Abstract
PURPOSE Depression is one of the main psychological responses experienced by patients with breast cancer perioperatively. Therefore, this review aimed to synthesize the prevalence rate of depression preoperatively among patients with breast cancer. METHODS Six databases were searched for published articles, which recruited female patients aged 18 years and above, diagnosed with breast cancer and planned for breast surgery. Grey literatures were searched from ProQuest Theses and Dissertations, Science.gov and CogPrints. Studies published in English from the inception of databases to January 2023 were considered. Two reviewers screened, extracted, and appraised the data independently. Joanna Briggs Institute data collection form was used for data collection. Hoy's Risk of Bias Tool was utilized to assess the individual study's quality. Review Manager 5.4 software was utilized for meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the reasons for any heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated by Egger's test and funnel plot. RESULTS Twenty studies involving 32,143 patients with breast cancer were included. Meta-analyses revealed an overall preoperative prevalence of 30% among all studies. Subgroup analyses showed that studies conducted in the Middle East and North Africa used purposive sampling, with patients undergoing mastectomy and lumpectomy and with moderate risk of bias reported higher prevalence of preoperative depression (54%, 44%, 40%, and 49%, respectively) as compared to other respective subgroups. CONCLUSION The high prevalence of preoperative depression among women with breast cancer indicated the need for health care professionals to provide more psychological support to them.

Abstract
Breast cancer patients experience treatment-related pain from surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and long-term hormonal treatment, which can lead to poorer outcomes. Patient and family caregivers' psychosocial distress exacerbates patient pain interference, but this has not been directly examined among breast cancer patients in dyadic models longitudinally. Guided by a biopsychosocial framework, the Biobehavioral Family Model, we explore how multiple reports of patient pain interference across the first year of treatment are linked to the patient (N = 55) and caregiver (N = 55) pretreatment psychosocial distress (eg, depression, anxiety, marital satisfaction, family relationship quality). Specifically, we find that breast cancer patients' pain interference increases and then decreases over the first year of treatment. Additionally, caregivers' pretreatment anxiety was associated with increased patient pain interference over time (B = .19, SE = .07, P = .008), while patients' pretreatment psychosocial distress was not associated with a change in their pain interference. Yet, looking at clinically specific times during the first year of treatment, we find that caregiver-reported higher marital satisfaction is associated with lower patient-reported pain interference later in treatment (6 months: B = -.58, SE = .24, P = .017; 12 months: B = -.82, SE = .23, P < .001). We conclude that, per the Biobehavioral Family Model, pretreatment patient and caregiver psychosocial distress is linked to patient pain interference during the first year of breast cancer treatment. Thus, caregivers' psychosocial distress (ie, anxiety and marital satisfaction) may be a particularly important target in future dyadic behavioral intervention strategies to reduce breast cancer patient pain. PERSPECTIVE: This article presents the link between breast cancer patients and family caregiver pretreatment psychosocial distress (anxiety, depression, marital satisfaction, and family quality) on patient pain interference during 1 year of breast cancer treatment. Findings suggest that caregiver anxiety and marital satisfaction may be important targets for future dyadic behavioral pain interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and pain are common symptoms reported by patients with breast cancer. Recent evidence suggests that palpitations, a feeling of the heart racing or pounding, may be equally common. Study purpose was to compare the severity and clinically meaningful occurrence rates of common symptoms and quality of life (QOL) outcomes between patients with breast cancer who did and did not report palpitations prior to surgery. METHODS Patients (n = 398) were classified as having or not having palpitations using a single item from the Menopausal Symptoms Scale. Valid and reliable measures were used to assess state and trait anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, fatigue, energy, cognitive function, breast symptoms, and QOL. Between group differences were evaluated using parametric and non-parametric tests. RESULTS Patients with palpitations (15.1%) reported significantly higher severity scores for state and trait anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and fatigue as well as significant decrements in energy and cognitive function (all p < .05). A higher percentage of these patients had clinically meaningful levels of state anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance and decrements in cognitive function (all p < .05). Except for spiritual well-being, QOL scores were lower in the palpitations group (all p < .001). CONCLUSION Findings support the need for routine assessment of palpitations and management of multiple symptoms in women prior to breast cancer surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer surgery is associated with upper-body morbidities that may last several years postsurgery. Research has not determined if the type of surgery leads to differential effects on shoulder function, activity levels, and QoL during the early rehabilitation period. The main objective of this study is to examine changes in shoulder function, health, and fitness outcomes from the day before to surgery to 6 months postsurgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS We recruited breast cancer patients (N = 70) scheduled to receive breast cancer surgery at Severance Hospital in Seoul to participate in this prospective study. Shoulder range of motion (ROM) and upper body strength, the disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (quick-DASH), body composition, physical activity levels, and QoL were measured at baseline (presurgery) and then weekly for 4 weeks, and at 3 months and 6 months postsurgery. RESULTS During 6 months after surgery, shoulder ROM was reduced only affected arm while shoulder strength was significantly declined in both affected and unaffected arms. Within 4 weeks postsurgery, patients who underwent total mastectomy were significantly less recovered than patients with partial mastectomy in ROM of flexion (P < .05) and abduction (P < .05). However, shoulder strength of both arms observed no interaction between surgical type and time. We observed significant changes in body composition, quick-DASH score, physical activity levels, and QoL from presurgery to 6-months postsurgery. CONCLUSIONS Shoulder function, activity levels, and QoL improved significantly from surgery to 6-months postsurgery. Surgery type influenced changes in shoulder ROM.

