The suspension stability of nanoplastics in aquatic environments revealed using meta-analysis and machine learning

Nanoplastics (NPs) aggregation determines their bioavailability and risks in natural aquatic environments, which is driven by multiple environmental and polymer factors. The back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) model in machine learning (R2 = 0.814) can fit the complex NPs aggregation, and the feature importance was in the order of surface charge of NPs > dissolved organic matter (DOM) > functional group of NPs > ionic strength and pH > concentration of NPs. Meta-analysis results specified low surface charge (0 ≤ |ζ| < 10 mV) of NPs, low concentration (< 1 mg/L) and low molecular weight (< 10 kg/mol) of DOM, NPs with amino groups, high ionic strength (IS > 700 mM) and acidic solution, and high concentration (≥ 20 mg/L) of NPs with smaller size (< 100 nm) contribute to NPs aggregation, which is consistent with the prediction in machine learning. Feature interaction synergistically (e.g., DOM and pH) or antagonistically (e.g., DOM and cation potential) changed NPs aggregation. Therefore, NPs were predicted to aggregate in the dry period and estuary of Poyang Lake. Research on aggregation of NPs with different particle size,shapes, and functional groups, heteroaggregation of NPs with coexisting particles and aging effects should be strengthened in the future. This study supports better assessments of the NPs fate and risks in environments.

Influence of combined abiotic/biotic factors on decay of P. aeruginosa and E. coli in Rhine River water

Understanding the dynamic change in abundance of both fecal and opportunistic waterborne pathogens in urban surface water under different abiotic and biotic factors helps the prediction of microbiological water quality and protection of public health during recreational activities, such as swimming. However, a comprehensive understanding of the interaction among various factors on pathogen behavior in surface water is missing. In this study, the effect of salinity, light, and temperature and the presence of indigenous microbiota, on the decay/persistence of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Rhine River water were tested during 7 days of incubation with varying salinity (0.4, 5.4, 9.4, and 15.4 ppt), with light under a light/dark regime (light/dark) and without light (dark), temperature (3, 12, and 20 °C), and presence/absence of indigenous microbiota. The results demonstrated that light, indigenous microbiota, and temperature significantly impacted the decay of E. coli. Moreover, a significant (p<0.01) four-factor interactive impact of these four environmental conditions on E. coli decay was observed. However, for P. aeruginosa, temperature and indigenous microbiota were two determinate factors on the decay or growth. A significant three-factor interactive impact between indigenous microbiota, temperature, and salinity (p<0.01); indigenous microbiota, light, and temperature (p<0.01); and light, temperature, and salinity (p<0.05) on the decay of P. aeruginosa was found. Due to these interactive effects, caution should be taken when predicting decay/persistence of E. coli and P. aeruginosa in surface water based on a single environmental condition. In addition, the different response of E. coli and P. aeruginosa to the environmental conditions highlights that E. coli monitoring alone underestimates health risks of surface water by non-fecal opportunistic pathogens, such as P. aeruginosa. The interactive effects of ocean acidification and warming on bioeroding sponge Spheciospongia vesparium microbiome indicated by metatranscriptomics

Global climate change will cause coral reefs decline and is expected to increase the reef erosion potential of bioeroding sponges. Microbial symbionts are essential for the overall fitness and survival of sponge holobionts in changing ocean environments. However, we rarely know about the impacts of ocean warming and acidification on bioeroding sponge microbiome. Here, the structural and functional changes of the bioeroding sponge Spheciospongia vesparium microbiome, as well as its recovery potential, were investigated at the RNA level in a laboratory system simulating 32 °C and pH 7.7. Based on metatranscriptome analysis, acidification showed no significant impact, while warming or simultaneous warming and acidification disrupted the sponge microbiome. Warming caused microbial dysbiosis and recruited potentially opportunistic and pathogenic members of Nesiotobacter, Oceanospirillaceae, Deltaproteobacteria, Epsilonproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Moreover, warming disrupted nutrient exchange and molecular interactions in the sponge holobiont, accompanied by stimulation of virulence activity and anaerobic metabolism including denitrification and dissimilatory reduction of nitrate and sulfate to promote sponge necrosis. Particularly, the interaction between acidification and warming alleviated the negative effects of warming and enhanced the Rhodobacteraceae-driven ethylmalonyl-CoA pathway and sulfur-oxidizing multienzyme system. The microbiome could not recover during the experiment period after warming or combined stress was removed. This study suggests that warming or combined warming and acidification will irreversibly destabilize the S. vesparium microbial community structure and function, and provides insight into the molecular mechanisms of the interactive effects of acidification and warming on the sponge microbiome.

Size- and surface charge-dependent hormetic effects of microplastics on bacterial resistance and their interactive effects with quinolone antibiotic

The facilitation of microplastics (MPs) on bacterial resistance has attracted wide concern, due to the widespread presence of MPs in environmental media and their ubiquitous contact with bacteria strains. Furthermore, MPs possibly co-exist with antibiotics to trigger combined stress on bacterial survival. Therefore, it is significant to reveal the dose-responses of MPs and MP-antibiotic mixtures on bacterial endogenous and exogenous resistance. In this study, 0.1 and 5 μm polystyrenes with no surface functionalization (PS-NF, no charge), surface functionalized with amino groups (PS-NH2, positive charge) and carboxyl groups (PS-COOH, negative charge) were selected as the test MPs, and norfloxacin (NOR) was set as the representative of antibiotics. It was found that six types of PS all inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) but induced hormetic dose-responses on the mutation frequency (MF) and conjugative transfer frequency (CTF) of RP4 plasmid in E. coli. Moreover, these hormetic effects exhibited size- and surface charge-dependent features, where 0.1 μm PS-NH2 (100 mg/L) triggered the maximum stimulatory rates on MF (363.63 %) and CTF (74.80 %). The hormetic phenomena of MF and CTF were also observed in the treatments of PS-NOR mixtures, which varied with the particle size and surface charge of PS. In addition, the interactive effects between PS and NOR indicated that the co-existence of PS and NOR might trigger greater resistance risk than the single pollutants. Mechanistic exploration demonstrated that the increase of cellular reactive oxygen species and the variation of cell membrane permeability participated in the hormetic effects of PS and PS-NOR mixtures on bacterial resistance. This study provides new insights into the individual effects of MPs and the combined effects of MP-antibiotic mixtures on bacterial resistance, which will promote the development of environmental risk assessment of MPs from the perspective of bacterial resistance.

Co-application of biochar and organic amendments on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A meta-analysis

Biochar has been shown to reduce soil greenhouse gas (GHG) and increase nutrient retention in soil; however, the interaction between biochar and organic amendments on GHG emissions remain largely unclear. In this study, we collected 162 two-factor observations to explore how biochar and organic amendments jointly affect soil GHG emissions. Our results showed that biochar addition significantly increased soil CO2 emission by 8.62 %, but reduced CH4 and N2O emissions by 27.0 % and 23.9 %, respectively. Meanwhile, organic amendments and the co-application with biochar resulted in an increase of global warming potential based on the 100-year time horizon (GWP100) by an average of 18.3 % and 26.1 %. More importantly, the interactive effect of biochar and organic amendments on CO2 emission was antagonistic (the combined effect was weaker than the sum of their individual effects), while additive on CH4 and N2O emissions. Additionally, our results suggested that when biochar is co-applied with organic amendments, soil GHG emissions were largely influenced by soil initial total carbon, soil texture, and biochar feedstocks. Our work highlights the important interactive effects of biochar and organic amendments on soil GHG emissions, and provides new insights for promoting ecosystem sustainability as well as mitigating future climate change.

Sex-specific interactive effect of melamine and DEHP on a marker of early kidney damage in Taiwanese adults: A national population-based study from the Taiwan Biobank

Taiwan had the high incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. Our objective was to examine associations between daily exposure of phthalates and melamine, two common nephrotoxins, and kidney damage risk in a well-established nationwide cohort. Study subjects were from Taiwan Biobank (TWB) with existing data of questionnaire and biochemical examinations. Average daily intake (ADI) levels of melamine and seven parental phthalates, including DEHP (di-2-ethylhexylphthalate), DiBP (Dibutyl phthalate), DnBP (Di-n-butyl phthalate), BBzP (Butyl benzyl phthalate), DEP (Diethyl phthalate), and DMP (Dimethyl phthalate) were estimated using a creatinine excretion-based model from urine melamine and 10 phthalate metabolites. Urine microalbumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) was used to represent for the outcome of kidney damage. Two statistical strategies were used: First, a weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model to select the most important exposure variables of ADI levels of phthalates and melamine associated with ACR; Second, to examine effects of those most important exposure variables on ACR in multivariable linear regression models. In total, 1153 eligible adults were left for analyses. Of them, 591 (51.3%) and 562 (48.7%) were men and women, respectively, with a median age of 49 years old. By WQS, a significant and positive association was found between ADI of melamine and phthalates and ACR (β = 0.14, p = 0.002). ADI levels of melamine had the highest weight (0.57), followed by DEHP (0.13). Next, examining the two most important exposures in association with ACR, we found that the higher the melamine and DEHP intakes, the higher the ACR levels were found. An interaction effect was also found between melamine and DEHP intakes on urine ACR (p = 0.015). This result was more prominent in men (p = 0.008) than in women (p = 0.651). Environmental co-exposure of melamine and DEHP can potentially affect ACR in the community-dwelling Taiwanese adult population.

