Abstract
Polyphenols, polysaccharides, and proteins are essential nutrients and functional substances present in food, and when present together these components often interact with each other to influence their structure and function. Proteins and polysaccharides are also excellent carrier materials for polyphenols. In this context, this study investigated the non-covalent interactions between taxifolin (TAX), Lentinus edodes mycelia polysaccharide (LMP), and β-casein (β-CN). β-CN and LMP spontaneously formed nanocomplexes by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. The quenching constant and binding constant were (1.94 ± 0.02) × 1013 L mol-1 s-1 and (3.22 ± 0.17) × 105 L mol-1 at 298 K, respectively. The altered conformation of β-CN, resulting from the binding to LMP, affected the interaction with TAX. LMP significantly enhanced the binding affinity of TAX and β-CN, but did not change the static quenching binding mode. The binding constant for β-CN-TAX was (3.96 ± 0.09) × 1013 L mol-1, and that for the interaction between TAX and β-CN-LMP was (32.06 ± 0.05) × 1013 L mol-1. In summary, β-CN-LMP nanocomplexes have great potential as a nanocarrier for polyphenols, and this study provides a theoretical foundation for the rational design of non-covalent complexes involving LMP and β-CN, both in binary and ternary configurations.

Abstract
With the extensive application of baicalein in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, its clinical and market demand has gradually expanded. But the natural yield of baicalein is very low, and it is mainly prepared by the deglycosylation of baicalin. However, the insolubility of baicalin in water significantly limits the deglycosylation of it under biocatalysis. To make biocatalysis of baicalin more efficient and environmental, a strategy was designed to enhance its water solubility through the solubilization mechanism of endogenous biological macromolecules, and the effect on the activity of glucuronidase was further explored. The results showed that wrapping with Scutellaria baicalensis polysaccharide (SBP) significantly improved the solubility of baicalin in water (the water solubility of baicalin increased by 23 times, BI/SBP = 1/12, w/w). It was not only contributed to the efficient production of baicalein by one-pot method, but also effectively improved the deglycosylation rate of baicalin (increase by 47.04 % in aqueous solution). With the help of the solubilization of endogenous polysaccharide on baicalin in aqueous solution, a green, low-cost and efficient method (one-pot method) was designed to simultaneously extract and enzymatic hydrolyze baicalin to prepare baicalein. Under the same conditions, the yield of one-pot method is 87.17 %, which was much higher than that of the conventional method (29.38 %). In addition, one-pot method with the aid of endogenous polysaccharide could simply and conveniently prepare aglycone of other insoluble natural flavonoids, which has a wide range of industrial application value.

Abstract
Biosorptive treatment with microbial biomass is regarded as an environmentally friendly and effective way to reduce dye contamination in contaminated aquatic environments. Immobilizing microbial cells for use in this process can significantly improve their effectiveness as biosorbents in the water treatment process. The current investigation searches for a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to decolorization by employing a green biocomposite material sorbent system (ZM@GFC) created by immobilizing fungal cells (Gibberella fujikuroi) on maize tassel tissues to efficiently remove Reactive Yellow 2 (RY2) from contaminated water sources. Batch and dynamic flow tests were performed to evaluate the biodecolorization properties of the newly created immobilized biomaterial as well as the effects of several essential operating conditions factors on the sorption behavior. Biosorption yields of 95.7% and 90.0% in batch and dynamic modes were achieved for experimental dye decolorization. The biosorption of RY2 by ZM@GFC occurred fast and achieved equilibrium within 60 min. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model elucidated the dye biosorption onto ZM@GFC. The Langmuir model provided a more accurate representation of the results than the Freundlich model. At the same time, Redlich-Peterson isotherm demonstrated the best level of agreement with the experimental data. These findings indicate that the biosorption mechanism predominantly involved the formation of a monolayer covering and that the energy properties of the ZM@GFC surface were uniform. The breakthrough capacity at the exhaustion time was 537.32 mg g-1. The predicted cost of generating ZM@GFC was anticipated to be 61.03 USD/kg. The investigations on safe disposal demonstrated that the biosorption process did not generate any secondary pollution. In conclusion, using maize tassel tissue as an immobilized decolorization agent offers a possible method for removing reactive azo dye pollutants from the aquatic medium that is both economical and environmentally benign.

Abstract
Seedless chestnut rose (Rosa sterilis S. D. Shi, RS) is a fresh type of R. roxburghii Tratt with copious functional components in its fruit. Polysaccharides are recognized as one of the vital bioactive compounds in RS fruits, but their antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties have not been extensively explored. Hence, in this study, accelerated solvent extraction (RSP-W), citric acid (RSP-C), 5% sodium hydroxide/0.05% sodium borohydride (RSP-A), and 0.9% sodium chloride (RSP-S) solution extraction were individually utilized to obtain RS fruit polysaccharides. The physicochemical properties, structural characteristics, and biological activities were then compared. Results indicated that extraction methods had significant influences on the extraction yield, uronic acid content, monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, particle size, thermal stability, triple-helical structure, and surface morphology of RSPs apart from the major linkage bands and crystalline characteristics. The bioactivity tests showed that the RSP-S, which had the greatest amount of uronic acid and a comparatively lower molecular weight, exhibited more potent antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory property. Furthermore, all RSPs inhibited α-glucosidase through a mixed-type manner and quenched their fluorescence predominantly via a static quenching mechanism, with RSP-S showing the highest binding efficiency. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for utilizing RSPs as functional ingredients in food industries.