Effect of multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education on psychological distress and quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education on psychological distress and quality of life (QoL) in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS A quasi-experimental study was conducted using repeated measures at pre- and post-intervention in the fourth chemotherapy cycle. Sixty patients with colorectal cancer aged 36-84 years were allocated to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received multidisciplinary empowerment education, while the control group received routine health education. Psychological distress involving depression and anxiety symptoms was assessed using The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) and QoL was measured using The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTCQLQ-C30). Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to examine intervention effects. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software (version 26.0). RESULTS Psychological distress was considerably lower and QoL was considerably better in patients following multidisciplinary empowerment education in the intervention group than those in the control group. In addition, psychological distress significantly decreased and QoL improved in the intervention group compared to baseline. CONCLUSION Multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education was effective in improving the psychological distress and QoL among patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. These findings suggest that the establishment of multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education might be considered as an innovative means of clinical patient education during combination chemotherapy to improve health outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer. However, our results should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size. Further validation in a larger sample or randomized controlled design is necessary in the future.

Abstract
Background: Breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancer are among the most common causes of morbidity and mortality of women in Poland. In 2016, breast cancer was the most common cause of morbidity and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, endometrial cancer was the third most common cause of morbidity and the seventh leading cause of death, and ovarian cancer was the fifth most common cause of morbidity and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in women. The aim of the study was to assess the strategy of pain control, acceptance of the cancer and adjustment to life with disease in women with ovarian cancer, endometrial and breast cancer. This study shows how level of pain control, acceptance, and adjustment can differ among patients with the three kinds of cancer and which factors have the most influence on patients’ adjustment to the disease. Methods: The study was carried out with 481 patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer, endometrial and breast cancer. In the study BPCQ, CSQ, AIS and Mini-MAC questionnaires were used. Results: In the BPCQ questionnaire the highest result was acquired in the scope of the impact of doctors (M = 16.45, SD = 4.30), differentiated by cancer location and socio-economic variables. In the CSQ test, the highest result was achieved by praying/hoping, differentiated by cancer location and socio-economic variables. The average AIS acceptance score was M = 27.48 (SD = 7.68). The highest result of the Mini-Mac scale was obtained by patients in the area of fighting spirit (M = 22.94, SD = 3.62), and these results depended on socio-economic and treatment-related variables but were not differentiated by cancer location. Conclusions: Patients attribute the highest importance in the disease to the influence of physicians, praying/hoping, and fighting spirit. The awareness of the pain management strategies of patients with cancer allows appropriate psychological support to be designed for specific groups of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be a turning point with negative impacts on mental health, treatment and prognosis. This meta-analysis sought to determine the nature and prevalence of clinically significant psychological distress-related symptoms in the wake of a breast cancer diagnosis. METHODS Ten databases were searched between March and August 2020. Thirty-nine quantitative studies were meta-analysed. RESULTS The prevalence of clinically significant symptoms was 39% for non-specific distress (n = 13), 34% for anxiety (n = 19), 31% for post-traumatic stress (n = 7) and 20% for depression (n = 25). No studies reporting breast cancer patients' well-being in our specific time frame were found. CONCLUSION Mental health can be impacted in at least four domains following a diagnosis of breast cancer and such effects are commonplace. This study outlines a clear need for mitigating the impacts on mental health brought about by breast cancer diagnosis. CRD42020203990.

Abstract
Background: The physical, psychological, social, and spiritual quality of life (QoL) may be affected by breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, with mixed findings for psychological quality of life and cognitive ability performance. The present study aimed to evaluate QoL in women over 1 year from biopsy for a breast abnormality. Methods: Self-reported measures of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual QoL were obtained after biopsy results but prior to treatment initiation (baseline), 4 and 12 months later. CogState computerized neuropsychological screening battery also provided an evaluation of psychological QoL. Three groups of women including those with benign biopsy results, those with malignancy treated with chemotherapy, and those with malignancy not treated with chemotherapy were compared at 4 and 12 months after adjusting for baseline to isolate the effects of treatment. Additional covariates included are age, level of education, and income. Results: Benign biopsy results group included 72 women, whereas malignancy was found in 87 women of whom 33 were treated with chemotherapy and 54 without chemotherapy. At the time of diagnosis, women with cancer had worse psychological and social QoL but better spiritual QoL than those with benign biopsy results. Only CogState monitoring accuracy was worse for women with cancer compared with the controls at the time of biopsy results. After adjusting for QoL at baseline, women treated for cancer had worse physical and social QoL at 4 and 12 months later. Psychological well-being was worse for women with cancer at 4th month but improved at 1 year. No differences in cognition were found at 4 and 12 months when adjusted for baseline cognition and covariates. Discussion: Breast cancer is a traumatic life event for women, affecting psychological and social QoL domains, yet increasing spiritual QoL. Later, cancer treatment worsens physical, psychological, and social QoL compared with those without cancer. Conclusions: These findings suggest that interventions to improve psychological QoL may be especially important at the time of cancer diagnosis, while interventions to improve physical well-being are the most needed during and following cancer treatment. Support to improve social QoL is needed from the time of diagnosis into post-treatment survivorship.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to assess the sleep quality of patients with the complaint of non-cyclical breast pain (NCBP), compare them to a healthy control group, and analyze the interrelationship of sleep quality with pain, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in consecutive women presenting to the general surgery clinic between May 2020 and December 2020. Patients diagnosed with NCBP formed one group for study and 44 receiving routine well-woman care formed the control group. Evaluations were undertaken using the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results Of 160 consecutive patients, 116 were diagnosed with NCBP and 44 controls. Poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5) was present in 59% (n = 69) of the women with NCBP and 38% (n = 17) of the controls (p = 0.018). According to PSQI global score, overall sleep quality was significantly lower in the NCBP group compared to the control group (p < 0.007). Sleep latency, sleep duration, and daytime dysfunction were the major components determining the PSQI global score (p = 0.004, p = 0.004, and p < 0.001, respectively). The correlation matrix revealed a statistically significant correlation between the HAD-A, HAD-D, and SF-MSQ and NHP subgroups and PSQI global score in the NCBP group (p < 0.001) whereas this significant correlation was detected with only the NHP subgroups among the controls. Conclusions A considerable proportion of NCBP patients, regardless of sensory or affective characteristics and trajectory of pain, experience significant sleep disturbances. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate the existence of central sensitization syndrome in NCBP patients to determine the required pharmacological treatment.

