Facile and fast preparation of low-cost silica-supported graphitic carbon nitride for solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolone drugs from environmental waters

Simultaneous monitoring of multiple prohibited drugs in various aquatic products

Both sedative and antipathogenic drugs are often found to be illegally used in aquaculture, but there is a lack of simultaneous monitoring methods. A method for simultaneously monitoring multiple prohibited drugs in various aquatic product samples was developed in this work, including fish, shrimp, crab, and shellfish. Sulfonic acid-functionalized magnetic graphitic carbon nitride (S-MGCN) was synthesized and validated to efficiently co-extract all targets (adsorption efficiency over 90.07%) through various adsorption mechanisms such as electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction while demonstrating good sample matrix purification ability (matrix effect below 13.60%). A new magnetic solid-phase extraction method based on S-MGCN was subsequently established. Coupled with UPLC-MS/MS, the detection limits were 0.030.075 μg /kg, and the recoveries ranged from 88.76% to 111.74% with the RSDs lower than 14.60%, indicating that the developed method has good sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. Further validation of its practicality was achieved through actual sample analysis.

Low flow-resistance solid phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water and food samples by high-pressure wet spinning porous polyimide microfibers

In this work, porous polyimide microfibers (PI-μF) were prepared by high-pressure wet spinning method, and successfully applied as adsorbents for solid phase extraction (SPE) of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in water and food samples. The PI-μFs of ∼10, 25, 50, 100 μm in diameter could be controlled by the inner diameter of quartz capillary nozzles. The flow resistance of SPE cartridges packed with 10 μm PI microfiber (10-PI-μF) and 25-PI-μF was comparable to or even lower than that of commercial SPE cartridges, while the flow resistance of 50-PI-μF and 100-PI-μF SPE cartridges was increased obviously due to tiny broken pieces. The 10-PI-μF and 25-PI-μF have a specific surface area of 102 m2 g-1 and 76 m2 g-1, mesopores of 22-32 nm, and large breakthrough volume of 110 mL/5 mg and 85 mL/5 mg for FQs, while the 50-PI-μF and 100-PI-μF had much lower specific surface area and hardly had retention for FQs. FQs from tap water, egg and milk samples were then extracted by PI-μF SPE, and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). SPE parameters as type of elution solvent, elution solvent volume, pH value of sample solution, flow rate of sample solution, and breakthrough volume were first optimized in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the PI-μF SPE/HPLC-FLD method showed high recoveries (96.8%-107%), wide linearity (0.05-50 μg L-1, or 0.01-10 μg L-1), high determination coefficients (R2 ≥0.9992), and low limits of detection (LODs, 0.005-0.014 μg L-1). For the real tap water, egg and milk samples, the recoveries and RSDs were 81-119% and 0.8-9.8%, respectively. The results show that porous microfiber up to 25 μm in diameter is a promising solid-phase extraction adsorbent with the lowest flow resistance that can be used for trace organic pollutants in water and food samples.

Determination of fluoroquinolones in chicken muscle by molecularly imprinted graphitic carbon nitride-based solid-phase extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography

A graphitic carbon nitride was synthesised and nalidixic acid (NA) based molecularly imprinted microspheres (MIMs) were polymerised on its surface to create a composite material. After characterisation and evaluation of its absorption ability, the composite was used to prepare a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge for purification of fluoroquinolones in chicken muscle, analysed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography. The cartridge showed high absorption capacities (378-559 μg) and high recoveries (92.1-99.4%) for eight fluoroquinolones, and could be reused at least 20 times. The limits of detection for the 8 drugs were 0.2-0.8 ng g^-1, and recoveries from standard fortified blank chicken muscle samples were 71.9-96.8%. This is the first study reporting the use of molecularly imprinted graphitic carbon nitride composite to determine the residue of veterinary drug in foods of animal origin.

Application of Carbonic Nanosheets Based on Urea Precursors as Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction Adsorbent for Extraction of Methamphetamine from Urine Samples

Purpose: This paper established the application of synthesized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (GCNNs) as an influential dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) adsorbent in extracting methamphetamine from complicated urine media coupled with high performance liquid chromatography.

Methods: The graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (GCNNs) was synthesized easily and applied as adsorbent in the extraction process. The effective extraction parameters were investigated by one-parameter-at-a-time. Under optimized conditions the method was validated.

Results: The calibration curve was plotted in the concentration range of 50-1500 ng/mL through the optimized conditions and the proposed method was validated. The method was used for the analysis of positive urine samples and showed satisfactory results with the average 99.7% relative recovery.

Conclusion: The results persuade the capability of this novel method in analyzing of the positive urine samples in diverse clinical and forensic laboratories.

