Abstract
AIM To determine the prevalence of some retinal pathologies in people over 60y and their association with demographic and ocular factors. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tehran using multistage cluster sampling. After selecting subjects aged 60 and over, optometric, and ophthalmic examinations were done. For retinal examination, a 90 D lens was used and indirect ophthalmoscopy was performed after instilling tropicamide drops. Biometry was done using the IOL Master for all participants. RESULTS Of 3791 people that were invited through cluster sampling, 3310 participated in the study (response rate=82%). The prevalence of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) change, drusen, geographic atrophy (GA), hypertensive retinopathy (HTR), nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), choroidal neovascularization (CNV), central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), myopic retinopathy (MR), branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) was 27.42%, 11.08%, 4.52%, 3.03%, 4.05%, 0.54%, 0.82%, 0.39%, 0.20%, 0.49%, and 0.19%, respectively. After removing the effect of age, the odds of NPDR were 1.68 times higher in women compared to men (P=0.014). After removing the effect of sex, the odds of drusen, RPE change, GA, CNV, BRVO, and CRVO increased with age. CONCLUSION There is a higher prevalence of RPE change, drusen, GA, CNV and a lower prevalence of MR and CRAO in the elderly population of Tehran aged over 60y compared to global average values. Considering the correlation of most of the diseases with age and their effects on vision, attention should be paid to these diseases and the related screening programs to prevent vision impairment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the prevalence of loneliness and associated factors in young adults with vision impairment (VI), including quality of life (QoL) in India. METHODS Two hundred and three VI young adults (18-35 years) and 219 age-matched non-VI (controls) adults completed the loneliness scale, WHOQOL-BREF, Social Network Index (SNI) (network diversity, people in network size and number of embedded network subscales) and questions regarding sociodemographic characteristics and independent mobility. Rasch analysis was used to validate the questionnaires and interval-level scores were generated. Generalised linear models were used to estimate independent associations of sociodemographic factors, VI characteristics, social networks and QoL with loneliness. RESULTS The prevalence of moderate and severe loneliness in the VI group was 10% (95% CI: 6.5, 15.4) and 4.4% (95% CI: 2.0, 8.2), respectively, and higher than that of controls. The VI group had a worse loneliness score than controls (-1.66 ± 2.25 vs. -2.13 ± 1.85 logits; p = 0.03). Those with ≤12 years and >12 years of education had loneliness scores of -1.58 ± 2.45 and -1.82 ± 1.99 logits, respectively (p = 0.01). Compared with controls, the VI group reported fewer extended family members, neighbours and friends leading to significantly smaller networks and network diversity (all p < 0.001). Loneliness scores demonstrated a significant correlation with only two SNI subscales for both groups: people in network size (r = -0.28 for VI; r = -0.30 for non-VI; p < 0.001 for both) and number of embedded networks (r = -0.22 for VI; r = -0.21 for non-VI; p = 0.002 for both). Both education (β = 0.45; p = 0.04) and QoL (β = -0.27, p = 0.02) were predictors of loneliness. CONCLUSIONS Loneliness was commonly experienced by young VI adults and was higher among those with lower levels of education. Loneliness decreased with the presence of a larger number of people in network, suggesting that interventions to increase social activity and participation may be valuable in young VI adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We examined how the association between cognitive performance and cognitive health appraisal would be moderated by vision and/or hearing impairment. METHODS Data were collected from 315 older Korean-American residents in subsidized senior housing in Los Angeles (M age = 79.4 years). Linear regression models examined the direct and interactive effects of cognitive performance, vision impairment, and hearing impairment on cognitive health appraisal. RESULTS Negative appraisal of cognitive health was associated with lower cognitive performance and poorer ratings for vision and hearing. Moreover, we found a significant interaction between cognitive performance and hearing impairment (β = .13, p < .05), as well as a three-way interaction among cognitive performance, vision impairment, and hearing impairment (β = .12, p < .05). DISCUSSION The association between objective and subjective measures of cognition was weakened when hearing was impaired. Such a pattern was further evident when both vision and hearing were impaired.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive training is delivered visually and aurally. It is unknown whether self-reported sensory difficulty modifies the effects of cognitive training on cognition. METHODS Participants (N = 2788) in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly Study were randomized to training in memory, reasoning, speed of processing, or control. Differences in the 10-year effect of cognitive training on cognition by self-reported vision and hearing difficulty were assessed using linear mixed effect models. RESULTS Benefit (intervention vs. control) of reasoning training was smaller among participants with versus without vision difficulty (difficulty: -0.25, 95% confidence interval: [-0.88, 0.39], no difficulty: 0.58 [0.28, 0.89]). Benefit of memory training was greater for participants with versus without hearing difficulty (difficulty: 0.17 [-0.37, 0.72], no difficulty: -0.20 [-0.65, 0.24]). DISCUSSION Older adults with sensory loss have increased risk for cognitive decline; benefits of cognitive training may be greater for these individuals. Sensory loss should be considered in training design. Highlights Memory training was more beneficial for participants with hearing loss.Participants with vision difficulties did not benefit as much from reasoning training.Low accessibility in design and learned compensation strategies may contribute.Consideration of sensory impairment in study design is needed.Inclusion of older adults with sensory impairment in cognitive training is needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Semantic fluency is potentially a useful tool for vocabulary assessment in children with vision impairment because it contains no visual test stimuli. It is not known whether in the primary school years children with vision impairment perform more poorly on semantic fluency tasks compared to their sighted peers. METHOD We compared semantic fluency performance of two groups of 5- to 11-year-old British English speaking children-one group with vision impairment and one without. We also investigated within-group differences in performance, based on severity of vision impairment. We administered one category (animals) to children with vision impairment (n = 45) and sighted children (n = 30). Participants had one minute to respond. Responses were coded for accuracy, error type, clusters, and switches. RESULT Correct responses increased with age within each group. Groups did not differ significantly on any outcome measure. Severity of vision impairment did not impact task performance. CONCLUSION Results suggested that semantic fluency performance-at least for the category animals-is not different in children with vision impairment compared to sighted children. Findings also suggest that semantic fluency could be a suitable addition to the tools that speech-language pathologists use to assess language abilities in children with vision impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vision impairment (VI) is associated with falls in older adults. However, past studies have relied on geographically constrained samples with limited generalizability or self-reports of visual difficulty. To date, there have not been nationally representative studies on the association of objective measures of visual function and falls outcomes. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from Round 11 of National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a nationally representative panel study of age-eligible Medicare beneficiaries (N = 2951). We performed Poisson regression to calculate the prevalence and prevalence ratio (PR) of >1 fall in the past year, any fall in the past month, fear of falling (FoF), and activity limitation due to FoF as a function of distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity. Models were adjusted for demographic and health covariates and were weighted to make nationally representative parameter estimates. RESULTS The weighted proportion of participants with VI was 27.6% (95% CI, 25.4%-29.9%). Individuals with any VI had a higher prevalence of falls compared with those without VI (18.5% vs. 14.1%, PR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.02-1.53). Specifically, contrast sensitivity impairment was associated with a higher prevalence of recurrent falls (20.8% vs. 14.7%; PR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.01-1.67) and recent falls (17.1% vs. 9.9%; PR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.01-1.94). This relationship existed even independent of near and distance visual acuity. Distance and near visual acuity were not significantly associated with falls. Having any VI was also associated with a higher prevalence of FoF (38.4% vs. 30.5%, PR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.02-1.34). CONCLUSION The prevalence of falls is associated with poor contrast sensitivity but not with near or distance visual acuity. Findings suggest greater collaboration between geriatricians and eye care providers may be warranted to assess and address fall risk in older adults with VI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non-traumatic visual impairment is rare in the pediatric population, but early diagnosis and treatment of the cause is crucial to prevent long-term consequences affecting children's neurocognitive development. The authors aim to determine the most common causes of non-traumatic visual impairment in pediatric patients according to age groups by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Images of patients who underwent contrast-enhanced cranial and orbital MRI for new-onset visual impairment between June 2019 and June 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. MRI findings were categorized as tumors, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, demyelinating disorders, infections, isolated optic neuritis, and others. The patients were grouped according to age as preschoolers, schoolchildren, and adolescents. Demographic features of patients and MRI findings were collected and compared among age groups. RESULTS One hundred seventeen of the 238 patients had pathologic MRI findings. The most common pathologies were tumors (26.4%), idiopathic intracranial hypertension (24.7%), demyelinating disorders (18.8%), infections (11.1%), and isolated optic neuritis (7.6%). Tumors (69.2%) in preschool children, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (36.3%) in schoolchildren, and demyelinating disorders (32.7%) in adolescents were the most common cause of vision impairment by age group. CONCLUSION Children with acute vision impairment could have severe pathologies. Tumors in preschool children, idiopathic intracranial hypertension in schoolchildren, and demyelinating disorders in adolescents were the most common causes of new-onset vision impairment detected with MRI. Because of the difficulty of performing optimal ophthalmologic and neurologic examinations, especially in young children, cranial and orbital MRI should be considered to detect life-threatening pathologies.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Optometrists can play a key role in providing access to eye care in underserved populations by organising community-based eye health screenings that include optometric exams to detect vision impairment and uncorrected refractive error. BACKGROUND Community-based eye health screenings and optometric exams were conducted in the NYC-SIGHT Study. METHODS A sub-analysis of vision impairment and refractive error results within a 5-year prospective, cluster-randomised clinical trial. Eligible individuals (age ≥40 years) were recruited from 10 affordable housing developments in Upper Manhattan. Developments were randomised into usual care (received glasses prescription only) and intervention (free glasses) groups. Participants with 6/12 visual acuity or worse, intraocular pressure 23-29 mmHg, or an unreadable fundus image were scheduled with the study optometrist for refraction and a non-dilated exam. Visual improvement data were obtained by comparing the presenting acuity at screening compared to the best corrected acuity after refraction by the optometrist. Chi-square, two-sample t-tests, and a stepwise multivariate logistic regression model were used to determined factors associated with improvable visual impairment. RESULTS Seven hundred and eight participants completed screening, 308 received an optometric exam. Those with improvable vision impairment (n = 251), mean age: 69.8 years, 70.5% female, 53% African American, 39.8% Hispanic, >95% had health insurance. Refractive error diagnosed in 87.8% of the participants; lines of improvement: 2 lines (n = 59), 3 to 5 lines (n = 120), and ≥6 lines (n = 72). Stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that participants with visual acuity 6/12 or worse (odds ratio 16.041, 95% confidence interval 6.009 to 42.822, p = 0.000) or a normal fundus image (odds ratio 2.783, 95% confidence interval 1.001 to 7.740, p = 0.05) had significantly higher odds of improvable vision impairment. CONCLUSION This innovative, targeted community-based study included an optometrist who detected high rates of refractive error and improvable vision impairment in an underserved population living in New York City.

