Insight into metal immobilization and microbial community structure in soil from a steel disposal dump phytostabilized with composted, pyrolyzed or gasified wastes

The effects of different electrode materials on the electric field-assisted co-composting system for the soil remediation of heavy metal pollution

The electric field-assisted composting system (EACS) is an emerging technology that can enhance composting efficiency, but little attention has been given to electrode materials. Herein, an EACS was established to investigate the effects of electrode materials on humic substance formation and heavy metal speciation. Excitation-emission matrix analysis showed that carbon-felt and stainless-steel electrodes increased humic acid (HA) by 48.57 % and 47.53 %, respectively. In the EACS with the carbon-felt electrode, the bioavailability factors (BF) of Cu and Cr decreased by 18.00 % and 7.61 %, respectively. Despite that the stainless-steel electrodes decreased the BF of As by 11.26 %, the leaching of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Fe from the electrode itself is an inevitable concern. Microbial community analyses indicated that the electric field increased the abundance of Actinobacteria and stimulated the multiplication of heavy metal-tolerant bacteria. Redundancy analysis indicates that OM, pH, and current significantly affect the evolution of heavy metal speciation in the EACS. This study first evaluated the metal leaching risk of stainless-steel electrode, and confirmed that carbon-felt electrode is environment-friendly material with high performance and low risk in future research with EACS.

Inhibitory effects of Pseudomonas sp. W112 on cadmium accumulation in wheat grains: Reduced the bioavailability in soil and enhanced the interception by plant organs

Microorganisms play an important role in heavy metal bioremediation and soil fertility. The effects of soil inoculation with Pseudomonas sp. W112 on Cd accumulation in wheat were investigated by analyzing the transport, subcellular distribution and speciation of Cd in the soil and plants. Pseudomonas sp. W112 application significantly decreased Cd content in the roots, internode and grains by 10.2%, 29.5% and 33.0%, respectively, and decreased Cd transfer from the basal nodes to internodes by 63.5%. Treatment with strain W112 decreased the inorganic and water-soluble Cd content in the roots and increased the proportion of residual Cd in both the roots and basal nodes. At the subcellular level, the Cd content in the root cell wall and basal node cytosol increased by 19.6% and 61.8%, respectively, indicating that strain W112 improved the ability of the root cell wall and basal node cytosol to fix Cd. In the rhizosphere soil, strain W112 effectively colonized and significantly decreased the exchangeable Cd, carbonate-bound Cd and iron-manganese oxide-bound Cd content by 43.5%, 27.3% and 17.6%, respectively, while it increased the proportion of residual Cd by up to 65.2%. Moreover, a 3.1% and 23.5% increase in the pH and inorganic nitrogen content in the rhizosphere soil, respectively, was recorded. Similarly, soil bacterial community sequencing revealed that inoculating with strain W112 increased the abundance of Pseudomonas, Thauera and Azoarcus, which are associated with inorganic nitrogen metabolism, and decreased that of Acidobacteria, which is indicative of soil alkalinization. Hence, root application of Pseudomonas sp. W112 improved soil nitrogen availability and inhibited Cd accumulation in the wheat grains in a two-stage process: by reducing the Cd availability in the rhizosphere soil and by improving Cd interception and fixation in the wheat roots and basal nodes. Pseudomonas sp. W112 may be a suitable bioremediation agent for restoring Cd-contaminated wheat fields.

Effect of freeze-thaw manipulation on phytostabilization of industrially contaminated soil with halloysite nanotubes

The latest trends in improving the performance properties of soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) relate to the possibility of using raw additives, including halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) due to eco-friendliness, and inexpensiveness. Lolium perenne L. was cultivated for 52 days in a greenhouse and then moved to a freezing-thawing chamber for 64 days. HNT addition into PTE-contaminated soil cultivated with grass under freezing-thawing conditions (FTC) was tested to demonstrate PTE immobilization during phytostabilization. The relative yields increased by 47% in HNT-enriched soil in a greenhouse, while under FTC decreased by 17% compared to the adequate greenhouse series. The higher PTE accumulation in roots in HNT presence was evident both in greenhouse and chamber conditions. (Cr/Cd and Cu)-relative contents were reduced in soil HNT-enriched-not-FTC-exposed, while (Cr and Cu) in HNT-enriched-FTC-exposed. PTE-immobilization was discernible by (Cd/Cr/Pb and Zn)-redistribution into the reducible fraction and (Cu/Ni and Zn) into the residual fraction in soil HNT-enriched-not-FTC-exposed. FTC and HNT facilitated transformation to the residual fraction mainly for Pb. Based on PTE-distribution patterns and redistribution indexes, HNT's role in increasing PTE stability in soils not-FTC-exposed is more pronounced than in FTC-exposed compared to the adequate series. Sphingomonas, Acidobacterium, and Mycobacterium appeared in all soils. HNTs mitigated FTC's negative effect on microbial diversity and increased Planctomycetia abundance.

The 'microbiome counterattack': Insights on the soil and root-associated microbiome in diverse chickpea and lentil genotypes after an erratic rainfall event

Legumes maintain soil fertility thanks to their associated microbiota but are threatened by climate change that causes soil microbial community structural and functional modifications. The core microbiome associated with different chickpea and lentil genotypes was described after an unexpected climatic event. Results showed that chickpea and lentil bulk soil microbiomes varied significantly between two sampling time points, the first immediately after the rainfall and the second 2 weeks later. Rhizobia were associated with the soil of the more productive chickpea genotypes in terms of flower and fruit number. The root-associated bacteria and fungi were surveyed in lentil genotypes, considering that several parcels showed disease symptoms. The metabarcoding analysis revealed that reads related to fungal pathogens were significantly associated with one lentil genotype. A lentil core prokaryotic community common to all genotypes was identified as well as a genotype-specific one. A higher number of specific bacterial taxa and an enhanced tolerance to fungal diseases characterized a lentil landrace compared to the commercial varieties. This outcome supported the hypothesis that locally adapted landraces might have a high recruiting efficiency of beneficial soil microbes.

