Electrodeposition of Bi from Choline Chloride-Malonic Acid Deep Eutectic Solvent

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has been widely used in the field of metal electrodeposition as an economical and environmentally friendly green solvent. Metallic bismuth films were prepared by electrodeposition from choline chloride-malonic acid (ChCl-MA) deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing BiCl₃. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the structure of ChCl-MA-BiCl₃, and the results showed that Bi(III) was in the form of [BiCl₆]^3- ions. The viscosity of ChCl-MA-BiCl₃ ranges from 200 to 1200 mPa·s at temperatures from 363 K to 323 K. The conductivity of 0.01 M Bi(III) in ChCl-MA is 3.24 ms·cm^-1 at 363 K. The electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition of Bi(III) in DES were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry. The results showed that the electrodeposition reaction was a quasi-reversible reaction controlled by the diffusion and the nucleation of bismuth was a three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation. The diffusion coefficient of Bi(III) in ChCl-MA was 1.84 × 10^-9 cm²·s^-1. The electrodeposition product was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results showed that the deposition potential has a significant influence on the morphology of the bismuth film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that bismuth and bismuth oxides are present in the deposited film obtained by electrodeposition.

Molecule(s) of Interest: I. Ionic Liquids-Gateway to Newer Nanotechnology Applications: Advanced Nanobiotechnical Uses', Current Status, Emerging Trends, Challenges, and Prospects

Ionic liquids are a potent class of organic compounds exhibiting unique physico-chemical properties and structural compositions that are different from the classical dipolar organic liquids. These molecules have found diverse applications in different chemical, biochemical, biophysical fields, and a number of industrial usages. The ionic liquids-based products and procedural applications are being developed for a number of newer industrial purposes, and academic uses in nanotechnology related procedures, processes, and products, especially in nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine. The current article overviews their uses in different fields, including applications, functions, and as parts of products and processes at primary and advanced levels. The application and product examples, and prospects in various fields of nanotechnology, domains of nanosystem syntheses, nano-scale product development, the process of membrane filtering, biofilm formation, and bio-separations are prominently discussed. The applications in carbon nanotubes; quantum dots; and drug, gene, and other payload delivery vehicle developments in the nanobiotechnology field are also covered. The broader scopes of applications of ionic liquids, future developmental possibilities in chemistry and different bio-aspects, promises in the newer genres of nanobiotechnology products, certain bioprocesses controls, and toxicity, together with emerging trends, challenges, and prospects are also elaborated.

Microporous N-Doped Carbon Obtained from Salt Melt Pyrolysis of Chitosan toward Supercapacitor and Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

The direct carbonization of low-cost and abundant chitosan biopolymer in the presence of salt eutectics leads to highly microporous, N-doped nanostructures. The microporous structure is easily manufactured using eutectic mixture (ZnCl2-KCl) and chitosan. Potassium ions here can act as an intercalating agent, leading to the formation of lamellar carbon sheets, whereas zinc chloride generates significant porosity. Here, we present an efficient synthetic way for microporous carbon nanostructures production with a total nitrogen content of 8.7%. Preliminary studies were performed to show the possibility of the use of such material as a catalyst for supercapacitor and ORR. The textural properties enhanced capacitance, which stem from improved accessibility of previously blocked or inactive pores in the carbon structure, leading to the conclusion that porogen salts and molten salt strategies produce materials with tailor-made morphologies. The synergistic effect of the eutectic salt is seen in controlled porous structures and pore size, and the micropores boosting adsorption ability.

