Significant spatial variability in ²¹⁰Po activity concentration was observed with elevated ²¹⁰Po activity concentration in two sampling sites: Ninety Mile Beach (mean 257 ± 47 Bq. kg^-1) and Maunganui Bluff (mean 127 ± 22 Bq. kg^-1). Elevated ²¹⁰Po is hypothesised to be related to an increase of ²¹⁰Po accumulation through diet. Individuals who consume large quantities of shellfish (10 g per day or more) from areas affected by elevated ²¹⁰Po activity concentration may be exposed to an annual committed effective dose from ²¹⁰Po in shellfish in excess of 1 mSv.

Levels of radionuclide concentrations in benthic invertebrate species from the Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean, during 2012-2018

Baseline levels of radionuclides in the marine environment of the Balearic Islands in Western Mediterranean have not been reported in literature. Because of their ecological role and acknowledged sensitivity to pollutants, herein, the activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb, ⁹⁰Sr, and ²³⁴Th were measured in two types of benthic invertebrate species (mussels and sea urchins) sampled during 2012-2018. The activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb, and ²³⁴Th ranged from 38 ± 1 to 325 ± 11 Bq kg^-1 dry weight (d.w.), 220 ± 10 to 996 ± 46 Bq kg^-1 d.w., ND (lower than the limit of detection) to 55 ± 8 Bq kg^-1 d.w., and ND to 70 ± 15 Bq kg^-1 d.w., respectively. In all cases, no artificial ⁹⁰Sr activity was detected in the collected samples. The committed effective dose to humans was calculated to be in the range of 48-640 μSv year^-1.

Geographical origin of bivalve molluscs in coastal areas using natural radioactivity fingerprinting and multivariate statistical analyses: Andalusian coast as case of study

The presence of natural and artificial radionuclides in the marine environment produces the accumulation of radionuclides in bivalve molluscs consumed by humans, and therefore it could result in a radiological hazard. In this study, the activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb and ²³⁴Th were determined in different types of bivalve molluscs sampled during the period of May 2014-June 2015, along coastal areas from the Andalusian region (South of Spain), through alpha-particle spectrometry and low-level gamma-ray spectrometry. The activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po; ⁴⁰K; ²¹⁰Pb and ²³⁴Th varied between 40 ± 2 and 515 ± 9 Bq kg^-1 dry weight (d.w.); 121 ± 7 and 674 ± 34 Bq kg^-1 d.w.; ND (lower than limit of detection) and 73 ± 10 Bq kg^-1 d.w.; and ND and 126 ± 27 Bq kg^-1 d.w., respectively. The committed effective dose to humans was calculated to range from 41 to 479 μSv year^-1. Both activity concentrations and dose levels were comparable to previous studies from other countries. Finally, a multivariate statistical analysis of natural radioactivity content allowed the discrimination between bivalve molluscs from Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

An investigation on the seasonal variations of the biomarkers of oxidative stress response and their correlations to Polonium-210 in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and common sole (Solea solea) from İzmir Bay, Turkey

It is well known that the marine organisms are used as biological indicators for environmental pollution studies. Among these studies, the research on oxidative stress has been increasing in recent years. In this study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and fish (Solea solea) samples were collected seasonally from İnciraltı, İzmir, Turkey. This station was in an area where fishing is carried out for human consumption. The relationship between ²¹⁰Po and oxidative stress markers (lipid peroxidation (LPO), H₂O₂ and proline) was investigated in the mussel tissue (digestive gland, gills) and fish tissue (liver, gills) samples. The present study indicated that H₂O₂ accumulated with increasing ²¹⁰Po concentration in mussel samples. Statistically significant correlation were found between H₂O₂ and ²¹⁰Po and LPO and proline in mussel samples. This correlation between LPO and proline can be attributed to common environmental parameters (other than ²¹⁰Po) affecting expression of both LPO and proline levels. There was not a significant correlation between ²¹⁰Po and LPO levels. Similarly, a significant correlation was not found between ²¹⁰Po and proline.

The committed effective dose to humans was calculated to range from 39 to 477 μSv year^-1. Radioactivity and dose levels were compared with previous studies from other countries.

210Po in the marine biota of Korean coastal waters and the effective dose from seafood consumption

The activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po were determined in plankton and selected species of macroalgae, crustaceans, molluscs, and fish from Korean coastal waters to understand ²¹⁰Po distribution in these trophic levels and to assess the effective dose of ²¹⁰Po from seafood ingested by the average Korean. The activity concentration of ²¹⁰Po in macroalgae, mixed plankton, anchovy (whole body), abalone muscle, and abalone viscera was 0.97-1.43, 32-137, 59-392, 2.93 ± 0.86, and 1495 ± 484 Bq kg^-1 (w.w.), respectively. Polonium-210 concentration in the whole flesh of mussel and oyster were 47.8 ± 5.9 and 45.3 ± 7.1 Bq kg^-1 (w.w.), respectively. Polonium-210 concentration in the muscle of the five tested species of fish other than anchovy ranged from 0.51 to 5.56 Bq kg^-1 (w.w.), with the lowest amount in a demersal species. In fish, ²¹⁰Po activity concentration was as much as three orders of magnitude higher in viscera than in muscle. The average annual effective ²¹⁰Po dose per average Korean adult, who consumes 42.8 kg of seafood a year (excluding anchovy), was estimated to be 94 μSv y^-1, with 42-71% of this attributed to shellfish. Further studies are required to assess the dose of ²¹⁰Po from anchovy owing to its high activity concentration and the manner in which anchovy is consumed.

