Abstract
Background The impact of exposure to fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm, PM2.5) and greenness during early two year of life on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms, especially under the combined influence of the two factors, and the sensitive periods of exposure during the early life, remain underexplored. Objective This cross-sectional study recruited 108 children with ASD and aimed to quantify the independent and combined effects of PM2.5 and greenness exposure on ASD symptoms during the first two years of life. Methods We collected PM2.5 levels and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values to reflect PM2.5 exposure and greenness levels, meanwhile, assessing ASD symptoms with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and its sub-scales (sensory, relating, stereotypic behavior, language, and social independence) scores. We identified six sensitive exposure periods: 6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months, 19-24 months after birth, and the first and second years after birth. We investigated the independent effects of PM2.5 and greenness on ASD symptoms using multiple linear or logistic regression for continuous or categorical symptom scores, and explored their additive interaction and mediation effects. Results Multiple linear models showed reduced total ABC, relating, and social independence scores with greenness exposure at 19-24 months after birth, while 7-12 months and first year exposures benefited social independence. Logistic models showed that PM2.5 exposures during 13-18 months after birth increased symptoms of stereotypic behavior, while low greenness exposure during 19-24 months after birth heightened the risk of social independence impairment. We found high levels of PM2.5 and low greenness during the 13-18 months after birth increased the risk of overall severity. Greenness exposure during 6 months after birth could mitigate the effects of PM2.5 exposures during 13-18 months. Conclusion Our findings underscore the importance of reducing air pollution and enhancing greenness to mitigate ASD symptoms.

Abstract
Evidence on the effects of green and blue spaces on childhood cardiometabolic health is inconsistent and mostly cross-sectional. We assessed the associations of green and blue spaces exposure at birth 4, 7, and 10 years (to identify vulnerable periods of exposure) and as longitudinal trajectories (to identify the longitudinal effect over time) with cardiometabolic outcomes at 10 years. Among 4669 participants from a population-based birth cohort, we assessed the residential normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and distance to urban green and blue spaces at each time point using geographic information systems and standardized by dividing the observed value by the standard deviation. Longitudinal exposure trajectories were derived using latent class mixed models. At 10 years, we measured body mass index, fat mass index, android-to-gynoid fat ratio, blood pressure, and metabolic outcomes. We defined overweight/obesity (World Health Organization), high blood pressure (American Academy of Pediatrics), and metabolic syndrome (IDEFICS). No significant associations were observed between natural spaces exposure and adiposity outcomes. We found an inverse association between distance to nearest blue space at birth and systolic blood pressure z-scores, and a positive association between distance to nearest green space at 7 and 10 years and metabolic syndrome score (p < 0.05). Children in the descending NDVI500m trajectory, compared to those in the high stable trajectory, showed lower diastolic blood pressure z-scores and metabolic syndrome scores (p < 0.05). However, after multiple testing corrections, all associations lost statistical significance. This study did not find robust associations between natural spaces during key developmental periods and cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
Existing studies have found the health implications of greenness on cardiovascular health, but largely focus on greenspace rather than visible greenness. We aimed to investigate the relationship between visible greenness within the community life circle and atrial fibrillation (AF). Our study included 11,539 permanent residents from a large prospective cohort in a megacity of southern China from 2015 to 2017. We generated 15-minute walking isochrone for each study participant as the community life circle and combined it with green view index (GVI) to estimate corresponding exposure to residential greenness. GVI was calculated utilizing street view images and a fully convolutional neural network tailored for evaluating urban environments. We combined logistic regression model and a doubly-robust approach to explore the relationship between GVI and AF. Mediation analyses were used to assess the mediating role of air pollution, body mass index (BMI) and exercise time on the relationship between GVI and AF. We found that each IQR increase in GVI exposure was associated with a 22.6 % (95 % CI: 8.7 %, 34.1 %) reduction in the risk of AF. The mediation effect of PM1 on the relationship between GVI and AF was also identified. Higher visible greenness exposure within community life circle was associated with reduced risk of AF among urban residents. Visible greenness within urban community areas should be emphasized as a solution to promote cardiovascular health.

