Abstract
CONTEXT Dietary components or its overall properties can influence an individual's sleep status. OBJECTIVE The aim for this study was to critically search, appraise, and synthesize research evidence on the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and sleep quality and its parameters. DATA SOURCES Original published studies on adults were obtained from the PubMed, SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. DATA EXTRACTION The search was conducted without date limitation until April 2023. Duplicated and irrelevant investigations were screened out, and the results of the remaining articles were descriptively summarized, then critically appraised and analyzed. Possible mechanistic pathways regarding diet, systemic inflammation, and sleep status were discussed. DATA ANALYSIS Of the 102 studies searched, 23 articles (n = 4 cohort studies, 18 cross-sectional studies, and 1 intervention study) were included in the final review. The association between DII and sleep status was investigated subjectively in 21 studies and objectively in 6 studies. The main studied sleep outcomes were sleep quality, duration, latency, efficiency, apnea, disturbances, the use of sleeping medications, daytime dysfunctions, wakefulness after sleep onset, and rapid eye movement. CONCLUSIONS According to most of the evidence, DII may not be related to overall sleep quality, sleep duration, latency, efficiency, and the use of sleeping medications. The evidence of positive association was greater between a high DII score (pro-inflammatory diet) with daytime dysfunctions, wakefulness after sleep onset, and sleep apnea. There is insufficient evidence to make any conclusion regarding sleep disturbances and rapid eye movement.

Abstract
Sleep has strong inflammatory underpinnings and diet is one of the primary determinants of systemic inflammation. A systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize current research associating dietary inflammatory potential, as measured by the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) or the energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™) and sleep quality and duration. The National Library of Medicine (Medline), Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases were searched through March 2023. Studies must have used the DII/E-DII as the independent variable and sleep outcomes as dependent variables. Study characteristics, based on STROBE guidelines, were scored based on the presence of the recommendation. Out of the initial 14 studies identified, a total of 12 studies were included for data synthesis. In all 12 studies, more anti-inflammatory diets (i.e., low DII/E-DII scores) were associated with better sleep in at least one sleep domain (most often sleep efficiency and wake-after-sleep-onset). Among those studies with more rigorous diet and sleep measurements, such as dietary recalls and actigraphy, associations between DII/E-DII and sleep outcomes were stronger and more consistent compared to studies using primarily subjective assessments. More rigorous measurement of diet and sleep, especially those relating to sleep stage structure, should be considered in future studies with prospective designs.

Abstract
Background Excessive inflammation during pregnancy has been linked to adverse long-term health outcomes for both mothers and their children. One such outcome is maternal cardiometabolic dysfunction. The Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index is a method of scoring the overall inflammatory potential of the diet. Research on how the inflammatory potential of the maternal diet during pregnancy affects maternal cardiometabolic factors is limited. Objective We investigated if the maternal Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index was associated with maternal cardiometabolic factors during pregnancy. Study design This is a secondary analysis of 518 individuals who participated in the ROLO (Randomized cOntrol trial of a LOw glycemic index diet in pregnancy) study. Maternal Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index scores were calculated in early (12-14 weeks' gestation) and late pregnancy (34 weeks' gestation) using data collected from 3-day food diaries. Body mass index, blood pressure, fasting lipid profiles, glucose levels, and HOMA1-IR were obtained in early and late pregnancy. Multiple linear regression examined associations between early-pregnancy Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index and early and late maternal cardiometabolic markers. In addition, the relationship between late-pregnancy Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index and late cardiometabolic factors was explored. Regression models were adjusted for maternal ethnicity, maternal age at delivery, education level, smoking status, and original randomized control trial group allocation. In regression models examining late-pregnancy Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index with late lipids, change in lipid level from early to late pregnancy was also adjusted for. Results Women's mean (standard deviation) age at delivery was 32.8 (±4.01) years, with median (interquartile range) body mass index of 24.45 (23.34-28.20) kg/m2. Mean (standard deviation) Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index was 0.59 (±1.60) in early pregnancy and 0.67 (±1.59) in late pregnancy. In adjusted linear regression analysis, first-trimester maternal Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index was positively associated with maternal body mass index (B=0.007; 95% confidence interval, 0.003-0.011; P=.001), early-pregnancy cardiometabolic markers including total cholesterol (B=0.155; 95% confidence interval, 0.061-0.249; P=.001), triglycerides (B=0.043; 95% confidence interval, 0.005-0.080; P=.03), low-density lipoproteins (B=0.129; 95% confidence interval, 0.049-0.209; P=.002), and diastolic blood pressure (B=0.538; 95% confidence interval, 0.070-1.006; P=.02), and late-pregnancy cardiometabolic markers including total cholesterol (B=0.127; 95% confidence interval, 0.012-0.243; P=.01) and low-density lipoproteins (B=0.110; 95% confidence interval, 0.010-0.209; P=.03). In the third trimester, Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index was associated with late-pregnancy diastolic blood pressure (B=0.624; 95% confidence interval, 0.103-1.145; P=.02), HOMA1-IR (B=0.030; 95% confidence interval, 0.005-0.054; P=.02), and glucose (B=0.003; 95% confidence interval, 0.003-0.034; P=.03). No associations were observed between third-trimester Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index and late-pregnancy lipid profiles. Conclusion Maternal diets with a higher Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index, which were low in anti-inflammatory foods and rich in proinflammatory foods, were associated with increased levels of cardiometabolic health risk factors in pregnancy. Promoting dietary intakes that have a lower inflammatory potential may support more favorable maternal cardiometabolic profiles during pregnancy.