Macro-microporous zeolitic imidazole framework-8/cellulose aerogel for semi-automated pipette tip solid phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water

In this study, Zeolitic Imidazole Framework-8/cellulose aerogel (ZIF-8/CA) hybrid was successfully fabricated through a simple doping method and ZIF-8 acted as the major component for adsorption. In order to elucidate the adsorption mechanism deeply, molecular simulation was adopted to the expound the interaction modes between ZIF-8 and the fluoroquinolones (FQs). ZIF-8/CA was used as the adsorbent for semi-automated pipette tip solid phase extraction (PT-SPE). In combination with high performance liquid chromatography tandem fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD), the established method was successfully employed to determine trace amount of FQs in water samples. Extraction parameters such as the content of ZIF-8, pH of sample solution, volume of sample, flow rate of sampling, type and volume of elution solvent were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, satisfactory linearity was achieved with the correlation coefficient (R²) ranging from 0.9954 to 0.9992. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.337-1.707 ng L^-1. And the recoveries varied from 75.9% to 96.8% with RSD less than 8.0%. The established method was demonstrated to be sensitive, efficient and convenient.

Hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticle assisted catanionic surfactant supramolecular solvent microextraction of multiresidue antibiotics in water samples

A novel extraction technique i.e. hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-assisted in situ supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) microextraction was proposed, and it was applied for the analysis of sulfonamides (SAs) and fluoroquinolones (FQs) in aqueous samples, coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-UV detection (HPLC-UV). In this extraction method, hexafluoroisopropanol-mediated salt-free catanionic surfactant based SUPRAS in situ microextraction was initially carried out; then, the SUPRAS was quickly adsorbed by the hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles and gathered by an external magnetic field. This can greatly shorten the separation time and overcome the dependence on centrifugation, and also perform a secondary extraction of free analytes (not extracted by SUPRAS) from water samples. The magnetic separation ability of different hydrophobic MNPs was evaluated by adsorbing supramolecular aggregates from the water sample. The effective parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the analytes were investigated and optimized using the one variable at a time method. About 3 min was required to realize the extraction of analytes with an enrichment factor (EF) of 12-53 for SAs and 79-118 for FQs. Compared with the centrifugation-assisted SUPRAS microextraction, the hydrophobic MNP-assisted SUPRAS microextraction obtained much better extraction and preconcentration efficiency. The proposed novel extraction method with HPLC-UV provided LODs of 0.21-0.76 ng mL-1 for SAs and 0.10-0.18 ng mL-1 for FQs. Good linearity was obtained with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9962 to 0.9999. The intra- and inter-day recoveries of the target antibiotics were in the range of 92.0-111.3% with RSD% below 10.4%. The method was successfully applied to determine SAs and FQs in real water samples, such as lake water, river water, reservoir water, and wastewater.

Extraction of Cyproheptadine as Potent Appetizing Stimulant in Herbal Supplements by Efficient Carbon Nitride Nanosheets as Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction Adsorbent

Background: Application of natural-based herbal medicine is on a growing trend in some countries and people prefer to use plant-originated drugs rather than chemical-based ones. The present study describes an interesting sample preparation method for extraction and determination of cyproheptadine in herbal supplements as appetizing stimulant by using carbon nitride nanosheets as dispersive solid phase extraction method coupled with HPLCUV. Methods: Various techniques used for characterization of adsorbent such as: Infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Zeta potential analysis and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Optimization of the important extraction parameters were conducted by one parameter-at-a time method. Next, method validation was carried out. Results: The optimized cyproheptadine extraction parameters were introduced and under optimized conditions the method presented a good linearity in the concentration range of 300-2000 ng/g. The limit of detection (LOD) was 100 ng/g for the introduced method. Conclusion: Quantitative analysis of fifteen real samples (Tablets or capsules) by proposed method confirmed the illegal presence of cyproheptadine in herbal appetizing stimulants supplements of the markets.

Solid phase extraction-based magnetic carbon nitride/metal organic framework composite with high performance liquid chromatography for the determination of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in urine samples

In this study, a novel solid phase extraction method was constructed to detect three tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in urine with a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector. The sorbent MCN/BIF-20 was constructed by magnetic g-C₃N₄ (MCN) and boron imidazole framework-20 (BIF-20) and was characterized by multiple techniques. The experimental results of the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics indicated that the composites had good adsorption of TKIs (148.33 mg g^-1, 283.25 mg g^-1, 188.17 mg g^-1). The reason for the good adsorption property of the complex material was revealed by comparison with each single material. The analytical method was built by a single factor experiment, and was evaluated as a suitable method to detect TKIs in urine by its good accuracy (90.35-98.69%), precision (<3.9%), appropriate detection limits (2.2-3.4 ng mL^-1), and linear ranges (12.5-500 ng mL^-1) with convenient determination coefficients (>0.9997). The performance of the MCN/BIF-20 composite did not decrease dramatically in 3 cycles. These analytical results demonstrated that g-C₃N₄ and BIFs had a bright prospect in sample pretreatment, and the proposed approach based on MCN/BIF-20 was applicable for analysis of TKIs in urine.

