Abstract
Natural polyphenols, abundant in the human diet, are derived from a wide variety of sources. Numerous preclinical studies have demonstrated their significant anticancer properties against various malignancies, making them valuable resources for drug development. However, traditional experimental methods for developing anticancer therapies from natural polyphenols are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Recently, artificial intelligence has shown promising advancements in drug discovery. Integrating AI technologies into the development process for natural polyphenols can substantially reduce development time and enhance efficiency. In this study, we review the crucial roles of natural polyphenols in anticancer treatment and explore the potential of AI technologies to aid in drug development. Specifically, we discuss the application of AI in key stages such as drug structure prediction, virtual drug screening, prediction of biological activity, and drug-target protein interaction, highlighting the potential to revolutionize the development of natural polyphenol-based anticancer therapies.

Abstract
Incorporating green tea powder (GTP) into wheat flour-based noodles can significantly improve nutritional value. So, this study investigated the effects of GTP (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2.0%) on the quality properties of dried green tea noodles (DGTN) and cooking-induced changes to phenolic compounds. Mixolab analysis of wheat flour with GTP showed more water absorption of dough, and the developed dough had a firmer structure. GTP markedly increased the toughness of the noodle sheet. DGTN fortified with GTP showed more stable textural properties during cooking and storage, representing higher hardness and tensile strength. The viscosity and thermal properties of DGTN showed that GTP affected the gelatinization and retrogradation behavior of starch, which were closely related to the textural properties. Overall, DGTN prepared with 1.5% GTP showed better quality properties. However, ultra-performance liquid chromatography-time (UPLC/Q-TOF-mass spectrometry [MS]/MS) analysis showed that cooking by boiling significantly decreased phenolic content in 1.5% DGTN; further analysis revealed that the thermal degradation is a key factor in the loss of polyphenols. Therefore, further studies are necessary to focus on the mechanism of cooking-induced polyphenol loss, which is of great significance for improving the nutritional value of cooked DGTN.

Abstract
The storage period of tea is a major factor affecting tea quality. However, the effect of storage years on the non-volatile major functional components and quality of green tea remains largely unknown. In this study, a comparative analysis of organic green teas with varying storage years (1-16 years) was conducted by quantifying 47 functional components, using electronic tongue and chromatic aberration technology, alongside an evaluation of antioxidative capacity. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between the storage years and levels of tea polyphenols, total amino acids, soluble sugars, two phenolic acids, four flavonols, three tea pigments, umami amino acids, and sweet amino acids. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that 10 functional components were identified as effective in distinguishing organic green teas with different storage years. Electronic tongue technology categorized organic green teas with different storage years into three classes. The backpropagation neural network (BPNN) analysis demonstrated that the classification predictive ability of the model based on the electronic tongue was superior to the one based on color difference values and 10 functional components. The combined analysis of antioxidative activity and functional components suggested that organic green teas with shorter storage periods exhibited stronger abilities to suppress superoxide anion radicals and hydroxyl radicals and reduce iron ions due to the higher content of eight components. Long-term-stored organic green teas, with a higher content of substances like L-serine and theabrownins, demonstrated stronger antioxidative capabilities in clearing both lipid-soluble and water-soluble free radicals. Therefore, this study provided a theoretical basis for the quality assessment of green tea and prediction of green tea storage periods.

Abstract
Extra virgin olive oil is a food product from the Mediterranean area that is particularly and continuously experiencing to increasing instances of fraudulent geographical labeling. Therefore, origin protection must be improved, mainly based on its intrinsic chemical composition. This study aimed to perform a preliminary chemical characterization of Abruzzo extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) using rare earth elements (REEs). REEs were evaluated in EVOO samples of different varieties produced in different geographical origins within the Abruzzo region (Italy) in three harvest years using ICP-MS chemometric techniques. Principal component, discriminant, and hierarchical cluster analyses were conducted to verify the influence of the variety, origin, and vintage of the REE composition. The results of a three-year study showed a uniform REE pattern and a strong correlation in most EVOOs, in particular for Y, La, Ce, and Nd. However, europium and erbium were also found in some oil samples. Compared with cultivar and origin, only the harvest year slightly influenced the REE composition, highlighting the interactions of the olive system with the climate and soil chemistry that could affect the multielement composition of EVOOs.

