Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major catechin in green tea, exhibits potent antioxidant and disease-preventive properties, but its application is limited by poor stability and bioavailability. This study aimed to address these challenges by preparing and characterizing three EGCG-loaded nanoparticles: chitosan-EGCG-tripolyphosphate nanoparticles (CE-NPs), β-cyclodextrin-EGCG (BE-NPs), and EGCG-nanostructured lipid carriers (NE-NPs). BE-NPs exhibited the highest loading performance and retention rate under thermal environment (89.78 % after 10 h at 80 °C). NE-NPs had the highest EGCG stability in alkaline condition (45 % after 4 h at pH 7.4). Compared to free EGCG, all NPs significantly improved in vitro bioaccessibility following incubation in simulated gastrointestinal digestion for 4 h; BE-NPs enhanced oral bioavailability by 1.71 times in vivo. Additionally, CE-NPs and NE-NPs increased the relative abundance of Faecalibaculum, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Bifidobacterium in the colons of Sprague-Dawley rats. These findings suggest that BE-NPs are a promising nano-delivery system for enhancing EGCG stability and bioavailability in healthy organisms.

Abstract
Catechins, widely used as functional ingredients and health supplements, face usage limitations due to their poor stability and bioaccessibility. In this study, encapsulation techniques including nanoemulsion and foam-mat freeze-drying were utilized to enhance the stability and bioaccessibility of catechins. Catechins nanoemulsion (CaNE) was ultrasonically fabricated and foam-mat freeze-dried CaNE (FD-CaNE) was prepared by mixing with a blend of maltodextrin and gum arabic as wall material and foaming with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose before freeze drying. Unencapsulated catechins (UN-Ca), CaNE, and FD-CaNE were fortified in pasteurized milk to improve its functional properties. FD-CaNE was shown to be the best at preserving total flavonoid content (TFC) and catechins' antioxidant activity (AA), retarding lipid oxidation, and inhibiting bacterial growth. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion test, digested CaNE and FD-CaNE showed better bioaccessibility of catechins by having higher percentage of TFC recovery and AA than the digested UN-Ca. This study has proved that FD-CaNE can be used as bioactive food ingredients to enhance the stability and bioaccessibility of catechins in food matrices and digestive system, and to improve quality and shelf life of catechins-fortified milk.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions, which are characterized by their nanometer-scale droplets, have gained significant attention in different fields, such as medicine, food, cosmetics, and agriculture, because of their unique properties. With an increasing number of countries engaging in research on nanoemulsions, interest in their properties, preparation methods, and applications has increased. Hence, tracing the relevant research on nanoemulsions published in the past ten years on a global scale, by conducting data mining and visualization analysis on a sufficiently large text dataset through bibliometrics, sorting out and summarizing certain indicators, the development history, research status and research hotspots in the field of nanoemulsions can be clearly revealed, providing reference value and significance for subsequent research. This bibliometric review examines the research landscape of nanoemulsions from 2013-2023 via the SCI-E and SSCI databases, providing insights into the current status, hotspots, and future trends of this field. To offer a comprehensive overview, this analysis includes publication counts, author keywords, institutional contributions, research areas, prolific authors, highly cited papers and hot research papers. The findings reveal that China led in nanoemulsions research, followed by USA, India, and Brazil, with the University of Massachusetts emerging as a key player with the highest average number of citations per article (ACPP) and h-index. Food Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and the Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology are among the top journals publishing in this area. Chemistry, pharmacology, and pharmacy emerged as the primary research domains, with McClements DJ as the most prolific and influential author. In keyword analysis, essential oil nanoemulsions are currently the main preparation direction, and various characteristics of nanoemulsions, such as their bioavailability, stability, biocompatibility, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties, have also been studied extensively. Research hotspots are focused mostly on the development of new applications and technologies for nanoemulsions.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the primary polyphenol in green tea, is renowned for its potent antioxidant properties. EGCG interacts with various cellular targets, inhibiting cancer cell proliferation through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest induction, while also modulating metabolic pathways. Studies have demonstrated its potential in addressing cancer development, obesity, and diabetes. Given the rising prevalence of metabolic diseases and cancers, EGCG is increasingly recognized as a promising therapeutic agent. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest findings on the effects of both free and nano-encapsulated EGCG on mechanisms involved in the management and prevention of hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The review highlights EGCG role in modulating key signaling pathways, enhancing bioavailability through nano-formulations, and its potential applications in clinical settings.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome, a global health concern, is characterized by visceral obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Current therapeutic options are limited by their varying efficacy and significantly adverse side effects, fueling interest in natural products, particularly plant extracts, as potential preventive interventions for high-risk individuals. This review examines the role of plant extracts in mitigating metabolic syndrome risk factors, addressing safety concerns and exploring associated technological advancements. The literature indicates that plant extracts hold promise for addressing the pathophysiology of metabolic dysfunction. However, challenges such as safety concerns, a lack of standardized regulation, and potential drug-plant interactions currently limit their clinical application. Rigorous, long-term clinical trials are necessary to confirm the efficacy and safety of plant extracts before they can be established as a preventive strategy for managing metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Green tea possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antimicrobial activities, reduces body weight, and slows down aging. These effects are primarily attributed to catechins contained in green tea leaves, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate. However, in humans, the realization of green tea's beneficial effects is limited. In order to summarize and critically analyze the available scientific information about green tea's health benefits and issues related to its use, we conducted an in-depth literature review in scientific databases. A number of in vitro studies reported that green tea catechins modulate various signaling pathways in cells, which is thought to underlie their beneficial effects. However, data on the effects of catechins in humans are scarce, which is partly due to their low stability and oral bioavailability. Furthermore, catechins may also participate in pharmacokinetic interactions when co-administered with certain drugs such as anticancer agents, drugs for cardiovascular diseases, immunosuppressors, etc. As a result, adverse drug reactions or therapy failure may occur. In conclusion, over the years, various approaches have been investigated to optimize catechin intake and to achieve beneficial effects in humans, but to date, the use of catechins for prophylaxis or disease treatment remains limited. Therefore, future studies regarding the possibilities of catechins administration are needed.

