Abstract
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has instituted several successive programs to redevelop aging and distressed US public housing. The current program, the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, aims not only to redevelop housing but also to improve the health of public housing residents through a whole neighborhood transformation, at the cost of privatizing components of housing. In the present case study, we examine relationships and perceptions about public housing redevelopment and health among residents affected by the Sun Valley Choice Neighborhood Initiative in Denver, Colorado. We address how public housing residents experience redevelopment, with particular emphasis on the temporal, physical and embodied mental experience of "waiting" for housing in a community undergoing radical transformation. We understand and conceptualize waiting as the process that generates stressors, and embodiment as the process of internalizing stressors through the mechanism of weathering (Geronimus, 1992; Krieger, 2021). Through repeated interviews with 21 residents, we highlight several themes that tie together experiences of waiting for displacement as well as experiences of stress and uncertainty related to the bureaucracy of public housing redevelopment. We document how participants struggled with the emotional impact of imposed change, found waiting to be destabilizing for their mental health, and how they embodied experiences of displacement anxiety. These findings show how redevelopment projects impose a forced waiting on the state that extends precarity and further destabilizes the lives and mental health of public housing residents.

Abstract
Prison has been described as the ultimate form of time-punishment - a place where time is no longer a commodity for individuals to spend, but is ordered by a system which symbolises its power through the control of segments of people's lives. As such, a prison sentence epitomises the experience of waiting. Yet anticipating release is not the only form of waiting within carceral life; waiting for healthcare in its various forms also shapes people's temporal experience. Drawing on interviews with 21 people who have lived in prison, this article describes how experiences of waiting for healthcare are mediated by expectation or hope, perceptions of the relationship between behaviour and healthcare access, and the consequences of waiting for care. Constraints on the autonomy of people in prison mean that waiting for healthcare differs in important ways from waiting for healthcare in the community, and can be perceived as an additional form of punishment. The experience of waiting for prison healthcare can affect physical and psychological well-being, and can in itself be understood as a pain of imprisonment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patient-centredness of care during wait time before surgery can be improved. In this study we aimed to assess (1) patients' experiences with and preferences regarding wait time before surgery; (2) the impact of wait time on quality of life (QoL) and (3) which factors influence patients' wait time experience. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS We performed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods study among women with gynaecological cancer in two tertiary hospitals. We conducted semistructured interviews and identified aspects of QoL and factors that influenced wait time acceptability through thematic analysis. We developed a questionnaire from this thematic analysis which was completed by 97 women. Descriptive statistics and univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Average ideal wait time was 3.5 weeks (±1.7 weeks), minimum and maximum acceptable wait times were 2.2 and 5.6 weeks. Many patients scored above the threshold of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for anxiety (48%) or depression (34%), had sleeping problems (56%) or experienced pain (54%). A number of factors were more common in patients who indicated that their wait time had been too long: low education level (OR 7.4, 95% CI 0.5 to 5.0, p=0.007), time to surgery >4 weeks (OR 7.0, 95% CI 0.8 to 4.4, p=0.002) and experienced sleep disturbance (OR 3.27, 95% CI 0.0 to 3.1, p=0.05). If patients expectation of wait time was >4 weeks (OR 0.20, 95% CI -4.0 to -0.5 p=0008) or if patients experienced pain (OR 0.26, 95% CI -3.6 to -0.3, p=0.03), they less frequently indicated that wait time had been too long. CONCLUSION To improve patient-centredness of care, healthcare providers should aim to reduce wait time to 3-4 weeks and ensure that patients are well informed about the length of wait time and are aware of high levels of anxiety, depression and pain during this time. Future studies should evaluate what interventions can improve QoL during wait time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic pain is highly prevalent and a leading cause of disability. Long wait times for interprofessional care provide an opportunity to introduce web-based interventions that improve psychosocial function and patients' readiness and ability to manage their condition. Here we describe the process of partnering with people with lived experience (PWLE) to develop an online self-management program enhanced by motivational interviewing. We also report the multiphase usability testing of the program. METHODS PWLE were included in all aspects of this project from program inception to content creation, module development, usability testing, and knowledge dissemination. Phase 1 included the development of the interactive, web-based modules. This process involved weekly meetings and asynchronous content creation with a core team of interprofessional pain experts, researchers, and PWLE. Phase 2 included usability testing by our PWLE and clinical expert advisory. Phase 3 included survey-based usability testing with a sample of 10 PWLE. RESULTS We created a chronic pain & motivational empowerment program includes a series of eight interactive educational web-based modules. Topics included: setting expectations, chronic pain explained, biopsychosocial factors, empowered management, self-awareness & compassion & acceptance, values, goal setting, and communication. The program is accompanied by a reflection journal and can be enhanced by one-on-one coaching sessions using a motivational interviewing approach. Phase two usability testing resulted in numerous content changes and the addition of accessibility features. Phase 3 usability testing with PWLE found the program highly accessible and easy to use. CONCLUSIONS The engagement of our PWLE team member and advisors made the online program more relevant, sensitive and helpful to the needs of people with pain. PRACTICAL VALUE This PWLE-centric project sets the foundation for future work to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the program for supporting individuals with chronic pain self-manage.

