Abstract
This research aimed to translate and assess the psychometric characteristics of the abbreviated Self-Reported Olfactory Functioning and Olfaction-Related Quality of Life (ASOF) among Iranian Farsi-speaking individuals. This tool development study, initiated after receiving authorization from the original questionnaire's corresponding author, involved the translation of the ASOF questionnaire using the forward-backward method, in line with the World Health Organization's standards. The research was conducted quantitatively, incorporating minor modifications in the Farsi version of the questionnaire items to ensure cultural relevance. The validity of the questionnaire, including face, content, and structural aspects, was evaluated. The internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha. Acceptable levels were observed in the item impact score, content validity index, and content validity ratio across all questionnaire items based on data from 30 healthy participants. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for self-reported olfactory function and olfactory quality of life assessment were 0.906 and 0.943, respectively, falling within a permissible range. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor structure of the ASOF questionnaire, as evidenced by standard factor loadings and goodness of fit indices, using a sample of 120 patients. The study concludes that the Farsi version of the ASOF questionnaire is a reliable and valid tool. It can effectively be used to assess a broad spectrum of olfactory disorders and olfaction-related quality of life in Farsi-speaking populations.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common symptom among people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) and contributes to environmental safety concerns, nutritional challenges, and an overall diminished quality of life. OD is perceived to progress along the lifespan in PwCF, often due to worsening sinonasal disease. Among children with cystic fibrosis (CwCF), OD is poorly characterized as limited resources and tolerance contribute to challenges in psychophysical olfactory evaluation among pediatric populations. The Children's Personal Significance of Olfaction (ChiPSO) questionnaire was recently proposed as a tool to assess olfaction and the importance of olfactory stimulation among children. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the utility of ChiPSO among a cohort of ethnically diverse CwCF. Methods: Individuals aged 7-17 with physician-diagnosed CF were asked to complete questionnaires, including ChiPSO and the brief questionnaire on olfactory dysfunction (bQOD-NS), prior to undergoing psychophysical olfactory evaluation with the U-Sniff Identification test. Potential associations between questionnaires and olfactory performance, pulmonary function, and demographic characteristics were evaluated using Pearson and Spearman correlations, independent-sample t-tests, Wilcoxon rank sum tests, and multiple linear regression. Results: U-Sniff Identification score positively correlated with the overall ChiPSO total score [r(13) = 0.640, p = 0.010] and its environmental subdomain score [r(13) = 0.774, p < 0.001], though not with the food subdomain [r(13) = 0.450, p = 0.093], the social subdomain [r(13) = 0.343, p = 0.2], or bQOD-NS score [r(11) = -0.125, p = 0.7]. Hispanic ethnicity is associated with ChiPSO (p = 0.041). Conclusions: In this preliminary study, olfactory importance increases with olfactory function among an ethnically diverse sample of CwCF, with a preferential influence of olfactory function on personal importance of environmental olfactory information. While these results should be interpreted with limitations imposed by the pilot nature of our sample size, our pilot data highlights associations with early adolescent development of importance of olfaction that can be disrupted in the setting of progressive disease among CwCF.

