Abstract
OBJECTIVE Describe how the Revised Hearing Handicap Inventory (RHHI) changes over time and determine associated factors. DESIGN Data were from a community-based cohort study. Linear regression models were used to estimate mean baseline and final RHHI scores and change (final minus baseline score). Logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with substantial RHHI change, defined as ±6 points. Factors included baseline age, sex, race, hearing aid use, and baseline pure-tone average (PTA; 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 kHz, worse ear). STUDY SAMPLE This study included 583 participants (mean age: 66.4 [SD 9.1] years; 59.9% female; 14.2% Minority race) with a mean follow-up time of 7.6 (SD 4.9) years. RESULTS Baseline and final RHHI scores were 7.9 and 9.2 points, corresponding to an average 1.3-point increase in hearing difficulty over time. Most participants (65.4%) did not show substantial RHHI change, whereas 21.4% and 13.2% experienced substantial increase and decrease, respectively. In separate multivariable models, PTA and hearing aid use were associated with substantial increase in hearing difficulty, and PTA was associated with substantial decrease. CONCLUSIONS The average RHHI change was relatively small. Hearing aid use and PTA were associated with RHHI change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to develop a machine learning-based classification model for cognitive impairment (CI) in elderly deaf patients and analyze the contributions of blood indices and hearing characteristics in identifying CI. METHODS Blood and audiometric data from 833 elderly deaf patients across three NHANES cycles were used to build a classification model with five algorithms: Logistic Regression, Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The optimal model was selected to rank feature importance. RESULTS The RF model, with an AUC of 0.834, performed best. Key predictors of CI included gender, systolic blood pressure, PTA+3kHz, neutrophil percentage, calcium, 6kHz hearing threshold, glycated hemoglobin, lymphocyte count,etc. CONCLUSION Hematological markers and hearing thresholds, especially the 3kHz threshold, are significant in identifying CI in ARHL, suggesting the need for further clinical exploration.

Abstract
This study aims to analyze the characteristics of EEG microstates across different cognitive frailty (CF) subtypes, providing insights for the prevention and early diagnosis of CF. This study included 60 eligible older adults. Their resting-state EEG microstates were analyzed using agglomerative adaptive hierarchical clustering. Microstate temporal parameters were extracted through global field power peak-based backfitting. Spearman's partial correlation analysis and linear mixed-effects models were employed to investigate the relationship between microstate temporal parameters and CF. Statistical differences were observed in transition probabilities (TPs) from microstate B to A between healthy controls (HCs) and reversible cognitive frailty (RCF) group (t = -2.076, P = 0.042). Potentially reversible cognitive frailty (PRCF) and RCF group also exhibited statistical differences in the TPs from microstate B to A (t = 3.122, P = 0.003). In the RCF group, the occurrence of microstates A and B differed significantly from microstate C (tAC = 3.455, PAC = 0.002; tBC = 3.108, PBC = 0.004). In the PRCF group, the occurrence of microstates A, B, and C differed significantly from microstate D (tAD = -3.688, PAD = 0.001; tBD = -3.334, PBD = 0.002; tCD = -4.188, PCD < 0.001). The neural networks and processing modes engaged by microstate D during executive memory tasks differ between RCF and PRCF. A decreased occurrence of microstate C and higher TPs of microstates A and B may serve as early warning signals for RCF. Conversely, an increased occurrence of microstate D and decreased TPs of microstates C and D indicate the onset of PRCF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss and identify associated risk factors in a Chinese population aged 45 years and older. STUDY DESIGN This study employed a cross-sectional research design. Data from the 4th wave survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) conducted in 2018 were utilized. Participants were assessed using self-reported questionnaires, and various demographic and comorbidity factors were analyzed to elucidate the risk factors associated with hearing loss. METHODS A total of 17,695 individuals from 10,257 households in 450 villages and urban settlements were included in the study. Hearing