A multiscale analysis of the spatially heterogeneous relationships between non-point source pollution-related processes and their main drivers in Chaohu Lake watershed, China

A better understanding of the relationships between non-point source (NPS) pollution-related processes and their drivers will help to develop scientific watershed management measures. Although various studies have explored the drivers' impact on NPS pollution-related processes, quantitative knowledge of the properties within these relationships is still needed. This study uses the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model to produce three related processes of NPS pollution, quick flow (QF), nitrogen export (NE), and sediment export (SE), in the upstream watershed of Chaohu Lake, China. The spatial distributions of QF, NE, and SE and their responses to multiple natural-socioeconomic drivers at nine spatial scales (1 km2, 10 km2, 20 km2, 30 km2, 50 km2, 75 km2, 100 km2, 200 km2, and town) were compared. The results showed that the spatial scale has little impact on the spatial distributions of NPS pollution-related processes. Across the nine scales, the socioeconomic drivers related to agricultural activities, area proportions of cultivated land (cultivated) and paddy field (paddy), have dominant impacts on NE, while the topographical drivers, the connectivity index (IC) and slope, have dominant impacts on both SE and QF. The magnitudes of single and paired natural-socioeconomic drivers' impacts on NPS pollution-related processes increase logarithmically or linearly with increasing spatial scale, but they tend to reach a stable threshold at a certain coarse scale. Our results emphasized the necessity and importance of embracing spatial scale effects in watershed water environmental management.

Interactive effect of increased high sensitive C-reactive protein and dyslipidemia on cardiovascular diseases: a 12-year prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Dyslipidemia and inflammation are significant factors for the onset of cardiovascular diseases (CVD); however, studies regarding their interactions on the risk of CVD are scarce. This study aimed to assess the interaction of dyslipidemia and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on CVD.

METHODS

This prospective cohort enrolled 4,128 adults at baseline in 2009 and followed them up until May 2022 for collecting CVD events. Cox-proportional hazard regression analysis estimated the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the associations of increased hs-CRP (≥ 1 mg/L) and dyslipidemia with CVD. The additive interactions were explored using the relative excess risk of interaction (RERI) and the multiplicative interactions were assessed with HRs (95% CI) while the multiplicative interactions were assessed by the HRs (95% CI) of interaction terms.

RESULTS

The HRs of the association between increased hs-CRP and CVD were 1.42 (95% CI: 1.14-1.79) and 1.17 (95% CI: 0.89-1.53) among subjects with normal lipid levels and subjects with dyslipidemia, respectively. Stratified analyses by hs-CRP levels showed that among participants with normal hs-CRP (< 1 mg/L), TC ≥ 240 mg/dL, LDL-C ≥ 160 mg/dL, non-HDL-C ≥ 190 mg/dL, ApoB < 0.7 g/L, and LDL/HDL-C ≥ 2.02 were associated with CVD [HRs (95%CIs): 1.75 (1.21-2.54), 2.16 (1.37-3.41), 1.95 (1.29-2.97), 1.37 (1.01-1.67), and 1.30 (1.00-1.69), all P < 0.05, respectively]. While in the population with increased hs-CRP, only ApoAI > 2.10 g/L had a significant association with CVD [HR (95% CI): 1.69 (1.14-2.51)]. Interaction analyses showed that increased hs-CRP had multiplicative and additive interactions with LDL-C ≥ 160 mg/dL and non-HDL-C ≥ 190 mg/dL on the risk of CVD [HRs (95%CIs): 0.309 (0.153-0.621), and 0.505 (0.295-0.866); RERIs (95%CIs): -1.704 (-3.430-0.021 and - 0.694 (-1.476-0.089), respectively, all P < 0.05].

CONCLUSION

Overall our findings indicate negative interactions between abnormal blood lipid levels and hs-CRP on the risk of CVD. Further large-scale cohort studies with trajectories measurement of lipids and hs-CRP might verify our results as well explore the biological mechanism behind that interaction.

The effect of the elderly and child care on household carbon emissions

The aim of this work is to investigate the different implications in terms of the elderly and child care on household carbon emissions in China. We estimate the effect of family structure on household carbon emissions in the 2018 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), by means of the STIRPAT model. The results indicate that significant differences exist between the effect of the elderly and child care on each household's carbon emissions. Moreover, there is a negative effect between the elderly and household carbon emissions with an elasticity coefficient of -0.029, and a positive effect between children and household carbon emissions with an elasticity coefficient of 0.008. Interestingly, the elderly and children have an interactive effect on carbon emissions except for housing carbon emissions. To be specific, the elderly and child care have a mutual inhibition effect on the health carbon emissions of household, whereas they have a mutually reinforcing effect on other carbon emissions. Low carbon emissions paths in household should be urgently explored, and deliberate policy action is required to achieve carbon emissions reduction.

The impacts of ocean acidification, warming and their interactive effects on coral prokaryotic symbionts

BACKGROUND

Reef-building corals, the foundation of tropical coral reefs, are vulnerable to climate change e.g. ocean acidification and elevated seawater temperature. Coral microbiome plays a key role in host acclimatization and maintenance of the coral holobiont's homeostasis under different environmental conditions, however, the response patterns of coral prokaryotic symbionts to ocean acidification and/or warming are rarely known at the metatranscriptional level, particularly the knowledge of interactive and persistent effects is limited. Using branching Acropora valida and massive Galaxea fascicularis as models in a lab system simulating extreme ocean acidification (pH 7.7) and/or warming (32 °C) in the future, we investigated the changes of in situ active prokaryotic symbionts community and gene expression of corals under/after (6/9 d) acidification (A), warming (H) and acidification-warming (AH) by metatranscriptome analysis with pH8.1, 26 °C as the control.

RESULTS

A, H and AH increased the relative abundance of in situ active pathogenic bacteria. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in virulence, stress resistance, and heat shock proteins were up-regulated. Many DEGs involved in photosynthesis, carbon dioxide fixation, amino acids, cofactors and vitamins, auxin synthesis were down-regulated. A broad array of new DEGs involved in carbohydrate metabolism and energy production emerged after the stress treatment. Different response patterns of prokaryotic symbionts of massive G. fascicularis and branching A. valida were suggested, as well as the interactive effects of combined AH and persistent effects.

CONCLUSIONS

The metatranscriptome-based study indicates that acidification and/or warming might change coral's in situ active prokaryotic microbial diversity and functional gene expression towards more pathogenic and destabilized coral-microbes symbioses, particularly combined acidification and warming show interactive effects. These findings will aid in comprehension of the coral holobiont's ability for acclimatization under future climate change.

Does physical activity attenuate the association between ambient PM2.5 and physical function?

BACKGROUND

Physical function (PF), such as muscle strength, performing daily activities, has gradually declined with the increase of age, causing the occurrence of disability and diseases burden. Air pollution exposure and physical activity (PA) were both linked to PF. We aimed to explore the individual and joint effects of particulate matter <2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and PA on PF.

METHODS

A total of 4537 participants and 12,011 observations aged ≥45 years old from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) cohort from 2011 to 2015 were included into the study. PF was assessed by a combined score of four tests, including grip strength, walking speed, sense of balance, and chair standing tests. Air pollution exposure data was from The ChinaHighAirPollutants (CHAP) dataset. The annual PM_2.5 exposure for each individual was estimated based on county-level resident addresses. We estimated the volume of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) by quoting metabolic equivalent (MET). Multivariate linear model was conducted for baseline analysis, and linear mixed model with random participant intercepts was constructed for cohort longitudinal analysis.

RESULTS

PM_2.5 was negatively associated with PF, while PA was positively associated with PF in baseline analysis. In cohort longitudinal analysis, a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 was associated to a 0.025 point (95 % CI: -0.047, -0.003) decrease in PF score, and a 10-MET-h/week increase in PA was related to a 0.004 point (95 % CI: 0.001, 0.008) increase in PF score. The association between PM_2.5 and PF decreased by increased PA intensity, and PA reversed the detrimental effects between PM_2.5 and PF.

CONCLUSION

PA attenuated the association of air pollution with PF at both high and low levels of air pollution, implying that PA may be an effective behavior to reduce the adverse effects of poor air quality on PF.

A factorial-based dynamic distributive model for virtual-water management in multi-urban agglomerations - A case study of Yangtze River Economic Belt

The economic development, population growth and rapid urbanization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) have resulted in an imbalance between socio-economic development and available water resources of adjacent urban agglomerations. Exploring the virtual water flow (VWF) of adjacent urban agglomerations in YREB is crucial for the collaborative management of water resources. In this study, a factorial-based dynamic distributive model (FDDM) is first developed to analyze the variations in virtual water transfers and inter/inner-sectoral relationships within multi-urban agglomerations, and expound the spatiotemporal diffusion effects of multiple water policy alternatives (and their combinations) for virtual water. The FDDM is applied in YREB's urban agglomerations covering Yangtze River Delta (YRDA), Middle Reach of Yangtze River (MRA) and Chengyu Urban Agglomeration (CYA). The FDDM is capable of i) quantifying the dynamic evolution of direct/indirect virtual water volume and virtual water transfer direction/path between and within urban agglomerations; ii) demonstrating the spatiotemporal changes of the control/dependent relationship within sectors in sub-urban agglomerations, as well as the evolution of utility relationship within the system; iii) evaluating the interactions of different water policies (and their combinations) within each sub-urban agglomeration/key sectors on the direct and indirect virtual water consumption of the system. Our major findings are: (i) YRDA always has the largest direct and indirect water consumption as well as the water consumption intensities from 2007 to 2017; (ii) The three national urban agglomerations have evolved in the direction of benign development; (iii) the interactions between YRDA and MRA, YRDA_FLF (sector of farming, forest, livestock, and fishery in YRDA) and MRA_FTO (sector of food and tobacco processing in MRA) on VWF are obvious. These results will provide a new insight for balancing urban agglomeration development and water resource utilization in YREB.