Abstract
The impacts of four extraction techniques, including hot water, ultrasonic-assisted, complex enzyme-assisted and acid-assisted methods, on the morphological, physicochemical properties and bioactivities of Asparagus cochinchinensis (poly)saccharides (EACP, WACP, UACP, and AACP) were investigated and compared. The four samples were mainly composed of glucose, fructose, and galactose with molar ratios of 50.8:22.7:4.4 for WACP, 53.9:26.0:5.3 for UACP, 35.6:14.1:21.4 for AACP and 45.0:15.6:9.0 for EACP, respectively. The rheological result showed that ACPs were non-Newtonian fluids. EACP with high purity (97.65 %) had good DPPH, O2- and ABTS+ radical scavenging activities, and significantly promoted the proliferation of the RAW264.7 cells at low concentration. UACP had good Fe2+ chelating ability, radical (DPPH, O2- and OH) scavenging activities, which might be attributed to the existence of triple-helix structure. AACP had high yield, molecular weight (17,477.2 Da), high crystallinity (23.33 %), and good radical (OH and ABTS+) scavenging activities. All four significantly stimulated the transcript expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6, as determined by RT-PCR. These results suggest that the exploitation and utilization of non-inulin (poly)saccharides extracted by ultrasonic-assisted, complex enzyme-assisted and acid-assisted extraction methods are potentially valuable as effective and natural immune adjuvants and antioxidants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the impact of the long noncoding RNA LINC00958 on cellular activity and oxidative stress in osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS We performed bioinformatics analysis via StarBase and luciferase reporter assays to predict and validate the interactions between LINC00958 and miR-214-3p and between miR-214-3p and FOXM1. The expression levels of LINC00958, miR-214-3p, and FOXM1 were measured by qRT-PCR and western blotting. To assess effects on CHON-001 cells, we performed MTT proliferation assays, evaluated cytotoxicity with a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, and examined apoptosis through flow cytometry. Additionally, we measured the levels of apoptosis-related proteins, including BAX and BCL2, using western blotting. The secretion of inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) was measured using ELISA. RESULTS Our findings confirmed that LINC00958 is a direct target of miR-214-3p. LINC00958 expression was upregulated but miR-214-3p expression was downregulated in both OA cells and IL-1β-stimulated CHON-001 cells compared to the corresponding control cells. Remarkably, miR-214-3p expression was further reduced after miR-214-3p inhibitor treatment but increased following LINC00958-siRNA stimulation. Silencing LINC00958 significantly decreased its expression, and this effect was reversed by miR-214-3p inhibitor treatment. Notably, LINC00958-siRNA transfection alleviated the IL-1β-induced inflammatory response, as evidenced by the increased cell viability, reduced LDH release, suppression of apoptosis, downregulated BAX expression, and elevated BCL2 levels. Moreover, LINC00958 silencing led to reduced secretion of inflammatory factors from IL-1β-stimulated CHON-001 cells. The opposite results were observed in the miR-214-3p inhibitor-transfected groups. Furthermore, in CHON-001 cells, miR-214-3p directly targeted FOXM1 and negatively regulated its expression. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that downregulating LINC00958 mitigates IL-1β-induced injury in CHON-001 cells through the miR-214-3p/FOXM1 axis. These results imply that LINC00958 plays a role in OA development and may be a valuable therapeutic target for OA.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are known to confer protection against glycolipid metabolism disorders (GMD) by regulating intestinal flora. In this study, a heterogeneous acidic heteropolysaccharide with high molecular weight mainly composed of fructose was isolated from Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (AMP). Supplementation with AMP was shown to improve diet-induced GMD in a rat model, including decreasing the levels of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, and glucose, and improving hepatic lipidosis and islet cells morphologies. AMP-treated rats also exhibited modified intestinal flora with enrichments of intestinal Lactobacillus and Rothia species, which was accompanied by increased tryptophan metabolites such as indole-3-propionic acid, indole, tryptamine, and tryptophol. These metabolites promote the expression of intestinal aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in nuclear fractions. AhR activation increased the expression levels of IL-22 and GLP-1 proteins and mRNA. IL-22 reduced systemic LPS by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins, antimicrobial peptides, and mucin to ameliorate intestinal barrier function, and activated the hepatic IL-22R/Stat3/Acox1 signaling pathway to improve lipid metabolism. GLP-1 activated the pancreatic GLP-1R/p-CREB signaling pathway to ameliorate β-cell injury and improve insulin resistance. Therefore, the intestinal microbial-tryptophan metabolism-AhR pathway was deduced to be a mechanism by which this polysaccharide improves GMD.

Abstract
Polysaccharides derived from Auricularia auricula exhibit diverse biological activities and hold significant potential for commercial utilization as functional food ingredients. In this investigation, polysaccharides from A. auricula were obtained using six extraction techniques (ammonium oxalate solution extraction, sodium hydroxide solution extraction, hot water extraction, pectinase and cellulase-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction). Subsequently, a comprehensive comparison was conducted to evaluate their physicochemical properties and biological functionalities. The ammonium oxalate solution extraction method yielded a higher extraction rate (11.76%) and polysaccharide content (84.12%), as well as a higher uronic acid content (10.13%). Although the six Auricularia polysaccharides had different molecular weight distributions, monosaccharide molar ratios, similar monosaccharide compositions, and characteristic functional groups of polysaccharides, they exhibited different surface morphology. In vitro assays showed that polysaccharides extracted by ammonium oxalate solution possessed good scavenging ability against DPPH free radical, hydroxyl free radical and superoxide anion free radical as well as reduction power of iron ion. At the same time, both polysaccharides extracted by ammonium oxalate solution and sodium hydroxide solution promoted NO production in mouse macrophages along with the secretion of cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. These results indicated significant differences in the structure and characteristics among Auricularia polysaccharides prepared by various extraction methods, which may be related to the variety or origin of A. auricula; furthermore, their bioactivities varied accordingly in vitro assays where the ammonium oxalate solution extraction method was found more beneficial for obtaining high-quality bioactive Auricularia polysaccharides.

Abstract
Rapeseed meal (RSM) is the by-product of rapeseed processing that enriches phenolic compounds. However, the comprehensive characterization of its phenolic substances in terms of composition and potential activities remains incomplete, leading to limited utilization in the food industry. In this study, the phenolic profile from RSM (referred to as RMP) was identified, and their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase were investigated. UPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that a total of 466 phenolic compounds were detected in RMP. The primary components were sinapic acid (SA), caffeic acid (CA), salicylic acid (SAA), and astragalin (AS). Multispectral approaches demonstrated significant inhibitory capacity of RMP against α-glucosidase with a half inhibition value (IC50) of 0.32 mg/mL, with a stronger inhibition compared to CA/SAA/AS (IC50: 4.0, 5.9, and 0.9 mg/mL) in addition to the previously reported SA, suggesting a synergistic effect. Both RMP and CA/SAA/AS altered the secondary structure of α-glucosidase to quench its intrinsic fluorescence. Molecular simulation results revealed that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces primarily contributed to the interaction between CA/SAA/AS and α-glucosidase, as well as verified the stability of the binding process over the entire simulation duration. The ADMET analysis showed that CYP2D6 was not inhibited by CA/SAA/AS, which had no AMES toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and skin sensitization. This finding suggests the potential of RMP against α-glucosidase for the treatment of diabetes.