Abstract
Objective Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease with treatment involving a multidisciplinary approach with pharmacological, physical therapies and surgery as options. Qualitative research can help us to understand the complexity of managing health conditions and this understanding plays a role in good clinical practice. We aimed to systematically search for, identify, and synthesise qualitative research exploring the experience of living with osteoarthritis, including decision making about joint replacement. Methods We comprehensively searched 4 bibliographic databases and used the methods of meta-ethnography to synthesise qualitative research findings. We screened 10 123 titles, 548 abstracts, and 139 full texts. We included findings from 118 reports (105 unique samples) of at least 2534 adults living with osteoarthritis around the world. Results We developed 7 themes: Becoming your own expert can be hard work; Living has become a careful balancing act; Medication is a double-edged sword; I have other things in my life to consider; You have to weigh up the odds of surgery; Surgery is the only effective option; and Surgery will give me a chance to live now. These findings have been drawn into a conceptual model reflecting a complex balancing act with tensions underpinning treatment decision making. Conclusions Osteoarthritis is framed as a world where patients become their own expert about their management and healthcare choices. Our conceptual model highlights key tensions underpinning treatment decision-making. These findings provide clinicians with insight of the complex nature of these decisions and how they can help patients through shared decision making.

Abstract
Background: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common disorder in women that includes complex interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors. Accessibility to interprofessional, biopsychosocial CPP care remains a challenge for many patients. There is a lack of knowledge regarding the experiences of women using health services for CPP care and the impact of waiting for interprofessional CPP care. This study explores the perceptions and experiences of Canadian women with CPP interacting with the health system while waiting for interprofessional CPP care. Methods: Our qualitative study included women with CPP waiting for interprofessional care in Ontario, Canada. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews which were transcribed verbatim and analyzed inductively using established methods for thematic analysis. Results: Ten women (median age of 38.5 years, age range 28–57) participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Three main themes were identified: (1) feeling adrift in the health system, (2) feeling “On hold,” uncertain, and in need of guidance, and (3) feeling reliant on a system that does not understand. Within these themes, women with CPP describe tangible strategies and recommendations for improving health system navigation and care. Conclusion: Our study highlights the need for improved access to interprofessional CPP programs, enhanced and targeted training for health professionals in CPP management, and better health system navigation support. Specific recommendations were provided from the perspectives of women with CPP and included providing information on what to expect and prepare for their appointment and engaging patients in education resources while they wait.