Preliminary study of the interactive effects of coronary heart disease and lacunar infarction on renal function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by gender

BACKGROUND

Coronary heart disease (CHD) and lacunar infarction (LI) are the most common cardio- cerebrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and a recognized risk factor for renal injury. Although a unidirectional association of CHD or LI with T2DM or the kidney has been demonstrated, however, it remains unknown whether there is an interactive effect of the coexistence of CHD and LI on renal function in T2DM patients. The aim of our study was to investigate the interaction between CHD and LI on renal function in gender-specific patients with T2DM and the association between cardio-cerebrovascular disease-related conventional serum markers and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional study in Beijing and Tianjin from April 2019 to August 2021. Participants with T2DM aged ≥18 years were asked to complete a one-to-one questionnaire and physical examination.

RESULTS

In this study, 389 eligible patients with T2DM were included, with a mean age of 63.04 ± 9.41 years, of whom 200 (51.41 %) were male. The proportions of patients with CHD, LI, and both CHD and LI were 28.53 %, 24.42 %, and 11.05 %, respectively. Compared to T2DM patients without either CHD or LI, those with both CHD and LI were found to have a significantly greater risk of reduced eGFR (OR: 12.82, 95 % CI 5.06-32.52, P < 0.001) than those with CHD alone (OR: 2.42, 95 % CI 1.37-3.00, P = 0.004) or LI alone (OR: 1.15, 95 % CI 0.61-2.18, P = 0.664). The combined presence of CHD and LI is associated with a significantly greater risk of decreased eGFR in female T2DM patients compared to their male counterparts. We found both multiplicative and additive effects in all T2DM patients; however, when stratified by sex, only multiplicative effects were observed. After controlling for interference from CHD, LI, and age, we found that total cholesterol (TC) was negatively correlated with eGFR in females (r = -0.156, P = 0.034), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was negatively correlated with eGFR in males (r = -0.229, P = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

This study provides novel evidence that the synergistic effect of CHD and LI on renal injury in patients with T2DM is significantly greater than their individual effects. Women with T2DM who have both CHD and LI are at a 4.85-fold higher risk of decreased eGFR than men. Therefore, increased clinical attention should be given to preventing and treating vascular complications in T2DM patients, as well as aggressively reducing lipid levels, particularly TC and LDL-C, to delay or prevent renal dysfunction in T2DM patients.

Toxicity interaction of polystyrene nanoplastics with sulfamethoxazole on the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii: A closer look at effect of light availability

The coexistence of nanoplastics and antibiotics in the aquatic environment has raised a complicated risk for ecosystems and human health. How the environmental factors e.g., light, regulate the interaction between nanoplastics and antibiotics and the resulting combined toxicity is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the individual and combined toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (nPS, 100 mg L¹) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 2.5 and 10 mg L^-1) toward the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under low (LL, 16 μmol m^-2·s^-1), normal (NL, 40 μmol m^-2·s^-1), and high light (HL, 150 μmol m^-2·s^-1) in terms of cellular responses. Results indicated that the joint toxicity of nPS and SMX commonly exhibited a strong antagonistic/mitigative effect under LL/NL at 24 h, and under NL at 72 h. nPS could adsorb more SMX under LL/NL at 24 h (1.90/1.33 mg g^-1) and under NL at 72 h (1.01 mg g^-1), thereby alleviating SMX toxicity to C. reinhardtii. However, the self-toxicity of nPS had a negative influence on the degree of antagonism between nPS and SMX. The experimental results coupled with computational chemistry further revealed that the adsorption capacity of SMX on nPS was stimulated by low pH under LL/NL at 24 h (∼7.5), while by less co-existing saline ions (0.83 ppt) and algae-derived dissolved organic matter (9.04 mg L^-1) under NL at 72 h. nPS toxicity that was responsible for the toxic action modes was mainly attributed to the shading effect induced by hetero-aggregation and hindrance of light transmittance (>60%), as well as being regulated by additives leaching (0.49-1.07 mg L^-1) and oxidative stress. Overall, these findings provided a critical basis for the risk assessment and management of multiple pollutants in the complex natural environment.

The spatial-temporal pattern of Japanese encephalitis and its influencing factors in Guangxi, China

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a major global public health threat. Using Japanese encephalitis incidence data from 2004 to 2010 in Guangxi Province, China, this study comprehensively explored the driving forces and the interactive effects between environmental and social factors of Japanese encephalitis using the Geo-detector method. The results indicated that the incidence of Japanese encephalitis showed a fluctuating downward trend from 2004 to 2010. The onset of JE was seasonal, mainly concentrated in June-July, and highly aggregated in northwestern Guangxi. Among the factors associated with Japanese encephalitis, days with temperatures >30 °C, accumulated temperatures >25 °C, slope, the normalized difference vegetation index, the gross domestic product of tertiary industries, the gross domestic product of primary industries and the number of pigs slaughtered showed higher contributions to Japanese encephalitis incidence. An enhanced interactive effect was found between environmental and social factors, and the interaction between days with humidity levels >80% and the gross domestic product of tertiary industries had the greatest combined effect on JE. These findings enhanced the understanding of the combined effect of social and environmental factors on the incidence of Japanese encephalitis and could help improve Japanese encephalitis transmission control and prevention strategies.

Association between the Methylation of CpG Islands in JAK-STAT Pathway-Related Genes and Colorectal Cancer

BACKGROUND

Aberrant promoter methylation of CpG islands plays an important role in carcinogenesis. However, the association between the DNA methylation of JAK-STAT pathway-related genes in peripheral blood leukocytes and colorectal cancer (CRC) susceptibility remains unclear.

METHODS

We conducted a case-control study of 403 patients with CRC and 419 cancer free controls, and the DNA methylation levels of JAK2, STAT1, STAT3, and SOCS3 in peripheral blood samples from all subjects were assessed using a methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM) analysis.

RESULTS

Compared with controls, the methylation of the JAK2, STAT1 and SOCS3 genes increased the CRC risk (OR_adjusted=1.96, 95% CI, 1.12-3.41, P=0.01; OR_adjusted=5.37, 95% CI, 3.74-7.71, P<0.01; OR_adjusted=3.30, 95% CI, 1.58-6.87, P<0.01). In the multiple CpG site methylation (MCSM) analysis, a high MCSM value denoted an increased CRC risk (OR_adjusted=4.97, 95% CI, 3.34-7.37, P<0.01).

CONCLUSION

In peripheral blood, the methylation of JAK2, STAT1, and high levels of MCSM are promising biomarkers for CRC risk.

Effects of cadmium and lead co-exposure on glucocorticoid levels in rural residents of northwest China

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are important environmental endocrine disruptors that are associated with adverse health problems. However, the effects of co-exposure to Cd and Pb on glucocorticoids (GCs) in the body at environmental levels are limited. A total of 468 subjects from the Dongdagou-Xinglong cohort (DDG-XL) were included in this study. We measured the serum levels of two representative endogenous GCs [cortisol (CRL) and cortisone (CRN)], and whole blood levels of Cd and Pb. Multiple linear regression models were constructed to explore the associations of single or combined Cd and Pb exposure with serum CRL and CRN levels. The interactive effects of Cd and Pb on GCs were further assessed using mediation analysis and moderation analysis. Single-heavy metal exposure analysis with adjustment for potential confounders showed that the serum CRL level decreased when the blood Cd or Pb concentration gradually increased (P trend <0.01). Additionally, subjects with high Cd or Pb exposure (Q4) had significantly reduced serum CRN levels compared to those with low Cd or Pb exposure (Q1) (P < 0.05). In Cd and Pb co-exposure analysis, significant negative dose-response relationships were observed between co-exposure to Cd and Pb and serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that Cd completely mediated the relationship between Pb and GCs, and moderation analysis suggested that Pb might weaken the negative relationship between Cd and GCs. These findings suggest that single or combined exposure to Cd and Pb interferes with the homeostasis of serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, we innovatively propose that Cd and Pb may have interactive effects on GCs levels, and Pb can antagonize the negative relationship between Cd and GCs, which may provide clues for further studies on endocrine and metabolic disorders related to these heavy metals.