Abstract
Objective: This study clarifies the relationship between resilience and anxiety and depression, quality of life (QOL), and other related factors that influence colorectal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This cross-sectional study focused on outpatients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. A questionnaire including the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the MOS 12-item Short-Form Health Survey, and items based on a literature review was administered between August 2019 and August 2020. SPSS version 26 was used for data analysis. Correlation analysis and t-test were applied. In addition, Amos version 26 was used and structural equation modeling was applied to create a causal model. Results: A total of 121 participants (94.5%) were included in the study. The goodness of fit (GFI) of the causal model was GFI = 0.94, adjusted GFI = 0.906, comparative fit index = 0.997, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.011. Resilience had a negative effect on anxiety and depression and a positive effect on QOL. Depression had a negative effect on QOL. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that resilience is a predictor of anxiety, depression, and QOL in colorectal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Therefore, I believe that it is important to enhance resilience in order to maintain and improve patients’ mental health and QOL. In addition, since resilience was affected by cancer metastasis and the presence of metastasis was a predictor of resilience, it is a challenge to explore interventions to enhance resilience, especially in patients with metastasis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pain related to cancer, despite the numerous treatment options available, is still a challenge in contemporary pain medicine. The unsatisfactory treatment of cancer pain is one of the main reasons why patients seek complementary and alternative methods (CAM) and a more integrative/holistic approach to pain management. The popularity of CAM forces healthcare professionals to provide patients with current and evidence-based information on the effectiveness and safety of CAM. The aim of the paper is to present current evidence and limitations regarding CAM commonly used in the pain management of cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The paper comprehensively reviews the current and most relevant literature considering the integrative approach to management of pain due to cancer disease and/or cancer treatment. RESULTS The available data from clinical trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews supports the effectiveness of acupuncture, massage, physical exercises, music therapy, and mind-body therapies as adjunct therapies for alleviating pain in cancer patients, although the supporting evidence is weak or moderate. CONCLUSIONS Based on the available knowledge, physicians should be capable of advising the cancer patient as to which CAM methods can be used safely, which are contraindicated, and what therapeutic effects they may expect, especially when standard pain treatment fails or induces serious side effects. An integrative approach to cancer pain management may improve the quality of pain treatment, patients' quality of life, and satisfaction with pain relief.

Abstract
Breast pain is a concern in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, quantifiable using validated tools, and may pre-exist or appear after initiation of a HRT. OBJECTIVES A review of the literature was conducted to evaluate the frequency of breast pain, its evolution with age, its changes under HRT, its link with a possible risk of subsequent breast cancer, and the diagnostic (breast imaging) or therapeutic management modalities (pharmacological or other) in women taking HRT. METHOD A review of the literature was carried out by consulting Medline, Cochrane Library data and international recommendations in French and English up to the end of 2019. RESULTS Published data confirm the importance of breast pain in relation to breast cancer risk. Women with breast pain prior to or related to the use of HRT have a significantly increased risk of breast cancer compared to women without breast pain. The risk is increased in cases of moderate to severe breast pain. In the presence of diffuse breast pain without abnormalities on clinical examination, it is not recommended to change the usual indications for screening, whether organized or individual. For focal breast pain, breast imaging (mammography and possibly ultrasound) is recommended. In the absence of abnormalities on breast imaging, a reassuring dialogue has to take place. With regard to HRT, doses of estrogens should be reduced until the breast pain decreases, or even stop the HRT if this symptom persists despite the use of low doses. Wearing a bra brassiere-type can also reduce breast pain.

Abstract
ISSUE ADDRESSED This study examined breast cancer survivors' (BCS) views on the role of exercise therapy while they were working in employment during cancer treatment. METHODS Research was undertaken with five participants who undertook an exercise programme as adjuvant care during treatment for breast cancer. Four female and one male client, the only clients who met the criteria for study in the clinic, were interviewed twice each during a two-month period. Participants wrote diaries to supplement the interview data and provide prompts for the second interview. An interpretive paradigm was used to identify themes for analysis. A multiple coding approach was used to interpret the data. The study was conducted at a small breast cancer recovery clinic, situated at a university in the South Island of New Zealand. RESULTS Participants reported that exercise was essential to their ability to work through the active treatment phase and provided positive effects on social, mental and emotional well-being. CONCLUSIONS Exercise therapy is an important element of enabling to work during treatment, for physical, mental and social well-being. SO WHAT?: Future research is required on support for employers to enable exercise therapy for employees; the needs of self-employed patients; tailoring exercise therapy for patients for whom social support is not a primary motivation; and the place of a clinic as a 'middle-ground' between social and emotional support and an exercise clinic.

