Abstract
A combination of magnetic κ-carrageenan nanoparticles and deep eutectic supramolecular solvents used for extraction of catechol from water was evaluated by the magnetic dispersion solid phase extraction method. The magnetic κ-carrageenan nanoparticles (KC@Fe3O4MNPs) and the deep eutectic supramolecular solvent (DESP) were characterised by 1H NMR, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, VSM, TG, and BET. The adsorption kinetics, adsorption isothermal model, adsorption thermodynamics and effects of pH and salt concentration were investigated. Additionally, the factors used in the desorption process, such as the type, dosage, concentration and time, were analysed. Under the optimised conditions, the analytes were linear over the range 5-5000 ng mL-1, with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.999 and detection and quantitation limits of 1.6 and 4.7 ng mL-1, respectively. The procedure was successfully applied to determinations of the analytes of interest in spiked water samples with relative average recoveries ranging from 94.3% to 101.5%. These results indicated that the combination of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and DESP had high specificity and extraction efficiency for catechol and will be a feasible alternative to conventional analyses of organic phenolic pollutants in water.

Abstract
In this study, naphthalene-modified magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Nap) were simply prepared based on specific chelation interaction between phosphate groups and metal ions on Fe3O4 surface. The resultant Fe3O4@Nap were characterized by FTIR, BET, SEM, TEM, NAM, TGA, and VSM techniques. With Fe3O4@Nap as adsorbent, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were efficiently extracted by magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) from environmental water and fish samples through the π-π interaction between modified naphthalene groups and PAHs, followed by their determination by GC-MS/MS. The key parameters influencing the extraction efficiency were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the Fe3O4@Nap-based MSPE/GC-MS/MS method proposed in this paper was evaluated and applied for analyzing PAHs in environmental water and fish samples. And the proposed MSPE/GC-MS/MS method exhibited good linearities for water samples (in the range of 0.1-10 ng/mL, R2 >0.9945) and for fish samples (in the range of 1-100 ng/g, R2 > 0.9905). The limits of detection (LODs) for water and fish samples were 0.004-0.031 ng/mL and 0.07-0.28 ng/g, respectively. Additionally, this method exhibited desirable accuracy and precision. The PAH recovery values from water and fish samples ranged from 81.5% to 109.6% with inter- and intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 12.8%. The MSPE/GC-MS/MS method was successfully applied to the analysis of real environmental water and fish samples. Overall, the newly synthesized Fe3O4@Nap exhibited high sensitivity, specificity, reusability, repeatability, and it could efficiently extract PAHs from environmental water and fish samples by MSPE.

Abstract
In the present study, silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with vancomycin (Fe3O4@SiO2@VAN) were synthesized. The Fe3O4@SiO2@VAN nanocomposite was used as a sorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental water, followed by GC-MS. The nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and nitrogen sorption. Various experimental parameters were optimized, including extraction condition and desorption condition. Results show that Fe3O4@SiO2@VAN combined the advantages of nanomaterials and magnetic separation technology, showing excellent dispersibility and high selectivity for PAHs in environmental water sample. Under the optimal extraction conditions, an analytical method was established with the sensitive limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03-0.16 μg L-1. The method was successfully applied for the analysis of environmental water samples. The relative standard deviations (%) were in the range of 0.50-12.82%, and the extraction recovery (%) was in the range of 82.48% and 116.32%. MSPE-coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry quantification of PAHs is an accurate and repeatable method for the monitoring of PAH accumulation in environmental water samples. It also provides an effective strategy for the tracing and quantification of other environmental pollutants in complex samples.

Abstract
Abstract
A novel method was established for analysing trace four acidic phytohormones, namely, indole-3-acetic acid, 3-indolebutyric acid, abscisic acid, and 1-naphthylacetic acid, using magnetic ordered mesoporous carbon (MOMC). MOMC was facilely synthesised via self-assembly strategy with a direct carbonisation process. The properties of MOMC were characterised using various instruments. MOMC exhibited excellent adsorption capacity towards the analytes. Various critical parameters which may influence the enrichment efficiency were evaluated, including amount of MOMC, extraction conditions, and desorption conditions. An efficient method based on MOMC magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) was developed to analyse the trace four acidic phytohormones, with good correlation coefficients (R
2 = 0.9965–0.9998) and low limits of detection (0.13–9.7 ng L−1, S/N = 3). Trace acidic phytohormones in Agaricus bisporus and Hypsizygus marmoreus samples were determined with satisfactory recoveries (91.8–108%) and reproducibility (2.6–6.3%). The features indicated that MOMC provides an efficient platform for mushroom sampling; the developed method is convenient, promising, and sensitive for the detection of trace phytohormones in complicated mushroom samples.

