Abstract
Physicians should consider non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) in the differential diagnosis of cellulitis complicated by sepsis, especially in immunocompromised patients when potential exposure exists. Due to the pathogen's potential for severe infections and rising incidence from environmental changes, we emphasize the need for increased awareness and appropriate treatment guidelines.

Abstract
Cholera is highly endemic in many sub-Saharan African countries. The bacterium Vibrio cholerae is responsible for this severe dehydrating diarrheal disease that accounts for over 100,000 deaths each year globally. In recent years, the pathogen has been found to invade intestinal layers and translocate into the bloodstream of humans. The non-toxigenic strains of V. cholerae (non-O1/O139), also known as NOVC, which do not cause epidemic or pandemic cases of cholera, are the major culprits of V. cholerae bacteremia. In non-cholera-endemic regions, clinical reports on NOVC infection have been noted over the past few decades, particularly in Europe and America. Although low-middle-income countries are most susceptible to cholera infections because of challenges with access to clean water and inappropriate sanitation issues, just a few cases of V. cholerae bloodstream infections have been reported. The lack of evidence-based research and surveillance of V. cholerae bacteremia in Africa may have significant clinical implications. This commentary summarizes the existing knowledge on the host risk factors, pathogenesis, and diagnostics of NOVC bacteremia.

Abstract
In recent years, the number of foodborne infections with non-O1 and non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) has increased worldwide. These have ranged from sporadic infection cases to localized outbreaks. The majority of case reports describe self-limiting gastroenteritis. However, severe gastroenteritis and even cholera-like symptoms have also been described. All reported diarrheal cases can be traced back to the consumption of contaminated seafood. As climate change alters the habitats and distribution patterns of aquatic bacteria, there is a possibility that the number of infections and outbreaks caused by Vibrio spp. will further increase, especially in countries where raw or undercooked seafood is consumed or clean drinking water is lacking. Against this background, this review article focuses on a possible infection pathway and how NOVC can survive in the human host after oral ingestion, colonize intestinal epithelial cells, express virulence factors causing diarrhea, and is excreted by the human host to return to the environment.

Abstract
The increasing incidence of non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) has been observed worldwide. However, septicemia caused by NOVC remains a rare condition that has received limited attention. Currently, there are no established treatment guidelines for bloodstream infections caused by NOVC, and the understanding of this condition mainly relies on individual case reports. Although NOVC bacteremia can be fatal in a small percentage of cases, knowledge about its microbiological features remains limited. Here, we present a case of V. cholerae septicemia caused by NOVC in a 46-year-old man with chronic viral hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. The isolated strain, named V. cholerae VCH20210731 and classified as a new sequence type (ST), ST1553, was found to be susceptible to most of the antimicrobial agents tested. O-antigen serotyping of V. cholerae VCH20210731 revealed that it belonged to serotype Ob5. Interestingly, the ctxAB genes, which are typically associated with V. cholerae, were absent in VCH20210731. However, the strain possessed 25 other potential virulence genes, such as hlyA, luxS, hap, and rtxA. The resistome of V. cholerae VCH20210731 included several genes, including qnrVC4, crp, almG, and parE. Nevertheless, susceptibility testing demonstrated that the isolate was susceptible to most of the antimicrobial agents tested. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the closest strain to VCH20210731 was strain 120 from Russia, differing by 630 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Our findings contribute to the understanding of the genomic epidemiological characteristics and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of this invasive bacterial pathogen. IMPORTANCE This study highlights the discovery of a novel ST1553 V. cholerae strain in China, providing valuable insights into the genomic epidemiology and global transmission dynamics of V. cholerae. It is important to note that clinical presentations of NOVC bacteremia can vary significantly, and the isolates demonstrate genetic diversity. Consequently, health care professionals and public health experts should remain vigilant about the potential for infection with this pathogen, particularly considering the elevated prevalence of liver disease in China.

