Association of LIN28B Gene Polymorphisms (rs221634, rs221635, rs314276, rs9404590, and rs12194974) with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Susceptibility and Clinical/Pathological Features

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Lymphoma is a common hematopoietic cancer.  It has been proposed that LIN28B gene and its variations may have function in cancer progression and metastasis. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation has been to examine the correlation among LIN28B gene polymorphisms (such as rs221634 A>T, rs221635 T> C, rs314276 C>A, rs9404590 T>G, and rs12194974 G>A) as well as the risk of NHL in an Iranian sample.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In the current case-control research, 175 individuals with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma along with 175 normal controls participated; polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methodology has been utilized to the genotype samples.

RESULTS

Our data demonstrated that rs12194974 and the rs221635 variants have been correlated with higher NHL risk, while rs221634 and rs314276 variants were correlated with lower risk of NHL (P≤0.05). In addition, we detected an association between rs221634 and treatment with R-CHOP. No substantial correlation has discovered among rs9404590 polymorphism and NHL in any inheritance models (P≥0.05).

CONCLUSION

This was the first investigation evaluating the correlation among LIN28B gene polymorphisms as well as the occurrence of NLH. Further studies in different ethnic populations and large-scale sample size are needed to support results.

The Effect of Caspase 8, 9 Gene Polymorphisms on Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Susceptibility and Clinical/Pathological Features

BACKGROUND

Caspases (CASPs) are the main executors of the apoptotic process. Studies to date have shown the role of caspase-8 (CASP8) and caspase-9 (CASP9) in carcinogenesis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the associations between CASP9-rs4233532, CASP9-rs4646018, and CASP8- rs1045485 gene polymorphisms and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) susceptibility in an Iranian population-based study. Moreover, it was examined whether such the genotype of these polymorphisms is related with clinicopathological characteristics of NHL.

METHODS

175 patients with NHL and 175 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled in this study. We determined the genotypes of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from CASP genes with Tetra ARMS-PCR (Amplification refractory mutation system) method.

RESULTS

Statistically significant association were observed between CASP9-rs4646018 and increased risk of NHL under codominant CC, codominant TC, and dominant TC+CC genetic models. Our results showed that the A allele of CASP8-rs1045485 was a protective factor for NHL and GArs1045485 genotype significantly reduced risk of NHL. In contrast, CASP9- rs4233532 was not linked to NHL susceptibility. No relationship was detected between CASP8-rs1045485 and CASP9-rs4233532 and NHL clinicopathological characteristics, however genetic variation in CASP9-rs4646018 was associated with histology, treatment and radio therapy of NHL.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study presented that the CASP8- rs1045485 and CASP9-rs4646018 polymorphisms could affect the risk of NHL in Iranian populations which was the first report to show the significant relationship between rs1045485, rs4646018 polymorphisms and NHL susceptibility. Replication large-scale case-control studies in different ethnicities are warranted to verify these findings.

Association between PAX8AS1 (rs4848320 C > T, rs1110839 G > T, and rs6726151 T > G) and MEG3 (rs7158663) gene polymorphisms and non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) PAX8 antisense RNA 1 (PAX8AS1) and Maternal-expressed gene 3 (MEG3) contribute to the pathogenesis of various malignancies including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). In this study, we aimed to examine the possible association of polymorphisms of PAX8 and MEG3 and the risk NHL. A total of 175 patients and 175 healthy subjects were genotyped by PCR-RFLP and Tetra-Arms PCR assays. Results demonstrated rs4848320 C > T and rs6726151 T > G of PAX8AS1 and rs7158663 of MEG3 play a potential role in the susceptibility of NHL and PAX8AS1 rs1110839 T > G variant was associated with decreased risk of NHL. Haplotype analysis of rs1110839, rs4848320, and rs6726151 demonstrated GCG haplotype is associated with increased risk of lymphoma and TTG, TTT, and GTT haplotypes are related to decreased lymphoma susceptibility.