Abstract
While growing evidence highlights the benefits of green and blue spaces for physical and mental health, their combined effects on youth visual acuity remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of green and blue spaces with visual acuity in youths. We analyzed data from the 2023 Common Disease and Health Risk Factors Surveillance and Intervention Program among students in Shandong Province, China. Generalized linear mixed-effects models were employed to investigate the independent associations of green and blue spaces with visual acuity in youths. To explore potential interactions, an interaction term for green and blue spaces was incorporated. Quantile g-computation (Qgcomp) models were applied to evaluate their combined effects. Compared to the lowest quartile, higher quartiles (Q2, Q3, and Q4) of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), and modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) were significantly associated with improved visual acuity in both eyes. Additionally, each 0.1 unit increase in NDVI500, EVI500, NDWI500, and MNDWI500 was associated with 0.008 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.007, 0.010), 0.003 (0.002, 0.004), 0.054 (0.028, 0.080), and 0.010 (0.002, 0.018) improvements in right-eye visual acuity, with similar findings for the left eye. A significant interaction was observed between NDVI and NDWI (all P for interaction < 0.001), and combined exposure to green and blue spaces was positively associated with visual acuity (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, demographic and lifestyle factors modified the associations of blue and green spaces with visual acuity levels in youths. Greater exposure to green and blue spaces may benefit visual health in youths, with potential interactive and combined effects. Implementing policies to enhance the availability of green and blue spaces around schools may offer opportunities to alleviate visual impairment in youths.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Whether physical activity could reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. This study was to investigate the relationship of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) with AF incidence among Chinese older adults. METHODS A total of 3253 participants aged ≥60 years from the Guangzhou Heart Study were successfully followed between March 2018 and September 2019. LTPA was assessed using a modified Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. AF was ascertained by 12-lead electrocardiograms, 24-hour single-lead Holter and clinical examination. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to the estimate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) after adjustment for confounders, and the population-attributable fraction (PAF) was estimated. RESULTS A total of 76 (2.34%) new-onset cases of AF were identified during a median of 31.13 months of follow-up. After adjustment for confounders, subjects who had LTPA at least 10.0 metabolic equivalent (MET)-hours/week had a 55% lower risk of developing AF (HR: 0.45, 95%CI: 0.25-0.81), and at least 20 MET-hours/week reduced the risk by 45% (HR: 0.55, 95%CI: 0.34-0.92). At least 11% (PAF: 11%, 95%CI: 0%-20%) or 14% (PAF: 14%, 95%CI: 0%-26%) of AF cases could be avoided, respectively, if the subjects do LTPA at least 10 MET-hours/week or 20 MET-hours/week. A significant exposure-response trend was also observed between LTPA and AF risk (Plinear-trend = 0.002). For a specific LTPA, doing housework was associated with a 43% reduced risk, while engaging in ball games was associated with an increased risk. CONCLUSION This prospective cohort study indicated that a higher LTPA volume was associated with a lower AF risk in Chinese older adults.

Abstract
Green space exposure has been inversely associated with blood pressure (BP) levels and hypertension risk. However, empirical evidence on the underlying mechanisms are lacking. This study examined the association of green space exposure with BP and hypertension, and assessed the mediating effects by air pollution, mental health, physical activity, and weight status. Survey data from 719 adults, who lived in Guangzhou (China) in 2016, were used. Three area-level green space indicators, including network distance to the nearest park, percentage of green space and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index within a 1km Euclidean buffer around residence and workplace, were calculated and linked to individual-level BP measurements. Structural equation models were applied to estimate the direct and indirect associations of the various green space indicators on systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and hypertension, respectively. After adjusting for multiple covariates, longer network distance to green space was directly associated with higher SBP. Compared to the reference group (0-500m), the differences were 0.11 mmHg (95% CI=0.03 to 0.19, P=0.006) for 500-1000m, 0.03 mmHg (95% CI=-0.05 to 0.12, P=0.45) for 1000-1500m, and 0.16 mmHg (95% CI=0.09 to 0.23, P<0.001) for >1500m, respectively. The overall and direct associations were significant for all three indicators (distance or density) with or without considering workplace exposure. The association between network distance to green and SBP was partially (18.4%, 95% CI=0 to 42.1%) mediated by mental health. There was no statistical evidence that air pollution, physical activity, or weight status mediate the association. Secondary analyses for other indicators and other outcomes showed similar results. Both distance to green space and more green space around residence and workplace were associated with lower BP and lower risk of hypertension in adults living in a Chinese metropolitan. Mental health partly mediated the association.