Abstract
Background The noncholera Vibrio spp. which cause vibriosis are abundantly found in our water ecosystem. These bacteria could negatively affect both humans and animals. To date, there is a paucity of information available on the existence and pathogenicity of this particular noncholera Vibrio spp. in Malaysia in comparison to their counterpart, Vibrio cholera. Methods In this study, we extracted retrospective data from Malaysian surveillance database. Analysis was carried out using WHONET software focusing noncholera Vibrio spp. including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio fluvialis, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio hollisae (Grimontia hollisae), Vibrio mimicus, Vibrio metschnikovii, and Vibrio furnissii. Results Here, we report the first distribution and prevalence of these species isolated in Malaysia together with the antibiotic sensitivity profile based on the species. We found that V. parahaemolyticus is the predominant species isolated in Malaysia. Noticeably, across the study period, V. fluvialis is becoming more prevalent, as compared to V. parahaemolyticus. In addition, this study also reports the first isolation of pathogenic V. furnissii from stool in Malaysia. Conclusion These data represent an important step toward understanding the potential emergence of noncholera Vibrio spp. outbreaks.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae is a bacterium ubiquitous in aquatic environments which can cause widespread infection worldwide. V. cholerae gradually became a rare species of bacteria in clinical microbiology laboratories with the control of the cholera epidemic. In this study, we isolated a V. cholerae strain, named VCHL017, from the blood of an elderly patient without gastrointestinal symptoms. The patient had a history of hookworm infection and multiple myeloma. Furthermore, she was immunocompromised, and received long-term chemotherapy and antimicrobial agents. VCHL017 was inoculated on blood agar and thiosulfate citrate bile salt sucrose plates (TCBS) to observe morphological characteristics. Then this isolate was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for cefazolin, ceftazidime, cefepime, meropenem, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, and gentamicin of VCHL017 were determined by the microbroth dilution method. PCR and serum agglutination tests were used to determine whether the serogroups of the isolate belonged to the O1/O139 and cholera toxin encoding genes. Finally, the genomic features and phylogeny of VCHL017 were analyzed by whole genome sequencing (WGS). VCHL017 was a non-O1/O139 V cholerae strain that did not carry the ctxA gene. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed that VCHL017 was susceptive to chloramphenicol and tetracycline. Although it did not carry the genes encoding the cholera toxin, WGS indicated that VCHL017 carried a variety of other virulence factors. By calculating the average nucleotide identity (ANI), we precisely identified the species of VCHL017 as V. cholerae. There are also A171S and A202S missense mutations in gyrA of VCHL017. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that VCHL017 was closely related to V. cholerae strains isolated from aquatic environments. Our results suggest that continuous monitoring is necessary for non-O1/O139 V cholerae strains isolated from outside the digestive tract, which could be pathogenic through multiple virulence factors.

Abstract
Global ocean warming results in an increase of infectious diseases including an elevated emergence of Vibrio spp. in Northern Europe. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported annual periods of high to very high risks of infection with Vibrio spp. during summer months along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. Based on those facts, the risk of Vibrio infections associated with recreational bathing in European coastal waters increases. To obtain an overview of the seasonal and spatial distribution of potentially human pathogenic Vibrio spp. at German coasts, this study monitored V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus at seven recreational bathing areas from 2017 to 2018, including the heat wave event in summer 2018. The study shows that all three Vibrio species occurred in water and sediment samples at all sampling sites. Temperature was shown to be the main driving factor of Vibrio abundance, whereas Vibrio community composition was mainly modulated by salinity. A species-specific rapid increase was observed at water temperatures above 10°C, reaching the highest detection numbers during the heat wave event with abundances of 4.5 log10 CFU+1/100 ml of seawater and 6.5 log10 CFU+1/100 g of sediment. Due to salinity, the dominant Vibrio species found in North Sea samples was V. parahaemolyticus, whereas V. vulnificus was predominantly detected in Baltic Sea samples. Most detections of V. cholerae were associated with estuarine samples from both seas. Vibrio spp. concentrations in sediments were up to three log higher compared to water samples, indicating that sediments are an important habitat for Vibrio spp. to persist in the environment. Antibiotic resistances were found against beta-lactam antibiotics (ampicillin 31%, cefazolin 36%, and oxacillin and penicillin 100%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (45%). Moreover, isolates harboring pathogenicity-associated genes such as trh for V. parahaemolyticus as well as vcg, cap/wcv, and the 16S rRNA-type B variant for V. vulnificus were detected. All sampled V. cholerae isolates were identified as non-toxigenic non-O1/non-O139 serotypes. To sum up, increasing water temperatures at German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts provoke elevated Vibrio numbers and encourage human recreational water activities, resulting in increased exposure rates. Owing to a moderate Baltic Sea salinity, the risk of V. vulnificus infections is of particular concern.