Abstract
Mangroves are complex and dynamic ecosystems that are highly dependent on diverse microbial activities. In this study, laboratory experiments and field studies for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) decay rates are carried out for the first time in the Xuan Thuy Mangrove Forest Reserve of Vietnam. Results show that there are significant differences in bacterial diversity in the water of mangrove areas that have been deforested compared to those which have been planted. The highest mean total coliform (TC) and Escherichia coli (EC) values were found in the natural mangroves (3,807±2,922 and 964±1133 CFU 100 ml-1, respectively). The results indicated that the source of contamination and seasonal changes affect the abundance of fecal bacteria. These results were exceeding by far the safety guidelines for individual, non-commercial water supplies in most of the samples. In the planted mangrove sampling sites, the highest mean Fecal streptococci (FS) values of 1,520±1,652 CFU 100 ml-1 were found. Microbial die-off rates were calculated over 5 days, and observed to be systematically higher for TC than for EC.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Osteoarthritis pain affects the lives of a large number of people around the world. Understanding other people's experience is integral to effective care and qualitative research can have an important part to pay in education and good clinical practice. We aimed to systematically search for, identify, and synthesise qualitative research exploring the experience of living with osteoarthritis in order to incorporate this knowledge into an educational resource. We comprehensively searched four bibliographic databases and used the methods of meta-ethnography to synthesise qualitative research findings. We screened 10123 titles, 548 abstracts and 139 full texts. We included findings from 118 reports (105 unique samples) of at least 2534 adults living with osteoarthritis around the world. We developed 7 themes from more than 600 findings: it is part of my life's tapestry; (yet) it is consuming me; it constrains my body and my occupations; I am becoming separated yet dependent; I accept, but I will not let it define me; (yet) this makes me feel less than the person I was. Our findings highlight the profound impact that osteoarthritis can have on people's lives and the struggle to hold onto a sense of self. They indicate that recognising these losses, and taking osteoarthritis seriously, is an integral part of effective healthcare. This finding may be transferable beyond this condition.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant delays to non-urgent elective surgery. Decision making regarding prioritisation for surgery is currently informed primarily by clinical urgency. The ways in which decision making should also consider potential social and economic harm arising from surgical delay are currently unclear. This scoping review aimed to identify evidence related to (i) the nature and prevalence of social and economic harm experienced by patients associated with delayed surgery, and (ii) any patient assessment tools that could measure the extent of, or predict, such social and economic harm. A rapid scoping review was undertaken following JBI methodological guidance. The following databases were searched in October 2020: AMED; BNI; CINAHL; EMBASE; EMCARE; HMIC; Medline; PsychINFO, Cochrane, and the JBI. A total of 21 publications were included. The findings were categorised into five themes: (i) employment, (ii) social function and leisure, (iii) finances, (iv) patients' experiences of waiting, and (v) assessment tools that could inform decision making. The findings suggest that, for some patients, waiting for surgery can include significant social, economic, and emotional hardship. Few validated assessment tools exist. There is an urgent need for more research on patients' experiences of surgical delay in order to inform a more holistic process of prioritising people on surgical waiting lists in the COVID-19 pandemic recovery stages.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As a tertiary center for complex orthopedic surgery, evaluating current practice is vital to enhance pathways of care. A vital element of this is to understand service users' perspectives and experiences, yet little research to date has explored experiences of waiting for surgery in this cohort. METHODS The aim of this mixed methods study was to understand patients' and families' experiences of waiting for hip revision surgery for joint infection and their perceptions of its impact on their quality of life. Data were collected via a survey and individual interviews with people who had experienced waiting for surgery between May 01, 2018 and April 30, 2019. Of the 54 participants invited to participate, 22 returned a questionnaire and five were interviewed. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively whilst qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. RESULTS Although 67 % of respondents reported being satisfied with their waiting time, all reported an increase in pain whilst waiting and 60 % stated that waiting had a significant effect on their lives and those of their friends/family (85 %). Most respondents reported high levels of satisfaction with the support (89 %) and information (83 %) provided by the clinical team. CONCLUSION Despite satisfaction with support and information being rated highly, waiting for surgery clearly has a great impact on patients and their families. A named clinician to monitor/oversee care whilst waiting and to act as contact to help them navigate services is recommended to support people during the waiting period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing care queues, reduced access to care and cancelled surgery are realities for some patients being treated with total hip or knee replacement surgery in Sweden. Most of the patients on the waiting lists have experienced pain and limited motion for a varying period of time, with a negative effect on their everyday lives. Overbooked surgical schedules are already contributing to the lengthy waiting times, but, with the addition of cancellations, longer waiting times will increase still further and may affect patients' well-being. METHODS In the present study, we aimed to illuminate the experience of having planned surgery cancelled, based on narratives from 10 participants. The interview transcriptions were analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach. RESULTS The comprehensive analyses revealed that the participants described the agony of being deselected and the additional impression of being excluded. Metaphors of being damaged and feeling physical pain were used and the interpretations referred to the cancellations as unpleasant. Additionally, the important relationship and the trust between the health workers and the patient were negatively affected by the cancellation. CONCLUSION After the cancellation, the participants expressed being vulnerable and from their perspective the cancelled surgery affected them deeply; in fact, much more than the healthcare workers appeared to understand. Therefore, information around the cancellation must be given respectfully and with dignity, in a dialogue between the patient and the healthcare workers. Taken together, to enable an opportunity to be involved in the continued care. The cancellations should be seen as an interruption, in which the patients' chance of living a pain-free, active life is postponed.