Abstract
PURPOSE Two training programmes about depression and anxiety in adults with vision impairment were developed to support eye care practitioners (ECPs) and low vision service (LVS) workers in identifying and discussing mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the training programmes' potential effectiveness and feasibility. METHODS The training programmes were offered to ECPs (n = 9) and LVS workers (n = 17). All participants completed surveys pre-, mid- and post-training, and at a 4 week follow-up about the training programmes' content, effectiveness, feasibility and implementation. The Kirkpatrick model was used as a theoretical framework; linear mixed models were used to determine the potential effectiveness, and outcomes were explored during three focus group meetings. RESULTS Expectations were met in the majority of the participants (84.6%). Post-training, both ECPs and LVS workers reported increased confidence (β = 3.67, confidence interval (CI): 0.53-6.80; β = 4.35, CI: 1.57 to 7.14, respectively) and less barriers (β = -3.67, CI: -6.45 to -0.89; β = -1.82, CI: -4.56 to 0.91). Mental health problems were more likely addressed in both the groups (ECP β = 2.22, CI: -0.17 to 4.62; LVS β = 4.18, CI: 2.67 to 5.68), but these effects did not last in ECPs (β = -3.22, CI: -7.37 to 0.92). Variations of these learning effects between individual participants were found within both the groups, and LVS workers indicated a need to focus on their own profession. Participants provided information on how to improve the training programmes' feasibility, effectiveness and implementation. CONCLUSION The training programmes seemed feasible and potentially effective. Transfer of the lessons learned into daily practice could be enhanced by, for example, specifying the training programmes for healthcare providers with the same profession, introducing microlearning and incorporating mental health management into organisation policies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The World Report on Vision highlights that health information systems (HIS) should collect information on the determinants of eye conditions and vision impairment (VI) as a step toward integrated people-centered eye care (IPEC). Thus, this retrospective study aims to elucidate VI trends across age and gender of the patients who visited our centres in southern and eastern India. METHODS Electronic medical records of all new patients who visited the network were included. VI was defined as visual acuity less than 6/12; unilateral VI was based on the worse presenting eye (the other eye being normal), and bilateral VI was based on the better eye. "Total VI" includes both unilateral and bilateral VI. RESULTS The records of 7,31,307 patients from January to December 2019 were extracted. Males were 54%. The mean age was 40 years (SD: 19.16 years). The majority of patients (46.54%) visited a primary care centre. Centres in Andhra Pradesh saw the largest number of patients (46%). Approximately 65% of all patients presented had no VI in either eye. Total VI was 23.5% at the primary-centre level and approximately 45% at other levels, the highest being in Odisha. More females accessed care at primary and secondary centres (46.6%) than at higher levels of care (44%). Odisha had the lowest number of females accessing care (43.01%). CONCLUSION Non-visually impairing conditions form an important reason for patients visiting our eye care facilities. Strategies focusing on improving access to eye care for females should be planned at all levels, especially in Odisha.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dementia is associated with individual vision impairment (VI) and hearing impairment (HI). However, little is known about their associations with motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR), a pre-dementia stage. We investigated the association of VI, HI, and dual sensory impairment (DSI) with MCR and to further evaluate causal relationships using Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS First, an observational study was conducted in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of VI, HI, and DSI with MCR using the logistic regression models and Cox proportional hazard models, respectively. Second, evaluate the causal association between VI and HI with MCR using MR analysis. The GWAS data was used for genetic instruments, including 88,250 of European ancestry (43,877 cases and 44,373 controls) and 504,307 with "white British" ancestry (100,234 cases and 404,073 controls), respectively; MCR information was obtained from the GWAS with 22,593 individuals. Inverse variance weighted was the primary method and sensitivity analysis was used to evaluate the robustness of MR methods. RESULTS In the observational study, VI (HR: 1.767, 95%CI: 1.331-2.346; p < 0.001), HI (HR: 1.461, 95%CI: 1.196-1.783; p < 0.001), and DSI (HR: 1.507, 95%CI: 1.245-1.823; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with increased risk of MCR. For the MR, no causal relationship between VI (OR: 0.902, 95% CI: 0.593-1.372; p = 0.631) and HI (OR: 1.016, 95% CI: 0.989-1.043; p = 0.248) with MCR risk, which is consistent with the sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSION VI, HI, and DSI were significantly associated with MCR, but MR analysis failed to provide evidence of their causal relationship. Emphasized the importance of sensory impairment screening in identifying high-risk populations for dementia.

