Abstract
Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is pathological tissue hyperplasia between surgical wounds and nearby organs. Currently, traditional double-sided bioadhesives are limited in preventing PPA due to the indiscriminate adhesive properties and the poor interaction with wet tissues. Herein, we developed a Janus hydrogel, named PAA-Cos, by using the polycationic carbohydrate polymer of chitooligosaccharide (Cos) and the polyanionic polymer of polyacrylic acid (PAA). The adhesive layer of Janus hydrogels could adhere to wet tissue tightly due to surfaces composed of carboxyls, and the positively charged biomaterial (Cos) neutralized carboxyls on one side of PAA hydrogel to form Janus hydrogels. Moreover, PAA-Cos can further load with ligustrazine hydrochloride (Ligu), a pharmaceutical compound with anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects, finally obtaining PAA-Cos@Ligu. After the application of PAA-Cos@Ligu on the surgical trauma, the bottom surface can adhere to wet tissues robustly to restore the wound, while the top surface acts as a physical barrier with antiadhesive effects to avoid PPA. PAA-Cos@Ligu also exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by promoting M2 macrophage polarization, inhibiting the myofibroblast-like differentiation of peritoneal mesothelial cells, and blocking the TGF-β/Smad2/3 signaling pathway to hinder collagen deposition. Our findings suggest that PAA-Cos@Ligu has great potential as an anti-adhesion candidate with biocompatibility and ease of preparation.

Abstract
Postoperative adhesion (PA) is currently one of the most unpleasant complications following surgical procedures. Researchers have developed several new strategies to alleviate the formation of PA to a great extent, but so far, no single measure or treatment can meet the expectations and requirements of clinical patients needing complete PA prevention. Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for thousands of years based on its remarkable efficacy and indispensable advantages CM treatments are gradually being accepted by modern medicine. Therefore, this review summarizes the formating process of PA and the efficacy and action mechanism of CM treatments, including their pharmacological effects, therapeutic mechanisms and advantages in PA prevention. We aim to improve the understanding of clinicians and researchers on CM prevention in the development of PA and promote the in-depth development and industrialization process of related drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peritoneal adhesions (PA) are a common complication of abdominal operations. A growing body of evidence shows that inhibition of inflammation and fibrosis at sites of peritoneal damaging could prevent the development of intra-abdominal adhesions. METHODS A search of PubMed, Medline, CINAHL and Embase databases was performed using the keywords 'postsurgical adhesion', 'post-operative adhesion', 'peritoneal adhesion', 'surgery-induced adhesion' and 'abdominal adhesion'. Studies detailing the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents for peritoneal adhesion prevention were identified, and their bibliographies were thoroughly reviewed to identify further related articles. RESULTS Several signaling pathways, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, tissue plasminogen activator, and type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor, macrophages, fibroblasts, and mesothelial cells play a key part in the development of plasminogen activator. Several therapeutic approaches based on anti-PA drug barriers and traditional herbal medicines have been developed to prevent and treat adhesion formation. In recent years, the most promising method to prevent PA is treatment using biomaterial-based barriers. CONCLUSION In this review, we provide an overview of the pathophysiology of adhesion formation and various agents targeting different pathways, including chemical agents, herbal agents, physical barriers, and clinical trials concerning this matter.

