Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity: The Limits of Human Rights in Africa

The right to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) are integral to and manifest in LGBTIQ rights including homosexuality and same-sex marriage. International law promotes these rights and prohibits discrimination on these grounds. Many western countries endorse these rights and prohibitions in parliamentary legislation or judicial fiat. In comparison with all other jurisdictions worldwide, and within the African sub-region, only South Africa specifically prohibits unfair direct or indirect discrimination based on "sexual orientation" in its national constitution. This paper explores African approach to SOGI and LGBTIQ rights including homosexuality and same-sex marriage. It argues that despite the threat of homocapitalism, prevalent Afrocentrism and religions reject these form of "new rights" for being immoral, ungodly, unnatural and un-African, thereby underlining the limits of human rights in the sub-region.

Depression, Anxiety, and Stress among the Malay Muslim Transgender Women in Northern Malaysia: A Mixed-Methods Study

The study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of depression, anxiety, and stress among the Malay Muslim transgender women in the northwestern states of Peninsular Malaysia. This mixed-method, quantitative and qualitative, study was conducted in collaboration with a nongovernmental organization that works incognito to advocate and help transgender women. Participants were recruited using a snowball method. A self-administered questionnaire was used that included information related to the demographic background of participants, and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and Oslo-3 Social Support Scale. For the qualitative part of the study, 13 in-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide in the Malay language. The study showed the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress was 33.3% (n = 47), 48.2% (n = 68), and 26.2% (n = 37), respectively. Difficulty in finding employment was significantly associated with depression, anxiety, and stress, whereas a history of physical abuse was also significantly associated with anxiety, and being ostracized by friends was significantly associated with depression. During in-depth interviews, suicidal thoughts were mentioned by several respondents and many lamented poor support from family and cisgender friends, and they complained of societal pressure. In addition to being physically and verbally abused, some also complained about cyberbullying. There is an urgent need to identify those with mental distress among transgender women in Malaysia to enable early interventions. More research is needed to identify mental health issues among transgender women and highlight these issues to sensitize the general public to their problems.

Experiences of stigma, mental health, and coping strategies in Lebanon among Lebanese and displaced Syrian men who have sex with men: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND

In Lebanon, men who have sex with men (MSM) face high rates of stigma, discrimination, and violence. Minority stress, or the unique stressors related to anti-MSM stigma and discrimination, negatively impacts the mental health of MSM. These stressors are heightened for those with intersectional minority identities such as displaced Syrian MSM in Lebanon.

METHODS

In this qualitative study conducted in 2020-21, part of a larger study focused on the mental and sexual health risks among MSM, we collected qualitative data from Lebanese and displaced Syrian MSM living in Lebanon and analyzed reports of their experiences with stigma, mental health, and coping strategies. We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 12 displaced Syrian MSM and 13 Lebanese MSM.

RESULTS

Our findings highlight how MSM in Lebanon navigate stigma and the mental health risks that result. Common stressors among Lebanese and displaced Syrian MSM were related to finances, sexual orientation discrimination, and social isolation. Comparing the two groups, we found that stressors specific to displaced Syrian MSM were related to adverse childhood experiences, recent exposure to the Syrian war, displacement, and discrimination in Lebanon based on their intersectional identities as MSM and Syrians. For Lebanese participants, the most common stigma coping strategies were avoidance, drinking alcohol, using drugs, or having sex. As for displaced Syrian MSM, the most common stigma coping strategy was seeking the freely available mental health services offered to them through non-governmental organizations.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that increased targeted mental health and social support interventions, informed by the unique experiences of Lebanese and displaced Syrian MSM, are highly needed to improve the coping and mental health resources of all MSM in Lebanon.