Abstract
Few studies have investigated the association of residential greenness with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study was to comprehensively examine the association of residential greenness exposure with OSA and explore the mediating effect of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and PM2.5 on the association among Chinese old adults. A prospective cohort study that enrolled 2027 adults aged ≥65 was conducted between 1st July 2015 and 30th September 2019 in Southern China. OSA was ascertained by Berlin Questionnaire. Greenness exposure was measured by contemporaneous and cumulative average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the 1000 m radius around each participant's residential address. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by Cox proportional hazards model to assess the impact of greenness exposure on the incidence of OSA after adjusting for confounders. LTPA and PM2.5 were examined as potential mediators in the aforementioned models. A total of 293, nearly 14.5 %, participants developed OSA within 59,251 person-months of follow-up. When comparing the highest with lowest tertiles, both contemporaneous NDVI (>0.351 vs. ≤0.325: HR = 0.20, 95 % CI = 0.13-0.31) and cumulative NDVI (> 0.346 vs. ≤ 0.317: HR = 0.32, 95 % CI = 0.21-0.47) were associated with a reduced risk of OSA after adjusting for confounders. LTPA and PM2.5 significantly mediated the association between greenness and OSA. In conclusion, this study indicated that exposure to higher residential greenness could decrease OSA risk, and this benefit may be achieved by promoting physical activity and decreasing PM2.5 concentration. The findings suggest to formulate targeted interventional strategies by expanding residential greenness to prevent OSA and reduce disease burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the world's population steadily shifting toward urban living, children's engagement with the natural environment seems to be diminishing. This raises significant concerns about the influence of urban greenspaces on the cardiovascular health of children. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between urban greenspaces exposure and blood pressure (BP) in Chinese primary schoolchildren. METHODS This prospective cohort study used data from the Children's growth environment, lifestyle, physical, and mental health development (COHERENCE) project in Guangzhou, China. Participants included 164,853 primary schoolchildren starting from 2016/17 to 2019/20 academic year. We assessed the surrounding greenspaces at home and school by using Sentinel-2 satellite data on the normalized difference vegetation index. Prehypertension and hypertension status were defined with BP above 90th to less than the 95th percentile, at or above the 95th percentile, respectively. The association of surrounding greenness with children's BP levels and risk of prehypertension/hypertension were examined using linear mixed-effects models and Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS Among 164,853 eligible children aged 7.21 (0.74) years, 89,190 (54.1%) were boys. Our results showed that average systolic and diastolic BP increased by 0.48 and 0.42 standard deviations, respectively, over the 3-year follow-up. We identified 23,225 new cases of prehypertension and 35,067 of hypertension status. An interquartile range increase both in home-, school- and home-school NDVI100m was significantly associated with a reduction of 0.018-0.037 in BP z-scores and a 2.7%-7.6% lower risk of hypertension. Additionally, family socioeconomic status modified the impact of home-school greenness on BP levels. Air pollution exhibited mediating effects solely in school-greenness-BP associations, while physical activity and children's BMI mainly mediated the relationships between home-greenness and BP. CONCLUSION The findings of this large cohort study suggest that surrounding greenspaces are associated with lower BP levels and a decreased risk of prehypertension and hypertension in Chinese schoolchildren.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are few studies on the health effects of long-term exposure to neighborhood greenness in a longitudinal setting, especially in Asian countries with high population densities. OBJECTIVES This study investigates the association between long-term exposure to neighborhood greenness and hypertension among adults in Taiwan. METHODS We selected 125,537 participants (≥ 18 years of age) without hypertension from Taiwan who had joined the standard medical examination program between 2001 and 2016. Neighborhood greenness was estimated using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), derived from satellite images at a resolution of 250 m 2 . The 2-y average NDVI value within a 500 -m circular buffer around participants' residences