Abstract
Various lipid and biopolymer-based nanocarriers have been developed to encapsulate food ingredients. The selection of nanocarrier type, preparation techniques, and loading methods should consider the compatibility of nutrient properties, nanocarrier composition, and product requirements. This review focuses on the loading methods for hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances, along with a detailed exploration of nanocarrier categorization, composition, and preparation methods. Both lipid-based and biopolymer-based nanoparticles exhibit the capability to encapsulate hydrophilic or hydrophobic substances. Liposomes and nanoemulsions allow simultaneous encapsulation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ingredients, while solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers are suited for hydrophobic ingredients. The three-dimensional network structure of nanogels can efficiently load hydrophilic substances, while the functional groups in polysaccharides improve the loading capacity of hydrophobic substances through intermolecular interactions. As for protein nanoparticles, the selection of proteins with solubility characteristics analogous to the bioactives is crucial to achieve high encapsulation efficiency.

Abstract
The current review of tea and its parts is focused on the antibacterial properties, considering the possible applications and modes of action against bacterial illnesses. It shows the backdrop of antibiotic resistance and the huge demand for antibacterial treatments out there. From the interactions with bacterial components, the theory presented that tea polyphenols are antibacterial and therefore would be a substitute or supplementary therapy to the usual antibiotics. The study highlighted the role of tea polyphenols as potential antibacterial compounds that may interact with various bacterial components and different polyphenolic compounds occurring in tea. Future research directions may be directed toward testing more plant-based sources for antibacterial properties, in vivo validation of the studies, and possible synergistic effects with classical antibiotics. By addressing the controversies and disagreements involved, the present understanding of the topic of tea's antibacterial properties and enable the entry of new ways for fighting microorganisms resistant to antibiotics. In conclusion, this review adds to the growing body of evidence regarding the antimicrobial properties of tea and emphasizes the need for further studies that will allow the full exploitation of its therapeutic potential for countering the rising problem of antibiotic resistance in healthcare.

Abstract
AbstractEncapsulation is a drug or food ingredient loaded-delivery system that entraps active components, protecting them from decomposition/degradation throughout the processing and storage stages and facilitates their delivery to the target tissue/organ, improving their bioactivities. The application of this technology is expanding gradually from pharmaceuticals to the food industry, since dietary bioactive ingredients, including polyphenols, are susceptible to environmental and/or gastrointestinal conditions. Polyphenols are the largest group of plants' secondary metabolites, with a wide range of biological effects. Literature data have indicated their potential in the prevention of several disorders and pathologies, ranging from simpler allergic conditions to more complex metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the promising health effects in preclinical studies, the clinical use of dietary polyphenols is still very limited due to their low bioaccessibility and/or bioavailability. Encapsulation can be successfully employed in the development of polyphenol-based functional foods, which may improve their bioaccessibility and/or bioavailability. Moreover, encapsulation can also aid in the targeted delivery of polyphenols and may prevent any possible adverse events. For the encapsulation of bioactive ingredients, several techniques are applied such as emulsion phase separation, emulsification/internal gelation, film formation, spray drying, spray-bed-drying, fluid-bed coating, spray-chilling, spray-cooling, and melt injection. The present review aims to throw light on the existing literature highlighting the possibility and clinical benefits of encapsulated polyphenols in health and disease. However, the clinical data is still very scarce and randomized clinical trials are needed before any conclusion is drawn.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the principal catechin in green tea, exhibits diverse therapeutic properties. However, its clinical efficacy is hindered by poor stability and low bioavailability. This study investigated solid particle-in-oil-in-water (S/O/W) emulsions stabilized by whey protein isolate (WPI) and sodium caseinate (NaCas) as carriers to enhance the bioavailability and intestinal absorption of EGCG. Molecular docking revealed binding interactions between EGCG and these macromolecules. The WPI- and NaCas-stabilized emulsions exhibited high encapsulation efficiencies (>80%) and significantly enhanced the bioaccessibility of EGCG by 64% compared to free EGCG after simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Notably, the NaCas emulsion facilitated higher intestinal permeability of EGCG across Caco-2 monolayers, attributed to the strong intermolecular interactions between caseins and EGCG. Furthermore, the emulsions protected Caco-2 cells against oxidative stress by suppressing intracellular reactive oxygen species generation. These findings demonstrate the potential of WPI- and NaCas-stabilized emulsions as effective delivery systems to improve the bioavailability, stability, and bioactivity of polyphenols like EGCG, enabling their applications in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Encapsulation of plant polyphenols with micro-/nano-carriers for enhanced bioavailability has been well documented, but the preparation of these carriers and subsequent loading of polyphenols is a multiple process, which is generally complicated with potentially unexpected negative effects on the bioactivity of the polyphenols. Here, we reported a convenient method to assemble carrier-free polyphenol nanoparticles (NPs) based on oxidative coupling polymerization. The effectiveness was assessed with five different polyphenols including pyrocatechol (PY), catechin (CA), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), tannic acid (TA), and proanthocyanidin (PC). The structural characteristics of these assembled nanoparticles (PY NPs, CA NPs, EG NPs, TA NPs, and PC NPs) were systematically analyzed with dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). All NPs were colloidally stable with varying NaCl concentrations from 0 to 300 mM, were acid-resistant and alkali-intolerant, and were suitable for oral administration. An array of antioxidant assays further confirmed the superior antioxidant capabilities of NPs over Trolox and polyphenol monomers, indicating that the oxidative polymerization of polyphenols did not compromise the polyphenol activity of NPs. The in vitro simulated digestion studies validated that these responsive NPs were actually gastrointestinal pH-responsive and applicable to the gastrointestinal physiological environment. The bioaccessibility assessments by using a static in vitro digestion model revealed that better results were achieved with NPs than polyphenol monomers, with TA NPs showing about 1.5-fold higher bioaccessibility than other polyphenol nanoparticles. The present study with five polyphenols demonstrated that the oxidative polymerization of polyphenols provides an effective platform to assemble various carrier-free NPs with enhanced antioxidant activity, favorable stability, and improved bioaccessibility, which could be used promisingly as a functional food ingredient in food matrices or as oral drug delivery candidates for helping to manage human health or treating various gastrointestinal disorders in both the pharmaceutical and nutritional fields.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPs) are the most important active component of tea and have become a research focus among natural products, thanks to their antioxidant, lipid-lowering, liver-protecting, anti-tumor, and other biological activities. Polyphenols can interact with other food components, such as protein, polysaccharides, lipids, and metal ions to further improve the texture, flavor, and sensory quality of food, and are widely used in food fields, such as food preservatives, antibacterial agents and food packaging. However, the instability of TPs under conditions such as light or heat and their low bioavailability in the gastrointestinal environment also hinder their application in food. In this review, we summarized the health benefits of TPs. In order to better use TPs in food, we analyzed the form and mechanism of interaction between TPs and main food components, such as polysaccharides and proteins. Moreover, we reviewed research into optimizing the applications of TPs in food by bio-based delivery systems, such as liposomes, nanoemulsions, and nanoparticles, so as to improve the stability and bioactivity of TPs in food application. As an effective active ingredient, TPs have great potential to be applied in functional food to produce benefits for human health.

