Abstract
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health burden. The weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), a novel adiposity metric, may improve COPD risk prediction, but its association remains underexplored. Methods Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2018 data (n=15,278), we assessed the WWI-COPD relationship via multivariable logistic regression, ROC analysis, and subgroup evaluations. Results Higher WWI tertiles correlated with elevated COPD incidence. After full adjustment, each WWI unit increase linked to 70% higher COPD risk (OR=1.70, 95% CI: 1.48-1.95). Participants in the highest quartile of WWI faced a 290% increased risk compared to the lowest quartile (OR=3.90, 95% CI: 2.60-5.86). WWI (AUC=0.707) outperformed BMI (AUC=0.525) and waist circumference (AUC=0.609) in COPD prediction. A nonlinear threshold effect emerged at WWI=12.54. Subgroup analyses confirmed robustness across demographics. Conclusion WWI is a simple, cost-effective tool for early COPD detection, outperforming BMI and waist circumference, especially in resource-limited settings, enabling timely intervention and reducing disease burden.

Abstract
The hormone ghrelin serves a protective role in cancer-related anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS)-a condition in which plasma levels of ghrelin rise, its administration lessens CACS severity, and experimentally reduced signaling by its receptor (GHSR) worsens fat loss and anorexia and accelerates death. Yet, actions for the related hormone liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide-2 (LEAP2), which is an endogenous GHSR antagonist, are unexplored in CACS. Here, we found that plasma LEAP2 and LEAP2/ghrelin ratio were lower in Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) and RM-9 prostate cancer CACS mouse models. Ghrelin deletion exaggerated losses of tumor-free body weight and fat mass, reduced food intake, reduced soleus muscle weight, and/or lowered grip strength in LLC or RM-9 tumor-bearing mice. LEAP2 deletion lessened reductions in tumor-free body weight and fat mass and increased food intake in LLC or RM-9 tumor-bearing mice. In a 55-subject cohort of patients with CACS or weight-stable cancer, the plasma LEAP2/total ghrelin ratio was negatively correlated with 6-month weight change preceding blood collection. These data demonstrate that ghrelin deletion exacerbates CACS in the LLC and RM-9 tumor-bearing mouse models while contrastingly, LEAP2 deletion reduces measures of CACS in these tumor-bearing mouse models. Further, they suggest that lower plasma LEAP2/ghrelin ratio protects against worsened CACS.

