Assessment of exposure to metals, As and Se in water and sediment of a freshwater reservoir and their bioaccumulation in fish species of different feeding and habitat preferences

The variations of heavy metals sources varied their aggregated concentration and health risk in sediments of karst rivers - A case study in Liujiang River Basin, Southwest China

The sources and health risk variation of heavy metals (HMs) in sediments of Liujiang River Basin were investigated seasonally to clear the control of HMs contamination in karst rivers. The results revealed the exogenous input of HMs should be more prominent in wet season, due to the higher concentration and EF values. PMF identified HMs were mainly from natural, mining and industrial sources. The input of exogenous HMs were influenced by mining and industrial sources in wet season, but primarily by industrial sources in dry season. HI values were overall below 1, suggesting the relatively low non-carcinogenic risk. The TCR values of HMs were generally beyond 10-6, particularly those of As and Cr even exceeded 10-4 for children, which expressed a high carcinogenic risk. The sources components of As and Cr suggested preventing the migration of mining contaminants and limiting industrial emission should be essential to Liujiang River Basin.

Usefulness of oxidative stress biomarkers in native species for the biomonitoring of pesticide pollution in a shallow lake of the Austral Pampas, Argentina

Pesticide contamination and its adverse effects on native freshwater species continue to be a worldwide major concern, mainly in developing countries. Passive biomonitoring of pesticide pollution in shallow lakes may be achieved by the simultaneous use of fish and wetland plants. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of current-use pesticides in the surface water of a shallow lake of the Austral Pampas region (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) surrounded by intensive agricultural activities and its relationship with a battery of biomarkers, including oxidative stress and genotoxicity, in two native species, the fish Oligosarcus jenynsii and the macrophyte Bidens laevis. A total of 26 pesticide residues were analyzed, and the main ones detected were glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), chlorpyrifos, and imidacloprid. In O. jenynsii, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in the liver increased with chlorpyrifos occurrence, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the brain and liver increased with the presence of both chlorpyrifos and glyphosate. In B. laevis, H2O2 and MDA levels in leaves and roots increased with AMPA occurrence. Also, leaf H2O2 contents and root MDA levels increased with chlorpyrifos concentration. In contrast, catalase and peroxidase activities in roots decreased with AMPA and chlorpyrifos occurrence. In both species, mainly H2O2 and MDA levels demonstrated their sensitivity to be used as biomarkers in the biomonitoring of current-use pesticide pollution in shallow lakes. Their use may provide information to plan strategies for environmental conservation by government institutions or decision-makers, and to assess the biota health status.

What do small cetaceans tell us about trace elements pollution on the Argentinean coast? Franciscana dolphin as a biomonitor

Trace elements (TEs) constitute the oldest emerging pollutants globally, most occur from natural sources, but a few are derived from anthropogenic sources. Marine mammals are considered bioindicators of ecosystem contamination. The aims of this review is compile reports on essential and nonessential TEs occurrence in small cetaceans from Argentinean waters; and to review the existing information on the concentration of TEs in the Franciscana dolphin, a biomonitor species of the Argentine coastal marine ecosystem. We searched reports where levels of TEs were present in small cetaceans from and eight species were analysed: Pontoporia blainvillei, Tursiops truncatus gephyreus, Kogia breviceps, Delphinus delphis, Lagenorhynchus obscurus, Lagenodelphis hasei, Cephaloryhchus commersonii and Ziphius cavirostris. Essential TEs like Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Se, As, Au, Ag, Sn, and nonessential TE as Pb, Cd, Hg, As was considered. The reports compiled in this article analysed kidney, liver, muscle and occasionally brain, skin, lung and spleen, covering a temporal range of 30 years, from 1982 to 2016. Of data analysis, we identify knowledge gaps, species of small cetaceans for which the concentration of trace metals is not yet known and areas on the Argentine coast where there are no reports that analyse them. The most recent information corresponds to the 2010 decade, and in those subsequent publications, the samples were taken at that time. This emphasizes the importance of reviewing this data, in order to compare old and new datasets, create contamination timelines and evaluate possible increases or decreases of contaminants in different study areas. The information recopilated will serve as valuable baselines to detect the future impact of increasing human, even natural, activities on marine ecosystems in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Transfer of Se from sediments to the western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis: Tissue distribution, accumulation, and effects on the antioxidant physiology