loss was assessed through self-reported questionnaires. Risk factors, including demographic characteristics and comorbidities, were analyzed to identify associations with hearing loss. RESULTS The study population had a hearing loss prevalence rate of 17.9% (n = 3,179). Regional variations were observed, with highest rates in Chongqing (28.67%), Yunnan (25.12%), and Qinghai (24.36%), and lowest rates in Zhejiang (17.71%), Tianjin (10.56%), and Shanghai (9.26%). Age ≥70 was associated with higher risk (OR = 3, p<0.05), while being female was associated with reduced risk (OR = 0.81, p<0.05). Higher education level showed lower risk (OR<1, p<0.05). Non-agricultural workers had lower risk (OR = 0.67, p<0.05). Fewer social activities were correlated with decreased risk (OR = 0.89, p = 0.024). Ethnic minorities had slightly higher risk (OR = 1.23, p<0.05). CONCLUSION This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and risk factors associated with hearing loss in the Chinese population aged 45 years and older. The findings emphasize the importance of early detection and intervention, particularly among older individuals and those residing in specific regions, for effective hearing loss management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the association between sensory impairment and the discordance between subjective/objective cognitive function among older adults and test the mediating effect of loneliness. METHODS We used data from four cohort studies conducted in 16 countries (N = 19,119). Sensory impairment and subjective cognitive impairment were self-reported. Objective cognitive impairment was measured in three dimensions. Generalized estimating equations were conducted to examine the association between sensory impairment and discordance in subjective/objective cognitive function. Cross-lagged panel model and a bootstrap method with 2,000 samples were employed to verify the mediating effect. RESULTS Sensory impairment was related to an increased risk of subjective cognitive impairment (OR = 4.70, 95 % CI 4.33-5.10), objective impairment (OR = 1.51, 95 %CI 1.31-1.74), as well as the discordance in subjective/objective cognitive function (OR = 1.35, 95 %CI 1.06-1.71 for older adults with normal subjective cognitive function). In contrast, sensory impairment was associated with a decreased risk of discordant subjective/objective cognitive function among those with subjective cognitive impairment (OR = 0.79, 95 %CI 0.66-0.94). Moreover, loneliness mediated the association between sensory impairment and subjective cognitive impairment (standardized indirect effect = 0.002, 95 %CI 0.001-0.004), objective cognitive impairment (standardized indirect effect = 0.005, 95 %CI 0.003-0.007) as well as the discordance in subjective/objective cognitive function (standardized indirect effect = 0.001, 95 %CI 0.001-0.003 for older adults with normal subjective cognitive function). CONCLUSIONS Significant association between sensory impairment and discordance in subjective/objective cognitive function and the mediating role of loneliness were revealed, varying by subjective cognitive function. Early screening on sensory impairment and targeted interventions on loneliness should be considered in future policies on cognitive impairment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subjective hearing and memory problems are detectable earlier than objective measures of sensory loss and cognitive decline, which are known to be related to an increased risk of dementia in later life. METHODS Using a population-representative cohort of 6006 individuals (aged 50-75) we examined whether participants who self-reported hearing and short-term memory issues showed greater rates of dementia within 17 years of follow-up. A sub-cohort was tested for audiometric threshold and cognition after 14 years. RESULTS Hearing and memory problems were associated with a greater risk of dementia (hazard ratios [HRs] = 1.42 [95% confidence interval: 1.11-1.81], 1.57 [1.30-1.90]), and poorer cognition 14 years later. The risk was greatest in those reporting both problems (HR = 1.99 [1.42-2.80]). At follow-up, the level of hearing loss was associated with lower cognitive scores. DISCUSSION Self-reports of hearing and short-term memory problems are associated with poorer cognitive performance and a greater risk of dementia. Subjective assessments may have predictive power over more than a decade. Highlights In a sample of older adults subjective hearing and memory problems were associated with dementia risk.Cross-sectionally, the audiometric screening threshold was associated with cognitive test scores.Subjective sensory and memory loss questions are easy to implement and show good predictive power.