Abstract
The poor biostability and bioavailability of proanthocyanidins limit their application. In this study, it was hypothesized that encapsulation in lecithin-based nanoliposomes using ultrasonic technology improves the above properties. Based on preliminary experiments, the effects of lecithin mass ratio (1-9%, wt.), pH (3.2-6.8), ultrasonic power (0-540 W), and time (0-10 min) on biostability and bioavailability of purified kiwi leaves proanthocyanidins (PKLPs) were determined. Nanoliposomes prepared optimally with lecithin (5%, wt.), pH = 3.2, ultrasonic power (270 W), and time (5 min) demonstrated a significantly (p < 0.05) improved physicochemical stability, homogeneity, and high encapsulation efficiency (73.84%) relative to control. The PKLPs bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion increased by 2.28-3.07-fold, with a remarkable sustained release and delivery to the small intestine. Similar results were obtained by in vivo analyses, showing over 200% increase in PKLPs bioaccessibility compared to the control. Thus, PKLPs-loaded nanoliposomes are promising candidates for foods and supplements for novel applications.

Abstract
Polyphenols derived from fruits, vegetables, and plants are bioactive compounds potentially beneficial to human health. Notably, compounds such as quercetin, curcumin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), and resveratrol have been highlighted as antiproliferative agents for cancer. Due to their low solubility and limited bioavailability, some alternative nanotechnologies have been applied to encapsulate these compounds, aiming to improve their efficacy against cancer. In this comprehensive review, we evaluate the main nanotechnology approaches to improve the therapeutic potential of polyphenols against cancer using in vitro studies and in vivo preclinical models, highlighting recent advancements in the field. It was found that polymeric nanomaterials, lipid-based nanomaterials, inorganic nanomaterials, and carbon-based nanomaterials are the most used classes of nanocarriers for encapsulating polyphenols. These delivery systems exhibit enhanced antitumor activity and pro-apoptotic effects, particularly against breast, lung, prostate, cervical, and colorectal cancer cells, surpassing the performance of free bioactive compounds. Preclinical trials in xenograft animal models have revealed decreased tumor growth after treatment with polyphenol-loaded delivery systems. Moreover, the interaction of polyphenol co-delivery systems and polyphenol-drug delivery systems is a promising approach to increase anticancer activity and decrease chemotherapy side effects. These innovative approaches hold significant implications for the advancement of clinical cancer research.

