Abstract
Microalgae biomass is regarded as a potential feedstock for valuable compounds such as pigments, lipids and proteins. However, development of single molecule extraction processes is the most common practice. A green multiproduct extraction approach is needed for economically sustainable process development of the microalgal industry. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the sequential extraction of lutein and lipid from dry and wet Chlorella pyrenoidosa biomass pretreated with a choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) under a sustainable biorefinery scheme. In this context, we have assessed the kinetic modeling of the solid-liquid extraction process for the aforementioned compounds, focusing on the effects of temperature and time. The maximum lutein (3.80 mg g-1) and lipid (95.0 mg g-1) contents from dry biomass were obtained at 45 °C in 40 min and at 70 °C in 90 min, respectively. From wet biomass, the maximum lutein (2.57 mg g-1) and lipid contents (87.47 mg g-1) were obtained at 35 °C in 40 min and at 70 °C in 90 min, respectively. The kinetics of the solvent-based extraction process for lutein and lipids were assessed via first-order and second-order kinetic models with an associated investigation of kinetic parameters, such as rate constants, saturation concentration and activation energies. We found that temperature is an important parameter that influences the extraction of all compounds and also has a significant impact on the kinetic parameters. Toxicity evaluation of the DES and economic assessment of DES vs. ionic liquids (ILs) were performed. The synthesis cost of the DES is lower than that of ILs, and Escherichia coli JM109 survivability assessment confirms the DES as a non-toxic solvent. The present study provides valuable insights into the sequential extraction for a high-value multiproduct biorefinery.

Abstract
This study utilizes the advanced analytical capabilities of nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics to perform an untargeted and comprehensive analysis of the metabolic profile ofChrysochromulina rotalis under varying environmental conditions and photobioreactor setups. By identifying key biomolecules, including lipids, pigments, proteins, and carbohydrates, this research highlights the remarkable adaptability ofC. rotalis and its potential as a valuable source of bioactive compounds with industrial application. These findings are supported by experiments conducted at both laboratory and pilot scales. At the laboratory scale, a bubbling bench photobioreactor operated under various LED lights, irradiances, and temperatures. At the pilot scale, 80 L indoor and outdoor tubular and bubble column photobioreactors were used with modified nutrient concentrations and irradiances, along with a 140 L outdoor flat panel photobioreactor. Significant metabolic variations were observed across these setups. Optimal production of carotenoids, chlorophyll c, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), triacylglycerols (TAG), and 1,2-diacylglycerols occurred at 30 μmol·m-2·s-1. Temperature effects revealed that 25 °C favored carotenoids and PUFA, while 35 °C increased glycerol and dimethyl sulfoniopropionate (DMSP). Red light enhanced fatty acids (FA), whereas white light increased osmolytes and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Scaling up cultivation further influenced the metabolic profile. Tubular photobioreactors at 268 μmol·m-2·s-1 had higher PUFA, TAG, and carotenoid levels, while the indoor bubble columns contained more fucoxanthin, choline, and osmolytes. The outdoor bubble column and flat panel photobioreactors exhibited a similar metabolite composition, with the bubble column showing higher levels of sterols and alanine. Finally, metabolite covariation patterns were explored using Spearman rank correlation, providing insights into metabolic regulation under different conditions. These findings contribute to optimizing photobioreactor-based cultivation strategies for maximizing the production of valuable biomolecules fromC. rotalis.