Selenium (Se) has been shown to cause various toxicities in predatory species (i.e., fish and birds) in Se-contaminated aquatic environments. However, trophic transfer of Se from abiotic environments to freshwater fish has been relatively less addressed. In this study, 2-month-old mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were fed Se-enriched oligochaete (Lumbriculus variegatus, exposed to different concentrations of Se(IV) at 0.0, 3.0, 10.0, and 30.0 µg/g dry weight for 7 days) for 45 days. Tissue distribution, Se speciation, and effects on the antioxidant physiology in G. affinis were assessed. The results showed Se was rapidly accumulated in the oligochaete, with 6.30 ± 1.20, 16.20 ± 2.10, and 34.50 ± 2.40 µg/g dw of total Se levels in the worms exposed to 3.0, 10.0, and 30.0 µg/g of Se(IV), respectively. Total Se levels were increased in a dose-dependent manner in fish tissues and Se(IV) from sediments was maternally transferred to the fish embryos. Se-Met-and Se-Cys-were the predominant Se species in the worm and fish tissues, accounting for a minimum of 91.01% of the total Se. Furthermore, increased lipid peroxidation and altered the activities of antioxidant enzymes and levels of GSH were noticed in G. affinis fed the Se-enriched L. variegatus. This study has demonstrated that Se(IV) is transferred from an abiotic vector to freshwater organisms, disturbing the antioxidant physiology in G. affinis and potentially their offspring. This study highlights the importance of dietary exposure on the accumulation and toxicity of Se in aquatic organisms.

Selenium Content in Freshwater and Marine Fish from Southern Brazil Coastal Plain: a Comparative Analysis on Environmental and Dietary Aspects

The coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul is considered to be a Se-deficient region in terms of its population dietary habit, making it the focus of this study. Selenium dietary deficiency is a concern when we consider its potential critical health effects on the local population. Therefore, this study contributes new information on the levels of Se in several species of marine and freshwater fish in the region of the Patos-Mirim Lagoon system, coupled with a comparative analysis of the metalloid contents between both fish groups. The Se contents in the fish species ranged from 88 ± 13 to 688 ± 19 μg.kg^-1. The average Se concentration in the muscle tissue of the freshwater species (251 ± 96 μg kg^-1) was significantly lower than that of the marine species (412 ± 143 μg kg^-1). Likewise, no evidence of Se biomagnification was found among the fish from both the marine and freshwater environments, suggesting the absence of trophic transfer of Se. We note that to ensure that the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance, 55 μg day^-1) of Se dietary intake for adults is met, at least 134 g of freshwater or 82 g of marine fish fillet could be incorporated into the diet of the population of Rio Grande do Sul. According to target hazard quotients (THQ) and the permissible safety limits, consumption of the fish species analyzed is safe for human health.

The Size Screening Could Greatly Degrade the Health Risk of Fish Consuming Associated to Metals Pollution-An Investigation of Angling Fish in Guangzhou, China

Fish size can heavily impact the bioaccumulation of metals, but it was rarely applied to screen out the fish with low health risk for consuming. Given the widespread metals contamination of angling fish, the angling fish collected from Guangzhou, China, were taken as an example in this study. The screening length and weight were detailed in accordance with the investigation of metals contamination among angling fish. Importantly, the feasibility of size screening on mitigating the health risk of angling fish was evaluated. The results revealed that the concentration of Cr and As were relatively high and beyond the maximum residue limit (MRL) in some fish. The mean pollution index (Pi) of As, Cr, and Pb were beyond 0.2, suggesting the widespread minor contamination. The total metal pollution index (MPI) manifested Oreochroms mossambcus was the most contaminated. The target hazard quotient (THQ) of Cr, As, and Hg were relatively higher, but the higher probability of THQ > 1 indicated the health risk should be dominantly from As. The highest TTHQ suggested the highest risk of Oreochroms mossambcus. Regression analysis determined the fish of THQ < 1 should be more likely centralized in the size that is beyond 13.7 cm and 45.0 g for adults and 19.8 cm and 127.9 g for children. Significantly reducing THQ among these screened fish confirmed their effect on the degrading health risk of metals; particularly, the children’s THQ returned below 1. The commonly contaminated Oreochroms mossambcus was further excluded to remove the screened fish with THQ > 1; the further decrease in THQ confirmed that the exclusion of a contaminated species could improve the effect of size screening.