Abstract
Background: Pain, a distinctive undesirable experience, encompasses several different and fluctuating presentations across varying mood disorders. Therefore, the present narrative review aimed to shed further light on the matter, accounting for both experimental animal models and clinical observations about major depressive disorder (MDD) pathology. Method: Major databases were inquired from inception until April 2016 for records about MDD and pain. Results: Pain and MDD are tightly associated with each other in a bi-directional fashion. Several cross-sectional and retrospective studies indicated a high presence of pain in the context of mood disorders, including MDD (up to 65%), but also increased prevalence rates in the case of mood disorders documented among people with a primary diagnosis of either psychological or somatic pain (prevalence rates exceeding 45%). The clinical implications of these observations suggest the need to account for mood and pain manifestations as a whole rather than distinct entities in order to deliver more effective interventions. Limitations: Narrative review, lack of systematic control groups (e.g., people with the primary diagnosis at review, but not the associated comorbidity as a study) to allow reliable comparisons. Prevalence rates and clinical features associated with pain varied across different studies as corresponding operational definitions did. Conclusions: Pain may have a detrimental effect on the course of mood disorders-the opposite holds. Promoting a timely recognition and management of such an often neglected comorbidity would therefore represent a primary goal toward the delivery of effective, multi-disciplinary care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer treatment is an aggressive therapy that affects the deterioration of women's quality of life (QOL) in many areas. Knowledge about factors that influence the assessment of the QOL is of particular importance. The aim of the study was to analyse areas of the quality of life of women with breast cancer, taking into account social and demographic factors. METHODS The research was carried included 324 women with breast cancer. The research was carried out using a diagnostic survey, the author's questionnaire and a standardized questionnaire for measuring the QOL of women treated for breast cancer, ie the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and QLQ-QLQ module BR23. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The National Institutes of Health Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) is a multidimensional screening system evaluating biopsychosocial factors affecting pain and functioning. Using a military sample, the current study 1) examined the structure and domains of the PROMIS, the Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale 2.0 (DVPRS), and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) within a presurgical setting and 2) examined the relationship of these variables to pre- and postsurgical opioid use. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 279 adult patients scheduled for surgery at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and a validation sample of 79 additional patients from the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. PROMIS, DVPRS, PCS, and opioid use data were collected before surgery. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis identified the latent structure for the measures. A structural equation model (SEM) examined their relationship to pre- and postsurgical opioid use. RESULTS Two latent factors represented Psychosocial Functioning (PROMIS Depression, PROMIS Anxiety, and PROMIS Social Isolation) and Pain Impact (DVPRS, PROMIS Pain Interference, PROMIS Physical Functioning). The remaining PROMIS scales did not load onto a single factor. In the SEM, the two latent factors and PCS were significantly related to pre- and postsurgical opioid use. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the utility and relative ease of using a convenient multidimensional assessment in presurgical settings. Using such an assessment can help provide targeted interventions for individuals who may be at greatest risk for negative postsurgical outcomes.

Influence of Menopausal Status on the Symptom Experience of Women Before Breast Cancer Surgery. Cancer Nurs 2019; 41:265-278. Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer treatments can change women's hormonal milieu and alter their symptom experience. Little is known about associations between menopausal status and menopausal symptoms in women with breast cancer before surgery. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate for differences in occurrence, severity, and distress of symptoms between premenopausal and postmenopausal women before breast cancer surgery. METHODS A total of 312 women with breast cancer completed the Menopausal Symptoms Scale, a self-report measure that evaluated the occurrence, severity, and distress of 46 common symptoms associated with menopause. Regression analyses were used to evaluate for between-group differences in these symptoms. RESULTS Of the 312 patients enrolled, 37.4% (n = 116) were premenopausal, and 62.6% (n = 196) were postmenopausal. In the multivariate analysis that adjusted for 7 covariates, premenopausal patients reported higher occurrence rates for urinary frequency (P = .006) and reported lower occurrence rates for joint pain/stiffness (P = .011), difficulty falling asleep (P = .025), and vaginal dryness (P = .002). A significant interaction was found between age and menopausal status for hot flashes (P = .002), wake during the night (P = .025), and headache (P = .040). CONCLUSION Regardless of menopausal status, women reported high occurrence rates for several menopausal symptoms. Associations between some symptom occurrence rates and menopausal status depended on the patients' age. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE As part of a preoperative symptom assessment, clinicians need to consider a woman's menopausal status and salient demographic and clinical characteristics. The identification of women with a higher symptom burden will assist with more effective management.

Abstract
PURPOSE Depression in patients with breast cancer imposes huge costs to patients, families, and healthcare systems. The present study aimed at evaluating the global prevalence depression among patients with breast cancer. METHODS In this meta-analysis, three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched from 1 January, 2000 until 30 March, 2019. The Hoy tool was used to evaluate the quality of the articles included in the meta-analysis. The search, screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction were carried out by two of the researchers. RESULTS Of 47,424 studies, 72 studies performed in 30 countries entered the final stage of analysis. The global prevalence of depression was 32.2%. Specifically, the prevalence of depression was highest in the Eastern Mediterranean region and twice as high in middle-income countries as compared to developed countries. CONCLUSIONS Regarding the high prevalence of depression in patients with breast cancer, it is vital to carry out screening within standard time periods and offer the necessary emotional support.

