Occurrence and persistence of organic emerging contaminants and priority pollutants in five sewage treatment plants of Spain: two years pilot survey monitoring

Occurrence of micropollutants in rural domestic wastewater in Zhejiang Province, China and corresponding wastewater-based epidemiology analysis

By 2021, rural regions in China were occupied by over 500 million residents, generating an annual volume of 19.5 billion m3 of rural domestic wastewater (RDW). This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and removal of micropollutants (MPs) in RDW treatment facilities and to perform a corresponding wastewater-based epidemiology analysis (WBE). Our findings indicated the significantly high levels of influent MPs, particularly pharmaceuticals, such as ofloxacin and diclofenac being most prevalent (ranging from several to tens of μg/L) across different facilities. After various treatments, regular water indexes in the effluent, like NH3 -N and COD, have basically satisfied the local discharge standard. However, the concentration of certain dominant MPs in effluent remained notably high, ranging from hundreds of ng/L to several μg/L. The risk quotients of MPs like diclofenac, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, diuron, and isoproturon were all above 1 in the effluent, signifying significant hazards to aquatic organisms. The quantitative meta-analysis revealed higher average standardized removal efficiency for membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment (-11 %) compared to anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) treatment (11 %), indicating the higher efficiency of MBR treatment in outperforming the A2O as a secondary treatment. Additionally, employing biofilter as a tertiary treatment proved to be more effective as compared to flocculation-air flotation and artificial wetlands. Moreover, the results of WBE analysis showed that diclofenac and ofloxacin emerged as the most commonly used pharmaceuticals (of seven), with consumption levels recorded at 1222 and 517 mg/(d·103 capita), with daily defined doses per day per 103 capita of 12.2/1000 and 1.29/1000, respectively. This study addresses the existing knowledge gaps regarding the occurrence and removal of MPs in RDW and offers valuable insights into pharmaceutical consumption patterns in rural regions, thereby improving our understanding of public health.

Determination of antibiotics during treatment of hospital wastewater using automated solid-phase extraction followed by UHPLC-MS: occurrence, removal and environmental risks

The extent of removal of pharmaceuticals by African-based wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is relatively unknown with various studies observing high concentrations in effluents. This is mainly due to WWTPs still utilising the traditional treatment methods which are known to be less effective. In this study, 15 selected antibiotics (amoxicillin, ampicillin, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, erythromycin, gentamicin, metronidazole, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, penicillin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, tetracycline and trimethoprim) were monitored in wastewater as it goes through sedimentation (primary and secondary), aeration and chlorination stages of a WWTP. Analytical method involved solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatographic determination. Removal efficiencies during sedimentation were generally positive with doxycycline achieving 80-95.8%, while negative removal efficiencies were observed for penicillin V (-46.4 to -17.1%) and trimethoprim (-26.2 to -18.9%). The aeration and agitation stage resulted in concentration enhancement for several antibiotics with seven of them ranging between -273 and -15.5%. This stage was responsible for the relatively low overall removal efficiencies in which only 4 antibiotics (doxycycline, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and erythromycin) experienced overall removal efficiencies above 50%. The recorded effluent concentrations ranging between 0.0130 and 0.383 ng/mL were translated to low potential for development of antibiotic resistance genes in the receiving environments while ecotoxicity risk was high for only amoxicillin, ampicillin and sulfapyridine. The study has provided an overview of the performance of common wastewater treatment processes in South Africa and hopes that more monitoring and environmental risk data can be made available towards drafting of antibiotic priority lists that cater for Africa.

Remediation of groundwater polluted with lindane production wastes by conductive-diamond electrochemical oxidation

This work studies the remediation of groundwater saturated with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) from lindane production wastes by electrochemical oxidation. DNAPL-saturated groundwater contains up to 26 chlorinated organic compounds (COCs), including different isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). To do this, polluted groundwater was electrolysed using boron-doped diamond (BDD) and stainless steel (SS) as anode and cathode, respectively, and the influence of the current density on COCs removal was evaluated in the range from 5 to 50 mA cm-2. Results show that current densities higher than 25 mA cm-2 lead to the complete removal and mineralisation of all COCs identified in groundwater. The higher the current density, the higher the COCs removal rate. At lower current densities (5 mA cm-2), chlorobenzenes were completely removed, and degradations above 90 % were reached for COCs with more than five chlorine atoms in their molecules. The use of BDD anodes promotes the electrochemical generation of powerful reactive species, such as persulfate, hypochlorite or hydroxyl radicals, that contribute to the degradation and mineralisation of COCs. The applied current density also influences the generation of these species. Finally, no acute toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri was observed for the treated groundwater after the electrochemical oxidation performed at 5 and 10 mA cm-2. These findings demonstrate that electrochemical oxidation with BDD anodes at moderate current densities is a promising alternative for the remediation of actual groundwater contaminated with DNAPLs.

Comprehensive analysis of a widely pharmaceutical, furosemide, and its degradation products in aquatic systems: Occurrence, fate, and ecotoxicity

Many pharmaceutical compounds end up in the environment due to incomplete removal by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Some compounds are sometimes present in significant concentrations and therefore represent a risk to the aquatic environment. Furosemide is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Considered as an essential drug by the World Health Organization, this powerful loop diuretic is used extensively to treat hypertension, heart and kidney failure and many other purposes. However, this important consumption also results in a significant release of furosemide in wastewater and in the receiving environment where concentrations of a few hundred ng/L to several thousand have been found in the literature, making furosemide a compound of great concern. Also, during its transport in wastewater systems and WWTPs, furosemide can be degraded by various processes resulting in the production of more than 74 by-products. Furosemide may therefore present a significant risk to ecosystem health due not only to its direct cytotoxic, genotoxic and hepatotoxic effects in animals, but also indirectly through its transformation products, which are poorly characterized. Many articles classify furosemide as a priority pollutant according to its occurrence in the environment, its persistence, its elimination by WWTPs, its toxicity and ecotoxicity. Here, we present a state-of-the-art review of this emerging pollutant of interest, tracking it, from its consumption to its fate in the aquatic environment. Discussion points include the occurrence of furosemide in various matrices, the efficiency of many processes for the degradation of furosemide, the subsequent production of degradation products following these treatments, as well as their toxicity.

Evaluation of the sorption/desorption processes of pesticides in biodegradable mulch films used in agriculture

Microplastics from mulch films can be a source of chemical contamination to agricultural soils. In this context, biodegradable films have been widely positioned as a greener choice. However, their sorption/desorption capabilities, in contrast to the conventional plastic types remain understudied. It is for this reason that objective evaluation of their interactions with residual agricultural contaminants becomes important. Our findings reveal that polyethylene (PE) mulch films retained lower amounts of pesticide residues and demonstrated a higher desorption/release [median desorption = 71.86 μg/L or about 50%], while polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) mulch films retained higher amounts of pesticide residues onto their surface and demonstrated a much lower desorption [median desorption = 24.27 μg/L or about 17%] after a spraying event. A higher ambient temperature had no significant effect on final desorption amounts in both PE [median = 65.27 μg/L at 20 °C and 74.23 μg/L at 40 °C] and PBAT [median = 24.26 μg/L at 20 °C and 24.78 μg/L at 40 °C] mulch films. However, it did favour a faster desorption pace in PE films. Desorption in PBAT and PE plastic types was correlated with the log Kow value [Spearman's correlation: 0.857 and 0.837 respectively, p < 0.05]. However, only a moderate correlation with pKa was observed in PBAT [Spearman's correlation: 0.478, p < 0.05], while none for PE plastic type. Sorption of pesticides onto biodegradable PBAT microplastics were best explained by Elovich [R2: 0.937-0.959] and pseudo-second order kinetics [R2: 0.942-0.987], suggesting the presence of chemisorption. Furthermore, Weber Morris plots suggested the presence of a multi-step process and Boyd plots indicated that film diffusion or chemical bond formation was the rate-limiting step governing this phenomenon.