Abstract
More than any other mental illness, the course, prognosis, and therapy of anorexia nervosa are shaped by the physical changes associated with being underweight. This article provides an overview of the endocrine changes associated with malnutrition and underweight. This overview serves as a basis for understanding the other articles in this special issue, which deal with the health risks associated with being underweight. In this context, the differences between underweight in anorexia nervosa and in constitutional thinness are of particular importance in assessing the impact of intentional weight loss. In this context, the regulation of hunger and satiety deserves special interest, as this is the area in which the intentional influence on body weight comes into play. Clinical consequences on, for example, fertility, bone metabolism, the homeostasis of, for example, serum glucose levels, or body temperature have been observed for a long time; nonetheless, the medical responses, apart from vitamin supplementations and advice to gain weight, are still limited. Therefore, emphasis was placed on the potential improvement of outcomes through the administration of central or peripheral hormones. Studies were identified on PubMed via a selection of relevant keywords; original texts that were cited in reviews were studied where it was advantageous. This review found some promising data on bone health and the administration of transdermal oestrogen, which is not yet widely used, as well as distinct hormonal markers to differentiate between CT and AN. We concluded that the continuous efforts to investigate the role of endocrinology in underweight and/or anorexia nervosa lead to outcome benefits and that more and higher-powered studies are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disease progression in COPD patient is associated to lung function decline, leading to a higher risk of hypoxaemia and associated comorbidities, notably cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Adiponectin (Ad) is an adipokine with cardio-protective properties. In COPD patients, conflicting results were previously reported regarding Ad plasmatic (Adpl) level, probably because COPD is a heterogeneous disease with multifactorial influence. Among these factors, gender and hypoxaemia could interact in a variety of ways with Ad pathway. Therefore, we postulated that these components could influence Adpl level and its multimers in COPD patients and contribute to the appearance of a distinct endotype associated to an altered CVD risk. METHODS One hundred COPD patients were recruited: 61 were men and 39 were women. Patients who were not severely hypoxemic were allocated to non-hypoxemic group which included 46 patients: 27 men and 19 women. Hypoxemic group included 54 patients: 34 men and 20 women. For all patients, Adpl level and proportion of its different forms were measured. Differences between groups were evaluated by Rank-Sum tests. The relationship between these measures and BMI, blood gas analysis (PaO2, PaCO2), or lung function (FEV1, FEV1/FVC, TLCO, TLC, RV) were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS Despite similar age, BMI and obstruction severity, women had a higher TLC and RV (median: TLC = 105%; RV = 166%) than men (median: TLC = 87%; RV = 132%). Adpl level was higher in women (median = 11,152 ng/ml) than in men (median = 10,239 ng/ml) and was negatively associated with hyperinflation (R = - 0,43) and hypercapnia (R = - 0,42). The proportion of the most active forms of Ad (HMW) was increased in hypoxemic women (median = 10%) compared with non-hypoxemic women (median = 8%) but was not modulated in men. CONCLUSION COPD pathophysiology seemed to be different in hypoxemic women and was associated to Ad modulations. Hyperinflation and air-trapping in association with hypercapnia and hypoxaemia, could contribute to a modulation of Adpl level and of its HMW forms. These results suggest the development of a distinct endotypic presentation, based on gender.

Abstract
Background: Patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have
increased risks for a series of physical and mental illnesses. Tumor
necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has been reported to participate in the
development of COPD and its complications. However, the values of blood
TNF-α level used in the diagnosis of COPD remains controversial. In view of
this, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the
correlation between TNF-α level and COPD. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and CNKI up to May 2018. The
selection criteria were set according to the PICOS framework. A
random-effects model was then applied to evaluate the overall effect sizes
by calculating standard mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence
intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 40 articles containing 4189 COPD patients and 1676 healthy
controls were included in this meta-analysis. The results indicated a
significant increase in TNF-α level in the COPD group compared with the
control group (SMD: 1.24, 95% CI: 0.78–1.71,
p < 0.00001). According to the subgroup analyses, we
noted that TNF-α level was associated with predicted first second of forced
expiration (FEV1) (%) and study region. However, no association
between TNF-α level and COPD was found when the participants were
nonsmokers, and the mean age was less than 60 years. Conclusions: Our results indicated that TNF-α level was increased in COPD patients when
compared with healthy controls. Illness progression and a diagnosis of COPD
might contribute to higher TNF-α levels. However, the underlying mechanism

Abstract
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been introduced as a major public health problem. It has been suggested that disruption in function or some adipokines and serum proteins' signaling could play crucial roles in lung diseases. This study's purpose was to investigate the association between serum levels of S100A1, ZAG, and adiponectin with FEV1 in COPD patients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 90 clinically stable outpatient males with age ranging from 40 to 70 years with COPD diagnosis - FEV1/FVC < 70% - were divided into two groups: mild-moderate COPD patients; FEV1 ≥ 50 (n=52) VS severe and very severe COPD patients; FEV1 < 50 (n=38). The serum levels of ZAG, S100A1, and adiponectin were measured by the use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results In the present study, lower FEV1 was significantly associated with increased risk of cachexia (OR = 5.76, 95% CI: 2.28-14.54). The serum level of ZAG was significantly higher in the mild-moderate COPD patients in comparison with the severe-very severe COPD patients (p<0.035). However, the resting metabolic rate (RMR) level was significantly higher in FEV1<50 group compared to FEV1≥50 group (p<0.024). Also, strong positive associations between serum S100A1-ZAG, serum adiponectin-ZAG, and serum adiponectin-S100A1 (β>0.800, p<0.001) were shown. Conclusion In the present study, we found that low FEV1 was associated with increased risk of cachexia in COPD patients. Additionally, lower serum level of ZAG and higher RMR were observed in patients with severe-very severe COPD as compared to mild-moderate COPD. Therefore, it could be claimed that there is a mechanistic chain of causality between FEV1, serum ZAG, RMR, and cachexia.