Abstract
A novel phenylboronic acid and amino bifunctional modified silica gel (SiO2-NH2-FPBA) was prepared, which was 30-80 μm, had a pore size of 8.69 nm, a specific surface area of 206.89 m2/g, was stable at low temperature, and contained 0.4793 mmol/g of the phenylboronic acid group and 1.6377 mmol/g of the amino group. It was used to develop a rapid separation method for phenolic acids. The results showed that it could adsorb 93.64 mg/g caffeic acid, 89.35 mg/g protocatechuic acid and 79.66 mg/g gallic acid. The adsorption process was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.99), and fitted the Langmuir isotherm model well (R2 > 0.99). CH3COOH could effectively desorb phenolic acids (>90%) and did not destroy their structures. When SiO2-NH2-FPBA was added to crude extract of Clerodendranthus spicatus, 93.24% of the phenolic acids could be captured, and twenty-two kinds of phenolic acids were identified by Q Exactive HF LC-MS. Furthermore, the isolated phenolic acids from Clerodendranthus spicatus possessed great DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radicals scavenging activities and ferric reducing power. They also demonstrated effective inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities (IC50 = 110.63 ± 3.67 μg/mL and 64.76 ± 0.30 μg/mL, respectively). The findings indicate that SiO2-NH2-FPBA has significant potential in practical applications of separating active constituents from natural resources.

Abstract
The inhibition mechanism of shitake mushroom polysaccharides (Lentinula edodes polysaccharides, LEP) against α-glucosidase was studied by enzyme kinetic assay, fluorescence quenching and molecular docking. The effect of LEP on glucose transport of digested starch was investigated via an in vitro digestion/Caco-2 transwell model. LEP exhibited a stronger inhibiting effect (IC50 = 0.66 mg/mL) than acarbose and presented a non-competitive inhibition mechanism. The interaction between LEP and α-glucosidase primarily involved electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. Molecular docking modelling showed that the four structures of LEP were bound to the allosteric tunnel or adjacent pocket of α-glucosidase via electrostatic force and hydrogen bonds. The (1 → 6)-linkages in LEP structures favoured its binding affinity to the α-glucosidase. The α-glucosidase inhibiting activity of LEP was also found to emanate from the reduction in glucose transport of digested starch as deducted from the in vitro digestion/Caco-2 transwell data. The release of glucose from digested starch cooked with LEP was significantly reduced (33.7%) compared to the digested starch without LEP. The findings from the current study suggest that LEP could be a promising ingredient to inhibit α-glucosidase activity as well as control the level of postprandial blood glucose when incorporated into starchy foods.

Abstract
The structure characteristics, functional properties, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities of pectins extracted from feijoa peel with water (FP-W), acid (FP-A) and alkali (FP-B) were investigated. Results showed that the feijoa peel pectins (FPs) were mainly composed of galacturonic acid, arabinose, galactose and rhamnose. FP-W and FP-A had higher proportion of homogalacturonan domain, degree of esterification and molecular weight (for main component) than FP-B; FP-B owned the highest yield, protein and polyphenol contents. FP-W had a compact and smooth surface morphology unlike FP-A and FP-B. FP-W and FP-A had better thermal stability than FP-B. The rheological analysis suggested that the FPs exhibited pseudoplastic fluid behavior, and the elastic characteristics were dominant. Results showed that FP-W and FP-B had superior antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities than FP-A. According to correlation analysis, monosaccharide composition, sugar ratios and degree of acetylation were chief factors affecting the functional properties, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities of the FPs.

Abstract
Corn silk (CS) extracts are reported to contain flavonoids (appx. 59.65 mg quercetin/g), polysaccharides (appx. 58.75 w.%), steroids (appx. 38.3 × 10-3 to 368.9 × 10-3 mg/mL), polyphenols (appx. 77.89 mg/GAE/g) and other functional biological substances. This study investigated the antioxidant activity of corn silk extracts related to their functional compounds. The radical scavenging effect of corn silk extracts was evaluated by the spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS•+) free radical measurement, ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power, and copper ion reductive capacity. It was found that the maturity stage of CS plant materials and the applied extraction procedure of their bioactive compounds have a profound effect on the radical scavenging capacity. Differences in the antioxidant activity of the studied corn silk samples based on their maturity were also confirmed. The strongest DPPH radical scavenging effect was observed for the corn silk mature stage (CS-M)stage (CS-MS) (65.20 ± 0.90)%, followed by the silky stage (CS-S) (59.33 ± 0.61)% and the milky stage (CS-M) (59.20 ± 0.92)%, respectively. In general, the final maturity stage (CS-MS) provided the most potent antioxidant effect, followed by the earliest maturity stage (CS-S) and the second maturity stage (CS-M).

Abstract
Gellan gum (GG) is used in many industries. Here, we obtained a low molecular weight GG (L-GG) directly produced by M155, the high-yield mutant strain of Sphingomonas paucimobilis ATCC 31461, which was selected using UV-ARTP combined mutagenesis. The molecular weight of L-GG was 44.6 % lesser than that of the initial GG (I-GG), and the GG yield increased by 24 %. The monosaccharide composition and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopic patterns of L-GG were similar to those of I-GG, which indicated that the decrease in the molecular weight of L-GG was probably because of reduction in the degree of polymerization. In addition, microstructural analysis revealed that the surface of L-GG was rougher, with smaller pores and tighter network, than that of I-GG. L-GG showed low hardness, gumminess, and chewiness, which are indicative of better taste. The results of rheological analysis revealed that the L-GG solution is a typical non-Newtonian fluid with low viscoelasticity, which exhibited stable dynamic viscoelasticity within 20-65 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of direct biosynthesis of low molecular weight GG during fermentation, which will reduce the manufacturing costs. Our observations provide a reference for precise and expanded applications of GG.