Abstract
A solid phase chemical fractionation (SPCF) of the Mn in hot infusions prepared from commercial samples of roasted (RM) and green mate (GM) using a chelating resin Chelex 100 (NH4+ form) was performed to assess the relative lability of this essential trace element (ETE). In addition, total Mn contents in the RM and GM samples and their infusions were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Total polyphenol (TP) contents and the presence of soluble melanoidins (SM) were correlated with the Mn solubility in the RM and GM infusions. From the SPCF study, it was possible to observe that the soluble Mn forms in the mate infusions were essentially associated with relatively noninert chemical species (98.4-99.7%), suggesting that they may be potentially bioavailable. In addition, the soluble Mn contents in the GM infusions were 20.5% higher than those found in the RM. Mn solubility in the (RM) infusions was highly and directly correlated (r = 0.99) with the soluble TP, while in the GM infusions, it was high and inversely correlated with soluble TP (r = -0.87). On the other hand, Mn solubility in the RM and GM infusions was weakly correlated with the SM. It should be stressed that GM infusions can contribute with 57 and 44% more than the RM infusions to the recommended adequate intake of Mn established for females and males, respectively. Moreover, this work is the first to evaluate and compare the relative lability of Mn and its solubility in the RM and GM infusions.

Abstract
This work focusses on the analysis of anthocyanins present in wild Czech elderberries, using spectrophotometric methods and liquid chromatography. Spectrophotometric methods were used to determine antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, and total anthocyanin content. Further, four major elderberry anthocyanins were determined using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with isocratic elution of 30% aqueous methanol with 5% of formic acid. All optimised methods were applied to the analysis of extracts prepared from frozen and dried elderberry fruit samples, and the results were evaluated using principal component analysis which clearly divided the samples into individual groups according to the sample pretreatment (frozen and dried samples). The frozen samples reached higher values of antioxidant capacity and total phenolic and anthocyanin contents compared to the dried samples, probably due to the degradation of anthocyanins during the drying process.

Abstract
The prevalence of oral health problems is ubiquitous in contemporary society, with particular emphasis placed on the central role of oral flora in mitigating this issue. Both ancient literature and modern research have highlighted the promising application of tea with substantial bioactive properties, particularly dark tea, in preserving and promoting oral health. Liubao tea, a widely consumed dark tea with increasing popularity in recent years, has been reported to possess abundant bioactive constituents, exhibit remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, modulate the flora structure and so on. It may be a promising candidate for addressing oral health problems. In this study, Liubao tea was meticulously extracted, purified and identified, followed by an investigation of its potential to modulate oral microecology by virtue of an acetic acid-induced oral disorder murine model. The results revealed that Liubao tea extract (LTE) application commendably reconstructed the oral mucosal barrier, promoted tissue regeneration and mitigated micro-inflammation. Furthermore, LTE treatment could also ameliorate the oral flora composition by decreasing the abundance of Proteobacteria and increasing the abundance of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria at the phylum level, as well as inhibiting pernicious bacteria such as Streptococcus and Delftia acidovorans. So, it could promote the generation of a beneficial microenvironment and regulate the immune process. Overall, LTE demonstrated remarkable potential in regulating the balance of oral microecology, suggesting that it may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for oral health concerns.

Abstract
The use of bioactive plant extracts in cosmetic products is a common practice. Most of these extracts are obtained by maceration in organic solvents, and depending on which solvents are used, the polarity and the structure of the target molecules will vary. Polyphenols are polar compounds that often display antioxidant and/or antibacterial activities. To extract them, ethanol/water mixtures are usually selected as green solvents. This solid-liquid extraction (assisted or not) requires the use of high volumes of solvents and many additional steps like mixing, agitation, filtration, and evaporation. Alternatively, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) offers many benefits for plant extraction: economical, non-toxic, and naturally concentrated extracts. However, its low polarity is not suitable to solubilize polar compounds. In this study, an experimental design was used to optimize supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of caffeine and catechins from Camellia sinensis. Catechins are recognized for skin care use (antioxidant) and caffeine is also used for its skin care properties and to prevent excess storage of fat in cells. The temperature, modifier content, and water additive percentage were used as independent variables. The results showed that while the temperature was an insignificant parameter, a higher percentage of water (up to 20% in ethanol) and modifier favored the extraction of the polar target molecules. Additionally, the SFE results were compared with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). Finally, a sequential selective extraction of caffeine from catechins is also presented.