Abstract
Moderate-to-severe pain is a common problem experienced by patients with cancer. Although analgesic drugs are effective, adverse side effects are common and some analgesic drugs are addictive. Nonpharmacological treatment may be a way to treat cancer pain without causing negative side effects. Mindfulness is used as an effective nonpharmacological treatment to improve quality of life (QoL) and to address psychological problems including distress, anxiety, stress, and depression. However, the effect of mindfulness on pain severity has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, a systematic review was undertaken to describe the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions for pain and its underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms. The search was conducted in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and CINAHL and included only empirical studies published from 2008 to 2017. Search terms included mindfulness, mindfulness-based intervention, meditation, cancer, pain, and cancer-related pain. Six studies met the search criteria. These studies tested several types of intervention including mindfulness-based stress reduction, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, meditation with massage, and mindful awareness practices. Study outcomes include improved pain severity, anxiety, stress, depression, and QoL. However, most studies reviewed were conducted in the United States and Denmark. Further research is needed to test culturally appropriate mindfulness interventions to reduce pain.

Abstract
Effective symptom management is a critical component of cancer treatment. Computational tools that predict the course and severity of these symptoms have the potential to assist oncology clinicians to personalize the patient's treatment regimen more efficiently and provide more aggressive and timely interventions. Three common and inter-related symptoms in cancer patients are depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. In this paper, we elaborate on the efficiency of Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Non-linear Canonical Correlation Analysis by Neural Networks (n-CCA) to predict the severity of the aforementioned symptoms between two different time points during a cycle of chemotherapy (CTX). Our results demonstrate that these two methods produced equivalent results for all three symptoms. These types of predictive models can be used to identify high risk patients, educate patients about their symptom experience, and improve the timing of pre-emptive and personalized symptom management interventions.

Abstract
Cancer rehabilitation in breast cancer survivors is well established, and there are many studies that focus on interventions to treat impairments as well as therapeutic exercise. However, very little is known about the role of prehabilitation for people with breast cancer. In this narrative review, we describe contemporary clinical management of breast cancer and associated treatment-related morbidity and mortality considerations. Knowing the common short- and long-term sequelae, as well as less frequent but serious sequelae, informs our rationale for multimodal breast cancer prehabilitation. We suggest 5 core components that may help to mitigate short- and long-term sequelae that align with consensus opinion of prehabilitation experts: total body exercise; locoregional exercise pertinent to treatment-related deficits; nutritional optimization; stress reduction/psychosocial support; and smoking cessation. In each of these categories, we review the literature and discuss how they may affect outcomes for women with breast cancer.

Abstract
CONTEXT Approximately 60% to 100% of women with breast cancer experience at least one menopausal-related symptom. Little is known about associations between menopausal status and symptoms in women 12 months after breast cancer surgery. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate for differences in occurrence, severity, and distress of symptoms between pre- and postmenopausal women 12 months after breast cancer surgery. METHODS Women with breast cancer (n = 327) completed the Menopausal Symptoms Scale, which evaluated the occurrence, severity, and distress of 46 common menopausal-related symptoms. Regression analyses were used to evaluate between-group differences in the seven symptoms that occurred in 30% and more of the sample (i.e., hot flashes, night sweats, depression, daytime sweats, joint pain or stiffness, wake during the night, and numbness or tingling). RESULTS Of the 327 patients with breast cancer, who completed the 12-month assessment, 35.2% were premenopausal and 64.8% were postmenopausal before surgery. In the conditional models, when significant interactions were found, the differences in symptom occurrence rates between pre- and postmenopausal patients depended on their age. CONCLUSION Regardless of menopausal status, women reported relatively high occurrence rates for several menopausal symptoms. Associations between symptom occurrence rates and menopausal status depended on the patient's age. During the development of a survivorship care plan, clinicians need to assess symptom burden within the context of a woman's menopausal status and salient demographic and clinical characteristics. This approach will assist with the prescription of more effective interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Given the inter-relatedness among symptoms, research efforts are focused on an evaluation of symptom clusters. The purposes of this study were to evaluate for differences in the number and types of menopausal-related symptom clusters assessed prior to and at 12-months after surgery using ratings of occurrence and severity and to evaluate for changes in these symptom clusters over time. METHODS Prior to and at 12 months after surgery, 392 women with breast cancer completed the Menopausal Symptoms Scale. Exploratory factor analyses were used to identify the symptom clusters. RESULTS Of the 392 women evaluated, the mean number of symptoms (out of 46) was 13.2 (±8.5) at enrollment and 10.9 (±8.2) at 12 months after surgery. Using occurrence and severity, three symptom clusters were identified prior to surgery. Five symptom clusters were identified at 12 months following surgery. Two symptom clusters (i.e., pain/discomfort and hormonal) were relatively stable across both dimensions and time points. Two symptom clusters were relatively stable across both dimensions either prior to surgery (i.e., sleep/psychological/cognitive) or at 12 months after surgery (i.e., sleep). The other four clusters (i.e., irritability, psychological/cognitive, cognitive, psychological) were identified at one time point using a single dimension. CONCLUSIONS While some menopausal-related symptom clusters were consistent across time and dimensions, the majority of symptoms clustered together differently depending on whether they were evaluated prior to or at 12 months after breast cancer surgery. An increased understanding of how symptom clusters change over time may assist clinicians to focus their symptom assessments and management strategies.

Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic. Cancer pain significantly affects the diagnosis, quality of life and survival of patients with cancer. The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of a Pain Management Program (PMP) on pain and quality of life in a patient with cancer.Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a randomised pre-post test design approach. The data was collected from cancer patients in No 2 Military Hospital (500-Bedded), Yangon, Myanmar. The patients were recruited using a random allocation sampling technique and consisted of 30 respondents (experimental group) and 30 respondents (control group) taken according to the inclusion criteria. The Short Form-McGill Pain Questionnaire 2 (SF-MPQ 2) was used to assess pain, and The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used to assess the quality of life.Results: A MANOVA test was used to analyse the effect of PMP. It showed that 1) PMP decreased the pain and 2) PMP increased the quality of life in patients with cancer.Conclusion: Improvements in the quality of life and to do with pain-related cancer suggests that the vicious cycle of chronic pain may be alleviated by PMP. As we look at the results, PMP can be an effective treatment to be used by nurses for decreasing pain and increasing the quality of life in patients with cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between uncertainty in illness and quality of life, and examine the mediating role of coping strategies and mood states in this relationship among breast cancer patients. METHODS A convenience sample of 135 Malaysian women with breast cancer completed questionnaires measuring uncertainty in illness, mood states (i.e. anxiety and depression), quality of life, and copying styles. RESULTS The results showed an inverse correlation between uncertainty and quality of life after controlling for the effects of age, cancer stage and time since diagnosis. Moreover, the negative association between illness uncertainty and quality of life was mediated by coping strategies and mood states. CONCLUSION The findings revealed that breast cancer patients experiencing a high level of uncertainty more likely use avoidant and less likely use active emotional coping strategies which in turn amplifies anxiety and depression and undermines their quality of life. While some interventions to reduce the adverse consequences of uncertainty are recommended, the findings indicated the need for targeted psychological interventions seeking to gradually shift cancer patients' coping strategies from avoidant to active emotional coping.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate trajectories of and predictors for changes in upper extremity (UE) function in women (n = 396) during the first year after breast cancer treatment. DESIGN Prospective, longitudinal assessments of shoulder range of motion (ROM), grip strength, and perceived interference of function were performed before and for 1 year after surgery. Demographic, clinical, and treatment characteristics were evaluated as predictors of postoperative function. RESULTS Women had a mean (SD) age of 54.9 (11.6) years, and 64% were white. Small but statistically significant reductions in shoulder ROM were found on the affected side over 12 months (P < 0.001). Predictors of interindividual differences in ROM at the 1-month assessment were ethnicity, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, type of surgery, axillary lymph node dissection, and preoperative ROM. Predictors of interindividual differences in changes over time in postoperative ROM were living alone, type of surgery, axillary lymph node dissection, and adjuvant chemotherapy. Declines in mean grip strength from before through 1 month after surgery were small and not clinically meaningful. Women with greater preoperative breast pain interference scores had higher postoperative interference scores at all postoperative assessments. CONCLUSION Some of the modifiable risk factors identified in this study can be targeted for intervention to improve UE function in these women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Survival of ovarian cancer patients is still unsatisfactory despite the introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Women with advanced ovarian cancer with long-term survival are at persistent risk of anxiety and reactive depression due to poor prognosis and risk of burdensome symptoms. The aim of the study was to assess changes in anxiety and depression during multimodality ovarian cancer treatment and to identify correlates of anxiety and depression. METHOD The study included 106 consecutive patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Mean age of the study group was 53.9 years (SD = 10.8, range: 23-79). The participants completed Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory four times: prior to and one week after surgery, and before the second and the fourth course of adjuvant chemotherapy. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify the independent determinants of distress at various stages of treatment. RESULTS The level of anxiety and the prevalence of pathological anxiety (74%) were the highest prior to surgery and gradually decreased thereafter. Irrespective of the treatment stage, the level of anxiety was higher than the corresponding level of depression. History of abortion, presence of intestinal stoma, poor general status, residual disease and time from the initial diagnosis were the main determinants of distress in ovarian cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS Significant changes in the level of anxiety and slight fluctuations in the depression level experienced during ovarian cancer treatment are mostly determined by clinical variables. Identification of individuals with psychological comorbidities is a vital component of patient-oriented multidisciplinary care.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate how much of the variance in emotional status amongst Taiwanese cancer patients could be accounted for by opioid-taking self-efficacy. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 109 cancer patients who had taken prescribed opioid analgesics for cancer related pain in the past week and completed the Opioid-Taking Self-Efficacy Scale-CA (OTSES-CA) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS There was a significant and negative correlation between scores on anxiety and self-efficacy total scale (r = -0.29, p < 0.01), self-efficacy communication subscale (r = -0.37, p < 0.01), self-efficacy acquiring help subscale (r = -0.22, p < 0.05) and self-efficacy managing treatment related concerns subscale (r = -0.32, p < 0.01). However, the correlation between scores on depression and the self-efficacy total scale was not significant (r = -0.18, p > 0.05); only the self-efficacy communication subscale was significantly and negatively associated with depression (r = -0.27, p < 0.01). The opioid-taking self-efficacy total scale accounted for 8% of predicting the patients' anxiety. Opioid-taking self-efficacy subscales accounted for 20% (R2 = 0.20, p = 0.000) of the variance in predicting anxiety and 10% (R2 = 0.10, p = 0.02) of the variance in predicting depression. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the potential importance of a patient's opioid-taking self-efficacy beliefs in their emotional status, which is relevant to cancer pain.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the prevalence rate and influencing factors of preoperative anxiety and depression in patients with gastric cancer, in China. Methods Patients with gastric cancer who were diagnosed by gastroscopy and would accept laparoscopic surgery were eligible for the study. Each participant completed self-administered questionnaires, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), Social Support Rating Scale, and Type D personality scale before surgery. Routine blood tests were undertaken within 7 days before surgery, to calculate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Based on HADS, patients were divided into an anxiety/depression group and a nonanxiety/depression group. Results Fifty-three patients with gastric cancer were included in the study. The prevalence of preoperative anxiety and/or depression was 20.75% (11/53). Factors influencing preoperative anxiety and depression were a resigned dimension of coping style, type D personality and NLR. Logistic regression analysis showed that a higher score for the resigned dimension of coping style on the MCMQ and a higher NLR were significantly associated with preoperative anxiety and depression. Conclusions The prevalence of preoperative anxiety and depression in Chinese patients with gastric cancer may be influenced by both the coping mode and NLR.

