Abstract
Several studies have examined the association between CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to investigate the interactions between rs1761667 polymorphism and dietary patterns on the cardiometabolic risk factors and the risk of MetS in apparently healthy individuals aged 20-70 years. Food consumption data were acquired using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. CD36 rs1761667 was genotyped by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The gene-diet interaction was detected by the general linear model or logistic regression. Significant or marginally significant interactions were observed between healthy dietary pattern (HDP) and CD36 rs1761667 on weight (P = 0·006), BMI (P = 0·009), waist circumference (P = 0·005), hip circumference (P = 0·06), body muscle percentage (P = 0·02), body fat percentage (P = 0·09), TAG-glucose index (P = 0·057), atherogenic index of plasma (P = 0·07), the risk of MetS (P = 0·02), risk of abdominal obesity (P = 0·02) and elevated blood pressure (P = 0·07). Besides, a gene-diet interaction was detected between the traditional dietary pattern and rs1761667 variants on odds of hypertriglyceridaemia (P = 0·02). The adherence to HDP was associated with a lower weight, BMI and higher odds of HDL-cholesterol only in A-allele carriers. In conclusion, adherence to HDP (a diet with high fibre, fish and dairy products) can be more effective on some cardiometabolic risk factors and risk of MetS components in the A-allele carrier than the GG genotype of rs1761667 polymorphism. However, future studies are required to shed light on this issue.

Abstract
Obesity and overweight represent a growing health problem worldwide. Genes regulating the intake and metabolism of different nutrients can positively or negatively influence the efficacy of nutritional interventions against obesity and its complications. The aim of this study was to assess changes in anthropometric and clinical parameters and the adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) over time in relation to nutrigenetic variants in overweight or obese subjects affected by Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) or dysglycemia, who were included in a nutritional program. A total of 23 subjects were included in this study. Clinical parameters, physical activity levels, and the adherence to a MedDiet were evaluated at baseline, at 6 (T6), and at 12 months (T12) during and after a diet/lifestyle intervention. In a single blood sample from each subject, rs1984112 (A>G) and rs1761667 (G>A) in CD36; rs7950226 (G>A) in BMAL1; and rs1801260 (A>G), rs4864548 (A>G), and rs3736544 (G>A) in CLOCK were genotyped with Real-Time PCR. Significant associations were observed between CD36 rs1761667 and weight (p = 0.025), hip circumference (p = 0.042), triglycerides (p = 0.047), and HbA1c (p = 0.012) at baseline. Moreover, the genotype AA in CD36 rs1761667 was significantly associated with a lower BMI when compared to G carriers at baseline, at T6, and also at T12. In addition, subjects with the AA genotype at CD36 rs1984112 had significantly lower levels of HbA1c (p = 0.027) than the GG and AG genotypes at baseline. These results show that variants in CD36 can have an impact on anthropometric and clinical parameters in overweight or obese subjects affected by T2D or dysglycemia, and that it might influence the success of the diet/lifestyle intervention.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by impaired insulin secretion on a background of insulin resistance (IR). IR and T2DM are associated with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). The mechanisms of IR and atherosclerosis are known to share similar genetic and environmental roots. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) detected at the earliest stages of IR might be the origin of atherosclerosis progression. ED influences the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and their encoding genes. The genes and their single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) act as potential genetic markers of IR and atherosclerosis. This review focuses on the link between IR, T2DM, atherosclerosis, CAD, and the potential genetic markers CHI3L1, CD36, LEPR, RETN, IL-18, RBP-4, and RARRES2 genes.