Comparative assessment of bacterial diversity and composition in arsenic hyperaccumulator, Pteris vittata L. and non-accumulator, Pteris ensiformis Burm

The use of arsenic (As) for various industrial and agricultural applications has led to worldwide environmental contamination. Phytoremediation using hyperaccumulators is a sustainable soil As mitigation strategy. Microbial processes play an important role in the tolerance and uptake of trace elements such as in plants. The rhizospheric and endophytic microbial communities are responsible for accelerating the mobility of trace elements around the roots and the production of plant growth-promoting compounds and enzymes. Several studies have reported that the As hyperaccumulator, Pteris vittata L. (PV) influences the microbial community in its rhizosphere and roots. Deciphering the differences in the microbiomes of hyperaccumulators and non-accumulators is crucial in understanding the mechanism of hyperaccumulation. We hypothesized that there are significant differences in the microbiome of roots, rhizospheric soil, and bulk soil between the hyperaccumulator PV and a non-accumulator of the same genus, Pteris ensiformis Burm. (PE), and that the differential recruitment of bacterial communities provides PV with an advantage in As contaminated soil. We compared root endophytic, rhizospheric, and bulk soil microbial communities between PV and PE species grown in As-contaminated soil in a greenhouse setting. There was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the microbiome of the three compartments between the ferns. Differential abundance analysis showed 328 Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) enriched in PV compared to 172 in PE. The bulk and rhizospheric soil of both ferns were abundant in As-resistant genera. However, As-tolerant root endophytic genera were present in PV but absent in PE. Our findings show that there is a difference between the bacterial composition of an As hyperaccumulator and a non-accumulator species grown in As-contaminated soil. These differences need to be further explored to develop strategies for improving the efficiency of metal uptake in plants growing in As polluted soil.

Phytoextraction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the influence of supplements on the performance of short-rotation crops

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic compounds threatening water quality and food safety worldwide. Phytoremediation is a nature-based, cost-effective, and scalable solution with high potential for treating PFAS-contaminated sites. However, there is a large knowledge gap regarding choice of plant species and methods to enhance performance. This study assessed the PFAS phytoextraction potential of sunflower (Helianthus annuus), mustard (Brassica juncea), and industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) in a greenhouse experiment, using inorganic fertilizer and a microbial mixture as supplements. PFAS concentrations were measured using UPLC-MS/MS, and bioconcentration factors for different plant tissues and removal efficiency were determined. Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA) accumulation was 0.4-360 times higher than that of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) homologues of similar perfluorocarbon chain length. Inorganic fertilizer significantly (p < 0.001) reduced PFAS concentration in all plant tissues, whereas the microbial mixture tested did not affect PFAS concentration. PFAS uptake ranged from 0.2 to 33% per crop cycle. Overall, the potential number of crop cycles required for removal of 90% of individual PFAS ranged from six (PFPeA) to 232 (PFOA) using sunflower, 15 (PFPeA) to 466 (PFOS) using mustard and nine (PFPeA) to 420 (PFOS) using Hemp. In this study, the percentage of PFAS removal by plants was determined, and an estimation of the time required for PFAS phytoextraction was determined for the first time. This information is important for practical phytoremediation applications.

Coupling effect of DOM and microbe on arsenic speciation and bioavailability in tailings soil after the addition of different biologically stabilized sludges

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbes co-mediate the transformation of heavy metals in soil. However, few previous studies have investigated the effects of interaction between DOM and microbes on the transformation and bioavailability of heavy metals in tailings soil at the molecular level after the addition of organic wastes. This study used co-occurrence network analysis based on Fourier-transform ion cyclone resonance mass spectrometry and high-throughput sequencing to investigate the molecular mechanisms of different bio-stabilized sludge addition on arsenic fraction transformation and bioavailability in tailings soil. It was found that sludge amendments decreased the arsenic bioavailable fraction from 3.62% to 1.74% and 1.68% and promoted humification of DOM in soil. The extra inorganic salt ions introduced with sludge desorb the adsorbed As(V) into soil solution. Specifically, bio-stabilized sludge increased the contents of labile compounds that provided nutrients for microbial metabolism and shaped the microbial community composition into a more copiotrophic state, which increased the abundance of As(V)-reducing bacteria and then converted the As(V) into As(III) and precipitated as As₂S₃. This work innovatively explores the transformation mechanisms of As fractions through the perspectives of microbial community and DOM molecular characterization, providing an important basis for the remediation of As-contaminated soil using biosolids.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Activated Carbon in Minimizing the Risk of Heavy Metals Contamination in Spinach for Safe Consumption