Abstract
Objective To assess the concordance of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated information with the 2022 International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Olfaction (ICAR-O). Methods Forty-two guidelines were extracted from the ICAR-O. Each guideline was converted into a question, which was presented to ChatGPT version 4.o and Google Gemini. Concordance was deemed an agreement between the AI response and the clinical recommendation. Credibility was granted if the AI platform provided a credible resource. Accuracy was graded on a Likert scale (0: entirely inaccurate information, 1: mix of accurate and inaccurate information, 2: entirely accurate information). Statistical analysis was performed. Results A total of 84 responses were generated. The mean accuracy of the ChatGPT and Gemini responses was 1.85 and 1.48 out of 2, respectively, indicating that the responses contained a mix of accurate and inaccurate information. ChatGPT responses were significantly more accurate than Gemini responses (p = 0.001). Of the ChatGPT responses, 78.57% (N = 33) were concordant with the ICAR-O guidelines and 100% (N = 42) cited a credible resource. Of the Gemini responses, 66.67% (N = 28) were concordant and 97.62% (N = 41) cited a credible resource. There were no significant differences in concordance (p = 0.22) or credibility (p = 0.31) between the AI platforms. Conclusion ChatGPT provided more accurate information than Gemini on olfaction. However, overall, both platforms did not consistently align with clinical guidelines. AI platforms require further evaluation before clinical implementation or use as educational adjuncts. Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this prospective case-controlled study, we aimed to examine changes in olfactory bulb (OB) morphology due to COVID-19 infection and to examine the effects of olfactory training (OT). METHODS This study included 29 patients with anosmia or hyposmia due to COVID-19 infection (Group 1), 24 normosmic patients after COVID-19 infection (Group 2), and 25 normosmic subjects without COVID-19 infection (Group 3). OB volumes, thickness, length, sulcus depth, and signal intensity were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Psychophysical tests (odor discrimination, thresholds, and odor identification) and a survey of olfactory symptoms were performed. After 12 weeks of OT, the MRI data and odor scores of Group 1 were compared with those of the other groups. RESULTS OB volumes were significantly smaller in Group 1 (54.01±2.92 mm3) compared with the other groups (group 2:56.7±3.2 mm3 and group 3:59.45±3.09 mm3). The OB thicknesses and lengths differed significantly between Group 1 and Groups 2 and 3. Group 1 had abnormalities in the OB signal intensity in the form of diffusely increased signal intensity compared with the others groups. Following OT, OB volume (right, p= 0.002; left, p=0.021) and Threshold Discrimination Identification score (p< 0.001) significantly increased in Group 1 patients. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that post-COVID olfactory loss is associated with smaller OB volumes and increased OB signal intensity. Additionally, this study provides evidence supporting the effectiveness of OT in improving olfactory function and OB volume in patients with long-lasting post-COVID-19 symptoms.

Abstract
ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the psychological distress associated with long-lasting COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction (OD).MethodsPatients with an OD lasting for more than 6 months were consecutively recruited from the Dour Medical Center (Belgium) from August 2023 to January 2024. The olfaction was investigated with the Olfactory Disorder Questionnaires (ODQ) and the threshold, identification, and discrimination (TDI) testing. General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were used to investigate the psychological distress of patients. The olfactory and psychological outcomes of patients were compared with a group of individuals without OD.ResultsA total of 220 patients and 102 asymptomatic individuals completed the evaluations. The mean duration of OD was 31.1 ± 25.1 months. The mean GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores were significantly higher in OD patients than in asymptomatic individuals (P < 0.008). The OD patient prevalence of mild-to-severe depression (51.2% vs. 44.1%) and mild-to-severe anxiety (39.5% vs. 32.4%) disorders was significantly higher than asymptomatic individuals. Severe anxiety was associated with the presence of anosmia. GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores were higher in females than in males. The severity of depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) was significantly associated with the severity of OD (ODQ) and nasal symptoms (SNOT-22).ConclusionThe presence of a long-lasting OD in patients consulting in otolaryngology is associated with psychological distress. While the causality relationship remains unclear, depression and anxiety symptoms must be investigated in this subgroup of patients with long COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is associated with a variety of neurologic deficits and impacts socialization decisions, mood, and overall quality of life. As a common symptom comprising the long COVID condition, persistent COVID-19-associated olfactory dysfunction (C19OD) may further impact the presentations of neuropsychiatric sequelae. Our study aims to characterize the longitudinal burden of depression, anxiety, and neuropsychiatric symptoms in a population with C19OD. METHODS Individuals with perceived C19OD completed a psychophysical screening evaluation of their sense of smell using the comprehensive Sniffin' Sticks olfactory assessment. Only those with validated