Preparation of poly(ionic liquid)/multi-walled carbon nanotube fillers using divinylbenzene as a linker to enhance the impact resistance of polyurethane elastomers

The brittle fracture of polyurethane elastomer (PUE) under high-speed impact limits its application in high-speed impact protection. Here, based on the principle of free radical polymerization and π-π conjugation, composite nanoparticles (C-MWCNTs) are prepared by copolymerization of epoxy group ionic liquid (GVIMBr) and divinylbenzene (DVB) on MWCNTs using DVB as a linker. C-MWCNTs participate in the curing process of PUE through epoxy groups to form in situ crosslinked C-MWCNTs/PUE, which improves the energy absorption and high-speed impact properties of PUE. Compared with neat PUE, the maximum compressive strength and energy absorbed by C-MWCNTs/PUE are increased by 46.3% and 23.6%, respectively. By observing the microsurface and fracture morphology of C-MWCNTs/PUE, the relationship between macroscopic mechanical properties and microstructure is constructed. The improvement of the mechanical properties of the C-MWCNTs/PUE is attributed to the interfacial interaction and homogeneous dispersion of the C-MWCNTs in the PUE matrix. These microscopic effects are caused by the good compatibility between GVIMBr and PUE matrix and the synergistic enhancement between GVIMBr and MWCNTs.

Properties and Recent Advantages of N,N’-dialkylimidazolium-ion Liquids Application in Electrochemistry

N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium-ion liquids is one of the important ionic liquids with a wide range of application as conductive electrolyte and in electrochemistry. The modified electrodes create a new view in fabrication of electroanalytical sensors. Many modifiers have beeen suggested for modification of electroanalytical sensor since many years ago. Over these years, ionic liquids and especially room temperature ionic liquids have attracted more attention due to their wide range of electrochemical windows and high electrical conductivity. N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium-ion liquids are one of the main important ionic liquids suggested for modification of bare electrodes and especially carbon paste electrodes. Although many review articles have reported onthe use of ionic liquids in electrochemical sensors, no review article has been specifically introduced so far on the review of the advantages of N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid. Therefore, in this review paper we focused on the introduction of recent advantages of N,Nʹ-dialkyl imidazolium ionic liquid in electrochemistry.

Review on Amphiphilic Ionic Liquids as New Surfactants: From Fundamentals to Applications

The demand for lowering interfacial tension (IFT) in different processes has persuaded researchers to use stable and resistant surfactants with low environmental impact. For this purpose, surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) have attracted much attention owing to their good amphiphilic nature and prominent properties like recyclability and high performance under harsh conditions. This review initially explains how the IFT and critical micelle concentration of different systems vary in the presence of different SAILs with a variety of alkyl chain lengths, head groups, and counter anions. Towards this aim, some physicochemical properties of SAILs as well as the corresponding theoretical aspects of adsorption are considered. Then, recent advances in utilizing SAILs for reducing IFT of different chemical systems are surveyed. Relevantly, the role of important operating parameters of temperature, pH, presence of electrolytes, and the chemical nature of involved phases are adequately discussed. Further, an overview of different SAILs applications in stabilization, separation, and in petroleum industries is scrutinized. To allow better judgment, precise comparisons between different types of SAILs and conventional surfactants are provided. Finally, challenges and possible directions of future research on SAILs are highlighted.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photocatalytic Behavior of SiO2 @nitrized-TiO2 Nanocomposites Obtained by a Straightforward Novel Approach

We report on the facile synthesis of SiO2 @nitrized-TiO2 nanocomposite (NST) by calcination of TiO2 xerogel with OctaAmmonium POSS® (N-POSS; POSS=polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes). The as-obtained nanoporous mixed oxide is constituted by uniformly distributed SiO2 and nitrized-TiO2 , where the silica component is present in an amorphous state and TiO2 in an anatase/rutile mixed phase (92.1 % vs. 7.9 %, respectively) with very small anatase crystallites (3.7 nm). The TiO2 lattice is nitrized both at interstitial and substitutional positions. NST features a negatively charged surface with a remarkable surface area (406 m2  g-1 ), endowed with special adsorption capabilities towards cationic dyes. Its photocatalytic behavior was tested by following the degradation of standard aqueous methylene blue and methyl orange solutions under UV and visible light irradiation, according to ISO 10678:2010. For comparison, analogous investigations were carried out on a silica-free N-TiO2 , obtained by using NH4 Cl as nitrogen source.

