Environmental factors influencing the soil-air partitioning of semi-volatile petroleum hydrocarbons: Laboratory measurements and optimization model

The soil-air partition coefficient (KSA) values are commonly utilized to examine the fate of organic contaminants in soils; however, their measurement has been lacking for semi-volatile petroleum hydrocarbons within soil contaminated by crude oil. This research utilized a solid-phase fugacity meter to determine the KSA values of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under crucial environmental conditions. The results showed a notable increase in KSA values with the extent of crude oil contamination in soil. Specifically, in the 3 % crude oil treatment, the KSA values for n-alkanes and PAHs increased by 1.16 and 0.66 times, respectively, compared to the 1 % crude oil treatment. However, the KSA values decreased with changes in temperature, water content, and particle size within the specified experimental range. Among these factors, temperature played a significant role. The KSA values for n-alkanes and PAHs decreased by 0.27-0.89 and 0.61-0.83 times, respectively, with a temperature increase from 5 °C to 35 °C. Moreover, the research identified that the molecular weight of n-alkanes and PAHs contributed to variations in KSA values under identical environmental factors. With an increase in temperature from 5 °C to 35 °C, the range of n-alkanes present in the air phase expanded from C11 to C34, and PAHs showed elevated levels of acenaphthene (ACE) and benzo (b) fluoranthene (BbFA). Furthermore, heightened water content and particle size were observed to facilitate the volatilization of low molecular weight petroleum hydrocarbons. The effect of environmental variables on soil-air partitioning was evaluated using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) model, resulting in the attainment of the lowest log KSA values. These results illustrate that soil-air partitioning is a complex process influenced by various factors. In conclusion, this study improves our comprehension and predictive capabilities concerning the behavior and fate of n-alkanes and PAHs within soil-air systems.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source analysis and ecological risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Bohai Bay, China

As a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), the spatial and temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seawater is important for environmental assessment. Surface water samples were collected from 35 stations during summer and 36 stations during autumn of 2020 in the Bohai Bay. The concentration, composition, distribution and sources of PCBs were analyzed to assess the ecological impact of PCBs. The average concentration of ∑18PCBs was 124.6 ng/L (range of 28.1-445.5 ng/L) in summer and 122.8 ng/L (range of 21.0-581.4 ng/L) in autumn. PCBs in surface seawater of the Bohai Bay showed high near-shore and low far-shore characteristics, indicating the serious influence of land-based sources such as port activities and river inputs. Proportion analysis showed that Tetra-PCBs and Penta-PCBs were the major constituents in most stations. It was assessed as moderate and high risk (MRQ > 0.1) by mixture risk quotient (MRQ) and concentration addition (CA) model in surface seawater of the Bohai Bay. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to explain the sources of PCBs in the Bohai Bay. PCBs in the Bohai Bay may come from commercial PCBs and their incineration products, municipal landfills, wood and coal combustion, and industrial activities, etc.

Spatial characteristics, sources and exposure risk of polychlorinated biphenyls in dusts and soils from an urban environment in the Niger Delta of Nigeria

Chlorinated organic compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are a threat to both humans and the environment because of their toxicity, persistence, and capacity for long-range atmospheric transport. The concentrations of 28 PCB congeners, including 12 dioxin-like and seven indicator PCBs, were investigated in soils, and indoor and outdoor dusts from Port Harcourt city, Nigeria, in order to evaluate the characteristic distribution patterns in these media, their sources, and possible risk. The PCB concentrations varied from 4.59 to 116 ng g^-1 for soils, and from 1.80 to 23.0 ng g^-1 and 2.73 to 57.4 ng g^-1 for indoor and outdoor dusts respectively. The sequence of PCB concentrations in these matrices was soil > outdoor dust > indoor dust. The composition of PCBs in these matrices indicated the prevalence of lower chlorinated PCBs in indoor and outdoor dusts, while the higher chlorinated congeners were dominant in soils. Di-PCBs were the predominant homologues in indoor dusts, while deca-PCBs were the most prevalent homologues in outdoor dusts and soils. The TEQ values of dioxin-like PCBs in 60 % of the soils, 100 % of the indoor dust, and 30 % of the outdoor dust were above the indicative value of 4 pg TEQ g^-1 established by the Canadian authority. The hazard index (HI) values for exposure of adults and children to PCBs in these media were mostly greater than one, while the total cancer risk (TCR) values exceeded the acceptable risk value of 10^-6, which indicate probable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks resulting from exposure to PCBs in these media. Source analysis for PCBs in these matrices shows that they originated from diverse sources.