Characterization and Comparison of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosome Isolation Methods using Culture Supernatant

Exosomes are extracellular endosomal nanoparticles, which are formed under complex processes during the formation of multivesicular bodies. They are also achieved from conditioned media of a variety of cell types, especially mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Exosomes can modulate intracellular physiological actions via signaling molecules on the surface or secretion of components to the extracellular spaces. Furthermore, they are potentially used as crucial agents for cell-free therapy; however, their isolation and characterization can be challenging. In the current study, two methods of exosome isolation have been characterized and compared using a culture media of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, namely ultracentrifugation and a commercial kit; moreover, the efficiency of these two methods was highlighted in this study. Two different isolation methods of exosomes from MSCs were used to compare the efficiency of exosomes. For both isolation methods, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay have been performed. The electron microscopy and DLS indicated the presence of exosomes. Moreover, the kit and ultracentrifugation isolates contained approximately comparable amounts of protein measured by the BCA. Overall, the two isolation methods had similar performances. Although ultracentrifugation is used as a gold standard for exosome isolation, the commercial kit has some advantages and can be applied alternatively according to its cost-effectiveness and time-saving properties.

Ethnopharmacological Knowledge for Management of Oral Mucositis in Zahedan, Southeast Iran

Objectives

Oral mucositis is among the complications of cancer therapy that affects quality of life and imposes remarkable financial costs for patients with cancer. This study aimed to explore, preserve, and scientifically investigate the ethnomedicinal knowledge of traditional healers for treatment of oral mucositis in Zahedan, Iran.

Materials and Methods

Field surveys were performed from September 2018 to October 2018 in Zahedan. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire in Persian. All species recorded for the treatment of oral mucositis were sampled. Samples were identified by a botanist and a voucher specimen of them was deposited in the Herbarium Center of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Kerman, Iran. Information, such as scientific name, family, local name, parts used, and preparation method, were also provided. Literature review on available data on effect of the addressed plant species on mucositis and other relative pharmacological actions, such as wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties, was performed.

Results

A total of 29 informants (attars) were interviewed and 18 medicaments were recommended, of which three samples were of synthesis or mineral origin and 15 samples were of herbal origin. Drugs were administered both topically and orally. According to recent studies, two herbs were evaluated for their direct effect on mucositis. Some pharmacological properties related to mucositis treatment by the other 11 samples have been confirmed.

Conclusion

This study provides information on the characteristics of medicinal plants from Zahedan, Iran based on their ethnopharmacological knowledge and pharmacological properties for mucositis treatment.

Knowledge, attitude, and practice among staff associated with Human Papillomavirus Vaccine of young children in Iran

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, practice associated with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine for Young Children among lecturers and health staffs of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU).

METHOD

This was a cross-sectional study with 220 adults from five different specialties, randomly selected. Data was collected using 45-item questionnaire on knowledge (12- item), attitude (18-item) and practice (15-item) (KAP) about HPV. The demographic questionnaire included information on age, gender, level of education, occupation, and marital status. Content validity was calculated by content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI). Reliability was evaluated using test-retest and by Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, internal consistency was calculated values >0.81 which considered as satisfactory.

RESULTS

The mean age of the studied population was 37.70± 8.07 (23-67) years. Of the 220 participants, 80 (36.4%) were males and 140 (63.6%) were females. In evaluating KAP in the men and women, the mean and standard deviation of knowledge were estimated at good level and one-way ANOVA analysis showed significant differences between women and men (p=0.019). There was no significant difference in men and women related to attitude (p=0.92) and practice (p=0.38).

CONCLUSION

The KAP about HPV among participants was significantly higher at good levels compared to average levels. Women's knowledge was significantly higher than men. Attitude and practice could have been higher because there was consensus to the usage of vaccine among the specialists to prevent HPV.