psychophysical OD were included in this prospective longitudinal study for baseline and one-year follow-up. Participants also completed PHQ-9, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and neuropsychiatric symptom questionnaires at each time point. Anxiety, depression, and neuropsychiatric symptom prevalence was calculated and compared between time points with Pearson's chi-squared, Fisher's exact, and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. RESULTS Each neuropsychiatric symptom evaluated in this study was reported by 13-49% of longitudinal cohort participants at both baseline and follow-up, except for seizure (0% at baseline and follow-up) and word-finding difficulty (61-68% at baseline and follow-up). Word-finding and focus difficulties were the most commonly reported symptoms. In total, 41% of participants reported some level of depression at baseline and 38% of participants reported depression at one-year follow-up, while 29% and 27% of participants reported some level of anxiety at respective time points. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with C19OD are at risk for developing persistent neuropsychiatric conditions. These neurologic and psychiatric sequelae are persistent with repeated longitudinal assessment, even at nearly 2.5 years following initial COVID-19 diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although olfactory dysfunction is one of the most common presenting signs of COVID-19 infection, little is known about which populations are most susceptible. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk of COVID-19-induced chemosensory dysfunction in malnourished individuals. METHODS The N3C database was queried for adults having positive COVID-19 test result, diagnosis of chemosensory dysfunction within 2 weeks of positive test date, and overnutrition or undernutrition (i.e., deficiency or excess of micro- and macronutrients) related diagnoses prior to COVID-19 infection. Individuals previously diagnosed with chemosensory dysfunction were excluded. COVID-19-positive adults without olfactory dysfunction were similarly analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using odds ratio calculations (95% confidence interval [CI]). RESULTS Of 3,971,536 patients with COVID-19, 73,211 adults were identified with a diagnosis of undernutrition and 428,747 adults were identified with a diagnosis of overnutrition prior to infection. Of those with undernutrition, 264 (0.36%) individuals were identified with a diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction within 2 weeks of infection. Of those with overnutrition, 2851 (0.66%) individuals were identified with a diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction within 2 weeks of infection. The calculated odds ratio for undernutrition and olfactory dysfunction was 0.731 (p < 0.0001, 95% CI [0.0647, 0.0825]). The calculated odds ratio for overnutrition and olfactory dysfunction was 1.419 (p < 0.0001, 95% CI [1.3359, 1.5081]). CONCLUSION Overnutrition may increase the risk of COVID-19-related olfactory dysfunction, while undernutrition may slightly protect. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to highlight the feasibility of an olfactory training program entirely monitored through online media in COVID-19 patients. METHODS Classic olfactory training was performed with a sample with olfactory loss due COVID-19 (n = 11). Participants were engaged on a weekly video call in order to improve adherence and collect information regarding the number of correct answers and the individuals' perception of olfactory function. The olfactory status after training was compared to two groups, one composed of participants who contracted COVID-19 but did not report olfactory loss (n = 11) and a sample composed of healthy participants (n = 11). RESULTS The experimental group showed improvements throughout the training period (TDI score on week 0 was 20.3 (5.6) and 24.6 (4.3) for week 12, and on week 24 was 25.4 (6.2) (F = 5.115, df = 2, 20, p = 0.016), and post hoc tests showed that participants significantly improved their TDI score in W12 compared to W0 (SMD = 0.869, p = 0.041) and in W24 compared to W0 (SMD = 0.859, p = 0.041). The experimental group showed lower scores when compared with both groups, and the no OT COVID-19 group showed lower scores than the healthy control group, even though they did not report olfactory alterations. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that the strategies applied to improve adherence were successful since 100% of the sample completed the training adherence, offering a valuable framework for future olfactory training studies.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has led to various health challenges, including the disruption of people's sense of smell. Olfactory disorders have been reported as a lingering consequence of COVID-19, with diverse patterns of smell dysfunction experienced by patients. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the impact of persistent smell disorders on the quality of life of individuals who recovered from COVID-19 in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Taif, Saudi Arabia, between October 2023 and January 2024. The study included adults with a history of PCR-confirmed COVID-19 infection in Taif city. Data were collected using a validated online survey employing a convenience sampling technique. Statistical analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 (Released 2019; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), and chi-squared tests were used to assess the relationships. Results The study included 429 participants. A total of 52.7% of the respondents reported a loss of smell after recovering from COVID-19, and 14.9% reported a persistent loss of their sense of smell. The most common types of smell disorders