was calculated. A time-varying Cox regression model was used to investigate the association between neighborhood greenness and incident hypertension. Mediation analyses were performed to examine whether the association was explained by air pollution, leisure-time physical exercise, or body mass index (BMI). RESULTS Compared with living in areas within the first quartile of neighborhood greenness, living in areas within the second, third, and fourth quartiles of neighborhood greenness was found to be associated with a lower risk of hypertension, with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.91, 1.00), 0.95 (95% CI: 0.90, 0.99), and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88, 0.97), respectively. Each 0.1-unit increase in the NDVI was associated with a 24% lower risk of developing hypertension (HR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.87), with this associations being stronger among males and those with higher education levels. This association was slightly mediated by BMI but not by air pollution or leisure-time physical exercise. DISCUSSION Our findings suggest the protective effects of neighborhood greenness on hypertension development, especially in males and well-educated individuals. Abstract
The Annual Report on Cardiovascular Health and Diseases in China (2022) intricate landscape of cardiovascular health in China. This section dissects cardiovascular risk factors in China which including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, metabolic syndrome and air pollution. Hypertension prevalence has steadily increased in China, with efforts to control it facing challenges in achieving optimal rates, especially in rural areas. Interventions like salt substitutes and intensive blood pressure control show promise but need improvement. Abnormal lipid levels, indicative of dyslipidemia, have risen significantly, posing a risk for cardiovascular diseases. Despite efforts, many patients struggle to achieve target lipid levels, necessitating improved treatment strategies. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus affect millions of adults in China, with long-term complications adding to the disease burden. Early intervention and effective management are crucial to mitigate its impact. Prevalent among older adults, chronic kidney disease is associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, necessitating comprehensive management approaches. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of risk factors, has increased in both adults and adolescents, calling for lifestyle modifications and public health interventions. Ambient and household air pollution remain significant environmental risk factors, despite some improvements in air quality. Continued efforts to reduce emissions are essential for mitigating associated health risks. Addressing these risk factors requires a multifaceted approach, including public health initiatives, policy interventions, and individual-level strategies to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce environmental exposures. Surveillance and research efforts are crucial for monitoring trends and developing effective strategies to lessen the burden of cardiovascular diseases in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that maternal exposure to heat might increase the risk of preterm birth (PTB), but no study has investigated the effect from urban heat island (UHI) at individual level. AIMS Our study aimed to investigate the association between individual UHI exposure and PTB. METHODS We utilized data from the ongoing China Birth Cohort Study (CBCS), encompassing 103,040 birth records up to December 2020. UHI exposure was estimated for each participant using a novel individual assessment method based on temperature data and satellite-derived land cover data. We used generalized linear mixed-effects models to estimate the association between UHI exposure and PTB, adjusting for potential confounders including maternal characteristics and environmental factors. RESULTS Consistent and statistically significant associations between UHI exposure and PTB were observed up to 21 days before birth. A 5 °C increment in UHI exposure was associated with 27 % higher risk (OR = 1.27, 95 % confident interval: 1.20, 1.34) of preterm birth in lagged day 1. Stratified analysis indicated that the associations were more pronounced in participants who were older, had higher pre-pregnancy body mass index level, of higher socioeconomic status and living in greener areas. CONCLUSION Maternal exposure to UHI was associated with increased risk of PTB. These findings have implications for developing targeted interventions for susceptible subgroups of pregnant women. More research is needed to validate our findings of increased risk of preterm birth due to UHI exposure among pregnant women.