Ionic Liquid in Phosphoric Acid-Doped Polybenzimidazole (PA-PBI) as Electrolyte Membranes for PEM Fuel Cells: A Review

Increasing world energy demand and the rapid depletion of fossil fuels has initiated explorations for sustainable and green energy sources. High-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) are viewed as promising materials in fuel cell technology due to several advantages, namely improved kinetic of both electrodes, higher tolerance for carbon monoxide (CO) and low crossover and wastage. Recent technology developments showed phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PA-PBI) membranes most suitable for the production of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, drawbacks caused by leaching and condensation on the phosphate groups hindered the application of the PA-PBI membranes. By phosphate anion adsorption on Pt catalyst layers, a higher volume of liquid phosphoric acid on the electrolyte-electrode interface and within the electrodes inhibits or even stops gas movement and impedes electron reactions as the phosphoric acid level grows. Therefore, doping techniques have been extensively explored, and recently ionic liquids (ILs) were introduced as new doping materials to prepare the PA-PBI membranes. Hence, this paper provides a review on the use of ionic liquid material in PA-PBI membranes for HT-PEMFC applications. The effect of the ionic liquid preparation technique on PA-PBI membranes will be highlighted and discussed on the basis of its characterization and performance in HT-PEMFC applications.

Computational approach to (ZnS)_{i} nanoclusters in ionic liquids

Unique and attractive properties have been predicted for II-VI-type semiconductor nanoclusters within the field of nanotechnology. However, the low reaction kinetics within the usual solvents gives only thermodynamic control during their production process, making the obtention of different metastable polymorphs extremely difficult. The use of ionic liquids as solvents has been proposed to overcome this problem. Identifying how these nanoclusters are solvated within ionic liquids is fundamental if this strategy is to be pursued. While computational chemistry tools are best suited for this task, the complexity and size of the system requires a careful design of the simulation protocol, which is put forward in this work. Taking as reference the (ZnS)_{12} nanocluster and the [EMIM][EtSO_{4}] ionic liquid, we characterize the interactions between the nanoparticle and first solvation shell by density functional theory calculations, considering most of the solvent implicitly. The DFT results are consistent through different theory levels showing a strong interaction between the Zn atoms of the nanocluster and the [EtSO_{4}^{-}] anion of the ionic liquid. A more realistic representation of the system is obtained by classical MD calculations, for which various classical force fields were considered and several atomic interactions parameterized. This new set of parameters correctly describes the interaction of different (ZnS) nanoclusters, supporting its transferability. The resulting MD simulation shows the formation of a structured ionic liquid solvation shell around the nanocluster with no exchange of ions for at least 5 ns, in agreement with the strong interactions observed in the density functional theory calculations.

Tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium Ionic Liquids: Structure, Properties and Application as Hybrid Catalyst Nanomaterials

A series of sterically hindered tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17) was synthesized and systematically studied by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and melting point measurement. Formation and stabilization palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were used to characterize the phosphonium ionic liquid (PIL) nanoscale interaction ability. The colloidal Pd in the PIL systems was described with TEM and DLS analyses and applied in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The PILs were proven to be suitable stabilizers of PdNPs possessing high catalytic activity. The tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts showed a complex nonlinear correlation of the structure–property relationship. The synthesized family of PILs has a broad variety of structural features, including hydrophobic and hydrophilic structures that are entirely expressed in the diversity of their properties

Biofilm control by ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are remarkable chemical compounds with applications in many areas of modern science. They are increasingly recognized as promising compounds to fight microorganisms in both planktonic and biofilm states, contributing to reinvent the antimicrobial pipeline. Biofilm-related infections are particularly challenging given that the scientific community has not yet identified a reliable control strategy. Understanding of the action of ILs in biofilm control is is still in a very early stage. However, given the highly tunable nature and exceptional properties of ILs, they are excellent candidates for biofilm control. Here, we review the major advances in, and challenges tothe use of ILs for effective biofilm control.