Relationship between the Dietary Inflammatory Index Score and Cytokine Levels in Chinese Pregnant Women during the Second and Third Trimesters. Nutrients 2022; 15:nu15010194. Abstract
The impact of dietary inflammatory potential on serum cytokine concentrations in second and third trimesters of Chinese pregnant women is not clear. A total of 175 pregnant women from the Tianjin Maternal and Child Health Education and Service Cohort (TMCHESC) were included. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was calculated based on 24-h food records. Serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in the second and third trimesters were measured. The mean DII scores (mean ± SD) were -0.07 ± 1.65 and 0.06 ± 1.65 in the second and third trimesters, respectively. In the third trimester, IL-1β (p = 0.039) and MCP-1 (p = 0.035) levels decreased and then increased with increasing DII scores. IL-10 concentrations decreased in pregnant women whose DII scores increased between the second and third trimesters (p = 0.011). Thiamin and vitamin C were negatively correlated with MCP-1 (β = -0.879, and β = -0.003) and IL-6 (β = -0.602, and β = -0.002) levels in the third trimester. In conclusion, the DII score had a U-shaped association with cytokine levels during the third trimester. Changes in DII scores between the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were correlated with cytokine levels during the third trimester.

Abstract
Promoting a healthy diet is a relevant strategy for preventing non-communicable diseases. This study aims to evaluate the impact of an innovative tool, the SAlBi educa nutrition app, in primary healthcare dietary counseling to improve dietary profiles as well as adherence to the Mediterranean diet. A multi-center randomized control trial comprising 104 participants was performed. Both control (n = 49) and intervention (n = 55) groups attended four once-weekly sessions focusing on healthy eating habits and physical activity, over one month. As well as attending the meetings, the intervention group used the app, which provides self-monitoring and tailored dietary advice based on the Mediterranean diet model. In a second intervention (one arm trial), the potential of SAlBi educa was evaluated for three months during the COVID-19 pandemic. At 4 weeks, the intervention group had significantly increased their carbohydrate intake (7.7% (95% CI: 0.16 to 15.2)) and decreased their total fat intake (−5.7% (95% CI: −10.4 to −1.15)) compared to the control group. Significant differences were also found for carbohydrates (3.5% (95% CI: −1.0 to 5.8)), total fats (−5.9% (95% CI: −8.9 to −3.0)), fruits and vegetables (266.3 g/day (95% CI: 130.0 to 402.6)), legumes (7.7g/day (95% CI: 0.2 to 15.1)), starchy foods (36.4 g/day (95% CI: 1.1 to 71.7)), red meat (−17.5 g/day (95% CI: −34.0 to −1.1)), and processed meat (−6.6 g/day (95% CI: −13.1 to −0.1)) intakes during the COVID-19 pandemic. SAlBi educa is a useful tool to support nutrition counseling in primary healthcare, including in special situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Trial registration: ISRCTN57186362.