Abstract
The co-contamination of microplastics and pharmaceutical pollutants has attracted increasing attention. However, studies on the joint toxicity of pollutants on organisms in aquatic ecosystems are still lacking. This study aimed to investigate the joint toxicity of oxcarbazepine (OXC, 30 mg/L) and polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs, 500 mg/L and particle size of 180 μm) microplastics on microalgae (Chlorella sp. FACHB-9) and the biodegradation of OXC by strain FACHB-9. Compared to the single OXC exposure, the cell density of microalgae was decreased by 38.93% in OXC/PP-MPs co-contamination system, with enhanced oxidative stress and decreased photosynthetic efficiency. Transcriptomic analyses indicated that photosynthetic pathways and TCA cycle pathways were significantly inhibited, while DNA damage repair pathways were up regulated in microalgae co-exposed to OXC and PP-MPs. Moreover, strain FACHB-9 showed a remarkable degradation effect (91.61% and 86.27%) on OXC in single and mixture group, respectively. These findings significantly expanded the existing knowledge on the joint toxicity of pollutants on microalgae, indicating prospective promise of microalgae for the bioremediation of polluted aquatic environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The gradual extrusion of water-soluble intracellular components (such as proteins) from microalgae after pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment is a well-documented phenomenon. This could be utilized in biorefinery applications with lipid extraction taking place after such an 'incubation' period, i.e., a post-PEF-treatment step during which the biomass is left undisturbed before any further processing. The goal of this work was to further explore how this incubation could improve lipid extraction. RESULTS Experiments were conducted on wet, freshly harvested Auxenochlorella protothecoides, treated with 0.25 or 1.5 MJ/kgDW and incubated for 24 h. Lipid extraction took place with a monophasic ethanol:hexane:water, 1:0.41:0.04 vol/vol/vol mixture with a 75.6 mL solvent per 1 g of dry biomass ratio. The kinetics of the extraction were studied with samples taken between 10 and 1080 min from fresh and incubated biomass. The yields at 10 min were significantly increased with incubation compared to without (31.2% dry weight compared to 1.81%, respectively). The experimental data were fitted with the Patricelli model where extraction occurs in two steps, a rapid washing of immediate available lipids and a slower diffusion one. During Nile-Red staining of microalgae and microscopy imaging, a shift of emission from both GFP and RFP channels to mostly RFP was observed indicating an increase in the polarity of the environment of Nile-Red. These led to an adaption of a biphasic ethanol:hexane:water 1:6:0.4 vol/vol/vol solvent with 37 mL solvent per 1 g of dry biomass ratio which while ineffective on fresh biomass, achieved a 27% dry weight yield from incubated microalgae. The extraction efficiency in the biphasic route was lower compared to the monophasic (i.e., 69% and 95%, respectively). It was compensated however, by the significant solvent reduction (37 mL to 75.6 mL respectively), in particular the ethanol minimization. For the extraction of 1 L lipids, it was estimated that the energy consumption ratio for the biphasic process was 1.6 compared to 9.9 for monophasic, making clearly the most preferential one. CONCLUSIONS This biphasic approach significantly reduces solvent consumption and the respective energy requirement for solvent recovery. Incubation thus could majorly improve the commercialization prospects of the process.

Abstract
Microalgal biotechnology offers a promising platform for the sustainable production of diverse renewable bioactive compounds. The key distinction from other microbial bioprocesses lies in the critical role that light plays in cultures, as it serves as a source of environmental information to control metabolic processes. Therefore, we can use these criteria to design a bioprocess that aims to stimulate the accumulation of target molecules by controlling light exposure. We study the effect on biochemical and photobiological responses of Golenkinia brevispicula FAUBA-3 to the exposition of different spectral irradiances (specifically, high-fluence PAR of narrow yellow spectrum complemented with low intensity of monochromatic radiations of red, blue, and UV-A) under prestress and salinity stress conditions. High light (HL) intensity coupled to salinity stress affected the photosynthetic activity and photoprotection mechanisms as shown by maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQmax) reduction, respectively. HL treatments combined with the proper dose of UV-A radiation under salinity stress induced the highest carotenoid content (2.75 mg g dry weight [DW]- 1) composed mainly of lutein and β-carotene, and the highest lipid accumulation (35.3% DW) with the highest polyunsaturated fatty acid content (alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3) and linoleic acid (C18:2)). Our study can guide the strategies for commercial indoor production of G. brevispicula for high-value metabolites.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of culture medium salinity (5-50 PSU) on the growth and maximum photochemical yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and the composition of carotenoids, fatty acids, and bioactive substances in three marine microalgae (Chrysochromulina rotalis, Amphidinium carterae, and Heterosigma akashiwo). The microalgae were photoautotrophically cultured in discontinuous mode in a single stage (S1) and a two-stage culture with salt shock (S2). A growth model was developed to link biomass productivity with salinity for each species. C. rotalis achieved a maximum biomass productivity (Pmax) of 15.85 ± 0.32 mg·L-1·day-1 in S1 and 16.12 ± 0.13 mg·L-1·day-1 in S2. The salt shock in S2 notably enhanced carotenoid production, particularly in C. rotalis and H. akashiwo, where fucoxanthin was the main carotenoid, while peridinin dominated in A. carterae. H. akashiwo also exhibited increased fatty acid productivity in S2. Salinity changes affected the proportions of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in all three species. Additionally, hyposaline conditions boosted the production of haemolytic substances in A. carterae and C. rotalis.

Abstract
As a rapidly growing source of human nutrients, algae biosynthesize diverse metabolites which have promising bioactivities. However, the potential allergenicity of algal components hinder their widespread adoption. This review provides a comprehensive review of various macro and micronutrients derived from algal biomass, with particular focus on bioactive compounds, including peptides, polyphenols, carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids and phycocyanins. The approaches used to produce algal bioactive compounds and their health benefits (antioxidant, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory) are summarised. This review particularly focuses on the state-of-the-art of precision fermentation, encapsulation, cold plasma, high-pressure processing, pulsed electric field, and subcritical water to reduce the allergenicity of algal compounds while increasing their bioactivity and bioavailability. By providing insights into current challenges of algae-derived compounds and opportunities for advancement, this review contributes to the ongoing discourse on maximizing their application potential in the food nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals industries.

