Adolescent bullying victimization and psychosomatic symptoms: Can relationship quality with fathers buffer this association?

Resilience and Strengths Among Minoritized Racial and Ethnic Groups of Children in the United States Exposed to Trauma, Violence, and Maltreatment: A Scoping Review

Children from minoritized racial and ethnic backgrounds are at a higher risk for exposure to trauma and violence because of longstanding structural inequities; yet, these children can experience resilience by drawing on assets and resources across multiple levels of the social and physical ecology. Guided by the Resilience Portfolio Model, this scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence from the quantitative and qualitative literature on strengths among minoritized racial and ethnic groups of children in the United States exposed to trauma, violence, and maltreatment. The review also explored similarities and differences in strengths across racial and ethnic groups. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed empirical articles published in the past decade (2013-2023), written in English, focused on U.S. children (ages 0-17 years) from minoritized racial and ethnic groups, and examined strengths and resilience in the context of trauma, violence, or maltreatment. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted using electronic databases. A total of 57 articles were included in the review. The review identified various regulatory, meaning-making, and interpersonal strengths, as well as combined strengths (i.e., a mixture of regulatory, meaning-making, or interpersonal strengths) among minoritized children. These findings illustrate the utility of the Resilience Portfolio Model in understanding both distinct and overlapping strengths across minoritized racial and ethnic groups. Our findings highlight the need for a more nuanced and expanded investigation of resilience, including the identification of culturally specific strengths, among minoritized racial and ethnic groups and subgroups of children.

Family affluence and bullying victimisation affect life satisfaction in large-bodied adolescents: Evidence from 37 high-income countries

BACKGROUND

Adolescents with large body sizes often experience bullying which likely affects their overall well-being. Yet, there is limited research on how bullying victimisation affects overall life satisfaction among this cohort of adolescents, and how family affluence moderates this relationship.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigates the moderation effects of family affluence in the association between bullying victimisation and life satisfaction among adolescents with large bodies.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

This research involved 16,240 adolescents with large bodies based on the World Health Organization's Body Mass Index Chart/Classification for ages 13 to 15 years from 37 high-income countries in Europe and North America.

DESIGN

The study used data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey, a cross-national study of adolescent health and well-being. Hypotheses were assessed through mixed effects binary logit models with random intercepts, accounting for data clustering and variations across regions.

RESULTS

After controlling for covariates, both cyberbullying (AOR = 1.72; 95 % CI = 1.48-2.00) and traditional bullying (AOR = 1.74, 95 % CI: 1.53-1.99) were significantly associated with lower life satisfaction compared with no bullying experience among participants. Family affluence partly moderated these associations, wherein the highest level of affluence reduced the effects of cyberbullying (AOR = 1.57, 95 % CI: 1.09-2.27) and traditional bullying (AOR = 1.41, 95 % CI: 1.02-1.96) on life satisfaction compared to lower levels.

CONCLUSION

Both traditional and cyberbullying significantly reduced life satisfaction among adolescents with large body sizes. However, higher family affluence moderates (reduces) these negative effects, suggesting a protective role of socioeconomic status. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to support bullied adolescents, particularly those with large bodies and from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Effect of Bullying Victimization on Adolescent Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Mediating Roles of Alexithymia and Self-Esteem

Background & Aim

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents is a serious public health issue influenced by the interaction of multiple factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the multiple mediating roles of alexithymia and self-esteem in the association between bullying victimization and NSSI in a sample of Chinese adolescents.

Methods

A survey of 1299 adolescents from two public middle schools in Henan Province, China, was undertaken. Data were collected using the Chinese version of the Delaware bullying victimization scale-student (DBVS-S), the Toronto Alexithymia-20 Scale (TAS-20-C), the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES), and the adolescent self-injury questionnaire. Besides, we performed a structural equation modeling (SEM) with latent variables using AMOS 26.0 to examine the relationship between variables and the mediating effects.

Results

The SEM analysis found that not only can bullying victimization directly impact NSSI, but that alexithymia and self-esteem have a chain mediating effect in the association between bullying victimization and NSSI. This mediating effect contributed 22.47% to the total effect.

Conclusion

These findings validate bullying victimization, alexithymia, and low self-esteem are important variables that affect NSSI among Chinese adolescents. Educators need to implement some prevention and intervention strategies to ameliorate the campus atmosphere and adolescents' mental health aimed at avoiding NSSI behavior in adolescence.

The Associations between Father Involvement and Father-Daughter Relationship Quality on Girls' Experience of Social Bullying Victimization

With much research into physical, cyber, and verbal bullying victimization, social bullying victimization is a type of victimization that can be hidden. Studies about Black father involvement have found involvement to be a buffer to adverse and risky behaviors of children, including different forms of victimization experienced by their daughters. This study examined one gap in the literature: the direct and potentially indirect associations between father involvement and father-child relationship quality on child reports of social bullying victimization among girls. The cross-sectional sample of 368 Black fathers and their daughters was sourced from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study. Data from wave 5 were selected for the child (age 9) and father because social bullying victimization was first measured at this time point. Logistic regression analysis findings showed father involvement was associated with lower social bullying victimization. In addition, talking and sharing ideas quite well rather than extremely well with their fathers was associated with higher odds of social bullying victimization. Father-daughter relationship quality did not mediate the father involvement and social bullying victimization relationship. Findings provide additional support to include fathers, particularly Black fathers, in intervention/prevention efforts and the importance of increasing awareness and benefits of father involvement in subtle forms of victimization such as social bullying victimization among Black families.

Parents' Self-reported Changes in Concern About Children's Bullying-Fall ConsumerStyles and Estilos Surveys, United States, 2020

Bullying is a type of youth violence and an adverse childhood experience that can result in trauma and have immediate and long-term consequences for all involved. It can happen at school or elsewhere - including online entertainment and social and learning environments. Some children are at increased risk for bullying victimization, such as those targeted because of their racial/ethnic background or cultural identity. This study assessed U.S. parents and caregivers' self-reported changes in concern about their children's involvement in bullying during Fall 2020 compared to the prior year, which was marked by extraordinary historical circumstances (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic, heightened awareness of racial inequities, schools transitioning to virtual learning). Secondary analyses of data from the 2020 Fall ConsumerStyles and Estilos online panel surveys - designed to be representative of U.S. adults overall and U.S. Hispanic adults, respectively - were conducted. Differences by children's type of school attendance (i.e., physically at school or not) and parents' sociodemographic characteristics were explored. While findings suggest that U.S. parents' concern for their children being bullied during Fall 2020 compared to the prior year did not change, significant differences were found by the children's type of school attendance and the parents' race/ethnicity - with increased concern among parents of children who physically attended school, non-Hispanic Black parents and Hispanic parents. Among parents who reported being less concerned during Fall 2020 about their children being bullied compared to the prior year, not being physically at school is noted as the main reason why. Parents who reported being more concerned frequently noted racism as the reason why. It is imperative to understand what parents think about bullying, to best inform efforts to support their key role in bullying prevention.