Constructing Heptazine-COF@TiO2 Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Efficient Photodegradation of Acetaminophen under Visible Light

Constructing heterojunction photocatalysts are widely applied to boost the photocatalytic activity of materials. Here, a novel covalent organic framework (COF) material with heptazine units was developed and hybridized with TiO2 nano particles (NPs) to fabricate the Heptazine-COF@TiO2 photocatalysts for acetaminophen (AAP) photodegradation. The successfully assembled heptazine unit endows the Heptazine-COF with outstanding semiconductor property (optical bandgap is 2.53 eV). The synthesized Heptazine-COF@TiO2 hybrids is proved to have the heterojunction structure with high visible light activity and fast charge-carrier mobility, and exhibits better performance in photodegradation of AAP under visible light. The excellent photodegradation efficiency (rate constant: 0.758 min-1 ) and high reusability (rate constant: 0.452 min-1 in the 6th  cycles) of the optimized sample outperform the traditional inorganic photocatalysts and other heterojunction photocatalysts. In addition, these photocatalysts present universal degradation activity for other dyes and antibiotics.

Evaluation of chemical contamination of crops produced in greenhouse by irrigation with reclaimed water

Using reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation is increasing worldwide to compensate for water scarcity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the uptake of some of the most commonly detected organic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and pesticides in regenerated water in a field study. Furthermore, it was studied their distribution and accumulation in the different parts of a crop (soil, plant and fruit). Three crops (cucumber, pepper and melon) were grown under controlled agronomic conditions in a greenhouse. In order to make an accurate evaluation of the process, "regenerated blank water" was spiked with 70 chemicals (including antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, analgesics, anaesthetics, anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, pesticides) at environmental concentrations (∼1 μg/L) and used for continuous crop irrigation. After crop season, the average total concentration of contaminants detected in the soil samples ranged from 132 to 232 μg/kg d.w depending of the crops type. Between 7 and 10 different contaminants were found in the harvested fruits, up to levels of 27.8 μg/kg f.w. cucumber, 12.4 μg/kg f.w. melon and 7.8 μg/kg f.w pepper. In general, cucumber fruit showed higher accumulation levels of contaminants than pepper and melon for most target analytes. The accumulation rates followed the order: root (0.2 %) < stem/leaf (1-4 %) < fruit (1-6 %) < soil (17-30 %). The experimental data obtained in this study were also used to assess the risk associated with the reuse of reclaimed water for crop irrigation as well to identify those contaminants that, due to their physicochemical properties, show higher accumulation rates and environmental impact.

Covalent organic framework in-situ immobilized laccase for the covalent polymerization removal of sulfamethoxazole in the presence of natural phenols: Prominent enzyme stability and activity

In current water treatment processes, pollutants are typically degraded into small molecules and CO2 for detoxification. This study employed laccase-mediated aggregation of new pollutants with natural phenolic compounds to remove pollutants by forming large molecular substances, effectively sequestering carbon. Free laccase is susceptible to environmental influences, causing deactivation. However, immobilizing laccase onto a carrier enhances enzyme stability. In the experiment, laccase was immobilized onto the covalent organic framework TpPa-1 through an in-situ loading process, resulting in immobilized laccase Lac@TpPa-1. Stability studies revealed that immobilized laccase outperformed free laccase in terms of pH, temperature, and recyclability. Moreover, immobilized laccase was employed for catalyzing the removal of emerging pollutants containing natural phenolic compounds, achieving an 80.53% removal rate with the addition of 0.02 g of laccase within 5 h. Analytical techniques like Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry were used to uncover reaction pathways, demonstrating the presence of radical polymerization and 1, 4 nucleophilic addition. This research utilized TpPa-1 as a carrier for laccase immobilization, promoting oxidation-induced polymerization for efficient pollutant removal. It provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the interplay between emerging pollutants and phenolic compounds in natural environments and enhances the practical application of laccase through immobilization.

Ketorolac removal through photoelectrocatalysis using TiO2 nanotubes in water system

Ketorolac, a highly persistent NSAID of environmental concern, was significantly removed from water (80% removal) through photoelectrocatalysis where titanium dioxide nanotubes prepared by Ti foil electrochemical anodization at 30 V were used as photoanodes. Fifteen milligrams per liter of ketorolac solutions in a 0.05 M Na2SO4 aqueous medium was subjected to irradiation from a 365-nm light with an intensity of 1 mWcm-2 and under an applied potential of 1.3 V (vs. Hg/Hg2SO4/sat.K2SO4) at pH 6.0. When each process (photo and electrocatalysis) was carried out separately, less than 20% drug removal was achieved as monitored through UV-vis spectrophotometry. Through scavenging experiments, direct oxidation on the photogenerated holes and oxidation by hydroxyl radical formation were found to play a key role on ketorolac's degradation. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analyses also showed a significant COD decreased (68%) since the initial COD value was 31.3 mg O2/L and the final COD value was 10.1 mg O2/L. A 48% mineralization was also achieved, as shown by total organic carbon (TOC) analyses. These results showed that electrodes based on titania nanotubes are a promising alternative material for simultaneous photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes in water remediation.

Optimization and validation of an extraction method for the analysis of multi-class emerging contaminants in soil and sediment

Analytical methods for the determination of multi-class emerging contaminants are limited for soil and sediment while they are essential to provide a more complete picture of their distribution in the environment and to understand their fate in different environmental compartments. In this paper, we present the development and optimization of an analytical strategy that combines reliable extraction, purification and the analysis using ultra-pressure liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) of 90 emerging organic contaminants including pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and plasticizers in soil and sediment. To extract a wide range of chemicals, the extraction strategy is based on the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) approach. A number of different options were investigated (buffer, acidification, addition of EDTA, different types and combinations of dispersive SPE etc.) and the effectiveness of the chemical extraction procedure and the clean-up was assessed for two matrices: soil (organic matter content of 9%) and sediment (organic matter content of 1.9%). The method was fully validated for both matrices, in terms of accuracy, linearity, repeatability (intra-day), reproducibility (inter-day), method limits of detection and quantification (LODs and MLOQs, respectively). The final performance showed good accuracy and precision (mean recoveries were between 70 and 120% with relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 20% in most cases), low matrix effects, good linearity for the matrix-matched calibration curve (R2≥0.991) and MLOQs ranged from 0.25 and 10 µg/kg. To demonstrate the applicability and suitability of the validated method, soil and sediment samples from Vietnam, France, Sweden and Mexico were analyzed. The results showed that of the 90 target compounds, a total of 33 were quantified in the sediment and soil samples analyzed. In addition to multi-target analysis, this strategy could be suitable for non-target screening, to provide a more comprehensive view of the contaminants present in the samples.