Abstract
Association of greenness surrounding school with aggression among adolescents was not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the associations of greenness surrounding school with adolescents' total and sub-types of aggression and explore potential mediators underlying these associations. A multi-site study of 15,301 adolescents aged 11-20 years were recruited through a multistage, random cluster sampling across 5 representative provinces in mainland China. Satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values within circular buffers of 100 m, 500 m, and 1000 m surrounding school were used to indicate the adolescents' greenness exposure. We used the Chinese version of Buss and Warren's Aggression Questionnaire to assess total and sub-types of aggression. Daily concentrations of PM2.5, and NO2 were obtained from the China High Air Pollutants datasets. Per IQR increment of NDVI 100 m and 500 m surrounding school was associated with lower odds of total aggression; odds ratio [OR] with 95% CI was 0.958 (0.926-0.990) for the 100 m buffer and 0.963 (0.932-0.996) for the 500 m buffer, respectively. Similar associations can be observed in two sub-types of aggression, including verbal (NDVI 100 m: 0.960 (0.925-0.995); NDVI500m: 0.964 (0.930-0.999)) and indirect aggression (NDVI 100 m: 0.956 (0.924-0.990); NDVI500m: 0.953 (0.921-0.986)). There were no sex and age differences in the associations of school surrounding greenness with aggression, except that the beneficial associations of greenness exposure with total aggression (0.933(0.895-0.975) vs.1.005(0.956-1.056)), physical aggression (0.971(0.925-1.019) vs.1.098(1.043-1.156)), and hostility (0.942(0.901-0.986) vs.1.016(0.965-1.069)) were greater among participants aged ≥16 years than those aged<16 years. PM2.5 (proportion mediated estimates: 0.21; 95% CI: 0.08, 0.94) and NO2 (-0.78, 95% CI: -3.22, -0.37) mediated the association of NDVI 500 m surrounding school with total aggression. Our data indicated that exposure to greenness in school surroundings was associated with reduced aggression, particularly in verbal and indirect aggression. The presence of PM2.5 and NO2 partially mediated these associations.

Abstract
Limited evidence exists regarding the association between ambient temperature and blood pressure (BP) level of pregnant women. To investigate the associations of ambient temperature with maternal BP and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), we studied 105,063 participants in 38 centers of 17 provinces from November 2017 to December 2021. BP was measured with standardized automated digital sphygmomanometers. Ambient temperature was classified into five classes as very hot, moderate hot, mild, moderate cold, and very cold. Generalized linear mixed models were used to investigate the ambient temperature-BP/HDP associations, controlling for multiple covariates. No significant associations of first-trimester ambient temperature with maternal BP and HDP prevalence were observed. Compared with mild temperature, second-trimester very cold and second-trimester moderate cold were statistically associated with the increase of 1.239 mmHg (95% CI: 0.908, 1.569) and 0.428 mmHg (95% CI: 0.099, 0.757) for second-trimester systolic blood pressure (SBP), respectively. Similar trends were also observed in the association between second-trimester cold exposure and second-trimester diastolic blood pressure (DBP), in the association between second-trimester cold exposure and third-trimester SBP/DBP as well as in the association between third-trimester cold exposure and third-trimester SBP/DBP although some estimates were not statistically significant. Furthermore, in the second and third trimester, very cold [second trimester: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.298; third trimester: aOR = 1.236) and moderate cold (second trimester: aOR = 1.208; third trimester: aOR = 1.146) exposures also increased the odds of HDP, and these associations were stronger among participants aged ≥35 years or from North China. The second and third trimesters are the critical exposure windows for ambient temperature exposure-BP/HDP associations. During this period, exposure to cold ambient temperature was associated with elevated BP as well as increased HDP prevalence among most Chinese pregnant women, those aged ≥35 years or from North China being more vulnerable.

Abstract
As the world's population becomes increasingly urbanized, there is growing concern about the impact of urban environments on cardiovascular health. Urban residents are exposed to a variety of adverse environmental exposures throughout their lives, including air pollution, built environment, and lack of green space, which may contribute to the development of early cardiovascular disease and related risk factors. While epidemiological studies have examined the role of a few environmental factors with early cardiovascular disease, the relationship with the broader environment remains poorly defined. In this article, we provide a brief overview of studies that have examined the impact of the environment including the built physical environment, discuss current challenges in the field, and suggest potential directions for future research. Additionally, we highlight the clinical implications of these findings and propose multilevel interventions to promote cardiovascular health among children and young adults.