Relationship between rs6715345 Polymorphisms of MIR-375 Gene and rs4939827 of SMAD-7 Gene in Women with Breast Cancer and Healthy Women: A Case-Control Study

BACKGROUND

Today, the role of microRNAs in the pathogenesis of breast cancer has been established. Genetic mutations play a significant role in determining the risk factors of cancer. The polymorphism of these two genes can alter their expression. This study has been performed to investigate the relationship between polymorphisms of rs6715345 of miR-375 gene and rs4939827 of the SMAD7 gene and development of breast cancer in a population in southeastern Iran.

METHODS

This case-control study was performed on the blood sample of 205 patients with breast cancer and 225 healthy individuals for investigating the rs34917480 and rs4939827 polymorphisms using the PCR-RFLP method. The data were analyzed by t-test, χ2, and logistic regression. The SPSS v18.0 used for data analysis.

RESULTS

The findings of this study indicated that the risk of developing breast cancer does not have a significant relationship with rs6715345 polymorphism of miR-375 gene (p=0.1). However, the rs4939827 polymorphism of the SMAD7 gene was significantly linked to the risk of developing breast cancer in the southeastern population in Iran (p=0.01).

CONCLUSION

The results suggest that the rs4939827 polymorphism of the SMAD7 gene can lead to an increased risk of incidence of breast cancer in the southeastern population in Iran.<br />.

Investigating Relationship between Pre- and Post- Chemotherapy Cognitive Performance with Levels of Depression and Anxiety in Breast Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

INTRODUCTION

Evidence suggests that cancer and chemotherapy-related cognitive impairments are an important clinical issue that can have a negative impact on the quality of life (QOL) of many cancer patients during and after treatment. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive performance before and after chemotherapy with levels of depression and anxiety in patients with breast cancer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was performed on 100 women with breast cancer in south of Iran. Patients included in the study were evaluated for cognitive performance before chemotherapy and 1, 3, and 6 months after chemotherapy. Patients' cognitive performance was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Patients were also assessed for their level of anxiety and depression using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Descriptive tests (percentage, frequency and mean) and ANOVA test used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Results of ANOVA test showed a significant difference between the cognitive performance of patients with breast cancer at 1, 3, and 6 months after chemotherapy compared to pre- chemotherapy phase. The above test also revealed a significant relationship between cognitive performance of patients and anxiety and depression.

CONCLUSION

The results showed that, due to the decrease in cognitive performance and increased anxiety and depression after initiation of chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer, it is necessary to closely monitor the mental and psychological status of these patients by their family and the treatment staffs so that the patient be able to cope with the disease more optimally and to recover.

Effect of aromatherapy on cancer complications: A systematic review

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of aromatherapy on cancer complications.

METHODS

In this systematic review, international (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE and CENTRAL) and national databases (SID and Magiran) were searched from inception of the databases to April 31, 2019. JBI and Jadad scales were used to assess the quality of the studies included.

RESULTS

of 43 Studies conducted on 3239 cancer patients in 13 countries from 1995 to 2019, entered the final stage. The results showed that the aromatherapy improves the various physical and psychological complications, although few studies have shown that aromatherapy had no effect on skin reactions.

CONCLUSION

Considering the various complications and costs in cancer patients, it seems that the aromatherapy can be used as a proper supplemental treatment to improve complications, although further studies are needed to determine the protocol and the standard dosage.

Mathematical Analysis of a Modified Closed-Form Formula for Design a Uniform Leaky-Wave Antenna With Ultra-Low SLL

Straight long slots have high side-lobes in the far-field amplitude patterns, which reduces their use as high-performance antennas. To reduce these side-lobes, a long slot may be tapered to produce the desired radiation patterns. The theory of control of the aperture distribution to reduce side-lobes has been already reported in some works and well known for already some decades. It is, however, shown in this paper that it may not be good enough to achieve ultra-low side lobes. The theory to analyze and design tapered leaky-wave antennas is described in this paper. Since it is very challenging to achieve a mathematical equation in this regard, some parameters will be calculated using simulation in the first step and the shape of the antenna field is obtained based on these parameters. In the next step, a differential equation is derived for the first step parameters. The solution of this differential equation which is the main motivation of this paper will be expressed in three ways where each part is more accurate than the previous one. According to the measurement results, the structure has a side-lobe level more than −45 dB.