Integrating indices based on different chemical extractions and bioaccumulation in Bellamya aeruginosa to assess metal pollution and ecological risk in sediment

Various indices based on metal chemical data are used to evaluate pollution and ecological risk, but the consistency of the assessment results is usually unsatisfactory, and it is unclear if the ecological risk from sediment metals is accurately represented in in situ zoobenthos. Herein, the pollution and ecological risk associated with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sediments of two adjacent lakes (Datun (DT) and Changqiao (CQ)) were comprehensively evaluated by integrating metal concentrations, chemical forms and bioaccumulation in Bellamya aeruginosa (B. aeruginosa). The metal concentrations and chemical compositions varied widely in the sediments. Over 50% of the Cd, Pb and Zn in the sediments was present in bioavailable forms, followed by 28% of Cu and less than 25% of As, Cr and Ni. According to the enrichment factor (EF) and concentration enrichment ratio (CER) assessments, Cr and Ni were natural in origin, while the other metals were at minor to extremely high pollution levels, with average EFs of 1.5-77.6 and CERs of 1.1-113.4. The pollution levels for Cd, Cu and Pb from the EF and CER assessments were similar, while those for As and Zn were higher according to CER than EF (p = 0.05), likely due to the baseline underestimation associated with the potential diagenetic remobilization of bioavailable metals. The ecological risk index (Er), sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed a high eco-risk for Cd, while no similar risk was found for the other metals. By integrating risk indices with the chemical forms and pollution levels of metals, we deduced high eco-risks for As and Pb and moderate eco-risks for Cu and Zn in DT Lake and moderate eco-risks for As, Pb and Zn in CQ Lake. The other metals in the sediments of the two lakes presented low eco-risks. No significant positive correlations (p = 0.05) between metal accumulation in B. aeruginosa and the indices of pollution and eco-risk were observed except for the case of As, implying that measuring the metal concentrations in B. aeruginosa would not accurately characterize the metal pollution and ecological risk of sediments.

Multi-biomarker Assessment in a Native Species Psalidodon eigenmanniorum Under Inorganic Mercury and Recovery Scenarios

The increasing contamination of water bodies with mercury raises concerns about its possible effects on aquatic organisms. The combined use of several biomarkers allows researchers to study the impact of a chemical at different levels of biological organization. In the present work, we determined the response of histological (gills and liver), somatic (condition factor and hepato-somatic index), and behavioral (predator-prey relationship, through the presentation of a computer-animated image) biomarkers in the native species Psalidodon eigenmanniorum exposed to 100 µg L^-1 of inorganic Hg (IHg) during 96 h. We also assessed whether there was a change in the biomarkers analyzed after 7 days in Hg-free water compared with those exposed to IHg. In exposed fish, IHg caused damage to the gills and liver tissues. The condition factor showed no difference between IHg-exposed organisms and control organisms, while the hepato-somatic index was lower in IHg-exposed fish. As for the behavioral analyses, it was observed that the presentation of a stimulus induced changes in the behavioral responses of fish exposed to IHg, which showed a heightened state of alertness with respect to control. On the other hand, after 7 days in Hg-free water, the organisms generally showed no changes in biomarkers compared with IHg-exposed fish. Our results contribute new data on IHg toxicity in a native species and provide information on the plasticity of damage to reverse itself. Furthermore, this work provides baseline information for environmental assessments in water bodies where mercury is present.