Abstract
Contemporary scientific findings revealed that our daily food stuffs are enriched by encrypted bioactive peptides (BPs), evolved by peptide linkage of amino acids or encrypted from the native protein structures. Remarkable to these BPs lies in their potential health benefiting biological activities to serve as nutraceuticals or a lead addition to the development of functional foods. The biological activities of BPs vary depending on the sequence as well as amino acid composition. Existing database records approximately 3000 peptide sequences which possess potential biological activities such as antioxidants, antihypertensive, antithrombotic, anti-adipogenics, anti-microbials, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancerous. The growing evidences suggest that BPs have very low toxicity, higher accuracy, less tissue accretion, and are easily degraded in the disposed environment. BPs are nowadays evolved as biologically active molecules with potential scope to reduce microbial contamination as well as ward off oxidation of foods, amend diverse range of human diseases to enhance the overall quality of human life. Against the clinical and health perspectives of BPs, this review aimed to elaborate current evolution of nutritional potential of BPs, studies pertaining to overcome limitations with respect to special focus on emerging extraction, protection and delivery tools of BPs. In addition, the nano-delivery mechanism of BP and its clinical significance is detailed. The aim of current review is to augment the research in the field of BPs production, identification, characterisation and to speed up the investigation of the incredible potentials of BPs as potential nutritional and functional food ingredient.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is an advanced field that has remarkable nutraceutical and food applications. Phyto-bioactive compounds (PBCs) play critical roles in promoting health and disease treatment. However, PBCs generally encounter several limitations that delay their widespread application. For example, most PBCs have low aqueous solubility, poor biostability, poor bioavailability, and a lack of target specificity. Moreover, the high concentrations of effective PBC doses also limit their application. As a result, encapsulating PBCs into an appropriate nanocarrier may increase their solubility and biostability and protect them from premature degradation. Moreover, nanoencapsulation could improve absorption and prolong circulation with a high opportunity for targeted delivery that may decrease unwanted toxicity. This review addresses the main parameters, variables, and barriers that control and affect oral PBC delivery. Moreover, this review discusses the potential role of biocompatible and biodegradable nanocarriers in improving the water solubility, chemical stability, bioavailability, and specificity/selectivity of PBCs.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has gained considerable attention owing to its beneficial properties. However, its application as a functional food is restricted due to its instability and low bioavailability. In the present study, a food-derived nanoparticle system based on type A gelatin/γ-PGA was developed to preserve and deliver EGCG. The EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles had a particle size of 155.1 ± 7.3 nm with a zeta potential of -23.9 ± 0.9 mV. Moreover, the EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles enhanced the long-term storage stability and sustained antioxidant activity of EGCG compared to EGCG/gelatin nanoparticles. The nanoparticles protected EGCG in simulated gastric fluid containing pepsin while releasing it in simulated intestinal fluid. Additionally, the amount of EGCG transported in the Caco-2 monolayers treated with EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles was three times higher than that of free EGCG, which might be related to the paracellular pathway and endocytosis. These results suggest that EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles might be an effective delivery vehicle for EGCG, enhancing its potential applications in the functional food field.

Abstract
Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) are a new type of nanomaterial self-assembled by metal ions and polyphenols that have been developed rapidly in recent decades. They have been widely investigated, in the biomedical field, for their environmental friendliness, high quality, good bio-adhesiveness, and bio-compatibility, playing a crucial role in tumor treatment. As the most common subclass of the MPNs family, Fe-based MPNs are most frequently used in chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and phototherapy (PTT), where they are often used as nanocoatings to encapsulate drugs, as well as good Fenton reagents and photosensitizers to improve tumor therapeutic efficiency substantially. In this review, strategies for preparing various types of Fe-based MPNs are first summarized. We highlight the advantages of Fe-based MPNs under the different species of polyphenol ligands for their application in tumor treatments. Finally, some current problems and challenges of Fe-based MPNs, along with a future perspective on biomedical applications, are discussed.

Abstract
Formulations based on emulsions for enhancing hydrophobic and lipophilic drug delivery and its bioavailability have attracted a lot of interest. As potential therapeutic agents, they are integrated with inert oils, emulsions, surfactant solubility, liposomes, etc.; drug delivering systems that use emulsion formations have emerged as a unique and commercially achievable accession to override the issue of less oral bioavailability in connection with hydrophobic and lipophilic drugs. As an ideal isotropic oil mixture of surfactants and co-solvents, it self-emulsifies and forms fine oil in water emulsions when acquainted with aqueous material. As droplets rapidly pass through the stomach, fine oil promotes the vast spread of the drug all over the GI (gastrointestinal tract) and conquers the slow disintegration commonly seen in solid drug forms. The current status of advancement in technologies for drug carrying has promulgated the expansion of innovative drug carriers for the controlled release of self-emulsifying pellets, tablets, capsules, microspheres, etc., which got a boost for drug delivery usage with self-emulsification. The present review article includes various kinds of formulations based on the size of particles and excipients utilized in emulsion formation for drug delivery mechanisms and the increase in the bioavailability of lipophilic/hydrophobic drugs in the present time.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPs) are important bioactive compounds in tea and have excellent physiological regulation functions. However, the extraction and purification of TPs are key technologies affecting their further application, and the chemical instability, poor bioavailability of TPs are major challenges for researchers. In the past decade, therefore, research and development of advanced carrier systems for the delivery of TPs has been greatly promoted to improve their poor stability and poor bioavailability. In this review, the properties and function of TPs are introduced, and the recent advances in the extraction and purification technologies are systematically summarized. Particularly, the intelligent delivery of TPs via novel nano-carriers is critically reviewed, and the application of TPs nano-delivery system in medical field and food industry is also described. Finally, the main limitations, current challenges and future perspectives are highlighted in order to provide research ideas for exploiting nano-delivery carriers and their application in TPs.

Abstract
Antioxidants in sports exercise training remain a debated research topic. Plant-derived polyphenol supplements are frequently used by athletes to reduce the negative effects of exercise-induced oxidative stress, accelerate the recovery of muscular function, and enhance performance. These processes can be efficiently modulated by antioxidant supplementation. The existing literature has failed to provide unequivocal evidence that dietary polyphenols should be promoted specifically among athletes. This narrative review summarizes the current knowledge regarding polyphenols' bioavailability, their role in exercise-induced oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and supplementation strategies in athletes. Overall, we draw attention to the paucity of available evidence suggesting that most antioxidant substances are beneficial to athletes. Additional research is necessary to reveal more fully their impact on exercise-induced oxidative stress and athletes' antioxidant status, as well as optimal dosing methods.