Global prevalence of depression among breast cancer patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Depression in patients with breast cancer imposes huge costs to patients, families, and healthcare systems. The present study aimed at evaluating the global prevalence depression among patients with breast cancer.

METHODS

In this meta-analysis, three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched from 1 January, 2000 until 30 March, 2019. The Hoy tool was used to evaluate the quality of the articles included in the meta-analysis. The search, screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction were carried out by two of the researchers.

RESULTS

Of 47,424 studies, 72 studies performed in 30 countries entered the final stage of analysis. The global prevalence of depression was 32.2%. Specifically, the prevalence of depression was highest in the Eastern Mediterranean region and twice as high in middle-income countries as compared to developed countries.

CONCLUSIONS

Regarding the high prevalence of depression in patients with breast cancer, it is vital to carry out screening within standard time periods and offer the necessary emotional support.

Health-related quality of life of breast cancer patients in the Eastern Mediterranean region: a systematic review and meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women around the world, and this applies to the Middle East as well. The goal of all medical care and treatment is to improve the quality of life (QoL) of patients. Accordingly, the present study aimed at evaluating the QoL of patients with breast cancer in the Middle East region.

METHODS

In this meta-analysis, three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched from inception until August 2018. The hoy et tool was used to evaluate the quality of the articles included in the meta-analysis. The search, screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction were carried out by two of the researchers.

RESULTS

Thirty-six studies conducted on 8347 Middle Eastern women with breast cancer entered the final stage. QoL was assessed by the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire in 20 studies, with 6034 patients. The mean of the reported QoL was between 31.1 and 75.6. Based on the results of the random effect method, the overall mean of the QoL was 60.5 (95% confidence interval 56.0, 65.0; I2 = 99.0%). In six studies performed on 1053 individuals, QoL was classified as good, moderate, or poor. Less than one-third of patients (21%) had a good QoL.

CONCLUSIONS

Since less than one-third of patients had a good QoL, it seems necessary to design and implement an integrated and multidimensional educational program to improve QoL of patients with breast cancer.

Epstein–Barr Virus Infection in Adult Patients with Gastric Cancer in Northeast of Iran

Background: Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus from human herpes virus that associates with many of the human cancers including gastric cancer (GC). Aims: The aim of the present study was to report infection of EBV in adult patients with GC in Northeast of Iran and the correlation between a number of clinicopathology factors with EBV status. Materials and Methods: In a case–control study in 2016, 56 GC patients and 56 controls were selected for the analysis. All patients had gastric adenocarcinoma untreated patients with age >18 years. EBV status detected by the polymerase chain reaction method. Results: Out of 56 GC patients, 35 (62.5%) were EBV positivity and out of 56 controls 3 (5.4%) were EBV positivity (P < 0.001). There is not a significant correlation between the variables with the EBV status (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the progression-free survival rate for the patients with EBV negativity was 95.2% compared with 82.9% for EBV positivity (P = 0.174). Conclusions: This study reported a very high prevalence of EBV-associated GC in the Northeast of Iran compared with other areas of the World and showed a significant correlation between EBV infection and incidence of GC.

The Relationship Between Risk Factors and Survival in Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

BACKGROUND

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is aggressive cancer, especially in adults as only 20-40% is cured with current treatment regimens.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to evaluate prognostic factors and their effects on survival in ALL patients in the Northeast of Iran.

METHODS

In a descriptive and retrospective study from 2009 to 2015, 48 ALL patients referred to hematology-oncology clinic. Age, sex, fever, blood group, type of ALL and consumption of amphotericin B, forms of cytogenetic, survival in the patients, WBC, hemoglobin, and platelet were checked in the first referral for every patient. The mean follow-up was 27.3 months in which 28 patients (59.3%) died. overall survival (OS) was plotted by GraphPad Prism 5 and the Log-rank test was used for analysis of survival with risk factors.