Abstract
Microalgae play a crucial role in global carbon cycling as they convert carbon dioxide into various valuable macromolecules. Among them, Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) is the richest natural source of astaxanthin (AXT), which is a valuable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptosis agent. These benefits make AXT highly commercially valuable in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and nutritional industries. However, intrinsic genetic characteristics and extrinsic cultivation conditions influence biomass gains, leading to low productivity and extraction as the main techno-economic bottlenecks in this industry. Thus, detecting AXT in H. pluvialis is essential to determine the influence of multiple parameters on biocompound accumulation, enabling optimization of cultivation and enrichment of AXT-rich H. pluvialis cells. This work developed an opto-acousto-fluidic microplatform for detection, analysis, and sorting of microalgae. Via label-free monitoring and extraction of sample-induced ultrasonic signals, a photoacoustic microscopic system was proposed to provide a full-field visualization of AXT's content and distribution inside H. pluvialis cells. When employed as on-chip image-based flow cytometry, our microplatform can also offer high-throughput measurements of intracellular AXT in real time, which demonstrates similar results to conventional spectrophotometry methods and further reveals the heterogeneity of AXT content at the single-cell level. In addition, a solenoid valve-pump dual-mode cell sorter was integrated for effective sorting of cells with a maximum working frequency of 0.77 Hz, reducing the fluid response time by 50% in rising and 40-fold in recovery. The H. pluvialis cells which have more AXT accumulation (>30 μm in diameter) were 4.38-fold enriched with almost no dead empty and small green cells. According to the results, automated and reliable photoacoustics-activated cell sorting (PA-ACS) can screen AXT-rich cells and remove impurities at the terminal stage of cultivation, thereby increasing the effectiveness and purity of AXT extraction. The proposed system can be further adopted to enrich strains and mutants for the production of biofuels or other rare organic substances such as β-carotene and lutein.

Abstract
Marine microalgae have potential to be low-cost raw materials. This depends on the exploitation of different biomass fractions for high-value products, including unique compounds. Chrysochromulina rotalis, an under-explored haptophyte with promising properties, was the focus of this study. For the first time, C. rotalis was successfully cultivated in an 80 L tubular photobioreactor, illuminated by an easy-to-use light-emitting-diode-based system. C. rotalis grew without certain trace elements and showed adaptability to different phosphorus sources, allowing a significant reduction in the N:P ratio without compromising biomass yield and productivity. The design features of the photobioreactor provided a protective environment that ensured consistent biomass production from this shear-sensitive microalgae. Carotenoid analysis showed fucoxanthin and its derivatives as major components, with essential fatty acids making up a significant proportion of the total. The study emphasizes the tubular photobioreactor's role in sustainable biomass production for biorefineries, with C. rotalis as a valuable bioactive feedstock.

Abstract
Food additives have become a critical component in the food industry. They are employed as preservatives to decelerate the negative effects of environmental and microbial factors on food quality. Currently, food additives are used for a variety of purposes, including colorants, flavor enhancers, nutritional supplements, etc., owing to improvements in the food industry. Since the usage of food additives has increased dramatically, the efficient monitoring of their acceptable levels in food products is quite necessary to mitigate the problems associated with their inappropriate use. The traditional methods used for detecting food additives are generally based on standard spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. However, these analytical techniques are limited by their high instrumentation cost and time-consuming procedures. The emerging field of nanotechnology has enabled the development of highly sensitive and specific sensors to analyze food additives in a rapid manner. The current article emphasizes the need to detect various food additives owing to their potential negative effects on humans, animals, and the environment. In this article, the role of nanomaterials in the optical sensing of food additives has been discussed owing to their high accuracy, ease-of-use, and excellent sensitivity. The applications of nanosensors for the detection of various food additives have been elaborated with examples. The current article will assist policymakers in developing new rules and regulations to mitigate the adverse effects of toxic food additives on humans and the environment. In addition, the prospects of nanosensors for the optical detection of food additives at a commercial scale have been discussed to combat their irrational use in the food industry.

Abstract
Several compounds with different physical properties are present in foods, biological components, and environmental samples, and there are cases in which these must be analyzed simultaneously. However, it is difficult to extract compounds with different physical properties from the same sample using a single method. In the present study, we examined the optimal conditions for the QuEChERS extraction of several kinds of compounds from orange juice using design of experiments (DoE) and response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the optimal ratio of organic solvent to sodium chloride. We determined the optimal extraction conditions, which were within the design space, using 100% tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the extraction organic solvent and NaCl:MgSO4 = 75:25 as the salt. The developed LC/MS/MS method using QuEChERS extraction achieved specific detection and precise quantification. Finally, we measured the polyphenols, sterols, and carotenoids in citrus juice using the optimized QuEChERS extraction method before LC/MS/MS analysis. Most of the analytes were quantifiable in orange juice. The optimized method achieved ease of operation, the extraction of analytes from food samples in a short time (within 30 min), minimization of analytical residues, and reliability. The DoE and RSM approach may contribute to better optimization of the extraction conditions for the lowest number of experiments.