Abstract
Somatic antigen agglutinable type-1/139 Vibrio cholerae (SAAT-1/139-Vc) members or O1/O139 V. cholerae have been described by various investigators as pathogenic due to their increasing virulence potential and production of choleragen. Reported cholera outbreak cases around the world have been associated with these choleragenic V. cholerae with high case fatality affecting various human and animals. These virulent Vibrio members have shown genealogical and phylogenetic relationship with the avirulent somatic antigen non-agglutinable strains of 1/139 V. cholerae (SANAS-1/139- Vc) or O1/O139 non-agglutinating V. cholerae (O1/O139-NAG-Vc). Reports on implication of O1/O139-NAGVc members in most sporadic cholera/cholera-like cases of diarrhea, production of cholera toxin and transmission via consumption and/or contact with contaminated water/seafood are currently on the rise. Some reported sporadic cases of cholera outbreaks and observed change in nature has also been tracable to these non-agglutinable Vibrio members (O1/O139-NAGVc) yet there is a sustained paucity of research interest on the non-agglutinable V. cholerae members. The emergence of fulminating extraintestinal and systemic vibriosis is another aspect of SANAS-1/139- Vc implication which has received low attention in terms of research driven interest. This review addresses the need to appraise and continually expand research based studies on the somatic antigen non-serogroup agglutinable type-1/139 V. cholerae members which are currently prevalent in studies of water bodies, fruits/vegetables, foods and terrestrial environment. Our opinion is amassed from interest in integrated surveillance studies, management/control of cholera outbreaks as well as diarrhea and other disease-related cases both in the rural, suburban and urban metropolis.

Abstract
Infectious human diseases acquired from bivalve shellfish consumption constitute a public health threat. These health threats are largely related to the filter-feeding phenomenon, by which bivalve organisms retain and concentrate pathogenic bacteria from their surrounding waters. Even after depuration, bivalve shellfish are still involved in outbreaks caused by pathogenic bacteria, which increases the demand for new and efficient strategies to control transmission of shellfish infection. Bacteriophage (or phage) therapy represents a promising, tailor-made approach to control human pathogens in bivalves, but its success depends on a deep understanding of several factors that include the bacterial communities present in the harvesting waters, the appropriate selection of phage particles, the multiplicity of infection that produces the best bacterial inactivation, chemical and physical factors, the emergence of phage-resistant bacterial mutants and the life cycle of bivalves. This review discusses the need to advance phage therapy research for bivalve decontamination, highlighting their efficiency as an antimicrobial strategy and identifying critical aspects to successfully apply this therapy to control human pathogens associated with bivalve consumption.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae is a pathogen known to cause the waterborne epidemic disease cholera. Overall, V. cholerae O1 or O139 strains produce the cholera toxin that cause gastroenteritis, resulting in watery diarrhea. Most of the enterocolitis caused by V. cholerae can be easily treated with fluid therapy and conservative care. However, V. cholerae non-O1/O139 strains can cause extraintestinal infections, such as wound infection or sepsis, in immunocompromised patients. The clinical course of these infections is very similar to that of V. vulnificus infection. We report about a 52-year-old man without previous underlying disease who was diagnosed with V. cholerae non-O1/O139 infection and died within 72 hours after admission to the intensive care unit.