Identifying the critical windows and joint effects of temperature and PM2.5 exposure on small for gestational age

The potential critical windows for extreme ambient temperature, air pollution exposure and small for gestational age (SGA) are still unclear, and no study has explored their joint effects on SGA. In a national multi-center prospective cohort, we included 179,761 pairs of mother-infant from 16 counties of 8 provinces in China during 2014-2018. Daily averaged temperature and PM2.5 concentration were matched to the maternal residential address to estimate personal exposure. Extreme temperature exposures were categorized by a series of percentile in each meteorological and geographic division for the entire pregnancy, each trimester and gestational week (GA-week). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNMs) were used to estimate the whole pregnancy-, trimester-specific, and weekly-specific associations of extreme temperature and PM2.5 exposures with SGA. Combined effects were evaluated with the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and proportion attributable to interaction (AP). We observed that by referring to temperature at the 41st - 50th percentile, heat (>90th percentile) exposure during 13th - 29th GA-weeks was associated with SGA; odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) was 1.16 (1.06, 1.28). For cold (<=10th percentile), inverse associations were observed during the 1st - 8th GA-weeks. PM2.5 exposure during the 2nd - 5th and 19th - 27th GA-weeks was associated with SGA, with the strongest association in the 2nd GA-week (OR = 1.0017, 95 %CI: 1.0001, 1.0034, for a 10 μg/m3 increase). No interactive effects between ambient temperature and PM2.5 on SGA were observed. Our findings suggest the weekly susceptibility windows for heat and PM2.5 exposure were primarily the gestational weeks within the 2nd trimester, therefore, corresponding protective measures should be conveyed to pregnant women during routine prenatal visits to reduce exposures.

High maternal glucose exacerbates the association between prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposure and reduced birth weight

BACKGROUND

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure has been associated with reduced birth weight. However, the association may be complicated by glucose status due to PFAS impact on fetal growth and placental transport.

OBJECTIVES

To examine whether maternal glucose status modifies the association between prenatal PFAS exposure and birth weight z-score.

METHODS

We analyzed data of 1405 mother-child pairs from the prospective Shanghai Birth Cohort. Plasma concentrations of six PFAS were quantified in the first trimester. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was collected at 24-28 gestation weeks. A range of FPG cutoffs (4.9-5.4 mmol/L) covering current recommendations for gestational diabetes mellitus were used to define high and low FPG groups. Association between PFAS concentration and birth weight z-score was evaluated using multivariate linear regression in two FPG groups respectively, and the dose-response relationship was estimated with cutoffs ranging from low to high. We then used propensity score to counterbalance the effects of different PFAS concentrations between the high and low FPG groups, and run the regression again.

RESULTS

A doubling increase in concentrations of several PFAS was inversely associated with birth weight z-score. The association was more evident in high FPG groups and the magnitudes intensified when FPG cutoff increased. The strongest association was observed for PFOA, with the magnitude increased from -0.34 (95 % CI: -0.66, -0.03) for 5.0 mmol/L cutoff, to -0.41 (95 % CI: -0.77, -0.05) for 5.1 mmol/L cutoff, and further to -0.51 (95 % CI: -0.98, -0.03) for 5.3 mmol/L. Propensity score matching yielded similar results.

CONCLUSIONS

High maternal glucose level may increase the risk of reduced birth weight z-score related to prenatal PFAS exposure. Moreover, exploring the effects with different FPG cutoffs may contribute to providing intervention strategies for pregnant women with high PFAS exposure.

The impact of natural environment on human alveolar echinococcosis: A township-level modeling study in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a lethal helminthic infection caused by the tapeworms Echinococcus multilocularis. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has the greatest endemicity of human AE globally, but the natural risk factors and its impact mechanism are still unclear. Generalized linear models and generalized additive models are used to select key linear and non-linear environmental factors associated with cases of AE. The interactive effect between different factors is identified using concurvity test. From fifty-nine variables analyzed, four key factors and one interaction term were identified associated with AE. Considering interaction terms between climatic and geographical landscape factors can significantly improve model fitting. Minimum winter precipitation, percentage of grassland cover, and minimum elevation have significant positive linear relationship with human AE incidence. The relationship between maximum summer precipitation and human AE is non-linear with high AE incidence associated with moderate precipitation. The interaction term of maximum summer precipitation and number of patches of grassland on human AE indicates that human AE incidence is highest when both factors were high. The climatic and landscape risk factors together are associated with the local transmission of human AE in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This study provides a scientific basis for human intervention in AE from fine-scale ecological environment.

Selenite and selenate showed contrasting impacts on the fate of arsenic in rice (Oryza sativa L.) regardless of the formation of iron plaque

The different effects of selenite and selenate on the fate of As and the function of iron plaque in the interaction between Se and As are poorly understood. Rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) were selected as experimental plants in this study, the hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate the possible regulatory roles of selenite and selenate on the uptake, translocation, and transformation of arsenite or arsenate accompanied by iron plaque. In arsenite- and arsenate-treated rice, the Fe30 treatments stimulated root uptake by 12.4-39.8% and 18.6-37.0%, respectively, but inhibited the movement of As from iron plaque to the roots, resulting in the absorption of a considerable amount of As on iron plaque. Regardless of the iron plaque formation, selenite (selenate) significantly increased (decreased) the root uptake of arsenite and arsenate by 28.1-53.0% and 40.0%-61.7%, respectively (45.6-56.3% and 42.5-47.7%, respectively). Interestingly, the supply of selenite significantly reduced root-to-shoot As translocation by 71.9-77.3% and 66.2-67.7%, respectively, in arsenite- and arsenate-treated rice seedlings; however, a significant increase (90.5-122.9%) was induced by selenate was found only in the arsenate-treated plants. Furthermore, the translocation of As from iron plaque to the roots was significantly increased (decreased) by selenite (selenate). As and Fe in iron plaque were significantly positively correlated in all As-treated rice plants, and this correlation was more profound than that in the shoots and roots. However, neither Fe treatments nor inorganic Se addition affected the interconversion between As(III) and As(V) obviously; and As(III) was the dominant species in both shoots (68.3-84.9%) and roots (90.7-98.2%). Our results indicate selenite and selenate are effective in reducing the As accumulation in an opposite way, and the presence of iron plaque had no obvious impact on the interaction between Se and As in rice plants.

Associations of exposure to melamine, cyanuric acid, phthalates with markers of early kidney impairment, and their interactions in US adults: analyses of NHANES 2003-2004 data

Melamine (MEL), cyanuric acid (CYA), and phthalates have kidney toxicity, respectively. Still, no study has explored whether there is an interaction of co-exposure to MEL, CYA, and phthalates on early kidney impairment, including cystatin C (CYST), beta 2-microglobulin (β2-MG), albumin creatinine ratio (ACR), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Urine samples were collected from 333 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2004, and urinary MEL, CYA, and ten metabolites of phthalates were quantified. The multiple markers of early kidney impairment were also measured, including serum CYST, β2-MG, urinary ACR, and eGFR. Their associations were explored by multiple linear and multivariate logistic regression models. Meanwhile, the interactions of co-exposure to MEL, CYA, and phthalates on early kidney impairment were analyzed by Wilcoxon rank-sum test combined with the LSD test. In the multiple linear regression model, urinary concentrations of monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP), mono(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP), mono(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (MECPP), and mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) were positively associated with urinary ACR, serum β2-MG, and CYST, respectively. Urinary concentrations of MBzP and MCPP were negatively associated with eGFR. In the multivariate logistic regression model, increased urinary CYA concentration was the risk factor of CYST abnormality with an odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval, 95% CI) of 2.38 (1.01, 5.60) (P = 0.047) and increased urinary MBzP concentration was the risk factor of ACR abnormality with an OR of 2.59 (1.41, 4.75) (P = 0.002). The co-exposure to MEL, CYA, and four phthalate metabolites (MEHP, MBzP, MCPP, and MECPP) presented significantly interactive effects on the markers of early kidney impairment, respectively. There were the independent and interactive effects of exposure to MEL, CYA, and specific phthalate metabolites on early kidney impairment. Due to co-exposure to multiple environmental chemicals in our daily life, more attention should be paid to the health damage raised by the synergistic effects of environmental chemicals.

Species-specific climate Suitable Conditions Index and dengue transmission in Guangdong, China

Background

Optimal climatic conditions for dengue vector mosquito species may play a significant role in dengue transmission. We previously developed a species-specific Suitable Conditions Index (SCI) for Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, respectively. These SCIs rank geographic locations based on their climatic suitability for each of these two dengue vector species and theoretically define parameters for transmission probability. The aim of the study presented here was to use these SCIs together with socio-environmental factors to predict dengue outbreaks in the real world.

Methods

A negative binomial regression model was used to assess the relationship between vector species-specific SCI and autochthonous dengue cases after accounting for potential confounders in Guangdong, China. The potential interactive effect between the SCI for Ae. albopictus and the SCI for Ae. aegypti on dengue transmission was assessed.

Results

The SCI for Ae. aegypti was found to be positively associated with autochthonous dengue transmission (incidence rate ratio: 1.06, 95% confidence interval: 1.03, 1.09). A significant interaction effect between the SCI of Ae. albopictus and the SCI of Ae. aegypti was found, with the SCI of Ae. albopictus significantly reducing the effect of the SCI of Ae. aegypti on autochthonous dengue cases. The difference in SCIs had a positive effect on autochthonous dengue cases.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that dengue fever is more transmittable in regions with warmer weather conditions (high SCI for Ae. aegypti). The SCI of Ae. aegypti would be a useful index to predict dengue transmission in Guangdong, China, even in dengue epidemic regions with Ae. albopictus present. The results also support the benefit of the SCI for evaluating dengue outbreak risk in terms of vector sympatry and interactions in the absence of entomology data in future research.