Abstract
This paper demonstrates a sequential partitioning method for isolating bioactive compounds from Chrysochromulina rotalis using a polarity gradient, replacing classic and hazardous solvents with greener alternatives. Seventeen solvents were evaluated based on their Hansen solubility parameters and for having a similar polarity to the solvents they would replace, four of which were selected as substitutes in the classic fractionation process. Considering the fatty acid and carotenoid recovery yields obtained for each of the solvents, it has been proposed to replace hexane (HEX), toluene (TOL), dichloromethane (DCM) and n-butanol (BUT) with cyclohexane, chlorobenzene, isobutyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol, respectively. In addition, cytotoxic activity was observed when the TOL and DCM solvent extracts were tested against tumour cell lines, demonstrating the antiproliferative potential of compounds containing, for example, fucoxanthin, fatty acids, peptides, isoflavonoids or terpenes, among others.

Abstract
The red tide-forming microalga Heterosigma akashiwo has been associated with massive events of fish deaths, both wild and cultured. Culture conditions are responsible for the synthesis or accumulation of some metabolites with different interesting bioactivities. H. akashiwo LC269919 strain was grown in a 10 L bubble column photobioreactor artificially illuminated with multi-coloured LED lights. Growth and production of exopolysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and carotenoids were evaluated under different culture modes (batch, fed-batch, semicontinuous, and continuous) at two irradiance levels (300 and 700 µE·s-1·m-2). Continuous mode at the dilution rate of 0.2·day-1 and 700 µE·s-1·m-2 provided the highest production of biomass, PUFAs (132.6 and 2.3 mg·L-1·day-1), and maximum fucoxanthin productivity (0.16 mg·L-1·day-1). The fed-batch mode accumulated exopolysaccharides in a concentration (1.02 g·L-1) 10-fold over the batch mode. An extraction process based on a sequential gradient partition with water and four water-immiscible organic solvents allowed the isolation of bioactive fucoxanthin from methanolic extracts of H. akashiwo. Metabolites present in H. akashiwo, fucoxanthin and polar lipids (i.e., eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)), or probably such as phytosterol (β-Sitosterol) from other microalgae, were responsible for the antitumor activity obtained.

Abstract
Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) has great potential for feeding future demands in food, environment, energy, and pharmaceuticals. To achieve this goal, the exploitation of emerging efficient technique such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) for CP nutrient enrichment is crucial. Here, UAE is deployed for high-efficient CP protein (CPP) valorisation. Compared to conventional solvent extraction (CSE), remarkable mass transfer enhancements with 9-time protein yields and 3-time extraction rate are achieved by ultrasonic cavitation in UAE, indicating UAE can drastically shift intracellular nutrients including proteins and pigments to solvent. Cell morphology and ultrastructure show the different responses of cell wall and membrane, indicating that the cell membrane may play a role in the extraction process, based on which the extremely-low efficiency of CSE and high efficiency of UAE are highlighted. This study provides a solution for future food crisis by extracting CPP and may open a new discussion field in ultrasonic extraction.

Abstract
Currently, microalgae are used in fish diets, but their long-term growth effect is unknown. In this experiment, juvenile seabream specimens were fed with microalgae-enriched diets for three months, and then transferred to a microalgae-free diet for 10 months to assess long-term effects up to commercial size (≈27 cm and ≈300 g). The juvenile diets contained Nannochloropsis gaditana at 2.5 or 5% inclusion levels, either raw (R2.5 and R5 groups) or cellulose-hydrolyzed (H2.5 and H5 groups). The body length and weight were measured in 75 fish group-1 at commercial stage. The size, number, and fibrillar density of white muscle fibers and the white muscle transverse area were measured in nine fish group-1 at commercial stage. The results showed the highest body weight in H5 at commercial stage. The white muscle transverse area and the white fibres hyperplasia and density also showed the highest values in H5, followed by H2.5. In contrast, the highest hypertrophy was observed in C and R2.5, being associated with the lowest muscle growth in both groups. These results showed a microalgae concentration-dependent effect in hydrolyzed diets as well as an advantageous effect of the hydrolyzed versus raw diets on the long-term growth of Sparus aurata.