Distribution and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Organs of Juvenile Fishes from a Freshwater System (Paraná River, South America)

The concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn (TE) in four juvenile fishes (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro, Salminus brasiliensis, Brycon orbignyanus, and Megaleporinus obtusidens) and associated sediment water from the Lower Paraná River were measured. For muscle, gills, and liver fishes, the TE accumulation in the muscle, gills, and liver was evaluated. The TE concentration was measured by quadrupolar inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS). Cadmium (0.25 ± 0.07 μg L^-1), Cu (3.00 ± 1.44 μg L^-1), Fe (612 ± 69 μg L^-1), and Pb (1.92 ± 1.20 μg L^-1) in water and As (4.1-6.9 μg g^-1), Cr (20.1-31.4 μg g^-1), Cu (10.7-19.2 μg g^-1), Mn (351.3-482.2 μg g^-1), and Ni (24.5 ± 10.9 μg g^-1) in sediments exceeded the guide values for the conservation of aquatic life. In general, muscle of omnivorous species (B. orbignyanus and M. obtusidens) showed higher values of elements than those of carnivorous species (A. pantaneiro and S. brasiliensis). However, TE concentrations varied with fish species and organs. Independently of the examined species, the highest concentrations of Cr and Pb were in the muscle and gills, respectively. Cadmium, Cu, and Fe concentrations were higher in the liver than in gills and muscle in all four fish species. These results were consistent with the tissue selectivity index analyzed. For the four species, major essential elements showed the highest accumulation. However, the accumulation of toxic elements in omnivorous fish was higher than in carnivorous fish. The individual pollution load index indicated that sediment was very polluted with As and Pb, but based on the combined ecological indexes, low elemental sediment pollution in the Espinillo Lake was revealed.

The Bioaccumulation and Health Risk Assessment of Metals among Two Most Consumed Species of Angling Fish (Cyprinus carpio and Pseudohemiculter dispar) in Liuzhou (China): Winter Should Be Treated as a Suitable Season for Fish Angling

Wild fish caught by anglers were validated to be commonly polluted by metals, but their contamination status could be varied with changing seasons. To determine the seasonal variation in metal pollution and health risks in these fish, this study took Liuzhou City as an example to investigate the concentrations of eight metals in two dominant angling fishes (Cyprinus carpio and Pseudohemiculter dispar) collected, respectively, in winter and summer. The obtained results suggested the mean concentrations of metals in fish are overall lower in winter. Only Cr, Zn, and Cd in some fish were beyond the thresholds in summer. The significant correlations between fish length and weight and most metals suggested the biological dilution effect could exert its influence in winter. The similar distribution of metals in winter suggested that metal bioaccumulation should be manipulated by living habitats, while the inconsistent distribution of metals in summer may be related to the variation in feeding behavior. The metal pollution index (Pi) values were all below 0.2 in winter, which suggested no metal contamination in fish, but most fish were found to be mostly contaminated by Cr and Cd in summer, which was confirmed by their Pi > 0.2. The fish could be consumed freely in winter due to the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) below 1, while the consumption of fish was not entirely safe in summer, particularly for children, due to TTHQ values that were generally beyond 1. Given the higher weekly recommended consumption of fish in winter, winter should be treated as a suitable season for fish angling.

Effect of Methylmercury Exposure on Bioaccumulation and Nonspecific Immune Respsonses in Hybrid Grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × Epinephelus lanceolatus