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of social isolation, loneliness, anxiety, depression, higher stress, and memory complaints interacting with personality traits as a function of hearing loss. Personality traits have previously been shown to correlate with anxiety and depression, as well as hearing loss, suggesting an effect of personality on the relationship between social emotional outcomes and hearing loss. A cross-sectional survey including validated screening measures was anonymously administered. Measures included personality (Big Five Index-2 Extra-Short Form), stress (Perceived Stress Scale), anxiety and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety), loneliness (Three-Item Loneliness Scale), social engagement (Lubben Social Network Scale-6), and self-perceived memory complaints (Subjective Cognitive Function). Eight hundred and ninety-one responses were obtained from adults between the ages of 18 and 90 years old (M = 50 years old). Hearing loss was positively correlated with subjective memory complaints only when not accounting for demographic variables, personality traits, psychosocial outcomes, and social emotional outcomes. There were additive effects of hearing loss and negative emotionality on increases in memory complaints in those who self-identified as maybe having hearing loss. Higher degrees of hearing loss also increased loneliness, with greater hearing loss negating the positive correlation between extraversion and social engagement. Overall, our results suggest that hearing loss significantly interacts with personality traits and other social emotional measures. Our results suggest that the impact of hearing loss on memory complaints, social isolation, and loneliness may differ across patients with hearing loss in comparison with those who think they maybe have hearing loss. Information from this study may provide insights for hearing healthcare and mental healthcare professionals to better serve persons with hearing loss who may require additional support or interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing loss is common in aging adults and is an important public health concern. Self-reported measures of hearing difficulty are often used in research and clinical practice, as they capture the functional impacts of hearing loss on individuals. However, little research has evaluated the prevalence or factors associated with self-reported hearing difficulty. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of self-reported hearing difficulty, measured by the Revised Hearing Handicap Inventory (RHHI), and associated factors. METHODS This study was conducted in a community-based cohort study based in Charleston, SC. We determined the prevalence of RHHI self-reported hearing difficulty (score ≥ 6 points) and evaluated associated factors with logistic regression models. Results are presented as odds ratios (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS There were 1558 participants included in this study (mean age 63.7 [SD 14.4], 56.9% female, 20.0% Minority race). The prevalence of RHHI self-reported hearing difficulty was 48.8%. In a multivariable model, older age (per + 1 year; OR 0.97 [95% CI 0.96, 0.98]), Minority (vs. White) race (OR 0.68 [95% CI 0.49, 0.94]), and speech-in-noise scores that are better than predicted (OR 0.99 [95% CI 0.98, 1.00]) were associated with lower odds of RHHI self-reported hearing difficulty. Furthermore, female (vs. male) sex (OR 1.39 [95% CI 1.03, 1.86]), higher PTA in the worse ear (per + 1 dB; OR 1.10 [95% CI 1.09, 1.12]), more comorbid conditions (vs. 0; 1 condition: OR 1.50 [95% CI 1.07, 2.11]; 2 conditions: OR 1.96 [95% CI 1.32, 2.93]; 3 + conditions: OR 3.00 [95% CI 1.60, 5.62]), noise exposure (OR 1.54 [95% CI 1.16, 2.03]), bothersome tinnitus (OR 2.16 [95% CI 1.59, 2.93]), and more depressive symptoms (OR 1.04 [95% CI 1.01, 1.07]) were associated with higher odds of RHHI self-reported hearing difficulty. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of RHHI self-reported hearing difficulty is high, and associated factors included demographics, audiometric hearing and other hearing-related factors, and physical and mental health. The RHHI likely captures functional impacts of hearing loss that are not captured by audiometry alone. Study findings can support the correct interpretation of the RHHI in research and clinical settings.