Abstract
The cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) is one of the main receptors implicated in the pathogenesis of the cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to assess the association between CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism and cardiometabolic risk factors including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose (FBG). PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, web of science, and Google Scholar were searched up to December 2021. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were conducted to explore sources of heterogeneity. Eighteen eligible studies (6317 participants) were included in the study. In the overall analysis, a significant association was found between rs1761667 polymorphism of CD36 and TG in allelic (p < 0.001), recessive (p = 0.001) and homozygous (p = 0.006) models. A relationship between this polymorphism and HDL-C and FBG level was observed in the recessive genetic model. In the subgroup analysis, the A allele was associated with impaired lipid profiles (TC, LDL-C and HDL-C) in the Asian population. The influences of health status, design of the study, confounders, and other sources of heterogeneity should be considered when interpreting present findings. Cohort studies with large sample size and in different ethnicities are needed to confirm the relationship between rs1761667 SNP and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Abstract
CD36 (cluster of differentiation 36) is a membrane protein involved in lipid metabolism and has been linked to pathological conditions associated with metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and dyslipidemia. A case-control study was conducted and included 177 patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 173 control subjects to study the involvement of CD36 gene rs1761667 (G>A) and rs1527483 (C>T) polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of T2DM and dyslipidemia among Jordanian population. Lipid profile, blood sugar, gender and age were measured and recorded. Also, genotyping analysis for both polymorphisms was performed. Following statistical analysis, 10 different neural networks and machine learning (ML) tools were used to predict subjects with diabetes or dyslipidemia. Towards further understanding of the role of CD36 protein and gene in T2DM and dyslipidemia, a protein-protein interaction network and meta-analysis were carried out. For both polymorphisms, the genotypic frequencies were not significantly different between the two groups (p > 0.05). On the other hand, some ML tools like multilayer perceptron gave high prediction accuracy (≥ 0.75) and Cohen's kappa (κ) (≥ 0.5). Interestingly, in K-star tool, the accuracy and Cohen's κ values were enhanced by including the genotyping results as inputs (0.73 and 0.46, respectively, compared to 0.67 and 0.34 without including them). This study confirmed, for the first time, that there is no association between CD36 polymorphisms and T2DM or dyslipidemia among Jordanian population. Prediction of T2DM and dyslipidemia, using these extensive ML tools and based on such input data, is a promising approach for developing diagnostic and prognostic prediction models for a wide spectrum of diseases, especially based on large medical databases.

Abstract
In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight; of which, over 650 million of adults were obese. Genetics and lifestyle play important roles in the development of obesity. Studies have shown that genetic variants contribute in developing obesity; such as FTO and CD36, which regulate metabolism and food preferences. Many researches have also emphasized the importance of lifestyle in obesity prevention. However, the interactions of both factors were still underexplored. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the interaction between FTO-CD36 variants and fat consumption on the metabolic status of healthy Indonesians. Twenty-one females and seventeen males were involved in this cross-sectional study. CD36 rs1761667 and FTO rs9939609 genotypes were identified from blood samples using PCR-RFLP. Data were compared with dietary patterns (24-h food recall), physical activities (IPAQ), medical records, and body compositions (InBody720). Results: CD36 rs1761667 AA and AG group showed higher -but not significant- fat consumption, WHR, and VFA compared to GG. The trend persisted after gender and physical activity adjustment. Meanwhile, FTO rs9939609 AT group showed significant higher WC, WHR and VFA in male subjects after gender and energy balance adjustment: WC (TT: 74.40±3.85, AT: 85.50±5.92, p=0.011), WHR (TT: 0.85±0.02, AT: 0.92±0.04, p=0.010), and VFA (TT: 48.65±10.61, AT: 78.48±15.18, p=0.010). CD36 rs1761667 might be correlated with higher fat consumption and visceral obesity; while FTO rs9939609 showed a significant association with male visceral obesity. These results indicates that both genetic variants were potential as visceral obesity markers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Human beings are often driven to exhibit dietary preference according to their hedonic characteristics. Though previous studies proposed that the fat taste preference of an obese individual was associated with BMI, the perception of fat taste differs for every individual. The genetic variation among populations in taste receptor genes such as CD36 may be a contributing factor for this difference. Satiety peptides can also play a role in the regulation of fat taste perception. Generally, this hormone helps us to feel the sense of satiety. METHODS We have analysed the relationship among oro-gustatory perception of dietary lipids, salivary peptide-YY and genetic polymorphism in CD36. Oral fatty acid sensitivity analysis was performed by alternative forced choice method. Salivary peptide-YY concentration was analysed by ELISA and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in CD36 gene was determined by Real-Time PCR experiments. RESULTS We observed that the SNP at rs1761667 of CD36 and oral detection threshold for linoleic acid (LA) are associated with choice of food, lipid profiles, peptide-YY as well as adiposity parameters in obese population. Obese peoples had significantly low levels of peptide YY than people with BMI less than 25. These factors possibly play a role in preference for energy rich diets, development of obesity and associated complications. CONCLUSION This study provides a solid foundation for understanding the alterations in the dietary fat intake and levels of peptide-YY, which are associated with polymorphism in fat taste receptor. This is the first report that shows a significant relationship between the satiety hormone level, SNP in CD36 gene and oral fat detection threshold in human subjects.