Abstract
Objective The measures implemented to control the spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could affect children's mental and vision health. Youth particularly from minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds were more likely to be impacted by these measures. This study aimed to examine the mental health of children with vision impairment and associated factors in North-western China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,036 secondary school children living in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Participants completed a survey on sociodemographic and lifestyle information and answered the Chinese version of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) questionnaire. Presenting visual acuity was measured by a trained enumerator. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify potential risk factors for mental health problems. Results Responses from 1,992 (97.8%) children were included in the analysis after excluding those with incomplete mental health outcome data. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress symptoms within the dataset were 28.9, 46.4, and 22.3%, respectively. The distribution of children with different stress levels differed significantly between those with and without vision impairment (p = 0.03). Multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that depression symptoms decreased with higher parental education (OR, 0.76, 95% confidence intervals (CI):0.63-0.96), longer sleep duration (OR, 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81-0.97) and longer study time (OR, 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74-0.91), whereas they increased with higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.19, 95% CI: 1.08-1.32). Anxiety symptoms decreased with higher parental education (OR, 0.80, 95% CI: 0.66-0.96) and increased with higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.27) and being a left-behind child (OR, 1.26, 95% CI: 1.04-1.54). In addition, stress symptoms decreased with longer sleep duration (OR, 0.92, 95%CI: 0.85-0.99) and increased with higher number of siblings (OR, 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01-1.19), higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.28) and older age (OR,1.12, 95% CI: 1.004-1.24). Conclusion A considerable proportion of our sample experienced mental health problems during the pandemic. Healthcare planners in China should consider interventions such as reducing recreational screen time, ensuring sufficient sleep, and timely detection of mental health symptoms among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups.

Abstract
Aims To survey orthoptists' confidence in communicating with patients with communication impairments and to investigate resources orthoptists are currently using to aid assessment and management and to explore future resources that may be beneficial. Methods and Procedures Practicing orthoptists (n = 63; median age range: 31-35 years old) completed an online survey with quantitative and qualitative questions which investigated approaches to adult and paediatric patients with communication impairments and any communication tools used. Analysis of quantitative survey responses was conducted using IBM SPSS v27. Content analysis of qualitative responses was done. Outcomes and Results Simple communication strategies (e.g., eye contact and body language, repeating/rephrasing sentences) were commonly used with both adult and paediatric patients while more complex strategies (e.g., electronic visual aids, writing key words/concepts) were rarely used. Usage of communication strategies was not affected by length of work experience, workplace clinical speciality or training during their clinical degree or after graduation (p < 0.05). Most participants (71.2%) reported being unaware of resources available for orthoptists to assist in the assessment and management of patients with communication impairments. Conclusions and Implications Orthoptists have adopted some communication strategies to improve their interactions with patients with communication impairments, despite limited resources. With proper resources, such as training in supportive communication techniques, they can provide optimal patient care, making it essential to identify what kind of resources would be most appropriate.

Abstract
Introduction The lens, essential for vision, can be impaired by cataracts, leading to partial or complete reversible vision loss. Common risk factors include aging, diabetes, and steroid use, with significant financial implications. Limited awareness in Saudi Arabia necessitates further research to reduce cataract prevalence and increase knowledge about steroid-induced cataracts. Methodology This was a cross-sectional study in Al Ahsa City, Saudi Arabia that aims to assess awareness of cataracts induced by long-term steroid use. Data was collected via an online survey and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Our study results show that 69.8% (n=291) of participants were female, and 30.2% (n=126) were male, with the majority (62.6%, n=261) having a university education. Notably, 91.1% (n=380) reported no steroid use, while 8.9% (n=37) reported long-term use, and 10.1% (n=42) used steroids topically. There are moderate awareness levels regarding cataract and steroid associations, with 68.1% (n=284) recognizing topical steroids as the common culprits. Logistic regression highlighted the positive correlation between knowledge of cataract risks due to steroid use and actual steroid use, corroborated by a notable 73.0% (n=27) steroid usage among high-awareness individuals. Conclusion Our study underscores moderate awareness regarding steroid-related cataract risks in Al Ahsa City. Educational status significantly influenced understanding, highlighting the importance of targeted health education initiatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phosphorylated tau (p-tau) accumulation, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), can also be found in the retina. However, it is uncertain whether it is linked to AD or another tauopathy. METHODS Retinas from 164 individuals, with and without AD, were analyzed for p-tau accumulation and its relationship with age, dementia, and vision impairment. RESULTS Retinal p-tau pathology showed a consistent pattern with four stages and a molecular composition distinct from that of cerebral tauopathies. The stage of retinal p-tau pathology correlated with age (r = 0.176, P = 0.024) and was associated with AD (odds ratio [OR] 3.193; P = 0.001), and inflammation (OR = 2.605; P = 0.001). Vision impairment was associated with underlying eye diseases (β = 0.292; P = 0.001) and the stage of retinal p-tau pathology (β = 0.192; P = 0.030) in a linear regression model. CONCLUSIONS The results show the presence of a primary retinal tauopathy that is distinct from cerebral tauopathies.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the quality of life (QOL) and level of depression among participants with high myopia in Nigeria and the demographic factors associated with these outcomes. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 adult participants with high myopia (defined as refractive error ≤-5.00 D or worse, and uncorrected visual acuity worse than 6/18 in the better seeing eye) attending ophthalmology centres in Nigeria from 2 October 2021 to 30 August 2022. The means and standard deviations were calculated for each of the four domains of World Health Organization Quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF) using the transformed scores. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale was used to assess the level of depression. RESULTS The highest and the lowest mean scores of WHOQOL-BREF domains were found for the psychological and physical health domains (mean percentage scores were 67.0 [95% confidence intervals (CI) 64.1-68.9] and 55.3 (95%CI 51.8-58.8, P<0.001), respectively. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences in physical health with educational status (higher among those with tertiary education: mean difference 0.9, 95%CI -0.2-2.1; P=0.049), differences in psychological health with working status (higher among those who were working 1.2, 95%CI 0.3-2.1; P=0.012). Also, the result showed a statistically significant association between environmental health and marital status (higher among non-married: 1.7, 95%CI -0.9-2.3; P=0.012) while overall health was associated with place of residence (higher in urban areas: 2.3, 95%CI 1.2-3.5; P=0.024). For depression, one in every nine participants reported major depressive symptom, mostly younger people (aged 16-29 vs 30-49y: 17.0% vs 0, P=0.019), and slightly more women than men (14.3% vs 0, P=0.064). There were significant negative correlations between the depression scores and psychological health (r=-0.48, P<0.001), physical health (r=-0.29, P=0.002), social and relationship (r=-0.49, P<0.001), environmental (r=-0.48, P<0.001) and overall health (r=-0.49, P<0.001). CONCLUSION People with high myopia have a relatively moderate QOL, but poor physical health, particularly the younger age group, and women who are more likely to experience clinically relevant depression. Eye care professionals should consider possible referrals for counselling for people with high myopia.