Abstract
Globally, aquatic processing industries pay great attention to the production of aquatic proteins for the fulfillment of the nutritive requirements of human beings. Aquatic protein can replace terrestrial animal protein due to its high protein content, complete amino acids, unique flavor, high quality and nutritional value, and requirements of religious preferences. Due to the superior functional properties, an aquatic protein based delivery system has been proposed as a novel candidate for improving the absorption and bioavailability of bioactive substances, which might have potential applications in the food industry. This review outlines the extraction techniques for and functional properties of aquatic proteins, summarizes the potential modification technologies for interaction with polyphenols, and focuses on the application of aquatic-derived protein in delivery systems as well as their interaction with the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The extraction techniques for aquatic proteins include water, salt, alkali/acid, enzyme, organic solvent, and ultrasound-assisted extraction. The quality and functionality of the aquatic proteins could be improved after modification with polyphenols via covalent or noncovalent interactions. Furthermore, some aquatic protein based delivery systems, such as emulsions, gels, films, and microcapsules, have been reported to enhance the absorption and bioavailability of bioactive substances by in vitro GIT, cell, and in vivo animal models. By promoting comprehensive understanding, this review is expected to provide a real-time reference for developing functional foods and potential food delivery systems based on aquatic-derived proteins.

Abstract
Bioactive components such as polyphenolics, flavonoids, bioactive peptides, pigments, and essential fatty acids were known to ward off some deadliest diseases. Nutraceuticals are those beneficial compounds that may be food or part of food that has come up with medical or health benefits. Nanoencapsulation and nanofabricated delivery systems are an imminent approach in the field of food sciences. The sustainable fabrication of nutraceuticals and biocompatible active components indisputably enhances the food grade and promotes good health. Nanofabricated delivery systems include carbohydrates-based, lipids (solid and liquid), and proteins-based delivery systems. Solid nano-delivery systems include lipid nanoparticles. Liquid nano-delivery systems include nanoliposomes and nanoemulsions. Physicochemical properties of nanoparticles such as size, charge, hydrophobicity, and targeting molecules affect the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of nano delivery systems. Advance research in toxicity studies is necessary to ensure the safety of the nanofabricated delivery systems, as the safety of nano delivery systems for use in food applications is unknown. Therefore, improved nanotechnology could play a pivotal role in developing functional foods, a contemporary concept assuring the consumers to provide programmed, high-priced, and high-quality research toward nanofabricated delivery systems.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of carrier oils on the in vitro and in vivo bioavailability of PTE encapsulated in scallop gonad protein isolates (SGPIs)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) conjugate stabilized emulsions. The SGPIs-EGCG stabilized emulsions were subjected to an in vitro simulated digestion, and the resulting corn oil and MCT micelles were used to evaluate the PTE transportation using the Caco-2 cell model. Both emulsions remarkably improved the bioaccessibility of PTE in the micelle phase. Nevertheless, corn oil emulsions increased trans-enterocyte transportation of PTE more efficiently than MCT emulsions. Furthermore, the maximum plasma concentrations of PTE and its metabolites in mice fed with PTE emulsions were prominently higher than those in mice fed with PTE solution, while the in vivo metabolic patterns of PTE in different oil-stabilized emulsions were different. Therefore, SGPIs-EGCG stabilized emulsions could enhance the bioavailability of PTE through controlled release, in which corn oil is more suitable than MCT.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the microencapsulation of novel condensed tannins isolated from Periploca angustifolia roots, using β-cyclodextrin macrocyclic oligosaccharides, in order to enhance their antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic potentials. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed that tannin fraction was successfully included into β-cyclodextrin cavities proved with an encapsulation efficacy of 70%. Our in vitro findings highlighted that both pure and encapsulated tannins have efficient inhibition capacities of pancreatic lipase activity. However, the inclusion complex has the greatest, in vivo, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic effects. In fact, results showed that complexed tannins had markedly restored serum lipid biomarkers, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl oxidation, and antioxidant enzyme defense. These findings were additionally confirmed by aortic and myocardial muscle sections of histological examination. Consequently, β-cyclodextrin microencapsulation may be considered as an effective and promising technique for tannin delivery with improved antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic activities.

Abstract
The development of nanotheranostics for precision imaging-guided regulated cell death-mediated synergistic tumor therapy is still challenging. Herein, a novel multifunctional nanotheranostic agent, iRGD-coated maleimide-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid/glycolic acid)-encapsulated hydrophobic gold nanocages (AuNCs) and hydrophilic epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) (PAuE) is developed for multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT)-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. The portions of necroptotic and apoptotic tumor cells were 52.9 and 5.4%, respectively, at 6 h post-incubation after the AuNC-induced mild PTT treatment, whereas they became 14.0 and 46.1% after 24 h, suggesting that the switch of the cell death pathway is a time-dependent process. Mild PTT facilitated the release of EGCG which induces the downregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1α) expression to enhance apoptosis at a later stage, realizing a remarkable tumor growth inhibition in vivo. Moreover, RNA sequence analyses provided insights into the significant changes in genes related to the cross-talk between necroptosis and apoptosis pathways via PAuE upon laser irradiation. In addition, the biodistribution and metabolic pathways of PAuE have been successfully revealed by 3D MSOT. Taken together, this strategy of first combination of EGCG and AuNC-based photothermal agent via triggering necroptosis/apoptosis to downregulate HIF-1α expression in a tumor environment provides a new insight into anti-cancer therapy.