The head kidney was primary organ that accumulated methylmercury in hybrid grouper. Muscle tissue had lower methylmercury content than the head kidney and liver. Nonspecific immune responses and bioaccumulation of methylmercury were linked to hybrid grouper health.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is a dangerous heavy metal that can accumulate in fish and is harmful when consumed by humans. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of mercury in the form of methylmercury (MeHg) and evaluated nonspecific immune responses such as phagocytic activity and superoxide anion (O₂⁻) production in hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × E. lanceolatus). The hybrid grouper leukocytes were incubated with methylmercury chloride (CH₃HgCl) at concentrations of 10–10,000 µg/L to determine cell viability, phagocytic activity, and O₂⁻ production in vitro. Subsequently, the grouper were exposed daily to CH₃HgCl mixed in the experimental diets at concentrations of 0, 1, 5, and 10 mg/kg for 28 days. The bioaccumulation of MeHg in the liver, head kidney, and muscle tissue was measured, and the phagocytic activity and O₂⁻ production were evaluated. In vitro results indicated that cell viability was significantly lower than that of the control group at concentrations > 500 µg/L. The phagocytic rate and O₂⁻ production at concentrations ˃ 500 and ˃ 200 µg/L, respectively, were significantly lower than those of the control group. The dietary exposure demonstrated that MeHg accumulated more substantially in the liver and head kidney compared with the muscle tissue in the treatment groups. Moreover, the cumulative concentration significantly increased with higher concentrations and more days of exposure. The phagocytic rate and O₂⁻ production in the treatment groups were significantly lower than those in the control group from days 2 and 1, respectively. In conclusion, hybrid grouper accumulated significant MeHg in the liver and head kidney compared with the muscle tissue, and higher concentrations and more exposure days resulted in decreased cell viability, phagocytic activity, and O₂⁻ production.

Artificial intelligence, big data, and blockchain in food safety

Food safety plays an essential role in our daily lives, and it becomes serious with the development of worldwide trade. To tackle the food safety issues, many advanced technologies have been developed to monitor the process of the food industry (FI) to ensure food safety, including the process of food production, processing, transporting, storage, and retailing. These technologies are often referred to as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and blockchain, which have been widely applied in many research areas. In this review, we introduce these technologies and their applications in the food safety domain. Firstly, basic concepts of these technologies are presented. Then, applications for food safety from a data perspective based on these technologies are analyzed. Finally, future challenges of the applications of AI, big data, and blockchain are discussed.

Spatial distribution, partitioning, ecological risk and source apportionment of potential toxic elements in water and sediments of the Hoor Al-Azim wetland and their bioaccumulation in selected commercial fish species

The potentially toxic elements (PTEs) concentrations in water and sediments were measured in the Hoor Al-Azim wetland to evaluate the spatial distribution, pollution rate, fate, partitioning, and ecological risk and also to recognize the PTEs sources in sediments using MLR-APCs (multiple linear regression-absolute principal component scores) receptor model. The human health risk was investigated based on the seven fish species consumed in the study area. Based on the results, water and sediment contamination was observed at some stations in the southern part of the wetland where agricultural water drains. Also, the sediments of oil well drilling disposal site was polluted by PTEs. Based on the MLR-APCs model, 80.8% of Mo and 81.5% of Se originated from agricultural source. Total target hazard quotients (TTHQ) values suggested that the children could experience adverse health effects due to consumption of Coptodon zillii, Aspius vorax, Carassius auratus and Carasobarbus luteus.

Effects of heavy metals speciations in sediments on their bioaccumulation in wild fish in rivers in Liuzhou-A typical karst catchment in southwest China

Although fish are widely confirmed to be susceptible to heavy metals (HMs) contamination in sediments, this bioconversion haven't been detailed. This is especially the case in karst areas, where HMs are less stably retained in the sediments and are more bioavailable. Therefore, we surveyed representative karst rivers in Liuzhou, China, in order to study the relationship between the speciations of seven HMs in the sediments with their bioaccumulation in wild fish. The results showed that the HMs in sediments are all below their permissible exposure limit (PEL), but Cd and Zn are significantly higher than soil basline. Most HMs are in residual fraction, while their exchangeable fractions are present in extremely low proportions. The concentration of Zn, Cr and Cd in some fish are above their maximum recommended limit (MRL). The concentrations of most of the HMs in the fish are significantly correlated with the levels in the sediments and given the higher correlation coefficients for their carbonate-bound phase, this phase can be seen to play a critical role in HMs bioconversion. However, the presence of this phase in low proportions enables other phases, especially oxidizable form, to play a greater role in HMs bioaccumulation. Apart from Do, HMs in the fish samples are significantly correlated with multiple environmental factors, demonstrating environmental fluctuations can manipulate HMs bioconversion from sediments; however, their significance depend heavily on the proportion of particular species. HMs in reducible and oxidizable fraction are more important in regulating, rather than promoting, their bioconversion during environmental fluctuations. Fluctuations in EC, TDS and pH can increase the impacts of HMs in carbonate-bound fraction on their bioconversion. Given the higher background values of EC and TDS and lower pH values during the monsoon period, careful attention should be paid to the increased bioconversion of HMs in karst rivers during this season.