Abstract
Microalgae have the highest capability to fix the atmospheric carbon and wastewater-derived nutrients to produce high-value bioproducts including lipids and carotenoids. However, their lower titers and single-product-oriented biomass processing have made the overall process expensive. Hence, increased metabolite titer and processing of the biomass for more than one product are required to ensure the commercial robustness of the algal biorefinery. In this study, a newly isolated algal strain was identified as Bracteacoccus pseudominor BERC09 through phylogenetic analysis based on the 18S rRNA gene sequence. Basic characterization of the strain revealed its promising potential to produce carotenoids and lipids. The lipids and carotenoid biosynthesis pathways of BERC09 were further triggered by manipulating the abiotic factors including nitrogen sources (NaNO3, KNO3, NH4Cl, Urea), nitrogen concentrations (0.06-0.36 gL-1), light intensity (150 μmolm-2s-1 to 300 μmolm-2s-1), and light quality (white and blue). Resultantly, 300 μmolm-2s-1 of blue light yielded 0.768 gL-1 of biomass, 8.4 mgg-1 of carotenoids, and 390 mgg-1 of lipids, and supplementation of 0.36 gL-1 of KNO3 further improved metabolism and yielded 0.814 gL-1 of biomass, 11.86 mgg-1 of carotenoids, and 424 mgg-1 of lipids. Overall, the optimal combination of light and nitrogen concurrently improved biomass, carotenoids, and lipids by 3.5-fold, 6-fold, and 4-fold than control, respectively. Besides, the excellent glycoproteins-based self-flocculation ability of the strain rendered an easier harvesting via gravity sedimentation. Hence, this biomass can be processed in a cascading fashion to use this strain as a candidate for a multiproduct biorefinery to achieve commercial robustness and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Natural carotenoids (CARs), viz. β-carotene, lutein, astaxanthin, bixin, norbixin, capsanthin, lycopene, canthaxanthin, β-Apo-8-carotenal, zeaxanthin, and β-apo-8-carotenal-ester, are being studied as potential candidates in fields such as food, feed, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. CAR research is advancing in the following three major fields: (1) CAR production from natural sources and optimization of its downstream processing; (2) encapsulation for enhanced physical and chemical properties; and (3) preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies of CARs' health benefits. This review critically discusses the recent developments in studies of the chemistry and antioxidant activity, marketing trends, dietary sources, extraction, bioaccessibility and bioavailability, encapsulation methods, dietary intake, and health benefits of CARs. Preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies on cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disease, mental health, eye, and skin health are also discussed.

Abstract
Microalgae have an outstanding capacity to efficiently produce value-added compounds. They have been inspiring researchers worldwide to develop a blue biorefinery, supporting the development of the bioeconomy, tackling the environmental crisis, and mitigating the depletion of natural resources. In this review, the characteristics of the carotenoids produced by microalgae are presented and the downstream processes developed to recover and purify them are analyzed, considering their main applications. The ongoing activities and initiatives taking place in Portugal regarding not only research, but also industrialization under the blue biorefinery concept are also discussed. The situation reported here shows that new techniques must be developed to make microalgae production more competitive. Downstream pigment purification technologies must be developed as they may have a considerable impact on the economic viability of the process. Government incentives are needed to encourage a constructive interaction between academics and businesses in order to develop a biorefinery that focuses on high-grade chemicals.

Abstract
Microalgae are a valuable natural resource for a variety of biocompounds such as carotenoids. The use of different light spectra and irradiance has been considered as a promising option to improve the production of these compounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different wavelengths (white, red, and blue) and irradiances (80 and 350 µmol photons/m2/s) on the photosynthetic state, total carotenoids and lutein productivity (HPLC), lipids (Nile red method) and antioxidant activity (DPPH) of the microalgae Muriellopsis sp. (MCH-35). This microalga, which is a potential source of lutein, was isolated from the coastal desert of Antofagasta, Chile, and adapted to grow in seawater. The results indicate that the culture exposed to high-intensity red light showed the highest biomass yield (2.5 g/L) and lutein productivity (>2.0 mg L−1day−1). However, blue light was found to have a stimulating effect on the synthesis of lutein and other carotenoids (>0.8% dry wt). Furthermore, a direct relationship between lipid accumulation and high light intensity was evidenced. Finally, the highest antioxidant activity was observed with high-intensity white light, these values have no direct relationship with lutein productivity. Therefore, the findings of this study could be utilized to obtain biocompounds of interest by altering certain culture conditions during the large-scale cultivation of MCH-35.

Abstract
Chloropycean microalgae are looked up as a prospective alternate source for the production of xanthophyll carotenoid lutein. Despite, the market significance and multitude of nutraceutical applications of lutein commercial production from microalgae still remains a challenge due to the prohibitive downstream cost. This necessitates innovative less energy intensive, high lutein yielding green processes. The present work presents a comprehensive study on the rapid green microwave assisted extraction (MAE) of lutein from marine chlorophycean microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana (NIOT-2). The process parameters of microwave assisted alkali pre-treatment like exposure time (ET), alkali concentration (AC) and solid (biomass): liquid (aqueous Potassium hydroxide-KOH) ratio (S: L ratio) were optimized using single factor and response surface method (RSM) experiments. The optimized conditions for microwave assisted alkali pre-treatment (ET:1.47 min; AC: 8.16 M KOH and S:L ratio of 36.8:1 (mg/mL) augmented the lutein yield (20.69 ± 1.2 mg/g) 3.26 fold when compared to conventional extraction (6.35 ± 0.44 mg/g). Lutein extracted using optimized MAE conditions was purified and characterized. Visualization of the MAE extracted algal biomass using Scanning electron microscope confirmed the effective cell disruption. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of microwave assisted alkali treated biomass (83.85%) revealed a significantly higher crystallinity index when compared to untreated control (17.28%). MAE pre-treatment can thus be propounded as a suitable process for lutein extraction from marine microalgae due to its amalgamated rapidity, homogenous heating, less energy intensiveness and high extraction yield.