Abstract
A newly synthesized free fatty acids from waste palm oil functionalized magnetic nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of graphene oxide (FFA@MNP-GO) was successfully synthesized and characterized in this research. The combinations of long alkyl chain of free fatty acid with graphene oxide that consists of large delocalized 77-electron systems and abundant of hydrophilic groups with hydroxyl, epoxide and carboxylic groups offer the determination of simultaneous wide range of polarities of organic pollutants in real matrices through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and 77-77 interactions. The fabricated adsorbent was successfully applied as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the simultaneous separation of selected phthalate esters (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in apple and cabbage extracts prior to their high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD) determination. Factors affecting the extraction efficiency such as amount of adsorbent, desorption solvent, volume of desorption solvent, extraction time, desorption time, pH and sample volume were investigated and optimized. The results revealed that under optimal conditions, the detection limit of selected PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 0.56-0.97 ng mL-1 and 0.02-0.93 ng mL-1, respectively. The spiked recoveries of real apple and cabbage extracts for PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 81.5-117.6% with good relative standard deviation (RSD) (n = 5) less than 10% and 86.7-118.2% with acceptable RSDs (n = 5) ranging from 1.5 to 11.0%, respectively. This study reported for the first time the use of MSPE procedure for simultaneous determination of chosen PAHs and PAEs in real samples including apple and cabbage extracts by using new adsorbent, FFA@MNP-GO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For the analysis of pesticide residues in water samples, various extraction techniques are available. However, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) are most commonly used. LLE and SPE extraction techniques each have their own disadvantages. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to develop an environment-friendly multi-residue method for determination of multiclass pesticides in environmental water samples (ground water, agricultural field/irrigation run-off water, etc.). METHODS The magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique using surface-fabricated magnetic nano-particles was used for extraction of water samples, followed by quantification by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The developed multi-residue method was validated in terms of linearity, LOD, LOQ, recovery, and repeatability. RESULTS Recovery data were obtained at the spiking concentration level of 1, 5, and 10 µg/L, yielding recoveries in the range of 70-120%. Overall, non-polar pesticides from all the groups, i.e., synthetic pyrethroid, organophosphorus, organochlorine, herbicides, and fungicides, show acceptable recovery percentages. Good linearity (r2 value ≥ 0.99) was observed at the concentration range of 0.5-100 µg/L. RSD values were found ≤ 18.8. CONCLUSIONS The study shows that the method is specific, rapid, and low cost, as well as having a good linearity and recovery; thus, this method is applied in routine purposes for the analysis of pesticide residue in real water samples. HIGHLIGHTS Due to better adsorption ability, permeability, and magnetic separability, the functionalized nano-particles were found effective in the enrichment of 22 multiclass pesticides including organo-phosphorus, organo-chlorine, synthetic pyrethroid, herbicides, and fungicides.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are hazardous environmental pollutants that possess mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs in environmental water samples are very low, and it is challenging to detect such levels directly by the analytical instrumentation. Thus, the extraction of PAHs using suitable extraction methodology is required for sample cleanup and analyte enrichment. Dispersive solid-phase extraction has several advantages over conventional approaches for the extraction of PAHs from environmental water samples. In this article, we critically evaluate the role of different nano and micro sorbent materials employed in the extraction of PAHs. Carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymeric nanocomposites, ionic-liquid based composites, and silica-based materials are explicitly covered. This review also provides insight on functional components of all types of sorbents and their way of interaction with PAHs. The factors affecting the dispersive (micro) solid phase extraction of PAHs such as the design of the sorbent, the ratio of functional material to magnetic core, sample volume, amount of sorbent, extraction and desorption times, desorption solvent and its volume, salt addition, and sample pH are critically appraised. Finally, a brief account on the accomplishments, limitations, and challenges associated with such methods is provided.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a group of chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs exhibit hydrophobicity and low water solubility, while some of their members are toxic substances resistant to degradation. Due to their low levels in environmental matrices, a preconcentration step is usually required for their determination. Nowadays, there is a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including micro-extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid phase microextraction) and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction etc.). Compared to the conventional sample preparation techniques, these novel techniques show some benefits, including reduced organic solvent consumption, while they are time and cost efficient. A plethora of adsorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon-based materials and molecularly imprinted polymers, have been successfully coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques. This review focuses on the recent advances in the extraction techniques of PAHs from environmental matrices, utilizing novel sample preparation approaches and adsorbents.