Abstract
The total and soluble contents of three potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Cd, Cr, and Pb) and two essential elements (Cu and Ni) in commercial green and roasted mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) and their hot infusions were accessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Total polyphenolic (TP) contents in the infusions were accessed by Folin-Ciocalteu method, and the presence of soluble melanoidins (SM) was evaluated by measuring absorbances at 420 nm. The soluble element contents in hot infusions of green mate were present in the following increasing order: Pb < Cd < Cr < Cu, and Ni. For hot infusions of roasted mate, the increasing order was: Cu < Pb < Cd < Cr < Ni. Except for Cr, hot infusions of roasted mate supply lower contents of the soluble PTEs than hot infusions of green mate. Cadmium was the only of evaluated trace element found in hot infusions of green and roasted mate as well as in some of their mate samples above the maximum allowed contents established by Brazilian legislation. Despite this, polyphenol and melanoidin contents in green and roasted mate infusions may reduce Cd bioavailability. The soluble trace elements that correlated directly with total polyphenols in hot infusions of green or roasted mate are indirectly correlated with the presence of soluble melanoidins. Moreover, this is the first study to evaluate the correlations of soluble forms of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb with the presence of SM and TP contents in hot infusions of green and roasted mate.

Abstract
Synthetic gallic acid derivatives are employed as additives in food, personal care products, and pharmaceutical formulations. Despite their widespread use, little is known about their human exposure, health effects, and metabolism. Green tea catechins are natural antioxidants, known for their health-promoting properties, and are also employed as food additives or in personal care products. The objective of this study was to establish metabolic pathways involved in the biotransformation of green tea catechins and synthetic gallate esters. Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) was used to elucidate oxidative and methylated metabolites, in addition to glutathione conjugates, formed in vitro using human liver microsomal incubations. The developed method was applied to 14 different parent compounds with a wide range of polarities, for the structural elucidation of many known and novel metabolites. These results serve to inform about the wide variety of possible metabolites formed upon exposure to these compounds.

Abstract
Carob pod powder prepared by cryogenic (CG) and vibratory grinding for 4 min (VG-4) and 8 min (VG-8) was evaluated for its antioxidant properties, and phenolic content. The bioaccessibility of phenolics was determined after the oral, gastric, and intestinal digestion phases in vitro. CG carob powder had a higher total phenolic content (6.46 mg gallic acid/g) and antioxidant capacities in terms of DPPH (15.60 mg Trolox/g) and ABTS (28.58 mg Trolox/g) assays. Quercitrin (44.54-64.68 μg/g) and cinnamic acid (27.48-31.40 μg/g) were the most abundant phenolics in all carob powder samples determined by liquid chromatography. The bioaccessibility of only ferulic acid (108%) had increased after digestion of the CG carob powder. Vibratory grinding (VG-4 and VG-8) improved the bioaccessibility of cinnamic acid (86-87%), vanillic acid (87-95%), quercitrin (33-34%), and naringenin (19-22%). A better bioaccessibility of phenolic constituents was observed for vibratory ground carob powder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies report the monitoring of catechins in tea samples by chromatographic techniques. Unfortunately, only a small number of screening assays for catechins exist as a result of the complexity of authentic standards for the respective calibration curves. In the present study, a single reference (SR) exhaustive assay for the simultaneous quantification of tea-derived catechins by liquid chromatography (LC) with photodiode array and fluorescence detectors based on relative molar sensitivity (RMS) was developed as a screening assay of common tea samples without respective calibration curves using authentic standards. RESULTS Three original SR standards were proposed based on flavonoid structures, evaluated by quantitative 1 H-NMR based on an indirect standard (1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl) benzene-d4 ) and successfully separated in a LC chromatogram. In tea samples with these added SR calculated based on RMS, the concentrations of eight tea-derived catechins could be measured with a relative SD of < 8.5% by a single LC run. CONCLUSION This LC screening assay based on RMS allows reliable quantification without the requirement for respective calibration curves using authentic standards. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Among non-communicable diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in global communities. By 2030, CVD-related deaths are projected to reach a global rise of 25 million. Obesity, smoking, alcohol, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and hyperhomocysteinemia are several known risk factors for CVDs. Elevated homocysteine is tightly related to CVDs through multiple mechanisms, including inflammation of the vascular endothelium. The strategies for appropriate management of CVDs are constantly evolving; medicinal plants have received remarkable attention in recent researches, since these natural products have promising effects on the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases. The effects of nutraceuticals and herbal products on CVD/dyslipidemia have been previously studied. However, to our knowledge, the association between herbal bioactive compounds and homocysteine has not been reviewed in details. Thus, the main objective of this study is to review the efficacy of bioactive natural compounds on homocysteine levels according to clinical trials and animal studies. RESULTS Based on animal studies, black and green tea, cinnamon, resveratrol, curcumin, garlic extract, ginger, and soy significantly reduced the homocysteine levels. According to the clinical trials, curcumin and resveratrol showed favorable effects on serum homocysteine. In conclusion, this review highlighted the beneficial effects of medicinal plants as natural, inexpensive, and accessible agents on homocysteine levels based on animal studies. Nevertheless, the results of the clinical trials were not uniform, suggesting that more well-designed trials are warranted.