Abstract
Background Certified training must be provided for lay vision screeners prior to their conduct of a vision screening programme. However, the effectiveness of trained lay screeners does deteriorate over time. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a recertification vision screening training module using the KieVision™ Preschool Vision Screening Kit for preschool teachers in Malaysia. Methods This was a randomised control trial. Fifty-nine preschool teachers previously enrolled in a Knowledge Transfer Programme were divided into a Study Group (n = 31) to receive recertification training and a Control Group (n = 28) to attend briefing sessions. Subjects was then asked to perform vision screening on 15 preschool children aged 4 years old-6 years old at their respective premises, then verified by optometrists after 2 weeks from the initial screening on the same children. Results A total of 894 children were screened, with the Study Group and Control Group screened 49.7% and 50.3%, respectively. There was higher validity in vision screening findings from the Study Group (sensitivity = 66.7%, positive predictive value (PPV) = 61.5%) compared to the Control Group (sensitivity = 36.0 %, PPV = 40.9%). Conclusion Teachers who received recertification training were more competent in detecting children's vision impairment using KieVision™ Preschool Vision Screening Kit. Thus, timely recertification training should be emphasised to ensure sustainable consistency and reliability of vision screening programmes conducted by lay vision screeners.

Abstract
Purpose The study aims to assess the perception of optical spectacles use among the Ha'il region population in Saudi Arabia. Patients and Methods A cross-sectional survey was distributed via various social media applications to the residents of the Ha'il region. An online questionnaire was designed and included informed consent and questions assessing the participants' perceptions about wearing eyeglasses, contact lenses, and general eye health. Results 32.4% of the participants think that long-term eyeglasses wearing worsens vision, and 43% think eyeglasses wearing improves vision. 75.2% believe that long-term use of glasses could cause lifetime dependency on eyeglasses. Regarding contact lenses, 45.9% believe that long-term wearing worsens vision, and 24.1% think long-term wearing of contact lenses improves vision. 60% think long-term use of lenses causes lifetime dependency on those contact lenses. Conclusion Our results highlighted the misconceptions among the study population regarding wearing prescribed eyeglasses and contact lenses. Thus, education programs and media are warranted to correct the misconceptions about spectacles and raise the awareness about refractive errors and treatment options.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of low luminance on face recognition, specifically facial identity discrimination (FID) and facial expression recognition (FER), in adults with central vision loss (CVL) and peripheral vision loss (PVL) and to explore the association between clinical vision measures and low luminance FID and FER. METHODS Participants included 33 adults with CVL, 17 with PVL and 20 controls. FID and FER were assessed under photopic and low luminance conditions. For the FID task, 12 sets of three faces with neutral expressions were presented and participants asked to indicate the odd-face-out. For FER, 12 single faces were presented and participants asked to name the expression (neutral, happy or angry). Photopic and low luminance visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) were recorded for all participants and for the PVL group, Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) 24-2 mean deviation (MD). RESULTS FID accuracy in CVL, and to a lesser extent PVL, was reduced under low compared with photopic luminance (mean reduction 20% and 8% respectively; p < 0.001). FER accuracy was reduced only in CVL (mean reduction 25%; p < 0.001). For both CVL and PVL, low luminance and photopic VA and CS were moderately to strongly correlated with low luminance FID (ρ = 0.61-0.77, p < 0.05). For PVL, better eye HFA 24-2 MD was moderately correlated with low luminance FID (ρ = 0.54, p = 0.02). Results were similar for low luminance FER. Together, photopic VA and CS explained 75% of the variance in low luminance FID, and photopic VA explained 61% of the variance in low luminance FER. Low luminance vision measures explained little additional variance. CONCLUSION Low luminance significantly reduced face recognition, particularly for adults with CVL. Worse VA and CS were associated with reduced face recognition. Clinically, photopic VA is a good predictor of face recognition under low luminance conditions.

Abstract
Ocular diseases are a highly heterogeneous group of phenotypes, caused by a spectrum of genetic variants and environmental factors that exhibit diverse clinical symptoms. As a result of its anatomical location, structure and immune privilege, the eye is an ideal system to assess and validate novel genetic therapies. Advances in genome editing have revolutionized the field of biomedical science, enabling researchers to understand the biology behind disease mechanisms and allow the treatment of several health conditions, including ocular pathologies. The advent of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based gene editing facilitates efficient and specific genetic modifications in the nucleic acid sequence, resulting in permanent changes at the genomic level. This approach has advantages over other treatment strategies and is promising for the treatment of various genetic and non-genetic ocular conditions. This review provides an overview of the CRISPR/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system and summarizes recent advances in the therapeutic application of CRISPR/Cas9 for the treatment of various ocular pathologies, as well as future challenges.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the effect of visual impairment (VI), its severity, and ocular diseases on vision-related and health-related quality of life (QoL) in Jordan. Patients and Methods A comparative, cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted among a group of 278 patients with VI aged ≥ 18 years, and age and sex-matched control group of 278 individuals with no VI. An interviewer administered the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and the Medical Outcomes Study 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) to all participants. Results All the mean VFQ-25 subscales scores, physical component scale (PCS) and the mental component scale (MCS) of the SF-12 were significantly lower in patients with VI compared to controls with no VI. The VFQ-25 subscales (except general health and ocular pain), PCS, and MCS scores significantly decreased with more severity of VI. In the adjusted multivariate analysis, lower level of education (p=0.013), male sex (p=0.016), and the presence of cerebrovascular disease (p=0.019) were significantly associated with lower VFQ-25 composite scores in visually impaired patients compared to controls. Ocular disease duration of >5 years and progressive VI were significantly associated with lower VFQ-25 composite scores (p= 0.026 and p<0.001) respectively, in patients with VI. Glaucoma had a significantly larger reduction in mean scores of all the VFQ-25 subscales, and the PCS of the SF-12 compared to all other ocular diseases. Conclusion Both VI and increasing severity of impairment were associated with reduced vision-related and health-related quality of life in adult Jordanians. Glaucoma patients and less educated people were particularly affected. Routine assessment of QoL in visually impaired patients and improving referral protocols to vision rehabilitation services is recommended to improve the QoL in those patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine if vision impairment (VI) is associated with food insecurity among the United States (US) adults. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of US adults ≥18 years below a threshold of 150% poverty from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), years 2011-2018. Outcome measures included food insecurity status, based on response to the NHIS adult (10-item) food insecurity tool, either as a binary (food secure or insecure) or ordinal (high, marginal, low, and very low) variable. VI was defined as self-reported trouble seeing, even when wearing glasses or contact lenses. Multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders examined associations between VI and food insecurity. RESULTS Participants (N = 62075) were majority female (57%), White (62%), and non-Hispanic (74%). Of them, 16% reported VI and 28% were food insecure. In fully adjusted logistic regression models, adults with VI had 216% higher odds (95% CI = 2.01-2.31) of being food insecure than adults without VI. Further, there was a dose-response relationship between VI and food insecurity noted in a multinomial model: VI predicted 159% higher risk of marginal food security (95% CI = 1.44-1.75), 197% higher risk of low food security (95% CI = 1.80-2.16), and 295% higher risk of very low food security (95% CI = 2.69-3.22), as compared to high food security. CONCLUSION VI is associated with food insecurity, increasingly so among adults with highest levels of food insecurity in this national sample of low-income US adults. This data highlights the need for targeted interventions to address and reduce the burden of food insecurity among US adults with VI.