Abstract
Obese subjects have shown a preference for dietary lipids. A recent collection of evidence has proposed that a variant in the CD36 gene plays a significant role in this pathway. We assessed the association between the orosensory detection of a long-chain fatty acid, i.e. oleic acid (OA), and genetic polymorphism of the lipid taste sensor CD36 in obese and normal-weight subjects. Adult participants were recruited in the fasting condition. They were invited to fat taste perception sessions, using emulsions containing OA and according to the three-alternative forced-choice (3-AFC) method. Genomic DNA was used to determine the polymorphism (SNP rs 1761667) of the CD36 gene. Obese (n 50; BMI 34⋅97 (sd 4⋅02) kg/m2) exhibited a significantly higher oral detection threshold for OA (3⋅056 (sd 3⋅53) mmol/l) than did the normal-weight (n 50; BMI 22⋅16 (sd 1⋅81) kg/m2) participants (1⋅20 (sd 3⋅23) mmol/l; P = 0⋅007). There was a positive correlation between OA detection thresholds and BMI in all subjects; evenly with body fat percentage (BF%). AA genotype was more frequent in the obese group than normal-weight group. OA detection thresholds were much higher for AA and AG genotypes in obese subjects compared with normal-weight participants. Higher oral detection thresholds for fatty acid taste are related to BMI, BF% and not always to CD36 genotype.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract resulting from interactions among various factors with diet being one of the most significant. IBD-related dietary behaviors are not clearly related to taste dysfunctions. We analyzed body mass index (BMI) and perception of six taste qualities and assessed effects of specific taste genes in IBD patients and healthy subjects (HC). BMI in IBD patients was higher than in HC subjects. Taste sensitivity to taste qualities was reduced in IBD patients, except for sour taste, which was higher than in HC subjects. Genetic variations were related to some taste responses in HC subjects, but not in IBD patients. Frequencies of genotype AA and allele A in CD36 polymorphism (rs1761667) were significantly higher in IBD patients than in HC subjects. The taste changes observed could be explained by the oral pathologies and microbiome variations known for IBD patients and can justify their typical dietary behaviors. The lack of genetic effects on taste in IBD patients indicates that IBD might compromise taste so severely that gene effects cannot be observed. However, the high frequency of the non-tasting form of CD36 substantiates the fact that IBD-associated fat taste impairment may represent a risk factor for IBD.

Abstract
Background CD36 is associated with regulation of lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis, and blood pressure. Moreover, its variation may be involved in the development of hypertension and/or coronary artery disease (CAD). The present study was conducted to investigate the possible association of CD36 rs1761667 (G > A) polymorphism with hypertension and/or CAD in the southeastern of Iran. Methods The present observational study was composed of 238 subjects who were admitted for coronary angiography, and divided into four groups: 1) hypertensive without CAD (H-Tens, n = 52); 2) hypertensive with CAD (CAD + H-Tens, n = 57); 3) CAD without hypertension (CAD, n = 65); and 4) non-hypertensive without CAD as the control group (Ctrl, n = 64). The CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism was genotyped with PCR-RFLP method. Association between CD36 rs1761667 genotypes and the risk of CAD and hypertension was assessed using multinomial regression by adjusting for age, sex, creatinine, fasting blood sugar (FBS), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Results In the present study, minor allele (A) frequency was 0.36. The genotype, but not allele frequency of the CD36 rs1761667 was significantly different between the four study groups (p = 0.003). Furthermore, using a recessive inheritance model CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism was significantly associated with an increased risk of CAD with hypertension (OR = 5.677; 95% CI = 1.053–30.601; p = 0.043). However, using the dominant model of CD36 rs1761667 had a protective effect on H-Tens and CAD patients. Conclusion The present findings revealed an association between CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism and susceptibility to hypertension and/or CAD in a southeastern Iranian population.