Abstract
Osteoporosis and osteopenia has a significant link with substantial fracture risk. Epidemiological data revealed a protective role of adipose tissue on bone biology in postmenopausal osteoporosis. The current study assessed the associations between select adipokines and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. A total of 175 Saudi postmenopausal women were selected and categorized based on their BMD (normal & low-BMD). Circulating levels of select adipokines (adiponectin, resistin, leptin, and adipsin), insulin, 25(OH)D and RANKl were determined using commercially available assay kits. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Overall and among low-BMD subjects, adiponectin consistently showed a significant inverse association with BMD (overall −0.34, p < 0.01; low BMD group −0.34, p < 0.01). In multiple regression, adiponectin (−0.29 ± 0.06, p < 0.00) and resistin (−0.08 ± 0.04, p < 0.05) were inversely significant with BMD overall, but after stratification the significance was lost for resistin (−0.05 ± 0.04, p < 0.224) whereas adiponectin remained (−0.22 ± 0.07, p < 0.02) in low-BMD subjects. Adipsin, leptin and lipocalin-2 showed no significant associations. Findings of the present study revealed that only adiponectin showed a significantly strong inverse association with low BMD, suggesting that insulin sensitivity may influence bone health in Arab postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Ghrelin is a peptide hormone that plays a modulatory role in the immune system. Studies have demonstrated that mammal ghrelin level is influenced by pathological status. However, it has not been reported whether chicken ghrelin level changes during pathogen infection. This study was designed to investigate changes of ghrelin levels in chickens infected with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and to explore the relationship between ghrelin changes and bursal damage, and inflammatory cells infiltration induced by IBDV. The results showed that (1) plasma ghrelin concentration increased after IBDV infection. It reached a peak at 10443.6 ± 2612.9 pg/mL on 2 dpi, which was about 100-fold as high as that of the control. Then it decreased sharply on 3 dpi, which was only 31.7% as that of 2 dpi, and remained stable until 5 dpi. Meanwhile, ghrelin and ghrelin-related gene, ghrelin-o-acyltransferase (GOAT), and growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) mRNA expression levels in bursa were also increased after IBDV infection, and reached the peak on 2 dpi at 149, 28.8, and 117.2-fold higher than that of the control, respectively. Then they decreased and remained at a higher status. Correlation analysis showed that plasma ghrelin concentration and ghrelin, GOAT, and GHSR mRNA expressions in bursa were strongly associated with IBDV VP2 mRNA expression in bursa. (2) The damage of bursa was the most severe on 5 dpi with a histopathological score of 12. It had no direct correlation with plasma ghrelin level and ghrelin, GOAT, and GHSR mRNA expressions in bursa. However, the number of inflammatory cells infiltrating into bursa, which was the highest on 2 and 3 dpi, showed significant a positive correlation with the ghrelin and GHSR mRNA expression. Presumably chicken ghrelin may function as an anti-inflammatory factor. In conclusion, IBDV infection upregulates the expression of ghrelin and ghrelin-related gene in chickens, and chicken ghrelin may play an important regulatory role during pathogen infection.