Fast and simple determination of estrogens in milk powders by magnetic solid-phase extraction using carbon nitride composites prior to HPLC

A graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄)-based magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) approach was established for fast and simple analysis of estrogens in milk powders. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and pore size distribution analyzer. Compared with the bulk g-C₃N₄, g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄ gave a narrower distribution of mesopores and provided an enhanced surface area from 77.1 to 113.7 m²/g. Polar analytes of estrogens were selected as model compounds and the extraction of four estrogens was achieved in n-hexane using 15 mg of adsorbent within only 2 min. Possible extraction mechanism of g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄ for these estrogens was explored in terms of the polarity of the analytes and the adsorption performance of the adsorbent. The hydrophobicity and the hydrogen-bond interaction between the estrogens and g-C₃N₄ were responsible for the efficient adsorption. Combined with HPLC, MSPE with the prepared adsorbent gave the enhancement factors of 20 to 24 and the linear ranges of 2-200 μg/kg for 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol, 1.5-150 μg/kg for estrone, and 3-300 μg/kg for hexestrol. The detection limits and quantification limits for the estrogens in milk powders were 0.5-0.9 μg/kg and 1.5-3.0 μg/kg, respectively. The recoveries varied from 75.1 to 97.2%, with the intra-day and inter-day precisions ≤ 14.2%. Furthermore, the enrichment of the analytes and the clean-up of fat and protein interferences were achieved simultaneously with one-step g-C₃N₄-based MSPE. The present method was convenient, fast, and sensitive, and therefore could be successfully applied for the determination of estrogens in milk powders. Graphical abstract.

HA-C@silica sorbent for simultaneous extraction and clean-up of steroids in human plasma followed by HPLC-MS/MS multiclass determination

Aim and novelty of this work are the development of a simple and straightforward analytical procedure for multiclass determination of steroid hormones in human plasma. The method entails a single pre-treatment step based on solid-phase extraction using a recently proposed sorbent phase (HA-C@silica). This is easily prepared with good reproducibility via pyrolysis of humic acids onto silica, and not yet tested in biological fluids. It proved to be advantageous as it showed poor affinity for the protein matrix constituents while quantitatively extracting and pre-concentrating the target analytes. Indeed, as demonstrated in bovine serum albumin solution, up to ca. 90% protein is not retained by the sorbent, similarly to the behaviour of restricted access carbon nanotubes, tested for comparison. The high albumin exclusion allowed a satisfactory clean-up avoiding protein precipitation and centrifugation before extraction. The extraction procedure, optimized by a chemometric approach (2³ experimental design) in BSA solution, provided quantitative recovery (76-119%, n = 3) for all steroids working with 1:8-diluted plasma (2 mL) and 100 mg HA-C@silica. Before analytes elution by 1 mL methanol-acetonitrile (1:1, v/v), selective washings (2% v/v formic acid and 30% v/v methanol) were applied to remove the small fraction of retained proteins, thus obtaining very clean SPE extracts to be analyzed by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. This allowed identification/quantification (MRM mode) at few ng mL^-1 by a single chromatographic run. The procedure was verified in blank-certified foetal bovine serum (spikes 10-100 ng mL^-1), obtaining good recovery and suitable inter-day precision (RSDs < 15%, n = 3). The analytical method, applied to real plasma samples analysis, is appealing in terms of sample throughput, extraction efficiency and clean-up.

Core-Shell Molecularly Imprinted Polymers on Magnetic Yeast for the Removal of Sulfamethoxazole from Water

In this work, magnetic yeast (MY) was produced through an in situ one-step method. Then, MY was used as the core and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the template to produce highly selective magnetic yeast-molecularly imprinted polymers (MY@MIPs). The physicochemical properties of MY@MIPs were assessed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), specific surface area (S_BET) determination, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to compare MY@MIPs with MY and MY@NIPs (magnetic yeast-molecularly imprinted polymers without template), with MY@MIPs showing a better performance in the removal of SMX from water. Adsorption of SMX onto MY@MIPs was described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, with maximum adsorption capacities of 77 and 24 mg g^-1 from ultrapure and wastewater, respectively. Furthermore, MY@MIPs displayed a highly selective adsorption toward SMX in the presence of other pharmaceuticals, namely diclofenac (DCF) and carbamazepine (CBZ). Finally, regeneration experiments showed that SMX adsorption decreased 21 and 34% after the first and second regeneration cycles, respectively. This work demonstrates that MY@MIPs are promising sorbent materials for the selective removal of SMX from wastewater.