Abstract
The diversity of algal species is a rich source of many different bioactive metabolites. The compounds extracted from algal biomass have various beneficial effects on health. Recently, co-culture systems between microalgae and bacteria have emerged as an interesting solution that can reduce the high contamination risk associated with axenic cultures and, consequently, increase biomass yield and synthesis of active compounds. Probiotic microorganisms also have numerous positive effects on various aspects of health and represent potent co-culture partners. Most studies consider algae as prebiotics that serve as enhancers of probiotics performance. However, the extreme diversity of algal organisms and their ability to produce a plethora of metabolites are leading to new experimental designs in which these organisms are cultivated together to derive maximum benefit from their synergistic interactions. The future success of these studies depends on the precise experimental design of these complex systems. In the last decade, the development of high-throughput approaches has enabled a deeper understanding of global changes in response to interspecies interactions. Several studies have shown that the addition of algae, along with probiotics, can influence the microbiota, and improve gut health and overall yield in fish, shrimp, and mussels aquaculture. In the future, such findings can be further explored and implemented for use as dietary supplements for humans.

Abstract
β-carotene, a member of the carotenoid family, is a provitamin A, and can be converted into vitamin A (retinol), which plays essential roles in the regulation of physiological functions in animal bodies. Microalgae synthesize a variety of carotenoids including β-carotene and are a rich source of natural β-carotene. This has attracted the attention of researchers in academia and the biotech industry. Methods to enrich or purify β-carotene from microalgae have been investigated, and experiments to understand the biological functions of microalgae products containing β-carotene have been conducted. To better understand the use of microalgae to produce β-carotene and other carotenoids, we have searched PubMed in August 2021 for the recent studies that are focused on microalgae carotenoid content, the extraction methods to produce β-carotene from microalgae, and the bioactivities of β-carotene from microalgae. Articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals were identified, screened, and summarized here. So far, various types and amounts of carotenoids have been identified and extracted in different types of microalgae. Diverse methods have been developed overtime to extract β-carotene efficiently and practically from microalgae for mass production. It appears that methods have been developed to simplify the steps and extract β-carotene directly and efficiently. Multiple studies have shown that extracts or whole organism of microalgae containing β-carotene have activities to promote lifespan in lab animals and reduce oxidative stress in culture cells, etc. Nevertheless, more studies are warranted to study the health benefits and functional mechanisms of β-carotene in these microalgae extracts, which may benefit human and animal health in the future.

Abstract
Natural carotenoids are secondary metabolites that exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. These types of compounds are highly demanded by pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, and food industries, leading to the search for new natural sources of carotenoids. In recent years, the production of carotenoids from bacteria has become of great interest for industrial applications. In addition to carotenoids with C40-skeletons, some bacteria have the ability to synthesize characteristic carotenoids with C30-skeletons. In this regard, a great variety of methodologies for the extraction and identification of bacterial carotenoids has been reported and this is the first review that condenses most of this information. To understand the diversity of carotenoids from bacteria, we present their biosynthetic origin in order to focus on the methodologies employed in their extraction and characterization. Special emphasis has been made on high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) for the analysis and identification of bacterial carotenoids. We end up this review showing their potential commercial use. This review is proposed as a guide for the identification of these metabolites, which are frequently reported in new bacteria strains.

Abstract
An amphidinol-prioritized fractioning approach was for the first time developed to isolate multiple specialty metabolites such as amphidinols, carotenoids and fatty acids using the biomass of the marine microalgae Amphidinium carterae. The biomass was produced in a raceway photobioreactor and the exhausted culture media were reused, thus fulfilling sustainability criteria employing a circular economy concept. The integrated bioactive compounds-targeted approach presented here consisted of four steps with which recovery percentages of carotenoids, fatty acids and amphidinols of 97%, 82% and 99 %, respectively, were achieved. The proposed process was proved to be a better extraction system for this microalga than another based on a sequential gradient partition with water and four water-immiscible organic solvents (hexane, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane and n-butanol). The proposed process could be scaled-up as a commercial solid-phase extraction technology well-established for industrial bioprocesses.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as an antioxidant source of enriched biomass. This microalga is a model organism deeply investigated for physiological studies, particularly considering carotenoid synthesis in response to stress, to counteract the effects of the formation of free radicals. Less attention has been paid to the profile characterization of other antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, which can be synthesized, concomitantly with carotenoids, under photooxidative stress, especially high light. The cultures of C. reinhardtii were exposed to three different light intensities, 70, 800 and 1500 µmoles photons m−2 s−1. The increasing light intensity symmetrically induced the increasing accumulation of both carotenoids and phenolic compounds. The results showed that exposure to high light intensities caused the accumulation of electrons in the electron transport chain, with a reduction in photosynthetic activity. In the same cultures, high light intensity induced the strong increment of polyphenols such as gallic, chlorogenic and coumaric acids, which resulted 6.2-fold, 4-fold and 3.7-fold higher, respectively, than in cells exposed to the lowest intensities. As expected, at the highest light intensity, the strong induction of the xanthophyll cycle and the largest increment of loroxanthin, lutein, α-carotene and ß-carotene could be detected. Antioxidant properties doubled with respect to the initial time, both in acetone and methanol cellular extracts of these cultures, revealing a new potential role for biotechnological application of this microalga.