Multi-Interactions in Ionic Liquids for Natural Product Extraction

Natural products with a variety of pharmacological effects are important sources for commercial drugs, and it is very crucial to develop effective techniques to selectively extract and isolate bioactive natural components from the plants against the background of sustainable development. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a kind of designable material with unique physicochemical properties, including good thermal stability, negligible vapor pressure, good solvation ability, etc. ILs have already been used in pharmaceuticals for extraction, purification, drug delivery, etc. It has been reported that multi-interactions, like hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, play important roles in the extraction of bioactive components from the plants. In this review, recent progress in the understanding of scientific essence of hydrogen bonding, the special interaction, in ILs was summarized. The extraction of various natural products, one important area in pharmaceutical, by conventional and functional ILs as well as the specific roles of multi-interactions in this process were also reviewed. Moreover, problems existing in bioactive compound extraction by ILs and the future developing trends of this area are given, which might be helpful for scientists, especially beginners, in this field.

Sterically Hindered Phosphonium Salts: Structure, Properties and Palladium Nanoparticle Stabilization

A new family of sterically hindered alkyl(tri-tert-butyl) phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) was synthesized and evaluated as stabilizers for the formation of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs), and the prepared PdNPs, stabilized by a series of phosphonium salts, were applied as catalysts of the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. All investigated phosphonium salts were found to be excellent stabilizers of metal nanoparticles of small catalytically active size with a narrow size distribution. In addition, palladium nanoparticles exhibited exceptional stability: the presence of phosphonium salts prevented agglomeration and precipitation during the catalytic reaction.

A microwave assisted ionic liquid route to prepare bivalent Mn5O8 nanoplates for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation

In order to develop highly active non-precious metal catalysts for the selective oxidation of the platform compound 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to the value-added bio-chemical 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), we prepared high purity bivalent Mn₅O₈ nanoplates by a microwave-assisted ionic liquid route. The precursor of bivalent Mn₅O₈ nanoplates was formed through π-π stacking between imidazolium rings of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride and extending hydrogen bonds between Cl anions and hydrohausmannite. An oriented aggregation growth occurred on the basis of the Ostwald ripening under microwave heating. The high purity bivalent Mn₅O₈ nanoplates obtained through calcination at 550 °C for 2 h exhibited high HMF conversion (51%) and DFF selectivity (94%) at 5 bar of oxygen pressure in 2 h. The high concentration of Mn⁴⁺ on the exterior surfaces of Mn₅O₈ nanoplates as active sites coupled with good crystallinity played key roles for desirable mass and heat transfer, and for fast desorption avoiding over-oxidation. The reaction process over the Mn₅O₈ nanoplates was proposed based on the understanding of Mn⁴⁺ active centers and lattice oxygen via a Mn⁴⁺/Mn²⁺ two-electron cycle to enhance their catalytic performance. Furthermore, the Mn₅O₈ nanoplates could be readily recovered and reused without loss of catalytic activity. Thus, the high purity Mn₅O₈ nanoplates with good catalytic performance raises the prospect of using the type of sole metal oxide for practical applications.

Quantum chemistry study of the interaction between ionic liquid-functionalized TiO2 quantum dots and methacrylate resin: Implications for dental materials