Abstract
Introduction We aimed to investigate the association between greenness around schools, long-term gaseous air pollution exposure (SO2 and CO), and blood pressure in children and adolescents. Methods From 2006 to 2018, a total of 219,956 Chinese children and adolescents aged 7-17 years in Beijing and Zhongshan were included in this longitudinal study. Annual average concentrations of SO2 and CO and the mean values of normalized difference vegetation index around schools were calculated. We used the generalized estimation equation model, restricted cubic spline model, and Cox model to analyze the health effects. Results Among all the subjects, 52,515 had the first onset of HBP. During the follow-up, HBP's cumulative incidence and incidence density were 23.88% and 7.72 per 100 person-year respectively. Exposures to SO2 and CO were significantly associated with SBP [β = 1.30, 95% CI: (1.26, 1.34) and 0.78 (0.75, 0.81)], DBP [β = 0.81 (0.79, 0.84) and 0.46 (0.44, 0.48)] and HBP [HR = 1.58 (1.57, 1.60) and 1.42 (1.41, 1.43)]. The risks of HBP attributed to SO2 and CO pollution would be higher in school-aged children in the low greenness group: the attributable fractions (AFs) were 26.31% and 20.04%, but only 13.90% and 17.81% in the higher greenness group. The AFs were also higher for normal-BMI children and adolescents in the low greenness group (AFs = 30.90% and 22.64%, but 14.41% and 18.65% in the high greenness group), while the AFs were not as high as expected for obese children in the low greenness group (AFs = 10.64% and 8.61%), nor was it significantly lower in the high greenness group (AFs = 9.60% and 10.72%). Discussion Greenness could alleviate the damage effects of SO2/CO exposure on the risks of HBP among children and adolescents, and the benefit is BMI sensitivity. It might offer insights for policymakers in making effective official interventions to prevent and control the prevalence of childhood HBP and the future disease burden caused by air pollution.

Abstract
This assessment by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) of the Montreal Protocol under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) evaluates the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on human health within the context of the Montreal Protocol and its Amendments. We assess work published since our last comprehensive assessment in 2018. Over the last four years gains have been made in knowledge of the links between sun exposure and health outcomes, mechanisms, and estimates of disease burden, including economic impacts. Of particular note, there is new information about the way in which exposure to UV radiation modulates the immune system, causing both harms and benefits for health. The burden of skin cancer remains high, with many lives lost to melanoma and many more people treated for keratinocyte cancer, but it has been estimated that the Montreal Protocol will prevent 11 million cases of melanoma and 432 million cases of keratinocyte cancer that would otherwise have occurred in the United States in people born between 1890 and 2100. While the incidence of skin cancer continues to rise, rates have stabilised in younger populations in some countries. Mortality has also plateaued, partly due to the use of systemic therapies for advanced disease. However, these therapies are very expensive, contributing to the extremely high economic burden of skin cancer, and emphasising the importance and comparative cost-effectiveness of prevention. Photodermatoses, inflammatory skin conditions induced by exposure to UV radiation, can have a marked detrimental impact on the quality of life of sufferers. More information is emerging about their potential link with commonly used drugs, particularly anti-hypertensives. The eyes are also harmed by over-exposure to UV radiation. The incidence of cataract and pterygium is continuing to rise, and there is now evidence of a link between intraocular melanoma and sun exposure. It has been estimated that the Montreal Protocol will prevent 63 million cases of cataract that would otherwise have occurred in the United States in people born between 1890 and 2100. Despite the clearly established harms, exposure to UV radiation also has benefits for human health. While the best recognised benefit is production of vitamin D, beneficial effects mediated by factors other than vitamin D are emerging. For both sun exposure and vitamin D, there is increasingly convincing evidence of a positive role in diseases related to immune function, including both autoimmune diseases and infection. With its influence on the intensity of UV radiation and global warming, the Montreal Protocol has, and will have, both direct and indirect effects on human health, potentially changing the balance of the risks and benefits of spending time outdoors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have demonstrated that greenspace(GS) exposure is associated with health improvements in individuals with hypertension and diabetes. However, studies examining the associations between multiple GS exposures and chronic health conditions in developing countries are limited. METHODS Geospatial data and spatial analysis were employed to objectively measure the total neighbourhood vegetative cover (mean value of normalised difference vegetation index [NDVI] within specific buffer zone) and proximity to park-based GS (network distance from home to the entrance of park-based GS). Street view imagery and machine learning techniques were used to measure the subjective perceptions of street GS quality. A multiple linear regression model was applied to examine the associations between multiple GS exposures and the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in neighbourhoods located in Qingdao, China. RESULTS The model explained 29.8% and 28.2% of the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, respectively. The results suggested that: 1) the total vegetative cover of the neighbourhood was inversely correlated with the prevalence of hypertension (β = -0.272, p = 0.013, 95% confidence interval (CI): [-1.332, -0.162]) and diabetes (β = -0.230, p = 0.037, 95% CI: [-0.720, -0.008]). 