Abstract
Antitumor, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and immunomodulatory properties are all exhibited by maize polysaccharides. With the increasing sophistication of maize polysaccharide extraction methods, enzymatic method is no longer limited to a single enzyme to extract polysaccharides, and is more often used in combination with ultrasound or microwave, or combination with different enzymes. Ultrasound has a good cell wall-breaking effect, making it easier to dislodge lignin and hemicellulose from the cellulose surface of the maize husk. The "water extraction and alcohol precipitation" method is the simplest but most resource- and time-consuming process. However, the "ultrasound-assisted extraction" and "microwave-assisted extraction" methods not only compensate for the shortcoming, but also increase the extraction rate. Herein, the preparation, structural analysis, and activities of maize polysaccharides were analyzed and discussed.

Rapeseed oil is rich in active phenolic compounds and seed oil is a major source of liposoluble inhibitors to these enzymes. However, it remains unclear about the interaction of phenolic compounds in rapeseed oil with α-amylase/α-glucosidase. This study found that the important phenolic compounds from rapeseed oil (Sinapic acid, SA; canolol, CAO; canolol dimer, CAO dimer) possessed effective inhibition performance against α-amylase and α-glucosidase. CAO showed the lowest and highest inhibitory effect, respectively. In the kinetics studies, the inhibition mechanism of SA/CAO/CAO dimer against α-glucosidase was non-competitive, exhibiting a different way from α-amylase. Fluorescence quenching spectra implied that the static processes were responsible for the spontaneous binding between the compounds and enzymes. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) displayed these compounds-induced conformation alterations of α-amylase/α-glucosidase. Molecular docking revealed that SA/CAO/CAO dimer decreased the catalytic efficiency of α-amylase/α-glucosidase through hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic force, or π-π interaction. Molecular dynamics matched well with the experimental and docking results regarding the inhibitory behaviors and interactions toward α-amylase/α-glucosidase. These results demonstrated the potential benefits of phenolic compounds from rapeseed oil in antidiabetic-related activities.

Abstract
Zea mays (Z. mays) is one of the main cereal crops in the world, and it's by-products have exhibited medicinal properties to explore. This article intends to review the chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of by-products of Z. mays (corn silks, roots, bract, stems, bran, and leaves) which support the therapeutic potential in the treatment of different diseases, with emphasis on the natural occurring compounds and detailed pharmacological developments. Based on this review, 231 natural compounds are presented. Among them, flavonoids, terpenes, phenylpropanoids, and alkaloids are the most frequently reported. The by-products of Z. mays possess diuretic effects, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, plant protection activity, and other activities. This article reviewed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of Z. mays for comprehensive quality control and the safety and effectiveness to enhance future application.

Abstract
To develop novel α-glucosidase inhibitors, a series of chromone-based phenylhydrazone and benzoylhydrazone derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase. The target compounds were characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and high-resolution mass spectra. Some of the compounds showed a varying degree of α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 6.59 ± 0.09 to 158.55 ± 0.87 μM. Among them, compound 5c (IC50 = 6.59 ± 0.09 μM) was the most potent inhibitor by comparison with positive control acarbose (IC50 = 685.11 ± 7.46 μM). Enzyme kinetic, fluorescence analysis, circular dichroism spectra, and molecular docking techniques were employed to explain the underlying molecular mechanisms of 5c inhibition on α-glucosidase. In vivo sucrose-loading test showed that 5c could suppress the rise of blood glucose levels after loading sucrose in normal Kunming mice. The cytotoxicity assay indicated that 5c exhibited low cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Corn silk is commonly consumed in teas, food ingredients, and herbal medicines. Several varieties of corn silk are grown in different habitats in China. However, as information regarding their phytochemistry and genetic diversity is limited, their medicinal potential has not been utilized thoroughly. Thus, we aimed to use a combination of DNA barcoding based on specific primer ITSC sequences and ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with linear trap quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS) approach for identifying and evaluating corn silk. ITSC barcoding helped us to identify that 52 samples could be classified into 7 groups of corn silk varieties, but the widely used nrITS and psbA-trnH barcodes failed to identify these varieties. UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS was used to study the components in alcohol extracts derived from different corn silk varieties, and the detected chemical components were analyzed via bioinformatics techniques. We proposed 199 components using untargeted UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS-based metabolomics analysis and identified 67 components. PCA and OPLS-DA analysis revealed two distinct chemotypes by selecting 27 components that could act as difference indicators. KEGG analysis showed that the 199 components were enriched in 12 metabolic pathways. The results showed that corn silk is rich in many types of chemicals and DNA barcoding is better than UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS in distinguishing the differences between different varieties of corn silk. Our findings provide new insights into the chemical and molecular characteristics of different varieties of corn silk, which play a crucial role in the utilization of corn silk resources.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the structural characterization, conformational properties, and hepatoprotective activity of corn silk acidic polysaccharide (CSP-50E). CSP-50E with molecular weights of 1.93 × 105 g/mol was composed of Gal, Glc, Rha, Ara, Xyl, Man and uronic acid with a weight ratio of 12:25:1:2:2:5:21. Structural analysis with methylation indicated that CSP-50E mainly contained T-Manp, 4-substituted-D-Galp/GalpA, and 4-substituted-D-Glcp. CSP-50E presented random coils conformation in an aqueous solution based on the analysis of HPSEC. In vitro experiments showed that CSP-50E exhibited significant hepatoprotective effects, CSP-50E reduce IL-6, TNF-α content, and AST, ALT activity to protect ethanol-induced damage liver cells (HL-7702), while the polysaccharide functioned mainly through the caspase cascade and mediate the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. In this study, we describe a novel acidic polysaccharide from corn silk with hepatoprotective activity that facilitates the development and utilization of corn silk resources.

Abstract
In this study, an acid polysaccharide (AABP-1B) was extracted from the rhizome of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge and purified using 60 % alcohol precipitation and DEAE-52 cellulose. The molecular weight of AABP-1B was 105 kDa, and it consisted of mannose (Man), rhamnose (Rha), galacturonic acid (GalA), glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), and arabinose (Ara) in a ratio of 6.3:1.3:1.1:0.2:0.4:0.7. Methylation and NMR analyses revealed that the backbone of AABP-1 consists of 4)-β-D-Manp-(1 and 4)-2-O-acetyl-β-D-Manp-(1. In addition, the biological activity assays showed that AABP-1B not only displays potential antioxidant activity but also exhibits the α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory effect. Moreover, AABP-1B enhanced glucose consumption and glycogen synthesis in insulin-resistant (IR) HepG2 cells. These results suggest that AABP-1B has potential hypoglycemic activity.