Quantum Chemistry calculations within the density functional Theory (DFT) are a powerful feature to obtain the atomistic and molecular properties of macromolecules such as polymers and nanoparticles. DFT calculations are essential to understand the stability of new composite materials. In this work, DFT with the Local Density Approximation (LDA) and norm-conserving pseudopotentials is used to analyze the energetic stability as well the electronic properties when titanium dioxide quantum dots (TiO_2QDs) are added to an adhesive resin (methacrylate - HEMA - and dimethacrylate - BisGMA - monomers), which presents reliable physical, chemical, and biological properties in dentistry. The ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMI.BF₄) was previously used to functionalize the quantum dots, forming the complex system TiO₂QDs/BMI.BF₄. DFT provides the most stable configuration through binding energies and bond distances analysis. Our results show that van der Waals interactions between BisGMA and HEMA may contribute to the stabilization of the interaction between the resin and TiO₂QDs/BMI.BF₄. Furthermore, according to experimental results, the calculations show that the presence of the ionic liquid increases the quantum dots and resin interactions (binding energies), suggesting that the ionic liquid is important to stabilize the TiO₂QDs/BMI.BF₄-resin composite.

The key role of R-NHC coupling (R = C, H, heteroatom) and M-NHC bond cleavage in the evolution of M/NHC complexes and formation of catalytically active species

Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Theoretical and Experimental Studies on the Visible Light Activity of TiO2 Modified with Halide-Based Ionic Liquids

Formation of a surface complex between organic molecules and TiO2 is one of the possible strategies for the development of visible light-induced TiO2 photoactivity. Herein, three ionic liquids (ILs) with the same cation and different anions (1-butylpirydynium chloride/bromide/iodide) have been applied for the surface modification of TiO2 and to understand the role of anions in visible light-induced activity of ILs-TiO2 systems. Photocatalytic screening tests (the measurements of phenol photodegradation reaction rate) revealed that anion type affected visible light activity (λ > 420 nm) of TiO2 obtained by the ILs-assisted solvothermal method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that interactions between halogen anions and oxygen vacancies (OV) on the surface of the TiO2 particles could be responsible for the specific wavelength-induced excitation and finally for the observed photoactivity of titania under visible light. Finally, our theoretical calculations have been proven by experiments using monochromatic light (the apparent quantum efficiency was measured) and the properties of obtained samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Methylene Blue Catalytic Degradation Using Silver and Magnetite Nanoparticles Functionalized with a Poly(ionic liquid) Based on Quaternized Dialkylethanolamine with 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropane Sulfonate-co-Vinylpyrrolidone

Catalytic degradation of organic water pollutants has emerged as a cost- and energy-effective technique to treat wastewater. In this work, new silver and magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared with a protic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) based on a quaternized diethylethanolamine cation combined with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate-co-vinylpyrrolidone (QAMPSA/VP) as a capping and a reducing agent. The morphology, particle size, surface charge, thermal stability, and magnetic properties of QAMPS/VP-Ag and Fe₃O₄ NPs were investigated to determine the efficiency of the PIL as a reducing and a capping agent to protect the produced NPs from oxidation or thermal degradation. The activation energy, enthalpy, and entropy of the catalytic degradation of the cationic methylene blue (MB) dye in the presence of QAMPS/VP-Ag and Fe₃O₄ NPs were determined. The data elucidated that MB was completely degraded in 8 min in the presence of QAMPS/VP-Fe₃O₄ NPs as a Fenton oxidation catalyst. Moreover, their good magnetic properties allowed their easy separation and reuse for five cycles without losing their magnetic or catalytic properties.

Acylselenoureato bis(chelates) of lead: synthesis, structural characterization and microwave-assisted formation of PbSe nano- and microstructures

Three lead(ii) bis(acylselenoureato) complexes were prepared by reaction of the respective acylselenourea compounds with Pb(OAc)₂. One of these lead complexes was converted into PbSe nano- and microstructures by microwave-assisted synthesis.