Application of blockchain technology in food safety control：current trends and future prospects

Blockchain technology is a distributed ledger technology and is expected to face some difficulties and challenges in various industries due to its transparency, decentralization, tamper-proof nature, and encryption security. Food safety has been paid increasing attention in recent years with economic development. Based on a systematic literature critical analysis, the causes of food safety problems and the state-of-the-art blockchain technology overview, including the definition of blockchain, development history, classification, structure, characteristics, and main applications, the feasibility and application prospects of blockchain technology in plant food safety, animal food safety, and processed food safety were proposed in this review. Finally, the challenges of the blockchain technology itself and the difficulties in the application of food safety were analyzed. This study contributes to the extant literature in the field of food safety by discovering the excellent potential of blockchain technology and its implications for food safety control. Our results indicated that blockchain is a promising technology toward a food safety control, with many ongoing initiatives in food products, but many food-related issues, barriers, and challenges still exist. Nevertheless, it is expected to provide a feasible solution for controlling food safety risks.

Seasonal variations on trace element bioaccumulation and trophic transfer along a freshwater food chain in Argentina

Río Tercero Reservoir (RTR) is the largest artificial reservoir in the province of Córdoba (Argentina). Water, sediment, plankton, shrimp (Palaemonetes argentinus), and fish (Odontesthes bonariensis) were collected during the wet season (WS) and dry season (DS) from this reservoir. Concentrations of Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Se, U, and Zn were determined to investigate their respective bioaccumulation pattern and trophic transfer in the food chain. Results showed that their concentrations in water were rather low except Pb, which exceed the limits considered as hazardous for aquatic life. The enrichment factor (EF) in sediments showed that most of the element were derived from anthropogenic sources. Furthermore, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) determined that the elements undergo bioaccumulation, especially in organisms such as plankton. The invertebrates were characterized by the highest BAF for Cu, P, and Zn in both seasons; Ag, As, and Hg during WS; and Se during DS. Fish muscle registered the highest BAF for Hg (DS) and Se (WS). A significant decrease in Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu (DS) Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, U, and Zn (DS) concentrations through the trophic chain was observed, indicating biodilution. Some notable exceptions were found as Cu (WS), Hg (DS), and P (both season) that showed biomagnification. Further studies are needed to establish differential behavior with different species and pollutant, particularly when the potential transfer is to edible organisms.

Uptake, tissue distribution and elimination in a native fish species Astyanax eigenmanniorum exposed to inorganic mercury

The increasing contamination of water bodies with mercury (Hg) raises concerns about the possible effects of this metal on native fish species. Our current understanding of its dynamics in fish organs remains limited. In this study, adult individuals of the native species Astyanax eigenmanniorum were exposed to three environmentally relevant HgCl₂ concentrations (5, 100, and 170 μg L^-1) for 96 h. To evaluate total Hg (THg) elimination, new individuals were exposed to 100 μg L^-1 of HgCl₂ (96 h), and at the end of the exposure period, half of the fish were placed in tanks with clean water for 168 h. In both assays, the organs were removed, and THg levels were measured using ICP-MS. The uptake of IHg in A. eigenmanniorum showed a differential accumulation in the organs. Gills, intestine, and brain were the tissues with the highest THg levels. Finally, no elimination of THg in the water was observed, but intestine and gills significantly removed the THg accumulated. Probably a Hg redistribution through the tissues could take place.