Abstract
Age-related cataract and hearing difficulties are major sensory disorders that often co-exist in the global-wide elderly and have a tangible influence on the quality of life. However, the epidemiologic association between cataract and hearing difficulties remains unexplored, while little is known about whether the two share their genetic etiology. We first investigated the clinical association between cataract and hearing difficulties using the UK Biobank covering 502,543 individuals. Both unmatched analysis (adjusted for confounders) and a matched analysis (one control matched for each patient with cataract according to confounding factors) were undertaken and confirmed that cataract was associated with hearing difficulties (OR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.98-2.27; OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.86-2.23, respectively). Furthermore, we explored and quantified the shared genetic architecture of these two complex sensory disorders at the common variant level using the bivariate causal mixture model (MiXeR) and conditional/conjunctional false discovery rate method based on the largest available genome-wide association studies of cataract (N = 585,243) and hearing difficulties (N = 323,978). Despite detecting only a negligible genetic correlation, we observe polygenic overlap between cataract and hearing difficulties and identify 6 shared loci with mixed directions of effects. Follow-up analysis of the shared loci implicates candidate genes QKI, STK17A, TYR, NSF, and TCF4 likely contribute to the pathophysiology of cataracts and hearing difficulties. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the presence of epidemiologic association between cataract and hearing difficulties and provides new insights into the shared genetic architecture of these two disorders at the common variant level.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to determine whether the concomitance of hearing impairment and isolation with lack of conversation, which is considered self-evident but has not been investigated extensively, is associated with the occurrence of dementia. METHODS A total of 2745 participants were divided into four groups according to the presence/absence of hearing impairment and isolation with lack of conversation. The association of dementia with hearing impairment and isolation with lack of conversation was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS The combined hearing impairment and isolation with lack of conversation (hazard ratio: 1.69, 95% confidence interval: 1.09-2.61) and non-hearing impairment and isolation with lack of conversation (hazard ratio: 1.60, 95% confidence: 1.07-2.39) were associated with the development of dementia. DISCUSSION These findings emphasize the importance of promoting high-quality social relationships throughout life by adopting preventive measures against isolation with lack of conversation from the early stage of awareness of hearing impairment. Highlights Dementia affects 12.9% of those with hearing impairment and isolation.Hearing impairment and isolation are associated with increased risk of dementia.Addressing these risk factors may help reduce the risk of developing dementia.Preventing isolation and promoting quality social relationships is important.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the associations of hearing loss, hippocampal volume, and motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) in older adults. Objective We aimed to investigate the associations of hearing loss with MCR and hippocampal volume; and the interaction of hearing loss with hippocampal volume on MCR. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study included 2,540 dementia-free participants (age≥60 years; 56.5% women) in the baseline examination of the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in rural China. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, clinical examination, and laboratory tests. Hearing function was assessed using pure tone audiometry test. In the subsample (n = 661), hippocampal volume was assessed on structural magnetic resonance images. Data were analyzed with logistic regression models. Results In the total sample, MCR was diagnosed in 246 persons (9.7%). High-frequency hearing loss was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of MCR and slow gait. In the subsample, the restricted cubic spline plots indicated an inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship between high-frequency hearing performance and hippocampal volume. Moreover, greater hippocampal volume was significantly associated with a deduced likelihood of MCR and subjective cognitive decline (SCD). In addition, there were statistical interactions of high-frequency hearing loss with hippocampal volume on MCR and slow gait (p for interaction < 0.05), such that the associations were statistically significant only among participants free of high-frequency hearing loss. Conclusions High-frequency hearing loss was associated with an increased likelihood of MCR in older adults. The hippocampus might play a part in the relationship of high-frequency hearing loss and MCR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing and vision impairments are risk factors for cognitive decline; less is known about dual sensory impairment. This study quantifies the association between dual sensory impairment and 8-year change in memory among older adults. METHODS Data (N = 5552) were from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Memory (immediate/delayed word recall, subjective memory) was measured annually (2011 to 2019). Hearing and vision impairments were measured by self-report. Association between dual sensory impairment and 8-year change in memory was assessed using multivariate linear mixed effect models and generalized logistic mixed models. RESULTS Rate of memory decline was most accelerated among participants with dual sensory impairment. For example, 8-year decline in delayed word recall was -1.03 (95% confidene interval: -1.29, -0.77) for dual sensory impairment versus -0.79 (-0.92, -0.67) for single and -0.56 (-0.63, -0.48) for no impairment. CONCLUSION Older adults with dual sensory impairment may be at particularly higher risk for cognitive decline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the aging of the population, frailty has attracted much attention, and the social dimension of frailty, namely social frailty, has also attracted attention. Studies have shown that social frailty can bring some adverse effects to the elderly, such as physical and cognitive function. AIMS To explore the risk of adverse health outcomes in older adults with social frailty compared with older adults with non-social frailty. METHODS Five databases were systematically searched from inception to February 28, 