Abstract
For thousands of years, corn silk has been widely used as an antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic and for other effects, but there is a lack of studies that correlate the extracts of flavonoid composition with their biological activities. Thus, the objectives of this study were to optimize the conditions for extracting flavonoids, identify flavonoids, and correlate the flavonoid composition with the biological activities in corn silk. The response surface experiments showed that the highest flavonoid content was predicted at 45.321 min, 57.349°C, 26.089 mL/g, and 71.269%, respectively. The verification experiment results under these optimized conditions showed an ultrasonic time of 45 min, an ultrasonic temperature of 57°C, a liquid-to-material ratio of 26, and an ethanol volume fraction of 70%. No significant differences (the relative error is 4.378%) were observed between the theoretical and experimental TFC values, indicating that the developed models were accurate. Under these optimum extraction conditions, 20 major compounds were identified and quantified by UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS. Furthermore, these optimum ethanol extracts of corn silk are effective against Bacillus subtilis and hypoglycemic activity compared with the traditional heating reflux extraction method. Six corn silk components seem to be the main contributors to the inhibitory effect against Bacillus subtilis and hyperglycemia activities. These results are useful for the application of corn silk in the food or pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) are a new food resource, rich in functional factors. MOL polysaccharides are important active macromolecules within MOL. However, there are problems, such as low extraction rates and lack of evidence for functional activity. Therefore, in this experiment, single-factor experiments were carried out using MOL powder as the raw material, and the Plackett-Burman test was used to screen the significantly influential test factors. The extraction process of MOL polysaccharide was optimized by response surface methodology. The insulin resistance alleviating activity of MOLP polysaccharides was initially explored. The results showed that the extraction of Moringa oleifera leaves crude polysaccharides (MOLP) by ultrasonic assisted cellulase enzymatic digestion was (17.03 ± 1.03)%, and the obtained MOLP was a crude polysaccharide with an average molecular weight (Mw) of 279.48 kDa, consisting of fucose, rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid. MOLP had an IC50 value of 8.02 mg/mL for α-glucosidase and scavenging activity against free radicals such as ABTS, DPPH, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide anion with an IC50 value of 0.21 mg/mL 0.31 mg/mL 0.97 mg/mL 0.49 mg/mL. At the same time, MOLP significantly enhanced the glucose consumption, glycogen synthesis, CAT, SOD, GSH-Px activity, and reduced the MDA and ROS content in high glucose-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 (IR-HepG2) cells. This experiment improved the extraction rate of MOLP and demonstrated that MOLP has antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, which can alleviate the insulin resistance of high glucose-induced HepG2 cells. It provides partial data support for the possible hypoglycemic effect of MOLP by alleviating oxidative stress, and also provides new ideas for the in-depth study of basic research and industrial application of MOLP.

Abstract
To optimize the ultrasonic extraction process of polysaccharides from Dendrobium nobile Lindl. (DNP), the extraction method was conducted through a single-factor test and the response-surface methodology (RSM). With the optimal extraction process (liquid–solid ratio of 40 mL/g, ultrasonic time of 30 min, and ultrasonic power of 400 W), the maximum extraction yield was 5.16 ± 0.41%. DNP1 and DNP2 were then fractionated via DEAE-QFF and Sephacryl S-300 HR chromatography. The molecular weight (Mw) of DNP1 was identified as 67.72 kDa, composed of Man (75.86 ± 0.05%) and Glc (24.14 ± 0.05%), and the Mw of DNP2 was 37.45 kDa, composed of Man (72.32 ± 0.03%) and Glc (27.68 ± 0.03%). Anti-inflammatory assays results showed that as DNPs were 200 μg/mL, and the contents of NO, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells were about 13.39% and 13.39%, 43.88% and 43.51%, 17.80% and 15.37%, 13.84% and 20.66%, and 938.85% and 907.77% of those in control group, respectively. It was indicated that DNP1 and DNP2 inhibited the inflammatory response of RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS via suppressing the level of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) and promoting the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10). Therefore, DNP1 and DNP2 have potential applications in the treatment of inflammatory injury.

Abstract
Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. is a traditional Chinese herb, which has been proven to have excellent antibacterial activity. In this work, we firstly extracted the polysaccharides from the leaves of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. (LLPs), and explored their antibacterial activity and related mechanisms. The experimental results show that LLPs are a good antibacterial agent, which can damage the cell structure of bacteria and lead to the leakage of intracellular lysates. Compared with Escherichia coli (E. coli), LLPs showed better inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Furthermore, the administration of LLPs not only led to the upregulation of the levels of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (F-1,6-P) and citric acid in the glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways in bacteria, but also resulted in the down-regulation of the levels of oxaloacetate (OAA) and 1,3-diphosphoglycerate (1,3-BPG). This study confirmed that LLPs have good antibacterial activity, and broaden the application of the leaves of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. in the antibacterial field. It provides ideas for exploring the antibacterial mechanism of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine through metabolomics.

Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease, whereas α-glucosidases are key enzymes involved in the metabolism of starch and glycogen. There is a long history of the use of mulberry leaf (the leaf of Morus alba) as an antidiabetic herb in China, and we found that chalcomoracin, one of the specific Diels–Alder adducts in mulberry leaf, had prominent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and has the potential to be a substitute for current hypoglycemic drugs such as acarbose, which have severe gastrointestinal side effects. In this study, chalcomoracin was effectively isolated from mulberry leaves, and its α-glucosidase inhibition was studied via enzymatic kinetics, isothermal titration (ITC) and molecular docking. The results showed that chalcomoracin inhibited α-glucosidase through both competitive and non-competitive manners, and its inhibitory activity was stronger than that of 1-doxymycin (1-DNJ) but slightly weaker than that of acarbose. ITC analysis revealed that the combination of chalcomoracin and α-glucosidase was an entropy-driven spontaneous reaction, and the molecular docking results also verified this conclusion. During the binding process, chalcomoracin went into the “pocket” of α-glucosidase via hydrophobic interactions, and it is linked with residues Val544, Asp95, Ala93, Gly119, Arg275 and Pro287 by hydrogen bonds. This study provided a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and a theoretical basis for the discovery of novel candidates for α-glycosidase inhibitors.