Abstract
Individuals with vision impairment (VI) are less physically active than their sighted peers, heightening their risk of chronic illness. This study aimed to explore real and perceived barriers and promoters of an active lifestyle among adults with VI. We used mixed-methods, including a quantitative analysis of spatial data and a qualitative analysis of input from focus groups. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, graphical and thematic analysis. The spatial analysis highlighted frequent impediments, including high proportions of inaccessible crosswalks and stairs, a high density of obstacles (12/km) and almost inexistent guidance markings (0.1/km). Factors influencing active lifestyle of individuals with VI reported in the focus groups included: VI severity and self-confidence; accessibility of the physical environment as well as support and consideration of the society; use of behavioral strategies, striving for good health and willpower. Combined psychosocial, behavioral and infrastructural modifications could enhance active lifestyles among adults with VI. Consideration of the needs of individuals with VI is critical among environmental planners. Sustainable solutions for improving accessibility and mobility in the city for individuals with VI will influence not only their social integration but will enable them to adopt an active lifestyle and reduce their risk of chronic illness.

Abstract
Purpose In the United States, AMD is a leading cause of low vision that leads to central vision loss and has a high co-occurrence with hearing loss. The impact of central vision loss on the daily functioning of older individuals cannot be fully addressed without considering their hearing status. We investigated the impact of combined central vision loss and hearing loss on spatial localization, an ability critical for social interactions and navigation. Methods Sixteen older adults with central vision loss primarily due to AMD, with or without co-occurring hearing loss, completed a spatial perimetry task in which they verbally reported the directions of visual or auditory targets. Auditory testing was done with eyes open in a dimly lit room or with a blindfold. Twenty-three normally sighted, age-matched, and hearing-matched control subjects also completed the task. Results Subjects with central vision loss missed visual targets more often. They showed increased deviations in visual biases from control subjects as the scotoma size increased. However, these deficits did not generalize to sound localization. As hearing loss became more severe, the sound localization variability increased, and this relationship was not altered by coexisting central vision loss. For both control and central vision loss subjects, sound localization was less reliable when subjects wore blindfolds, possibly due to the absence of visual contextual cues. Conclusions Although central vision loss impairs visual localization, it does not impair sound localization and does not prevent vision from providing useful contextual cues for sound localization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Understanding the intersection of age, ethnicity, and disability will become increasingly important as the global population ages and becomes more diverse. By 2060, Hispanics will comprise 28% of the U.S. POPULATION This study examines critical associations between sensory impairment, social isolation, and cognitive functioning among Hispanic older adults. METHODS Our sample consisted of 557 Hispanic older adults that participated in Rounds 1-3 or Rounds 5-7 of the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Longitudinal mediation models across a three-year span were estimated using Mplus, with vision, hearing, and dual sensory impairments predicting cognitive functioning directly and indirectly through social isolation. RESULTS Findings indicated that cognitive functioning was concurrently and, in certain cases, longitudinally predicted by vision and dual sensory impairments and by social isolation. Contrary to expectations, vision and hearing impairments were not predictive of social isolation. Dual sensory impairment was associated with social isolation, yet no significant indirect associations were found for sensory impairments predicting cognitive functioning through social isolation. DISCUSSION The finding that social isolation did not mediate the relationship between sensory impairment and cognitive decline among Hispanic older adults in the U.S. is contrary to findings from other studies that were not specifically focused on this population. This finding may be evidence that culturally motivated family support and intergenerational living buffer the impact of sensory impairments in later life. Findings suggest that Hispanic older adults experiencing dual sensory impairments may benefit from interventions that foster social support and include family members.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study investigated the health-related and vision-related quality of life measures of adults with low vision compared to healthy individuals in Trinidad and Tobago. The health-related quality of life (HRQOL-14) and the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) were administered to 20 participants with low vision caused by diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, as well as 20 participants with no visual problems (control). Participants were recruited from the University Eye Clinic in Trinidad and Tobago. Compared to the controls, more participants in the low-vision group had lower age-adjusted NEI-VFQ-25 scores (48.3% vs. 95.1%; p < 0.001), had poor general (47.5% vs. 10%, p = 0.004) and mental (100% vs. 10%, p < 0.042) health, experienced greater activity limitation due to impairment or health problems (85% vs. 20%, p < 0.001), needed help with personal care (27.5% vs. 0%, p < 0.009) and daily routine (67.5% vs. 0%, p < 0.001), and experienced sleep problems (97.5% vs. 65%, p < 0.001) and symptoms of anxiety (100% vs. 90%, p = 0.042). All the diabetic retinopathy participants (100%, p = 0.028) had two or more impairments or vision problems compared to none in the other low-vision participants. In summary, the HRQOL-14 and NEI-VFQ-25 scores were significantly reduced in low-vision participants, who also demonstrated a greater vulnerability to poor quality of life in the presence of diabetes retinopathy. These findings have important clinical implications regarding offering appropriate support and interventions to improve quality of life outcomes in individuals with low vision.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE The eye examination is a simple and effective intervention that involves a series of tests to evaluate vision and check for eye disease. This study aimed to assess the frequency of eye examinations among adults in Poland and to identify factors associated with the frequency of such examinations. MATERIAL AND METHODS The questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was carried out in December 2022 on a non-probability quota sample of 1,076 adults in Poland. A computer-assisted web interview technique was used. The study questionnaire included a set of questions on eye health, eye examinations, and socio-demographic characteristics. RESULTS Of the 1,076 respondents, 7.4% had an eye examination in the last 30 days, almost one-quarter (24.2%) had an eye examination more than 1 month but not more than 12 months ago, 13.9% had an eye examination in the last 1-2 years, and 24.1% had an eye examination more than 2 years ago but not more than 3 years ago. Among the respondents, 7.1% declared that they had never had an eye examination. Of the 12 different factors analyzed in this study, wearing spectacles or lenses and self-reported level of knowledge on eye diseases were the only factors significantly associated with higher odds of eye examinations in the last 12 months or 2 years. There was no significant impact of gender, educational level, place of residence, health status, or economic status (p>0.05) on the frequency of eye examinations, neither in the last 12 months nor in the last 2-3 years. CONCLUSIONS The study showed that a significant percentage of adults in Poland do not have regular eye examinations. There was a lack of socio-economic differences (including place of residence and economic status) in the frequency of eye examinations. There is an urgent need for health education on preventive eye examinations and eye care among adults in Poland.