Abstract
A comprehensive method for the evaluation of Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) was established by the quantitative analysis of multiple components by single marker (QAMS), fingerprint, similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and factor analysis (FA) based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A total of 27 common peaks were identified in the standard fingerprint of 20 batches of AS from different regions in China, of which 8 peaks were identified as protocatechuic acid, syringin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, eleutheroside E, hyperoside, isofrqxidin, and acacetin, and the concentrations of these eight components were determined simultaneously by QAMS. The results showed that the QAMS method was effective and feasible compared with the external standard method (ESM) (RD < 3.3 %, P ≤ 0.01). Sample 1 (S1) was used as the reference chromatogram, the similarity of other samples was between 0.765 and 0.968. Through HCA, AS could be mainly divided into two production areas, the north Liaoning (including Liaoning) and the south Liaoning areas. Furthermore, FA showed that the quality of AS in the north Liaoning area was better than that in the south Liaoning area. In summary, the method established in this study can comprehensively and systematically evaluate quality differences in AS samples, and may be used to help to improve the quality control of AS.

Abstract
Phenolic composition of green tea (Camellia sinensis) varies according to manufacturing processes that result in deglycosylation of glycosylated phenolics and condensation, epimerization, and degalloylation of flavan-3-ols (catechins). Ambiguous phenolic assignments based on UV absorbance alone can occur when the chromatographic peaks overlapped slightly. We established an improved method using an HPLC–UV coupled with a single-quadrupole MS detector (MS1) that can reject false UV peaks after checking the preceding MS1 peaks. Adjusted UV data coded by the Python algorithm were deployed to compare tea phenolics. Performance validation of the MS1 and UV analysis methods for 19 phenolics revealed a sensitivity of 0.17 and 0.47 pmol/injection, limit of detection of 15 and 33 μg/L, limit of quantification of 50 and 110 μg/L, intra-day precision of 5% and 1% relative standard deviation, and trueness of 83–135% and 97–100%, respectively. Our results suggest that the HPLC–UV–MS1 method, which is a low operational cost method, potentially provides the precise phenolic composition of teas.

Abstract
The catechin content and antioxidant properties of various Camellia sinensis twig extracts, including a water extract (WE), 10% ethanol extract (10% EE), 50% ethanol extract (50% EE), and 95% ethanol extract (95% EE) were investigated. The 50% EE had the highest total phenolic content (161.3 ± 8.5 mg gallic acid equivalents/L) and total flavonoid content (278.9 ± 12.2 mg quercetin equivalents/L). High-performance liquid chromatography analysis suggested that epigallocatechin gallate and epigallocatechin were the predominant catechins in the twig extracts. The relative concentrations of six catechins isolated from the extracts were: 50% EE > 10% EE > WE > 95% EE. The 50% EE showed free radical-scavenging activity. The concentration of dry matter of 50% EE required to scavenge 50% of ABTS radicals was 102.8 ± 4.2 μg/mL. These results suggest that 50% EE can potentially be used as a source of catechins.