Interactive short-term effects of meteorological factors and air pollution on hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases

A substantial number of studies have demonstrated the association between air pollution and adverse health effects. However, few studies have explored the potential interactive effects between meteorological factors and air pollution. This study attempted to evaluate the interactive effects between meteorological factors (temperature and relative humidity) and air pollution ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]) on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Next, the high-risk population susceptible to air pollution was identified. We collected daily counts of CVD hospitalizations, air pollution, and weather data in Nanning from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015. Generalized additive models (GAMs) with interaction terms were adopted to estimate the interactive effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on CVD after controlling for seasonality, day of the week, and public holidays. On low-temperature days, an increase of [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] was associated with increases of 4.31% (2.39%, 6.26%) at lag 2; 2.74% (1.65%, 3.84%) at lag 0-2; and 0.13% (0.02%, 0.23%) at lag 0-3 in CVD hospitalizations, respectively. During low relative humidity days, a [Formula: see text] increment of lag 0-3 exposure was associated with increases of 3.43% (4.61%, 2.67%) and 0.10% (0.04%, 0.15%) for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. On high relative humidity days, an increase of [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] was associated with an increase of 5.86% (1.82%, 10.07%) at lag 0-2 in CVD hospitalizations. Moreover, elderly (≥ 65 years) and female patients were vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. There were interactive effects between air pollutants and meteorological factors on CVD hospitalizations. The risk that [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] posed to CVD hospitalizations could be significantly enhanced by low temperatures. For [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], CVD hospitalization risk increased in low relative humidity. The effects of [Formula: see text] were enhanced at high relative humidity.

Light availability modulates the responses of the microalgae Desmodesmus sp. to micron-sized polyvinyl chloride microplastics

The vertical movement of large-size and high-density MPs in the water column is usually along with dynamic changes in light intensity. However, whether the change in light availability affects the bioeffects of MPs on surrounding microalgae is currently unknown. This study investigated the effects of micron-sized polyvinyl chloride (mPVC, 143.5 μm) microplastics, alone and in combination with light intensity (from 7.5 to 162.5 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) on the growth and physiology of Desmodesmus sp. Although mPVC did not impact microalgal growth under optimal light (40 and 93.8 μmol·m^-2·s^-1), it could induce a no-contact shading effect, thereby significantly affecting the physiology of Desmodesmus sp. The growth of Desmodesmus sp. exposed to mPVC was enhanced under a high light intensity of 162.5 μmol·m^-2·s^-1 which can induce growth inhibition but was retarded when under a light inadequacy condition (20 μmol·m^-2·s^-1), along with a dose-dependent effect. Significantly, the photosynthesis of Desmodesmus sp. was a highly sensitive metabolic pathway to mPVC stress and largely influenced by the plastic particles under different light conditions. Additionally, mPVC modulated the energy metabolism strategy of Desmodesmus sp., depending on exposure dose and external light availability. Our findings provided a critical basis for the risk assessment of MPs in fluctuating light conditions.

Interactive Effects Between Temperature and PM2.5 on Mortality: A Study of Varying Coefficient Distributed Lag Model - Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, 2013-2020

Introduction

There is a large body of epidemiological evidence showing significantly increased mortality risks from air pollution and temperature. However, findings on the modification of the association between air pollution and mortality by temperature are mixed.

Methods

We used a varying coefficient distributed lag model to assess the complex interplay between air temperature and PM_2.5 on daily mortality in Guangzhou City from 2013 to 2020, with the aim of establishing the PM_2.5-mortality association at different temperatures and exploring synergetic mortality risks from PM_2.5 and temperature on vulnerable populations.

Results

We observed near-linear concentration-response associations between PM_2.5 and mortality across different temperature levels. Each 10 μg/m³ increase of PM_2.5 in low, medium, and high temperature strata was associated with increments of 0.73% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38%, 1.09%], 0.12% (95% CI: −0.27%, 0.52%), and 0.46% (95% CI: 0.11%, 0.81%) in non-accidental mortality, with a statistically significant difference between low and medium temperatures (P=0.02). There were significant modification effects of PM_2.5 by low temperature for cardiovascular mortality and among individuals 75 years or older.

Conclusions

Low temperatures may exacerbate physiological responses to short-term PM_2.5 exposure in Guangzhou, China.

Combined effects of the pesticide spinetoram and the cyanobacterium Microcystis on the water flea Daphnia pulex

Spinetoram is one of the most worldwidely used pesticides for its high insecticidal efficacy and low human toxicity. Following the large usage of spinetoram, the ecotoxicity and environmental risks to aquatic ecosystems have call for urgent study. In the present study, we investigated the combined effects of spinetoram and the harmful alga Microcystis aeruginosa in freshwater, on survival and reproduction of Daphnia pulex. Acute toxicity test of spinetoram resulted in negative effects on survival, with a 48-h LC₅₀ value of 37.71 μg L^-1. Under the long-time exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.18 and 0.35 μg L^-1) of spinetoram and a low composition of Microcystis (30%) in the diet, D. pulex showed both shorter longevity and lower fecundity; the time to first brood also increased. At population level, carrying capacity was highly decreased by spinetoram and Microcystis, whereas a significant decrease of intrinsic growth rate was observed at 0.35 μg L^-1 spinetoram with 30% Microcystis as food. The present study highlighted that pesticide spinetoram had highly toxic effects on D. pulex and could reduce the tolerance of D. pulex to M. aeruginosa, causing great effects on D. pulex population in natural waterbodies.

Effects of nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on soil N2O emission from natural ecosystems: A global meta-analysis

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) enrichment play an important role in regulating soil N₂O emission, but their interactive effect remains elusive (i.e. whether the effect of P or N enrichment on soil N₂O emission varies between ambient and elevated soil N or P conditions). Here, we conducted a Bayesian meta-analysis across the global natural ecosystems to determine this effect. Our results showed that P enrichment significantly decreased soil N₂O emission by 13.9% at ambient soil N condition. This N₂O mitigation is likely due to the decreased soil NO₃^--N content (-17.6%) derived by the enhanced plant uptake when the P limitation was alleviated by P enrichment. However, this P-induced N₂O (and NO₃^--N) mitigation was not found at elevated soil N condition. Additionally, N enrichment significantly increased soil N₂O emission by 101.4%, which was associated with the increased soil NH₄⁺-N (+41.0%) and NO₃^--N (+82.3%). However, the effect of N enrichment on soil N₂O emission did not differ between ambient and elevated soil P subgroups, indicating that the P-derived N₂O mitigation could be masked by N enrichment. Further analysis showed that manipulated N rate, soil texture, soil dissolved organic nitrogen, soil total nitrogen, soil organic carbon, soil pH, aboveground plant biomass, belowground plant biomass, and plant biomass nitrogen were the main factors affecting soil N₂O emission under N enrichment. Taken together, our study provides evidence that P enrichment has the potential to reduce soil N₂O emission from natural ecosystems, but this mitigation effect could be masked by N enrichment.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improve the growth and performance in the seedlings of Leymus chinensis under alkali and drought stresses

Alkali and drought stresses are increasing severe environmental problems throughout the world, especially in the Songnen grassland of northern China. Leymus chinensis is the dominant grass species in the Songnen grassland of northern China and the most promising species for grassland restoration. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can colonize 80% of vascular plants, which can enhance the growth of host plants and provide extrinsic protection against abiotic stresses. However, little is known about the interaction effect of alkali and drought stresses on plant-AM symbionts. Here, seedlings of Leymus chinensis inoculated with or without mycorrhizae were cultivated in soil with 0, 100 or 200 mM NaHCO₃ under 0, 5 or 10% (w/v) PEG treatment, and the changes in growth, osmotic adjustment substances and ions were measured. The results showed that the interaction of alkali and drought stresses caused greater seedling growth inhibition than either single alkali or drought stress due to ion toxicity and oxidative damage. Mycorrhizae could alleviate the growth inhibition of seedlings under alkali or drought stress. The interaction of alkali and drought stresses did not affect the alleviating effect of mycorrhizae on seedling growth but improved the osmotic regulation ability and ionic balance of the seedlings. Our results clearly show different effects of the interaction of alkali and drought stresses versus a single stress (alkali or drought) on plant development and provide new insights into the positive effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on host plants under such stress conditions.

Effects of dietary leucine and valine levels on growth performance, glycolipid metabolism and immune response in Tilapia GIFT Oreochromis niloticus

An 8-week feeding trial was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary leucine (Leu) and valine (Val) levels on growth performance, glycolipid metabolism and immune response in Oreochromis niloticus. Fish (15.23 ± 0.05 g) were randomly fed four diets containing two Leu levels (1.2% and 2.3%) and two Val levels (0.7% and 1.4%) as a 2 × 2 experimental design (LL-LV, LL-HV, HL-LV and HL-HV). Compared with LL-LV group, the growth parameters (final weight, daily growth coefficient (DGC) and growth rate per metabolic body weight (GR_MBW)), feed conversion rate (FCR), the activities of intestinal amylase, lipase, creatine kinase (CK) and Na⁺, K⁺-ATPase, liver NAD⁺/NADH ratio, as well as the expression of SIRT1, GK, PK, FBPase, PPARα, CPT IA, ACO and IL10 all increased significantly in the HL-LV group; however, in the high Val group, final weight, DGC, GR_MBW, intestinal enzyme activities, as well as the expression of PEPCK, SREBP1, FAS, IL8 and IL10 of the HL-HV group were significantly lower than those of the LL-HV group, while the opposite was true for the remaining indicators. Significant interactions between dietary Leu and Val were observed in final weight, DGC, GR_MBW, plasma IL1β and IL6 levels, intestinal amylase and CK activities, liver NAD⁺/NADH ratio, as well as the expression of SIRT1, PK, PEPCK, FBPase, SREBP1, FAS, PPARα, CPT IA, ACO, NF-κB1, IL1β, IL6 and IL10. The highest values of growth parameters, intestinal enzyme activities and expression of SIRT1, FBPase, PPARα, CPT IA and ACO were observed in the HL-LV group, while the opposite was true for the expression of SREBP1, FAS, PPARα, NF-κB1, IL1β and IL6. Overall, our findings indicated that dietary Leu and Val can effect interactively, and fish fed with diets containing 2.3% Leu with 0.7% Val had the best growth performance and hepatic health status of O. niloticus.