Hormonal involvement in boosting the vegetative vigour underlying caffeine-related improvements in lentil production

Previous studies have shown that caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) has some potential for its use as a biostimulant ingredient for boosting lentil production at suboptimal temperatures. However, some limitations to its use include its potential side effects as an emerging contaminant and the current lack of knowledge of its mechanism of action. Here, we aimed to study the mechanisms underlying improved lentil production upon caffeine application. Greenhouse-grown plants treated with caffeine (at 10-5 M, 10-4 M, and 10-3 M) were compared to an untreated, control treatment, and both reproductive and vegetative vigour were evaluated in parallel with endogenous foliar concentrations of phytohormones, including both stress and growth-related hormones. Results showed an enhanced lentil production at the highest caffeine concentration (10-3 M) which might be attributed, at least in part, to a greater vegetative vigour. The hormonal profiling revealed a dual effect. Firstly, there was a specific increase in jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) in the short term, which may provide a priming effect. Secondly, abscisic acid (ABA) content kept at low levels and the active cytokinin (CK) isopentenyl adenine (2-iP) increased and persisted at high levels throughout the reproductive stage. Cytokinin-mediated effects on growth, and more specifically the high CK/ABA ratios in leaves, appeared to mediate caffeine-related effects in boosting vegetative vigour. In conclusion, caffeine emerges as a compelling alkaloid for integration into biostimulant formulations due to its favorable effect in boosting lentil production through an improvement of vegetative vigour. These outcomes appear to be modulated by phytohormones, most notably jasmonates, priming plants for improved performance under suboptimal temperatures, and cytokinins, alongside ABA and its associated ratios, collectively enhancing plant growth and reproductive vigour in challenging conditions.

Effects of antibiotics on corncob supported solid-phase denitrification: Denitrification and antibiotics removal performance, mechanism, and antibiotic resistance genes

Solid-phase denitrification (SPD) has been used in wastewater treatment plant effluent to enhance nitrate removal, and antibiotics co-existing in the effluent is a common environmental problem. In this study, it was systematically investigated the effect of single trace sulfamethoxazole (SMX)/trimethoprim (TMP) and their mixture on microbial denitrification performance, the antibiotics removal, and antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in corncob supported SPD system. The average denitrification rate was improved by 46.90% or 61.09% with single 50 µg/L SMX or TMP, while there was no significant inhibition with mixed SMX and TMP. The abundance of dominant denitrifiers (Comamonadaceae family and Azospia) and fermentation bacteria (Ancalomicrobium) were consistent with the denitrification performance of different antibiotics groups. Single SMX and TMP achieved relatively higher denitrification gene and enzyme abundance. Mixed SMX and TMP improved the denitrification gene copies, but they reduced the key denitrification enzymes except for EC 1.7.7.2. Additionally, the removal efficiency of TMP (56.70% ± 3.18%) was higher than that of SMX (25.44% ± 2.62%) in single antibiotic group, and the existence of other antibiotics (i.e. SMX or TMP) had no significant impact on the TMP or SMX removal performance. Biodegradation was the main removal mechanism of SMX and TMP, while sludge and corncob adsorption contributed a little to their removal. SMX had the risk of sulfanilamide resistance genes (SRGs) dissemination. Furthermore, network analysis indicated that Niveibacterium and Bradyrhizobium were the potential hosts of SRGs, which promoted the horizontal transmission of ARGs.

Occurrence, environmental impact and fate of pharmaceuticals in groundwater and surface water: a critical review

In many nations and locations, groundwater serves as the population's primary drinking water supply. However, pharmaceuticals found in groundwater and surface waters may affect aquatic ecosystems and public health. As a result, their existence in natural raw waters are now more widely acknowledged as a concern. This review summarises the evidence of research on pharmaceuticals' occurrence, impact and fate, considering results from different water bodies. Also, various analytical techniques were reviewed to compare different pharmaceuticals' detection frequencies in water bodies. These include liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, owing to LC-MS's high sensitivity and specification, it is the most reported instrument used for analysis. The PRISMA reviewing methodology was adopted based on relevant literature in order to focus on aim of the review. Among other pharmaceuticals reviewed, sulfamethoxazole was found to be the most frequently detected drug in wastewater (up to 100% detection frequency). The most reported pharmaceutical group in this review is antibiotics, with sulfamethoxazole having the highest concentration among the analysed pharmaceuticals in groundwater and freshwater (up to 5600 ng/L). Despite extensive study and analysis on the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment, appropriate wastewater management and disposal of pharmaceuticals in the water environment are not still monitored regularly. Therefore, there is a need for mainstream studies tailored to the surveillance of pharmaceuticals in water bodies to limit environmental risks to human and aquatic habitats in both mid and low-income nations.

Determination of excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter using chemical probes: A comparative and mechanistic study

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle in natural waters. The determination and characterization of the excited triplet state of DOM (³DOM*) have attracted much attention recently. However, the underlying differences of determined ³DOM* through different pathways are not yet fully understood. In this study, the differences and underlying mechanisms of the determined ³DOM* using 2,4-hexadien-1-ol (HDO) through an energy transfer pathway and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) through an electron transfer pathway, were investigated. The results showed that the determined quantum yields of ³DOM* (Φ_3DOM*) for four commercial and four isolated local DOMs are different using HDO ((0.04 ± 0.00) × 10^-2 to (2.9 ± 0.17) × 10^-2)) and TMP ((0.08 ± 0.01) × 10^-2 to (1.2 ± 0.17) × 10^-2), respectively. For 17 DOM-analogs, significant differences were also observed with the quantum yields of their ³DOM* determined using HDO (Φ_HDO) and the triplet-state quantum yield coefficients determined using TMP (f_TMP). It indicates the different reactivity of TMP and HDO with the excited triplet of the chromophores with different structures within the isolated DOM. Based on the experimental and predicted values of f_TMP and Φ_HDO for different DOM-analogs, the impact of substituents on differences in ³DOM* values were further revealed. These results demonstrated that the levels of ³DOM* depended on the chemical functionalities present in the DOM-analogs.

Antimicrobial Transformation Products in the Aquatic Environment: Global Occurrence, Ecotoxicological Risks, and Potential of Antibiotic Resistance

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is concerning for the health of humans, animals, and the environment in a One Health perspective. Assessments of AMR and associated environmental hazards mostly focus on antimicrobial parent compounds, while largely overlooking their transformation products (TPs). This review lists antimicrobial TPs identified in surface water environments and examines their potential for AMR promotion, ecological risk, as well as human health and environmental hazards using in silico models. Our review also summarizes the key transformation compartments of TPs, related pathways for TPs reaching surface waters and methodologies for studying the fate of TPs. The 56 antimicrobial TPs covered by the review were prioritized via scoring and ranking of various risk and hazard parameters. Most data on occurrences to date have been reported in Europe, while little is known about antibiotic TPs in Africa, Central and South America, Asia, and Oceania. Occurrence data on antiviral TPs and other antibacterial TPs are even scarcer. We propose evaluation of structural similarity between parent compounds and TPs for TP risk assessment. We predicted a risk of AMR for 13 TPs, especially TPs of tetracyclines and macrolides. We estimated the ecotoxicological effect concentrations of TPs from the experimental effect data of the parent chemical for bacteria, algae and water fleas, scaled by potency differences predicted by quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for baseline toxicity and a scaling factor for structural similarity. Inclusion of TPs in mixtures with their parent increased the ecological risk quotient over the threshold of one for 7 of the 24 antimicrobials included in this analysis, while only one parent had a risk quotient above one. Thirteen TPs, from which 6 were macrolide TPs, posed a risk to at least one of the three tested species. There were 12/21 TPs identified that are likely to exhibit a similar or higher level of mutagenicity/carcinogenicity, respectively, than their parent compound, with tetracycline TPs often showing increased mutagenicity. Most TPs with increased carcinogenicity belonged to sulfonamides. Most of the TPs were predicted to be mobile but not bioaccumulative, and 14 were predicted to be persistent. The six highest-priority TPs originated from the tetracycline antibiotic family and antivirals. This review, and in particular our ranking of antimicrobial TPs of concern, can support authorities in planning related intervention strategies and source mitigation of antimicrobials toward a sustainable future.