Abstract
The aims of this study are to evaluate whether or not there is a relationship between mastalgia with anxiety and depression in young women with mastalgia who do not have organic breast pathology and to examine the effect of pain on the quality of life. Forty female pre-menopausal patients between the ages of 20-40 years with mastalgia and 40 totally healthy volunteers with the same characteristics were investigated with the Short Form 36 (SF-36), Hamilton Depression Scale, and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale prospectively following breast examination and radiological examination. Statistical assessments were performed using the SPSS 11.5. Anxiety levels were observed to be higher in the patient group (p = 0.04). The depression level was higher in the patient group; however, this was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). The quality of life of the mastalgia group was determined to be lower than that of the control group, and the sub-parameters of physical function (p = 0.04), body pain (p = 0.02), general health (p = 0.03), and energy (p = 0.008) were found to be significantly low. There may be a relationship between mastalgia and depression in young women with mastalgia; however, a closer relationship between anxiety and mastalgia is observed. Mastalgia affects the quality of life of an individual negatively at a significant degree.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although fear of recurrence (FCR) is common among cancer survivors, it remains unclear what factors predict initial levels (e.g., prior to surgery) or changes in FCR in the post-treatment period. Among women treated for breast cancer, this study evaluated the effects of demographic, clinical, symptom, and psychosocial adjustment characteristics on the initial (preoperative) levels of FCR and trajectories of FCR over 6 months following surgery. METHODS Prior to and for 6 months following breast cancer surgery, 396 women were assessed for demographic and clinical (disease and treatment) characteristics, symptoms, psychological adjustment characteristics, and quality of life (QOL). FCR was assessed using a four-item subscale from the QOL instrument. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine changes in FCR scores and to identify predictors of inter-individual differences in preoperative FCR levels and trajectories over 6 months. RESULTS From before surgery to 6 months post-operatively, women with breast cancer showed a high degree of inter-individual variability in FCR. Preoperatively, women who lived with someone, experienced greater changes in spiritual life, had higher state anxiety, had more difficulty coping, or experienced more distress due to diagnosis or distress to family members reported higher FCR scores. Patients who reported better overall physical health and higher FCR scores at enrollment demonstrated a steeper decrease in FCR scores over time. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight inter-individual heterogeneity in initial levels and changes in FCR over time among women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Further work is needed to identify and provide interventions for women experiencing FCR during and after breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
CONTEXT Approximately 30% of the women report pain in the affected breast before breast cancer surgery. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this secondary analysis of our prospective study was to determine how women who experienced both preoperative and persistent postsurgical breast pain (n=107) differed from women who did not report preoperative breast pain and did (n=158) or did not (n=122) experience persistent postsurgical breast pain. METHODS Differences in demographic and clinical characteristics were evaluated. Linear mixed effects (LME) modeling was used to evaluate for group differences in symptom severity, function, sensation, and quality of life (QOL) over time. RESULTS Between-group differences in demographic and clinical characteristics as well as trajectories of shoulder function and QOL were identified. Women with both preoperative and persistent postsurgical breast pain were younger; were more likely to report swelling, strange sensations, hardness, and numbness in the affected breast before surgery; and were more likely to have reconstruction at the time of surgery. Women with both preoperative and persistent postsurgical breast pain had more biopsies in the prior year, more lymph nodes removed, and reported more severe acute postsurgical pain than women without preoperative breast pain. The LME modeling revealed significant group effects for most outcomes evaluated. Over the six months of the study, women with both preoperative and persistent postsurgical pain had persistently poorer shoulder flexion and physical well-being than women without preoperative breast pain. CONCLUSION Investigations of the etiology and molecular mechanisms of preoperative breast pain, as well as interventions for this high-risk group, are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding normal volume asymmetry is essential for accurate assessment of limb volume changes following breast cancer (BC) treatment in which lymphatic function is disrupted. The purposes of this study were to evaluate for differences in dominant and nondominant limb volumes and to evaluate for interactions between the effects of dominance and side of cancer on limb volume. METHODS AND RESULTS This study evaluated preoperative limb volumes of 397 women enrolled in a prospective, longitudinal study of neuropathic pain and lymphedema. Volume was calculated from circumference. Limb resistance was measured with bioimpedance. Women were dichotomized into two groups: those whose cancer was on their dominant side and those whose cancer was on their nondominant side. Analyses of variance were used to evaluate for differences. In 47%, BC occurred on the side of the dominant limb. Except for the 30 to 40 centimeter (cm) limb volume segment, a main effect of dominance was found for all measures. The volume of the dominant limb was significantly greater than that of the nondominant limb. No main effects were found for side of cancer. A statistically significant interaction was found only at the 0 to 10 cm limb volume segment. CONCLUSIONS Prior to BC treatment, the dominant limb demonstrated lower bioimpedance resistance (-2.09%) and greater total limb volume (1.12%) than the nondominant limb. Segmental volume differences were greatest at the proximal forearm segment (2.31%) and least at the proximal arm segment (0.21%). This study provides evidence that preoperative volume assessment is important due to normal variability associated with limb dominance.