Abstract
In this study, the in vitro bioavailability of rosehip infusion phenolics, mainly catechin, as a response to conventional and non-thermal treatments by combining gastrointestinal digestion and a Caco-2 cell culture model, was investigated. After application of thermal treatment (TT, 85 °C/10 min), high pressure (HPP, 600 MPa/5 min) or pulsed electric field (PEF, 15 kJ/kg) processing, all samples were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Then, the amount of maximum non-toxic digest ratio was determined by the cytotoxicity sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Next, Caco-2 cells were exposed to 1:5 (v/v) times diluted digests in order to simulate the transepithelial transportation of catechin. Results showed that non-thermally processed samples (5.19 and 4.62% for HPP and PEF, respectively) exhibited greater transportation across the epithelial cell layer compared to than that of the TT-treated sample (3.42%). The present study highlighted that HPP and PEF, as non-thermal treatments at optimized conditions for infusions or beverages, can be utilized in order to enhance the nutritional quality of the final products.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking has been responsible for causing many life-threatening diseases such as pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases as well as lung cancer. One of the prominent health implications of cigarette smoking is the oxidative damage of cellular constituents, including proteins, lipids, and DNA. The oxidative damage is caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS, oxidants) present in the aqueous extract of cigarette smoke (CS). In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the potential health benefits of dietary polyphenols as natural antioxidant molecules. Epidemiological studies strongly suggest that long-term consumption of diets (fruits, vegetables, tea, and coffee) rich in polyphenols offer protective effects against the development of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. For instance, green tea has chemopreventive effects against CI-induced lung cancer. Tea might prevent CS-induced oxidative damages in diseases because tea polyphenols, such as catechin, EGCG, etc., have strong antioxidant properties. Moreover, apple polyphenols, including catechin and quercetin, provide protection against CS-induced acute lung injury such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In CS-induced health problems, the antioxidant action is often accompanied by the anti-inflammatory effect of polyphenols. In this narrative review, the CS-induced oxidative damages and the associated health implications/pathological conditions (or diseases) and the role of diets rich in polyphenols and/or dietary polyphenolic compounds against various serious/chronic conditions of human health have been delineated.

Abstract
Food plants have been recognized for their medicinal properties for millennia, a concept supported by epidemiological studies indicating long-term health benefits for people consuming greater amounts of fruits and vegetables. As our technology and instrumentation advance, researchers have the ability to identify promising phytochemicals, and examine their potential benefits, or detriments, to human health. While results from trials investigating single chemical supplementation have sometimes produced negative health results, studies investigating the synergistic action of phytochemicals—either within our diet or as an adjuvant to radiation or chemotherapy—appear promising. Utilizing phytochemicals as synergistic agents may lower the chemotherapeutic doses needed to incur physiological results, while also using chemicals with fewer toxic effects. This review investigates a variety of plant-produced chemicals humans typically ingest, their impacts on overall health patterns, molecular mechanisms associated with their health impacts, and the potential of their synergistic use for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
Objectives Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is a kind of unfermented tea that retains the natural substance in fresh leaves to a great extent. It is regarded as the second most popular drink in the world besides water. In this paper, the phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of green tea are reviewed systematically and comprehensively. Key findings Green tea has been demonstrated to be good for human health. Nowadays, multiple pharmacologically active components have been isolated and identified from green tea, including tea polyphenols, alkaloids, amino acids, polysaccharides, and volatile components. Recent studies have demonstrated that green tea shows versatile pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anticancer, hypoglycemic, antibacterial, antiviral, and neuroprotective. Studies on the toxic effects of green tea extract and its main ingredients have also raised concerns including hepatotoxicity and DNA damage. Summary Green tea can be used to assist the treatment of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, oral cancer, and dermatitis. Consequently, green tea has shown promising practical prospects in health care and disease prevention.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea catechin, has gained the attention of current study due to its excellent health-promoting effects. It possesses anti-obesity, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory activities, and is under extensive investigation in functional foods for improvement. It is susceptible to lower stability, lesser bioavailability, and lower absorption rate due to various environmental, processing, formulations, and gastrointestinal conditions of the human body. Therefore, it is the foremost concern for the researchers to enhance its bioactivity and make it the most suitable therapeutic compound for its clinical applications. In the current review, factors affecting the bioavailability of EGCG and the possible strategies to overcome these issues are reviewed and discussed. This review summarizes structural modifications and delivery through nanoparticle-based approaches including nano-emulsions, encapsulations, and silica-based nanoparticles for effective use of EGCG in functional foods. Moreover, recent advances to enhance EGCG therapeutic efficacy by specifically targeting its molecules to increase its bioavailability and stability are also described. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The main green tea constituent EGCG possesses several health-promoting effects making EGCG a potential therapeutic compound to cure ailments. However, its low stability and bioavailability render its uses in many disorders. Synthesizing EGCG prodrugs by structural modifications helps against its low bioavailability and stability by overcoming premature degradation and lower absorption rate. This review paper summarizes various strategies that benefit EGCG under different physiological conditions. The esterification, nanoparticle approaches, silica-based EGCG-NPs, and EGCG formulations serve as ideal EGCG modification strategies to deliver superior concentrations with lesser toxicity for its efficient penetration and absorption across cells both in vitro and in vivo. As a result of EGCG modifications, its bioactivities would be highly improved at lower doses. The protected or modified EGCG molecule would have enhanced potential effects and stability that would contribute to the clinical applications and expand its use in various food and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
This study was to investigate the influence of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on the stability, bioavailability, and antioxidant activity of co-ingested tea polyphenols extract using an in vitro digestion model. The tea polyphenol contents decreased significantly after addition of 0.5 % (w/w) TiO2 NPs. The gallocatechin gallate level decreased the most, changing from 101.9 to 27.2 µg/mL (about 73.3%). The TiO2 NPs also reduced the bioavailability of the tea polyphenols in a dose-dependent manner, which was ascribed to the formation of large polyphenol-TiO2 NP complex aggregates that could not pass through the pores in the dialysis tube used to simulate the gut wall. Additionally, the TiO2 NPs decreased the antioxidant activity of the tea polyphenols within the simulated gastrointestinal tract. In summary, our results show that high levels of TiO2 NPs (but within the current legal limits in many countries) may negatively impact the bioavailability and bioactivity of polyphenols in foods.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPs) are among the most abundant functional compounds in tea. They exhibit strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. However, their instability and low bioavailability limits their applications. Nanotechnology, which involves the use of nanoscale substances (sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm) to improve the properties of substances, provides a solution for enhancing the stability and bioavailability of TPs. We reviewed the preparation, performance, effects, and applications of different types of TPs nanocarriers. First, we introduced the preparation of different nanocarriers, including nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, nanomicelles, and nanolipids. Then, we discussed various applications of tea polyphenol-loaded nanocarriers in functional ingredient delivery, food quality improvement, and active food packaging. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of TPs nanocarriers were elucidated. In conclusion, a nano-strategy may be the “key” to break the application barriers of TPs. Therefore, the use of nano-strategies for the safe, stable, and efficient release of TPs is the direction of future research.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) is a green biomedical agent for promoting wound healing, which possess excellent antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. For improving the low bioavailability challenges of EGCG in vivo, we had successful created a low-cost and simple wound dressing Poly (L-Lactic-co-caprolactone) (PLCL)/Gelatin/EGCG/Core-shell nanofiber membrane (PGEC) with drug sustained release capacity through coaxial electrospinning technology. In vitro experimental indicated that the core-shell structure wound dressing had excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial and antioxidant ability, which could support cell viability and proliferation, encourage re-epithelialization during the healing process, inhibit subsequent wound infection and thus promote wound regeneration. In vivo experimental demonstrated that PGEC wound dressing could promote wound healing, the histological results further demonstrated that PGEC not only facilitated early wound closure but also influenced cellular differentiation and tissue organization. Meanwhile, PGEC had excellent hemostatic ability. Taken all together, we believed that the PGEC wound dressing, which could localize delivery of EGCG, had high potential clinical application for promoting wound healing, hemostasis or other related clinical applications in the future.