Toxicity induced by heavy metals is a major concern in agriculture as it decreases crops' growth and yield and leads to the deterioration of food quality. Recently, activated carbon has been identified as a possible solution. It can potentially improve crop nutrition and immobilize heavy metals in soil. That is why a glasshouse trial was conducted to investigate the effects of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on spinach growth and the availability of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) in artificially contaminated soil. The soil was placed in pots and contaminated with Cd and Cr at a rate of 10 mg kg^-1. Biochar was added to the soil at concentrations of 0 (control), 0 (contaminated control), 100, 150, and 200 g, and 10-day-old nursery spinach plants were transplanted to the pots. The results showed that applying 200 g of biochar significantly increased shoot weight (235 g), soil pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter. The highest levels of Cd (27.71 mg kg^-1) and Cr (20.44 mg kg^-1) were observed in the contaminated control pots, while the lowest levels of Cd (16.80 mg kg^-1) and Cr (9.80 mg kg^-1) were found in pots treated with 200 g of biochar (2%). Similarly, the highest levels of Cd (35.80 mg kg^-1) and Cr (40.24 mg kg^-1) in the roots were found in the contaminated control pots, while the lowest levels of Cd (19.26 mg kg^-1) and Cr (21.34 mg kg^-1) were observed in pots treated with 200 g of biochar. Biochar application at a rate of 2% can immobilize Cd and Cr in the soil and improve chlorophyll contents, carotenoids, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance in spinach in Cd- and Cr-contaminated soils. Further long-term field studies will be necessary to determine the feasibility of applying biochar as an organic amendment for enhancing spinach growth and reducing Cd and Cr bioavailability in contaminated soil.

Towards further understanding the applications of endophytes: enriched source of bioactive compounds and bio factories for nanoparticles

The most significant issues that humans face today include a growing population, an altering climate, an growing reliance on pesticides, the appearance of novel infectious agents, and an accumulation of industrial waste. The production of agricultural goods has also been subject to a great number of significant shifts, often known as agricultural revolutions, which have been influenced by the progression of civilization, technology, and general human advancement. Sustainable measures that can be applied in agriculture, the environment, medicine, and industry are needed to lessen the harmful effects of the aforementioned problems. Endophytes, which might be bacterial or fungal, could be a successful solution. They protect plants and promote growth by producing phytohormones and by providing biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Endophytes produce the diverse type of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, quinones, chinones, phenolic acids etc. and are known for various therapeutic advantages such as anticancer, antitumor, antidiabetic, antifungal, antiviral, antimicrobial, antimalarial, antioxidant activity. Proteases, pectinases, amylases, cellulases, xylanases, laccases, lipases, and other types of enzymes that are vital for many different industries can also be produced by endophytes. Due to the presence of all these bioactive compounds in endophytes, they have preferred sources for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. This review aims to comprehend the contributions and uses of endophytes in agriculture, medicinal, industrial sectors and bio-nanotechnology with their mechanism of action.

Significant difference in the efficacies of silicon application regimes on cadmium species and environmental risks in rice rhizosphere

Silicon (Si) is commonly applied as base-fertilizer or foliar-topdressing to palliate the uptake-translocation-accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in rice through Si-Cd antagonism. However, little is known about the fate of Cd in rice rhizosphere soil and its eco-environmental effects under different Si treatments. Here, systematic works had been carried out to elucidate the Cd species, soil properties, and environmental risks in rice rhizosphere driven by different Si soil-fertilization regimes including CK (without Si-addition), TSi (added before transplanting stage), JSi (added at jointing stage), and TJSi (split into two equal parts, added half before transplanting and another half at jointing stage). Results showed that TJSi outperformed the rest of fertilization regimes. The solid-phase-Cd concentrations treated with TSi, TJSi and JSi were increased by 4.18%, 5.73% and 3.41%, respectively, when compared to CK. The labile Cd (F1+F2) proportion of TJSi was reduced by 16.30%, 9.30% and 6.78%, respectively, when compared to CK, TSi, and JSi. Simultaneously, the liquid-phase-Cd concentration was appreciably suppressed by TJSi throughout the rice lifecycle, while TSi mainly abated Cd dissociation during the vegetative period, and JSi attenuated it during the grain-filling stage. The mobility factor of Cd treated with TJSi was the lowest, which was significantly lower than that of TSi (9.30%) and JSi (6.78%), respectively. Similarly, the oral exposure risk of TJSi was reduced by 4.43% and 32.53%; and the food-chain exposure risk of TJSi was decreased by 13.03% and 42.78%. Additionally, TJSi was the most effective in promoting enzyme activities and nutrient content in rhizosphere soil. Overall, TJSi is more positive and sustainable than TSi and JSi in reconstructing Cd-contaminated rhizosphere environments and abating the environmental risks of Cd. Agronomic practices in Cd-contaminated paddy soils can be informed by applying Si-fertilizer separately before transplanting and at jointing stage to achieve soil welfare and food security.

Does biochar in combination with compost effectively promote phytostabilization of heavy metals in soil under different temperature regimes?

The article presents the effect of a combined amendment, i.e., biochar+compost (BC), on the process of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn immobilization in soil cultivated with L. perenne under freezing and thawing conditions (FTC). In particular, the speciation analysis of the examined elements in phytostabilized soils based on their response using the sequential extraction, and the variability of the soil microbiome using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing were systematically assessed. Metal stability in soils was evaluated by the reduced distribution index (Ir). Plants were grown in pots for 52 days under greenhouse conditions. After termination, phytostabilization was continued in a temperature chamber for 64 days to provide FTC. As a result, it was noted that biomass yield of L. perenne was promoted by BC (39 % higher than in the control pots) and reduced by FTC (45 % lower than in the BC-enriched soil not exposed to FTC). An efficacious level of phytostabilization, i.e., higher content of heavy metals in plant roots, was found in the BC-enriched soil, regardless of the changes in soil temperature conditions. BC improved soil pH before applying FTC more than after applying FTC. BC had the greatest impact on increasing Cu stability by redistributing it from the F1 and F2 fractions to the F3 and F4 fractions. For most metals, phytostabilization under FTC resulted in an increase in the proportion of the F1 fraction and a decrease in its stability. Only for Pb and Zn, FTC had greater impact on their stability than BC addition. In all soil samples, the core genera with about 2-3 % abundances were Sphingomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp. FTC favored the growth of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria in soil. Microbial taxa that coped well with FTC but only in the absence of BC were Rhodococcus, Alkanindiges sp., Flavobacterium sp., Williamsia sp. Thermomonas sp.