2023. Screening, data extraction and quality assessment were conducted independently by two researchers. The included studies were longitudinal studies of adverse outcomes in community-dwelling socially frail older adults, and the quality of each study was assessed using the Newcastle‒Ottawa Scale. RESULTS A total of 15 studies were included based on the inclusion criteria, of which 4 were subjected to meta-analysis. The mean age of the included population ranged from 66.3 to 86.5 years. According to existing research, social frailty was predictive of some adverse outcomes, such as incident disability, depressive symptoms, and reduced neuropsychological function. The meta-analysis showed that social frailty had a significant predictive effect on mortality among older adults [HR = 2.27, (95% CI = 1.03-5.00)]. CONCLUSION In community-dwelling older adults, social frailty was a predictor of mortality, incident disability, depressive symptoms and other adverse outcomes. Social frailty had a negative impact on older adults, so it was necessary to strengthen the screening of social frailty to reduce the incidence of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between sensory impairment including vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), dual impairment (DI) and the functional limitations of SCD (SCD-related FL) are still unclear in middle-aged and older people. METHODS 162,083 participants from BRFSS in 2019 to 2020 was used in this cross-sectional study. After adjusting the weights, multiple logistic regression was used to study the relationship between sensory impairment and SCD or SCD-related FL. In addition, we performed subgroup analysis on the basis of interaction between sensory impairment and covariates. RESULTS Participants who reported sensory impairment were more likely to report SCD or SCD-related FL compared to those without sensory impairment (p < 0.001). The association between dual impairment and SCD-related FL was the strongest, the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were [HI, 2.88 (2.41, 3.43); VI, 3.15(2.61, 3.81); DI, 6.78(5.43, 8.47)] respectively. In addition, subgroup analysis showed that men with sensory impairment were more likely to report SCD-related FL than women, the aORs and 95% CI were [HI, 3.15(2.48, 3.99) vs2.69(2.09, 3.46); VI,3.67(2.79, 4.83) vs. 2.86(2.22, 3.70); DI, 9.07(6.67, 12.35) vs. 5.03(3.72, 6.81)] respectively. The subject of married with dual impairment had a stronger association with SCD-related FL than unmarried subjects the aOR and 95% CI was [9.58(6.69, 13.71) vs. 5.33(4.14, 6.87)]. CONCLUSIONS Sensory impairment was strongly associated with SCD and SCD-related FL. Individuals with dual impairment had the greatest possibility to reported SCD-related FL, and the association was stronger for men or married subjects than other subjects.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to explore the association between hearing loss severity, hearing aid use, and subjective memory complaints in a large cross-sectional study in Norway. Methods Data were drawn from the fourth wave of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4 Hearing, 2017-2019). The hearing threshold was defined as the pure-tone average of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz in the better ear. The participants were divided into five groups: normal hearing or slight/mild/moderate/severe hearing loss. Subjective self-reported short-term and long-term memory complaints were measured by the nine-item Meta-Memory Questionnaire (MMQ). The sample included 20,092 individuals (11,675 women, mean age 58.3 years) who completed both hearing and MMQ tasks. A multivariate analysis of variance (adjusted for covariates of age, sex, education, and health cofounders) was used to evaluate the association between hearing status and hearing aid use (in the hearing-impaired groups) and long-term and short-term subjective memory complaints. Results A multivariate analysis of variance, followed by univariate ANOVA and pairwise comparisons, showed that hearing loss was associated only with more long-term subjective memory complaints and not with short-term subjective memory complaints. In the hearing-impaired groups, the univariate main effect of hearing aid use was only observed for subjective long-term memory complaints and not for subjective short-term memory complaints. Similarly, the univariate interaction of hearing aid use and hearing status was significant for subjective long-term memory complaints and not for subjective short-term memory complaints. Pairwise comparisons, however, revealed no significant differences between hearing loss groups with respect to subjective long-term complaints. Conclusion This cross-sectional study indicates an association between hearing loss and subjective long-term memory complaints but not with subjective short-term memory complaints. In addition, an interaction between hearing status and hearing aid use for subjective long-term memory complaints was observed in hearing-impaired groups, which calls for future research to examine the effects of hearing aid use on different memory systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking status may influence subjective cognitive decline (SCD); however, few studies have evaluated this association. OBJECTIVE To assess whether smoking status is associated with SCD among middle age and older adults, and to determine if this association is modified by sex at birth. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey to analyze the relationship between SCD and smoking status (current, recent former, and remote former). Eligible respondents included participants 45 years of age or older who responded to the SCD and tobacco questions of interest. Survey-weighted Poisson regression models were employed to estimate the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (cPR/aPR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the association between smoking status and SCD. A Wald test was computed to determine the significance of the interaction term between smoking status and sex (α= 0.05). RESULTS There were 136,018 eligible respondents, of which approximately 10% had SCD. There was a graded association between smoking and SCD, with the greatest prevalence of SCD among current smokers (aPR = 1.87; CI: 1.54, 2.28), followed by recent former smokers (aPR = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.02, 2.12), and remote former smokers (aPR = 1.11; 95% CI: 0.93, 1.33) each compared to never smokers. There was no evidence of effect modification by sex (p interaction = 0.73). CONCLUSION The consistency of smoking as a risk factor for objective and subjective cognitive decline supports the need for future studies to further the evidence on whether changes to smoking status impacts cognition in middle age.