Occurrence, source, ecological risk, and mitigation of phthalates (PAEs) in agricultural soils and the environment: A review

The widespread distribution of phthalates (PAEs) in agricultural soils is increasing drastically; however, the environmental occurrence and potential risk of PAEs in agricultural systems remain largely unreviewed. In this study, the occurrence, sources, ecotoxicity, exposure risks, and control measures of PAEs contaminants in agricultural soils are summarized, and it is concluded that PAEs have been widely detected and persist in the soil at concentrations ranging from a few μg/kg to tens of mg/kg, with spatial and vertical variations in China. Agrochemicals and atmospheric deposition have largely contributed to the elevated contamination status of PAEs in soils. In addition, PAEs cause multi-level hazards to soil organisms (survival, oxidative damage, genetic and molecular levels, etc.) and further disrupt the normal ecological functions of soil. The health hazards of PAEs to humans are mainly generated through dietary and non-dietary pathways, and children may be at a higher risk of exposure than adults. Improving the soil microenvironment and promoting biochemical reactions and metabolic processes of PAEs are the main mechanisms for mitigating contamination. Based on these reviews, this study provides a valuable framework for determining future study objectives to reveal environmental risks and reduce the resistance control of PAEs in agricultural soils.

Toxicity of polychlorinated biphenyls in aquatic environments - A review

The assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and their congeners resulting from the pollution of all environmental media is inherently related to its persistence and ubiquitous nature. In principle, determination of this class of contaminants are limited to the determination of their concentrations in the various environmental matrices. For solving many problems in this context, knowledge of the emission sources of PCBs, transport pathways, and sites of contamination and biomagnification is of great benefit to scientists and researchers, as well as many regulatory organizations. By far the largest amounts of PCBs, regardless of their discharged points, end up in the soil, sediment and finally in different aquatic environments. By reviewing relevant published materials, the source of origin of PCBs in the environment particularly from different pollution point sources, it is possible to obtain useful information on the nature of different materials that are sources of PCBs, or their concentrations and their toxicity or health effects and how they can be removed from contaminated media. This review focuses on the sources of PCBs in aquatic environments and critically reviews the toxicity of PCBs in aquatic animals and plants. The review also assesses the toxicity equivalency factors (TEFs) of PCBs providing valuable knowledge to other scientists and researchers that enables regulatory laws to be formulated based on selective determination of concentrations regarding their maximum permissible limits (MPLs) allowed. This review also supplies a pool of valuable information useful for designing decontamination technologies for PCBs in media like soil, sediment, and wastewaters.

Effects of temperature and relative humidity on soil-air partition coefficients of organophosphate flame retardants and polybrominated diphenyl ethers

The soil-air partition coefficients (K_SA) of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) is important for determining their fate in soil and air media. However, K_SA values of OPFRs and PBDEs are not available from the current literature, and the effects of environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity (RH) on K_SA values are not clear. In this study, a solid-phase fugacity meter was used to measure the K_SA values of PBDEs and OPFRs at different temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 °C) and relative humidity (RH) conditions (<3 and 100% RH), the relationships between K_SA and octanol-air partition coefficients (K_OA) for OPFRs and PBDEs were analyzed. The results showed that an increase in temperature and RH resulted in a decrease of all K_SA values for PBDEs and OPFRs. Furthermore, the effects of RH on the soil-air partitioning behavior of PBDEs were larger than that of OPFRs. In addition, a significant correlation (p < 0.0001) was observed between log K_SA and log K_OA. The experimental K_SA values of OPFRs and PBDEs were quite different from the predicted K_SA, when calculated with their K_OA values. Overall, this study provides a better understanding for predicting the behavior and fate of OPFRs and PBDEs in soil-air systems.

Concentrations, sources, and exposure risk of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil profiles of the floodplain of the lower reaches of the River Niger, Nigeria

The concentrations of 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in soils collected at three depths from thirteen different sites along the floodplain of the lower reaches of the River Niger (LRRN) in Nigeria. The aim of the study was to provide data on the levels of contamination, sources of the contaminants, and risks to the ecosystem and humans. Soil samples were Soxhlet extracted with a solvent mixture of dichloromethane (DCM)/n-hexane and cleaned up on a column packed with Florisil and silica gel. The PCBs in the samples were quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The Ʃ28 PCB concentrations in the floodplain soils varied between not detected (nd) and 11,151 ng g^-1 for different sampling sites and depths. The PCB concentrations and homologue distribution patterns in soil profiles of the floodplain of the LRRN showed remarkable differences with respect to sites and depths. The results obtained were used to evaluate the ecological and human health risks, which indicated that there is a potential risk to organisms and humans from exposure to PCBs in these soil profiles. The source evaluation as determined by principal component analysis suggested that PCBs in these soil profiles came from burnt circuit boards, cable wires, use of paints, discharges from transformers, long-range migration, and deposition.