Photosynthetic efficiency of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings in response to Ni and Cd stress

Perennial ryegrass is a grass species used to establish lawns in urban areas where pollution is a major environmental problems. Cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) contribute significantly to these pollutants and may cause photosynthetic limitation. The main objective of this work was to perform a comprehensive analysis of photosynthetic efficiency of perennial ryegrass seedlings under Cd and Ni stress. Some of the main indices of photosynthetic efficiency (prompt and delayed chlorophyll-a fluorescence signals and modulated reflectance at 820 nm) were compared with growth parameters. Two cultivars were tested: 'Niga' and 'Nira'. A decrease in photosystem (PS) II and PSI activity was observed. This was due to an increase in nonradiative dissipation of the PSII antenna, a decrease in PSII antenna size, or a decrease in the number of photosynthetic complexes with fully closed PSII RCs. Efficiency of electron transport was decreased. The effect on the modulated reflectance signal could indicate a restriction in electron flow from PSII to PSI. The correlation between photosynthetic efficiency parameters, such as Area, Fo, Fm, and Fv, and growth parameters, confirmed that some photosynthetic efficiency parameters can be used as indicators for early detection of heavy metal effects.

Crawfish shell- and Chinese banyan branch-derived biochars reduced phytoavailability of As and Pb and altered community composition of bacteria in a contaminated arable soil

Globally, soil contamination with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) has become a severe environmental issue. Herein, a pot experiment was conducted using pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) to investigate the effects of biochars derived from crawfish (Procambarus clarkia) shells (CSB) and Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa) branches (CBB) on the phytoavailability of As and Pb, and bacterial community composition in soils. Our results showed that the application of CSB and CBB decreased the concentrations of DTPA-extractable Pb in soils ranging from 26.8 % to 28.8 %, whereas CSB increased the concentration of NH₄H₂PO₄-extractable As in soils, compared to the control. Application of both biochars reduced the uptake of As and Pb in the edible part of pak choi. In addition, application of CBB significantly (P < 0.05) increased the activities of α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and acid phosphomonoesterase by 55.0 %, 54.4 %, 195.1 %, and 76.7 %, respectively, compared to the control. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the predominant bacteria at the phyla level in both biochar-treated soils were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota. Redundancy and correlation analyses showed that the changes in bacterial community composition could be related to soil organic carbon content, As availability, and nutrient availability in soils. Overall, the Chinese banyan branch biochar was more suitable than the crawfish shell biochar as a potential amendment for the remediation of soils co-contaminated with As and Pb.

New approach strategy for heavy metals immobilization and microbiome structure long-term industrially contaminated soils

The progress of engineering technologies highly influences the development of methods that lead to the condition improvement of areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). The aided phytostabilization fits into this trend, and was used to evaluate HM-immobilization effectiveness in phytostabilized soils under variable temperatures by applying 16 freezing-thawing cycles (FTC). Diatomite amendment and Lolium perenne L., also were applied. Cd/Ni/Cu/Pb/Zn each total content in phytostabilized soils were determined, along with the verification for each metal of its distribution in four extracted fractions (F1 ÷ F4) from soils. Based on changes in HM distribution, each metal's stability was estimated. Moreover, HM accumulation in plant roots and stems and soil microbial composition were investigated. Independently of the experimental variant (no-FTC-exposure or FTC-exposure), the above-ground biomass yields in the diatomite-amended series were higher as compared to the corresponding control series. The evident changes in Pb/Zn-bioavailability were observed. The metal stability increase was mainly attributed to metal concentration decreasing in the F1 fraction and increasing in the F4 fraction, respectively. Diatomite increased Cd/Zn-stability in not-FTC-exposed-phytostabilized soils. FTC-exposure favorably influenced Pb/Zn stability. Diatomite increased soil pH values and Cd/Ni/Cu/Zn-bioaccumulation (except Pb) in roots than in stems (in both experimental variants). FTC-exposure influenced soil microbial composition, increasing bacteria abundance belonging to Actinobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Sphingobacteria. At the genus level, FTC exposure significantly increased the abundances of Limnobacter sp., Tetrasphaera sp., Flavobacterium sp., and Dyella sp. Independently of the experimental variant, Sphingomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp., which have a tolerance to HM contamination, were core bacterial groups, comprising about 6 ÷ 7% of all soil bacteria.

Bentonite as a Functional Material Enhancing Phytostabilization of Post-Industrial Contaminated Soils with Heavy Metals

Growing awareness of the risks posed by pollution of the soil environment is leading to the development of new remediation strategies. The technique of aided phytostabilization, which involves the evaluation of new heavy-metal (HM)-immobilizing amendments, together with appropriately selected plant species, is a challenge for environmental protection and remediation of the soil environment, and seems to be promising. In this study, the suitability of bentonite for the technique of aided phytostabilization of soils contaminated with high HM concentrations was determined, using a mixture of two grass species. The HM contents in the tested plants and in the soil were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The application of bentonite had a positive effect on the biomass of the tested plants, and resulted in an increase in soil pH. The concentrations of copper, nickel, cadmium, lead and chromium were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of the plants, especially when bentonite was applied to the soil. The addition of the analyzed soil additive contributed significantly to a decrease in the levels of zinc, copper, cadmium and nickel in the soil at the end of the experiment. In view of the above, it can be concluded that the use of bentonite in the aided phytostabilization of soils polluted with HMs, is appropriate.