Abstract
Non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) does not agglutinate with O1 and O139 antisera and can cause intestinal and extraintestinal infections in immunocompromised individuals. NOVC bacteremia has the highest mortality among NOVC infections, and the number of reports has increased in recent years. Nevertheless, some clinicians are poorly informed about this disease. Herein, we describe a documented case of NOVC bacteremia in a male patient with impaired liver function. Blood cultures revealed the presence of V. cholerae, but this strain showed self-coagulation on the serum agglutination test. To our knowledge, this phenomenon is unreported among cases of NOVC infections. This pathogen was finally confirmed as NOVC via PCR. Because the patient worked as a garbage transporter, he was likely infected after contact with contaminated water through a foot wound. The patient developed septic shock shortly after admission and ultimately died from the illness. This paper reviews 23 cases of NOVC bacteremia from 2015 to 2019. To improve the accuracy of identifying NOVC and analyze its virulence factors, relevant detection methods were reviewed and analyzed.

Abstract
Non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) are genetically diverse strains that are generally non-pathogenic in healthy hosts. In immunocompromised patients or those with liver disease, NOVC have been shown to cause gastroenteritis, wound infections or sepsis and are often associated with high mortality rates. We report a case of a patient with liver cirrhosis and chronic venous insufficiency who was found to have NOVC bacteremia. The patient had recently visited Florida, USA but had no seafood consumption or exposure to aquatic environments. The patient was managed with antimicrobials, with a favorable outcome.

Abstract
More clinical infections with non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae have been recently reported. These pathogens usually do not cause the epidemic and pandemic cases of cholera seen with choleragenic vibrios. However, they can still cause intestinal as well as extra-intestinal disease and can be associated with significant mortality. Herein, we present the first case of non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae septicemia reported in Lebanon since the beginning of the Lebanese waste crisis.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae non-O1 serogroup (VCNO) bacteraemia is a severe condition with a high case-fatality rate. We report three cases diagnosed in the Netherlands, identified during a national microbiological congress, and provide a literature review on VCNO bacteraemia. A search strategy including synonyms for 'VCNO' and 'bacteraemia' was applied to PubMed, Medline, Web of Science and Embase databases. The three cases were reported in elderly male patients after fish consumption and/or surface water contact. The literature search yielded 82 case reports on 90 cases and six case series. Thirty case reports were from Asia (30/90; 33%), concerned males (67/90; 74%), and around one third (38/90; 42%) involved a history of alcohol abuse and/or liver cirrhosis The presenting symptom often was gastroenteritis (47/90; 52%) which occurred after seafood consumption in 32% of the cases (15/47).Aside from the most frequent symptom being fever, results of case series concurred with these findings. Published cases also included rare presentations e.g. endophthalmitis and neonatal meningitis. Based on the limited data available, cephalosporins seemed the most effective treatment. Although mainly reported in Asia, VCNO bacteraemia occurs worldwide. While some risk factors for VCNO were identified in this study, the source of infection remains often unclear. Clinical presentation may vary greatly and therefore a quick microbiological diagnosis is indispensable.

Abstract
We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg caused by Vibrio cholerae O8 in a 63-year-old immunocompetent man after he had been fishing in a lake on a Croatian island. The strain was cytotoxic, invasive and adhesive and contained a fragment of the gene for El Tor-like hemolysin (El Tor hlyA). After surgical and antibiotic treatment, the patient fully recovered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae can cause sporadic cases of gastroenteritis and extra-intestinal invasive infections, following exposure to contaminated seawater or freshwater or after consumption of raw seafood. Bacteremic infections with skin and soft tissue manifestations are uncommon and in most cases are associated with liver cirrhosis, haematologic malignancies, diabetes mellitus and other immunosuppressed conditions. METHODS The medical literature was reviewed and we found 47 published cases of non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae bacteremic skin and soft tissue infections. A fatal case of bacteremia with bullous cellulitis in a 43-year-old patient with liver cirrhosis is described, which is the first reported in Greece. RESULTS From January 1974 to May 2015, a total of 48 patients with non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae bacteremia with skin and soft tissue infections were reported. Males predominated. Liver cirrhosis, chronic liver disease and alcohol abuse were common comorbidities. The soft tissue lesions most commonly described were localised cellulitis, with or without bullous and haemorrhagic lesions (66.7%), while necrotising fasciitis was more rare (29.2%). Of the 48 patients with non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae bacteremic skin and soft tissue infections, 20 (41.7%) died despite treatment. CONCLUSION Although rarely encountered, non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae should be included in the differential diagnosis of bacteremic skin and soft tissue infections in patients with underlying illnesses and epidemiologic risk factors. Timely and appropriate antibiotic and surgical treatments are important in the management of the infection.