Abstract
Background The main causes of COPD are tobacco smoking (COPD-TS) and biomass smoke exposure (COPD-BS). COPD-TS is known to induce changes in adipokines, incretins, and peptide hormones, frequent biomarkers of inflammation; however, it is unknown if similar changes occur in COPD-BS. Methods Clinical and physiological characteristics, and serum concentration of C-peptide, ghrelin, GIP, GLP-1, glucagon, insulin, leptin, PAI-1, resistin, and visfatin were measured in women with COPD-BS, COPD-TS, and healthy controls. Data were compared with one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test; nonparametric were expressed as median (interquartile ranges), with Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s post-hoc test. Multivariate analysis, age, BMI, MS, and FEV1% pred with levels of inflammatory mediators in COPD women. Results FEV1% pred, FVC% pred, and FEV1/FVC ratio were decremented in COPD. In COPD-TS increased C-peptide, ghrelin, GIP, GLP-1, and leptin, and reduced glucagon, PAI-1, resistin, and visfatin. In COPD-BS enlarged ghrelin, insulin, leptin, and PAI-1 comparatively with COPD-TS and control, while C-peptide and GLP-1 relatively with controls; conversely, glucagon, and resistin were reduced. Multivariate analysis showed association of ghrelin, insulin, PAI-1, and visfatin with BS exposure. Conclusions women with COPD-BS have a distinct profile of adipokines, incretins, and peptide hormones, and specifically with ghrelin, insulin, PAI-1, and visfatin related to BS exposure.

Abstract
In the current study, we sought to determine the significance of the ghrelin system in Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). PWS is characterized by hypotonia and difficulty feeding in neonates and hyperphagia and obesity beginning later in childhood. Other features include low GH, neonatal hypoglycemia, hypogonadism, and accelerated mortality. Although the hyperphagia and obesity in PWS have been attributed to elevated levels of the orexigenic hormone ghrelin, this link has never been firmly established, nor have ghrelin's potentially protective actions to increase GH secretion, blood glucose, and survival been investigated in a PWS context. In the current study, we show that placing Snord116del mice modeling PWS on ghrelin-deficient or ghrelin receptor [GH secretagogue receptor (GHSR)]-deficient backgrounds does not impact their characteristically reduced body weight, lower plasma IGF-1, delayed sexual maturation, or increased mortality in the period prior to weaning. However, blood glucose was further reduced in male Snord116del pups on a ghrelin-deficient background, and percentage body weight gain and percentage fat mass were further reduced in male Snord116del pups on a GHSR-deficient background. Strikingly, 2 weeks of daily administration of the GHSR agonist HM01 to Snord116del neonates markedly improved survival, resulting in a nearly complete rescue of the excess mortality owing to loss of the paternal Snord116 gene. These data support further exploration of the therapeutic potential of GHSR agonist administration in limiting PWS mortality, especially during the period characterized by failure to thrive.

Abstract
Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for growth hormone secretagogue receptor, has been implicated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recently, several studies reported inconsistent levels of ghrelin in plasma/serum of COPD patients. This meta-analysis aims to determine the circulating level of ghrelin in COPD. Published case–control or cohort studies were retrieved from Pubmed and Embase databases. Pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated in a random-effects model. Nine studies involving 515 subjects were included. Pooled effect size showed that circulating ghrelin levels were significantly enhanced in COPD patients compared with those in controls (SMD: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.04 to 1.62, p = 0.039). Noticeably, five studies stratified for body mass index in COPD group and we further found ghrelin levels were significantly higher in underweight COPD patients than those in normal weight cases (SMD: 1.52, 95% CI: 0.43 to 2.61, p = 0.006). However, no significant difference regarding ghrelin levels was indicated between normal weight COPD and controls (SMD: 0.64, 95% CI: −0.36 to 1.63, p = 0.210). In this meta-analysis, circulating level of ghrelin is significantly elevated in patients with COPD, especially in those underweight, indicating supplement with exogenous ghrelin could be a therapeutic choice for underweight COPD patients.