Abstract
Background: Diabetes is the seventh most common disease leading to death with a global estimate of 425 million diabetics, expected to be 629 million in 2045. The role of reactive metabolites and antioxidants, such as glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) provides an opportunity for identifying gene variants and risk genotypes. We hypothesised that certain antioxidant gene-gene interactions are linked with T2DM and can model disease risk prediction.Materials and methods: Genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in antioxidant genes for glutathione (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was performed in 558 T2DMs and 410 age and sex matched healthy controls by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), routine lab indices by standard techniques.Results: The null/null allele combination of GSTM1del and GSTT1del increased disease risk up to 1.7-fold. The combination of SNPs in GSTM1del, GSTT1del, GSTP1 + 313A/G and in CAT-21A/T, SOD2 + 47C/T, GPx1 + 599C/T increased the risk of diabetes 13.5 and 2.1-fold, respectively. Interaction of SNPs GSTM1del, GSTT1del, GSTP1 + 313A/G (105Ile/Val), CAT-21A/T, SOD2 + 47C/T, GPx1 + 599C/T were significantly linked with disease risk >5 × 103 fold.Conclusion: As the number of gene combinations increase, there is a rise in the odds ratio of disease risk, suggesting that gene-gene interaction plays an important role in T2DM susceptibility. Individuals who possess the GSTM1del, GSTT1del, GSTP1 105I/V(+313A/G), CAT-21A/T, SOD2 + 47C/T and GPx1 + 599C/T are at very high risk of developing T2DM.

Abstract
The perception of fat varies among individuals and has also been associated with CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism and genetic ability to perceive oral marker 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP). Nevertheless, data in the literature are controversial. We present direct measures for the activation of the peripheral taste system in response to oleic acid by electrophysiological recordings from the tongue of 35 volunteers classified for PROP taster status and genotyped for CD36. The waveform of biopotentials was analyzed and values of amplitude and rate of potential variation were measured. Oleic acid stimulations evoked positive monophasic potentials, which represent the summated voltage change consequent to the response of the stimulated taste cells. Bio-electrical measurements were fully consistent with the perceived intensity during stimulation, which was verbally reported by the volunteers. ANOVA revealed that the amplitude of signals was directly associated, mostly in the last part of the response, with the CD36 genotypes and PROP taster status (which was directly associated with the density of papillae). The rate of potential variation was associated only with CD36, primarily in the first part of the response. In conclusion, our results provide direct evidence of the relationship between fat perception and rs1761667 polymorphism of the CD36 gene and PROP phenotype.