Abstract
The evaluation of tea quality tended to be subjective and empirical by human panel tests currently. A convenient analytical approach without human involvement was developed for the quality assessment of tea with great significance. In this study, near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with multiple decision tree methods was utilized as an objective analysis tool for delineating black tea quality and rank. Data fusion that integrated texture features based on gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and short-wave near-infrared spectral features were as the target characteristic information for modeling. Three different types of supervised decision tree algorithms (fine tree, medium tree, and coarse tree) were proposed for the comparison of the modeling effect. The results indicated that the performance of models was enhanced by the multiple perception feature fusion. The fine tree model based on data fusion obtained the best predictive performance, and the correct classification rate (CCR) of evaluating black tea quality was 93.13% in the prediction process. This work demonstrated that HSI coupled with intelligence algorithms as a rapid and effective strategy could be successfully applied to accurately identify the rank quality of black tea.

Abstract
The popular beverage green tea possesses chemopreventive activity against various types of tumors. However, the effects of its chemopreventive effect on hematological malignancies have not been defined. In the present study, we evaluated antitumor efficacies of a specific green tea, sencha tea, on sensitive and multidrug-resistant leukemia and a panel of nine multiple myelomas (MM) cell lines. We found that sencha extracts induced cytotoxicity in leukemic cells and MM cells to different extents, yet its effect on normal cells was limited. Furthermore, sencha extracts caused G2/M and G0/G1 phase arrest during cell cycle progression in CCRF/CEM and KMS-12-BM cells, respectively. Specifically, sencha-MeOH/H2O extracts induced apoptosis, ROS, and MMP collapse on both CCRF/CEM and KMS-12-BM cells. The analysis with microarray and COMPARE in 53 cell lines of the NCI panel revealed diverse functional groups, including cell morphology, cellular growth and proliferation, cell cycle, cell death, and survival, which were closely associated with anti-tumor effects of sencha tea. It is important to note that PI3K/Akt and NF-κB pathways were the top two dominant networks by ingenuity pathway analysis. We demonstrate here the multifactorial modes of action of sencha tea leading to chemopreventive effects of sencha tea against cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preprocessing technologies of fresh tea leaves have a great influence on tea quality. A multifunctional preprocessing device for tea raw materials has been designed and utilized as a novel item of equipment to synchronously meet the process needs of spreading of green tea, withering of black tea and shaking of oolong tea. RESULTS The preprocessing parameters of fresh tea leaves for spreading of green tea, withering of black tea and shaking of oolong tea were optimized by orthogonal experiments. Sensory assessment combined with statistical tools was employed as an analytical method to evaluate the pretreatment effect of processing different sorts of tea. The range analysis and variance analysis of tea sensory evaluation combined with chemical components (total polyphenols, free amino acids and soluble sugar) showed that A3 B2 C3 (70%, 25 °C, 8 h), A1 B3 C1 (60%, 28 °C, 18 h) and A1 B1 C3 (5 min, 20 °C, discontinuous leaf turning c) were considered to be the optimum schemes for the best pretreatment conditions of the above three major processing types of tea, respectively. The verification experiment of the proposed schemes was performed with satisfactory performance. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that a multifunctional preprocessing device for fresh tea leaves can be successfully applied to simultaneously estimate spreading of green tea, withering of black tea and shaking of oolong tea. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
A type of molecular-imprinted polymer with magnetic molybdenum disulfide as a base and deep eutectic solvent as a functional monomer (Fe3O4@MoS2@DES-MIP) was prepared with surface molecular imprinting method. It was applied as the adsorbent for the selective recognition and separation of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in green tea in the process of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The structure of Fe3O4@MoS2@DES-MIP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption properties and selective recognition ability on (-)-epigallocatechin gallate and the other four structural analogues were examined and compared. The results show that the polymer has excellent selective recognition ability for (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, and its adsorption capacity was much higher than that of structural analogues. The Fe3O4@MoS2@DES-MIP not only has the special recognition ability to template a molecule, but also can be separated by magnets with high separation efficiency and can be used in MSPE.