The Impact of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs on the Prokaryotic Community Composition and Selected Bacterial Strains Based on Microcosm Experiments

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are increasingly recognized as potential environmental contaminants that may induce toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. This 3-week microcosm experiment explores the acute impacts of NSAIDs, including diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU), and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), on bacterial communities using a wide range of these substances (200-6000 ppm). The results showed that the NSAID-treated microcosms had higher cell count values than control samples, though the diversity of microbial communities decreased. The isolated heterotrophic bacteria mostly belonged to Proteobacteria, particularly Klebsiella. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed that NSAIDs altered the structure of the bacterial community composition, with the proportion of Proteobacteria aligning with the selective cultivation results. Bacteria had higher resistance to IBU/ASA than to DCF. In DCF-treated microcosms, there has been a high reduction of the number of Bacteroidetes, whereas in the microcosms treated with IBU/ASA, they have remained abundant. The numbers of Patescibacteria and Actinobacteria have decreased across all NSAID-treated microcosms. Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes have tolerated all NSAIDs, even DCF. Cyanobacteria have also demonstrated tolerance to IBU/ASA treatment in the microcosms. The archaeal community structure was also impacted by the NSAID treatments, with Thaumarchaeota abundant in all microcosms, especially DCF-treated microcosms, while Nanoarchaeota is more typical of IBU/ASA-treated microcosms with lower NSAID concentrations. These results indicate that the presence of NSAIDs in aquatic environments could lead to changes in the composition of microbial communities.

Exploring sorption of pesticides and PAHs in microplastics derived from plastic mulch films used in modern agriculture

The sorption and vector effect of microplastics on the transfer of pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as its impact on agriculture remain largely unexplored. This comparative study is first to investigate the sorption behavior of different pesticides and PAHs at environmentally realistic concentrations by model microplastics and microplastics derived from polyethylene mulch films. Sorption was found to be up to 90% higher in the case of microplastics derived from mulch films as opposed to pure polyethylene microspheres. For microplastics from mulch films, the sorption percentages for pesticides in media containing CaCl₂ were reported to be: pyridate (75.68% and 52.44%), fenazaquin (48.54% and 32.02%), pyridaben (45.04% and 56.70%), bifenthrin (74.27% and 25.88%), etofenprox (82.16% and 54.16%) and pyridalyl (97.00% and 29.74%) at 5 μg/L and 200 μg/L pesticide concentration levels respectively. For PAHs, the sorption amounts were: naphthalene (22.03% and 48.00%), fluorene (38.99% and 39.00%), anthracene (64.62% and 68.02%) and pyrene (75.65% and 86.38%) at 5 μg/L and 200 μg/L PAH concentration levels respectively. Sorption was influenced by the octanol-water partition coefficient (log K_ow) and ionic strength. Kinetics of the process in the case of sorption of pesticides were best explained by pseudo-first order kinetic model (R² between 0.90 and 0.98) while the best fitting isotherm model was Dubinin-Radushkevich (R² between 0.92 and 0.99). Results suggest the presence of surface level physi-sorption through a micropore volume filling mechanism and the role of hydrophobic and electrostatic forces. Pesticide desorption data in polyethylene mulch films indicate that pesticides with high log K_ow were almost completely retained in mulch films, while those with lower log K_ow were desorbed rapidly into the surrounding media. Our study highlights the role of microplastics from plastic mulch films as vectors for pesticide and PAH transport at environmentally realistic concentrations and the factors that influence it.

A SWMM-Based Screening Model for Estimating Wastewater Treatment Burden of Pesticides on the Urban Scale

To estimate the treatment load of pesticides for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on an urban scale, we developed a SWMM-based screening model that integrates the mass balance of pesticides in residential soil and the storm-water runoff passing through residential lawns. Furthermore, we introduce an approximate approach that simplifies the simulation using the octanol-water partition coefficients (i.e., log K_OW) of pesticides. The results indicate that the simulated transport factors (i.e., the dissipation kinetics-relevant property from the soil) of systemic pesticides (i.e., log K_OW < 2.0) are constant, whereas those of non-systemic pesticides decrease with increasing log K_OW, indicating that highly lipophilic pesticides are thermodynamically favored for soil absorption. By using the approximate approach, we estimated the total mass of pesticides entering the urban sewer system and the pesticide concentrations in the influent of WWTPs for a midsize city. The results indicate that the estimated concentration of systemic pesticides in the influent is ~9.2 ng L^-1 and that of pesticides with log K_OW values above 3.0 is below 0.84 ng L^-1. The pesticide concentrations are consistent with published field data, indicating that the approximate approach can be applied as preliminary modeling tool to recommend pretreatment values for urban WWTPs. Although the model must be further validated and refined using field data, the screening method can be used to help urban planners and engineers to manage the treatment process of pesticides in WWTPs.

Enhanced degradation of ibuprofen using a combined treatment of plasma and Fenton reactions

Advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) proved to be effective in the degradation of hazardous organic impurities like acids, dyes, antibiotics etc. in the last few decades. AOTs are mainly based on the generation of reactive chemical species (RCS) such as hydroxyl, superoxide radicals etc., which plays an important role in the degradation of organiccompounds. In this work, plasma supported AOT i.e. Fenton reactions have been applied for the degradation of ibuprofen. As compared to traditional AOTs plasma assisted AOT is technologically superior due to its capability to produce RCS at a controlled rate without using chemical agents. This process work at normal room temperature and pressure. Herein, we optimized better operating conditions to generate good plasma discharge and hydroxyl radicals based on critical parameters, including frequency, pulse width and different gases like O₂, Ar etc. Also, the one-pot carbonization method is used for the synthesis of Fe-based ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Fenton reactions. Using plasma-supported Fenton reactions, 88.3 % degradation efficiency is achieved using Fe-OMC catalyst for the ibuprofen degradation. Also, the mineralization of the ibuprofen is studied using total organic carbon (TOC) analysis.

Long-term effects on the agroecosystem of using reclaimed water on commercial crops

The use of reclaimed water for crop irrigation has been proposed as a suitable alternative for farmers in the coastal areas of Mediterranean countries, which suffer from greater water scarcity. In this work we study the impact on the water-soil-plant continuum of using reclaimed water for commercial crops irrigated over a long period, as well as the human risks associated with consuming the vegetables produced. Forty-four CECs were identified in the reclaimed water used for crop irrigation. Of these, twenty-four CECs were identified in the irrigated soil samples analysed. Tramadol, ofloxacin, tonalide, gemfibrozil, atenolol, caffeine, and cetirizine were the pharmaceuticals detected at the highest levels in the water samples (between 11 and 44 μg/L). The CECs with the highest average soil concentrations were tramadol (14.6 μg/kg), followed by cetirizine (13.2 μg/kg) and clarithromycin (12.7 μg/kg). In the irrigated vegetable samples analysed over the study period, carbamazepine, lidocaine, and caffeine were only detected at levels from 0.1 to 1.7 μg/kg. The CEC accumulation rate detected in the edible parts of the vegetables permanently irrigated with reclaimed water was very low (~1 %), whereas it was 33 % in the soils. The results revealed that consuming fruits harvested from plants irrigated for a long period with reclaimed water does not represent a risk to human health, opening the door to a circular economy of water. Nevertheless, for crop irrigation, future studies need to be conducted over longer periods and in other matrices to provide more scientific data on the safety of using reclaimed water.

Utility of a non-target screening method to explore the chlorination of similar sulfonamide antibiotics: Pathways and NCl intermediates

Sulfonamides (SAs) are ubiquitous antibiotics that are increasingly detected in aquatic environments and can react with free available chlorine to produce transformation products (TPs) during disinfection. However, the TPs generated during chlorination remains poorly understood. Here, a non-target screening method based on the PyHRMS program was used to assess the transformation pathways of five SAs, particularly the transient NCl intermediates, during a simulated chlorination process. We observed 210 TPs during SA chlorination using a non-target screening method based on high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the reaction mechanisms mainly included chlorine substitution, desulfonation, and hydroxylation. Among the TPs, 87 were tentatively proposed to be NCl intermediates as they instantly disappeared after quenching with Na₂S₂O₃. The MS² spectra of 13 of these potential NCl intermediates were obtained, and all displayed an [M-Cl]⁺ fragment. A diagnostic fragment ion (DFI) strategy was applied to explore the structural relationship between parent compounds and TPs. Based on the result, five SAs and 101 TPs (if their MS² spectra were available) could be connected through the same fragments, and this method was also proved effective in a real wastewater treatment plant effluent sample. We believe this novel method can help explore the TPs of organic compounds during chlorination in drinking water plants.