Abstract
This research was aimed to explore correlation of gene polymorphisms of CD36 and ApoE with susceptibility of Alzheimer disease (AD).This study was a case-control study. Two hundred eleven AD hospitalized patients were selected as the AD group and 241 subjects were selected as the control group. PCR-RFLP was used to detect three loci (rs7755, rs3211956, and rs10499859) of CD36 gene and ApoE genotype. Chi-square test and univariate nonconditional logistic regression analysis were used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The haplotypes were constructed using SHEsis online software and the correlation between haplotypes and AD was analyzed. Meanwhile, differences of 3 alleles of ApoE and 6 genotypes (E2/E2, E2/E3, E2/E4, E3/E3, E3/E4, E4/E4) were compared between AD and control groups.The frequencies of rs7755 genotype (χ = 10.780, P = .005) and allele (χ = 10.549, P = .001) were statistically different between 2 groups. The genotype frequency of rs3211956 was statistically different between AD and control groups (χ = 10.119, P = .006). For the rs7755 locus, GG genotype (OR: 2.013, 95% CI: 1.098-3.699) was an independent risk factor for AD compared with AA genotype. In the dominant model, the risk to develop AD in AG/GG genotype was 1.686 times higher than AA genotype. For the rs3211956 locus, compared with TT genotype, GT genotype (OR: 0.536, 95% CI: 0.340-0.846) was a protective factor for AD after adjusting various physiological and biochemical factors. In the dominant model, the risk of GT/GG genotype to develop AD was reduced by 41.6%. For ApoE gene, the distribution differences of E2/E3 (χ = 9.216, P = .002), E3/E4 (χ = 7.728, P = .005), and E4/E4 had statistical significance between the 2 groups. The frequencies of allele E2 (χ = 9.359, P = .002) and E4 (χ = 13.995, P < .001) were statistically significant between AD and control groups.The rs7755 and rs3211956 loci polymorphisms of CD36 gene and genotype E2/E3, E3/E4, E4/E4 of ApoE gene, and E2 and E4 alleles were statistically related with AD.

Abstract
Oral sensitivity to fats varies in individuals influencing nutritional status and health. Variations in oleic acid perception are associated with CD36 and odorant binding protein (OBPIIa) polymorphisms, and 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) sensitivity, which is mediated by TAS2R38 receptor. L-Arginine (L-Arg) supplementation was shown to modify the perception of the five taste qualities. Here we analyzed the effect of three concentrations (5, 10, 15 mmol/L) of L-Arg on oral perception of oleic acid in forty-six subjects classified for PROP taster status and genotyped for TAS2R38, CD36 and OBPIIa polymorphisms. L-Arg supplementation was effective in increasing the perceived intensity of oleic acid in most subjects. The lowest concentration was the most effective, especially in PROP non-tasters or medium tasters, and in subjects with at least an allele A in CD36 and OBPIIa loci. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were exploited to characterize the chemical interaction between L-Arg and oleic acid, showing that a stable 1:1 oleate·ArgH+ adduct can be formed, stabilized by a pair of hydrogen bonds. Results indicate that L-Arg, acting as a ‘carrier’ of fatty acids in saliva, can selectively modify taste response, and suggest that it may to be used in personalized dietetic strategies to optimize eating behaviors and health.

Abstract
The multifunctional CD36 scavenger receptor facilitates fatty acid (FA) uptake and oxidation and it has been involved in the pathophysiology related to dysfunctional FA metabolism. The common variant in the CD36 gene, rs1761667 (A/G), whose allele A is characterized by a reduced protein expression, has been associated with taste sensitivity to and preference for fat. We therefore aimed at evaluating whether the CD36 polymorphism may influence fatty acid metabolism and endocannabinoid biosynthesis in normal weight (NW) and obese (OB) subjects. Red blood cell (RBC) fatty acid composition, and plasma endocannabinoid levels were determined. In NW subjects with AA genotype was found a marked reduction of RBC saturated fatty acids and palmitic/linoleic ratio (PA/LA), considered as de novo lipogenesis (DNL) biomarkers. Remarkably, to the reduction of DNL biomarkers corresponded an increase of omega-6 index, an indirect marker of the impact on fatty acid metabolism of dietary omega-6 fatty acids, endocannabinoid levels and a higher waist/hip ratio. The presence of the G allele was instead associated with increased endocannabinoid plasma levels and a trend for increased waist/hip ratio in obese subjects, even though exhibited decreased BMI with respect to those with AA genotype. These data indicate that the CD36 polymorphism, rs1761667, leads to a distinct metabolic pattern in NW and in OB subjects. Therefore, their determination may be crucial in developing personalized therapeutic strategies for ameliorating dyslipidemia and other metabolic disorders.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the association of the CD36 polymorphism (rs1761667) with dietary intake and liver fibrosis (LF) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients.
METHODS In this study, 73 patients with CHC were recruited. The CD36 genotype (G > A) was determined by a TaqMan real-time PCR system. Dietary assessment was carried out using a three-day food record to register the daily intake of macronutrients. Serum lipids and liver enzymes were measured by a dry chemistry assay. LF evaluated by transient elastography (Fibroscan®) and APRI score was classified as mild LF (F1-F2) and advanced LF (F3-F4).
RESULTS Overall, the CD36 genotypic frequencies were AA (30.1%), AG (54.8%), and GG (15.1%), whereas the allelic A and G frequencies were 57.5% and 42.5%, respectively. CHC patients who were carriers of the CD36 AA genotype had a higher intake of calories attributable to total fat and saturated fatty acids than those with the non-AA genotypes. Additionally, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) serum values were higher in AA genotype carriers compared to non-AA carriers (91.7 IU/L vs 69.8 IU/L, P = 0.02). Moreover, the AA genotype was associated with an increase of 30.23 IU/L of AST (β = 30.23, 95%CI: 9.0-51.46, P = 0.006). Likewise, the AA genotype was associated with advanced LF compared to the AG (OR = 3.60, 95%CI: 1.16-11.15, P = 0.02) or AG + GG genotypes (OR = 3.52, 95%CI: 1.18-10.45, P = 0.02).
CONCLUSION This study suggests that the CD36 (rs1761667) AA genotype is associated with higher fat intake and more instances of advanced LF in CHC patients.