Impact of physiochemical properties, microbes and biochar on bioavailability of toxic elements in the soil: a review

The pollution of toxic elements (TEs) in the ecosystem exhibits detrimental effects on the human health. In this paper, we debated remediation approaches for TEs polluted soils via immobilization methods employing numerous amendments with reverence to type of soil and metals, and amendment, immobilization competence, fundamental processes and field applicability. We argued the influence of pH, soil organic matter, textural properties, microbes, speciation and biochar on the bioavailability of TEs. All these properties of soil, microbes and biochar are imperative for effective and safe application of these methods in remediation of TEs contamination in the ecosystem. Further, the application of physiochemical properties, microbes and biochar as amendments has significant synergistic impacts not only on absorption of elements but also on diminution of toxic elements.

Fungal Endophytes to Combat Biotic and Abiotic Stresses for Climate-Smart and Sustainable Agriculture

The agricultural sustainability concept considers higher food production combating biotic and abiotic stresses, socio-economic well-being, and environmental conservation. On the contrary, global warming-led climatic changes have appalling consequences on agriculture, generating shifting rainfall patterns, high temperature, CO2, drought, etc., prompting abiotic stress conditions for plants. Such stresses abandon the plants to thrive, demoting food productivity and ultimately hampering food security. Though environmental issues are natural and cannot be regulated, plants can still be enabled to endure these abnormal abiotic conditions, reinforcing the stress resilience in an eco-friendly fashion by incorporating fungal endophytes. Endophytic fungi are a group of subtle, non-pathogenic microorganisms establishing a mutualistic association with diverse plant species. Their varied association with the host plant under dynamic environments boosts the endogenic tolerance mechanism of the host plant against various stresses via overall modulations of local and systemic mechanisms accompanied by higher antioxidants secretion, ample enough to scavenge Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) hence, coping over-expression of defensive redox regulatory system of host plant as an aversion to stressed condition. They are also reported to ameliorate plants toward biotic stress mitigation and elevate phytohormone levels forging them worthy enough to be used as biocontrol agents and as biofertilizers against various pathogens, promoting crop improvement and soil improvement, respectively. This review summarizes the present-day conception of the endophytic fungi, their diversity in various crops, and the molecular mechanism behind abiotic and biotic resistance prompting climate-resilient aided sustainable agriculture.

Effect of Biochar on Metal Distribution and Microbiome Dynamic of a Phytostabilized Metalloid-Contaminated Soil Following Freeze-Thaw Cycles

In the present paper the effectiveness of biochar-aided phytostabilization of metal/metalloid-contaminated soil under freezing-thawing conditions and using the metal tolerating test plant Lolium perenne L. is comprehensively studied. The vegetative experiment consisted of plants cultivated for over 52 days with no exposure to freezing-thawing in a glass greenhouse, followed by 64 days under freezing-thawing in a temperature-controlled apparatus and was carried out in initial soil derived from a post-industrial urban area, characterized by the higher total content of Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, As and Hg than the limit values included in the classification provided by the Regulation of the Polish Ministry of Environment. According to the substance priority list published by the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Agency, As, Pb, and Hg are also indicated as being among the top three most hazardous substances. The initial soil was modified by biochar obtained from willow chips. The freeze-thaw effect on the total content of metals/metalloids (metal(-loid)s) in plant materials (roots and above-ground parts) and in phytostabilized soils (non- and biochar-amended) as well as on metal(-loid) concentration distribution/redistribution between four BCR (community bureau of reference) fractions extracted from phytostabilized soils was determined. Based on metal(-loid)s redistribution in phytostabilized soils, their stability was evaluated using the reduced partition index (Ir). Special attention was paid to investigating soil microbial composition. In both cases, before and after freezing-thawing, biochar increased plant biomass, soil pH value, and metal(-loid)s accumulation in roots, and decreased metal(-loid)s accumulation in stems and total content in the soil, respectively, as compared to the corresponding non-amended series (before and after freezing-thawing, respectively). In particular, in the phytostabilized biochar-amended series after freezing-thawing, the recorded total content of Zn, Cu, Pb, and As in roots substantially increased as well as the Hg, Cu, Cr, and Zn in the soil was significantly reduced as compared to the corresponding non-amended series after freezing-thawing. Moreover, exposure to freezing-thawing itself caused redistribution of examined metal(-loid)s from mobile and/or potentially mobile into the most stable fraction, but this transformation was favored by biochar presence, especially for Cu, Pb, Cr, and Hg. While freezing-thawing greatly affected soil microbiome composition, biochar reduced the freeze-thaw adverse effect on bacterial diversity and helped preserve bacterial groups important for efficient soil nutrient conversion. In biochar-amended soil exposed to freezing-thawing, psychrotolerant and trace element-resistant genera such as Rhodococcus sp. or Williamsia sp. were most abundant.

Enhanced nitrogen removal via iron‑carbon micro-electrolysis in surface flow constructed wetlands: Selecting activated carbon or biochar?