Abstract
Background Many behavior-change interventions focused on nutrition and physical activity (PA) have been implemented to prevent disease and promote optimal health. Purpose This study examined changes in PA with Energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII™) and chronic disease risk factors in participants of a multicomponent intervention. Methods Data from the Inflammation Management Intervention (IMAGINE) were used. Participants self-selected into the intervention or control group. At baseline and 12 weeks (post-intervention), participants completed three unannounced 24-hour dietary recalls (24HR), anthropometric measures (height, weight), and a dual x-ray absorptiometry scan. PA was measured using Sensewear® armbands. E-DII scores were calculated from the 24HR. Descriptive statistics and t-tests summarized variables and multiple regression assessed relationships between PA and body mass index (BMI), total body fat percent, and E-DII scores. Results Intervention participants increased moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and lowered BMI, total body fat, and E-DII scores compared to controls. Every 10-minute increase in post-intervention MVPA was associated with 1.6 kg/m2 lower BMI (p<0.01) and 2.4% lower body fat percent (p<0.01) among control participants, after adjusting for covariates. Every 10-minute increase in post-intervention MVPA was associated with 0.3 lower (i.e., less inflammatory) post-intervention E-DII (p=0.01) scores among intervention participants, after adjusting for covariates. Conclusion Participants who changed dietary intake changed PA. While changes were in expected directions, this intervention's emphasis on dietary behaviors compared to PA may have attenuated the relationship between PA and study outcomes.

Abstract
A lot of evidence shows that inflammation is related to the development of depression. However, the heterogeneity of depression hinders efforts to understand, prevent and treat this disease. The purpose of this comprehensive review is to summarize the links between inflammation and the established core features of depression, which show more homogeneity than the syndrome itself: overreaction to negative information, changes in reward processing, and cognitive control decline, and somatic syndrome. For each core feature, we first briefly outline its relevance to depression and neurobiological basis, and then review the evidence to investigate the potential role of inflammation. We mainly focus on the discovery of the experimental paradigm of exogenous inflammation. We concluded that inflammation may play a role in overreaction to negative information, altered reward responses, and physical symptoms. There is less evidence to support the effect of inflammation on cognitive control by standard neuropsychological measures. Finally, we discussed the implications for future research and recommendations on how to test the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of heterogeneous mental illness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To ascertain which of the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) 2010, Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) best predicted BMI and waist-to-hip circumference ratio (WHR). DESIGN Body size was measured at baseline (1990-1994) and in 2003-2007. Diet was assessed at baseline using a FFQ, along with age, sex, socio-economic status, smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity and country of birth. Regression coefficients and 95 % CI for the association of baseline dietary scores with follow-up BMI and WHR were generated using multivariable linear regression, adjusting for baseline body size, confounders and energy intake. SETTING Population-based cohort in Melbourne, Australia. PARTICIPANTS Included were data from 11 030 men and 16 774 women aged 40-69 years at baseline. RESULTS Median (IQR) follow-up was 11·6 (10·7-12·8) years. BMI and WHR at follow-up were associated with baseline DII® (Q5 v. Q1 (BMI 0·41, 95 % CI 0·21, 0·61) and WHR 0·009, 95 % CI 0·006, 0·013)) and AHEI (Q5 v. Q1 (BMI -0·51, 95 % CI -0·68, -0·35) and WHR -0·011, 95 % CI -0·013, -0·008)). WHR, but not BMI, at follow-up was associated with baseline MDS (Group 3 most Mediterranean v. G1 (BMI -0·05, 95 % CI -0·23, 0·13) and WHR -0·004, 95 % CI -0·007, -0·001)). Based on Akaike's Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion statistics, AHEI was a stronger predictor of body size than the other diet scores. CONCLUSIONS Poor quality or pro-inflammatory diets predicted overall and central obesity. The AHEI may provide the best way to assess the obesogenic potential of diet.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW It is accepted that several chronic diseases are associated with inflammation. Dietary habits and the consumption of certain nutrients have been shown to influence inflammation, reflected by inflammatory cytokines. In this narrative review, we discuss currently developed tools to assess the inflammatory potential of diets and compare them with established tools. RECENT FINDINGS Four new indices were recently developed. The Inflammatory Score of the Diet is a modified version of the established Dietary Inflammatory Index. The novel Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index works without previous dietary intake assessment and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet Index was specifically developed in a northern European population. The Dietary and Lifestyle Inflammation Scores addresses additional confounders. The informative value of dietary indices relies on the accuracy and completeness of dietary intake assessment. SUMMARY Dietary inflammatory indices are important tools to assess, compare and validate the inflammatory potential of diets across populations without the need for biomarker assessments. They allow to investigate associations between an (anti)-inflammatory diet with disease risk and course. Although the Dietary Inflammatory Index remains the most used index worldwide, currently developed indices allow more flexibility, have a different focus or simplify assessment. Additional foods, that were recently shown to modulate inflammation, but are not (fully) considered yet, may deserve more attention in the future.