Abstract
In this research, an efficient sorbent based on poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester)-functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-CDP) was prepared and used for magnetic solid-phase extraction of the malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) from water samples prior to their determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet detection (HPLC-UV). The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by the field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Of course, the factors, which could influence the extraction efficiency like pH, sorbent amount, salt content, extraction time, desorption time, eluent type, and volume and sample volume, were optimized by response surface methodology. Then, for both of MG and CV, good linearity (0.1-200 μg L-1, r2 ≥ 0.99) was achieved under the optimized conditions. The limits of detection (LODs) and the limits of quantification (LOQs), for both of MG and CV, were 0.03 μg L-1 and 0.1 μg L-1, respectively. Precision of the method expressed as the relative standard deviations (RSDs) at concentration level of 100 μg L-1 was 5.6 and 4.2 for MG and CV, respectively. Ultimately, usability of proposed method was investigated by analysis of CV and MG in tap water, fish pond water, and the lake water, and the satisfactory recoveries were obtained in the range of 92-100.5%.

Abstract
Due to the trace levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and the complexity of soil matrices, effective sample pretreatment methods are of great significance to obtain accurate analytical results. In this paper, polydopamine (PDA) encapsulated Fe3O4 particles were used as seeds for in situ polymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) to derive magnetic hybrid material Fe3O4@PDA@PDVB. Coupled with pressurized liquid extraction, Fe3O4@PDA@PDVB was investigated as a selective adsorbent for the extraction and cleanup of PAHs in soil. The prepared magnetic material was characterized and demonstrated to possess strong hydrophobicity and superparamagnetism. Under optimal conditions, Fe3O4@PDA@PDVB can effectively extract 15 PAHs from a 30% methanol solution within 2 min, and it is more selective for PAHs than for n-alkane in soil extracts. The matrix effect significantly decreased after extraction by the prepared material, which showed superiority to a silica gel column method (EPA 3630C Method). The developed method was linear (5-1000 ng g-1) with coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.9986-0.9998, and the limits of detection were 0.13-0.54 ng g-1. Additionally, repetitive experiments indicated that the prepared material was reproducible and reusable with relative standard deviations below 8.4% and 8.6%, respectively. Finally, the new method was successfully employed to determine the concentrations of PAHs in genuine soil and standard reference material, and the results were comparable to those of widely utilized EPA methodology.

Abstract
Tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines are carcinogenic components in mainstream cigarette smoke. To explore tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine release levels in cigarettes, a magnetic solid-phase extraction procedure using magnetic graphene composite as sorbent for fast enrichment of tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine was developed. Under optimal conditions, a tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine determination method was successfully proposed by combining magnetic solid-phase extraction procedure and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The method's limit of detection for tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines in mainstream cigarette smoke ranged from 0.018 to 0.057 ng/cigarette. Good linearities were obtained with correlation coefficients above 0.9992. The accuracies of tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines in a spiked mainstream cigarette smoke sample were from 89.3 to 109.4%, with a relative standard deviation of less than 11.2%. The proposed method has the merits of rapidity and high sensitivity. Finally, the method was successfully applied to tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine analysis in real samples.

Abstract
Recently, water pollution caused by antibiotics is rapidly increasing. Thus, developing efficient, fast and sensitive detection methods for environmental antibiotics monitoring are still remaining elusive. Herein, a method for antibiotics analysis including lecofloxacin, pazcofloxacin and gatifloxacin in water by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using molybdenum disulfide-graphene oxide-supported magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4/GO/MoS2) as the adsorbent of magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed. The as-prepared magnetic Fe3O4/GO/MoS2 nanocomposite exhibited good enrichment capability toward fluoroquinolone antibiotics and the analytes were absorbed within a short time ca. 2 min. The main drive forces of Fe3O4/GO/MoS2 nanocomposite and antibiotics were most likely attributed to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. A sensitive and effective MSPE-HPLC method was developed with low detection limits (LODs) ranging from 0.25 to 0.50 ng mL-1. The recoveries obtained from the analysis of water sample were between 85.6% and 106.1% with relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 5) lower than 9.5%. The developed method has a good potential for the analysis of organic contaminants in water with low cost and high sensitivity. Therefore, this finding is a promising strategy for designing high efficiency and fast antibiotics detection system.

Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of ionic liquids (ILs) loaded onto the surface of a polymeric adsorbent (βCD-TDI) grafted with modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via an analysis of water treatment, which resulted in high removal of selected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (parabens). The syntheses of MNPs, MNP-βCD-TDI, and IL-MNP-βCD-TDI were characterised and compared using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen (CHN) analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of SEM and TEM indicated that the pore size distribution exhibited mesoporous characteristics with a small surface area (BET analysis: 42.95 m2 g-1). Furthermore, a preliminary sorption experiment demonstrated the ability of IL-MNP-βCD-TDI to enhance not only the sorption capacity, but also the removal of propyl paraben (PP), butyl paraben (BP), and benzyl paraben (ArP). The adsorption process appeared to be pH-dependent, and hence the optimum pH of 6 was selected for a subsequent batch adsorption study of all the studied parabens with an equilibrium time of 80 min. Next, in an attempt to investigate the interactions that occur between the adsorbent and the adsorbates, adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies were performed. All the studied parabens were found to best fit pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm with R 2 > 0.98 at room temperature (298 K). The interaction of the host-guest inclusion complex and the π-π interaction between βCD and a selected paraben compound (ArP) were identified by performing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), together with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic analysis. Finally, the adsorption efficiency of the developed material was practically tested on tap water, drain water, and industrial wastewater, which revealed a significant removal of parabens of up to 60-90% in comparison with a prior analysis.

Abstract
Polymeric ionic liquid-coated magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully prepared as adsorbents for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of four drugs, namely alfuzosin, doxazosin, terazosin and prazosin, from pharmaceutical preparations, urine samples and plasma samples. The four drugs were detected by fluorescence spectrophotometer. Several extraction parameters, including the pH of the solution; the type, ratio and volume of the desorbing reagent; the amount of adsorbent; the time of the extraction and desorption processes; and the addition of NaCl, were investigated and optimized. Linear responses were determined for the four drugs in the concentration range of 0.5 - 45 ng mL(-1). The limit of detection values for alfuzosin, doxazosin, terazosin and prazosin, which were defined as three times the standard deviation of a blank sample, were determined to be 0.035, 0.034, 0.027 and 0.028 ng mL(-1) (n = 11), respectively. Furthermore, this new method gave preconcentration factors of 114.5, 111.3, 111.1 and 108.5 for these four drugs.

Abstract
The authors have immobilized nanowires made from zirconium glycerolate (ZrGly) on magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles by applying a solvothermal growth process using metal-glycerolate as a precursor. The structure and the dissolution-recrystallization mechanism of the resulting Fe3O4@ZrGly composite were investigated by attenuated total reflection-FTIR, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and solid-state cross polarization/magic angle spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy. The interaction between the zirconium glycerolate in Fe3O4@ZrGly and cis-diols leads to efficient adsorption of riboncleosides which then can be quantified by HPLC with UV detection. The sorbent was successfully applied to the selective enrichment of adenosine, cytidine, uridine and guanosine from spiked human urine samples. The detection limit of the method is in the range from 1.7 to 19 ng·mL-1 of nucleosides in spiked human urine, with relative standard deviations of lower than 12.4% and recoveries ranging from 90.6 to 113%. Graphical abstract Fe3O4@ZrGly with high selectivity towards ribonucleosides was designed and applied for quantitation of urinary ribonucleosides.

Abstract
Graphene oxide was fabricated by a simple method and applied to magnetic solid-phase extraction. In a pretreatment procedure before the sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin in sesame oil were detected by high performance liquid chromatography. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated, including the type and volume of desorption solvent, desorption time and the amount of sorbent. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits of sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin were 0.05μg/g, 0.02μg/g, and 0.02μg/g, respectively. The limits of quantification were all 0.2μg/g. The average recoveries of sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin were 84.55%, 85.47%, 86.83%, respectively and their relative standard deviations were 1.23%, 1.33%, and 0.84%, respectively.

Abstract
Recently, a simple, rapid, high-efficiency, selective, and sensitive method for isolation, preconcentration, and enrichment of analytes has been developed. This new method of sample handling is based on ferum oxides as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and has been used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of various analytes from various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of modified ferum oxides, especially modified Fe3O4 MNPs, as MSPE adsorbent for pesticide isolation from various matrices. Further perspectives on MSPE based on modified Fe3O4 for inorganic metal ions, organic compounds, and biological species from water samples are also presented. Ferum(III) oxide MNPs (Fe2O3) are also highlighted.