Abstract
It has been demonstrated that microalgae play an important role in the food, agriculture and medicine industries. Additionally, the identification and counting of the microalgae are also a critical step in evaluating water quality, and some lipid-rich microalgae species even have the potential to be an alternative to fossil fuels. However, current technologies for the detection and analysis of microalgae are costly, labor-intensive, time-consuming and throughput limited. In the past few years, microfluidic chips integrating optical components have emerged as powerful tools that can be used for the analysis of microalgae with high specificity, sensitivity and throughput. In this paper, we review recent optofluidic lab-on-chip systems and techniques used for microalgal detection and characterization. We introduce three optofluidic technologies that are based on fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy and imaging-based flow cytometry, each of which can achieve the determination of cell viability, lipid content, metabolic heterogeneity and counting. We analyze and summarize the merits and drawbacks of these micro-systems and conclude the direction of the future development of the optofluidic platforms applied in microalgal research.

Abstract
Human studies have demonstrated the multiple health benefits of fruits and vegetables. Due to its high fiber, mineral and antioxidant content, carrot is an ideal source for the development of nutraceuticals or functional ingredients. Current research assesses accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) traits which affect the antioxidant qualities of carrot extract using response surface methodology (RSM), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and the sum of ranking differences (SRD). A mixture of organic solvents, acetone, and ethanol with or without the addition of 20% water was applied. The total carotenoid and polyphenol contents in extracts, as well as their scavenging activity and reducing power, were used as responses for the optimization of ASE extraction. RSM optimization, in the case of 20% water involvement, included 49% of acetone and 31% of ethanol (Opt1), while in the case of pure organic solvents, pure ethanol was the best choice (Opt2). The results of HCA clearly pointed out significant differences between the properties of extracts with or without water. SRD analysis confirmed ethanol to be optimal as well. RSM, HCA, and SRD analysis confirmed the same conclusion—water in the solvent mixture can significantly affect the extraction efficacy, and the optimal solvent for extracting antioxidants from carrot by ASE is pure ethanol.

Abstract
This study aimed to optimize the key parameters of extraction methods and to increase the recovery yields of intact xanthophylls (violaxanthin, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin) from microalgae (Chlorella luteoviridis). An effective, simple, and fast extraction protocol is described. It consists of a grinding pretreatment followed by a microwave-assisted extraction, using ethanol 90% as an environmentally preferable extraction solvent. Xanthopylls were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. Irradiation time of 6 s only resulted in the extraction of violaxanthin (4.479 ± 0.009 mg/g), astaxanthin (4.154 ± 0.013 mg/g), and zeaxanthin (4.776 ± 0.120 mg/g). The described protocol seems to be the fastest extraction method of xantophylls compared to the literature and could be an advantage for industrial scale, while saving time and energy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microalgae have attracted considerable interest due to their ability to produce a wide range of valuable compounds. Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF) has been demonstrated to effectively disrupt the microalgae cells and facilitate intracellular extraction. To increase the commercial viability of microalgae, the entire biomass should be exploited with different products extracted and valorized according to the biorefinery scheme. However, demonstrations of multiple component extraction in series are very limited in literature. This study aimed to develop an effective lipid extraction protocol from wet Scenedesmus almeriensis after PEF-treatment with 1.5 MJ·kgDW-1. A cascade process, i.e., the valorization of several products in row, was tested with firstly the collection of the released carbohydrates in the water fraction, then protein enzymatic hydrolysis and finally lipid extraction. Biomass processed with high pressure homogenization (HPH) on parallel, served as benchmark. RESULTS Lipid extraction with ethanol:hexane (1:0.41 vol/vol) offered the highest yields from the different protocols tested. PEF-treatment promoted extraction with almost 70% of total lipids extracted against 43% from untreated biomass. An incubation step after PEF-treatment, further improved the yields, up to 83% of total lipids. Increasing the solvent volume by factor 2 offered no improvement. In comparison, extraction with two other systems utilizing only ethanol at room temperature or elevated at 60 °C were ineffective with less than 30% of total lipids extracted. Regarding cascade extraction, carbohydrate release after PEF was detected albeit in low concentrations. PEF-treated samples displayed slightly better kinetics during the enzymatic protein hydrolysis compared to untreated or HPH-treated biomass. The yields from a subsequent lipid extraction were not affected after PEF but were significantly increased for untreated samples (66% of total lipids), while HPH displayed the lowest yields (~ 49% of total lipids). CONCLUSIONS PEF-treatment successfully promoted lipid extraction from S. almeriensis but only in combination with a polar:neutral co-solvent (ethanol:hexane). After enzymatic protein hydrolysis in cascade processing; however, untreated biomass displayed equal lipid yields due to the disruptive effect of the proteolytic enzymes. Therefore, the positive impact of PEF in this scheme is limited on the improved reaction kinetics exhibited during the enzymatic hydrolysis step.