Abstract
Structural investigations, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are performed on tea catechins, including 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA), L-theanine (Thea), caffeine (CAF), theobromine (TB), theophylline (TP), catechin (C), epicatechin (EC), gallocatechin (GC), epigallocatechin (EGC), catechin gallate (CG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), gallocatechin gallate (GCG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). With an identified lowest energy conformer of investigated molecules, FTIR and FT-Raman spectra have been assigned according to DFT calculations in the way of B3LYP/6-31 + G (d, p). Normal spectra of these catechin powders are also measured by Raman spectrometers. There is a kind of everlasting correlation between experimental results and theoretical data. And our research has also obtained a clear evidence for reliable assignments of vibrational bands, bringing great feasibility to the rapid tea catechin detection.

Abstract
Tea cultivation and utilization dates back to antiquity. Today it is the most widely consumed beverage on earth due to its pleasant taste and several beneficial health properties attributed to specific metabolites. Metabolomics has a tremendous potential to correlate tea metabolites with taste and health properties in humans. Our review on the current application of metabolomics in the science of tea suggests that metabolomics is a promising frontier in the evaluation of tea quality, identification of functional genes responsible for key metabolites, investigation of their metabolic regulation, and pathway analysis in the tea plant. Furthermore, the challenges, possible solutions, and the prospects of metabolomics in tea science are reviewed.

Abstract
Though bioaccessibility commonly recognized as a guideline for risk assessment is closely related with pollution occurrence and chemical species of compounds, the mechanistic links are barely evaluated particularly for widespread polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil. With the biomimetic extraction of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (β-HPCD), the temporal and spatial influences of soil properties, aging and structural characteristics, e.g. polarity of PCB congeners on bioaccessibility were investigated for PCBs. Sensitive variation of bioaccessibility with aging, soil organic matter (SOM), particle size and soil moisture were clearly evidenced for different PCB congeners. Due to aging, the bioaccessibility decreased in the long term after stabilization for 36 h. In concert with the first-order kinetics, the decay rates of bioaccessibility were shown with congener-specificity and were well correlated with dipoles of PCBs. The increment of SOM diminished the bioaccessibility for the strengthened adsorption while the increased particle size and soil moisture elevated it possibly due to the less adsorption on soil particles and more accommodation of PCBs in soil pore water. Except the positive correlations with particle size, soil moisture and dipole moment, the greater dependency on aging and SOM was highlighted for bioaccessibility by partial least squares (PLS) analysis. The mutual relationship with influential factors was quantitatively formulated for accelerative prediction of bioaccessibility, and the comparative evaluation and detailed insights into the mechanistic links would thus help enhance the precise determination of bioaccessibility and risk assessment of PCBs in soil.

Abstract
The application of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to separate explosive chemicals was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The explosive ingredients including NG, RDX, HMX and TNT were assigned as solutes, while methanol (CH3OH) and acetonitrile (CH3CN) were assigned as solvents in the solution system. The polymeric-molecular siloxanes (SiC8) and poly-1,2-methylenedioxy-4-propenyl benzene (PISAF) compounds were treated as stationary phase in the simulation. The simulation results showed that the different species of explosive ingredients were separated successfully in the solutions by each of the constructed stationary phase of SiC8 and PISAF after a total simulation time of 12.0 ps approximately, which were consistent with the experimental analysis of HPLC spectra. The origin for the separation was found due to the electrostatic interactions between polymer and explosives.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the potential neuroprotective effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on radiation-induced cell death and damage in the hippocampus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult male Wister rats received oral treatment with EGCG at doses of 2.5 and 5 mg/kg/d for 3 d before 4 Gy γ irradiation. RESULTS The pretreatment of irradiated rats with EGCG significantly ameliorated the increased plasma levels of homocysteine, amyloid β, TNF-α and IL-6 levels and the decrease of dopamine and serotonin. Pretreatment with EGCG also significantly ameliorated the irradiation-induced increase in the 4-HNE and protein carbonyl levels and the decreased antioxidants including glutathione level, and the activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in the hippocampus. EGCG treatment prior to radiation exposure protected against DNA damage and apoptosis in the hippocampus. The increase in the levels of p53, Cytochrome-c, Bax and caspases 3 and 9 in the hippocampus were significantly ameliorated with a significant increase in Bcl-2. These changes were supported by marked protection of the dentate gyrus that exhibited a similar histological structure of the control animals. CONCLUSIONS EGCG can attenuate the severity of radiation-induced damage and cell death in hippocampus recommending polyphenols as successful option for protecting against radiation-induced hippocampal damage.