Occurrence, health risks and soil-air exchange of phthalate acid esters: A case study in plastic film greenhouses of Chongqing, China

The residue of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in plastic film greenhouses had become a global concern environmental pollution problem. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and fate of PAEs in the soil-air interface of the greenhouses. In this study, the occurrence, health risks, and soil-air exchange of PAEs from ten soil samples and four air samples of different greenhouses were investigated by a case study. The concentrations of total PAEs and individual PAEs congeners between two seasons were significantly different in the greenhouse soil and atmosphere. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (1.04 mg kg^-1) and diisobutyl phthalate (0.16 mg kg^-1) were the predominant PAE congeners of soil in spring and autumn, respectively. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate was the major PAE congeners in the greenhouse atmosphere both of spring (0.03 μg m^-3) and autumn (1.32 μg m^-3). Health risks assessment showed that the predominant exposure route for adults was dietary intake, and the total carcinogenic risk level of PAEs was acceptable. Besides, fugacity model analysis indicated that di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate tended to deposit from air to soil with mean deposition flux of 175.1 kg (h⋅km²)^-1 in autumn and 11.9 kg (h⋅km²)^-1 in spring. On the contrary, diethyl phthalate escaped from soil with mean volatilization flux of 0.005 kg (h⋅km²)^-1 in autumn and 0.025 kg (h⋅km²)^-1 in spring. Other PAE congeners have tried to establish an equilibrium status through recycling continuously between the soil and air, and the source-sink relationships depended on their concentrations and hydrophobicity. This study showed that the distribution and movement of PAEs in the soil-air interface might be principally caused by temperature and their chemical properties.

Potentiality of Native Ascomycete Strains in Bioremediation of Highly Polychlorinated Biphenyl Contaminated Soils

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are organic pollutants that are harmful to environment and toxic to humans. Numerous studies, based on basidiomycete strains, have reported unsatisfactory results in the mycoremediation of PCB-contaminated soils mainly due to the non-telluric origin of these strains. The abilities of a five-Ascomycete-strain consortium in the mycoremediation of PCB-polluted soils and its performance to restore their sound functioning were investigated using mesocosm experiments associated with chromatography gas analysis and enzymatic activity assays. With the soil H containing 850 ppm PCB from which the strains had been isolated, a significant PCB depletion of 29% after three months of treatment was obtained. This led to an important decrease of PCBs from 850 to 604 ppm. With the soil L containing 36 ppm PCB, biodegradation did not occur. In both soils, the fungal biomass quantified by the ergosterol assay, did not increase at the end of the treatment. Biodegradation evidenced in the soil H resulted in a significantly improved stoichiometry of N and P acquiring enzymatic activities. This unprecedented study demonstrates that the native Ascomycetes display remarkable properties for remediation and restoration of functioning of the soil they originated from paving the way for greater consideration of these strains in mycoremediation.

Nitrated- and oxygenated-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in urban soil from Nepal: Source assessment, air-soil exchange, and soil-air partitioning

In contrast to more frequently investigated priority pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), only little is known about the fate and distribution of nitrated- and oxygenated-PAHs (NPAHs and OPAHs) in urban soils, particularly in Indian sub-continent. Moreover, experimental data on air-soil exchange and soil-air partitioning are also lacking, which is critical in assessing the partitioning, fugacity coefficient, and secondary emission of PAH-derivatives. Hence, this article provides an insight into the fate, sources, air-soil exchange, and soil-air partitioning of PAH-derivatives on a molecular basis. Prospective health risk due to their exposure has also been discussed. The result showed that PAH-derivatives had significantly polluted all four Nepalese cities. Ʃ₁₅NPAHs and Ʃ₂OPAHs in soil were 4 and 20 times lower than their parent-PAHs, and ranged 396-2530 ng/g (median 458 ng/g) and 91.9-199 ng/g (median 94.9 ng/g), respectively. Ʃ₁₅NPAHs was higher than a few global studies, while Ʃ₂OPAHs was lower than some of the less urbanized/remote areas worldwide. The 6-Nitobenzo[a]pyrene (6-NBaP) was most abundant in soil, and accounted for 10-12% of Ʃ₁₅NPAHs, while Benzanthrone (BZONE) exceeded among OPAHs, and represented 71-76% of Ʃ₂OPAHs, respectively. Source identification study indicated that direct emissions from domestic/residential cooking and heating and secondary formations are the essential sources of derivative chemicals in soil. Fugacity fraction ratio (f_ratio) indicated volatilization from the soil. The soil-air partitioning study showed sorption by soil organic matter/black carbon has little role in soil-air partitioning of PAH-derivatives in Nepal's urban soil. The toxicity equivalency quotients (TEQs) of NPAHs (314 ± 102 ng/g) was estimated slightly higher than their parent-PAHs (294 ± 121 ng/g) suggesting a relatively higher risk of soil toxicity in Nepal.