Abstract
Non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) have been reported to exert therapeutic potential on managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Various mechanisms have been proposed; however, several studies have not considered the correlations between the anti-T2DM activity of NSPs and their molecular structure. Moreover, the current understanding of the role of NSPs in T2DM treatment is mainly based on in vitro and in vivo data, and more human clinical trials are required to verify the actual efficacy in treating T2DM. The related anti-T2DM mechanisms of NSPs, including regulating insulin action, promoting glucose metabolism and regulating postprandial blood glucose level, anti-inflammatory and regulating gut microbiota (GM), are reviewed. The structure-function relationships are summarized, and the relationships between NSPs structure and anti-T2DM activity from clinical trials are highlighted. The development of anti-T2DM medication or dietary supplements of NSPs could be promoted with an in-depth understanding of the multiple regulatory effects in the treatment/intervention of T2DM.

Abstract
Tricholoma mongolicum Imai is an edible fungus rich in various health-promoting compounds, such as polysaccharides, polypeptides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, etc., and among them, polysaccharides have gotten more attention in recent research trends. This study explored the extraction of polysaccharides from T. mongolicum Imai by five extraction methods, including hot water extraction, ultrasound extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, 0.1 M HCL extraction, and 0.1 M NaOH extraction. The effects of these extraction methods on the yield, chemical structure, apparent morphology, and the antioxidant activities of Tricholoma mongolicum Imai polysaccharides (TMIPs) were investigated in this study. The data showed that 0.1 M NaOH extraction produced the highest extraction yield compared to the other extraction methods. The results of high-performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that different extraction methods had significant effects on the molecular weight and morphology of TMIPs. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the extraction methods had no significant difference in functional groups, crystal structure, and thermal stability of TMIPs. The antioxidant activity of TMIPs extracted by ultrasound extraction was more prominent among the five polysaccharides, which might be related to a large number of low-molecular-weight components in molecular weight distribution.

Abstract
In this paper, a pectin polysaccharide AP2-c with molecular weight 6.69 × 105 Da was obtained from the lignified okra. The monosaccharide composition analysis indicated that AP2-c consisted of galactose, rhamnose and galacturonic acid in a molar ratio of 2.3: 1.5: 1.5. The structural characterization indicated that the main chain of AP2-c was composed of →2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→ and →4)-α-D-GalAp-(1→. →2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→ was branched at position O-4 and the branched chain consisted of →3,6)-β-D-Galp-(1→, →6)-β-D-Galp-(1→, α-L-Rhap-(1→ and β-D-Galp-(1→. AP2-c could inhibit the mRNA expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and iNOS in LPS-induced macrophages with a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, AP2-c inhibited the phosphorylation of IκB and p65 via NF-κB pathway. The results indicated that AP2-c had obvious anti-inflammatory activity. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: When okra seeds were harvested, lignified okra was always abandoned as waste and had not been fully used for exploitation. Nevertheless, it accounted for more than half of the total plant's weight and was abundant in cell wall polysaccharides, which were the main components of okra to perform a variety of biological functions. In the research, the purified pectin polysaccharide AP2-c was obtained from lignified okra and its physicochemical properties, structural features and anti-inflammatory activity were systematically researched. It was detected that AP2-c exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by blocking NF-κB pathway and thus lowering the expression of related inflammatory factors. The results have significant implications for the value-added application of okra and its processing side products can obviously help to promote the anti-inflammatory application of AP2-c and avoid wasting resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lotus seedpods are an agricultural by-product of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.), which is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia and Australia. Most lotus seedpods are considered waste and are abandoned or incinerated, resulting in significant waste of resources and heavy environmental pollution. For recycling lotus seedpods, the extraction optimization, physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and α-glucosidase inhibitory effect of the polysaccharides contained therein were investigated in this study. RESULTS Hot water extraction of lotus seedpod polysaccharides was optimized by using a response surface methodology combined with a Box-Behnken design, with the optimum conditions being as follows: a liquid/solid ratio of 25.0 mL g-1 , an extraction temperature of 98.0 °C, and an extraction time of 138.0 min. Under these conditions, an experimental yield of 5.88 ± 0.06% was obtained. Physicochemical analyses suggested that lotus seedpod polysaccharides belong to acidic heteropolysaccharides and are principally composed of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, and galacturonic acid. The polysaccharides content has a broad molecular weight distribution (2.15 × 105 to 1.77 × 107 Da), an α-configuration, and mainly possesses smooth and sheet-like structures. Biological evaluations showed that the polysaccharides possessed good scavenging activity on 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrozyl, and hydroxyl radicals, and exerted an obvious inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase activity. Moreover, the polysaccharides content was determined to be a mixed-type noncompetitive inhibitor of α-glucosidase. CONCLUSION The results indicate that lotus seedpod polysaccharides have potential as natural antioxidants and hypoglycaemic substitutes. This study provides the theoretical bases for the exploitation and application of polysaccharides from lotus seedpod by-product resources. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This study investigated the antioxidant activities, enzyme inhibitory activities and the interaction mechanisms of artocarpin and α-mangostin on α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Results showed that artocarpin and α-mangostin had obvious antioxidant activities and inhibitory activities on α-glucosidase and α-amylase. The inhibitions of the two compounds on α-glucosidase were reversible and non-competitive according to the kinetics studies. Fluorescence intensity measurements indicated that the interaction mechanisms between the inhibitors and the two enzymes were static processes. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) analysis showed that the bindings between the inhibitors and the enzymes complex were all spontaneous. The main driving forces between α-mangostin and artocarpin with α-glucosidase might be hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, respectively. While the forces between the two inhibitors and α-amylase might be hydrophobic interactions. Furthermore, molecular docking results showed that artocarpin and α-mangostin could bind to the allosteric site of the two enzymes, except for artocarpin in the active site pocket of α-amylase. All the results indicated that artocarpin and α-mangostin might be promising candidates for hypoglycemic functional products.