Abstract
Non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) are increasingly frequently observed ubiquitous microorganisms occasionally responsible for intestinal and extra-intestinal infections. Most cases involve self-limiting gastroenteritis or ear and wound infections in immunocompetent patients. Bacteraemia, which have been described in patients with predisposing factors, are rare and poorly known, both on the clinical and therapeutic aspects. We describe a case of NOVC bacteraemia and a systematic literature review in PubMed conducted up to November 2014 using a combination of the following search terms: “Vibrio cholerae non-O1” and “bacter(a)emia”. The case was a 70 year-old healthy male subject returning from Senegal and suffering from NOVC bacteraemia associated with liver abscesses. Disease evolution was favourable after 2 months’ therapy (ceftriaxone then ciprofloxacin). Three hundred and fifty cases of NOVC bacteraemia have been identified in the literature. The majority of patients were male (77 %), with a median age of 56 years and presenting with predisposing conditions (96 %), such as cirrhosis (55 %) or malignant disease (20 %). Diarrhoea was inconstant (42 %). Mortality was 33 %. The source of infection, identified in only 25 % of cases, was seafood consumption (54 %) or contaminated water (30 %). Practitioners should be aware of these infections, in order to warn patients with predisposing conditions, on the risk of ingesting raw or undercooked seafood or bathing in potentially infected waters.

Abstract
This retrospective case series identifies the largest cohort of non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae bacteraemia in an Australian population from 2000 to 2013. We examine the risk factors, epidemiology, clinical presentations and mortality of non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae bacteraemia in Victoria and compare them with published cases in the literature. This case series highlights the pathogenic potential of non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae and identifies possible associations with host (underlying chronic liver disease and malignancy) and environmental factors (contaminated water supply and raw seafood). Clinicians should be aware of the morbidity and mortality associated with invasive non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients.

Abstract
The innate immune response to Vibrio cholerae infection is poorly understood, but this knowledge is critical for the design of safe, effective vaccines. Using an adult mouse intestinal infection model, this study examines the contribution of neutrophils to host immunity, as well as the effect of cholera toxin and other secreted factors on this response. Depletion of neutrophils from mice with anti-Ly6G IA8 monoclonal antibody led to similar survival rates of mice infected with low or moderate doses of toxigenic V. cholerae El Tor O1. At a high dose, neutropenic mice showed increased rates of survival compared to neutrophil-replete animals. Expression of cholera toxin was found to be protective to the neutropenic host, and this phenotype can be replicated by the administration of purified toxin. Neutrophils do not effectively clear colonizing bacteria from the small intestine, nor do they alter induction of early immune-modulating signals. In both neutropenic and neutrophil-replete animals, the local response to infection is characterized by expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-10, and macrophage inflammatory protein 2 alpha (MIP-2). Overall, these data indicate that the innate immune response to toxigenic V. cholerae infection differs dramatically from the host response to nontoxigenic infection or vaccination, where neutrophils are protective to the host. In the absence of neutrophils, cholera toxin induces immunomodulatory effects that increase host survival. In cholera toxin-producing strains, similar to nontoxigenic infection, accessory toxins are critical to virulence, indicating that cholera toxin and the other secreted toxins modulate the host response by different mechanisms, with both contributing to bacterial persistence and virulence.