Abstract
METHODS This was a pre/post-observational study examining patients' emotions before and during elective knee or hip replacement surgery for osteoarthritis in seven European Union countries to identify factors related to better emotional status at discharge. INSTRUMENTS In addition to demographic data, information was collected on quality of life (EuroQoL five-dimension questionnaire), hospital expectations (Knowledge Expectations of Hospital Patients Scale), symptoms, and experienced emotions. ANALYSIS Total negative emotions scores at baseline and discharge were transformed into median values. Multivariate analysis identified the baseline factors related to better emotional status at discharge. RESULTS Patients (n = 1,590), mean age 66.7 years (SD = 10.6), had a significant reduction in the frequency of total negative emotions at discharge as compared with baseline. The multivariate model showed better health status (odds ratio [OR] = 1.012; p = .004), better emotional status at baseline (≥24 points), and shorter duration of hospital stay (OR = 0.960; p = .011) as independent factors associated with better emotional status at discharge (OR = 4.297; p = .001). CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing elective knee or hip replacement surgery for osteoarthritis improve their emotional status during hospitalization, with fewer negative emotions at discharge. Good emotional status, feeling of higher health status at baseline, and shorter hospitalization were independently associated with better emotional status at discharge.

Abstract
Structures of power and inequality shape day-to-day life for individuals who are poor, imposing waiting in multiple forms and for a variety of services, including for healthcare (Andaya, 2018a; Auyero, 2012; Strathmann and Hay, 2009). Constraints, such as the age requirements for Medicare, losing employer-provided health insurance, or the bureaucracy involved in filing for disability often require people to wait to follow recommendations for medical treatments. In 2016–2017, we conducted 52 narrative interviews in St. Louis, a city with significant racial and economic health inequities and without Medicaid expansion. We interviewed people with one or more chronic illnesses for which they were prescribed medication and who identified as having difficulties affording their prescriptions. Throughout the interviews, participants frequently recounted 1) experiences of waiting for care, along with other services, and 2) the range of strategies they utilized to manage the waiting. In this article, we develop the concept of active waiting to describe both the lived experiences of waiting for care and the responses that people devise to navigate, shorten, or otherwise endure waiting. Waiting is structured into healthcare and other social services at various scales in ways that reinforce feelings of marginalization, and also that require work on the part of those who wait. While much medical and public health research focuses on issues of diagnostic or treatment delay, we conclude that this conceptualization of active waiting provides a far more productive frame for accurately understanding the emotional and physical experiences of individuals who are disproportionately poor and made to wait for their care. Only with such understanding can we hope to build more just and compassionate social systems. Poor and chronically ill people wait to receive medical care and social services. People wait actively, making decisions to manage the repercussions of waiting. The idea of delaying care is inadequate to explain realities of illness and poverty. Waiting broadens and deepens structural vulnerability for marginalized people.

Abstract
Purpose: We aimed to gain deeper insight into how people struggling with obesity handle their life situation by addressing how well-being might unfold. For many people, obesity becomes a lifelong condition characterized by repeated weight fluctuations while their weight increases gradually. From an existential perspective, constantly waiting for weight loss can cause an experience of not reaching one's full potential. How people with obesity experience well-being, within their perceived limitations, is less reflected in previous research.Methods: We established a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with seven men and 14 women with obesity (body mass index 335 kg/m2) aged 18-59 years. The study had an exploratory design including a phenomenological-hermeneutic perspective, with a lifeworld approach.Results: Three themes describing aspects of well-being were developed: coming to terms with the body, restoring the broken relational balance and reorienting the pivot in life. The thematic findings were abstracted into a main theme: striving to make living bearable. The movement towards well-being can be seen as a struggle towards an experience of balance to make bearable living.Conclusions: We suggest that well-being as a dialectic between vulnerability and freedom might become a health-facilitating experience for people struggling with obesity.