Abstract
Aging is spontaneous and inevitable process in all living beings. It is a complex natural phenomenon that manifests as a gradual decline of physiological functions and homeostasis. Aging inevitably leads to age-associated injuries, diseases, and eventually death. The research on aging-associated diseases aimed at delaying, preventing or even reversing the aging process are of great significance for healthy aging and also for scientific progress. Numerous plant-derived compounds have anti-aging effects, but their therapeutic potential is limited due to their short shelf-life and low bioavailability. As the novel delivery system, nanoemulsion can effectively improve this defect. Nanoemulsions enhance the delivery of drugs to the target site, maintain the plasma concentration for a longer period, and minimize adverse reaction and side effects. This review describes the importance of nanoemulsions for the delivery of phyto-derived compounds and highlights the importance of nanoemulsions in the treatment of aging-related diseases. It also covers the methods of preparation, fate and safety of nanoemulsions, which will provide valuable information for the development of new strategies in treatment of aging-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although numerous medicinal herbal compounds demonstrate promising therapeutic potential, their clinical application is often limited by their poor oral bioavailability. To circumvent this barrier, various lipid-based herbal formulations have been developed and trialled with promising experimental results. PURPOSE This scoping review aims to describe the effect of lipid-based formulations on the oral bioavailability of herbal compounds. METHODS A systematic search was conducted across three electronic databases (Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library) between January 2010 and January 2021 to identify relevant studies. The articles were rigorously screened for eligibility. Data from eligible studies were then extracted and collated for synthesis and descriptive analysis using Covidence. RESULTS A total of 109 studies were included in the present review: 105 animal studies and four clinical trials. Among the formulations investigated, 50% were emulsions, 34% lipid particulate systems, 12% vesicular systems, and 4% were other types of lipid-based formulations. Within the emulsion system classification, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems were observed to produce the best improvements in oral bioavailability, followed by mixed micellar formulations. The introduction of composite lipid-based formulations and the use of uncommon surfactants such as sodium oleate in emulsion preparation was shown to consistently enhance the bioavailability of herbal compounds with poor oral absorption. Interestingly, the lipid-based formulations of magnesium lithospermate B and Pulsatilla chinensis produced an absolute bioavailability greater than 100% indicating the possibility of prolonged systemic circulation. With respect to chemical conjugation, D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) was the most frequently used and significantly improved the bioavailability of its phytoconstituents. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that there is no distinct lipid-based formulation superior to the other. Bioavailability improvements were largely dependent on the nature of the phytoconstituents. This scoping review, however, provided a detailed summary of the most up-to-date evidence on phytoconstituents formulated into lipid preparations and their oral bioavailability. We conclude that a systematic review and meta-analysis between bioavailability improvements of individual phytoconstituents (such as kaempferol, morin and myricetin) in various lipid-based formulations will provide a more detailed association. Such a review will be highly beneficial for both researchers and herbal manufacturers.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide is widely utilized as a pigment in the food industry to enhance the whiteness or brightness of foods and beverages. The powdered forms of titanium dioxide used as food ingredients contain a substantial fraction of nanoparticles (d < 100 nm), which may have adverse effects on human health. This is a model study that investigated the molecular interactions between TiO2 nanoparticles and selected polyphenols, as well as their influence on the in vitro bioavailability and antioxidant activity of the polyphenols. Our results showed that the chemical structure of polyphenols significantly influenced their binding affinity to TiO2 nanoparticle surfaces, with those possessing vicinal trihydroxy groups having the highest binding affinities. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles was shown to reduce the bioavailability of polyphenols using an in vitro digestion model. This effect was mainly ascribed to the formation of large TiO2 nanoparticle-polyphenol complex agglomerates that could not pass through the pores in the dialysis tube used to simulate the epithelium layer. Additionally, the binding of polyphenols to the surfaces of TiO2 nanoparticles reduced their antioxidant activity. This study provides valuable insights into the impact of inorganic nanoparticles on the bioavailability and bioactivity of polyphenols.