Abstract
Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is a major clinical complication after open surgery or laparoscopic procedure. Ligustrazine is the active ingredient extracted from the natural herb Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, which has promising antiadhesion properties. This study is aimed at revealing the underlying mechanisms of ligustrazine in preventing PPA at molecular and cellular levels. Both rat primary peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) and human PMCs were used for analysis in vitro. Several molecular biological techniques were applied to uncover the potential mechanisms of ligustrazine in preventing PPA. And molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis assay were used to predict the binding sites of ligustrazine with PPARγ. The bioinformatics analysis was further applied to identify the key pathway in the pathogenesis of PPA. Besides, PPA rodent models were prepared and developed to evaluate the novel ligustrazine nanoparticles in vivo. Ligustrazine could significantly suppress hypoxia-induced PMC functions, such as restricting the production of profibrotic cytokines, inhibiting the expression of migration and adhesion-associated molecules, repressing the expression of cytoskeleton proteins, restricting hypoxia-induced PMCs to obtain myofibroblast-like phenotypes, and reversing ECM remodeling and EMT phenotype transitions by activating PPARγ. The antagonist GW9662 of PPARγ could restore the inhibitory effects of ligustrazine on hypoxia-induced PMC functions. The inhibitor KC7F2 of HIF-1α could repress hypoxia-induced PMC functions, and ligustrazine could downregulate the expression of HIF-1α, which could be reversed by GW9662. And the expression of HIF-1α inhibited by ligustrazine was dramatically reversed after transfection with si-SMRT. The results showed that the benefit of ligustrazine on PMC functions is contributed to the activation of PPARγ on the transrepression of HIF-1α in an SMRT-dependent manner. Molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis tests uncovered that ligustrazine bound directly to PPARγ, and Val 339/Ile 341 residue was critical for the binding of PPARγ to ligustrazine. Besides, we discovered a novel nanoparticle agent with sustained release behavior, drug delivery efficiency, and good tissue penetration in PPA rodent models. Our study unravels a novel mechanism of ligustrazine in preventing PPA. The findings indicated that ligustrazine is a potential strategy for PPA formation and ligustrazine nanoparticles are promising agents for preclinical application.

Abstract
Intraperitoneal adhesions complicate over half of abdominal-pelvic surgeries with immediate, short, and long-term sequelae of major healthcare concern. The pathogenesis of adhesion development is similar to the pathogenesis of wound healing in all tissues, which if unchecked result in production of fibrotic conditions. Given the similarities, we explore the published literature to highlight the similarities in the pathogenesis of intra-abdominal adhesion development (IPAD) and other fibrotic diseases such as keloids, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and pulmonary, intraperitoneal, and retroperitoneal fibrosis. Following a literature search using PubMed database for all relevant English language articles up to November 2020, we reviewed relevant articles addressing the genetic and epidemiological similarities and differences in the pathogenesis and pathobiology of fibrotic diseases. We found genetic and epidemiological similarities and differences between the pathobiology of postoperative IPAD and other diseases that involve altered fibroblast-derived cells. We also found several genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms that are up- or downregulated and whose products directly or indirectly increase the propensity for postoperative adhesion development and other fibrotic diseases. An understanding of the similarities in pathophysiology of adhesion development and other fibrotic diseases contributes to a greater understanding of IPAD and these disease processes. At a very fundamental level, blocking changes in the expression or function of genes necessary for the transformation of normal to altered fibroblasts may curtail adhesion formation and other fibrotic disease since this is a prerequisite for their development. Similarly, applying measures to induce apoptosis of altered fibroblast may do the same; however, apoptosis should be at a desired level to simultaneously ameliorate development of fibrotic diseases while allowing for normal healing. Scientists may use such information to develop pharmacologic interventions for those most at risk for developing these fibrotic conditions.

Abstract
Background Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is regarded as fibrous bands connecting both injured abdominal wall and organs or adjacent tissues. It is associated with T helper (Th)1 and Th2 differentiation. However, the critical role of the immunopathogenesis of adhesion formation was precisely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a new agent polylactic acid (PLA) nanoparticles loaded with ligustrazine, that is, ligustrazine nanoparticles (LN) on PPA and identify the potential mechanism. Methods Twenty-four Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into the sham, model, LN, and sodium hyaluronate (SH) groups. The structure of LN, including entrapment efficiency (EE) and loading capacity (LC), and in vitro drug release were calculated. Adhesions were scored and the Masson's trichrome staining was used to determine the collagen deposition. The expressions of TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB were measured by qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and western blot assay. Moreover, Th1-related cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-12), Th2-related cytokines (IL-4, IL-6) in the cecum tissue and serum were conducted by ELISA. Results LN had good EE, LC, and control-release delivery characters with fairly uniform diameter and spherical morphology. It could effectively prevent adhesion formation after surgery. Besides, it could reduce collagen fibers accumulation, downregulate the expression levels of TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB, and maintain Th1/Th2 balance. Conclusions Ligustrazine nanoparticles had effective effects on Th1/Th2 balance by regulating TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway in PPA rats. It may be served as a promising therapy on postoperative adhesion formation.