The iron-assisted autotrophic denitrification was plagued by passivation when introduced in surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs). Iron‑carbon micro-electrolysis (Fe/C-M/E) could facilitate the transfer of electrons during the utilization of iron. In this study, iron scraps coupling with activated carbon and biochar were applied to explore the effects of carbon materials on autotrophic denitrification. The results showed that TN removal rate in the SFCW with iron scraps and activated carbon (SFCW-IAC) and the SFCW with iron scraps and biochar (SFCW-IBC) were improved by 31.61% ± 8.18% and 14.09% ± 7.15%, and N₂O fluxes were reduced to 2.73 and 3.12 mg m^-2 d^-1, respectively. The greater iron mass loss rate (0.91%) was confirmed in SFCW-IAC. Microbial community analysis reported that autotrophic denitrification and iron related genera were increased. This study proved that activated carbon was more suitable than biochar to Fe/C-M/E for denitrification enhancement and N₂O emission reduction.

Phytoremediation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contaminated soils using alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.): A comprehensive review

Soil contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is an increasing environmental problem, posing serious threats to the living organisms. Phytoremediation is a sustainable and highly accepted technology for remediation of PTE-contaminated soils. Alfalfa has been widely adopted for the phytoremediation of PTE-contaminated soils due to its large biomass productivity, high PTE tolerance, and strong capacity to take up PTEs. However, there are still no literature reviews systematically summarized the potential of alfalfa in the phytoremediation. Therefore, we review the available literatures that present its PTE uptake, phytotoxicity, tolerance mechanisms, and aided techniques improving the phytoremediation efficiency. In this review, alfalfa shows high amounts of PTEs accumulation, especially in their root tissue. Meanwhile, the inner mechanisms of PTE tolerance and accumulation in alfalfa are discussed including: (i) the activation of antioxidant enzyme system, (ii) subcellular localization, (iii) production of glutathione, phytochelatins, and proline, and (iv) regulation of gene expression. Indeed, excessive PTE can overcome the defense system, which causes oxidative damage in alfalfa plants, thereby inhibiting growth and physiological processes and weakening the ability of PTE uptake. Till now, several approaches have been developed to improve the tolerance and/or accumulation of PTE in alfalfa plants as follows: (i) selection of PTE tolerant cultivars, (ii) applying plant growth regulators, (iii) addition of chelating agents, fertilizer, and biochar materials, and (iv) inoculation of soil microbes. Finally, we indicate that the selection of PTE-tolerant cultivars along with inoculation of soil microbes may be an efficient and eco-friendly strategy of the soil PTE phytoremediation.

Variation and factors on heavy metal speciation during co-composting of rural sewage sludge and typical rural organic solid waste

In this study, a co-composting of rural organic solid waste (rural sewage sludge, kitchen waste and corn stalks) was conducted to analyze the variation of heavy metals (As, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Hg, and Zn) and their major influencing factors. During composting, significant changes were observed in the total contents of heavy metals (p < 0.01): the total concentrations of As, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn increased by 7.5%, 54.1%, 26.3%, 15.8%, and 34.2%, whereas that of Cr and Ni decreased by 71.3% and 33.4%, respectively. Heavy metals were mainly bound to the oxidizable and residual fractions. Spearman and Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that substances were significantly correlated with the changes in speciation of heavy metals, among all the factors, while pH and temperature were the dominating environmental influencing parameters. Several metal-resistant bacterial genera (Pseudomonas, Paenibacillus, Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Desulfovibrio, and Ochrobactrum, etc) were observed, with significant explanatory capacity for the changes in heavy metals. Composting showed a poor effect on heavy metal passivation, except for that of As. After composting, the heavy metal contents were consistent with the application standards. The evaluation of potential ecological risk showed a high cumulative ecological risk (336.9) of heavy metals. This study provides technical support and practical information for the disposal and safe recycling for rural organic solid waste.

Chemometric Evaluation of WWTPs’ Wastewaters and Receiving Surface Waters in Bulgaria

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) installations are designed and operated to reduce the quantity of pollutants emitted to surface waters receiving treated wastewaters. In this work, we used classical instrumental studies (to determine chemicals and parameters under obligations put with Directive 91/271/EEC), ecotoxicological tools (Sinapis alba root growth inhibition (SA-RG) and Heterocypris incongruens mortality (MORT) and growth inhibition (GRINH)) and multivariate statistical analysis to gain information on feature profiles of WWTPs’ effluents and the possible burden of surface water bodies receiving treated wastewaters in eleven locations of Bulgaria. Initial screening of results has shown that only phosphorus content exceeds the admissible level in 5 out 11 WWTP effluents, while As, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn show exceedance at several locations. The multivariate statistical analysis reveals the discriminating water quality parameters and outlines the ability of Heterocypris incongruens to evaluate the ecotoxicological potential of different groups of waters.

Toxicity of Cadmium and nickel in the context of applied activated carbon biochar for improvement in soil fertility

Toxicity induced by heavy metals deteriorates soil fertility status. It also adversely affects the growth and yield of crops. These heavy metals become part of the food chain when crops are cultivated in areas where heavy metals are beyond threshold limits. Cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) are considered the most notorious ones among different heavy metals. The high water solubility of Cd made it a potential toxin for plants and their consumers. Accumulation of Ni in plants, leaves, and fruits also deteriorates their quality and causes cancer in humans when such a Ni-contaminated diet is used regularly. Both Cd and Ni also compete with essential nutrients of plants, making the fertility status of soil poor. To overcome this problem, the use of activated carbon biochar can play a milestone role. In the recent past application of activated carbon biochar is gaining more and more attention. Biochar sorb the Cd and Ni and releases essential micronutrients that are part of its structure. Many micropores and high cation exchange capacity make it the most acceptable organic amendment to improve soil fertility and immobilize Cd and Ni. In addition to improving water and nutrients, soil better microbial proliferation enhances the soil rhizosphere ecosystem and nutrient cycling. This review has covered Cd and Ni harmful effects on crop yield and their immobilization by activated carbon biochar. The focus was made to elaborate on the positive effects of biochar on crop yield and soil health.