Threshold effects and interactive effects of total zinc and selenium intake on cognitive function in older adults

BACKGROUND & AIMS

The aim of this study was to assess threshold effects and interactive effects of total zinc and selenium intake on cognitive function in older adults.

METHODS

We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. Zinc and selenium intake were obtained through two 24-h dietary recalls. Cognitive performance was evaluated by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Smooth curve fitting, two-piecewise multivariable linear regression models, binary logistic regression model, multiplicative interactions model, and additive interactions model were used to evaluate the association between zinc, selenium intake and their interactive effect on cognitive function.

RESULTS

A total of 2450 participants aged 60 years or older were included. Zinc and selenium intake was non-linearly associated with cognitive function. The inflection point for zinc intake was 8.94 mg/d in males and 7.58 mg/d in females. When zinc intake was below inflection point, zinc intake was positively associated with the DSST test in males (β = 1.02, 95% CI, 0.44 to 1.60) and females (β = 0.94, 95% CI, 0.26 to 1.62). When zinc intake above inflection point, there is no association between zinc intake and the DSST test in both sexs. The inflection point for selenium intake was 186.33 μg/d in males and 68.40 μg/d in females. Among males, the β (95% CIs) was 0.03 (0.01,0.06) to the left side of the inflection point and -0.06 (-0.10, -0.02) to the right of the inflection point. Among females, the β (95% CIs) was 0.13 (0.04,0.22) to the left side of the inflection point and 0.01 (-0.01,0.04) to the right of the inflection point. Besides, zinc and selenium have significant interaction on DSST test only in females (P = 0.028, RERI = 0.418).

CONCLUSIONS

The present study demonstrated that zinc and selenium intake was non-linearly associated with cognitive function in different sex. There was an interactive effect between zinc and selenium intake on improving cognitive function, especially in females.

Independent and interactive effects of air pollutants and ambient heat exposure on congenital heart defects

Accumulating studies have been focused on the independent effects of air pollutants and ambient heat exposure on congenital heart defects (CHDs) but with inconsistent results, and their interactive effect remains unclear. A case-control study including 921 cases and 9210 controls was conducted in Changsha, China in warm season in 2015-2018. The gravidas were assigned monthly averages of daily air pollutants and daily maximum temperature using the nearest monitoring station method and city-wide average method, respectively, during the first trimester of pregnancy. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the independent effects of each air pollutant and different ambient heat exposure indicators. Their additive joint effects were quantified using attribute proportions of interaction (API). Increasing SO₂ consistently increased the risk of CHDs in the first trimester of pregnancy, with aORs ranging from 1.78 to 2.04. CO, NO₂ and PM_2.5 exposure in the first month of pregnancy, and O₃ exposure in the second and third month of pregnancy were also associated with elevated risks of CHDs, with aORs ranging from 1.04 to 1.15. Depending on the ambient heat exposure indicator used, air pollutants showed more apparent synergistic effects (API > 0) with less and moderately intense heat exposure. Maternal exposure to CO, NO₂, SO₂, PM_2.5 and O₃ during early pregnancy increased risk of CHDs, and ambient heat exposure may enhance these effects. Our findings help to understand the interactive effect of air pollution with ambient heat exposure on CHDs, which is of vital public health significance.

Interactive effect of water level and flushing rate on population dynamics of a harmful cyanobacterial species: Raphidiopsis raciborskii

Changes in water level and flushing rate directly affect to a large extent the biomass of harmful cyanobacteria, and drive the shift of phytoplankton composition between cyanobacteria dominance/non-dominance in eutrophic waters. Here, we gave a theoretical formula describing the combinational effect of water level and flushing rate on cyanobacterial biomass in eutrophic and well-mixed waters. We also formulated an equation predicting the water level and flushing rate at which cyanobacteria become non-dominating in such water columns. The formulae were confronted with field observations of a low-light adapted cyanobacterium in a large coastal reservoir of southern China. Our formulae demonstrate that water level and flushing rate have an interactive effect on the equilibrium biomass of low-light adapted cyanobacteria in mixed and turbid waters. The formulae were well fitted to the field observation of Raphidiopsis raciborskii population in the reservoir during four dry seasons. In agreement with the theoretical analysis, multiple regression analysis also showed that the interaction between water level and flushing rate is able to interpret the variation of R. raciborskii biomass in the water column. The two formulae are applicable for predicting the response of low-light adapted cyanobacteria to local climate change. Our findings have practical significance in designing measures against the dominance of low light-adapted cyanobacteria in reservoirs.

Interaction between testosterone and obesity on hypertension: A population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

We aimed to evaluate the effects of serum testosterone, obesity and their interaction on blood pressure (BP) parameters and hypertension among Chinese rural adults.

METHODS

A total of 6199 adults were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Serum testosterone was measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Logistic regression and linear regression were used to evaluate the association between testosterone, hypertension and BP parameters (including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP)). A generalized linear model was performed to identify the interactive effects of testosterone and obesity on hypertension.

RESULTS

High levels of serum testosterone were associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension in males (odds ratio (OR): 0.69, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.53, 0.89). After stratification by obesity, observed associations were only found in non-obese males. Each one-unit increase in ln-testosterone was associated with a 1.23 mmHg decrease in SBP, 0.97 mmHg decrease in DBP, and 1.05 mmHg decrease in MAP among males. Moreover, interactive effects between testosterone and obesity on hypertension and BP parameters were found, indicating that protective effects of serum testosterone on hypertension and BP parameters were counteracted and accompanied by increased values of obesity-related indicators in males, and additional testosterone increased BP parameters and prevalence of hypertension at high levels of waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio in females.

CONCLUSIONS

Elevated levels of serum testosterone were associated with decreased BP parameters and prevalent hypertension in males, and obesity modifying effects of serum testosterone on BP parameters and hypertension.

The interactive effects of ambient air pollutants-meteorological factors on confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 120 Chinese cities

Emerging evidence has confirmed meteorological factors and air pollutants affect novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, no studies to date have considered the impact of interactions between meteorological factors and air pollutants on COVID-19 transmission. This study explores the association between ambient air pollutants (PM_2.5, NO₂, SO₂, CO, and O₃), meteorological factors (average temperature, diurnal temperature range, relative humidity, wind velocity, air pressure, precipitation, and hours of sunshine), and their interaction on confirmed case counts of COVID-19 in 120 Chinese cities. We modeled total confirmed cases of COVID-19 as the dependent variable with meteorological factors, air pollutants, and their interactions as the independent variables. To account for potential migration effects, we included the migration scale index (MSI) from Wuhan to each of the 120 cities included in the model, using data from 15 Jan. to 18 Mar. 2020. As an important confounding factor, MSI was considered in a negative binomial regression analysis. Positive associations were found between the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and CO, PM_2.5, relative humidity, and O₃, with and without MSI-adjustment. Negative associations were also found for SO₂ and wind velocity both with and without controlling for population migration. In addition, air pollutants and meteorological factors had interactive effects on COVID-19 after controlling for MSI. In conclusion, air pollutants, meteorological factors, and their interactions all affect COVID-19 cases.

Short-term phosphorus addition augments the effects of nitrogen addition on soil respiration in a typical steppe

Soil respiration is one of the largest carbon (C) sources in terrestrial ecosystems and is sensitive to soil nutrient variation. Although nitrogen (N) availability affects soil respiration, other nutrients, such as phosphorous (P), which play pivotal roles in plant growth and microbial activity, may also affect soil respiration. In addition, N and P have been widely reported to interactively affect plant growth; however, their interactive effects on soil respiration have rarely been studied. Therefore, we conducted a short-term, two-factor experiment (from 2013 to 2015) to determine whether N and P addition can interactively affect soil respiration in a northern Chinese steppe. Nitrogen addition elevated soil respiration by 9.5%, whereas P addition did not affect soil respiration in the studied steppe across all treatments. However, neither N nor P addition significantly affected soil respiration alone in the experiment. Furthermore, N and P interactively affected soil respiration. Nitrogen addition did not affect soil respiration in the ambient P plots, but significantly elevated soil respiration (by 17.7%) in P addition plots across the three growing seasons. The effects of N addition on soil respiration were primarily correlated with the responses of vegetation cover and litter biomass to N addition in the experiment. Our results demonstrate that P addition augments the effects of N addition on soil respiration. Soil nutrient contents should be incorporated into predictive models for terrestrial C cycle response to N addition.