Abstract
A 49-year-old male with underlying liver disease presented with fever and signs of sepsis. Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae was isolated from his blood culture, which was positive for the hlyA and toxR genes. We report this fatal case of non-O1/non-O139 V. cholera sepsis and review the literature on non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae sepsis in patients with chronic liver disease.

Abstract
Bacteremia due to Vibrio cholerae non-O1 and non-O139 is a rare condition and potentially fatal. We report a case of bacteremia due to V. cholerae non-O1 and non-O139 in a Portuguese male with Hepatitis C cirrhosis, admitted due to acute diarrhea, after consuming shrimp. He had no recent travels. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of bacteremia due to V. cholerae non-O1 and non-O139 in Portugal.

Abstract
Cholera is classically considered a noninflammatory diarrheal disease, in comparison to invasive enteric organisms, although there is a low-level proinflammatory response during early infection with Vibrio cholerae and a strong proinflammatory reaction to live attenuated vaccine strains. Using an adult mouse intestinal infection model, this study examines the contribution of neutrophils to host defense to infection. Nontoxigenic El Tor O1 V. cholerae infection is characterized by the upregulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, and macrophage inflammatory protein 2 alpha in the intestine, indicating an acute innate immune response. Depletion of neutrophils from mice with anti-Ly6G IA8 monoclonal antibody led to decreased survival of mice. The role of neutrophils in protection of the host is to limit the infection to the intestine and control bacterial spread to extraintestinal organs. In the absence of neutrophils, the infection spread to the spleen and led to increased systemic levels of IL-1β and tumor necrosis factor alpha, suggesting the decreased survival in neutropenic mice is due to systemic shock. Neutrophils were found not to contribute to either clearance of colonizing bacteria or to alter the local immune response. However, when genes for secreted accessory toxins were deleted, the colonizing bacteria were cleared from the intestine, and this clearance is dependent upon neutrophils. Thus, the requirement for accessory toxins in virulence is negated in neutropenic mice, which is consistent with a role of accessory toxins in the evasion of innate immune cells in the intestine. Overall, these data support that neutrophils impact disease progression and suggest that neutrophil effectiveness can be manipulated through the deletion of accessory toxins.

Abstract
A gene associated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) transport was cloned from a local clinical Vibrio cholerae O1 strain of the Ogawa serotype by using the Lactococcus lactis nisin-controlled expression (NICE) system. The V. cholerae wzm gene, which codes for an integral membrane transporter protein, was expressed and targeted to the cytoplasmic membrane, and was crudely isolated through simple centrifugation and SDS solubilization. To examine seroreactivity of this construct, rabbits were orally fed with 10(9) cfu/ml of live, recombinant L. lactis carrying the wzm gene, induced with nisin prior to administration. Recombinant plasmids were retrieved from L. lactis cultured directly from stool samples of inoculated rabbits. Reverse-transcriptase PCR of wzm using the retrieved plasmids confirmed transcription of this gene, indicating viability and stability of the recombinants in vivo. The L. lactis-Wzm construct elicited substantial levels of IgG and sIgA, and challenge with virulent V. cholerae O1 evoked severe diarrhoea in the naive, non-immunised control group, but not in those fed with either recombinant or non-recombinant L. lactis. Oral administration with recombinant L. lactis expressing the V. cholerae wzm gene increases both systemic and mucosal immunity, whereas L. lactis itself appears capable of protecting against the diarrhoeal symptoms caused by V. cholerae. Wzm is a conserved membrane protein associated with the LPS endotoxin, and together with the food-grade L. lactis, represent an attractive target for the development of a safer, live anti-infective therapy against V. cholerae.

Abstract
Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are released from many Gram-negative bacteria. OMVs interact with and are taken up by human cells. We and others have now showed that OMVs contain peptidoglycan, which is sensed mainly by the pattern-recognition receptor NOD1 in the cytoplasm of host cells. Vibrio cholerae is clinically important as one of the causative agents of severe dehydrating diarrhea in humans. We showed that non-O1 non-O139 V. cholerae (NOVC) strains of V. cholera produce OMVs. Of note, we revealed that NOVC can evade NOD1-mediated immune surveillance by the quorum sensing machinery. Here we review these recent findings and discuss the relevance for our understanding of bacterial infections and innate immune responses.