experienced were hyposmia, anosmia, and parosmia. The study revealed emotional distress, changes in eating habits, and social impact among participants with smell disorders. Conclusion This study highlights the high prevalence of persistent smell disorders among individuals who recovered from COVID-19 in Taif, Saudi Arabia. The findings emphasize the complex nature of these disorders and their impact on patients' quality of life. This study contributes valuable information that can inform healthcare practices and support services for individuals experiencing post-COVID-19 smell disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Olfactory disorders in COVID-19 impact quality of life and may lead to psychological impairments. Prevalence ranges from 8 to 85%, persisting in about 30% of cases. This study aimed to evaluate the 6-month post-COVID-19 impact on quality of life, hedonic experiences, anxiety and depression due to olfactory disorders. Additionally, it sought to compare psychophysical tests and self-perceived olfactory evaluations. METHODS A prospective, longitudinal study was conducted over baseline (T0) and 6 months (T1) on individuals with persistent olfactory disorders post-COVID-19 for more than 6 weeks. Psychophysical tests employed the Sniffin' Sticks Test® (TDI score), and self-perceived olfactory evaluation used a Visual Analogue Scale. Quality of life was assessed with an Olfactive Disorder Questionnaire and the French version of the Quality of Life and Diet Questionnaire. Hedonic experiences were gauged using the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale, while anxiety and depression dimensions were measured by The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, The Post Traumatic Stress Checklist Scale, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Participants were classified into the "normosmic group" (NG) and the "olfactory disorders group" (ODG) at T0 and T1 based on the TDI score. RESULTS Were included 56 participants (58.93% women, 41.07% men) with a mean age of 39.04 years and a mean duration of post-COVID-19 olfactory disorders of 5.32 months. At T1, ODG had a significantly lower quality of life and hedonic experiences than NG. No significant differences in anxiety and depression dimensions were observed between groups. At T0, psychophysical tests and self-perceived olfactory evaluations were significantly correlated with quality of life and hedonic experiences in both groups. At T1, self-perceived olfactory evaluation in NG correlated significantly with quality of life, hedonic experiences, anxiety and depression dimensions, whereas ODG only correlated with hedonic experiences. CONCLUSION Individuals with persistent post-COVID-19 olfactory disorders after six months demonstrated compromised quality of life and hedonic experiences. Self-perceived olfactory evaluation played a more significant role in influencing quality of life and the dimension of anxiety and depression than the psychophysical presence of olfactory disorders. These findings emphasize the importance of considering patients' perceptions to comprehensively assess the impact of olfactory disorders on their well-being. Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the current study is to measure the prevalence and the potential role of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) score as a predictor of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in male experienced lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). METHODS A cross-sectional web-based Italian survey was administered via Google Forms between July 17 and October 31, 2022. The urinary functioning was measured through the IPSS questionnaire. Specifically, we considered symptoms occurring more than "about half the time" (score ≥ 3) as bothering symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression models (LRMs) adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), International Index of Erectile Function-5, IPSS, and hypertension were fitted to predict OSAS in the cohort of men responding to the survey and experiencing LUTS. RESULTS Overall, 58 (24.4%) patients had a confirmed diagnosis of OSAS. The overall median IPSS was 5 (inter quartile range [IQR]: 3-8), respectively. According to IPSS items, 24 (10%), 44 (18.4%), 12 (5%), 12 (5%), 12 (5%), 11 (4.6%), 63 (26.4%) patients exhibit incomplete bladder emptying, urinary frequency, intermittency, urgency, weak stream, straining, nocturia with a score ≥ 3, respectively. After multivariable LRMs predicting the developing OSAS, age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.09, p < 0.001), BMI (OR:1.12, p < 0.001) and IPSS total score (OR:1.08, p = 0.02) were independent predicting factors. CONCLUSION This analysis revealed that the IPSS total score, age, and BMI are independent predictors of OSAS in males. In this context, the use of IPSS in daily practice could be helpful in assessing the LUTS presence and in supporting physicians to identify a hidden sleep apnea condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine psychosocial differences between children with Long-COVID Syndrome (LCS) and two control groups (i.e., children who did not have COVID-19 and children who had previously had COVID-19 but did not develop LCS) from a bio-psycho-social and psychosomatic perspective. To classify children in these three groups, we examined the percentage of children meeting criteria for LCS, the type, frequency, perceived severity of symptoms, and their prevalence compared with children who never had SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS Data were collected from 198 Italian mothers of children aged 4 to 13 years using a cross-sectional web-based case-control survey. Of these, 105 were mothers of children who had contracted SARS-CoV-2 and 94 were mothers of children who had