Abstract
Objectives The present study investigates age differences in the types of decision support that total joint replacement (TJR) candidates desire and receive when making the decision to pursue surgery. We consider the social structural (relationship to the patient) and experiential factors (network members' experience with TJR) that influence individuals' support preferences and the interactions of these factors with age. We also examine whether a lack of support is linked with increased decisional conflict and reduced willingness to undergo surgery. Method A telephone survey was conducted with 100 individuals (aged 40+) who were contemplating knee or hip replacement. Results TJR candidates desired and received decision support from health care providers, family members, and individuals who had previously undergone TJR. They reported higher deficits in informational and emotional support than in instrumental support. Overall, a lack of instrumental support was associated with greater decisional conflict; a lack of instrumental support and a lack of informational support were associated with reduced willingness to undergo TJR. Discussion Our findings point to the importance of involving both formal and informal network members in TJR discussions, and the need for informational guidance and practical assistance to reduce decisional conflict and uncertainty among individuals considering TJR.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe quality of life (QoL) outcome measures that are reported in the literature in patients waiting for outpatient orthopaedic/musculoskeletal specialist care and how waiting impacts on QoL in these terms. METHODS A subset of studies reporting on QoL outcome measures were extracted from literature identified in a recent scoping search of Medline, Embase, Pubmed, NHS Economic Evaluation Database (Prospero registration CRD42016047332). The systematic scoping search examined impacts on patients waiting for orthopaedic specialist care. Two independent reviewers ranked study design using the National Health and Medical Research Council aetiology evidence hierarchy, and appraised study quality using Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tools. QoL measures were mapped against waiting period timepoints. RESULTS The scoping search yielded 142 articles, of which 18 reported on impact on QoL. These studies reported only on patients waiting for hip and/or knee replacement surgery. The most recent study reported on data collected in 2006/7. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index and the SF-36 were the most commonly reported QoL measures. QoL was measured at variable timepoints in the waiting period (from a few weeks to greater than 12 months). The impact of waiting on QoL was inconsistent. CONCLUSION The evidence base was over 10 years old, reported only on patients with hip and knee problems, and on limited QoL outcome measures, and with inconsistent findings. A better understanding of the impact on QoL for patients waiting for specialist care could be gained by using standard timepoints in the waiting period, patients with other orthopaedic conditions, comprehensive QoL measures, as well as expectations, choices and perspectives of patients waiting for specialist care.

Abstract
Background Waiting times for hospital appointments, treatment and/or surgery have become a major political and health service problem, leading to national maximum waiting times and policies to reduce waiting times. Quantitative studies have documented waiting times for various types of surgery and longer waiting times in public vs private hospitals. However, very little qualitative research has explored patient experiences of waiting, how this compares between public and private hospitals, and the implications for trust in hospitals and healthcare professionals. The aim of this paper is to provide a deep understanding of the impact of waiting times on patient trust in public and private hospitals. Methods A qualitative study in South Australia, including 36 in-depth interviews (18 from public and 18 from private hospitals). Data collection occurred in 2012–13, and data were analysed using pre-coding, followed by conceptual and theoretical categorisation. Results Participants differentiated between experiences of ‘waiting for’ (e.g. for specialist appointments and surgery) and ‘waiting in’ (e.g. in emergency departments and outpatient clinics) public and private hospitals. Whilst ‘waiting for’ public hospitals was longer than private hospitals, this was often justified and accepted by public patients (e.g. due to reduced government funding), therefore it did not lead to distrust of public hospitals. Private patients had shorter ‘waiting for’ hospital services, increasing their trust in private hospitals and distrust of public hospitals. Public patients also recounted many experiences of longer ‘waiting in’ public hospitals, leading to frustration and anxiety, although they rarely blamed or distrusted the doctors or nurses, instead blaming an underfunded system and over-worked staff. Doctors and nurses were seen to be doing their best, and therefore trustworthy. Conclusion Although public patients experienced longer ‘waiting for’ and ‘waiting in’ public hospitals, it did not lead to widespread distrust in public hospitals or healthcare professionals. Private patients recounted largely positive stories of reduced ‘waiting for’ and ‘waiting in’ private hospitals, and generally distrusted public hospitals. The continuing trust by public patients in the face of negative experiences may be understood as a form of exchange trust norm, in which institutional trust is based on base-level expectations of consistency and minimum standards of care and safety. The institutional trust by private patients may be understood as a form of communal trust norm, whereby trust is based on the additional and higher-level expectations of flexibility, reduced waiting and more time with healthcare professionals.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand experiences of wait time among patients awaiting scheduled orthopaedic or cardiac surgery. Using a qualitative approach, 32 patients completed two interviews each regarding their wait time experiences, including effects of waiting. Patient experiences of wait time varied regardless of actual wait time and included reports of restriction, uncertainty, resignation, coping and opportunity. Participants' waiting experiences indicate a complex relationship between greater symptom severity and less tolerance for wait time. We suggest healthcare resources focus on alleviating the deleterious effects of waiting for certain patients rather than reducing absolute wait times.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) often have to endure significant wait times for endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The pyschiatric impact of placement on a waitlist for ESS has not been explored. METHODS Questionnaires measuring CRS symptom severity and health-related anxiety and stress (SNOT-22, HADS, WPAI-GH) were sent to patients diagnosed with CRS and currently on a waitlist for ESS. Fifteen representative waitlisted patients participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews discussing their experience with their wait for ESS. A deductive thematic analysis was used to interpret the interview data using a quantitative driven mixed methods analysis. RESULTS Participants waiting for ESS reported worsening clinical symptomatology during their waiting period. Participants reported waitlist and CRS impact on both work and social aspects of their lives. The HADS scale showed no overall significant level of depression or anxiety in the HADS screening questionnaire. The qualitative data describe the effects of the symptom burden of CRS. CONCLUSIONS Patients waitlisted for ESS did not demonstrate any significant level of psychiatric distress, however variability exists. The qualitative arm of this study elucidates how patients cope with their wait.