Abstract
There is robust evidence that sex (biological) and gender (behavioral/social) differences influence hearing loss risk and outcomes. These differences are noted for animals and humans-in the occurrence of hearing loss, hearing loss progression, and response to interventions. Nevertheless, many studies have not reported or disaggregated data by sex or gender. This article describes the influence of sex-linked biology (specifically sex-linked hormones) and gender on hearing and hearing interventions, including the role of sex-linked biology and gender in modifying the association between risk factors and hearing loss, and the effects of hearing loss on quality of life and functioning. Most prevalence studies indicate that hearing loss begins earlier and is more common and severe among men than women. Intrinsic sex-linked biological differences in the auditory system may account, in part, for the predominance of hearing loss in males. Sex- and gender-related differences in the effects of noise exposure or cardiovascular disease on the auditory system may help explain some of these differences in the prevalence of hearing loss. Further still, differences in hearing aid use and uptake, and the effects of hearing loss on health may also vary by sex and gender. Recognizing that sex-linked biology and gender are key determinants of hearing health, the present review concludes by emphasizing the importance of a well-developed research platform that proactively measures and assesses sex- and gender-related differences in hearing, including in understudied populations. Such research focus is necessary to advance the field of hearing science and benefit all members of society.

Abstract
PURPOSE Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are associated with poor quality of life, important for clinical care planning and management, and may predict dementia diagnosis. Dual sensory impairment (DSI) is a risk factor for dementia, but whether DSI is associated with SCCs is unknown. We evaluated whether self-reported DSI is associated with SCCs. METHOD We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 9,899 community-dwelling respondents aged 60+ years without dementia or depression in the 2019 National Health Interview Survey. Participants self-reported difficulty remembering or concentrating, seeing even when wearing corrective lenses, and hearing even when using a hearing aid. We defined SCCs and sensory impairment for each mode as reporting at least some difficulty. We categorized sensory impairment into no sensory impairment, vision impairment only, hearing impairment only, and DSI. We then estimated weighted prevalence ratios (PRs) of SCCs by impairment category. RESULTS After weighting (9,899 participants representing a weighted n = 59,261,749), 12% of participants reported vision impairment only, 19% reported hearing impairment only, and 7% reported DSI. Relative to no impairment, after adjustment for potential confounders, vision impairment (PR = 2.07; 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.79, 2.39]), hearing impairment (PR = 2.26; 95% CI [2.00, 2.55]), and DSI (PR = 3.21; 95% CI [2.83, 3.63]) were associated with an increased prevalence of SCCs. CONCLUSIONS In this nationally representative survey of older Americans, DSI was associated with a threefold increased prevalence of SCCs. Although cross-sectional, these data underscore the importance of assessing multiple impairments as exposures when studying subjective cognition in older adults. Abstract
Introduction Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may be an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of SCD in Brazil and its association with dementia modifiable risk factors. Methods We used data of 8138 participants from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), a population-based study that included clinical and demographic variables of individuals across the country. We calculated the prevalence of SCD and its association with dementia modifiable risk factors. Results We found that the prevalence of SCD in Brazil was 29.21% (28.22%-30.21%), varying according to region, sex, and age. SCD was strongly associated with hearing loss, low education, psychological distress, Brown/Pardo and Black races. Discussion The prevalence of SCD in Brazil is higher than in high-income countries. Brown/Black races and dementia modifiable risk factors were associated with SCD. Public strategies that target SCD may help mitigate the incidence of dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the combined association of five healthy lifestyle behaviors with hearing loss (HL) in the UK Biobank cohort, established between 2006 and 2010 in the United Kingdom. METHODS This longitudinal analysis included 61,958 participants aged 40 to 70 years from April 2007 to December 2016. The healthy behaviors examined were: never smoking, high level of physical activity, high diet quality, moderate alcohol intake, and optimal sleep. Hearing loss was self-reported at baseline and in any physical exam during the follow-up. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 3.9±2.5 years, 3072 (5.0%) participants reported incident HL. After adjustment for potential confounders, including age, social factors, exposure to high-intensity noise, ototoxic medication, and comorbidity, the HRs of HL associated with having 1, 2, 3, and 4 to 5 vs 0 behaviors were: 0.85 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.96), 0.85 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.96), 0.82 (95% CI, 0.71 to 0.94), and 0.80 (95% CI, 0.67 to 0.97), respectively (P for trend, 0.02). We estimated that the population attributable risk percent for not adhering to any five low-risk lifestyle behaviors was 15.6%. CONCLUSION In this large study, an increasing number of healthy behaviors was associated with decreased risk of HL.