2) The street GS quality was negatively correlated with the prevalence of hypertension (β = -0.303, p = 0.007, 95% CI: [-2.981, -0.491]) and diabetes (β = -0.309, p = 0.006, 95% CI: [-1.839, -0.314]). 3) Proximity to park-based GS and the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were not significantly correlated. CONCLUSIONS This study used subjective and objective methods to comprehensively assess the greenspace exposure from overhead to eye level, from quantity, proximity to quality. The results demonstrated the beneficial relationships between street GS quality, total vegetative cover, and chronic health in a rapidly urbanising Chinese city. Furthermore. the effect of street GS quality was more pronounced in potentially mitigating chronic health problems, and improving the quality of street GS might be an efficient and effective intervention pathway for addressing chronic health issues in densely populated cities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk of cardiovascular diseases may be reduced by residing in green environments. However, there are relatively few longitudinal cohort studies, especially in Southeast Asia, that focused on the health benefits of long-term greenness exposure in young adults. The present study examined the association between long-term exposure to residential greenness and self-reported morbidities in participants of the Thai Cohort Study (TCS) in Thailand from 2005 to 2013. METHODS The self-reported outcomes, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes, were reported in 2005, 2009, and 2013, where the study participants provided the exact year of disease occurrence. Greenness was assessed by the satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), with a spatial resolution of 250 m. Long-term exposure to NDVI and EVI of each participant's sub-district was averaged over the period of person-time. We used Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between greenness and health outcomes. Associations with self-reported morbidity were measured using hazard ratios (HRs) per interquartile range (IQR) increase in NDVI and EVI. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, we observed that an IQR increase in NDVI was associated with lower incidence of high blood pressure (HR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.89, 0.97) and high blood cholesterol (HR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.87, 0.92), but not significantly associated with diabetes (HR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.85, 1.01). EVI was also inversely associated with self-reported high blood pressure (HR = 0.92, 95%CI: 0.88, 0.96), high blood cholesterol (HR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.87, 0.91), and diabetes (HR = 0.92, 95%CI: 0.85, 0.99). CONCLUSIONS Long-term exposure to residential greenness was inversely associated with self-reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes in participants of TCS. Our study provides evidence that greenness exposure may reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors in adult population.

Abstract
Background Structured life course modelling approaches (SLCMA) have been developed to understand how exposures across the lifespan relate to later health, but have primarily been restricted to single exposures. As multiple exposures can jointly impact health, here we: i) demonstrate how to extend SLCMA to include exposure interactions; ii) conduct a simulation study investigating the performance of these methods; and iii) apply these methods to explore associations of access to green space, and its interaction with socioeconomic position, with child cardiometabolic health. Methods We used three methods, all based on lasso regression, to select the most plausible life course model: visual inspection, information criteria and cross-validation. The simulation study assessed the ability of these approaches to detect the correct interaction term, while varying parameters which may impact power (e.g., interaction magnitude, sample size, exposure collinearity). Methods were then applied to data from a UK birth cohort. Results There were trade-offs between false negatives and false positives in detecting the true interaction term for different model selection methods. Larger sample size, lower exposure collinearity, centering exposures, continuous outcomes and a larger interaction effect all increased power. In our applied example we found little-to-no association between access to green space, or its interaction with socioeconomic position, and child cardiometabolic outcomes. Conclusions Incorporating interactions between multiple exposures is an important extension to SLCMA. The choice of method depends on the researchers' assessment of the risks of under- vs over-fitting. These results also provide guidance for improving power to detect interactions using these methods.