Spatial characteristics, sources, and ecological and human health risks of polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments from some river systems in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were quantified in sediments from the lower reaches of the Niger, Ase and Forcados Rivers in Nigeria with the aim of elucidating the sources, spatial characteristics and likely ecological and human health risks relating to exposure to PCBs in the sediments. A total of 28 PCB congeners, including 7 indicator PCBs and 12 dioxin-like PCBs, were identified and quantified after Soxhlet extraction with acetone/n-hexane/dichloromethane by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The Σ28 PCB concentrations in sediments from the Niger, Ase and Forcados Rivers ranged from 13.5 to 277 ng g^-1, not detected to 1633 ng g^-1 and 6.9 to 78.6 ng g^-1 respectively. The PCB composition in sediments from these three rivers indicate the dominance of lower chlorinated (2-Cl to 5-Cl) congeners over higher chlorinated (6-Cl to 10-Cl) congeners. The ecological and human health risk assessment suggests potential risks for exposure of both organisms and humans to PCBs in sediments from these three river systems.

Spatial characteristics and risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls in surficial sediments around crude oil production facilities in the Escravos River Basin, Niger Delta, Nigeria

In this study, the concentrations of 28 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, including 12 dioxin-like PCBs and 7 indicator PCBs, were determined in sediments around oil production facilities in the Escravos River Basin of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. The aim was to describe the spatial patterns, sources, and ecosystem risks associated with exposure to PCBs in sediments of this river basin. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine the concentrations of PCBs in the sediments. The Ʃ28 PCB concentrations in sediments from the Escravos River Basin ranged between 226 and 31,900 ng g^-1 with a median concentration of 2300 ng g^-1. The results indicated that sediments around crude oil production facilities, such as, wellheads, flow stations, and truck lines, had significantly higher levels of Ʃ28 PCBs (p < 0.05) than those collected near residential communities within the river basin. The median concentrations of PCB homologues in sediments from this river basin followed the sequence: hexaPCBs > penta-PCBs > tetra-PCBs > hepta-PCBs > tri-PCBs > di-PCBs > deca-PCBs > octa-PCBs > nona-PCBs. The risk assessment of PCBs in sediments from this river basin suggest very high potential risks for both organisms and humans.

Inclusion of molecular descriptors in predictive models improves pesticide soil-air partitioning estimates

The soil-air exchange of pesticides is one potential fate and exposure pathways, and this process is generally thought to be governed by soil properties and environmental conditions. The experimental determination of soil-air partitioning coefficient (Ksa) is laborious and costly and typically, Ksa's are predicted from a semiempirical or a simple linear regression approach with soil and environmental variables. Here we developed a model that combined linear regression of soil, environmental and molecular parameters with the quantitative structural-property relationship (QSPR) to predict Ksa for pesticides. The values of theoretical descriptors of pesticides were calculated and the best descriptors selected using the Boruta Algorithm. Seventy-six experimental logKsa values for 17 pesticides were used in model development. Multiple linear regression (MLR) with a soil (organic carbon fraction), physicochemical (octanol-air partitioning coefficient), environmental (temperature and humidity) and molecular descriptor (Gmin, a 2D E-state molecular parameter), called as MLR-QSPR combined model exhibited better predictability (adj. r² = 0.95) of logKsa compared to MLR (adj. r² = 0.87) or QSPR (adj. r² = 0.82) itself. MLR-QSPR also showed the best performance in five-fold cross-validation (adj. r² = 0.94) and test set verification (adj. r² = 0.96). The developed model was validated and characterized by the applicability domain. Results showed that the proposed MLR-QSPR approach is highly predictive and statistically robust with >95% of predictions within ±0.5 log unit of the measured Ksa. Therefore, this approach can be used in estimating the soil-air partitioning of pesticides to better predict it's fate and transport in environments.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorines pesticides in indoor dust: An exploration of sources and health exposure risk in a rural area (Kopawa) of Nepal

While contamination of indoor environment with organochlorine compounds (OCs) is well documented worldwide, only a few studies highlighted the problem of indoor pollution in Indian sub-continent, including Nepal. This study insight the contamination level, distribution pattern, and sources of OCs in indoor dust from a rural area of Nepal. Additionally, daily exposure risk through different intake pathways was estimated in order to mark the potential risk of OCs to local residents. Results indicated the predominance of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in dust. Ʃ₂₆OCPs (median 87 ng/g) in dust was about 7-8 times greater than Ʃ₃₀PCBs (median 10.5 ng/g). DDT was the most abundant chemical among Ʃ₂₆OCPs, followed by HCHs and endosulfan, and accounted for 73%, 7%, and 4% of Ʃ₂₆OCPs, respectively. A relatively high level of ƩDDT than other OCPs suggests the existence of DDT source in the Nepalese environment. Among PCB, tetra-CBs were most prevalent, trailed by penta-CBs, hexa-CBs, and hepta-CBs, and comprised 28%, 21%, 17% and 17% of Ʃ₃₀PCBs, respectively. Dioxin like-PCBs (median 3.48 ng/g) was about two times higher than the total indicator-PCB (median 1.63 ng/g). High p,p-DDT/p,p-DDE ratio (median 2.89) suggested fresh application and minimal degradation of DDT in the local environment of Kopawa. While lower α-/γ-HCH ratio (median 0.75) indicated lindane contamination as the primary sources of HCH. Moreover, the low α-/β-endosulfan ratio (median 0.86) specified the fresh use of commercial endosulfan. Among OCPs, only DDT positively related to total organic carbon (TOC) (Rho = 0.55, p < 0.05) but not black carbon (BC), proposing minimal or zero impact of TOC and BC. For PCBs, PCB-126 was moderately and negatively correlated with TOC (Rho = -0.49, p < 0.05), but not BC. The daily risk exposure (DRE) assessment showed that children are more vulnerable to OCs than the adult. The DRE of OCs in this study were 2-4 order of magnitude lower than their corresponding reference dose (RfD), proposing insignificant risk.

Assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Himalayan Riverine Network of Azad Jammu and Kashmir

The emission of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in South Asian countries is one of the great environmental concerns and has resulted in the contamination of surrounding high altitude regions such as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan. This first investigation of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs) concentrations in the ambient air, water and surface soil was conducted along the extensive stream network in the AJK valley of the Himalayan Region. In 2014, surface soil samples were taken and passive air and water samplers were deployed along the four main rivers, namely Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch and Kunhar, and analysed for PCBs (33 congeners) using GC-MS/MS. The ∑₃₃PCBs concentrations ranged from 31.17 to 175.2 (mean ± SD: 81 ± 46.4 pg/L), ND to 1908 (1054 ± 588.5 pg/g), and 29.8 to 94.4 (52.9 ± 22.7 pg/m³) in surface water, soil and air matrices, respectively. The levels of dioxin-like PCBs (∑₈DL-PCBs) contributed considerably towards the total PCBs concentrations: 60.63% (water), 43.87% (air) and 13.76% (soil). The log transformed air-water fugacity (log fa/fw) ratios ranged from -9.37 to 2.58; with 86.3% of the sampling sites showing net volatilization of selected PCB congeners. Similarly, the fugacity fractions for air-soil exchange exhibited narrow variation (0.8 to < 1) indicating net volatilization of PCBs. The ecological risk assessment showed low potential ecological risks (E_rⁱ  = 1.58-7.63) associated with PCB contamination. The present findings provide baseline data that suggest cold trapping of POPs in the remote mountainous areas of Pakistan and can support environmental management of POPs at the regional level. This pioneer investigation campaign to assess the PCBs concentrations in Himalayan Riverine Network of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan helps to develop baseline data of PCBs from the strategically important riverine environment that would help in future regional as well as global ecological studies. However, the effects of temperature variations on the sampling rates of chemicals across a wide spectrum of volatility along the elevation gradient were not taken under consideration for PCBs atmospheric concentrations.

Congener-specific composition of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil-air partitioning and the associated health risks

The recent changes in the compositions of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) after their restriction for 40 years may have various effects on human health. In order to characterize the congener-specific compositions of PCBs in the soil-air process and assess the associated human health risks, soil and air samples were simultaneously collected in winter and summer at two different functional locations. Homologue patterns suggest that long-range atmospheric transport might be the major source of soil and air residues of PCBs. The net deposition from air to soil was overwhelming for most PCB congeners. Variations in the occurrence and the homologue patterns of PCBs between the soil and air interface depended on chemical volatility, soil organic matter (OM) content, ambient temperature, topographical condition and atmospheric transport. Dioxin-like PCBs accounted for 11.0-70.3% and 2.31-54.8% of total PCB residues in soil and air, respectively. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with exposure to soil and air PCBs were also estimated. Different PCB congeners showed different health effects, with the highest contribution from PCB-26. Additionally, the non-carcinogenic risk levels of PCBs were enhanced, while the carcinogenic risk levels decreased during the soil-air exchange process of PCBs with time. Our results highlight the soil-air interaction of PCBs in predicting their potential human exposure health risks.

A Multisensor System for the Characterization of the Field Pressure in Terrain. Accuracy, Response, and Adjustments

In different disciplines of science, the knowledge of the resulting pressures in the subsoil can help to understand physical phenomena of mass exchange between the atmosphere and the terrain. The measurement of lower differential pressures is complicated given the low range of detected values. In this paper, a multisensor system has been designed and developed to measure differential pressures in radon gas transport studies. The adequacy of this system has been proven using a purpose-built pressure chamber and an automatic motion system developed by the authors. The temporal response frequencies, the pressure values measured by the sensors, and their ability to link in series were analyzed to offer a multisensor spatial and temporal mapping. At the same time, the influence of the components required for a real deployment were studied using different tube lengths and diameters, connectors, and obstructions across the operating range of the pressure sensors. The system has also been tested for measuring differential pressures in a real model with a concrete slab above the soil and a pressure generator system below. It was found that this system is very suitable for outdoor measurements that demand a quick temporal response and accuracy.