Abstract
The current study aimed to explore sex-influenced risk factors for cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. This cross-sectional study was a secondary analysis using a population-based design. We accessed and analyzed data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging survey of 2011. Participants were older adults aged ≥55 years living in non-indigenous townships. A total of 3,392 community-dwelling older adults were included. Results showed that the prevalence of cognitive impairment in females and males was 15.3% and 5.7%, respectively. Having a low educational level and being single (i.e., single, widowed, or divorced) were risk factors for cognitive impairment in both sexes. Males who had more than two chronic diseases had a higher risk of cognitive impairment. Self-reported hearing loss and depression increased risk of cognitive impairment in older females. Older age, lower educational level, and single marital status were associated with cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Abstract
In the last 5 years, there has been a surge in evidence that hearing loss (HL) may be a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction, including dementia. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of studies implicating vestibular loss in cognitive dysfunction. Due to the fact that vestibular disorders often present with HL and other auditory disorders such as tinnitus, it has been suggested that, in many cases, what appears to be vestibular-related cognitive dysfunction may be due to HL (e.g., Dobbels et al. Front Neurol 11:710, 2020). This review analyses the studies of vestibular-related cognitive dysfunction which have controlled HL. It is suggested that despite the fact that many studies in the area have not controlled HL, many other studies have (~ 19/44 studies or 43%). Therefore, although there is certainly a need for further studies controlling HL, there is evidence to suggest that vestibular loss is associated with cognitive dysfunction, especially related to spatial memory. This is consistent with the overwhelming evidence from animal studies that the vestibular system transmits specific types of information about self-motion to structures such as the hippocampus.

Abstract
Introduction: Despite growing recognition of hearing loss as a risk factor for late life cognitive disorders, sex and gender analysis of this association has been limited. Elucidating this is one means to advocate for holistic medicine by considering the psychosocial attributes of people. With a composite Gender Score (GS), we aimed to assess this among aging participants (50+) from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) cohort. Methods: The GS was derived from gender-related variables in HRS by factor analyses and logistic regression, ranging from 0 (toward masculinity) to 100 (toward femininity). GS tertiles were also used to indicate three gender types (GS tertile 1: lower GS indicates masculinity; GS tertile 2: middle GS indicates androgyny; GS tertile 3: higher GS indicates femininity). Univariate followed by multiple logistic regressions were used to estimate the Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of cognitive impairment (assessed by adapted Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status) from hearing acuity, as well as to explore the interactions of sex and gender with hearing acuity. The risk of cognitive impairment among hearing-impaired participants was assessed using multivariable models including sex and gender as exposure variables. Results: Five variables (taking risks, loneliness, housework, drinking, and depression) were retained to compute the GS for each participant. The distribution of GS between sexes partly overlapped. After adjusting for confounding factors, the OR for cognitive impairment associated with hearing impairment was significantly higher (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.15), and this association was not modified by female sex (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.46, 1.27), but by androgynous gender (OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.81). In the multivariable models for participants with hearing impairment, androgynous and feminine gender, as opposed to female sex, was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment (OR of GS tertile 2 = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.84; OR of GS tertile 3 = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.87; OR of female sex = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.57, 1.08). Conclusions: Hearing impairment was associated with cognitive impairment among older people, and this association may be attenuated by a more feminine GS.