Is There a Genetic Predisposition to Postoperative Adhesion Development? Reprod Sci 2020; 28:2076-2086. Abstract
Adhesions are permanent fibrovascular bands between peritoneal surfaces, which develop following virtually all body cavity surgeries. The susceptibility to develop, and the severity, of adhesions following intra-abdominal surgery varies within and between individuals, suggesting that heritable factors influence adhesion development. In this manuscript, we discuss the pathophysiology of adhesion development from the perspective of genetic susceptibility. We restrict our discussion to genes and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are specifically involved in, or that cause modification of, the adhesion development process. We performed a literature search using the PubMed database for all relevant English language articles up to March 2020 (n = 186). We identified and carefully reviewed all relevant articles addressing genetic mutations or single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that impact the risk for adhesion development. We also reviewed references from these articles for additional information. We found several reported SNPs, genetic mutations, and upregulation of messenger RNAs that directly or indirectly increase the propensity for postoperative adhesion development, namely in genes for transforming growth factor beta, vascular endothelial growth factor, interferon-gamma, matrix metalloproteinase, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and the interleukins. An understanding of genetic variants could provide insight into the pathophysiology of adhesion development. The information presented in this review contributes to a greater understanding of adhesion development at the genetic level and may allow modification of these genetic risks, which may subsequently guide management in preventing and treating this challenging complication of abdominal surgery. In particular, the information could help identify patients at greater risk for adhesion development, which would make them candidates for anti-adhesion prophylaxis. Currently, agents to reduce postoperative adhesion development exist, and in the future, development of agents, which specifically target individual genetic profile, would be more specific in preventing intraperitoneal adhesion development.

Abstract
Peritoneal adhesions (PA) are a postoperative syndrome with high incidence rate, which can cause chronic abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, and female infertility. Previous studies have identified that PA are caused by a disordered feedback of blood coagulation, inflammation, and fibrinolysis. Monocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts, and mesothelial cells are involved in this process, and secreted signaling molecules, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), and type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), play a key role in PA development. There have been many attempts to prevent PA formation by anti-PA drugs, barriers, and other therapeutic methods, but their effectiveness has not been widely accepted. Treatment by biomaterial-based barriers is believed to be the most promising method to prevent PA formation in recent years. In this review, the pathogenesis, treatment approaches, and animal models of PA are summarized and discussed to understand the challenges faced in the biomaterial-based anti-PA treatments.

Abstract
Adhesion is a frequent complication after abdominal surgery. Although various methods have been applied to prevent and treat postoperative abdominal adhesion (PAA), few modern drugs designed for clinical applications have reached the expected preventive or therapeutic effect so far. There is an imperative to develop some new strategies for the treatment of PAA. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely practiced for thousands of years and played an indispensable role in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Modern medicine researchers have accepted the therapeutic effects of many active components derived from Chinese medicinal herbs. The review stresses the most commonly used TCM treatment, including Chinese medicinal herbals and monomers, TCM formulas, and acupuncture treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Aberrant transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) activation is detrimental to both nucleus pulposus (NP) cells and cartilage endplates (CEPs), which can lead to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Ligustrazine (LIG) reduces the expression of inflammatory factors and TGFβ1 in hypertrophic CEP to prevent IDD. In this study, we investigate the effects of LIG on NP cells and the TGFβ signaling. DESIGN LIG was injected to the lumbar spinal instability (LSI) mouse model. The effect of LIG was evaluated by intervertebral disc (IVD) score in the LSI mouse model. The expression of activated TGFβ was examined using immunostaining with pSmad2/3 antibody. The upright posture (UP) rat model was also treated and evaluated in the same manner to assess the effect of LIG. In ex vivo study, IVDs from four-week old mice were isolated and treated with 10-5, 10-6, and 10-7 M of LIG. We used western blot to detect activated TGFβ expression. TGFβ-treated human nucleus pulposus cells (HNPCs) were cotreated with optimized dose of LIG in vitro. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to determine pSmad2/3, connective tissue growth factor (CCN2), and aggrecan (ACAN) expression levels. RESULTS IVD score and the percentage of pSmad2/3+ NP cells were low in LIG-treated LSI mice in comparison with LSI mice, but close to the levels in the Sham group. Similarly, LIG reduced the overexpression of TGFβ1 in NP cells. The inhibitory effect of LIG was dose dependent. A dose of 10-5 M LIG not only strongly attenuated Smad2/3 phosphorylation in TGFβ-treated IVD ex vivo but also suppressed pSmad2/3, CCN2, and ACAN expression in TGFβ-treated NP cells in vitro. CONCLUSIONS LIG prevents IDD via suppression of TGFβ overactivation in NP cells.