Development of a quantitative structure-activity relationship model for predicting quantum yield of hydroxyl radical generation from organic compounds

Organic compounds are capable of generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) through their excited triplet states in natural water. It is of significance to reveal the underlying mechanism of the generation and obtain the generation quantum yield of ˙OH from organic compounds for better understanding of its involvement in indirect photochemical processes in the environment. In this study, the ˙OH quantum yields (Φ_˙OH) of 20 organic compounds were determined by photochemical experiments. The calculated Φ_˙OH values for the selected organic compounds vary from (1.2 ± 0.39) × 10^-5 to (7.2 ± 0.16) × 10^-4. A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model for log Φ_˙OH was developed and the established model was proven to have a proper goodness of fit, robustness, and predictive ability. The QSAR model was successfully used to predict the Φ_˙OH value of organic pollutants. Mechanistic interpretation showed that the electron distribution and the electronegativity of organic compounds are the most important factors that determine the generation of ˙OH. The results are helpful for understanding the generation mechanism of ˙OH from organic compounds and also provide insights into the generation of ˙OH from dissolved organic matter in natural water.

Determination of pharmaceuticals and metabolites in sludge and hydrochar after hydrothermal carbonization using sonication-QuEChERS extraction method and UHPLC LTQ/Orbitrap MS

Pharmaceuticals (PhACs) are an important group of emerging contaminants that are released continuously in the environment from wastewater treatments plants (WWTPs). They can produce biological effects even though at very low concentrations. Conventional WWTPs are not able to remove or degrade completely emerging pollutants resulting in the presence of PhACs in sewage sludge after wastewater treatment. PhACs are found in sludge at low ppb-ppt levels, and their analysis and detection is a difficult task due to the complexity of sewage sludge matrices. Hydrothermal carbonization is currently being proposed as a suitable conversion technology for sewage sludge management to recover valuable products and to be used for soil amendment. In this work, a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS)-based methodology with a dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution linear ion trap-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS), operated in positive ionization mode, was adopted to investigate 33 multiclass pharmaceuticals in sewage sludge and in hydrochar produced after hydrothermal carbonization. The analytical method was first optimized studying various extraction parameters and finally validated in terms of linearity, recovery, intra and inter-day precisions, expanded uncertainty (%U)/Horrat ratio at three spiking levels, matrix-effects (ME), process efficiency (PE), and limits of detection and quantification. The developed methodology fulfilled all analytical requirements and was finally applied to sludge samples from the WWTP of Ioannina city where a group of antibiotics was detected at concentrations up to 15 ng g^-1 and psychiatric drugs such as amisulpride, clozapine, and citalopram were detected at higher concentration levels up to 205, 87.4 and 63.2 ng g^-1, respectively. The method was also applied to hydrothermally treated sludge sample under different reaction conditions. Most of the antibiotic compounds were not detected, and several psychiatric drugs such as mirtazapine, bupropion, valsartan, diazepam, and caffeine were found at concentrations below the LOQ.

Evaluating chemicals of emerging concern in the Ganga River at the two major cities Prayagraj and Varanasi through validated analytical approaches

Evaluating environmental water quality means to assess and protect the environment against unfriendly impacts from various organic impurities emerging from industrial emissions and those released during harvesting. Potential risks related with release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides and pharmaceuticals (PhAcs), and personal care products (PCPs) into the environment have turned into an increasingly serious issue in ecological safety. Monitoring helps in control of chemicals and ecological status compliance to safeguard specific water uses, for example, drinking water abstraction. A longitudinal review was carried out for 55 different persistent organic pollutants (POPs) for the Ganga River which passes through the urban areas of Prayagraj and Varanasi, India, through validated analytical approaches and measurement uncertainty (MU) estimation to assess their potential use for routine analysis. Furthermore, environmental risk assessment (ERA) carried out in the present study has revealed risk quotient (RQ) higher than 1 in a portion of the aquatic bodies. Using a conservative RQ strategy, POPs were assessed for having extensive risks under acute and chronic exposure, proposing that there is currently critical ecological risk identified with these compounds present in the Ganga River. In general, these outcomes demonstrate a significant contribution for focusing on measures and feasible techniques to minimize the unfavorable effects of contaminants on the aquatic environment.

Mineralization of Riluzole by Heterogeneous Fenton Oxidation Using Natural Iron Catalysts

Fenton (H2O2/Fe2+) system is a simple and efficient advanced oxidation technology (AOT) for the treatment of organic micropollutants in water and soil. However, it suffers from some drawbacks including high amount of the catalyst, acid pH requirement, sludge formation and slow regeneration of Fe2+ ions. If these drawbacks are surmounted, Fenton system can be the best choice AOT for the removal of persistent organics from water and soil. In this work, it was attempted to replace the homogeneous catalyst with a heterogeneous natural iron-based catalyst for the decomposition of H2O2 into oxidative radical species, mainly hydroxyl (HO•) and hydroperoxyl radicals (HO2•). The natural iron-based catalyst is hematite-rich (α-Fe2O3) and contains a nonnegligible amount of magnetite (Fe3O4) indicating the coexistence of Fe (III) and Fe(II) species. A pseudo-first order kinetics was determined for the decomposition of H2O2 by the iron-based solid catalyst with a rate constant increasing with the catalyst dose. The catalytic decomposition of H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals in the presence of the natural Fe-based catalyst was confirmed by the hydroxylation of benzoic acid into salicylic acid. The natural Fe-based catalyst/H2O2 system was applied for the degradation of riluzole in water. It was demonstrated that the smaller the particle size of the catalyst, the larger its surface area and the greater its catalytic activity towards H2O2 decomposition into hydroxyl radicals. The degradation of riluzole can occur at all pH levels in the range 3.0–12.0 with a rate and efficiency greater than H2O2 oxidation alone, indicating that the natural Fe-based catalyst can function at any pH without the need to control the pH by the addition of chemicals. An improvement in the efficiency and kinetics of the degradation of riluzole was observed under UV irradiation for both homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton systems. The results chromatography analysis demonstrate that the degradation of riluzole starts by the opening of the triazole ring by releasing nitrate, sulfate, and fluoride ions. The reuse of the catalyst after heat treatment at 500 °C demonstrated that the heat-treated catalyst retained an efficiency >90% after five cycles. The results confirmed that the natural sources of iron, as a heterogeneous catalyst in a Fenton-like system, is an appropriate replacement of a Fe2+ homogeneous catalyst. The reuse of the heterogeneous catalyst after a heat-treatment represents an additional advantage of using a natural iron-based catalyst in Fenton-like systems.

Occurrence, transport and environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay, China based on stir bar sorptive extraction

In recent years, research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the marine environment has attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, more work is needed to improve PPCPs detection methods, specifically for seawater environments. An analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) had been developed and fully optimized for the pretreatment and detection of ten widely used PPCPs that are commonly found in seawater samples. By optimizing several variables including the material of the stir bars, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and desorption time, the optimized method has achieved excellent results in the detection and quantification of target PPCPs with detection limits ranging from 0.03 to 1 ng/L. The distribution of target PPCPs at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay was successfully determined by this method, and the concentrations and detection frequencies of PPCPs varied greatly from N.D. to 449.36 ng/L and from 9.1 % to 100 %, respectively. Moreover, the distributions of PPCPs were explained by the Lagrangian particle-tracking model, and the results showed that the Tuandao sewage treatment plant had the most significant impact on the study area. The environmental risk assessment results showed that several target PPCPs might pose risks to aquatic organisms. In particular, triclocarban should receive more attention and the risk quotients of the mixtures (MRQ) should not be ignored.