Abstract
Aims Our aim was to investigate the prevalence, incidence, and persistence of visual impairment (VI) and their correlates among the Chinese population with diabetes mellitus (DM) over 3 years. Materials and methods The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey is the first nationally representative longitudinal survey of the Chinese population. A cross-sectional analysis of prevalent VI in 2015 consisted of 2,173 participants with DM. A longitudinal observation of incident and persistent VI consisted of 1,633 participants from 2015 to 2018. Risk factors of VI were identified via univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results Among our study population with DM, 11.8% reported VI in 2015, 4.5% had persistent VI from 2015 to 2018, and 8.9% developed VI in 2018. Factors identified to be correlated to VI (p < 0.05) were older age, being a woman, lower educational attainment, living in a rural area, application of DM medication and non-pharmacological treatment, receiving DM-related tests, use of spectacles, and poorer health status. Conclusion This most recent national data provides a baseline for future public health initiatives on VI among the Chinese population with DM. With multiple risk factors identified, these could provide concurrent targets for various public health strategies and interventions with the aim of reducing the burden of VI among the population with DM in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that sensory impairment is linked to dementia; however, the role of social network and leisure activity in this relationship is unclear. OBJECTIVE Examine the association of hearing and visual impairment with dementia, and whether a rich social network and leisure activity moderates this association. METHODS Dementia-free older adults from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (n = 2,579) were followed up for up for a median of 10 years (interquartile range = 6). Visual impairment was assessed with a reading acuity test, and hearing impairment was ascertained via self-report and medical records. Dementia was diagnosed following international criteria. Data on social network and leisure activity was collected via self-report. Hazard ratios (HRs) of dementia risk were derived from Cox regression models. RESULTS Dual impairment, but not single impairment in hearing and vision was associated with a higher risk of dementia (HR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.27). Compared to participants with no sensory impairment and a moderate-to-rich social network, those with dual impairment and low social network or leisure activity had higher dementia risk (HR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.43 to 3.22; HR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.43 to 3.22, respectively), whereas participants with dual impairment with a moderate-to-rich social network or leisure activity did not have significantly higher dementia risk (HR; 1.42, 95% CI: 0.87 to 2.33; HR; 1.42, 95% CI: 0.87 to 2.33, respectively). CONCLUSION A richer social network and participation in stimulating activities may mitigate the higher dementia risk in older adults with dual impairment in vision and hearing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing and vision impairments are risk factors for cognitive decline; less is known about dual sensory impairment. This study quantifies the association between dual sensory impairment and 8-year change in memory among older adults. METHODS Data (N = 5552) were from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Memory (immediate/delayed word recall, subjective memory) was measured annually (2011 to 2019). Hearing and vision impairments were measured by self-report. Association between dual sensory impairment and 8-year change in memory was assessed using multivariate linear mixed effect models and generalized logistic mixed models. RESULTS Rate of memory decline was most accelerated among participants with dual sensory impairment. For example, 8-year decline in delayed word recall was -1.03 (95% confidene interval: -1.29, -0.77) for dual sensory impairment versus -0.79 (-0.92, -0.67) for single and -0.56 (-0.63, -0.48) for no impairment. CONCLUSION Older adults with dual sensory impairment may be at particularly higher risk for cognitive decline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to describe the self-reported level of eyesight amongst a cohort of relatively healthy older Australian adults, and to investigate associations between poorer self-rated eyesight and demographic, health, and functional characteristics METHODS: The ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP) study was embedded in a multisite trial which recruited independently living Australians from general practices (2010-2014). Self-rated eyesight was recorded on a paper-based questionnaire as Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, Very poor, or Completely blind at the baseline study wave RESULTS: Data from 14 592 participants (aged 70-95 years, 54.61% female) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Eighty percent of participants reported excellent or good eyesight (n = 11 677). People with complete blindness were precluded from enrolling but 299 participants (2.0%) reported poor or very poor eyesight, and 2616 rated their eyesight as fair (17.9%). Lower levels of eyesight were associated with being older, female, fewer years of formal education, a primary language other than English, smoking, and self-reported macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinopathy, cataracts, and hearing problems (each p ≤ 0.021). People with lower levels of eyesight had a higher number of falls, frailty characteristics, and depressive symptoms, and lower mental and physical health functioning scores (each p < 0.001) CONCLUSIONS: Whilst most of these healthy older Australians reported good or excellent eyesight, a notable minority reported poor or very poor eyesight, and this was associated with a range of poorer health measures. These findings support the need for additional resources to prevent vision loss and associated sequelae.

Abstract
Para sport classification aims to minimize the impact of impairments on the outcome of competition. The International Paralympic Committee requires classification systems to be evidence based and sport specific, yet the sport of goalball uses a structure that is not supported by evidence demonstrating its legitimacy for competition. This study aimed to establish expert opinions on how a sport-specific system of classification should be structured in the sport of goalball. Using a three-round Delphi survey, 30 international experts expressed their views across topics linked to goalball classification. Participants were divided as to whether the current system fulfills the aim to minimize the impact of impairment on competition. Most felt that less impairment should be required to compete but that the one-class structure should remain. Experts identified measures of visual function that should be considered and 15 core components of individual goalball performance. Findings constitute a crucial first step toward evidence-based classification in goalball.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) act to identify the patient's objective experience while receiving care. PREM data can provide feedback to professionals on patients' personal experience of care processes, quality of care and insight into patient expectations. This can support service improvements and person-centeredness of care. Despite this, PREMs are not currently routinely collected for any primary eye care services in Wales, inclusive of the National Low Vision Service Wales (LVSW). The primary aim of this project was to develop and pilot a community low-vision, service-specific, PREM (LVSWPREM). METHODS The development of the LVSWPREMs was performed in partnership with LVSW service users. Fourteen people attended three successive, 1.5-h online focus groups, and informed the development of a draft of LVSWPREMs inclusive of item generation and face validity. Following several rounds of iterative improvements based on the feedback gathered during the focus groups, LVSWPREM V4.0 was agreed upon and piloted for a period of 3 months within Hywel Dda University Health Board. Reliability of the final LVSWPREM V4.0 was assessed using Cronbach α. RESULTS The final LVSWPREMs consisted of two parts: (1) LVSW-specific items and (2) a generic PREM tool approved by the Welsh Government for use across National Health Service Wales. Reliability analyses with item deletion were conducted for each construct separately using Cronbach α and were 0.94 and 0.63 for parts 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION The LVSWPREM is a validated, reliable tool, which can be used to provide information regarding patients' experience of accessing a community-based, low-vision service. Developed in partnership with people with vision impairment, it has the potential to be useful as a means of patient engagement and improvement in the delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Abstract
Background and aim The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.5 billion and 2.2 billion people have hearing and vision impairment, respectively. The burden of these non-communicable diseases is highest in low- and middle-income countries due to a lack of services and health professionals. The WHO has recommended universal health coverage and integrated service delivery to improve ear and eye care services. This scoping review describes the evidence for combined hearing and vision screening programs. Method A keyword search of three electronic databases, namely Scopus, MEDLINE (PubMed), and Web of Science, was conducted, resulting in 219 results. After removing duplicates and screening based on eligibility criteria, data were extracted from 19 included studies. The Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer Manual and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyzes (PRISMA) Extension for Scoping Reviews were followed. A narrative synthesis was conducted. Results Most studies (63.2%) were from high-income countries, with 31.6% from middle-income and 5.2% from low-income countries. The majority of studies (78.9%) involved children and the four studies reporting on adults all included adults above 50 years of age. Vision screening was most commonly performed with the "Tumbling E" and "Snellen Chart," while hearing was typically screened using pure tone audiometry. Studies reported referral rates as the most common outcome with sensitivity and specificity rates not reported in any included articles. Reported benefits of combined vision and hearing screenings included earlier detection of vision and hearing difficulties to support functioning and quality of life as well as resource sharing for reduced costs. Challenges to combined screening included ineffective follow-up systems, management of test equipment, and monitoring of screening personnel. Conclusions There is limited research evidence for combined hearing and vision screening programs. Although potential benefits are demonstrated, especially for mHealth-supported programs in communities, more feasibility and implementation research are required, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and across all age groups. Developing universal, standardized reporting guidelines for combined sensory screening programs is recommended to enhance the standardization and effectiveness of combined sensory screening programs.