previously had COVID-19. Information was collected on the type and frequency of symptoms commonly referred to as "Long-COVID symptoms" and psychosocial dimensions (i.e., maternal and child health anxiety, COVID-19 anxiety, adjustment, and child deprivation). Descriptive analyses, chi-square tests, Student's T-Test, and analyses of variance were performed. RESULTS 29 children (15% of the total sample) developed LCS, mostly in the neurological/neuropsychiatric domain (59%), and of mild intensity. Regarding psychosocial and psychological dimensions, maternal health anxiety, child deprivation, and fear of SARS-CoV-2 infection differed between groups, with the first two dimensions higher in children with LCS than in controls and the latter lower in children with LCS than in controls. CONCLUSION This study sheds light on the need of integrating a psychosocial approach into the medical care of children with LCS and their caregivers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The loss of smell is a typical diagnostic symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This sensorial deprivation may be expressed as quantitative (anosmia or hyposmia) or qualitative (dysosmia) alterations as a consequence of anatomical disturbances of the nasal epithelium structure. The olfactory system sends direct neuronal connections to brain structures that are involved in emotional processing, including deep temporal nuclei. This anatomical and functional feature may be related to the occurrence of emotional disorders among COVID-19 patients. SUMMARY We identify a possible sequence of events, from typical olfactory dysfunction that is associated with COVID-19 and caused by olfactory epithelium damage to disturbances in the quality of life and emotional state of infected patients that is attributable to possible neuroinflammatory processes. Sensorial deprivation causes deleterious actions on mood, negatively affecting quality of life. Olfactory dysfunction that is associated with COVID-19 occurs concurrently with psychological distress, symptoms of anxiety, and depressive disorders and impinges on self-perceived quality of life. KEY MESSAGES Changes in mood are certainly associated with multiple factors, including the environment and isolation, but the observation that the virus may penetrate the central nervous system through the olfactory bulb and the connection between the olfactory system and prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices and the amygdala-hippocampus do not allow one to discard neural factors that are involved in the pathophysiology of emotional symptoms in post-COVID-19 patients. Behavioral symptoms of COVID-19 involve local olfactory actions and the participation of central neuronal systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) could negatively impair the patients' quality of life, increasing the sensitivity to psychological distress that results in mental health disorders. The relationships of both urinary and respiratory domains with psychological distress in obstructive sleep apnea patients is still underestimated. METHODS This study was a post hoc analysis of a web-based Italian survey, which included 1998 participants. Three hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses with psychological distress as dependent variable were performed on the study of 1988 participants enrolled in the final analysis. Cohen's f2 was used for the assessment of the effect size. RESULTS From the hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses, it emerged that the final statistical model (including sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, perceived urinary function, and excessive daytime sleepiness) for all dimensions accounted for 16.7% of the variance in psychological distress, with a medium effect size (f2 = 0.15). CONCLUSIONS People reported psychological distress was impaired by the presence of LUTS and EDS. Specifically, our study showed that higher levels of distress were scored especially in young women exhibiting urinary symptoms and with high values of daytime sleepiness.

Abstract
Background The current study aimed at assessing the levels of perinatal depression (i.e., both antenatal and postnatal) during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 outbreak in a group of Italian women, as well as to evaluate the role of loneliness, anxiety, and lack of maternal support in cumulatively predicting perinatal depression. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 Italian women recruited during a peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy (i.e., from September to December 2021) from a single prenatal clinic in Southern Italy. A non-parametric binomial test was conducted to assess whether the perinatal depression frequencies of the current sample differed from those found in a pre-Covid reference group. Additionally, hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses assessing whether loneliness, anxiety, and maternal support affected women's perinatal depression were also conducted. Results The general prevalence of perinatal depression was significantly higher in participants recruited during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-Covid reference group (29% vs. 9.2%). However, results showed that, contrary to postnatal depression (18.2% vs. 19.9%), only the prevalence of antenatal depression was significantly higher compared to the pre-Covid reference group (39.6% vs. 6.4%). Furthermore, loneliness and anxiety, but not maternal support, were associated with higher levels of PD. Limitations Limitations concerned the cross-sectional nature of the study and the relatively small sample size. Conclusions This study sheds light on the need to address perinatal mental health of women during major stressful events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