RESULTS

The mean age for all the ALL patients at diagnosis was 32.3 years (range, 15-71 years), and 81.3% were male. Of all patients, 62.5% had fever and 25% consumed amphotericin B. 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-year OS rates were 62.2%, 52.7%, 40.6%, 39.1%, 22.2%, respectively. 75%, 29.2% and 39.6% of patients had WBC < 20 × 10³/μl, Hb < 7 g/dL and platelet < 30 × 10³/μL, respectively. There was a significant difference in survival based on age (P = 0.000).

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results, age > 35 years is the most prognostic factor in ALL patients. Also, patients who received amphotericin B had lower life expectancy because these patients were suffering from fungal infection or due to lack of response to antibacterial drugs, they have been treated with amphotericin B.

miR-608 rs4919510 C>G polymorphism decreased the risk of breast cancer in an Iranian subpopulation

AIM

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that function as oncogene or tumor suppressors. The single nucleotide polymorphisms in miRNAs potentially can alter miRNA-binding sites on target genes as well as affecting miRNAs expression. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of miR-608 rs4919510 C>G variant on breast cancer (BC) risk.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This case-control study conducted on 160 women with BC and 192 age-matched healthy women. Genotyping of miR-608 rs4919510 was done using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.

RESULTS

Our findings showed that GC genotype significantly decreased the risk of BC (odds ratio (OR) = 0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.28-0.88, p = 0.018) compared to CC genotype. Furthermore the G allele decreased the risk of BC (OR = 0.53, 95%CI 0.30-0.92, p = 0.024). No significant association was found between miR-609 genotypes and clinicopathological characteristics of BC patients (p >0.05).

CONCLUSION

Our findings indicate that miR-608 polymorphism might be associated with decreased risk of BC in an Iranian subpopulation. Further large-scale studies with different ethnicities are needed to verify our findings.

Association study of hsa-mir-603 rs11014002 polymorphism and risk of breast cancer in a sample of Iranian population

Accumulated evidence have proposed that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in microRNAs (miRNAs) are connected to breast cancer (BC) risk. We have done a case-control study with 258 BC patients and 209 control women to examine the potential association of Hsa-mir-603 rs11014002 C>T polymorphisms with BC susceptibility. The polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Our findings showed that the rs11014002 C>T variant was not associated with an increased risk of BC in codominant (OR=0.67, 95%CI=0.42-1.08, P=0.121, CT vs CC; and OR=0.18, 95%CI=0.02-1.67, P=0.170, TT vs CC), dominant (OR=0.64, 95%CI=0.41-1.01, P=0.062, CT+TT vs CC), and recessive (OR=0.20, 95%CI=0.02-1.81, P=0.178, TT vs CC+CT) inheritance models tested. While, the T allele significantly decreased the risk of BC (OR= 0.63; 95% CI =0.41-0.95; P=0.032) compared to C allele. In conclusion, the findings indicated that Mir603 rs11014002 T allele might contribute to decrease the risk of BC in a sample of Iranian population. Further studies with larger sample sizes and different ethnicities are warranted to confirm our findings.

Improved prediction of inhibitor development in previously untreated patients with severe haemophilia A

Treatment of previously untreated patients (PUPs) with severe haemophilia A is complicated by the formation of inhibitors. Prediction of PUPs with high risk is important to allow altering treatment with the intention to reduce the occurrence of inhibitors. An unselected multicentre cohort of 825 PUPs with severe haemophilia A (FVIII<0.01 IU mL(-1) ) was used. Patients were followed until 50 exposure days (EDs) or inhibitor development. All predictors of the existing prediction model including three new potential predictors were studied using multivariable logistic regression. Model performance was quantified [area under the curve (AUC), calibration plot] and internal validation (bootstrapping) was performed. A nomogram for clinical application was developed. Of the 825 patients, 225 (28%) developed inhibitors. The predictors family history of inhibitors, F8 gene mutation and an interaction variable of dose and number of EDs of intensive treatment were independently associated with inhibitor development. Age and reason for first treatment were not associated with inhibitor development. The AUC was 0.69 (95% CI 0.65-0.72) and calibration was good. An improved prediction model for inhibitor development and a nomogram for clinical use were developed in a cohort of 825 PUPs with severe haemophilia A. Clinical applicability was improved by combining dose and duration of intensive treatment, allowing the assessment of the effects of treatment decisions on inhibitor risk and potentially modify treatment.

