Multimodal representations of transfer learning with snake optimization algorithm on bone marrow cell classification using biomedical histopathological images

Bone marrow (BM) plays a crucial role in the hematopoietic process, producing all of the body's blood cells and maintaining the overall immune and health system. Red and yellow BM are the two various kinds of BM. A comprehensive identification of these cells assists in the primary and precise recognition of these disorders. The recognition and identification of BM cells are crucial bases for haematology diagnostics. Physical study of BM detection and classification presently performed in medical laboratories can be primarily insufficient owing to various factors, such as prolonged and challenging. Recently, with the fast growth of deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) methods, object detection methods have been progressively used for cell detection. DL is a secondary domain of artificial intelligence (AI) methods able to spontaneously assess delicate graphical features to create exact predictions that have been newly popularized in various imaging-related tasks. This study proposes a Multimodal Transfer Learning with Snake Optimization on Bone Marrow Cell Classification (MTLSO-BMCC) technique using biomedical histopathological images. The main intention of the MTLSO-BMCC technique is to identify and classify BM cells utilizing HI. To achieve this, the presented MTLSO-BMCC method initially performs image preprocessing using a median filter (MF) for noise removal. Besides, the multimodal feature extraction process is accomplished in InceptionV3, Deep SqueezeNet, and SE-DenseNet models. The presented MTLSO-BMCC technique employs the hybrid kernel extreme learning machine (HKELM) method for the BM classification method. Finally, the snake optimization algorithm (SOA) is implemented to tune the parameter of the HKELM model. A widespread MTLSO-BMCC methodology simulation is accomplished under the BM Cell Classification dataset. The experimental validation of the MTLSO-BMCC methodology portrayed a superior accuracy value of 98.60% over existing approaches.

Advancements in Multiple Myeloma Research: High-Throughput Sequencing Technologies, Omics, and the Role of Artificial Intelligence

Multiple myeloma is a complex and challenging type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow. In recent years, the development of advanced research techniques, such as omics approaches-which involve studying large sets of biological data like genes and proteins-and high-throughput sequencing technologies, has allowed researchers to analyze vast amounts of genetic information rapidly and gain new insights into the disease. Additionally, the advent of artificial intelligence tools has accelerated data analysis, enabling more accurate predictions and improved treatment strategies. This review aims to highlight recent research advances in multiple myeloma made possible by these novel techniques and to provide guidance for researchers seeking effective approaches in this field.

Application of AI-assisted MRI for the identification of surgical target areas in pediatric hip and periarticular infections

OBJECTIVE

To develop an AI-assisted MRI model to identify surgical target areas in pediatric hip and periarticular infections.

METHODS

A retrospective study was conducted on the pediatric patients with hip and periarticular infections who underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)examinations from January 2010 to January 2023 in three hospitals in China. A total of 7970 axial Short Tau Inversion Recovery (STIR) images were selected, and the corresponding regions of osteomyelitis (label 1) and abscess (label 2) were labeled using the Labelme software. The images were randomly divided into training group, validation group, and test group at a ratio of 7:2:1. A Mask R-CNN model was constructed and optimized, and the performance of identifying label 1 and label 2 was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Calculation of the average time it took for the model and specialists to process an image in the test group. Comparison of the accuracy of the model in the interpretation of MRI images with four orthopaedic surgeons, with statistical significance set at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

A total of 275 patients were enrolled, comprising 197 males and 78 females, with an average age of 7.10 ± 3.59 years, ranging from 0.00 to 14.00 years. The area under curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1 score for the model to identify label 1 were 0.810, 0.976, 0.995, 0.969, 0.922, and 0.957, respectively. The AUC, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1 score for the model to identify label 2 were 0.890, 0.957, 0.969, 0.915, 0.976, and 0.972, respectively. The model demonstrated a significant speed advantage, taking only 0.2 s to process an image compared to average 10 s required by the specialists. The model identified osteomyelitis with an accuracy of 0.976 and abscess with an accuracy of 0.957, both statistically better than the four orthopaedic surgeons, P < 0.05.

CONCLUSION

The Mask R-CNN model is reliable for identifying surgical target areas in pediatric hip and periarticular infections, offering a more convenient and rapid option. It can assist unexperienced physicians in pre-treatment assessments, reducing the risk of missed and misdiagnosis.

Deep learning enhances acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosis and classification using bone marrow images

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) poses a significant health challenge, particularly in pediatric cases, requiring precise and rapid diagnostic approaches. This comprehensive review explores the transformative capacity of deep learning (DL) in enhancing ALL diagnosis and classification, focusing on bone marrow image analysis. Examining ten studies conducted between 2013 and 2023 across various countries, including India, China, KSA, and Mexico, the synthesis underscores the adaptability and proficiency of DL methodologies in detecting leukemia. Innovative DL models, notably Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with Cat-Boosting, XG-Boosting, and Transfer Learning techniques, demonstrate notable approaches. Some models achieve outstanding accuracy, with one CNN reaching 100% in cancer cell classification. The incorporation of novel algorithms like Cat-Swarm Optimization and specialized CNN architectures contributes to superior classification accuracy. Performance metrics highlight these achievements, with models consistently outperforming traditional diagnostic methods. For instance, a CNN with Cat-Boosting attains 100% accuracy, while others hover around 99%, showcasing DL models' robustness in ALL diagnosis. Despite acknowledged challenges, such as the need for larger and more diverse datasets, these findings underscore DL's transformative potential in reshaping leukemia diagnostics. The high numerical accuracies accentuate a promising trajectory toward more efficient and accurate ALL diagnosis in clinical settings, prompting ongoing research to address challenges and refine DL models for optimal clinical integration.