Abstract
In this study 86 isolates of Vibrio cholerae were analysed for their adhesive properties and the presence of pathogenicity island genes. With the exception of three isolates, all of the other clinical isolates (92.5%) contained an intact TCP (toxin-co-regulated pilus) gene cluster. In contrast, 95% of all environmental non-O1-non-O139 isolates were negative for the TCP gene cluster. The majority of clinical isolates (82.5%) possessed the complete vibrio pathogenicity island (VPI) gene cluster and had a similar RFLP pattern, while only a single environmental strain possessed an almost complete VPI cluster (lacking 0.4 kb in the tcpA and toxT region). The result showed that the isolates with tcpA(+)/toxT(+) had a strong attachment for HT-29 and Vero cells, whereas isolates with tcpA(+)/toxT(-) or tcpA(-)/toxT(-) genomic characteristics showed no autoagglutination and weak attachment for the cell lines. Two environmental strains (tcpA(-)/toxT(-)) showed strong adhesive properties to the cell lines, indicating that non-fimbrial adhesive factors are involved in the environmental V. cholerae strains in the absence of TCP.

Abstract
We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Vibrio cholerae O137 in an immunocompromised 49-year-old man. The infection was acquired following a minor traumatic injury and exposure to seawater during the summer of 2009 in Italy. Although highly immunocompromised, the patient survived. The strain was cytotoxic, invasive, and adhesive and contained a fragment of the El Tor-like hemolysin (El Tor hlyA) gene.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae is causative agent of life threatening diarrheal disease, cholera. The toxin co-regulated pilus (TCP) is a critical colonization factor of V. cholerae and it also serves as receptor for CTXФ. In this study, we describe nucleotide sequence of four novel alleles of tcpA gene from toxigenic and non-toxigenic V. cholerae isolated from environmental sources. The phylogenetic analysis of tcpA revealed that it is related to tcpA of newly emerged O1 strain and unrelated to tcpA of wild type (classical and El Tor strains). All strains showed variant tcpA and also harbored intact Vibrio Pathogenicity Island (VPI). The expression of all variant alleles was demonstrated by RT-PCR.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae serogroups O1 or O139 are the aetiological agents of cholera. The pathogenicity of non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae is less well known. These worldwide bacteria are responsible for gastrointestinal infections or, more rarely, bacteraemia in patients with an underlying disease, leading to life-threatening complications. We report a case of non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae bacteraemia due to a haemolytic strain in a cirrhotic patient. Early antibiotherapy allowed a good outcome. The aim of this case report is to underline the virulence of non-choleragenic Vibrio strains, possibly linked to haemolysin production, and the potential danger of consuming undercooked seafood or exposing wounds to sea water in cirrhotic patients.

Abstract
Vibrio cholerae are Gram-negative bacteria that are differentiated into O1/O139 and non-O1/non-O139 serogroups depending on their ability to agglutinate with specific antiserum. In contrast to non-O1/non-0139 Vibrio cholerae, which are more prone to invade the bloodstream, Vibrio cholerae O1 is rarely the cause of bacteremia. We report a case of O1 Vibrio cholera bacteremia and primary peritonitis in a patient with liver cirrhosis. The literature on the subject is also reviewed.

Abstract
Vibrio species are ubiquitous in the marine environment and can cause severe infections in cirrhotic patients. Patients with liver disease should be warned about the potential dangers of consuming raw or undercooked seafood, and avoiding exposure of wounds to seawater. We report a case of severe sepsis from Vibrio cholerae non-O1 in a patient with cirrhosis awaiting orthotopic liver transplant. This case is aimed to advise clinicians about the importance of V. cholerae subtypes, and non-cholera Vibrio species infections in cirrhotic patients, highlighting the need to educate these patients to stay away from undercooked seafood.