Abstract
Background Postoperative abdominal adhesions formation is considered a significant clinical entity implicating the healing process following major pelvic and abdominal surgery, with serious clinical complications and need for substantial health care expenditures. However, setting a physical barrier between the damage site and the neighboring tissues is a convenient and highly valid way to minimize or prevent peritoneal adhesions. The present experimental study evaluated the preventive effect of ligustrazine nanoparticles nano spray (LNNS) on postoperative abdominal adhesion in rats and explored its mechanism. Methods Sixty male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, control group, sodium hyaluronate group and low, medium, and high dose LNNS groups. All groups were prepared with abdominal adhesion models except for the sham operation group. The models were made by opening the abdominal cavity to and filing the serosa in ileocecal junction. The abdominal cavity of rats in the sham operation group were only opened and sutured. The wound surface of rats in the sodium hyaluronate group, low, medium, and high dose LNNS groups were sprayed with sodium hyaluronate gel (0.5 mL/kg) and LNNS (2.5, 5, and 10 mL/kg). Rats in each group were sacrificed 7 days later. Degree of adhesion was evaluated by naked eyes and the pathological sections were scored afterwards. The collagen synthesis in adhesion tissues was detected by Masson's trichrome stain, and the activities of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in peritoneal fluid were detected with the method of chromogenic substrate. Levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in serum, and the protein levels of MCP-1 and MMP-9 in adhesion tissues were detected by ELISA and. immunohistochemistry respectively. RT-PCR and Western blot were utilized to identify the expression levels of Nrf2, heme-oxygenase-1, NQO1 mRNA and protein in adherent intestinal tissues. Results Compared with the control group, the incidence of postoperative abdominal adhesions decreased in the low, medium and high dose LNNS groups, while the expression of SOD in the peritoneal fluid significantly increased. The expression levels of ROS, MDA and NO were reduced remarkably (P<0.05), so were the expression levels of serum TNF-α and IL-1β (P<0.01) and the expression of MCP-1 protein in adhesion tissues. The MMP-9 protein expression, and Nrf2, heme-oxygenase-1, NQO1 mRNA and protein expressions increased. Conclusions LNNS with medium or high dose can significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative abdominal adhesions, the mechanism of which may be the activation of Nrf2/ARE pathway, resulting in the up-regulation of Nrf2, heme-oxygenase-1, NQO1 and mRNA expression, as well as the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in peripheral blood and the expression of MCP-1 protein in adhesion tissues. Meanwhile, the content of MMP-9 protein in adhesion tissues were raised, and oxidative stress and inflammatory response are released.

Abstract
Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (thiram) is a dithiocarbamate, which is extensively used in agriculture as pesticide and fungicide for treating grains intended for seed purposes and also for storing food grains. One of the most evident and detrimental effect produced by thiram is tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) in many avian species, by feeding diets containing thiram, a growth plate cartilage disease. TD is characterized by the lack of blood vessels and impaired vascular invasion of the hypertrophic chondrocyte resulting in the massive cell death. This study investigated the effects of ligustrazine on the treatment and control of thiram induced-TD. A total of 210 chicks were divided into three equal groups (n = 70): control group (received standard diet), TD group (feed on thiram containing diet from day 3-7), and ligustrazine group (feed on thiram containing diet from day 3-7 and after that ligustrazine @ 30 mg/kg from day 8 to day 18). During the experiment, the lameness, production parameters, tibia bone indicators, pathological index changes and integrin beta 3 (ITGB3) expressions were examined. The results reveal that ligustrazine plays an important role in improving angiogenesis and decreasing chondrocytes damage in TD chicks via a new molecule modulating ITGB3. So, the administration of ligustrazine can be an important way to cope with the losses and costs associated with TD in commercial poultry farming and animal welfare issue due to environmental contamination of thiram.