Brief bibliometric analysis of "ionic liquid" applications and its review as a substitute for common adsorbent modifier for the adsorption of organic pollutants

The importance of improving adsorbent's adsorption efficiency in organic pollutants has been reported by many researchers. Surfactant-based modified adsorbents were a tasteful choice. As a result, the use of surfactants as a modifier for removing organic pollutants has shown to play a very big role in enhancing the adsorption efficiency of different materials. Ionic liquids are receiving extensive interest as green multipurpose compounds, primarily as a replacement for traditional chemicals that are used in many chemical processes. This work gives a brief bibliometric analysis of application of ionic liquid from 1930 to 2017, documents were collected from Scopus database and keywords from the abstracts and titles were analyzed using VOSviewer software. Furthermore, the work presents a review of conventionally known surfactants and the recent likelihood of ionic liquids for modifying adsorbents for adsorption of organic pollutants. Over the period of years between 1930 and 2017, 13,144 documents were published on the application of ionic liquids. VOSviewer software further confirms that adsorption is one of the leading areas in applications of ionic liquids. Review also showed that ionic liquid is a good modifier of adsorbents.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Biocompatible Filler for Photo-Curable Dental Composite: From Theory to Experiment

Nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) is a new class of biocompatible fillers which has been recently utilized in bio hybrid materials by virtue of its excellent tissue bioactivity and biocompatibility. However, the need for higher thermal stability, solubility, surface bioactivity, radiopacity, and remineralization ability suggests a divalent cation substitution of HA for use in light curable dental restorative composites. In this work, structural and optical properties of Sr-doped hydroxyapatite were studied using first-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Next, Sr-doped hydroxyapatite (HA) was prepared via a new ionic liquid-assisted hydrothermal (ILH) route. Samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and cell viability. The obtained experimental data showed that the nucleation and crystal growth process controlled by [BMIM]Br molecules results in uniform products with small and regular particles and high specific surface areas. Finally, cytotoxicity tests showed that the as-prepared Sr-doped HA nanoparticles have good biocompatibility (≥91%), confirming their potential for use in photo-curable dental restorative composites.

Ionic liquid as antibacterial agent for an experimental orthodontic adhesive

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to formulate and evaluate experimental orthodontic adhesives with different concentrations of 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazoilium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMIM.NTf₂).

METHODS

The experimental orthodontic adhesives were formulated with methacrylate monomers, photoinitiators and silica colloidal. The ionic liquid BMIM.NTf₂ was synthesized and characterized. BMIM.NTf₂ was added at 5 (G_5%), 10 (G_10%) and 15 (G_15%) wt.%. One group contained no BMIM.NTf₂ to function as control (G_Ctrl). The adhesives were evaluated for polymerization kinetics, degree of conversion (DC), Knoop hardness and softening in solvent, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), shear bond strength (SBS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity.

RESULTS

BMI.NTf₂ showed the characteristic chemical peaks. The polymerization kinetics were different among the groups. G_10% and G_15% showed higher DC (p < 0.05). G_5% and G_Ctrl had no differences for softening in solvent (p > 0.05). There were no differences for UTS (p > 0.05) and SBS (p > 0.05). TGA showed one different peak for G_15%. All groups with BMIM.NTf₂ showed antibacterial activity compared to G_Ctrl (p < 0.05) without cytotoxicity (p > 0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

To reduce biofilm formation around brackets and to prevent demineralization at susceptible sites, materials have been developed with antibacterial properties. In this study, a new experimental orthodontic adhesive was formulated with an imidazolium ionic liquid (BMIM.NTf₂) as antibacterial agent. The incorporation of 5 wt.% of ionic liquid decreased biofilm formation without affecting the physico-chemical properties and cytotoxicity of an experimental orthodontic resin.

Impact of Tetrazolium Ionic Liquid Thermal Decomposition in Solvothermal Reaction on the Remarkable Photocatalytic Properties of TiO2 Particles