Development and application of a membrane assisted solvent extraction-molecularly imprinted polymer based passive sampler for monitoring of selected pharmaceuticals in surface water

In this work, we demonstrate the development, evaluation and pre-liminary application of a novel passive sampler for monitoring of selected pharmaceuticals in environmental waters. The samplers were calibrated in laboratory-based experiments to obtain sampling rates (Rs) for carbamazepine, methocarbamol, etilefrine, venlafaxine and nevirapine. Passive sampling was based on the diffusion of the target pharmaceuticals from surface water through a membrane bag which housed an ionic liquid as a green receiving solvent and a molecularly imprinted polymer. Effects of biofouling, deployment time and solvent type for the receiver phase were optimized for selective uptake of analytes in surface water. Notably, there was a decrease in the uptake of selected pharmaceuticals and consequently a decrease in their sampling rates in the presence of biofouling. The optimum matrix-matched sampling rates ranged from 0.0007 - 0.0018 L d^-1 whilst the method detection and quantification limits ranged from 2.45 - 3.26 ng L^-1 and 8.06 - 10.81 ng L^-1, respectively. The optimized passive sampler was deployed in a dam situated in the heart of a typical highly populated township in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Only etilefrine and methocarbamol were detected and quantified at maximum time weighted average concentrations of 12.88 and 72.29 ng L^-1, respectively.

A comprehensive review of various approaches for treatment of tertiary wastewater with emerging contaminants: what do we know?

In the last few decades, environmental contaminants (ECs) have been introduced into the environment at an alarming rate. There is a risk to human health and aquatic ecosystems from trace levels of emerging contaminants, including hospital wastewater (HPWW), cosmetics, personal care products, endocrine system disruptors, and their transformation products. Despite the fact that these pollutants have been introduced or detected relatively recently, information about their characteristics, actions, and impacts is limited, as are the technologies to eliminate them efficiently. A wastewater recycling system is capable of providing irrigation water for crops and municipal sewage treatment, so removing ECs before wastewater reuse is essential. Water treatment processes containing advanced ions of biotic origin and ECs of biotic origin are highly recommended for contaminants. This study introduces the fundamentals of the treatment of tertiary wastewater, including membranes, filtration, UV (ultraviolet) irradiation, ozonation, chlorination, advanced oxidation processes, activated carbon (AC), and algae. Next, a detailed description of recent developments and innovations in each component of the emerging contaminant removal process is provided.

Fate of selected pharmaceuticals in hospital and municipal wastewater effluent: occurrence, removal, and environmental risk assessment

The concentrations and distribution of β-blockers, lipid regulators, and psychiatric and cancer drugs in the influent and effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the effluent of 16 hospitals that discharge into the wastewater treatment plant mentioned in this study at two sampling dates in summer and winter were examined. The pharmaceutical contribution of hospitals to municipal wastewater was determined. The removal of target pharmaceuticals was evaluated in a WWTP consisting of conventional biological treatment using activated sludge. Additionally, the potential environmental risk for the aquatic receiving environments (salt lake) was assessed. Beta-blockers and psychiatric drugs were detected in high concentrations in the wastewater samples. Atenolol (919 ng/L) from β-blockers and carbamazepine (7008 ng/L) from psychiatric pharmaceuticals were detected at the highest concentrations in hospital wastewater. The total pharmaceutical concentration determined at the WWTP influent and effluent was between 335 and 737 ng/L in summer and between 174 and 226 ng/L in winter. The concentrations detected in hospital effluents are higher than the concentrations detected in WWTP. The total pharmaceutical contributions from hospitals to the WWTP in summer and winter were determined to be 2% and 4%, respectively. Total pharmaceutical removal in the WWTP ranged from 23 to 54%. According to the risk ratios, atenolol could pose a high risk (risk quotient > 10) for fish in summer and winter. There are different reasons for the increase in pharmaceutical consumption in recent years. One of these reasons is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going on for 2 years. In particular, hospitals were operated at full capacity during the pandemic, and the occurrence and concentration of pharmaceuticals used for the therapy of COVID-19 patients has increased in hospital effluent. Pandemic conditions have increased the tendency of people to use psychiatric drugs. It is thought that beta-blocker consumption has increased due to cardiovascular diseases caused by COVID-19. Therefore, the environmental risk of pharmaceuticals for aquatic organisms in hospital effluent should be monitored and evaluated.

Combined toxicity and toxicity persistence of antidepressants citalopram and mirtazapine to zooplankton Daphnia magna

Citalopram (CTP) and mirtazapine (MTP) are two typical psychoactive drugs used for the depression treatment. As emerging pollutants, CTP and MTP have raised concern because of their harmful effect on aquatic organisms. Therefore, the ecotoxicological risk of these two pollutants to aquatic organisms should be given more attention. In this study, the effects of CTP and MTP on the feeding rate, heartbeat, nutritional enzymes, and their related gene expression of D. magna were investigated under single and binary mixture pollutant exposure. Subsequently, the recovery of exposed D. magna was studied to assess the toxic persistence of those pollutants. After 24-h exposure, the ingestion rate decreased by 34.2% and 21.5%, in the group of 1.45 mg/L CTP (C-H) and binary mixture with high concentration (Mix-H), respectively. After 24-h recovery, the feeding rate of D. magna was stimulated by a compensatory response. Over the exposure period, the heartbeat rate of D. magna increased significantly in the groups of CTP, MTP, and their binary mixture with low concentration (Mix-L), and then, their heartbeat rate was recovered during the recovery period. The activity of α-amylase (AMS) and trypsin were significantly changed in most of the exposed daphnia, both during the exposure and recovery period. CTP/MTP exposure stimulated the expression of the AMS gene. MTP and Mix-H exposure inhibited the expression of the trypsin gene and the other groups stimulated its expression. After 24-h recovery, the stimulating or inhibitory effects were alleviated. There were different responses between gene expression and enzyme activity. In conclusion, our results highlighted the toxic effects at high concentrations of single and mixed pollution of CTP and MTP on the feeding rate, heartbeat, AMS and trypsin enzyme activity, and expression of related genes of D. magna to assess the environment risk of them.

Ecotoxicological effects of human and veterinary antibiotics on water flea (Daphnia magna)

In the present study, we assessed the ecotoxicological effects of selected human and veterinary antibiotics to D. magna. Ecological risk assessment was done by calculating the risk quotients (RQs) of the antibiotics to the species. Results showed that enrofloxacin, a veterinary fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was the most toxic against D. magna with a 48 h EC₅₀ value of 28.59 mg/l. The binary mixture of fluoroquinolones was also more toxic to the species than binary mixtures of macrolides. Fecundity in organisms in negative control was higher than fecundity in organisms exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of the four antibiotics. Enrofloxacin also has a moderate risk to the species with RQ values of 0.199 and 0.416 in surface waters and wastewaters, respectively. Antibiotics pose a greater ecological risk when present in mixtures in the aquatic environment. Environmental standards for pharmaceuticals should incorporate mixture toxicity data to ensure accurate protection of non-target organisms in polluted environments.