Abstract
Preoperative breast pain in women with breast cancer may result from a number of causes. Previous work from our team found that breast pain occurred in 28.2% of women (n = 398) who were about to undergo breast cancer surgery. The occurrence of preoperative breast pain was associated with a number of demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as variation in two cytokine genes. Given that ion channels regulate excitability of sensory neurons, we hypothesized that variations in potassium channel genes would be associated with preoperative breast pain in these patients. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated for associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms and inferred haplotypes among 10 potassium channel genes and the occurrence of preoperative breast pain in patients scheduled to undergo breast cancer surgery. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify those genetic variations that were associated with the occurrence of preoperative breast pain while controlling for age and genomic estimates of and self-reported race/ethnicity. Variations in four potassium channel genes: (1) potassium voltage-gated channel, delayed rectifier, subfamily S, member 1 (KCNS1); (2) potassium inwardly rectifying channel, subfamily J, member 3 (KCNJ3); (3) KCNJ6; and (4) potassium channel, subfamily K, member 9 (KCNK9) were associated with the occurrence of breast pain. Findings from this study warrant replication in an independent sample of women who report breast pain following one or more breast biopsies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most incident cancer and the fifth cause of death due to malignancies among Iranian women. A strong breast cancer patients' sense of meaning and purpose in life appears to decrease anxiety in their life. The present study has investigated the effectiveness of group Logotherapy on the reduction of anxiety in women with breast cancer. METHODS The research was quasi-experimental with pre-test, post-test and control group. For this purpose, 30 patients with breast cancer were randomly divided into two experimental group and control group. Then, all patients completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The experimental group received Logotherapy-based group counseling for eight sessions; however, the control group did not receive any specific training. In the end, both groups were tested again. After collecting the questionnaires, data was analyzed by the statistic software SPSS version 18 and using analysis of covariance. RESULTS The research results showed that group Logotherapy was effective in reducing anxiety in women with breast cancer (p<0.005). In other words, this intervention could reduce anxiety in the experimental group. CONCLUSION The results suggest that in line with current medical treatment, psychosocial interventions can be used to reduce anxiety in the breast cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE One out of five cancer survivors suffer from depression after oncology treatment. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between depression and quality of life (QoL), cancer-related symptoms, physical activity level, health-related fitness, and salivary flow rate in breast cancer survivors. METHOD 108 breast cancer survivors in the year after the conclusion of treatment were included in this cross-sectional study. Demographic and clinically relevant information, cancer-related fatigue (Piper Fatigue Scale), QoL (QLQ-Br23 module), pain intensity VAS scale, salivary flow rate, physical activity level (Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire), and health-related fitness were assessed in all participants. Depressed mood was measured with the Profile of Mood States (POMS) Depression subscale. RESULTS Significant positive correlations between depressed mood and fatigue, systemic side effects, perceived shoulder pain, and breast-arms symptoms (r ranged between .57 and .28, P < .01) were found. In addition, significant negative correlations between depressed mood and body image, future perspective, force handgrip, and physical activity level (r ranged between -.41 and -.19; p < .05) were found. Regression analyses revealed that cancer-related fatigue, physical activity level, systemic side effects, and body image were significant predictors of depressed mood, and when combined, they explained 39.6% of the variance in depressed mood. CONCLUSIONS Cancer-related fatigue, physical activity level, and QoL partially explain the variability of depressed mood in breast cancer survivors. This paper facilitates a better understanding of the relationship between depressed mood and possible factors associated with it.

Abstract
Breast cancer patients may have unmet supportive care needs during treatment, including symptom management of treatment-related toxicities, and educational, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. Delivery of supportive care is often a low priority in low- and middle-income settings, and is also dependent on resources available. This consensus statement describes twelve key recommendations for supportive care during treatment in low- and middle-income countries, identified by an expert international panel as part of the 5th Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) Global Summit for Supportive Care, which was held in October 2012, in Vienna, Austria. Panel recommendations are presented in a 4-tier resource-stratified table to illustrate how health systems can provide supportive care services during treatment to breast cancer patients, starting at a basic level of resource allocation and incrementally adding program resources as they become available. These recommendations include: health professional and patient and family education; management of treatment related toxicities, management of treatment-related symptoms of fatigue, insomnia and non-specific pain, and management of psychosocial and spiritual issues related to breast cancer treatment. Establishing supportive care during breast cancer treatment will help ensure that breast cancer patients receive comprehensive care that can help 1) improve adherence to treatment recommendations, 2) manage treatment-related toxicities and other treatment related symptoms, and 3) address the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of breast cancer and breast cancer treatments.

Abstract
Background Many patients with cancer experience depression and anxiety, and an associated decrease in quality of life (QOL) during radiation therapy (RT). The main objective of the study was to determine the benefits of psychosocial interventions for cancer patients who received RT. Methods Patients with cancer (n = 178) who agreed to participate in the study were randomized to the intervention arm (n = 89) or the control arm (n = 89). Patients in the intervention group received psychosocial care during RT, whereas the control group received RT only. The benefits of the intervention were evaluated using the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) to measure depression, the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) to assess anxiety, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) to survey health-related QOL. The association between intervention and survival was also assessed. Results Patients randomly assigned to the intervention arm showed significant improvements on symptoms of depression (p < 0.05) and anxiety (p < 0.05), health-related QOL (p < 0.05) (i.e. better global health status, and physical and emotional functioning, and less insomnia) when compared with controls. In the subset analysis, female patients, those that received high dose irradiation, and those that underwent adjuvant chemotherapy could benefit more from psychosocial intervention. There was no difference between the two groups in disease-free survival (DFS) (2-year DFS 79.8% in the intervention arm and 76.4% in the control arm; p = 0.527) and overall survival (OS) (2-year OS 83.1% in the intervention arm and 84.3% in the control arm; p = 0.925) Conclusions Psychosocial intervention is a cost-effective approach that can improve a patient’s mood and QOL both during and after RT.