Trace element concentrations in six fish species from freshwater lentic environments and evaluation of possible health risks according to international standards of consumption

Multi-element concentrations (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Sr) were analyzed in the muscle of six fish species (Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus jenynsii, Rhamdia quelen, Bryconamericus iheringii, Astyanax fasciatus, and Odontesthes bonariensis) with different diets and habits from the Río Tercero Reservoir (RTR) in Córdoba, Argentina, during the wet and dry seasons. Besides, potential human health risks, associated with the consumption of these elements, have been assessed considering the average daily intake (EDI) in children and adults. Additionally, the target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were evaluated taking into account the intake by the general population, fishermen, and consumption frequency recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum scientific reference in cardiology in the USA and worldwide. All species presented quantifiable values in muscle for all the analyzed elements (Al, As, Cr, Hg, Ni, Se, and Sr), except for Cd and Pb, being Al and Sr the most accumulated elements in all species in both seasons. The consumption of edible muscles of the species studied in this reservoir represents a toxicological risk to humans. Mercury and As were the main elements that presented a health risk through the consumption of fish. Their concentrations in most fish species were above the maximum daily allowable concentrations, and THQ values were several times greater than 1. In addition, according to AHA recommendations, the cancer risk caused by As was greater than the acceptable value of 10^-4 in all species studied, and in both seasons, with the exception of A. fasciatus, in the rainy season. These results indicate that the consumption of fish from the RTR exposes the inhabitants to possible health risks, especially when considering the consumption frequency recommended by the AHA. Therefore, fish intake from this reservoir should be limited to minimize potential risks to the health of consumers. Finally, the results of this study are useful for controlling pollution and developing preventive and palliative policies to protect populations in contact not only with the reservoir but also with other areas of the world with similar conditions.

Distribution and bioaccumulation of 12 trace elements in water, sediment and tissues of the main fishery from different environments of the La Plata basin (South America): Risk assessment for human consumption

The concentration of Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, U, V, and Zn was analyzed in water, sediment, and different organs of Prochilodus lineatus (muscle, liver and gill) in three most commercially important catch areas along La Plata Basin, namely High Paraná River (HPR), Middle Paraná River (MPR) and Río de la Plata Estuary (RPE). The concentration of As, Cu and Zn (RPE) and Se (HPR) in water and As (RPE), Ni (HPR and MPR), Cu and Cr (all sites) in sediments exceeded the limits considered as hazardous for aquatic life. With the exception of Se (sediment-liver) and Pb (sediment-liver and sediment-gill), it was not observed a significant correlation between the element concentration in tissues and that found in water and sediment. No correlation was found between the size fish and element concentrations. Liver appeared to be the main storage tissue of trace elements and was classified as a macroconcentrator of Ag, Cu, Hg and Zn. Levels of trace elements in muscle of streaked prochilod were below recommended maximum levels established by national and international guidelines. According to Target Hazard Quotient (THQ), the consumption of muscle of P. lineatus from three sampling sites did not present toxicological risk for general and fishermen populations. Multivariate analyses suggest that the three groups studied remain with an important degree of geographical segregation, indicating that regulations should be revised according to the presence of contaminants in the different fishing areas.

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in the coastal Borneo (Malaysia) and health risk assessment

The concentration of nine trace elements were analyzed in the different tissue organs of commonly available crabs (Portunus sanguinolentus, Portunus pelagicus and Scylla serrate) and bivalve (Polymesoda erosa) species collected from the Miri coast, Borneo in order to evaluate the potential health risk by consumption of these aquatic organisms. Among the analyzed organs, metal accumulation was higher in the gill tissues. The essential (Cu and Zn) and non-essential (Pb and Cd) elements showed the highest (i.e. Zn) and lowest concentrations (i.e. Cd) in their tissue organs, respectively. The estimated daily intake and hazard indices of all metals in the muscle indicate that the measured values were below the provisional tolerable daily intake suggested by the joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. Compared to Malaysian and international seafood guideline values the results obtained from the present study are lower than the permissible limits and safe for consumption.