Co-application of nanosized halloysite and biochar as soil amendments in aided phytostabilization of metal(-oid)s-contaminated soil under different temperature conditions

The threat posed by the degradation of the soil environment by metal (-oid)s has been lead to the improvement of existing or search for new remediation methods; in this case, the application of environmentally friendly nanomaterials falls into this trend. The study applied a technique of aided phytostabilization for the immobilization of metal (-oid)s in soil with the application of nanosized halloysite and biochar (nBH), along with Lolium perenne L. Its effectiveness was assessed in terms of changing temperature conditions (16 cycles of freeze and thaw cycles, (FTC)) on the content of As, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soil, roots, and above-ground parts of the tested plant, chemical fraction distributions of metal (-oid)s and their stability (based on reduced partition index, I_r). The biomass yield in nBH-amended soil was 2-fold higher compared to control soil, but it decreased by 1.6-fold after FTC. nBH facilitated more bioaccumulation of As, Pb and Zn than Cu in plant roots, before than after FTC. nBH increased pH in phytostabilized soil, but it was not affected by changing FTC. In soil nBH-phytostabilized total concentration of metal (-oid)s significantly decreased compared to control soil, for As and Cu below permissible value, regardless of FTC. Soil amendment and changing temperature conditions affected metal (-oid)s redistribution in soil. As a result, the stability of As increased from 0.50 to 0.66, Cu from 0.49 to 0.52, Pb from 0.36 to 0.48 and Zn from 0.39 to 0.47. These findings suggest that nBH can immobilize metal (-oid)s in phytostabilized soil under changing temperature conditions.

Biochar-Assisted Phytostabilization for Potentially Toxic Element Immobilization

In response to the growing threat to the quality of the soil environment, new technologies are being developed to protect and remediate contaminated sites. A new approach, namely, assisted phytostabilization, has been used in areas contaminated with high levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), using various soil additives. This paper determined the effectiveness of biochar-assisted phytostabilization using Dactylis glomerata L. of soil contaminated with high concentrations of the selected PTEs (in mg/kg soil): Cu (780 ± 144), Cd (25.9 ± 2.5), Pb (13,540 ± 669) and Zn (8433 ± 1376). The content of the selected PTEs in the roots and above-ground parts of the tested grass, and in the soil, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The addition of biochar to the contaminated soil led to an increase in plant biomass and caused an increase in soil pH values. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of Dactylis glomerata L. The application of biochar significantly reduced the total content of PTEs in the soil after finishing the phytostabilization experiment, as well as reducing the content of bioavailable forms extracted from the soil using CaCl2 solution, which was clearly visible with respect to Cd and Pb. It is concluded that the use of biochar in supporting the processes of assisted phytostabilization of soils contaminated with PTEs is justified.

Remediation of Smelter Contaminated Soil by Sequential Washing Using Biosurfactants

This paper presents experimental results from the use of biosurfactants in the remediation of a soil from a smelter in Poland. In the soil, concentrations of Cu (1659.1 mg/kg) and Pb (290.8 mg/kg) exceeded the limit values. Triple batch washing was tested as a soil treatment. Three main variants were used, each starting with a different plant-derived (saponin, S; tannic acid, T) or microbial (rhamnolipids, R) biosurfactant solution in the first washing, followed by 9 different sequences using combinations of the tested biosurfactants (27 in total). The efficiency of the washing was determined based on the concentration of metal removed after each washing (C_R), the cumulative removal efficiency (E_cumulative) and metal stability (calculated as the reduced partition index, I_r, based on the metal fractions from BCR sequential extraction). The type of biosurfactant sequence influenced the C_R values. The variants that began with S and R had the highest average E_cumulative for Cu and Pb, respectively. The E_cumulative value correlated very strongly (r > 0.8) with the stability of the residual metals in the soil. The average E_cumulative and stability of Cu were the highest, 87.4% and 0.40, respectively, with the S-S-S, S-S-T, S-S-R and S-R-T sequences. Lead removal and stability were the highest, 64-73% and 0.36-0.41, respectively, with the R-R-R, R-R-S, R-S-R and R-S-S sequences. Although the loss of biosurfactants was below 10% after each washing, sequential washing with biosurfactants enriched the soil with external organic carbon by an average of 27-fold (S-first variant), 24-fold (R first) or 19-fold (T first). With regard to environmental limit values, metal stability and organic carbon resources, sequential washing with different biosurfactants is a beneficial strategy for the remediation of smelter-contaminated soil with given properties.

Recent Progress and Prospects in Catalytic Water Treatment

Presently, conventional technologies in water treatment are not efficient enough to completely mineralize refractory water contaminants. In this context, the implementation of catalytic processes could be an alternative. Despite the advantages provided in terms of kinetics of transformation, selectivity, and energy saving, numerous attempts have not yet led to implementation at an industrial scale. This review examines investigations at different scales for which controversies and limitations must be solved to bridge the gap between fundamentals and practical developments. Particular attention has been paid to the development of solar-driven catalytic technologies and some other emerging processes, such as microwave assisted catalysis, plasma-catalytic processes, or biocatalytic remediation, taking into account their specific advantages and the drawbacks. Challenges for which a better understanding related to the complexity of the systems and the coexistence of various solid-liquid-gas interfaces have been identified.