Abstract
Implementation of eye care behaviors may reduce the risk of eye symptoms and diseases. This study aimed to assess eye care behaviors and identify factors associated with eye care practices among adults in Poland. This cross-sectional survey was carried out between 9 and 12 December 2022 on a nationwide random quota sample of adults in Poland. The study questionnaire included a set of questions on 10 different eye care behaviors. The study population included 1076 participants with a mean age of 45.7 ± 16.2 years, and 54.2% of participants were females. The most common (30.2%) eye care behavior was the use of good lighting indoors, and 27.3% used sunglasses with a UV filter. More than one-fifth of participants declared taking regular screen breaks and limiting screen time. Less than one-tenth of participants used dietary supplements with lutein, beta-carotene, or zinc. Out of 12 factors assessed in this study, self-reported knowledge of eye diseases was the most important factor associated (p < 0.05) with eye care behaviors. There were no economic or educational gaps (p > 0.05) in the implementation of most of the eye care behaviors among adults in Poland. This study revealed a low level of implementation of eye care behaviors among adults in Poland.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Persons living with, versus without, dementia (PLWD) have heightened fall-risk. Little is known about whether fall-risk factors differ by dementia status. METHODS Using the 2015 and 2016 National Health and Aging Trends Study, we prospectively identified fall-risk factors over a 12-month period among community-living older adults ≥65 years with and without dementia (n = 5581). RESULTS Fall rates were higher among PLWD compared to persons without dementia (45.5% vs. 30.9%). In a multivariable model including sociodemographic, health, function, and environmental characteristics as predictors, vision impairment (OR: 2.22, 95% CI: 1.12-4.40), and living with a spouse versus alone (OR: 2.43, 95% CI: 1.09-5.43) predicted falls among PLWD, but not among persons without dementia. History of previous falls predicted subsequent falls regardless of dementia status (OR: 6.20, 95% CI: 3.81-10.09, and OR: 2.92, 95% CI: 2.50-3.40, respectively). DISCUSSION Incorporating appropriate fall-risk factors could inform effective falls screening and prevention strategies for PLWD. HIGHLIGHTS 46% of persons with dementia had ≥1 falls versus 31% of those without dementia in 2016. Vision impairment and living with a spouse predicted falls in persons with dementia. Study results support tailored fall prevention strategies for persons with dementia.

Abstract
Introduction Cognitive training can potentially reduce risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. To support implementation of cognitive training in the broader population of older adults, it is critical to evaluate intervention implementation and efficacy among representative samples, particularly those at highest risk of cognitive decline. Hearing and vision impairments are highly prevalent among older adults and confer increased risk of cognitive decline/dementia. Whether cognitive training interventions enroll and are designed to include this important subgroup is unknown. Methods A scoping review of PubMed and PsycINFO was conducted to examine the inclusion of older adults with hearing and vision impairment in cognitive training interventions. Two independent reviewers completed a full-text review of eligible articles. Eligible articles included cognitive training and multimodal randomized controlled trials and a study population that was cognitively unimpaired, aged ≥55-years, and community dwelling. Articles were primary outcome papers published in English. Results Among the 130 articles included in the review, 103 were cognitive training interventions (79%) and 27 were multimodal interventions (21%). More than half the trials systematically excluded participants with hearing and/or vision impairment (n = 60, 58%). Few studies reported hearing and vision measurement (cognitive: n = 16, 16%; multimodal: n = 3, 11%) or incorporated universal design and accessibility into intervention design (cognitive: n = 7, 7%; multimodal: n = 0, 0%). Discussion Older adults with hearing and vision impairment are underrepresented in cognitive training interventions. Reporting of hearing and vision measurement, proper justification of exclusions, and inclusion of accessibility and universal intervention design are also lacking. These findings raise concerns about whether current trial findings apply to those with hearing and vision impairment and generalize to the broader population of older adults. It is critical to include more diverse study populations and integrate accessibility into intervention design to include and better represent older adults with hearing and vision impairment. Highlights Cognitive training interventions underrepresent hearing and vision impairment.Sensory measurement and proper justification of exclusions are rarely reported.Interventions lack inclusion of accessibility and universal intervention design.More diverse study populations are needed in cognitive training interventions.Integration of accessibility into cognitive training intervention design is needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate abandonment rates of near-vision low vision devices (LVDs) and factors that influence abandonment among patients attending a tertiary low vision rehabilitation centre in South India. METHODS Two hundred and eighty-six adults with low vision completed the modified device abandonment survey 1 year following device prescription. The survey included six questions: possession of device, timing of last use, reasons for abandonment, tasks for which the device was used, payment type and change in quality of life (QoL) from device use. The primary outcome measure was abandonment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate factors for abandonment. RESULTS Three hundred and twelve near-vision devices were prescribed (mean, 1.09 device per patient.) Stand magnifiers (35%) followed by hand-held magnifiers (24%) were most frequently prescribed. Mean logMAR visual acuity (Snellen) in the better-seeing eye was 0.80 (6/38). Of the prescribed near-vision devices, 22% (95% CI, 17 to 27) were abandoned. Patients who abandoned the device were significantly older than those who did not (49.3 ± 17.2 vs. 43.5 ± 18.1 years; p = 0.03). In multivariable analysis, patients reporting no change in their QoL from device use had higher odds of abandoning the device (OR: 63.97; 95% CI, 23.77 to 172.12). Device-related (31%) and psychological (30%) factors were the most frequent reasons for abandonment. Among device-related issues, the most frequent reason was that patients felt the device was too complex to use (50%) followed by being too cumbersome to use (25%). CONCLUSION The abandonment rate for near-vision LVDs in South India was comparable with that reported in high-income countries. Patients reporting no change in their QoL had a higher likelihood of abandoning the device compared with those who reported some change. Device-related and psychological factors were the most frequent reasons for abandonment. These results can be used to develop strategies to improve compliance with use of devices.

Abstract
In response to the Coronavirus disease, the United Kingdom (UK) government introduced lockdown measures requiring people to isolate and adhere to social distancing. This article uses Constraints Negotiation Theory to examine effects of the lockdown on people with vision impairment (PwVI). The research is based on an online survey of 639 PwVI in the UK. The analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling in SmartPLS. The findings show that the lockdown had a negative effect on the participation and well-being of PwVI. However, they also show that the negative effects could be negotiated by adapting activities. This emphasises the need for a more inclusive response to current or future pandemics that recognises the vulnerabilities of PwVI and helps them to overcome the challenges associated with any measures that are introduced.

Abstract
(1) Background: Spheno-orbital meningioma (SOM) is a very rare subtype of meningioma which arises from the sphenoid ridge with an orbital extension. It exhibits intraosseous tumor growth with hyperostosis and a widespread soft-tissue growth at the dura. The intra-orbital invasion results in painless proptosis and slowly progressing visual impairment. (2) Methods: We present a case of a 46-year-old woman with SOM and compressive optic nerve neuropathy related to it. Her corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was decreased to 20/100, she had extensive visual field (VF) scotoma, dyschromatopsia, impaired pattern-reversal visual-evoked potential (PVEP), and decreased thicknesses of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC), measured with the swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and a pale optic nerve disc in her left eye. Brain CT and MRI showed a lesion at the base of the anterior cranial fossa, involving the sphenoid wing and orbit. Pterional craniotomy and a partial removal of the tumor at the base of the skull and in the left orbit with the resection of the lesional dura mater and bony defect reconstruction were performed. (3) Results: The histological examination revealed meningothelial meningioma (WHO G1). Decreased CDVA and VF defects completely recovered, and the color vision score and PVEP improved following the surgery, but RNFL and GCC remained impaired. No tumor recurrence was observed at a follow-up of 78 months. (4) Conclusions: Optic nerve dysfunction has the capacity to improve once the compression has been relieved despite the presence of the structural features of optic nerve atrophy.