Effect of an Antenatal Lifestyle Intervention on Dietary Inflammatory Index and Its Associations with Maternal and Fetal Outcomes: A Secondary Analysis of the PEARS Trial. Abstract
We investigated the effect of an antenatal lifestyle intervention of a low-glycaemic index (GI) diet and physical activity on energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DIITM) and explored its relationship with maternal and child health in women with overweight and obesity. This was a secondary analysis of 434 mother−child pairs from the Pregnancy Exercise and Nutrition Study (PEARS) trial in Dublin, Ireland. E-DIITM scores were calculated for early (10–16 weeks) and late (28 weeks) pregnancy. Outcomes included lipids, inflammation markers, insulin resistance, mode of delivery, infant size, pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes. T-tests were used to assess changes in E-DIITM. Chi-square, correlations, and multiple regression were employed to investigate relationships with outcomes. The mean (SD) age of participants was 32.45 (4.29) years with median (IQR) BMI 28.25 (26.70, 31.34) kg/m2. There was no change in E-DIITM in the controls (−0.14 (1.19) vs. −0.07 (1.09), p = 0.465) but E-DIITM reduced by 10% after the intervention (0.01 (1.07) vs −0.75 (1.05), p < 0.001). No associations were found between early pregnancy E-DIITM and maternal and child outcomes, except for increased odds of adverse cardiometabolic phenotype in women who delivered male (OR = 2.29, p = 0.010) but not female infants (OR = 0.99, p = 0.960). A low-GI antenatal intervention can reduce the inflammatory potential of diets. Sex differences should be explored further in future research.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Non-pharmacological sleep interventions may improve sleep profiles without the side-effects observed with many pharmacological sleep aids. The objective of this research was to examine the association between sleep and inflammation and to examine how changes in dietary inflammatory potential influence changes in sleep. METHODS The Inflammation Management Intervention Study (IMAGINE), which was a dietary intervention designed to lower inflammation, provided access to 24-h dietary recalls (24HR), objectively measured sleep using SensewearTM armbands, and a range of self-reported demographics, health histories, lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial metrics, anthropometric measurements, and inflammatory biomarkers. Dietary Inflammatory Index® (DII®) scores were calculated from three unannounced 24HR-derived estimated intakes of whole foods and micro and macronutrients over a 2-week period at baseline and post-intervention (i.e. month 3). Statistical analyses primarily utilized linear regression. RESULTS At baseline, for every 1-min increase in sleep onset latency, tumor necrosis factor-α increased by 0.015 pg/mL (±0.008, p = 0.05). Every one-percentage increase in sleep efficiency was associated with decreased C-reactive protein (CRP) of -0.088 mg/L (±0.032, p = 0.01). Every 1-min increase in wake-after-sleep-onset (WASO) increased both CRP and interleukin-6. Compared to participants with pro-inflammatory DII changes over 3 months, those with anti-inflammatory changes decreased WASO (0 vs. -25 min, respectively, p < 0.01) and improved sleep efficiency (-2.1% vs. +2.6%, respectively, p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Non-pharmacological treatments, such as anti-inflammatory diets, may improve sleep in some adults. Future research involving dietary treatments to improve sleep should not only focus on the general population, but also in those commonly experiencing co-morbid sleep complaints. Abstract
There is growing evidence of the dietary impact on obesity-induced low-grade chronic inflammation and the associated chronic non-communicable diseases modification. We determined changes in body composition and cardiometabolic and inflammatory status of participants with obesity after 24 weeks of a dietary intervention based on an energy-reduced anti-inflammatory diet and examined the relationship of these changes with changes in the inflammatory potential of the diet. The anthropometric and body composition parameters of 81 participants (average age of 43 years, 74 women) were assessed. Metabolic status was determined using the glycemic and lipid statuses, and the cardiometabolic index and inflammatory status were determined using the concentration of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). The inflammatory potential of the diet was assessed using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®). Intervention with an anti-inflammatory diet resulted in a significant reduction in body weight and visceral adipose tissue and caused improvements in the participants’ cardiometabolic and inflammatory statuses. The anti-inflammatory diet was shown to be effective regarding obesity management. The study data could advance current scientific knowledge in the field of inflammation and diet, provide guidelines for obesity management, and find its application in routine clinical practice.