Abstract
Research on patients' experiences of wait time for scheduled surgery has centered predominantly on the relative tolerability of perceived wait time and impacts on quality of life. We explored patients' experiences of time while waiting for three types of surgery with varied wait times--hip or knee replacement, shoulder surgery, and cardiac surgery. Thirty-two patients were recruited by their surgeons. We asked participants about their perceptions of time while waiting in two separate interviews. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), we discovered connections between participant suffering, meaningfulness of time, and agency over the waiting period and the lived duration of time experience. Our findings reveal that chronological duration is not necessarily the most relevant consideration in determining the quality of waiting experience. Those findings helped us create a conceptual framework for lived wait time. We suggest that clinicians and policy makers consider the complexity of wait time experience to enhance preoperative patient care.

Abstract
Interpretations of time underlie patients' experiences of illness and the way in which the National Health Service (NHS) is organised. In the NHS, achieving short waiting times for treatment is seen as important, and this is particularly evident in relation to chronic conditions where the time waiting in care from onset of symptoms to successful management can last months and years. One example of a chronic condition with high prevalence is osteoarthritis, estimated to affect 10% of people aged over 55 years in the UK. Osteoarthritis of the hip is particularly common, and treatments include exercise and medication. If these options do not provide enough relief from pain and functional difficulties, then joint replacement may be considered. With over 70,000 such operations conducted every year in England and Wales, processes relating to waiting times impact on many patients. This article explores how 24 patients with osteoarthritis experience time during the lead up to hip replacement surgery. We draw on data collected during longitudinal in-depth interviews with patients a median of 9.5 days before surgery and at two to four weeks post-operatively. Transcripts of audio-recorded interviews were imported into Atlas.ti® and inductive thematic analysis undertaken. Increasing pain and deterioration in function altered the experience of time during the journey towards hip replacement. Patients made essential changes to how they filled their days. They experienced lost and wasted time and faced disruption to the temporal order of their lives. A surgical date marked in the calendar became their focus. However, this date was not static, moving because of changing perceptions of duration and real-time alterations by the healthcare system. Findings highlight that patients' experience of time is complex and multi-dimensional and does not reflect the linear, monochronic conceptualisation of time embedded in the healthcare system. Waiting for hip replacement disrupts the temporal order of patients' lives. Patients' perceptions of time are multi-dimensional and complex. Experiences of time differ from health services' monochronic construction of time.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this literature review was to examine factors relating to the perioperative experience of older persons undergoing total hip and knee replacement surgery resulting from osteoarthritis. METHOD A literature search was undertaken using databases CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science to provide relevant research articles. Articles were included if they examined the factors relating to the HRQOL, QOL and perioperative experience of older persons undergoing joint replacement surgery resulting from osteoarthritis. The use of Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal checklist facilitated a systematic appraisal of studies with regard to the scientific rigor of the studies. RESULTS Twenty-two publications were categorized into one main theme: "factors relating to perioperative experience" subcategorized into eight subthemes: "waiting time", "pain and disability", "mental health", "race/ethnicity, age and gender", "body image", "coping and social support", "patient education" and "care continuity". CONCLUSION There is a need to conduct further research to examine the perioperative experience of older persons undergoing joint replacement surgery, in particular, the lived perioperative experience of a diverse race, ethnicity and culture in an Asian population. Implications for Rehabilitation Healthcare services should remain focused on reducing waiting time as prolonged waiting time for joint replacement surgery was detrimental to patients' HRQOL. Healthcare professionals need to identify strategies to improve the perioperative pain experience through patient education on pain management and positive social support to support the process of recovery. Patients' expectations of pain and their process of recovery were closely linked to patient education. One model of patient education that was seen to be successful and linked to good post-operative outcomes was care continuity model. Being actively involved in the care continuity results in better post-operative outcomes for the patient and their family.