Abstract
Plants are known to possess plenty of pharmacological activities as a result of various phytoconstituents. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), one of the most widely used medicinal compound isolated from traditional Chinese herb, is usually employed for anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-lipid, anti-fibrosis, as well as activating blood, removing stasis, dilating small arteries, improving microcirculation and antagonizing calcium. In the present paper, the anti-adhesion effect of TMP were reviewed. TMP was found to play a multi-target and muti-link role in anti-adhesion by inhibiting hyperplasia of collagen and overexpression of adhesion-related factors and reducing the concentration of white blood cells and fibrin in plasma. Because previous studies mostly focused on in vitro experiments and animal experiments, there is an urgent need for clinical research with abundant indicators to further prove its anti-adhesion potency. Future basic research should concentrate on the development of TMP as a biological material.

Abstract
Background Existing data about the prognostic value of absolute count of blood cells in gastric cancer was limited. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the prognostic value of absolute count of white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and platelet in gastric cancer patients. Methods From September 2008 to March 2015, 3243 patients treated with radical gastrectomy were enrolled in the present study. Clinicopathological characteristics were recorded. The prognostic value of blood test in gastric cancer patients were analyzed. Results There were 2538 male and 705 female. The median age was 58 years (range 20–90). The median follow-up time was 24.9 months (range 1–75). The 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rate was 88.9%, 65.8% and 57.2%, respectively. The optimal cut off value was 6.19 × 109/L for WBC (P = 0.146), 4.19 × 109/L for neutrophil (P = 0.004), 1.72 × 109/L for lymphocyte (P = 0.000), 0.51 × 109/L for monocyte (P = 0.019) and 260.0 × 109/L for platelet (P = 0.002), respectively. Neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and platelet were risk factors for the prognosis of gastric cancer (all P < 0.05). However, only lymphocyte and monocyte were independent risk factors (both P < 0.05). Combination of lymphocyte and monocyte could increase the prognostic value for gastric cancer patients, especially in stage II/III gastric cancer patients. Conclusions High absolute count of neutrophil, monocyte and platelet, and low absolute count of lymphocyte were associated with poor prognosis of gastric cancer. However, only lymphocyte and monocyte count were independent prognostic predictors. Combination of lymphocyte and monocyte count could further increase the predictive value for gastric cancer.

Abstract
Background Intra-abdominal adhesion is one of the most common complications after abdominal surgery. The efficacy of current treatments for intra-abdominal adhesion is unsatisfactory. In this study, we investigated the effect of gallic acid on the prevention and treatment of intra-abdominal adhesions after abdominal surgery using an intra-abdominal adhesion rat model. Material/Methods The experimental rats were randomly divided into the sham operation group, the control group, the chitosan group, and 3 gallic acid groups of different concentrations. All rats except those in the sham operation group received cecal abrasion to induce adhesion. From the first postoperative day, the rats in the gallic acid groups were administered different concentrations of gallic acid in a 2-ml gavage daily. All rats were sacrificed on postoperative day 7, and the degree of intra-abdominal adhesion was evaluated by the naked eye. The amount of collagen deposited between the injured peritoneal tissues was assessed by Sirius red staining. Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) were measured by ELISA. Western blot was used to detect the level of NF-κB phosphorylation in the injured peritoneal or adhesion tissues of the rats. Results Compared with the control group, the scores of intra-abdominal adhesions in the rats treated with larger doses of gallic acid were significantly decreased, and the degree of inflammation and fibrosis was also significantly decreased. Gallic acid significantly reduced IL-6, TNF-α, and TGF-β1 serum levels. NF-κB phosphorylation in the higher gallic acid groups was significantly reduced. Conclusions Gallic acid inhibits the formation of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions in rats by inhibiting the inflammatory reaction and fibrogenesis. Gallic acid is a promising drug for preventing intra-abdominal adhesions.