Abstract
A pro-inflammatory diet may have an adverse influence on stress and inflammatory biomarker levels among college students. The dietary inflammatory index (DII®) is a tool used to assess the inflammatory potential of a diet. However, evidence for the association between DII and stress is limited. We examined the association between energy-adjusted DII (E-DIITM), high sensitivity-C-reactive protein [hs-CRP], and stress among female college students. This cross-sectional study included 401 randomly selected female students, aged 19–35 years. Data collection included blood, anthropometric measurements, a healthy-history questionnaire, the perceived stress scale (PSS-10), the Saudi food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and E-DII. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between FFQ-derived E-DII score, hs-CRP, and PSS. A higher E-DII score per 1SD (1.8) was associated with a 2.4-times higher PSS score (95% CI: 1.8, 3.1). Higher hs-CRP per 1SD (3.3 mg/L) was associated with a 0.9 (95% CI: 0.7–1.1) times higher PSS score, independent of lifestyle and dietary factors. Our findings indicate that pro-inflammatory diets were highly prevalent among Saudi college students and were associated with higher stress levels. Consideration of the role of stress and focusing on anti-inflammatory foods may be key for healthier dietary habits.

Abstract
Performing yoga in a heated environment (HY) is a popular exercise mode purported to improve range of motion (ROM), body composition, and aerobic fitness. The purpose of this investigation was to compare a session of HY to room temperature yoga (RTY) with regards to ROM, oxygen consumption, caloric expenditure, and biomarkers of acute stress and inflammation. Sixteen experienced yoga practitioners (F14, M2; 40 ± 11yr; 22.6 ± 1.8 kg/m2) completed a 1-hour standardized Bikram sequence in HY (105°F, 40°C) and RTY (74°F, 23.3°C) conditions (order of conditions randomized, humidity standardized at 40%). Intra-exercise metabolic gas exchange and heart rate (HR) was monitored using a metabolic cart. ROM measures were taken pre and post-exercise at the elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee. Cytokines interleukin 6,10 (IL-6, IL-10) and tumor-necrosis-factor alpha (TNF-α) were analyzed from blood samples collected pre- and 30-minutes post-exercise. Intra-exercise metabolic gas exchange and heart rate (HR) was monitored using a metabolic cart. Both bouts elicited similar acute changes in ROM although HY elicited a greater increase in hip abduction (RTYΔ° = 2.3 ± 1.3|HYΔ° = 6.6 ± 1.5; p < 0.05). Mean VO2, peak VO2, %VO2max, HR, and kcal expenditure did not differ between conditions. RER was lower during the HY (RTY = 0.95 ± 0.02| HY = 0.89 ± 0.02; p < 0.05) with a concomitant elevation in fat oxidation (RTY = 0.05 ± 0.01|HY = 0.09 ± 0.01, g·min-1; p < 0.05) and decrease in carbohydrate oxidation (RTY = 0.51 ± 0.04|HY = 0.44 ± 0.03, g·min-1; p < 0.05). Serum IL-6 was increased (15.5 ± 8.0-fold) following HY only (p < 0.05). HY does not significantly elevate aerobic energy cost compared to RTY but may acutely increase fat substrate utilization and hip ROM. Future studies remain needed to establish dose-response relationships for including HY or RTY into well-rounded fitness programs.

Abstract
An anti-inflammatory dietary intervention called the Inflammation Management Intervention (IMAGINE) was adapted to emphasize watermelon due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This pilot study (n = 23) tested the effect of a watermelon-enhanced IMAGINE intervention (n = 15) on body habitus and markers of inflammation and metabolism. This 3-month self-selection trial, consisting of weekly in-person classes and online education for 12 weeks, focused on incorporating watermelon into an already anti-inflammatory diet. Controls (n = 8) received basic health education via email and blogs. Measurements, including diet, anthropometrics, actigraphy, and a blood draw, were made at baseline and immediately postintervention. Linear regression analyses were conducted using intervention status as the main exposure. Post hoc analyses then ignored intervention assignment and grouped participants based on their change in their energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DIITM) score. There were no group-by-time interactions for any of the studied outcomes. However, some intervention participants’ diets became more proinflammatory, and several control participants’ diets became more anti-inflammatory. Those participants below the median of E-DII change (ie, more anti-inflammatory changes) showed reductions in body fat percent (–1.27% vs +0.90%, respectively, P = .01), body mass index (–0.66 vs +0.38 kg/m2, respectively, P = .06) and body weight (–0.99 vs +0.54 kg, respectively, P = .08) compared to those above the median of E-DII change. This study demonstrates that individuals who adopt a more anti-inflammatory diet containing watermelon will have improvements in body anthropometrics. Future studies should focus on increasing adherence and compliance to intervention prescriptions, exploring options to extend interventions to evaluate long-term changes, and further examining changes in inflammatory biomarkers.