Assessment of committed effective dose due to the ingestion of (210)Po and (210)Pb in consumed Lebanese fish affected by a phosphate fertilizer plant

Ingestion of radionuclides through seafood intake is a one of the sources contributing to the internal effective dose in the human organism. In order to evaluate the internal exposure and potential risks due to (210)Po and (210)Pb associated with fish consumption, these radionuclides were measured in commonly consumed fish species from a clean area and an area subjected to the impact of a Lebanese phosphate fertilizer plant. The highest concentration of (210)Pb was 98.7 Bq/kg fresh weight while (210)Po activity concentrations varied from 3.6 Bq/kg to 140 Bq/kg. A supplementary radiation exposure was detected; the highest committed effective dose due to (210)Po and (210)Pb was found to be 1110 μSv/y and 450 μSv/y, respectively. Moreover, the average mortality and morbidity risks due to the fish consuming were estimated.

Polonium-210 and selenium in tissues and tissue extracts of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Gulf of Trieste)

Marine organisms such as mussels and fish take up polonium (Po) and selenium (Se), and distribute them into different cellular components and compartments. Due to its high radiotoxicity and possible biomagnification across the marine food chain Po-210 is potentially hazardous, while selenium is an essential trace element for humans and animals. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the presence and extractability of the elements in the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in the Gulf of Trieste. The levels of Po-210 in the samples ranged from 220 to 400 Bq kg(-1) and of Se from 2.6 to 8.2 mg kg(-1), both on a dry matter basis. Using various extraction types and conditions in water, buffer or enzymatic media, the best extractability was obtained with enzymatic extraction (Protease XIV, 1h shaking at 40 °C) and the worst by water extraction (24 h shaking at 37 °C). 90% of Po-210 and 70% of Se was extractable in the first case versus less than 10% of Po-210 and less than 40% of Se in the second. Such evident differences in extractability between the investigated elements point to different metabolic pathways of the two elements. In enzymatic extracts Se speciation revealed three Se compounds (SeCys2, SeMet, one undefined), while Po-210 levels were too low to allow any conclusions about speciation.

Polonium-210 in marine mussels (bivalve molluscs) inhabiting the southern coast of India

The present study focused on the determination of the alpha-emitter, (210)Po, in two species of marine mussels (bivalve molluscs) commonly available in the southern coastal region of India. The brown mussel, Perna indica was collected from the west coast and the green mussel, Perna viridis from the east coast. The concentration of (210)Po was related to the allometry (length of shell, wet/dry weight of shell/soft tissue) of the mussels and significant results were found. The study period focused on three seasons namely, pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon for a 1-year period (2010-2011). The results revealed higher activity levels in smaller-sized mussels compared to larger ones. Marked variation in (210)Po activity concentration was noted in the whole-body soft tissues between seasons and sampling site (p < 0.05). The dose rate assessment for mussels was performed using the ERICA Assessment tool. The chronic exposure to mussels due to (210)Po was found to be lesser than the global benchmark dose rate of 10 μGy h(-1). The effective ingestion dose to adults who intake mussels was estimated to be in the range 5.1-34.9 μSv y(-1). The measurement contributes to the furthering of knowledge of (210)Po, since no data exist in this region.

Radioactivity levels in mussels and sediments of the Golden Horn by the Bosphorus Strait, Marmara Sea

The Golden Horn is an estuary located in the center of İstanbul receiving freshwater discharges from two creeks and connecting to the Bosphorus Strait. Activity concentrations of natural and artificial radionuclides were determined in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and sediments from the Golden Horn sampled in February 2012. Mean activity concentrations of (137)Cs, (40)K, (226)Ra, (228)Ra, (210)Po and (210)Pb in the mussels were determined at 1.03±0.23, 389±41.6, 2.61±1.23, not detected (ND), 91.96±37.88 and 11.48±4.85 Bq kg(-1), respectively. In sediments, it was observed that (137)Cs, (40)K, (226)Ra, (228)Ra, (210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations in<63 μm particle fraction of sediment were generally higher than those determined in mussels. Po-210 and (210)Po/(210)Pb ratios in mussels from the Golden Horn were much lower than in mussels from other coastal regions and this was related to low plankton productivity and eutrophication of the Golden Horn.