Abstract
Hip or knee arthroplasty is proposed after osteoarthritis or an accident. It is decided after a long path of pain and decrease in the quality of life. This research explores the period of illness until surgery. Twenty-four semi-structured interviews were conducted one month before surgery and a thematic discourse analysis performed. The diversity and complexity of the patient experience, in a commonly performed surgical intervention underlines important topics, requiring attention in order to improve patient preparations and information prior to arthroplasty: information adapted to individual concerns, needs and representations. Psychological and physical acceptance is necessary for integration of the prosthesis.

Abstract
RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The admission to a hospital for elective surgery, like arthroplasty, can be planned ahead. The elective nature of arthroplasty and the increasing stimulus of the public to critically select a hospital raise the issue of how patients actually take such decisions. The aim of this paper is to describe the decision-making process of selecting a hospital as experienced by people who underwent elective joint arthroplasty and to understand what factors influenced the decision-making process. METHODS Qualitative descriptive study with 18 participants who had a hip or knee replacement within the last 5 years. Data were gathered from eight individual interviews and four focus group interviews and analysed by content analysis. RESULTS Three categories that influenced the selection of a hospital were revealed: information sources, criteria in decision making and decision-making styles within the GP- patient relationship. Various contextual aspects influenced the decision-making process. Most participants gave higher priority to the selection of a medical specialist than to the selection of a hospital. CONCLUSION Selecting a hospital for arthroplasty is extremely complex. The decision-making process is a highly individualized process because patients have to consider and assimilate a diversity of aspects, which are relevant to their specific situation. Our findings support the model of shared decision making, which indicates that general practitioners should be attuned to the distinct needs of each patient at various moments during the decision making, taking into account personal, medical and contextual factors.

Abstract
In this grounded theory study we explored the process of recovery following total hip replacement (THR) surgery from the perspective of the older adult. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 patients aged more than 65 years who had been discharged from hospital for a period of 4 to 6 months following THR surgery. Findings showed that three distinct but interrelated processes constitute the physical, psychological, and social recovery process: reclaiming physical ability, reestablishing roles and relationships, and refocusing self. Intervening conditions affecting the recovery process include comorbid conditions, the personal outlook of the patient, patients' relationships, and social support. The recovery process can lead to changes in personal and social functioning that patients might not anticipate. Awareness of potential changes will inform patient education and enable clinicians to develop strategies that facilitate THR patients' return to health.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the impact of waiting for elective surgery from the patient perspective, with a focus on maximum tolerance, quality of life, and the nature of the waiting experience. Searches were conducted using Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and HealthSTAR. Twenty-seven original research articles were identified which included each of these three themes. The current literature suggested that first, patients tend to state longer wait times as unacceptable when they experienced severe symptoms or functional impairment. Second, the relationship between length of wait and health-related quality of life depended on the nature and severity of proposed surgical intervention at the time of booking. Third, the waiting experience was consistently described as stressful and anxiety provoking. While many patients expressed anger and frustration at communication within the system, the experience of waiting was not uniformly negative. Some patients experienced waiting as an opportunity to live full lives despite pain and disability. The relatively unexamined relationship between waiting, illness and patient experience of time represents an area for future research.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to discover the structure of the lived experience of waiting and to generate new knowledge about health and quality of life. The participants in this study were 11 persons who were on a waiting list for a lung transplant. The Parse research method was used to answer the research question: What is the structure of the lived experience of waiting? The central finding of this study was: The lived experience of waiting is arduous constraint arising with anticipating the cherished in fortifying engagements. This finding illustrates waiting as an immensely difficult and agonizing experience of persistently expecting a prized opportunity, finding strength in being with other persons, and engaging in diverse activities. The findings are discussed in relation to nursing knowledge and as to how they inform future research and humanbecoming patient-centered nursing practices.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to learn how patients going through the diagnostic phase experienced and handled their situation. BACKGROUND Many studies report about the stressful diagnostic phase; however, none has presented a conceptual theory where the concepts are sufficiently related to each other. The Theory of Preparative Waiting has previously been published as a descriptive grounded theory and describes the experience of a group of gastroenterology patients going through the diagnostic phase. METHOD A classical grounded theory design was used, with data derived from 18 in-depth interviews with 15 patients in a gastroenterology ward at a Norwegian University Hospital. Interviews were conducted during 2002-2003. FINDINGS Participants' main concern was found to be how they could prepare themselves for the concluding interview and life after diagnosis. The theoretical code of 'balancing' had four patterns; controlling pain, rational awaiting, denial, and accepting. These patterns of 'balancing' guided how participants used the categories of 'Preparative Waiting Theory''seeking and giving information', 'interpreting clues', 'handling existential threats' and 'seeking respite'. Patterns were strategies, so one person could use more than one pattern. CONCLUSION The diagnostic phase was a difficult time for the participants and the 'Preparative Waiting Theory' can assist nurses in assessing how patients prepare themselves differently for getting a diagnosis. All patients would find it helpful to be followed up by a designated contact person at the ward; however, patients using mostly the patterns of controlling pain and denial would benefit most from such support.