Electrochemical degradation of amoxicillin in acidic aqueous medium using TiO2-based electrodes modified by oxides of transition metals

One of the most widely used antibiotics is amoxicillin (AMX), which is the most widely used in humans and animals, but it is discharged metabolically due to its indigestibility. Conventional biological and physicochemical methods for removing AMX from water are not enough to mineralize it; it is only concentrated and transferred to produce new residues that require further processing to remove the new residues. In this research, naked and modified surfaces with TiO₂ nanotubes (TiO_2,nt) electrophoretically modified with PbO₂, IrO₂, RuO₂, and Ta₂O₅ were used to evaluate their efficiency in the electrochemical degradation of AMX in acid media (0.1 mol L^-1 H₂SO₄). After their comparison, Pb-Ta 50:50|TiO_2,nt|Ti showed the highest removal efficiency of AMX (44.71%) with the lowest specific energy consumption (8.69 ± 0.78 kWh Kg COD^-1) and the average instant current efficiency of 26.67 ± 9.19%, in comparison with the others naked and modified surfaces of TiO_2,nt∣Ti.

Occurrence of priority substances in urban wastewaters of Istanbul and the estimation of the associated risks in the effluents

Increase in the contamination of the aquatic environments is a global challenge; hence, understanding the sources of priority substances (PSs) is essential. In an attempt to implement this principle, a year-long monitoring covering all seasons was carried out in the influents and effluents of four largest wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Istanbul. Results obtained showed the presence of 48 PSs (66% of the target compounds) including pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs), alkylphenols, phthalates, and metals ranging from low nanograms to micrograms per liter. Priority hazardous substances that were banned for long were still found to be present in wastewaters. PAHs, DLCs, alkylphenols, and metals were found to be present in all samples. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and DLCs were detected in more than 80% of the influent samples. Trichloromethane had the highest concentrations among the most frequently (80-100%) detected PSs in the influents and effluents. The potential risks that may arise from WWTP effluents containing PSs were estimated by calculating the risk quotients (RQs). Upon the risk estimation conducted on the PSs in effluents, monitoring of the endrin, alpha-cypermethrin, theta-cypermethrin, zeta-cypermethrin, quinoxyfen, bifenox, benzo-ghi-perylene, and DEHP is recommended for the WWTP effluents.

Emerging contaminants of high concern for the environment: Current trends and future research

Wastewater is contaminated water that must be treated before it may be transferred into other rivers and lakes in order to prevent further groundwater pollution. Over the last decade, research has been conducted on a wide variety of contaminants, but the emerging contaminants are those caused primarily by micropollutants, endocrine disruptors (EDs), pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hormones, and toxins, as well as industrially-related synthetic dyes and dye-containing hazardous pollutants. Most emerging pollutants did not have established guidelines, but even at low concentrations they could have harmful effects on humans and aquatic organisms. In order to combat the above ecological threats, huge efforts have been done with a view to boosting the effectiveness of remediation procedures or developing new techniques for the detection, quantification and efficiency of the samples. The increase of interest in biotechnology and environmental engineering gives an opportunity for the development of more innovative ways to water treatment remediation. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of emerging sources of contaminants, detection technologies, and treatment strategies. The goal of this review is to evaluate adsorption as a method for treating emerging pollutants, as well as sophisticated and cost-effective approaches for treating emerging contaminants.

MXene-based hybrid composites as photocatalyst for the mitigation of pharmaceuticals

Environmental contamination is a burning issue and has gained global attention in the present era. Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants affecting the natural environment worldwide owing to their extensive consumption particularly in developing countries where self-medication is a common practice. These pharmaceuticals or their degraded active metabolites enter water bodies via different channels and are continuous threat to the whole ecological system. There is a dire need to find efficient approaches for their removal from all environmental matrices. Photocatalysis is one of the most effective and simple approach, however, finding a suitable photocatalyst is a challenging task. Recently, MXenes (two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides), a relatively new material has attracted increasing interest as photocatalysts due to their exceptional properties, such as large surface area, appreciable safety, huge interlayer spacing, thermal conductivity, and environmental flexibility. This review describes the recent advancements of MXene-based composites and their photocatalytic potential for the elimination of pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, present limitations and future research requirements are recommended to attain more benefits of MXene-based composites for the purification of wastewater.

Fate, modeling, and human health risk of organic contaminants present in tomato plants irrigated with reclaimed water under real-world field conditions

Using reclaimed water to irrigate crops can be an important route for organic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) to be introduced into agricultural production and thus find their way into the food chain. This work aims to establish accumulation models for the different parts of a crop (fruit/leaves/roots) and the soil of some of the most commonly detected CECs in reclaimed water, through field trials in greenhouses. For this, tomato plants were permanently irrigated under realistic agricultural conditions with a mixture of the selected compounds at approx. 1 μg/L. A total of 30 contaminants were analyzed belonging to different compound categories. A modified QuEChERS extraction method followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry was the procedure used. The study revealed the presence of 21 target contaminants in the tomatoes, and 18 CECs in the leaves, roots, and soil. The average total concentration of pesticides detected in the tomatoes was 3 μg/kg f.w., whereas the average total load of pharmaceuticals was 5.8 μg/kg f.w. after three months, at the time of crop harvesting. The levels of pharmaceutical products and pesticides in the non-edible tissues were up to 3.5 and 2.1 μg/kg f.w., respectively, in the leaves and up to 89.3 and 31.3 μg/kg f.w., respectively, in the roots. In the case of the soil samples, the pesticide concentration found after crop harvesting was below 11.4 μg/kg d.w., and less than 3.0 μg/kg d.w. for pharmaceuticals. Overall, the concentration levels of CECs detected in the tomatoes, which were permanently irrigated with contaminated reclaimed water, do not pose a risk to human health via dietary intake.

A synthetical methodology for identifying priority pollutants in reclaimed water based on meta-analysis

Wastewater reclamation and reuse is an increasing global project, while the reclamation treatment on wastewater does not completely remove all pollutants in water. The residual pollutants in reclaimed water would cause potential risk on human health and ecosystem safety during the long-term use. It is impossible to analyze and control all pollutants one by one in practice, therefore, identification and control of priority pollutants will be efficient strategy to ensure the safe use of reclaimed water. An integrated three-step methodology for identifying priority pollutants in reclaimed water was proposed in this study. First, a comprehensive literature survey on the occurrence of pollutants in reclaimed water was conducted, and a dataset D_PR for pollutants occurrence in reclaimed water was established, containing 1,113 pollutants. Second, 611 chemicals that had been recommended as hazardous pollutants for various water bodies in previous literatures were summarized, and a dataset D_HP for hazardous pollutants in water was obtained. Third, meta-analysis on these two datasets (D_PR and D_HP) was performed, a new dataset D_HPR for hazardous pollutants in reclaimed water was established, including 265 candidates. Finally, 59 substances out of dataset D_HPR were identified as priority pollutants for reclaimed water based on their recommendation frequency. It is expected that this synthetical methodology will provide powerful support for scientific evaluating and managing water pollution and ensuring safe use of reclaimed water.

Effect assessment of reclaimed waters and carbamazepine exposure on the thyroid axis of Xenopus laevis: Gene expression modifications

Reclaimed water (RW) obtained from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is used for irrigation, groundwater recharge, among other potential uses. Although most pollutants are removed, traces of them are frequently found, which can affect organisms and alter the environment. The presence of a myriad of contaminants in RW makes it a complex mixture with very diverse effects and interactions. A previous study, in which tadpoles were exposed to RW and RW spiked with Carbamazepine (CBZ), presented slight thyroid gland stimulation, as suggested by the development acceleration of tadpoles and histological findings in the gland provoked by RW, regardless of the CBZ concentration. To complement this study, the present work analysed the putative molecular working mechanism by selecting six genes coding for the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSHβ), thyroid hormone metabolising enzymes (DIO2, DIO3), thyroid receptors (THRA, THRB), and a thyroid hormone-induced DNA binding protein (Kfl9). Transcriptional activity was studied by Real-Time PCR (RT-PCR) in brains, hind limbs, and tails on exposure days 1, 7, and 21. No significant differences were observed between treatments for each time point, but slight alterations were noted when the time response was analysed. The obtained results indicate that the effects of RW or RW spiked with CBZ are negligible for the genes analysed during the selected exposure periods.