Abstract
Growing number of evidences have suggested that oral fat sensing, mediated by a glycoprotein CD36 (cluster of differentiation 36), plays a significant role in the development of obesity. Indeed, a decreased expression of CD36 in some obese subjects is associated with high dietary fat intake. In the present study, we examined whether an increase in body mass index (BMI) is associated with altered oleic acid lingual detection thresholds and blood lipid profile in young Algerian teenagers (n = 165). The obese teenagers (n = 83; 14.01 ± 0.19 years; BMI z-score 2.67 ± 0.29) exhibited higher lingual detection threshold for oleic acid than lean participants (n = 82, 13.92 ± 0.23 years; BMI z-score 0.03 ± 0.0001). We also studied the association between rs1761667 polymorphism of CD36 gene and obesity. The AA and AG genotypes were more frequent in obese teenagers, whereas GG genotype was more common in lean participants. The A-allele frequency was higher in obese teenagers than that in lean children. We report that rs1761667 polymorphism of CD36 gene and oro-gustatory thresholds for fat might play a significant role in the development of obesity in young teenagers.

Abstract
Obesity and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis are increasing in westernized countries, regardless of their geographic location. In Latin America, most countries, including Mexico, have a heterogeneous admixture genome with Amerindian, European and African ancestries. However, certain high allelic frequencies of several nutrient-related polymorphisms may have been achieved by past gene-nutrient interactions. Such interactions may have promoted the positive selection of variants adapted to regional food sources. At present, the unbalanced diet composition of the Mexicans has led the country to a 70% prevalence rate of overweightness and obesity due to substantial changes in food habits, among other factors. International guidelines and intervention strategies may not be adequate for all populations worldwide because they do not consider disparities in genetic and environmental factors, and thus there is a need for differential prevention and management strategies. Here, we provide the rationale for an intervention strategy for the prevention and management of obesity-related diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis based on a regionalized genome-based diet. The components required to design such a diet should focus on the specific ancestry of each population around the world and the convenience of consuming traditional ethnic food.