Examining the role of total organic carbon and black carbon in the fate of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in indoor dust from Nepal: Implication on human health

Despite the fact that the consumption and import of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been stopped in Nepal since 2001, they are still of worry for human prosperity and the environment because of their persistence behavior and constant release from sources that are presently being used. The essential objective of this study was to assess the concentration and spatial distribution of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in residential dust from Nepal keeping in mind the end goal to evaluate the importance of total organic carbon (TOC) and black carbon (BC) in the fate of legacy POPs. Additionally, health risk exposure via dust ingestion and dermal absorption was estimated to evaluate the significance of dust media for human exposure. Results demonstrated that ∑OCPs in dust was 37 times greater than ∑PCBs. DDT was mostly dominated in the dust, and contributed 90% of the ∑OCPs, while hexa-CBs predominated among PCBs and represented 34% of ∑PCBs. Birgunj and Biratnagar had a relatively higher level of ∑OCPs and ∑PCBs than those of Kathmandu and Pokhara. TOC and BC showed a poor connection with OCPs, recommending little or no role. However, PCB in the dust, especially low congeners was strongly linked with TOC but not BC indicating the significant role of TOC. The daily risk exposure estimation indicated dermal absorption through dust as the principal means of OCPs/PCBs intake to both adult and children population. These estimated exposures were 2-4 orders of magnitude inferior to their corresponding reference dose showing insignificant risk.

Tetrachloroethene primes reductive dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls in a river sediment microcosm

Halo-priming is an effective approach to initiate microbial reductive dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at contaminated sites, of which the application has been restricted by introducing extra pollutants generated from priming organohalides. In this study, tetrachloroethene (PCE) was demonstrated to be an effective priming compound to enhance PCB dechlorination both in a PCB-dechlorinating pure culture and a river sediment microcosm. In the isolated PCB-dechlorinating Dehalococcoides mccartyi CG1, PCB dechlorination activities were stimulated by adding 0.05-0.2 mM PCE, and were inhibited when further increasing PCE concentrations. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments showed that PCBs and PCE were synchronously dechlorinated in D. mccartyi CG1. In a river sediment microcosm, which was established to mimic in situ biostimulation of PCB dechlorination, 0.2 mM PCE could significantly improve para-chlorine removal from both PCB180 (2345-245-CB) and Aroclor 1260, and increase the relative abundance of indigenous dechlorinating Dehalococcoides for more than 20 times (from <0.1% to 2.3-5.0%). At the same time, PCE as a priming compound was completely dechlorinated to non-toxic ethene. Overall, this study provided an efficient strategy to stimulate in situ bioremediation of PCBs.

Spatial distribution, source analysis, and health risk assessment of heavy metals contamination in house dust and surface soil from four major cities of Nepal

Raising population, deteriorating environmental conditions and limiting natural resources to handle the key environmental health problems have critically affected human health and the environment. Policy makers and planners in Nepal are more concerned today than at any other time in the past about the deterioration of the environmental condition. Therefore, understanding the connection between pollution and human wellbeing is fundamental endeavors to control pollution exposures and secure human wellbeing. This ability is especially critical for countries like Nepal where the issues of environmental pollution have customarily taken a second place to request for economic development. In this study, spatial distribution and sources of 12 heavy metals (HMs) were investigated in surface soils (n = 24) and house dust (n = 24) from four major urban areas of Nepal in order to mark the pollution level. Additionally, a health risk was estimated to establish the link between HMs pollution and human health. Results showed that the median concentration of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Mn and Zn in soil and dust were 2-13 times greater than the background value. The As, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb showed a relatively higher spatial variability in soil and dust. Zn was the most abundant metal measured in dust and soil and accounted for 59% and 55% of ∑₇HMs, respectively. The HMs in soil and dust were poorly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) and black carbon (BC), suggesting little or no influence on HMs contamination. Source analysis study indicated the distribution of Cr, Ni, Sb, Ag, Pb, Cu, and Zn in soil and dust are mainly affected by anthropogenic sources, particularly traffic emissions, industrial source, and domestic households materials, while Co, Fe, As, Mn and Cd were from natural sources. The estimated carcinogenic risk (CR) of HMs in soil and dust exceeded the acceptable level of human exposure, recommending significant CR to the local population.