Thermally condensed humic acids onto silica as SPE for effective enrichment of glucocorticoids from environmental waters followed by HPLC-HESI-MS/MS

Pristine humic acids (HAs) were thermally condensed onto silica microparticles by a one-pot, inexpensive and green preparation route obtaining a mixed-mode sorbent (HA-C@silica) with good sorption affinity for glucocorticoids (GCs). The carbon-based material, characterized by various techniques, was indeed applied as the sorbent for fixed-bed solid-phase extraction of eight GCs from river water and wastewater treatment plant effluent, spiked at different concentration levels in the range 1-400 ng L^-1. After sample extraction, the target analytes were simultaneously and quantitatively eluted in a single fraction of methanol, achieving enrichment factor 4000 and 1000 in river water and wastewater effluent, respectively. Full recovery for all compounds, was gained in the real matrices studied (80-125% in river water, 79-126% in wastewater effluent), with inter-day precision showing relative standard deviations (RSD) below 15% and 18% (n = 3), for river and wastewater effluent, correspondingly. The high enrichment factors coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry quantification (MRM mode) provided method quantification limits of 0.009-0.48 ng L^-1 in river water and 0.06-3 ng L^-1 in wastewater effluent and, at the same time, secure identification of the selected drugs. As also evidenced by comparison with literature, HA-C@silica proved to be a valid alternative to the current commercial sorbents, in terms of extraction capability, enrichment factor, ease of preparation and cost. The batch-to-batch reproducibility was assessed by recovery tests on three independently prepared HA-C@silica powders (RSD lower than 7%).

A simple dispersive-micro-solid phase extraction based on a colloidal silica sorbent for the spectrophotometric determination of Fe(ii) in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide

This study demonstrates a simplified dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (d-μ-SPE) using silica sol as the sorbent for the preconcentration of ferrous ions.

Rationalization of hydrogen production by bulk g-C3N4: an in-depth correlation between physico-chemical parameters and solar light photocatalysis

The aim of this work is the systematic study of the photocatalytic activity of bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) in relation with the physical–chemical, structural and optical properties of the semiconductor. Fourteen g-C₃N₄ samples have been prepared by thermal condensation starting from three different precursor (melamine, dicyandiamide and urea) and exploring various temperatures (in the range 500–700 °C). The materials obtained have been deeply characterized by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption measurements (BET method), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Each semiconductor, coupled with Pt co-catalyst, was tested for hydrogen gas production from aqueous triethanolamine as model sacrificial agent, under simulated solar light. The hydrogen evolution profiles turned out to be strictly dependent on precursor type and synthesis temperature, with the highest evolution rate observed for the samples series produced from urea (up to ca. 4400 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹). The results, corroborated by the excellent inter-day precision of irradiation tests (RSD < 5%, n = 3) together with the good batch-to-batch reproducibility (RSD < 11%, n = 3), were critically discussed. Apart from the appealing production values obtained using the as-prepared materials, it was importantly pointed out that, besides crystallinity and visible light absorption, the photocatalytic behavior is definitely correlated to the surface area, which is dependent on the synthesis conditions, that is polymerization temperature and nature of g-C₃N₄ precursor. Overall, this systematic investigation demonstrated that, contrary to the polymerization degree (sp²/sp³ carbon ratio), surface area is the real determinant parameter for g-C₃N₄ hydrogen evolution activity.

Extensive physico-chemical investigation on bulk g-C₃N₄ allowed a reliable correlation between hydrogen production and materials properties to be established.

Facile synthesis of graphitic C3N4 nanoporous-tube with high enhancement of visible-light photocatalytic activity

A simple and convenient method was used to synthesize a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) nanoporous-tube by using SiO₂ nanoparticles as pore formers. The structure of the g-C₃N₄ nanoporous-tube was characterized by the SEM and TEM images. Taking photodegradation of RhB as an example, the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared g-C₃N₄ nanoporous-tube was investigated. It can photodegrade 90% RhB in 40 min under visible-light irradiation and obtain a k value of 0.04491 min^-1, which is 8.16 times that of bulk g-C₃N₄, 3.09 times that of tubular g-C₃N₄ and 1.48 times that of tubular g-C₃N₄-SiO₂. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic efficiency is due to the edge effect of the pores and the special structure of the tubes. In addition, the possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of RhB was also proposed based on the trapping experiment of active species, which indicated that the superoxide radicals ([Formula: see text]) and the holes (h ⁺) were the main reactive species in this photocatalyst. This work may open up a new idea of innovation in g-C₃N₄ structure and inspire its follow-up study.