Heavy metals immobilization and improvement in maize (Zea mays L.) growth amended with biochar and compost

Soil with heavy metals contamination, mainly lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) is a progressively worldwide alarming environmental problem. Recently, biochar has been used as a soil amendment to remediate contaminated soils, but little work has been done to compare with other organic amendments like compost. We investigated biochar and compost's comparative effect on Pb, Cd, and Cr immobilization in soil, photosynthesis, and growth of maize plants. Ten kg soil was placed in pots and were spiked with Pb, Cd, and Cr at concentrations 20, 10, 20 mg kg^-1. The biochar and compost treatments included 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4% were separately applied to the soil. The crop from pots was harvested after 60 days. The results show that the highest reduction of AB-DTPA extractable Pb, Cd, and Cr in soil was 79%, 61% and 78% with 4% biochar, followed by 61%, 43% and 60% with 4% compost compared to the control, respectively. Similarly, the highest reduction in shoot Pb, Cd, and Cr concentration was 71%, 63% and 78%with 4% biochar, followed by 50%, 50% and 71% with 4% compost than the control, respectively. The maximum increase in shoot and dry root weight, total chlorophyll contents, and gas exchange characteristics were recorded with 4% biochar, followed by 4% compost than the control. The maximum increase in soil organic matter and total nitrogen (N) was recorded at 4% biochar application while available phosphorus and potassium in the soil at 4% compost application. It is concluded that both biochar and compost decreased heavy metals availability in the soil, reducing toxicity in the plant. However, biochar was most effective in reducing heavy metals content in soil and plant compared to compost. In the future, more low-cost, eco-friendly soil remediation methods should be developed for better soil health and plant productivity.

Recycling of Blast Furnace and Coal Slags in Aided Phytostabilisation of Soils Highly Polluted with Heavy Metals

(1) Background: The growing demand for developing new methods of degraded land remediation is linked to the need to improve the soil environment, including post-industrial soils. Biological methods such as the aided phytostabilisation technique are the most common methods applied to achieve effective remediation. This study aimed to determine the technical potential of methods using novel or yet not used soil amendments, such as blast furnace slag (BFS) and coal slag (CS), with Dactylis glomerata L. as a test plant. (2) Methods: The experiment was conducted on post-industrial area soil with high concentrations of Cu (761 mg/kg), Cd (23.9 mg/kg), Pb (13,539 mg/kg) and Zn (8683 mg/kg). The heavy metal content in roots and the above-ground parts of plants and soil was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. (3) Results: The addition of BFS to the soil was the most effective in increasing Dactylis glomerata L. biomass yield. The Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of the plants. BFS and CS induced a considerable increase in soil pH, compared to the control treatment. The addition of BFS also produced the greatest significant decrease in the Pb content in soil following the phytostabilisation process. (4) Conclusions: In view of the above, the use of BFS in the aided phytostabilisation in soils contaminated with high levels of Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn can be recommended for larger-scale in situ projects.

Combined Use of Endophytic Bacteria and Pre-Sowing Treatment of Thiamine Mitigates the Adverse Effects of Drought Stress in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Cultivars

On a global scale, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a widely cultivated crop among all cereals. Increasing pollution, population expansion, socio-economic development, ecological and industrial policies have induced changes in overall climatic attributes. The impact of these factors on agriculture dynamics has led to various biotic and abiotic stresses, i.e., significant decline in rainfall, directly affect sustainable agriculture. Increasing abiotic stresses have a direct negative effect on worldwide crop production. More promising and improved stress-tolerant strategies that can help to feed the increasing global population are required. A laboratory experiment was performed on two of the latest wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (Akbar 2019 and Anaj 2017) from Punjab Pakistan, to determine the influence of seed priming with thiamine (vitamin B1) along with soil inoculation of Endophytic bacterial strains to mitigate the effects of drought stress at different degrees. Results revealed that thiamine helped in the remote germination; seeds of Anaj 2017 germinated within 16 hours while Akbar 2019 germinated after one day. Overall growth parameters of Anaj 2017 were negatively affected even under higher levels of drought stress, while Akbar 2019 proved to be a susceptible cultivar. A significant increase in RFW (54%), SFW (85%), RDW (69%), SDW (67%) and TChl (136%) validated the effectiveness of D-T3 compared to C-T0 in drought stress. Significant decrease in MDA, EL and H2O2 signified the imperative function of D-T3 over C-T0 under drought stress. In conclusion and recommendation, we declare that farmers can get better wheat growth under drought stress by application of D-T3 over C-T0.

Can the Application of Municipal Sewage Sludge Compost in the Aided Phytostabilization Technique Provide an Effective Waste Management Method?

(1) Background: sewage sludge is a by-product of wastewater treatment, which needs to be managed appropriately, e.g., in composting processes. The application of municipal sewage sludge composts (MSSCs) as a soil amendment is a potential way to effectively manage sewage sludge. (2) Methods: this paper presents the results of a vegetation pot experiment undertaken to assess the suitability of Dactylis glomerata L. and MSSC in the aided phytostabilization technique when applied on soils from an area effected by industrial pressure; this is characterized by high levels of heavy metal (HM). The contents of HMs in the test plant (the roots and above-ground parts), as well as in the soil and MSSC, were determined via an atomic spectrometry method. (3) Results: the application of MSSC positively contributed to an increased production of plant biomass and an increase in the pH in the soil. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cr were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of Dactylis glomerata L. The addition of MSSC contributed most significantly to the considerable reduction in Ni, Pb, and Zn contents in the soil after the experiment. (4) Conclusions: MSSC can support the phytostabilization of soils contaminated with high levels of HMs.