Measurement of legacy and emerging flame retardants in indoor dust from a rural village (Kopawa) in Nepal: Implication for source apportionment and health risk assessment

Under the Stockholm Convention, signatory countries are obliged to direct source inventories, find current sources, and provide ecological monitoring evidence to guarantee that the encompassing levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are declining. However, such monitoring of different types of POPs are to a great degree constrained in most developing countries including Nepal and are primarily confined to suspected source area/ densely populated regions. In this study, 9 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2 dechlorane plus (DPs), 6 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and 8 organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in indoor dust from a rural area (Kopawa) in Nepal in order to evaluate their occurrence/level, profile, spatial distribution and their sources. Additionally, health risk exposure was estimated to anticipate the possible health risk to the local population. The results showed that OPFRs was the most abundant FR measured in the dust. The concentration of ∑₈OPFRs was about 2, 3 and 4 orders of magnitude higher than the ∑₆NBFRs, ∑₉PBDEs, and ∑₂DPs, respectively. Tris (methylphenyl) phosphate (TMPP) and Tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) were the most abundant OPFRs analyzed in the dust; while decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) exceeded among NBFRs. Likewise, 2,2',3,3',4,4',5,5',6,6'-decabromodiphenylether (BDE-209) was the most identified chemical among PBDEs. The total organic carbon (TOC) content in dust was significantly and positively connected with octa-BDEs (Rho = 0.615, p < 0.01), BTBPE (Rho = 0.733, p < 0.01), TPHP (Rho = 0.621, p < 0.01), TEHP (Rho = 0.560, p < 0.01) and TMPPs (Rho = 0.550, p < 0.01), while black carbon (BC) was either weakly related or not related, suggesting little or no impact of BC in the distribution of FRs. Principal component analysis indicated the contribution from commercial penta-, octa- and deca-BDEs formulation, the adhesive substance, food packaging and paints, and degradation of BDE-209 as the essential sources of FRs. Health risk exposure estimates showed that dermal absorption via dust as the primary route of FRs intake. The estimated daily exposure of PBDEs, NBFRs and OPFRs were 2-10 orders of magnitude lower than their corresponding reference dose (RfD), suggesting insignificant risk. However, other routes such as inhalation and dietary intake might still be significant in the case of Kopawa which should be tested in future.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Surface Soil from North-East India: Implication for Sources Apportionment and Health-Risk Assessment

Although India never manufactured polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), evidence suggests the prevalence of PCBs in multi-environmental matrices. Despite the high level of PCBs that has been detailed in the major urban areas of India, little is known about the fate and sources of PCBs in Northeast India (NEI). This motivated us to investigate the contamination level and sources of PCBs in the surface soil. In this study, the environmental concentration and sources of 25 PCBs were investigated in surface soil (n = 60) from three states of NEI (lower Assam, Manipur, and Tripura). Additionally, the relationship between soil organic carbon (SOC) and PCBs was studied to investigate the role of SOC in the distribution of PCBs. Overall, the concentration of ∑₂₅PCBs ranged from 2950 to 16,700 pg/g dw (median 7080 pg/g dw), 3580-21,100 pg/g dw (median 11,500 pg/g dw), and 2040-11,000 pg/g dw (median 4270 pg/g dw) in Assam, Manipur, and Tripura, respectively. Low-chlorinated PCBs were more prevalent than highly chlorinated PCBs. PCB-49 was identified as the most abundant in soil, followed by PCB-52, and accounted for 13% and 12.9% of ∑₂₅PCBs, respectively. With respect to land use categories, high ∑₂₅PCBs were related to grassland areas and proximity to the roadside soil. The principal component analysis indicated emissions from technical PCB mixtures, combustion of municipal wastes/residential wood, incineration of hospital wastes, and e-waste recycling/disposal sites are the real sources of PCBs. Marginally, a moderate-to-weak correlation of SOC with ∑₂₅PCBs (R² = 0.144, p < 0.05) and their homologs (R² = 0.280-0.365, p < 0.05) indicated the little role of SOC in the dispersion of PCBs. The estimated toxic equivalency of dioxin-like PCBs suggested that PCB-126 is the most toxic contaminant to endanger the human population.

Distribution, sources, and air-soil exchange of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in urban soils of Nepal

Due to the high temperature and extensive use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), tropical cities could act as secondary sources of these pollutants and therefore received global concern. As compared with other tropical cities, studies on the air-soil exchange of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in tropical Nepali cities remained limited. In the present study, 39 soil samples from Kathmandu (capital of Nepal) and 21 soil samples from Pokhara (second largest city in Nepal) were collected The soil concentrations of the sum of endosulfans (α- and β-endosulfans) ranged from 0.01 to 16.4 ng/g dw. Meanwhile, ∑dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs) ranged from 0.01 to 6.5 ng/g dw; ∑6PCBs from 0.01 to 9.7 ng/g dw; and ∑15PAHs from 17.1 to 6219 ng/g dw. High concentrations of OCPs were found in the soil of commercial land, while, high soil PAH concentrations were found on tourist/religious and commercial land. Combined the published air concentrations, and the soil data of this study, the directions and fluxes of air-soil exchange were estimated using a fugacity model. It is clear that Nepal is a country contributing prominently to secondary emissions of endosulfans, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and low molecular weight (LMW) PCBs and PAHs. The flux for all the pollutants in Kathmandu, with ∑endosulfans up to 3553; HCB up to 5263; and ∑LMW-PAHs up to 24378 ng m^-2 h^-1, were higher than those in Pokhara. These high flux values indicated the high strength of Nepali soils to act as a source.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in house dust and surface soil in major urban regions of Nepal: Implication on source apportionment and toxicological effect