Abstract
(1) Introduction: The validity of self-reported hearing disability measures has been assessed using their correlation with the pure-tone average (PTA) hearing loss for non-cognitively impaired adults. However, for people with cognitive impairment, factors in addition to the PTA can play a role in their self-reported difficulties. Patients with cognitive impairment may experience more hearing difficulties due to their brain processing sounds abnormally, irrespective of PTA. (2) Methods: Three groups of hearing aid users who had normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment and dementia were recruited. Self-reported hearing abilities were assessed with the modified Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability (mAIAD) and the speech, spatial and qualities of hearing scale (SSQ). (3) Results: The SSQ and mAIAD scores were highly correlated with each other for all three groups. However, a correlation with objective PTA was found in the normal cognition but not the cognitively impaired groups. Self-reported hearing scores were associated with cognitive scores for the dementia group (4) Discussion: In people with combined cognitive and hearing impairment, PTA alone may be a poor predictor of hearing abilities. Subjective hearing questionnaires together with hearing tests may provide a better understanding of their hearing difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dementia and cognitive impairment were significantly associated with hearing loss. The impact of hearing loss on dementia and cognitive impairment is understudied, particularly for different effect on cognitive impairment according to types of hearing loss. OBJECTIVE The present study was conducted to elucidate the association between clinically diagnosed dementia and hearing loss with consideration of the type of hearing loss among an elderly population, and to explore the effects of different types of hearing loss on preclinical cognitive impairment. METHODS Data (n = 59,675) from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening were used to calculate odds ratios (OR) for cognitive impairment according to type of hearing loss (conductive, sensorineural, mixed, and noise-induced hearing losses, and presbycusis). Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Korean Dementia Screening Questionnaire-Prescreening (KDSQ-P). RESULTS Cognitive impairment was significantly associated with conductive (OR: 1.45, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20-1.77), sensorineural (OR: 1.23, CI: 1.12-1.36), and noise-induced hearing loss (OR: 1.32, CI: 1.12-1.56), and presbycusis (OR: 1.53, CI: 1.25-1.87). Among participants scoring positive on the KDSQ-P (score≥4), the KDSQ-P score was significantly elevated in the mixed and noise-induced hearing loss groups. CONCLUSION This study revealed a significant correlation between different types of hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Noise-induced hearing loss is especially important because it occurs earlier than other types of hearing loss and has large effects on cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies demonstrated higher risk of hearing loss among cigarette smokers, but longitudinal data on whether the risk is influenced by smoking cessation are limited. We prospectively investigated relations between smoking, smoking cessation, and risk of self-reported moderate or worse hearing loss among 81,505 women in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2013). METHODS Information on smoking and hearing status was obtained from validated biennial questionnaires. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted relative risks (MVRR, 95% confidence interval). RESULTS During 1,533,214 person-years of follow-up, 2760 cases of hearing loss were reported. Smoking was associated with higher risk of hearing loss and the risk tended to be higher with greater number of pack-years smoked. Compared with never smokers, the MVRR (95% confidence interval) among past smokers with 20+ pack-years of smoking was 1.30 (1.09-1.55) and 1.21 (1.02-1.43) for current smokers. The magnitude of elevated risk diminished with greater time since smoking cessation. Compared with never smokers, the MVRR among smokers who quit <5 years prior was 1.43 (1.17-1.75); 5-9 years prior was 1.27 (1.03-1.56); 10-14 years prior was 1.17 (0.96-1.41); and plateaued thereafter. Additional adjustment for pack-years smoking attenuated the results. CONCLUSIONS The higher risk of hearing loss associated with smoking may diminish over time after quitting.