Abstract
Orosensory perception of dietary fat varies in individuals, thus influencing nutritional status. Several studies associated fat detection and preference with CD36 or 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) sensitivity. Other studies have not confirmed the latter association. We analyzed the relationship between orosensory perception of oleic acid, two CD36 variants, and PROP tasting. Thresholds of oleic acid perception were assessed in 64 subjects using a modification of the three-alternative forced-choice procedure. Subjects were classified for PROP taster status and genotyped for TAS2R38 and CD36 (SNPs: rs1761667 and rs1527483). Subjects homozygous for GG of the rs1761667 polymorphism showed higher sensitivity to oleic acid than AA subjects. The capability to detect oleic acid was directly associated with TAS2R38 or PROP responsiveness. PROP non-tasters had a lower papilla density than tasters, and those with genotype GG of the rs1761667 polymorphism had lower oleic acid thresholds than PROP non-tasters with genotype AA. In conclusion, results showed a direct association between orosensory perception of oleic acid and PROP tasting or rs1761667 polymorphism of CD36, which play a significant role in PROP non-tasters, given their low number of taste papillae. Characterization of individual capability to detect fatty acids may have important nutritional implications by explaining variations in human fat preferences.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a noncommunicable disease affecting huge populations in India and abroad. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CD36, a macrophage scavenger receptor, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of T2DM and its complications. Eleven SNPs in the CD36 gene and their association with 100 each of control subjects and T2DM patients were investigated in the present study. The haplotype analysis of a few significant SNPs was carried out in individuals from families with diabetic history to evaluate its utility in disease prediction. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used for genotyping. Ten families with a family history of diabetes were identified and blood samples were collected from as many family members as possible. Genotyping of three SNPs, namely rs1761667 (G>A) in exon 1 A, rs3211938 (T>G) in exon 10, and rs3212018 (16 bp del) in exon 14, was performed in all samples. Our results suggested that individuals having a GATTC1 haplotype might be at risk of developing T2DM (p<0.001) and, therefore, might be susceptible to related complications. Moreover, the presence of A, G, and G alleles of SNPs rs1761667 (G>A), rs3211938 (T>G), and rs1984112 (T>G) tends to have increased BMI, respectively. Such studies may be helpful for disease prediction in individuals at risk of T2DM. The predictive potential of CD36 variants can be explored with more families in the study population to use this as a genetic marker.

Abstract
Associations between polymorphisms of the CD36 gene and susceptibility to coronary artery heart disease (CHD) are not clear. We assessed allele frequencies and genotype distributions of CD36 gene polymorphisms in 112 CHD patients and 129 control patients using semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Additionally, we detected CD36 mRNA expression by real-time quantitative PCR, and we quantified plasma levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). There were no significant differences between the two groups (P>0.05) in allele frequencies of rs1761667 or in genotype distribution and allele frequencies of rs3173798. The genotype distribution of rs1761667 significantly differed between CHD patients and controls (P=0.034), with a significantly higher frequency of the AG genotype in the CHD group compared to the control group (P=0.011). The plasma levels of ox-LDL in patients with the AG genotype were remarkably higher than those with the GG and AA genotypes (P=0.010). In a randomized sample taken from patients in the two groups, the CD36 mRNA expression of the CHD patients was higher than that of the controls. In CHD patients, the CD36 mRNA expression in AG genotype patients was remarkably higher than in those with an AA genotype (P=0.005). After adjusted logistic regression analysis, the AG genotype of rs1761667 was associated with an increased risk of CHD (OR=2.337, 95% CI=1.336-4.087, P=0.003). In conclusion, the rs1761667 polymorphism may be closely associated with developing CHD in the Chongqing Han population of China, and an AG genotype may be a genetic susceptibility factor for CHD.