Natural and human environment interactively drive spread pattern of COVID-19: A city-level modeling study in China

A novel Coronavirus COVID-19 has caused high morbidity and mortality in China and worldwide. A few studies have explored the impact of climate change or human activity on the disease incidence in China or a city. The integrated study concerning environment impact on the emerging disease is rarely reported. Therefore, based on the two-stage modeling study, we investigate the effect of both natural and human environment on COVID-19 incidence at a city level. Besides, the interactive effect of different factors on COVID-19 incidence is analyzed using Geodetector; the impact of effective factors and interaction terms on COVID-19 is simulated with Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) models. The results find that mean temperature (MeanT), destination proportion in population flow from Wuhan (WH), migration scale (MS), and WH*MeanT, are generally promoting for COVID-19 incidence before Wuhan's shutdown (T1); the WH and MeanT play a determinant role in the disease spread in T1. The effect of environment on COVID-19 incidence after Wuhan's shutdown (T2) includes more factors (including mean DEM, relative humidity, precipitation (Pre), travel intensity within a city (TC), and their interactive terms) than T1, and their effect shows distinct spatial heterogeneity. Interestingly, the dividing line of positive-negative effect of MeanT and Pre on COVID-19 incidence is 8.5°C and 1 mm, respectively. In T2, WH has weak impact, but the MS has the strongest effect. The COVID-19 incidence in T2 without quarantine is also modeled using the developed GWR model, and the modeled incidence shows an obvious increase for 75.6% cities compared with reported incidence in T2 especially for some mega cities. This evidences national quarantine and traffic control take determinant role in controlling the disease spread. The study indicates that both natural environment and human factors integratedly affect the spread pattern of COVID-19 in China.

Exploring the decentralized treatment of sulfamethoxazole-contained poultry wastewater through vertical-flow multi-soil-layering systems in rural communities

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is the most widely distributed sulfonamide antibiotics detected in decentralized poultry wastewater in rural communities. As an economically-feasible and eco-friendly technology for decentralized wastewater treatment in rural areas, vertical-flow multi-soil-layering (MSL) system was promising to mitigate the ecological and human health risks from SMX in such areas. The treatment of SMX-contained poultry wastewater by using MSL systems was investigated for the first time, and the main and interactive effects of related multiple variables on system performance were explored through factorial analysis, including material of permeable layer, concentration of SMX, and pH of influent. Results indicated that SMX concentration and pH of influent showed significantly negative effects on SMX removal. Medical stone used in MSL systems with larger surface area could intensify the SMX removal compared to anthracite. MSL systems showed stable performances on SMX removal with the best SMX removal efficiency more than 91%. A novel stepwise-cluster inference (SCI) model was developed for the first time to map the multivariate numeric relationships between state variables and SMX removal under discrete and nonlinear complexities. It was demonstrated that the effect of SMX in wastewater with high concentration was significant on the differentiation of soil bacteria composition in MSL systems based on microbial diversity analysis. These results can help better understand the mechanism of SMX removal in MSL systems from perspectives of factorial analysis, numeric modeling, and microbiological change.

Interactive effect between temperature and fine particulate matter on chronic disease hospital admissions in the urban area of Tianjin, China

This study focuses on effects of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) on chronic disease under different levels of temperature. We obtained type 2 diabetes, cerebral stroke and coronary heart disease hospital admissions (HAs) from five hospitals in urban Tianjin as well as the concentrations of PM_2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and sulphur dioxide (SO₂). We used distributed lag nonlinear models to explore nonlinear and lag effects of PM_2.5. In single-pollutant models, PM_2.5 was positively associated with type 2 diabetes, cerebral stroke and coronary heart disease HAs, with strongest effects at lag1, lag0 and lag06, respectively. The corresponding relative risk rates (RR%) were 1.836%, 2.083% and 6.428%. In co-pollutant models, the correlation between PM_2.5 and HAs on high-temperature days was generally stronger than that on low-temperature days. This study indicated that PM_2.5 can increase HA rates for these chronic diseases, and effects of PM_2.5 on high-temperature days were stronger than that on low-temperature days.

Effects of plants competition on critical bacteria selection and pollutants dynamics in a long-term polyculture constructed wetland

The effects of mix planting on the functions of plants, microorganisms, and their interactions were studied in a CW planted with Phragmites australis and Typha orientalis over six years. Findings show notable competition among plant species, with excessive overgrowth of the dominant species (P. australis) over T. orientalis. The excessive outcompeting by P. australis resulted in significantly higher plant density and biomass of 20.1 times and 11.2 times, respectively than that of T. orientalis. Interspecific competition appeared to considerably intensify plants contributions to nitrogen and phosphorus removal, which increased from circa 9% in the first year up to 42% in the sixth year. High-throughput pyrosequencing and network analyses demonstrated that the dominant species stands harbor diverse bacterial communities that could enhance the wetland performance through carbon degradation, nutrient cycling, and supporting plant growth. These results provide useful insights into the interactive effects of plants and bacteria in polyculture constructed wetlands.

Ocean acidification, hypoxia and warming impair digestive parameters of marine mussels

Global change and anthropogenic activities have driven marine environment changes dramatically during the past century, and hypoxia, acidification and warming have received much attention recently. Yet, the interactive effects among these stressors on marine organisms are extremely complex and not accurately clarified. Here, we evaluated the combined effects of low dissolved oxygen (DO), low pH and warming on the digestive enzyme activities of the mussel Mytilus coruscus. In this experiment, mussels were exposed to eight treatments, including two degrees of pH (8.1, 7.7), DO (6, 2 mg/l) and temperature (30 °C and 20 °C) for 30 days. Amylase (AMS), lipase (LPS), trypsin (TRY), trehalase (TREH) and lysozyme (LZM) activities were measured in the digestive glands of mussels. All the tested stress conditions showed significant effects on the enzymatic activities. AMS, LPS, TRY, TREH showed throughout decreased trend in their activities due to low pH, low DO, increased temperature and different combinations of these three stressors with time but LZM showed increased and then decreased trend in their activities. Hypoxia and warming showed almost similar effects on the enzymatic activities. PCA showed a positive correlation among all measured biochemical parameters. Therefore, the fitness of mussel is likely impaired by such marine environmental changes and their population may be affected under the global change scenarios.

Diurnal temperature range and childhood asthma in Hefei, China: Does temperature modify the association?

BACKGROUND

The present study aimed to understand the effect of diurnal temperature range (DTR) on childhood asthma in Hefei, China, and to explore the effect of temperature on the DTR-asthma association.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Daily data on hospital admissions for childhood asthma, air pollutants, and weather variables in Hefei, China, from 1st January 2014 to 31st December 2015, were collected. A generalized additive model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to quantify the effects of DTR on the total, age- and gender-specific hospital admissions for childhood asthma. A non-parametric bivariate response surface model, and a generalized additive model combined with a stratified parametric model were used to explore the interaction between DTR and temperature.

RESULTS

We observed that high DTR was associated with an increase in hospital admissions for childhood asthma. When DTR increased from 6.7 °C to 16.8 °C (99% percentile), hospital admissions for childhood asthma increased by 13% (relative risk: 1.13, 95% confidence interval: 1.07, 1.12). The analysis stratified, by mean temperature level, suggested that when DTR increased by 1 °C at low temperatures, asthma hospitalizations in total children, girls, boys and school-age children increased by 5.0% (95% CI: 2.6%, 7.5%), 3.7% (95% CI: 0.4%, 5.7%), 2.9% (95% CI: 0.8%, 4.4%) and 5.0% (95% CI: 2.6%, 7.5%), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that the impact of high DTR should be considered among public health advice for children with existing asthma. Those days with high DTR and low mean temperature need extra attention.

The effect of vitamin D on sarcopenia depends on the level of physical activity in older adults

OBJECTIVE

Sarcopenia in older adults is closely related to vitamin D deficiency and reduced levels of physical activity, but little has been reported on the interaction between physical activity and the positive effects of vitamin D. The purpose of this study was to explore the interactive effect of vitamin D and physical activity on muscle mass and function through animal experiments and population surveys.

METHODS

Male 4-week-old C57BL/6J mice were fed different purified diets: a vitamin D-deficient diet (with increased calcium and phosphorus to prevent the effects of abnormal mineral levels on muscle) or a 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25D)-supplemented diet. After 24 weeks on the assigned diets, the mice were immobilized. The level of skeletal muscle atrophy in the mice was determined by grip strength, gastrocnemius (GA) muscle mass and muscle fiber cross-sectional area (CSA); additionally, the protein expression levels of FOXO3a and the E3 ubiquitin ligases MuRF1 and MAFbx were detected. A cross-sectional study included data from 4139 older adults (64.9% women, 67.9 ± 6.7 years) as part of a survey in Shenyang, Northeast China. The associations of serum 25(OH)D3 and physical activity with timed up and go test (TUG) performance, handgrip strength, calf circumference, and body muscle mass were assessed by a linear regression analysis that was adjusted for covariates.

RESULTS

In activity-limited mice, vitamin D deficiency accelerated the decrease in GA muscle weight, muscle fiber CSA, and grip strength and increased the protein expression of MuRF1, MAFbx, and FOXO3a (all P < 0.05). In addition, 1,25D supplementation may inhibit the grip-strength reduction induced by limited activity (P = 0.069). Serum 25(OH)D3 and physical activity were linearly related to TUG time (P < 0.001) and handgrip strength (P < 0.05) after adjustment for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), education level, smoking status, and serum calcium level. Serum 25(OH)D3 and physical activity had interactive effects on TUG (P < 0.001) and handgrip strength (P < 0.05) but not calf circumference or body muscle mass in older adults.