Presence of diclofenac, estradiol, and ethinylestradiol in Manzanares River (Spain) and their toxicity to zebrafish embryo development

Diclofenac (DCF), 17-β-estradiol (E2), and 17-α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) are emerging pollutants included in the first watch list agreed by European countries and set in the EU Water Directive. The objective of the present study was the analytical monitoring of DCF, E2, and EE2 in surface water and sediment of the Manzanares River in a stretch that crosses the city of Madrid, Spain, and to assess whether such environmental levels could affect the development of aquatic vertebrates through a zebrafish embryo-larval assay. Samples taken during two campaigns in the spring of 2015 were analyzed for DCF, E2, and EE2 by LC-MS or GC-MS. The levels of E2 and EE2 measured in surface water and sediments of the Manzanares were within the ranges reported in other Spanish and European studies; however, DCF levels were higher in the present study. The zebrafish embryos exposed to the Manzanares River water (0-144h) showed lethal effects and sublethal effects (developmental delay, bradycardia, and reduced locomotion). Nevertheless, these effects were not primarily associated with the levels of DCF, E2, and EE2 present in the Manzanares River, because representative mixtures of the field study prepared in the laboratory did not exhibit such toxicity to the zebrafish embryos.

Modeling degradation kinetics of gemfibrozil and naproxen in the UV/chlorine system: Roles of reactive species and effects of water matrix

The UV/chlorine system has been regarded as an efficient oxidation technology for the removal of aqueous micropollutants. However, the roles of the possible radical species for this system on the elimination under environmentally relevant conditions/real waters were still largely unknown. Herein, the specific roles of radical species in the UV/chlorine oxidation degradation of gemfibrozil and naproxen as representative micropollutants were quantified by a steady-state kinetic prediction model considering the effects of water matrices. Overall, the model predicted results are consistent with the experimental data well. •OH and reactive chlorine species (RCS, such as Cl•, ClO•, and Cl₂•^-) contributions to gemfibrozil and naproxen degradation were water matrix specific. In pure water, both primary reactive species (i.e., •OH and Cl•) and secondary species ClO• dominated gemfibrozil and naproxen degradation, and their individual and the sum of the contributions to degradation rates reduced with pH increase of from 5 to 9. In the presence of Cl^-, we found that Cl₂•^- and in particular ClO• were responsible for the enhanced degradation with increasing Cl^- concentrations due to the considerable ClO• reactivity of gemfibrozil (1.93 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1) and naproxen (9.24 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1) and the rapid transformation of Cl₂•^- to ClO•. The presence of HCO₃^- notably facilitated the degradation in the UV/chlorine process because of the generation of CO₃•^-. CO₃•^- showed high reactivity with gemfibrozil and naproxen corresponding to respective second-order reaction rate constants of 2.45 × 10⁷ and 3.50 × 10⁷ M^-1 s^-1. Dissolved organic matter induced obvious scavenging for •OH, Cl•, and ClO• and greatly retarded the degradation. The constructed model considering the effects of above water matrix has successfully predicted the oxidation degradation kinetics in real waters, and both •OH and CO₃•^- are the predominant reactive species in the degradation. This study is helpful for comprehensive understanding the roles of possible radical species in micropollutant removal by UV/chlorine oxidation under real water matrix.

Validation of a quick and easy extraction method for the determination of emerging contaminants and pesticide residues in agricultural soils

Treated wastewater is currently used in the agricultural sector to solve the lack of availability of freshwater in many regions. However, reclaimed water can contain multiclass of organic contaminants. Therefore, the soil can become a reservoir of agricultural (e.g. pesticides) and urban (e.g. pharmaceuticals) contaminants. Consequently, the evaluation of this contamination process is necessary for assessing its potential human and environmental negative effects. Due to the low concentration levels, different chemical properties and the complexity of the matrix, an efficient sample preparation step for achieving adequate sensitivity and robust analysis in the soil is needed. The aim of this study was to develop a quick and easy extraction method based on a QuEChERS procedure for the determination of 27 organic contaminants in agricultural soil samples. The procedure was based on a salting-out extraction with acidified acetonitrile, followed by a dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE). A liquid chromatography-tandem mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system was applied for the determination and quantification of the selected target analytes. The main benefits of this analytical approach are:•Reduction/elimination of majority of the interferences improving the sensitivity of the method.•Robust simultaneous determination of a multiclass of organic contaminants with very different physicochemical properties.

Simple and effective removal of psychiatric pharmaceuticals from wastewater treatment plant effluents by magnetite red mud nanoparticles

Psychological disorders due to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the consumption of psychiatric pharmaceuticals on a global scale in last year. These compounds reach wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) through sewerage system and are not sufficiently removed by using conventional treatment process. Psychiatric drugs released with WWTP effluent may cause possible risks to the receiving aquatic environment. Also, two antidepressants have been included in the "watch list" in 2020. Therefore, simple and relatively cost effective removal of psychiatric drugs from wastewaters becomes important. Magnetite red mud nanoparticles (RM-NPs) synthesized was applied for the removal of psychiatric drugs (fluoxetine, paroxetine, carbamazepine, diazepam, and lorazepam) in WWTP effluent first time in this study. The adsorption of carbamazepine as a model compound was fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Freundlich isotherm model better represented the sorption data than the Langmuir model. High adsorption capacity (90.5 mg/g) was reached at 30 min contact time at pH 6.5-7.0 at 25 °C. The adsorption rate was described by the pseudo second order model and its rate control mechanism was controlled by film diffusion. The magnetite RM-NPs were efficiently used for the removal of carbamazepine from real WWTP effluents. The adsorption capacity and the magnetic separability of the regenerated magnetite RM-NPs were unaffected five cycles. Due to its simple application, low cost and high adsorption capacity, magnetite RM-NPs can be recommended as a better adsorbent comparing to commercial adsorbents to remove psychiatric drugs from WWTP effluents.

Do initial concentration and activated sludge seasonality affect pharmaceutical biotransformation rate constants?

Pharmaceuticals find their way to the aquatic environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Biotransformation plays an important role in mitigating environmental risks; however, a mechanistic understanding of involved processes is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential relationships between first-order biotransformation rate constants (k_b) of nine pharmaceuticals and initial concentration of the selected compounds, and sampling season of the used activated sludge inocula. Four-day bottle experiments were performed with activated sludge from WWTP Groesbeek (The Netherlands) of two different seasons, summer and winter, spiked with two environmentally relevant concentrations (3 and 30 nM) of pharmaceuticals. Concentrations of the compounds were measured by LC-MS/MS, microbial community composition was assessed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and k_b values were calculated. The biodegradable pharmaceuticals were acetaminophen, metformin, metoprolol, terbutaline, and phenazone (ranked from high to low biotransformation rates). Carbamazepine, diatrizoic acid, diclofenac, and fluoxetine were not converted. Summer and winter inocula did not show significant differences in microbial community composition, but resulted in a slightly different k_b for some pharmaceuticals. Likely microbial activity was responsible instead of community composition. In the same inoculum, different k_b values were measured, depending on initial concentration. In general, biodegradable compounds had a higher k_b when the initial concentration was higher. This demonstrates that Michealis-Menten kinetic theory has shortcomings for some pharmaceuticals at low, environmentally relevant concentrations and that the pharmaceutical concentration should be taken into account when measuring the k_b in order to reliably predict the fate of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP.