Abstract
Background Emphysema is a progressive disease characterized by irreversible airspace enlargement followed by a decline in lung function. It also causes extrapulmonary effects, such as loss of body mass and cor pulmonale, which are associated with shorter survival and worse clinical outcomes. Ghrelin, a growth-hormone secretagogue, stimulates muscle anabolism, has anti-inflammatory effects, promotes vasodilation, and improves cardiac performance. Therefore, we hypothesized that ghrelin might reduce lung inflammation and remodelling as well as improve lung mechanics and cardiac function in experimental emphysema. Methods Forty female C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned into two main groups: control (C) and emphysema (ELA). In the ELA group (n=20), animals received four intratracheal instillations of pancreatic porcine elastase (PPE) at 1-week intervals. C animals (n=20) received saline alone (50 μL) using the same protocol. Two weeks after the last instillation of saline or PPE, C and ELA animals received ghrelin or saline (n=10/group) intraperitoneally (i.p.) daily, during 3 weeks. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), echocardiography, lung mechanics, histology, and molecular biology were analysed. Results In elastase-induced emphysema, ghrelin treatment decreased alveolar hyperinflation and mean linear intercept, neutrophil infiltration, and collagen fibre content in the alveolar septa and pulmonary vessel wall; increased elastic fibre content; reduced M1-macrophage populations and increased M2 polarization; decreased levels of keratinocyte-derived chemokine (KC, a mouse analogue of interleukin-8), tumour necrosis factor-α, and transforming growth factor-β, but increased interleukin-10 in lung tissue; augmented static lung elastance; reduced arterial pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy on echocardiography; and increased lean mass. Conclusion In the elastase-induced emphysema model used herein, ghrelin not only reduced lung damage but also improved cardiac function and increased lean mass. These findings should prompt further studies to evaluate ghrelin as a potential therapy for emphysema. Abstract
Ghrelin was discovered in 1999 as the endogenous ligand of the growth-hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR1a). Since then, ghrelin has been found to exert a plethora of physiological effects that go far beyond its initial characterization as a growth hormone (GH) secretagogue. Among the numerous well-established effects of ghrelin are the stimulation of appetite and lipid accumulation, the modulation of immunity and inflammation, the stimulation of gastric motility, the improvement of cardiac performance, the modulation of stress, anxiety, taste sensation and reward-seeking behavior, as well as the regulation of glucose metabolism and thermogenesis. Due to a variety of beneficial effects on systems’ metabolism, pharmacological targeting of the endogenous ghrelin system is widely considered a valuable approach to treat metabolic complications, such as chronic inflammation, gastroparesis or cancer-associated anorexia and cachexia. The aim of this review is to discuss and highlight the broad pharmacological potential of ghrelin pathway modulation for the treatment of anorexia, cachexia, sarcopenia, cardiopathy, neurodegenerative disorders, renal and pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, inflammatory disorders and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a major comorbidity of cardio-respiratory diseases, but the mechanistic links between pulmonary arterial hypertension and bone remain elusive. The purpose of the stud was to evaluate serum adipokines and endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in the patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) NYHA class III-IV and to determine its associations with bone mineral density (BMD). Pulmonary and hemodynamic parameters, BMD Z-scores at the lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN), serum leptin, adiponectin, visfatin and endothelin-1 (ET-1), were evaluated in 32 patients with IPAH NYHA class III-IV and 30 healthy volunteers. Leptin, adiponectin and ET-1 were higher in the patients with IPAH than in healthy subjects. Visfatin level showed a tendency to increase compared to that of healthy subjects (p = 0.076). The univariate analysis revealed a positive correlation between BMD Z-scores at both sites and 6-min walk test, and inverse relation with pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP). Adiponectin and visfatin showed positive correlations with PVR (p = 0.009 and p = 0.006). Serum adiponectin, visfatin and leptin were inversely associated with Z-scores. After adjusting for BMI and FMI, such associations persisted between visfatin and adiponectin levels and Z-scores at both sites. ET-1 related to mPAP, cardiac index and PVR. Negative correlation was observed between ET-1 and FN BMD (p = 0.01). Positive correlations have revealed between ET-1 and adiponectin (p = 0.02), visfatin (p = 0.004) in IPAH patients. These results provide further evidence that adipokine and endothelial dysregulation may cause not only a decrease in BMD, but also an increase in hemodynamic disorders of IPAH.