Radioactivity concentrations in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) of Turkish Sea coast and contribution of ²¹⁰Po to the radiation dose

Radionuclides levels were determined in indigenous and transplanted mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected from Turkish marine environment. Radioactivity concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs, ⁴⁰K, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, ²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb were determined in the soft tissues of the mussel samples collected in Bosphorus Strait, Coasts of Black Sea, Marmara Sea and Aegean Sea. Mussel transplantation was carried out by using mussel cages in Levantine Sea coast since M. galloprovincialis did not naturally adapt along the coast. The average activity concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs, ⁴⁰K, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, ²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb in the coastline of Turkey were found to be 0.7±0.1, 469±24, 0.9±0.1, 1.0±0.1, 122±4 and 10.9±0.9 Bq kg⁻¹ in dry weight (dw), respectively. The average of ²¹⁰Po/²¹⁰Pb ratio was found to be ∼14. Total annual effective ²¹⁰Po dose was calculated to be in the range of 0.25-3.30 μSv due to mussel consumption. Radioactivity and dose levels were compared with those of similar studies carried out in Mediterranean countries.

Seasonal and spatial variations of 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations in Mytilus galloprovincialis from Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea

Results of 2 years monitoring of (210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations in soft tissue of the species Mytilus galloprovincialis from Croatian part of the Adriatic coast are presented. The samples were collected at thirteen coastal stations (some of which are also a part of the Mediterranean Mussel Watch Project) in spring and autumn of 2010 and 2011. The collected mussels were ranging between 4 cm and 6 cm in shell length. After sample pre-treatment lead and polonium were radiochemically separated on Sr resin. (210)Po was determined by alpha-particle spectrometry and (210)Pb was determined, via (210)Bi, by a low-level gas proportional counter. The results of (210)Po activity concentrations were found to vary between (104±11) and (1421±81) Bq kg(-1) dry weight while (210)Pb activity concentrations were much lower and in range (8.2±5.3)-(94.1±29.8) Bq kg(-1) dry weight. Higher (210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations were determined in spring period. The inter-site differences seen in their activity concentrations can be due to natural background levels of sites. The (210)Po/(210)Pb activity concentration ratios in all cases exceeded unity for all mussel samples and ranged between 4.0 and 47.9.

Levels of 210Po and 210Pb in mussel and sediments in Candarlı Gulf and the related dose assessment to the coastal population

(210)Po and (210)Pb in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and sediment samples collected at Candarlı Gulf during the period of 2010-2012 are presented and discussed. The activity concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb were measured by means of alpha spectrometry. Activity concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb in mussels are in the ranged of 332±17-776±23 Bq kg(-1)dw and 14±1-40±5 Bq kg(-1) dw, for sediments the ranges for 52±5-109±8 Bq kg(-1)dw and 38±5-92±9 Bq kg(-1) dw, respectively. The estimated consequent annual effective ingestion dose due to (210)Po and (210)Pb from mussel consumption in Candarlı Gulf coastal region were calculated. The highest dose due to (210)Po and (210)Po were calculated to be 4232±126 μSv and 126±16 μSv, respectively.

Variations of 210Po and 210Pb concentration in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Didim and Izmir Bay (Turkish coast of Aegean Sea)

In this study, the activity concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb were determined in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected from Didim and Izmir Bay (Turkish coast of Aegean Sea) during the period of April 2006-March 2007. The concentrations activity of (210)Po were determined spectroscopically through its 5.30 MeV alpha particle emission, using (209)Po as an internal tracer. The (210)Pb activity concentrations were determined from the ingrowth of (210)Po, assuming zero initial (210)Po activity. The results of (210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations were found to vary between 34 ± 9 and 1855 ± 98 Bq kg(-1) dry weight and ND (lower than limit of detection) - 64 ± 6 Bq kg(-1) dry weight, respectively. (210)Po/(210)Pb ratio ranged between 1.00 and 106.87. The highest (210)Po activities were found in mussels collected from Didim.

(210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations in Mytilus galloprovincialis from Croatian Adriatic coast with the related dose assessment to the coastal population

Activity concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb in the species Mytilus galloprovincialis from Croatian Adriatic coast were determined. The samples were collected in thirteen sampling places which are also a part of Croatian Mediterranean mussel watch project. The results of (210)Po and (210)Pb activity concentrations were found to vary between (22.1±2.5)-(207±21) Bq kg(-1) fresh weight and (2.8±1.4)-(9.3±0.7) Bq kg(-1) fresh weight, respectively. (210)Po/(210)Pb ratio ranged between 6.2 and 30.7. The highest measured activities were found in the enclosed basins of the Neretva channel, where the majority of Croatian mussel cultivation is taking place. The estimated consequent average total annual effective ingestion dose due to (210)Po and (210)Pb from mussel consumption in Croatian coastal region is 202±99 μSv with 96% contribution of (210)Po to the total effective dose.