Abstract
Tibial dyschodroplasia (TD) is a most common pathological condition in many avian species that is characterized by failure of growth plate (GP) modeling that leads to the persistence of avascular lesion in the GP. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is widely used to treat neurovascular disorders and pulmonary hypertension, but no report is available about promoting effect of TMP against TD. Therefore, a total of 210 broiler chicks were equally divided into three groups; Control, TD and TMP. During the experiment mortality rate, chicken performance indicators (daily weight, average daily feed intake, average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio), tibia bone indicators (weight, length, width of tibial and the size of GP) in addition to gene expression of HIF-1α and VEGF were examined. The results showed that TMP administration restore the GP width, increase growth performance, and mitigated the lameness in broiler chickens. The expression of HIF-1α and VEGF increased significantly in TD affected thiram induced chicks. Whereas, TMP treatment down-regulated HIF-1α and VEGF genes and proteins expressions. The present study demonstrates that the TMP plays an important role in angiogenesis during the impairment and recovery of GP in TD via regulation of the HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway in chickens.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this experimental study was to demonstrate the reduction of peritoneal adhesions formation in rats after intraperitoneal administration of rosuvastatin, due to its anti-inflammatory effect. Method Peritoneal adhesions were induced in 120 Wistar-Bratislava rats divided into 4 groups (n=30), using a parietal and visceral (cecal) abrasion model. Group I was designated as control group; in group II, a saline solution was administered intraperitoneally; in groups III and IV, a single dose of rosuvastatin solution, 10 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg respectively, was injected intraperitoneally. The serum values of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 (IL-1α) were determined on day 1 and day 7 postoperatively (ELISA). Macroscopic assessment of the peritoneal adhesions was conducted on day 14. Results Rosuvastatin therapy induced a significant decrease of tumor necrosis factor serum levels in groups III and IV, on day 1 and day 7 (p<0.01). Intraperitoneal administration of rosuvastatin correlated with a decrease of mean interleukin-1α levels on postoperative day 1 in groups III (p=0.0013) and IV (p=0.00011), but not on day 7, where the differences were no longer statistically significant (p=0.8) The reduction of postoperative peritoneal adhesions in the experimental rat model is supported by the anti-inflammatory effect of rosuvastatin, mediated mainly by the tumor necrosis factor. Conclusions Rosuvastatin prevents the formation of postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rats. This effect may be linked to the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines release in the early stages of adhesions formation. The present study suggests that rosuvastatin may be an efficient pharmacological agent in the prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesions development, and requires further studies as it has a promising application value.

Abstract
AIM Recently, several studies have reported that thrombocytosis may be associated with the poor prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Nevertheless, their conclusions were still controversial. Results & methodology: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science up to April 2016. A total of 30 studies including 9129 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Thrombocytosis had a close relationship with the poor overall survival of CRC compared with normal platelet counts, with the pooled hazard ratios being 1.89 (95% CI: 1.45-2.47; p < 0.00001) and 1.83 (95% CI: 1.33-2.53; p = 0.0002), with univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicated that thrombocytosis may be a cost-effective and noninvasive indicator for poor prognosis of patients with CRC, especially for overall survival.

Abstract
AIM This meta-analysis was designed to analyze and evaluate the prognostic role of preoperative or pretreatment platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHOD We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and WanFang Database up to April 2016. RESULTS A total of 16 studies (n = 5068 participants) were included for this meta-analysis. Elevated PLR has a close relationship with the poor overall survival of CRC, with the pooled hazard ratio being 1.88 (95% CI: 1.50, 2.36; p < 0.00001). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicated that pretreatment PLR may be a cost-effective and noninvasive serum biomarker for poor prognosis for patients with CRC.