Abstract
Background Dyslipidemia is a common metabolic disorder that may result from abnormalities in the synthesis, processing and catabolism of lipoprotein particles. Disorders of lipoprotein concentrations and elevated concentration of oxidized lipoproteins (oxLDL) are risk factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). CD36 plays an important role in lipid metabolism and polymorphisms in the CD36 gene are related to cardiovascular risk factors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether there is an association between genotypes and haplotypes of five polymorphisms in the CD36 gene with lipid levels in young normal-weight subjects. Methods A total of 232 unrelated subjects with normal-weight of 18 to 25 years old (157 women and 75 men) were randomly selected. The lipid profile and glucose levels were measured by enzymatic colorimetric assays. Genotyping of the polymorphisms -33137A/G (rs1984112), -31118G/A (rs1761667), -22674 T/C (rs2151916), 27645 Ins/Del (rs3840546) and 30294G/C (rs1049673) in the CD36 receptor gene was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism, linkage disequilibrium analysis among the five polymorphisms and an analysis of haplotype were estimated. Results HDL-C levels was lower in men than in women (P = 0.03). However, the median oxLDL levels in men was higher than in women (P = 0.05). There was no significant difference in the levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and glucose (P > 0.05). HDL-C levels were lower in the subjects with TC genotype of polymorphism -22674 T/C (P = 0.04), but the carriers of TT genotype had lower oxLDL levels (P = 0.01). LDL-C levels were higher in young carriers of CC genotype for 30294G/C polymorphism than non-carriers (P = 0.03). The subjects carrying the AATDC haplotype had 3.2 times presumably higher risk of LDL-C > 100 mg/dL than the carrying the AGTIG haplotype (P = 0.02), whereas the subjects carrying the AATIC haplotype had 2.0 times presumably higher risk of TC > 200 mg/dL than the carrying the AGTIC haplotype (P = 0.02). Conclusion The study provides evidence of a genetic association of CD36 haplotypes with the variability in LDL-C and TC levels in a sample of normal-weight subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a multifactorial disease resulting from ineffective use of insulin in the body. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes for scavenger receptors such as CD36 have been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases in diabetes. The present study evaluated the effect of genetic polymorphisms of the CD36 gene on the risk of developing T2DM. Four SNPs in the CD36 gene (-178A→C in the promoter region, rs1984112 [A→G in exon 1A], rs1527479 [T→C in intron IB], and rs3211938 [T→G in exon 10]) were screened in T2DM patients and healthy controls (n=100 each). MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysis of CD36 gene polymorphisms was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Statistical analysis was done by Fisher's exact test and χ² statistics using SPSS version 15.0 software (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL), whereas SHEsis software (available at http://analysis.bio-x.cn/myAnalysis.php ) was used for haplotype analysis. RESULTS There was genotypic association of rs3211938 (T→G) polymorphism with T2DM (P=0.046), whereas rs1984112 (A→G) and rs1527479 (T→C) SNPs showed no association. The minor alleles of SNPs ("G" of rs1984112, "C" of rs1527479, and "G" of rs3211938) showed significant association with clinical profiles in T2DM patients (P<0.05). Analysis also showed that the "GCG" haplotype had a significant association with T2DM (P=0.026; odds ratio=3.12; 95% confidence interval 1.089-8.939). Significant association of the CD36 gene was confirmed by linkage disequilibrium patterns. CONCLUSIONS The CD36 variants may help to determine the T2DM susceptibility in the North Indian population. However, genotyping of variants in more individuals and studies in other populations will be required to validate the results and ethnic variations.

Abstract
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) has been rising alarmingly worldwide, including in the United States, but knowledge on specific genetic determinants of MS is very limited. Therefore, we planned to identify the genetic determinants of MS as defined by National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP/ATPIII) criteria. We performed linkage screen for MS using data from 692 Mexican Americans, who participated in the San Antonio Family Diabetes/Gallbladder Study (SAFDGS). We found strong evidence for linkage of MS on chromosome 7q (LOD = 3.6, empirical P = 6.0 × 10(-5)), between markers D7S2212 and D7S821. In addition, six chromosomal regions exhibited potential evidence for linkage (LOD ≥1.2) with MS. Furthermore, we examined 29 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the fatty acid translocase (FAT or CD36, 18 SNPs) gene and guanine nucleotide binding protein, α transducing 3 (GNAT3, 11 SNPs) gene, located within the 1-LOD support interval region for their association with MS and its related traits. Several SNPs were associated with MS and its related traits. Remarkably, rs11760281 in GNAT3 and rs1194197 near CD36 exhibited the strongest associations with MS (P = 0.0003, relative risk (RR) = 1.6 and P = 0.004, RR = 1.7, respectively) and several other related traits. These two variants explained ~18% of the MS linkage evidence on chromosome 7q21, and together conferred approximately threefold increase in MS risk (RR = 2.7). In conclusion, our linkage and subsequent association studies implicate a region on chromosome 7q21 to influence MS in Mexican Americans.