Ionic liquids (ILs) could serve as a structuring agent, a solvent, or a source of dopant during solvothermal synthesis of semiconductors particles. To understand the role of IL during formation of TiO₂ particles, it is necessary to study the stability of this IL in solvothermal synthesis conditions, as well as studying the surface properties of formed TiO₂ particles. In view of this, the effect of the 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride IL ([TPTZ][Cl]) thermal decomposition during the solvothermal reaction and IL content in the reaction system on photoactivity of TiO₂ microparticles has been systematically investigated. The samples obtained by using [TPTZ][Cl] exhibited remarkable photocatalytic properties in phenol degradation reaction under visible light. HPLC analysis of the solvothermal reaction medium and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of TiO₂ particles revealed that [TPTZ][Cl] was decomposed completely and was incorporated into the TiO₂ lattice. Generally, increasing the reaction time (1, 4, 12, and 24 h) promoted the TiO₂ microspheres formation, as well as raising the visible light-induced photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. Longer reaction time was also accompanied by an increase in the efficiency of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride decomposition. The properties of the photocatalysts were investigated by means of UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, and XPS.

Ionic Liquid–Stabilized Titania Quantum Dots Applied in Adhesive Resin

Quantum dots (QDs; 1 to 10 nm) were recently synthesized by sol-gel and used as nonagglomerated nanoparticles in adhesive resin. The sol-gel process presented a low yield and resulted in a liquid product without stability. In this study, an imidazolium ionic liquid (IL; 1- n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, BMI.BF4) was used as stabilizing agent to synthesize titanium dioxide QDs (TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4) via a chemical route. The product was isolated as powder after washing, centrifuging, and drying. An experimental adhesive resin was formulated by mixing methacrylate monomers and a photoinitiator system. The TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder was incorporated at 2.5 (G2.5%) and 5 (G5%) wt% in the adhesive resin, and one group remained without TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder as the control (Gctrl). The TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder was analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. The dispersion of TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder was analyzed in the polymerized adhesive resin with transmission electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. The adhesive resins were evaluated for immediate and long-term antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, polymerization behavior, degree of conversion, softening in solvent, immediate and long-term microtensile bond strength, and fracture pattern. The TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder showed peaks of anatase and rutile and 26 wt% of BMI.BF4. TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 presented a minimum size of 1.19 nm, a maximum size of 7.11 nm, and a mean ± SD size of 3.54 ± 1.08 nm. TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 was dispersed in the adhesive resin without agglomeration, presenting intermittent luminescence by blinking. The addition of any tested concentration of TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 powder provided immediate and long-term antibacterial activity without cytotoxic effect against the pulp fibroblasts. Furthermore, compared with Gctrl, G2.5% showed reliable polymerization behavior and degree of conversion without differences for softening in solvent with maintenance of bond adhesion to tooth immediately and over time. Thus, the incorporation of 2.5 wt% of TiO2QDs/BMI.BF4 in adhesive resin showed reliable physical, chemical, and biological properties.

Polyoxometalate-coupled MXene nanohybrid via poly(ionic liquid) linkers and its electrode for enhanced supercapacitive performance

MXenes are novel 2D transition metal carbides with metallic conductivity and hydrophilic surfaces, which have highly active 2D surfaces and can act as a promising new type of electrode material; however, their low capacity and irreversible self-restacking limit their practicality and development. This paper presents a novel method for preparing an MXene-polyoxometalate (POM) nanohybrid using poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as the linker. The electrostatic interactions, chemical structure, and morphology of this nanohybrid are systematically characterized and have indicated that the MXene-PIL-POM nanohybrid provides the uniform distribution of POM nanoparticles on the MXene nanosheets and exhibits excellent electrochemical activity and stability due to the use of PIL as the linker and stabilizer. The prepared MXene-PIL-POM nanohybrid, used as an electrode, displayed a definite improvement in electrochemical performance with the specific capacitance of 384.6 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, which is about three-fold higher than that of the MXene electrode. The MXene-PIL-POM electrode also achieved a good rate performance (90.5% retention at 10 A g-1) and a long cycling life (91.7% maintenance of specific capacitance at a constant current density of 4 A g-1 after 2000 cycles). The proposed nanohybrid structure capitalizes on the enhancement of the redox reactions of POM through the PIL linkers to facilitate charge transfer and provide efficient ion transfer channels in the nanohybrid.