Abstract
AIM This paper is a report of an analysis of the concept of waiting for health care from the client's perspective. BACKGROUND Waiting is commonplace in many areas of health care and has become a topical and politically important issue in the provision of healthcare services. Whilst managers and governments search for solutions to this problem, it is important that this aspect of clients' healthcare experience is examined to evaluate its impact and implications for nursing practice. METHODS The PubMed and CINAHL databases (dating from 1950 and 1982 to 2007 respectively) were searched using the keywords 'health care' and 'waiting'. The reference lists of papers identified were also checked and this revealed literature from a number of other disciplines related to the concept. RESULTS Waiting for health care is identified as an unspecified yet measurable period of time between identification of a healthcare problem and its diagnosis and treatment, when clients experience uncertainty and powerlessness whilst anticipating a disease outcome. The critical attributes of waiting for health care are: a period of measured time, subjective interpretation of the perceived significance of the measured time, feeling uncertain and powerless and anticipation of a response to the healthcare need. CONCLUSION Strategies that facilitate contact with clients through pre-assessment clinics and giving written information and a contact point may seem obvious but are currently overlooked in busy healthcare environments. This is an area where nurses can lead in the delivery of person-centred care and could potentially increase satisfaction with how waiting is managed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To obtain patients' perspectives on acceptable waiting times for hip or knee replacement surgery. METHODS A questionnaire with both open- and close-ended items was mailed to 432 consecutive patients who had hip or knee replacement surgery 3-12 months previously in Saskatchewan, Canada. A content analysis was used to analyse the text data from the open-ended questions. RESULTS The sample of 303 (response rate 70%) was 59% female with a mean age of 70 years (SD 11). The median waiting time from the decision date to surgery was 17 weeks. Individuals who rated their waiting time very acceptable (48%) had a median waiting time of 13 weeks compared with a median waiting time of 22 weeks for those who rated it unacceptable (23%). The two most common determinants of acceptability were patient expectations and pain and its impact on patient quality of life. The median maximum acceptable waiting time was 13 weeks and median ideal waiting time, 8.6 weeks. Seventy-nine per cent felt that those in greater need (higher severity) should go before them on the waiting list. Patient ratings of maximum acceptable waiting time were based on: pain and loss of mobility, time needed to prepare for surgery, and severity at the time of seeing the surgeon. In consideration of changing their surgeon to one with a shorter waiting list, 68% would not. CONCLUSIONS Patient views on waiting times are not only related to quality of life issues, but also to prior expectations and notions of fairness and priority. Understanding patient views on waiting for surgery has implications for better management of waiting times and experiences for joint replacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knee osteoarthritis is a highly prevalent condition that can result in disability and reduced quality of life. The evidence suggests that total knee replacement surgery (TKR) is an effective intervention for patients with severe knee problems, but there is also an unmet need for this treatment in the UK. To help understand the reason for this unmet need, the aim of this study was to explore the factors that influence the decision-making process of TKR surgery by synthesising the available evidence from qualitative research on this topic. METHODS A meta-synthesis was undertaken. This involved sevens steps: getting started, deciding what is relevant to the initial interest, reading the studies, determining how the studies are related, translating the studies into one another, synthesising translations, and finally, expressing the synthesis. Second-order and third-order interpretations regarding decision-making in TKR surgery were drawn from the literature. RESULTS Ten qualitative studies were found and are included in the synthesis. The evidence suggests that social and cultural categories of aging have shaped the expectation of knee osteoarthritis, and this in turn shapes patients' expectations of treatment options. The role of the health care professional was the strongest theme to emerge across all ten studies. Coping strategies and life context determine short and longer-term outcomes of TKR. CONCLUSION The decision-making process regarding TKR surgery is extremely complex, as patients have weigh up numerous considerations before they can make a decision about surgery. By synthesising ten qualitative studies, we have illuminated the importance of the health care professional during this process.