Abstract
Improving the stability and bioavailability of catechins is of great importance. Epigallocatechin (EGC), the major catechin in green tea, is a potent antioxidant with numerous attributed health benefits. However, the low permeability and stability limit its enrichment in the diet for preventive medicine. In this study, we explored the interaction of EGC and α-lactalbumin by spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and crystallographic methods. The isothermal titration calorimetry experiments elucidated that α-lactalbumin binds to EGC at a ratio of 1:1 with a low affinity of (4.01 ± 0.11) × 105 M-1. A crystal structure solved at a high resolution (1.2 Å) provided direct evidence for the weak interaction between EGC and α-lactalbumin at an atomic level. The novel binding site was discovered at the exterior surface of α-lactalbumin for the first time, supporting a new binding behavior. Consequently, our results demonstrated that the binding of α-lactalbumin to EGC could protect EGC against light-induced, thermal-induced, and pH-induced damage. More importantly, the formed complex has better bioaccessibility than unbound EGC, which was approved by a cell absorption experiment. Such research is beneficial for designing protein-based nanocarriers for polyphenols.

Abstract
Polyphenols play a therapeutic role in vascular diseases, acting in inherent illness-associate conditions such as inflammation, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and oxidative stress, as demonstrated by clinical trials and epidemiological surveys. The main polyphenol cardioprotective mechanisms rely on increased nitric oxide, decreased asymmetric dimethylarginine levels, upregulation of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes via the Nrf2-ARE pathway and anti-inflammatory action through the redox-sensitive transcription factor NF-κB and PPAR-γ receptor. However, poor polyphenol bioavailability and extensive metabolization restrict their applicability. Polyphenols carried by nanoparticles circumvent these limitations providing controlled release and better solubility, chemical protection, and target achievement. Nano-encapsulate polyphenols loaded in food grade polymers and lipids appear to be safe, gaining resistance in the enteric route for intestinal absorption, in which the mucoadhesiveness ensures their increased uptake, achieving high systemic levels in non-metabolized forms. Nano-capsules confer a gradual release to these compounds, as well as longer half-lives and cell and whole organism permanence, reinforcing their effectiveness, as demonstrated in pre-clinical trials, enabling their application as an adjuvant therapy against cardiovascular diseases. Polyphenol entrapment in nanoparticles should be encouraged in nutraceutical manufacturing for the fortification of foods and beverages. This study discusses pre-clinical trials evaluating how nano-encapsulate polyphenols following oral administration can aid in cardiovascular performance.

Abstract
Epicatechin gallate (ECG) is a main effective catechin widely existing in natural plants and food, with well-known health benefits. The present study first designed a new exosome-based delivery system for ECG and examined its neuroprotective effects on a rotenone (Rot)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) model in vitro. Exosomes (Exo) were isolated from fresh bovine milk, and their average size was 85.15 ± 2.00 nm. ECG was encapsulated into Exo by a sonication method, and the loading efficiency of ECG-loaded exosomes (ECG-Exo) was 25.96 ± 0.45%. The neuroprotective effects of ECG-Exo were evaluated on Rot-induced SHSY5Y cells and compared with free ECG. Cell viability, cellular reactive oxygen species, apoptosis rate, and the expressions of caspase-3, Bax, Bcl-2, parkin, PINK1, and Atg5 were determined. Our results showed that Exo delivered ECG successfully into SHSY5Y cells and exhibited enhanced neuroprotective effects. ECG-Exo might inhibit SHSY5Y cell damage induced by Rot through antiapoptosis and antimitophagy.

Abstract
Catechins are polyphenolic compounds which abundantly occur in the plants, especially tea leaves. They are widely used in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical formulations due to their capability of lowering the risk of developing various diseases. Nevertheless, low stability, loss of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities hinder the direct application of catechins in food formulations. To surmount this pervasive challenge, bioactive ingredients should be entrapped in a biopolymeric matrix. Thus, nanoencapsulation technology would be an appropriate strategy to improve the stability of these bioactive compounds and to protect them against degradation. Among different types of nanocarriers, biopolymer-based nanovehicles has captured a lot of attention in both industry and academia due to their safety and biocompatibility. This revision enlarges upon the various types of biopolymeric nanostructures used for accommodation of catechins, namely nanogels, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanoemulsions and nanoparticles. Last but not least, the applications of the entrapped catechins in the food industry are highlighted.