Abstract
With aging and other muscle wasting diseases, men and women undergo similar pathological changes in skeletal muscle: increased inflammation, enhanced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, satellite cell senescence, elevated apoptosis and proteasome activity, and suppressed protein synthesis and myocyte regeneration. Decreased food intake and physical activity also indirectly contribute to muscle wasting. Sex hormones also play important roles in maintaining skeletal muscle homeostasis. Testosterone is a potent anabolic factor promoting muscle protein synthesis and muscular regeneration. Estrogens have a protective effect on skeletal muscle by attenuating inflammation; however, the mechanisms of estrogen action in skeletal muscle are less well characterized than those of testosterone. Age- and/or disease-induced alterations in sex hormones are major contributors to muscle wasting. Hence, men and women may respond differently to catabolic conditions because of their hormonal profiles. Here we review the similarities and differences between men and women with common wasting conditions including sarcopenia and cachexia due to cancer, end-stage renal disease/chronic kidney disease, liver disease, chronic heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease based on the literature in clinical studies. In addition, the responses in men and women to the commonly used therapeutic agents and their efficacy to improve muscle mass and function are also reviewed.

Abstract
Background. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an important pro-inflammatory cytokine and has been implicated to play a role in the systemic inflammation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We conducted this meta-analysis to assess the association between serum IL-6 concentrations and COPD. Methods. PubMed and Embase were searched for eligible studies. Data were extracted by two investigators (Wei J, Xiong XF) independently and analyzed using Review Manager 5.3 and STATA 12.0 software. Standard mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Results. Thirty-three studies were included in this meta-analysis. The serum IL-6 concentrations were higher in patients with stable COPD than healthy controls (SMD = 0.65, 95% CI [0.51–0.79]). COPD patients without major comorbidities also showed higher IL-6 levels than healthy controls (SMD = 0.74, 95% CI [0.56–0.91]). COPD patients with an forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of either <50% predicted or >50% predicted had increased IL-6 concentrations compared to healthy controls (SMD = 0.77, 95% CI [0.48–1.05], SMD = 1.01, 95% CI [0.43–1.59], respectively). The serum IL-6 concentrations between mild-moderate and severe-very severe COPD patient groups were not found to be significant (SMD = −0.1, 95% CI [−0.65–0.44]). Conclusions. This meta-analysis indicated that patients with stable COPD had higher serum IL-6 concentrations than healthy controls. No evidence showing positive or negative association between IL-6 concentrations and the severity of pulmonary function impairment was found. The correlation between IL-6 levels and pulmonary function was weak in different severities of stable COPD patients.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking, which is a well-known major risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), causes both pulmonary and extrapulmonary abnormalities. Ghrelin is a gastric peptide that regulates energy homeostasis. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ghrelin on the catabolic changes, respiratory function and emphysema in an animal model of COPD induced by chronic exposure to cigarette smoke. Rats were exposed to cigarette smoke, and they were administered human ghrelin (0.1 or 1 mg/kg, subcutaneous, twice daily) for 12 weeks. Compared with air-exposed rats, body weight gain, food intake, food efficiency, tidal volume, peak expiratory flow rate, and forced expiratory volume at 100 ms were significantly lower, while functional residual capacity, lung capacity, and neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were significantly higher in cigarette smoke-exposed rats. These indicated that the systemic abnormalities associated with COPD developed after the exposure to cigarette smoke. Ghrelin significantly and dose-dependently increased the body weight gain and food efficiency in cigarette smoke-exposed rats. In ghrelin-treated rats, skeletal muscle strength, which tended to be lowered by cigarette smoke exposure, was improved. Ghrelin ameliorated respiratory function and emphysema in a dose-dependent manner, but did not inhibit the increase in neutrophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The respiratory functional parameters and lung capacity were significantly correlated with body weight gain. These results suggest that ghrelin inhibited the development of the catabolic changes, respiratory dysfunction, and emphysema that were induced by cigarette smoke exposure in rats, at least in part, through the amelioration of nutritional status.