Abstract
Retinopathy, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), are the leading cause of blindness among seniors, working-age populations, and children. However, the pathophysiology of retinopathy remains unclear. Accumulating studies demonstrate that amino acid metabolism is associated with retinopathy. This study discusses the characterization of amino acids in DR, AMD, and ROP by metabolomics from clinical and basic research perspectives. The features of amino acids in retinopathy were summarized using a comparative approach based on existing high-throughput metabolomics studies from PubMed. Besides taking up a large proportion, amino acids appear in both human and animal, intraocular and peripheral samples. Among them, some metabolites differ significantly in all three types of retinopathy, including glutamine, glutamate, alanine, and others. Studies on the mechanisms behind retinal cell death caused by glutamate accumulation are on the verge of making some progress. To develop potential therapeutics, it is imperative to understand amino acid-induced retinal functional alterations and the underlying mechanisms. This review delineates the significance of amino acid metabolism in retinopathy and provides possible direction to discover therapeutic targets for retinopathy.

Abstract
Background Visual impairment (VI) is a strong predictor of depression in middle-aged and older adults. However, the underlying mechanisms and pathways have not been well characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Internet use and social participation mediate the effects of self-reported VI on depression. Methods The study used the fourth wave of cross-sectional data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including 19,766 Chinese adults. Depression was assessed according to the CES-D 10 International Scale. Logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between self-reported VI and depression. While adjusting for relevant covariates, the PROCESS macro (model nos. 6 and 91) was used to assess the chain-mediating effects of Internet use and social participation. Results A total of 17,433 respondents were included in this study. The CES-D 10 results showed that 7,327 middle-aged and older adults had depressive symptoms, of whom 39.5% were male and 10.2% were ≥75 years old. 32.1% of respondents self-reported VI. Regression analysis showed a positive association between VI and depression, while Internet use and social participation had a negative predictive effect on depression. In the mediation analysis, the social participation pathway contributed the most to the total effect, accounting for 52.69% of it. The proportion of Internet use is 37.72%. When these two mediators were considered together in the full model, they accounted for 9.58% of the total effect of VI on depression. Conclusion Internet use and social participation were important mediators that mitigated the effects of VI on depression. Combined with previous evidence, online activities such as e-health and m-health can effectively promote disease monitoring and diagnosis, and various offline social participation activities can also play a role in regulating emotions. Therefore, Internet use and social participation factors may serve as relevant entry points for the development of intervention programs that may further improve the mental health of the visually impaired.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Loneliness and social isolation are global public health challenges. Sensory impairments (SIs) are highly prevalent among older adults but are often ignored as a part of normal aging. Identifying the role of SIs in loneliness and social isolation could provide insight into strategies for improving public health among older adults. OBJECTIVE This study aims to analyze the effects of SIs on loneliness and social isolation among older adults in rural and urban China. METHODS This cohort study of 3069 older adults (aged 60+) used data from 4 waves (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a nationally representative survey of adults aged 45 years or older. SIs include hearing impairment (HI), vision impairment (VI), and dual sensory impairment (DSI). DSI is defined as the co-occurrence of VI and HI. Participants with complete data on hearing, vision, social isolation, and loneliness were included in the analysis. Generalized estimating equation models adjusted for covariates were used to examine the relationships of DSI with loneliness and social isolation among older adults. RESULTS Older adults in rural areas have higher prevalence of DSI, loneliness, and social isolation than their urban counterparts. In rural areas, participants with VI only (odds ratio [OR] 1.34, 95% CI 1.12-1.62; P=.002), HI only (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.02-1.71; P=.03), and DSI (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.56-2.18; P<.001) were more likely to experience loneliness compared with participants without SIs. DSI showed a statistically significant association with loneliness compared with VI only (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.22-1.54; P<.001) and HI only (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.13-1.72; P=.002). In urban areas, participants with VI only (OR 2.44, 95% CI 1.57-3.80; P<.001), HI only (OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.41-4.32; P=.002), and DSI (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.24-2.85; P=.003) were more likely to experience loneliness compared with participants without SIs. DSI was not associated with the increased likelihood of loneliness compared with HI only or VI only. SIs were not associated with social isolation among older adults in urban and rural areas. Until 2018, 86.97% (2669/3069) reported VI, but only 27.11% (832/3069) and 9.45% (290/3069) were treated with glasses and cataract surgery, respectively; besides, 75 individuals received both glasses and cataract surgery treatment. The prevalence of HI was 74.39% (2283/3069) in 2018, but only 0.72% (22/3069) were treated with a hearing aid. CONCLUSIONS SIs are associated with an increased risk of loneliness rather than social isolation. A compounded risk of DSI on loneliness exists in rural areas rather than in urban areas. These findings expand our knowledge about the effects of SIs on loneliness and social isolation in non-Western populations. Interventions targeting HI only and DSI might be particularly effective for mitigating loneliness of older adults in urban and rural areas, respectively. Considering the high prevalence and low treatment rate of SIs, measures should be taken to make treatment more accessible.

Abstract
This paper reports on how accessibility is being slowly implemented in the current editorial and production workflows of Australian educational publishers. The findings follow from an online questionnaire commissioned by the Australian Publishers Association completed by 65 educational publishers. The paper shows that many publishers have started working on accessibility implementation, but some of them are still at the scoping stage. While many of the participants believe that the quality of “born-accessible” publication is better for all users, they are concerned about the amount of work and financial cost involved. Overall, publishers understand the need for accessibility implementation, but require further practical support and training. Publishers are also interested in working out the best workflows, timing and processes, and most cost-effective way of implementing accessibility.

Abstract
The goal of this research was to assess the effects of virtual yoga on sleep and anxiety in persons with vision impairment. This study was a quasi-experimental single group design. Thirteen participants engaged in a six-week Hatha yoga experience with weekly sessions presented on a zoom platform with the recorded sessions provided to the participants after each session. Participants completed self-report assessments for sleep quality and anxiety, pre and post intervention. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests revealed significant improvements in both outcomes. Participants reported other positive outcomes from this experience, including opportunities for peer support, socialization, and the ability to exercise within the safety of their home environment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the relative strength of association between vision impairment (VI) and suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts among adults in the United States. METHOD The study sample consisted of 214,505 adults, aged 18 years and older. Researchers used data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in which respondents were asked whether they had any suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts, in the past 12 months. RESULTS Approximately, 4.4% of respondents reported experiencing VI, being blind, or having serious difficulty seeing. Compared to their sighted peers, a relatively high proportion of adults with VI had serious thoughts about suicide (9.0%), suicidal plans (3.0%), or suicidal attempts (1.6%) in the past year. The findings showed that individuals with VI may disproportionately experience suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts, after controlling potentially confounding variables (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.36; AOR = 1.27; AOR = 1.40, respectively). CONCLUSION With findings demonstrating such a strong association between VI and suicide, this study suggests the importance of screening for suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts among adults with VI, and the strong need for developing behavioral health services which keep this correlation in mind.

Abstract
Vision-impaired (VI) golf is a global para-sport currently played under several different classification systems under different bodies. This study aimed to gather expert opinion to determine whether the current classification systems are fit for the purpose intended and to identify any particular issues where VI impacts the game of golf for the disabled (G4D). A panel of 20 participants with expertise in G4D took part in a three-round Delphi study. The panel agreed that the current classification system(s) for VI golf did not or only partially fulfilled the aim to minimise the impact of VI on the outcome of competition and that there should be one, internationally recognised, classification system. It was agreed that other metrics of VI, in addition to the measurement of visual acuity (VA), need to be considered. Intentional misrepresentation of VI was identified as a cause for concern. The panel agreed that the current classification system does not fully achieve its purpose. Any changes that are made to these classification systems need to be evidence based specific to VI golf. Further research is required to determine how measures of VI affect golfing performance and whether other metrics other than VA are required.