CONCLUSIONS

The effect of vitamin D on muscle strength and physical performance depends on physical activity level in the elderly. It is recommended that older adults strive to avoid both physical inactivity and vitamin D deficiency. Because physical inactivity and vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate muscle atrophy, the biological mechanism may involve synergistic effects of vitamin D and physical activity on the promotion of muscle protein ubiquitination and degradation.

Analysis of the associations of indoor air pollution and tobacco use with morbidity of lung cancer in Xuanwei, China

BACKGROUND

Indoor air pollution emitted by smoky coal combustion in unventilated fire pits used to cause high lung cancer mortality in Xuanwei. Stove improvements were implemented from the 1970s to the 1980s. However, the present lung cancer mortality rate in Xuanwei shows almost no significant declining trend. Tobacco use is another established risk factor for lung cancer. Smoking prevalence and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure rate are both high in Xuanwei. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the relationship among indoor air pollution over 30 years ago, tobacco use, and lung cancer risk, to further explore the competitive effects of these two risk factors.

METHODS

A case-control study design was used. We constructed an unconditional logistic regression model to evaluate the relationship among indoor air pollution, tobacco use, and lung cancer risk, adjusting the covariates and with an interactive term between the two key variables. We further quantitatively assessed the maximum decrease in the indoor air pollution effect when facing competition from tobacco use via a sensitivity analysis. First, the effect of indoor air pollution on lung cancer without considering tobacco use was estimated. Then, we calculated a "bias factor" and divided the effect estimation by this factor.

RESULTS

We found a strong delayed effect of indoor air pollution over 30 years ago in each subgroup with different tobacco use history. The effects of tobacco use were relatively small, but in areas without smoky coal combustion and indoor air pollution over 30 years prior, the lung cancer risk caused by tobacco use became much stronger and statistically significant. Moreover, we assessed that the effects of tobacco use on lung cancer could reduce a maximum of 18%-30% of the effects of indoor air pollution, but did not influence their statistical significance; the competitive effect from ever smoking was stronger than that from SHS exposure.

CONCLUSIONS

At present in Xuanwei, delayed effect of the indoor air pollution over 30 years ago remains the major risk factor for lung cancer. Concomitantly, the adverse effect of tobacco use on lung cancer is becoming more apparent; local governments should start considering public health activities for smoking cessation promotion and SHS exposure prevention.

A biophysiological perspective on enhanced nitrate removal from decentralized domestic sewage using gravitational-flow multi-soil-layering systems

Multi-soil-layering (MSL) system with brick-wall pattern structure and gravitational flow can be used for decentralized rural domestic sewage treatment. The capability of soil for contaminant removal is maximized within soil mixture blocks (SMBs). However, the performance of removing nitrate was still not ideal during operation. To improve its performance in MSL system, the relationship between biophysiological characteristics of denitrifying species and operating conditions was studied. Microbial species diversity of activated sludge and soil samples were analyzed. The significant effects of independent factors and their interactions on microbial species diversity and denitrifying species abundance were revealed on the basis of factorial analysis. The results indicated activated sludge in SMBs played a key role in increasing the richness of denitrifying species in MSL system. Slow-release poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) had the most dominant positive effect on increasing denitrifying species abundance. Submersion had significantly positive effect on species richness in SMBs. These three factors, including activated sludge, PBS in SMBs, and submersion condition had different significant effects on microbial responses. They were favorable for denitrification and ensuring a better removal efficiency of nitrate and total nitrogen. The porous zeolites were served as the habitats for most of aerobic bacteria to form biofilms, which could promote the oxygen consumption in both sewage and system to improve denitrification in SMBs. The results could help on the enhancement of denitrification in MSL system from biophysiological insights. It can provide a sound strategy for using MSL system with great performance on contaminant removal.

Interactive effect of carbon source with influent COD/N on nitrogen removal and microbial community structure in subsurface flow constructed wetlands

Carbon source and influent COD/N (chemical oxygen demand: total nitrogen) pose distinct effects on nitrogen removal efficiency and microbial community structure of constructed wetlands. To investigate the interactive effect of carbon source with COD/N on nitrogen removal and microbial community structure in subsurface flow constructed wetlands, glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and sodium acetate (C₂H₃NaO₂) were used to determine five COD/N ratios in nine groups of constructed wetlands divided into glucose constructed wetlands and sodium acetate constructed wetlands. Results showed that efficiency in COD removal increased with COD/N, and peak value reached 92.7%. Interactive effect of carbon source with COD/N on system pH and ammonium removal was notably significant. Differences in ammonium removal performance between treatments were achieved by the variation of influent COD/N ratio and the change of system pH resulted from different carbon sources, and the result suggested that glucose was a better choice at high COD/N ratio. System microbial community structure was significantly affected by carbon source, influent COD/N ratio and their interaction. Microbial biomass in constructed wetlands significantly increased with increasing COD/N ratio. Higher density and diversity of fungus were observed in glucose constructed wetlands, particularly at COD/N ratio of 7 and 10.

Uptake kinetics and interaction of selenium species in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings

Selenite and selenate are two main selenium (Se) forms absorbed by plants. The comparative effects of selenite and/or selenate on Se uptake and translocation in plants in spite of their coexistence in the environment are still unclear. Therefore, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings were grown in a hydroponic solution with exogenous selenite, selenate, or selenite and selenate mixed, and Se concentrations in shoots, roots, and xylem sap were measured after harvest. Results showed that selenite (> 0.1 mg Se L^-1) could cause phytotoxicity more easily than selenate (> 1 mg Se L^-1) under hydroponic conditions. And the absorbability rate of tomato to selenate was higher than that to selenite when Se application level was 0.0175-0.2998 mg L^-1, while the opposite result was observed in other Se concentrations. More Se accumulated in roots and Se(VI) in the xylem sap decreased when both Se forms supplied. This study demonstrated that the difference between selenite and selenate on Se uptake and translocation in tomatoes depended on exogenous Se concentration. And selenite could inhibit the absorption and translocation of selenate when supplied with both Se forms.

Interactive effects of trait and state anxieties on time perception

Although some previous studies have investigated the time distortion of anxious patients, it remains open about the interactive effects of trait and state anxieties on time perception. In the present study, participants in high and low trait anxieties perceived 24 negative and 24 neutral words for 2 s in induced anxious and calm mood states, and their time perceptions were recorded by the time reproduction task. The results showed that high trait anxious individuals underestimated the 2-second duration while low trait anxious individuals overestimated the 2-second duration in the anxious state compared with those in the calm state. Meanwhile, in the anxious state, the timing error was absolute for high trait anxious individuals, whereas it was relative for low trait anxious individuals. The results show the interactive effects of trait and state anxieties on time perception. We suggest that the temporal distortion of the high trait anxious individuals in the anxious state might be due to an attentional dysfunction, whereas the temporal distortion of the low trait anxious individuals in the anxious state might be due to a mood congruency.

Interactive effects of global warming and eutrophication on a fast-growing Mediterranean seagrass

Coastal ecosystems, such as seagrasses, are subjected to local (e.g. eutrophication) and global (e.g. warming) stressors. While the separate effects of warming and eutrophication on seagrasses are relatively well known, their joint effects remain largely unstudied. In order to fill this gap, and using Cymodocea nodosa as a model species, we assessed the joint effects of warming (three temperatures, 20 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C) with two potential outcomes of eutrophication: (i) increase in nutrients concentration in the water column (30 and 300 μM), and (ii) organic enrichment in the sediment). Our results confirm that temperature in isolation clearly affects plant performance; while plants exposed to 30 °C performed better than control plants, plants exposed to 35 °C showed clear symptoms of deterioration (e.g. decline of photosynthetic capacity, increase of incidence of necrotic tissue). Plants were unaffected by high ammonium concentrations; however, organic enrichment of sediment had deleterious effects on plant function (photosynthesis, growth, demographic balance). Interestingly, these negative effects were exacerbated by increased temperature. Our findings indicate that in addition to the possibility of the persistence of C. nodosa being directly jeopardized by temperature increase, the joint effects of warming and eutrophication may further curtail its survival. This should be taken into consideration in both predictions of climate change consequences and in local planning.

Interactive effect of sleep duration and physical activity on anxiety/depression in adolescents

Although effects of sleep duration and physical activity (PA) have been demonstrated on mental health in adolescents, their interactive effect has not been studied. This cross-sectional study first examines this interactive effect on anxiety/depression in adolescents. A total of 983 Japanese students aged 12-17 were studied, using a self-report questionnaire. The interaction of sleep duration and amount of PA and their main effects on anxiety/depression, assessed using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), were investigated employing multiple regression, adjusting for grade and sex. Sleep duration and amount of PA were classified as being adequate or not, according to the duration and amount recommended by the National Sleep Foundation and World Health Organization, respectively. As a result, the interaction between sleep duration and amount of PA and their main effects were statistically significant. GHQ-12 score was significantly better in adolescents with either adequate sleep or adequate PA, not both, than those with neither adequate sleep nor adequate PA. The score, however, seemed no further improved in those with both adequate sleep and PA. The present study suggests that effects of sleep and PA on mental health need to be studied with consideration to their interaction.