Abstract
Covalent complexes of peanut protein isolate (PPI) and corn silk polysaccharide (CSP) (PPI-CSP) were prepared using an ultrasonic-assisted moist heat method to improve the functional properties of peanut protein isolate. The properties of the complexes were affected by the level of corn silk polysaccharide. By increasing the polysaccharide addition, the grafting degree first increased, and then tended to be flat (the highest was 38.85%); the foaming, foam stability, and solubility were also significantly improved. In a neutral buffer, the solubility of the sample with a protein/polysaccharide ratio of 2:1 was 73.69%, which was 1.61 times higher than that of PPI. As compared with PPI, the complexes had higher thermal stability and lower surface hydrophobicity. High addition of CSP could made the secondary structure of PPI change from ordered α-helix to disordered β-sheet, β-turn, and random coil structure, and the complex conformation become more flexible and loose. The results of multiple light scattering showed that the composite solution exhibited high stability, which could be beneficial to industrial processing, storage, and transportation. Therefore, the functional properties of peanut protein isolate glycosylation products could be regulated by controlling the amount of polysaccharide added.

Abstract
In this study, a high-efficiency and non-pollution extraction procedure, ultrasound-assisted technique with deep eutectic solvents (DESs), was applied for extraction of polysaccharides from Morchella importuna (MIP-D). The results exhibited that the system of DES was: mole ratio between choline chloride and oxalic acid of 2:1, water content of 90% (v/v), and the optimal extraction parameters were as follows: extraction time of 31.2 min, extraction temperature of 62.1°C, and the liquid–solid ratio of 32.5:1 (v/w). Under these extraction parameters, the extraction yield of MIP-D was 4.5 times higher than hot water extraction (HWE) method and had higher carbohydrate (85.27%) and sulfate contents (34.16%). Moreover, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier-transform IR (FTIR) spectrum analysis indicated that MIP-D was comprised of glucosamine, galactose, glucose, and mannose, with molar ratios of 0.39:1.88:3.82:3.91, which contained the pyranose ring skeleton. High-performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC) analysis revealed that MIP-D showed three fractions with molecular weights of 2.6 × 106, 7.3 × 104, and 3.7 × 103 Da, which were lower than those of polysaccharides extracted by HWE. In-vitro tests proved that MIP-D possessed excellent antioxidant and inhibited α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Therefore, DESs (choline chloride-oxalic acid) as a high-efficiency and non-pollution solvent alternative can be applied to the separation of bioactive polysaccharides from Morchella importuna (M. importuna).

Abstract
Chinese herbal polysaccharides (CHPs) are natural polymers composed of monosaccharides, which are widely found in Chinese herbs and work as one of the important active ingredients. Its biological activity is attributed to its complex chemical structure with diverse spatial conformations. However, the structural elucidation is the foundation but a bottleneck problem because the majority of CHPs are heteropolysaccharides with more complex structures. Similarly, the studies on the relationship between structure and function of CHPs are even more scarce. Therefore, this review summarizes the structure-activity relationship of CHPs. Meanwhile, we reviewed the structural elucidation strategies and some new progress especially in the advanced structural analysis methods. The characteristics and applicable scopes of various methods are compared to provide reference for selecting the most efficient method and developing new hyphenated techniques. Additionally, the principle structural modification methods of CHPs and their effects on activity are summarized. The shortcomings, potential breakthroughs, and developing directions of the study of CHPs are discussed. We hope to provide a reference for further research and promote the application of CHPs.

Abstract
In the present study, the purpose is to compare the effect of water extraction and alkali-assisted extraction on the structural characteristics and immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides from Fuzhuan brick tea (FBTPs). The results indicated that water-extracted FBTPs (W-FBTPs) and alkali-extracted FBTPs (A-FBTPs) had similar molecular weights but different monosaccharide compositions, of which A-FBTPs had a higher yield and uronic acid groups corresponding to galacturonic acid (GalA). Moreover, A-FBTPs had stronger ability to promote phagocytic capacity, acid phosphatase activity and nitric oxide (NO) secretion in macrophages in vitro. In the in vivo study, A-FBTPs exhibited a promising effect to adjust the immune imbalance by enhancing the body features, antioxidant activities, immune response and intestinal mucosal barrier in cytoxan (CTX)-induced immunosuppressive mice. Besides, A-FBTP supplementation effectively improved CTX-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, including promoting the abundance of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Lactobacillus) and short chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria (e.g., Lachnospiraceae, Prevotellaceae and Ruminococcaceae), along with reducing the growth of potentially pathogenic microbes (e.g., Desulfovibrionaceae and Helicobacter). These findings suggested that alkaline extraction might be a promising way to obtain high-quality acidic polysaccharides from Fuzhuan brick tea (FBT), and A-FBTPs could be developed as novel potential prebiotics and immunomodulators for further application in food formulations.

Abstract
Sargassum fusiforme polysaccharides (SFPs), including SFP-3-40, SFP-3-60, SFP-3-80, SFP-7-40, SFP-7-60, SFP-7-80, SFP-10-40, SFP-10-60, and SFP-10-80, were extracted at different pH (3, 7, and 10), and then precipitated with graded precipitation of 40%, 60% and 80% (v/v) ethanol solution, respectively. Their physicochemical properties and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity were determined. Results showed that SFPs significantly differed in the contents of total sugar, protein, uronic acid, sulfate, the zeta potential, and molecular weight distribution. SFPs, including SFP-10-40, SFP-10-60, and SFP-10-80, had bigger absolute zeta potential value and higher respective average molecular weight in the same ethanol concentration precipitate. All samples were mainly composed of fucose, glucuronic acid, and mannose with different molar ratios. The extraction pH and precipitation ethanol solution concentration caused little changes in functional groups, but significantly altered surface morphology of SFPs. Congo red test revealed that all polysaccharides were not helical polysaccharides. Rheological measurements indicated that SFPs were pseudoplastic fluids and showed elastic behavior of the gel. Except SFP-3-40 and SFP-3-60, all other samples had a stronger α-glucosidase inhibitory activity than that of acarbose. The inhibition type of SFPs against α-glucosidase varied owing to different extraction pH and precipitation ethyl concentration. This study shows that extraction pH can significantly affect the structure and hypoglycemic activity of SFPs and provide a data support for the scientific use of Sargassum fusiforme in industrial production.