Urban centers have turned to be the provincial store for resource consumptions and source releases of different types of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), bringing about boundless environmental pollutions, among different issues. Human prosperity inside urban communities is unambiguously dependent on the status of urban soils and house dusts. However, environmental occurrence and sources of release of these SVOCs are challenging in Nepalese cities, as exceptionally very limited data are accessible. This motivated us to explore the environmental fate, their source/sink susceptibilities and health risk associated with PAHs. In this study, we investigated the contamination level, environmental fate and sources/sink of 16 EPA's priority pollutants in surface soil and house dusts from four major cities of Nepal. Additionally, the toxicological effect of individual PAH was studied to assess the health risk of PAHs. Generally, the concentrations of ∑₁₆PAHs in surface soil were 1.5 times higher than house dust, and ranged 767-6770ng/g dry weight (dw) (median 1810ng/g dw), and 747-4910 dw (median 1320ng/g dw), respectively. High molecular weight-PAHs both in soil and dust were more abundant than low molecular weight-PAHs, suggesting the dominance of pyrogenic source. Moderate to weak correlation of TOC and BC with PAHs in soil and dust suggested little or no role of soil organic carbon in sorption of PAHs. Source diagnostic ratio and principal component analysis indicated fossil fuel combustion, traffic/vehicular emissions and combustion of biomass are the principal sources of PAHs contamination in Nepalese urban environment. The high average TEQ value of PAHs in soil than dust suggested high risk of soil carcinogenicity compared to dust.

Environmental concentration and atmospheric deposition of halogenated flame retardants in soil from Nepal: Source apportionment and soil-air partitioning

While various investigations have been driven on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other flame retardants (FRs) in different framework around the world, information about contamination and fate of PBDEs and other FRs in developing countries especially in the Indian subcontinent is uncommon. Nepal being located in the Indian subcontinent, very little is known about contamination level of semi-volatile organic pollutants discharged into the environment. This motivated us to investigate the environmental fate of halogenated flame retardant (HFRs) in Nepalese condition. In this study, we investigated the concentration, fate, and sources of 9 PBDEs, 2 dechlorane plus isomers (DPs), and 6 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). Moreover, air-soil exchange and soil-air partitioning were also evaluated to characterize the pattern of air-soil exchange and environmental fate. In general, the concentrations of NBFRs in soil were more prevalent than PBDEs and DPs, and accounted 95% of ∑HFRs. By and large, the concentrations of NBFRs and DPs were measured high in Kathmandu, while PBDEs level exceeded in Pokhara. Principal component analysis (PCA) study suggested contributions from commercial penta-, octa-, and deca-BDEs products and de-bromination of highly brominated PBDEs as the significant source of PBDEs. Likewise, low f_anti ratio suggested DPs in soil might have originated from long-range atmospheric transport from remote areas, while high levels of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in soil were linked with the use of wide varieties of consumer products. The estimated fugacity fraction (ff) for individual HFR was quite lower (<0.05) than equilibrium value, suggesting that deposition and net transport from air to the soil is overwhelming. Soil-air partitioning study revealed neither octanol-air partition coefficient (K_OA) nor black carbon partition coefficient (K_BC-A) is an appropriate surrogate for soil organic matter (SOM), subsequently, absorption by SOM has no or little role in the partitioning of HFRs.

Organophosphate ester flame retardants in Nepalese soil: Spatial distribution, source apportionment and air-soil exchange assessment

Despite soil being the major terrestrial environmental reservoir and one of the significant sinks for many hydrophobic organic compounds including organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs), limited information is available about concentration and fate of OPFRs contamination in urban soil in general and especially in case of Nepal. This study investigates the environmental concentration, spatial distribution and source apportionment of eight OPFRs in surface soil (n = 28) from four major cities of Nepal with special interest on air-soil exchange. Overall, significantly high concentrations of ∑₈OPFR were measured in soil ranging from 25-27,900 ng/g dw (median 248 ng/g dw). In terms of compositional pattern, tris(methyl phenyl) phosphate (TMPP) was the most abundant phosphorus chemical in soil, followed by tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and accounted for 35-49% and 8-25% of ∑₈OPFRs, respectively. The high level of these OPFRs was attributed to local sources as opposed to transboundary influence from remote areas. A Spearman's rank correlation analysis exhibited weak correlation of ∑₈OPFRs with TOC (Rho = 0.117, p < 0.05) and BC (Rho = 0.007, p < 0.05), suggesting little or no influence of TOC and BC on the concentration of ∑₈OPFRs. The fugacity fraction (ff) results indicated a strong influence of soil contamination on atmospheric level of OPFRs via volatilization.