Abstract
Several microalgae species have been exploited due to their great biotechnological potential for the production of a range of biomolecules that can be applied in a large variety of industrial sectors. However, the major challenge of biotechnological processes is to make them economically viable, through the production of commercially valuable compounds. Most of these compounds are accumulated inside the cells, requiring efficient technologies for their extraction, recovery and purification. Recent improvements approaching physicochemical treatments (e.g., supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, pulsed electric fields, among others) and processes without solvents are seeking to establish sustainable and scalable technologies to obtain target products from microalgae with high efficiency and purity. This article reviews the currently available approaches reported in literature, highlighting some examples covering recent granted patents for the microalgae’s components extraction, recovery and purification, at small and large scales, in accordance with the worldwide trend of transition to bio-based products.

Abstract
Food industry is always looking for more innovative and accurate ways to monitor the food safety and quality control of final products. Current detection techniques of analytes are costly and time-consuming, and occasionally require professional experts and specialized tools. The usage of nanomaterials in sensory systems has eliminated not only these drawbacks but also has advantages such as higher sensitivity and selectivity. This article first presents a general overview of the current studies conducted on the detection of spoilage and adulteration in foods from 2015 to 2020. Then, the sensory properties of nanomaterials including metal and magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, and nanofibers), nanowires, and electrospun nanofibers are presented. The latest investigations and advancements in the application of nanomaterial-based sensors in detecting spoilage (food spoilage pathogens, toxins, pH changes, and gases) and adulterants (food additives, glucose, melamine, and urea) have also been discussed in the following sections. To conclude, these sensors can be applied in the smart packaging of food products to meet the demand of consumers in the new era.

Abstract
In this study, we determined the effect of drying on extraction kinetics, yield, and lutein content and recovery of the microalga Muriellopsis sp. (MCH35) using the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process. The strain was cultivated in an open-raceways reactor in the presence of seawater culture media and arid outdoor conditions in the north of Chile. Spray-drying (SD) and freeze-drying (FD) techniques were used for dehydrating the microalgal biomass. Extraction experiments were performed by using Box-Behnken designs, and the parameters were studied: pressure (30–50 MPa), temperature (40–70 °C), and co-solvent (0–30% ethanol), with a CO2 flow rate of 3.62 g/min for 60 min. Spline linear model was applied in the central point of the experimental design to obtain an overall extraction curve and to reveal extraction kinetics involved in the SFE process. A significant increase in all variables was observed when the level of ethanol (15–30% v/v) was increased. However, temperature and pressure were non-significant parameters in the SFE process. The FD method showed an increase in lutein content and recovery by 0.3–2.5-fold more than the SD method. Overall, Muriellopsis sp. (MCH35) is a potential candidate for cost-effective lutein production, especially in desert areas and for different biotechnological applications.

Abstract
The extraction of three families of compounds (carotenoids, fatty acids and amphidinols) from the biomass of two strains of Amphidinium carterae (ACRN03 and Dn241EHU) was improved by tuning cell disruption and solvent extraction operations. The extraction of carotenoids was evaluated using alkaline saponification (0%-60% KOH d.w.) at different temperatures (25-80 °C). High levels of carotenoids were obtained at 60 °C using freeze-dried biomass, not subjected to cell disruption methods. The ACRN03 strain required 20% KOH whereas the Dn241EHU strain did not require saponification since carotenoid degradation was observed. The extraction efficiencies were determined with a wide range of pure solvents and mixtures thereof. Two empirical non-linear equations were used to correlate extraction percentages for each family of compounds with the Hildebrand solubility parameter (δT) and the polarity index of the solvents (PI). Thresholds of δT and PI of around 20 MPa1/2 and 6, respectively, were determined for the extraction of amphidinols, consistent with antiproliferative activity measurements.

Abstract
Humans are no strangers to the consumption of microalgae as already in the sixteenth century Spirulina was harvested from Lake Texcoco and consumed in markets in Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City). Nowadays, microalgae are being incorporated into many food formulations. Most of these use microalgae as a marketing strategy or as a colouring agent. However, Spirulina (and compounds derived thereof) show potential for being used as ingredients in the development of novel functional foods, which are one of the top trends in the food industry. Several human intervention studies demonstrated the potential of Spirulina for being used in the prevention or treatment of disorders related to metabolic syndrome. The aim of the current paper was to review current and potential applications of this microalga in the food and functional food industries. Health benefits associated with consuming Spirulina and/or some of the most important compounds derived from Spirulina were also discussed.