Abstract
In this study, polysaccharides from Evodiae fructus were extracted by water, 0.5 M HCl, 0.5 M NaOH, water + 0.5 M HCl and water + 0.5 M NaOH, which were named as ERP-W, ERP-AC, ERP-AK, ERP-W-AC and ERP-W-AK, respectively. Their physicochemical properties, antioxidant activities and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects were investigated and compared. Physico-chemical analysis showed that they were acidic heteropolysaccharides, which had α- and β-configurations. ERP-W, ERP-AK and ERP-W-AK were mainly composed of Rha, Ara, Gal, Glc and Gal-UA, while ERP-AC and ERP-W-AC were dominantly made up of Rha, Gal and Gal-UA. ERP-AK had the highest yield (24.5%) and the best thermal stability, ERP-AC and ERP-W-AC showed better homogeneity and lower molecular weight (83.6 and 41.6 kDa), and ERP-W possessed the highest neutral sugar content (50.7%) and molecular weight. Biological evaluation indicated that ERP-W, ERP-AK and ERP-W-AK had relatively stronger antioxidant activities, including ABTS, DPPH, OH and O2- radicals scavenging activities, Fe2+ chelating ability and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects. Moreover, these actions were considerably related to their physicochemical properties especially monosaccharide composition and molecular weight. Therefore, polysaccharides extracted by water and alkaline solvents from Evodiae fructus could be developed as promising natural antioxidants and α-glucosidase inhibitors in the food and medicine industries.

Abstract
In this paper, Fe (III), Zn (II), and Cr (III) were used to complex with corn silk polysaccharide (CSP) by classical methods and CSP-Fe, CSP-Zn, and CSP-Cr were successfully synthesized, respectively. The physicochemical properties and structural features were characterized by chemical composition analysis, inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The antioxidant activities and inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase of CSP, CSP-Fe, CSP-Zn, and CSP-Cr were compared. The results showed that the Fe (III), Zn (II), and Cr (III) chelation could change the morphology, conformation, thermostability, and biological activities of CSP. CSP-Zn exhibited higher antioxidant activities and inhibition effects on α-glucosidase than CSP, which suggested that it could be considered as a potential candidate for developing an ingredient of functional foods for antidiabetics.

Abstract
AbstractThis study demonstrated the interaction mechanism of collagen peptides (CPs) with 4-ethylphenol (4-EP), phenol, guaiacol, and 4-ethylguaiacol (4-EG) in the ethanol-water solution. The ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, zeta potential tests and hydrogen nuclear magnetic spectroscopy manifested that CPs interacted with the phenolic compounds. Meanwhile, Isothermal titration calorimetry determination indicated that the CPs was hydrogen bonded with 4-EP in 52 %(v/v) ethanol-water solution, while the hydrophobic forces played a major role in the interaction of CPs with guaiacol and 4-EG, respectively. Moreover, hydrogen and hydrophobic bonds were involved in the interaction between CPs and phenol. Finally, Head Space-solid Phase Microextraction Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry analysis indicated that the content of phenolic compounds in model solution efficiently decreased with the presence of CPs. In the real liquor, it was found that the content of volatile compounds (including phenolic compounds) was obviously decreased after CPs added.

Abstract
Eight extraction technologies were used to extract sweet tea (Lithocarpus litseifolius (Hance) Chun) crude polysaccharides (STPs), and their chemical, structural, and biological properties were studied and compared. Results revealed that the compositions, structures, and biological properties of STPs varied dependent on different extraction technologies. Protein-bound polysaccharides and some hemicellulose could be extracted from sweet tea with diluted alkali solution. STPs extracted by deep-eutectic solvents and diluted alkali solution exhibited the most favorable biological properties. Moreover, according to the heat map, total phenolic content was most strongly correlated with biological properties, indicating that the presence of phenolic compounds in STPs might be the main contributor to their biological properties. To the best of our knowledge, this study reports the chemical, structural, and biological properties of STPs, and the results contribute to understanding the relationship between the chemical composition and biological properties of STPs.

Abstract
Lycium barbarum is widely used as a functional food and medicinal herb to promote health and longevity in China and in some other Asian countries. In modern pharmacological and chemical studies, the most valuable and well-researched component of L. barbarum is a group of unique water-soluble glycoconjugates that are collectively termed Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs). Numerous modern pharmacological studies have revealed that LBPs possess antiaging, antidiabetic, antifibrotic, neuroprotective, and immunomodulation properties, while the immunomodulatory effect is primary and is involved in other activities. However, due to their structural heterogeneity and lack of chromophores, it has long been unclear how LBPs work on the immune system. A few studies have recently provided some insights into the proposed mode of action of LBPs, such as structure-activity relationships, receptor recognition, and gut microbiota modulation of LBPs. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the immunoregulating properties of LBPs and their related mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Malus hupehensis (M. hupehensis), an edible and medicinal plant with significant antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity, has been applied to new resource foods. However, the structural characterization and biological effects of its polysaccharides (MHP) are less known. The optimum extraction parameters to achieve the highest extraction efficiency (47.63%), the yield (1.68%) and purity of MHP (89.6%) by ultrasonic-assisted aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) were obtained under the liquid-to-solid ratio of 23 g/mL, ultrasonic power of 65 W, and ultrasonic time of 33 min. According to the analysis results, MHP was composed of Man, GlcA, Rha, GalA, Glc, Gal, Xyl, Ara, and Fuc, in which Ara and Gal were the main components, and the content of GlcA was the lowest. In in vitro activity analysis, MHP showed a significant antioxidant capacity, and an inhibition activity of α-glucosidase and the advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation in the BSA/Glc reaction model. MHP interacted with α-glucosidase and changed the internal microenvironment of the enzyme, and inhibited the AGEs formation, which provides more evidence for the antihyperglycemic mechanism of MHP. The results suggest that ATPS is an efficient and environmentally friendly solvent system, and M. hupehensis has broad application prospects in functional foods, healthcare products, and pharmaceuticals.