Anchorage value of surgical titanium screws in orthodontic tooth movement

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical stability and anchorage value of titanium screws in orthodontic tooth movement. Nine patients, who needed maximum anchorage for canine retraction, were selected. Records of 10 patients with similar malocclusions who had received conventional treatment were used as controls. In the maxilla and mandible 27 mini-screws, diameter 2mm and length 9 or 11 mm, were used. At the end of the first stage of orthodontic treatment the first premolar teeth were extracted after taking a lateral cephalometric radiograph. After 1 week, a retraction force of 180 g was applied to the canines. The second cephalometric X-rays were taken and evaluated after the completion of canine retraction (mean duration of 23.2 weeks). Results were analysed using Fisher Exact, Wilcoxon signed ranks and paired t-tests. Displacement of the first molars and screws before and after treatment showed no significant changes in either the vertical or horizontal plane. The first molar movements in the study and control groups were only significant in the antero-posterior plane in both maxilla and mandible. Of the 9 screws in maxilla and 18 screws in mandible, 2 and 3 screws showed clinical failure, respectively. The failed screws were replaced by other screws that withstood the applied force until the end of treatment. In conclusion, titanium screws can be used reliably as a form of anchorage.

Tuned vibration absorber for suppression of rest tremor in Parkinson's disease

A simple approach for the suppression of the tremor associated with Parkinson's disease is presented. The proposed system is a tuned vibration absorber (TVA), which has been very effective in the suppression of vibrations in an experimental model of the human arm with two degrees of freedom. Theoretical and numerical methods were used to study the behaviour of the arm model and to develop an effective tremor reduction approach. Based on these studies, a vibration absorber was designed, tested numerically and fabricated for experimental testing. Experimental investigations indicated that optimum control performance was related to the position of the controller and the excitation frequency. With a distance of 160 mm from the end of forearm, the TVA was found to have the best performance, and, for different tremor frequencies, the vibration of the experimental model was reduced by more than 80%.

Credit programs, patriarchy and men's violence against women in rural Bangladesh

Although violence by men against women in Bangladesh occurs in most cases within the home, in a larger sense it does not originate in the home nor persist only within the home. It is simply one element in a system that subordinates women through social norms that define women's place and guide their conduct. This paper uses ethnographic and structured survey data from a study in rural Bangladesh to explore the relationship between domestic violence against women and their economic and social dependence. It describes some of the common situations in which violence against women occurs in Bangladeshi society, analyzes its larger context, and identifies factors that appear to lessen its incidence in this particular socio-economic setting. The study findings suggest that group-based credit programs can reduce men's violence against women by making women's lives more public. The problem of men's violence against women is deeply rooted, however, and the authors argue that much more extensive interventions will be needed to significantly undermine it.

Credit programs, women's empowerment, and contraceptive use in rural Bangladesh

This article presents findings of research addressing the question of how women's status affects fertility. The effects on contraceptive use of women's participation in rural credit programs and on their status or level of empowerment were examined. A woman's level of empowerment is defined here as a function of her relative physical mobility, economic security, ability to make various purchases on her own, freedom from domination and violence within her family, political and legal awareness, and participation in public protests and political campaigning. The main finding is that participation in both of the credit programs studied, those of Grameen Bank and Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), is positively associated with women's level of empowerment. A positive effect on contraceptive use is discernible among both participants and nonparticipants in Grameen Bank villages. Participation in BRAC does not appear to affect contraceptive use.
