Impacts of regional socioeconomic statuses and global events on solid waste research reflected in six waste-focused journals

The research pertaining to solid waste is undergoing extensive advancement, thereby necessitating a consolidation and analysis of its research trajectories. The existing biblio-studies on solid waste research (SWR) lack thorough analyses of the factors influencing its trends. This article presents an innovative categorization framework that categorizes publications from six SWR journals utilizing Source Latent Dirichlet Allocation. First analyse changes in publication numbers across main categories, subcategories, journals, and regions, providing a macro-level study of SWR. Temporal analysis of keywords supplements a micro-level study of SWR, which highlights that emerging technologies with low Technology Readiness Level receive significant attention, while studies on widespread technologies are diminishing. Additionally, this study demonstrates the substantial influence of socioeconomic factors and previous SWR publications on current and future SWR trends. Finally, the article confirms the impact of global events on SWR trends by examining the structural breakpoints of SWR and their correlation with global events.

Occurrence, fate, and risk assessment of antibiotics in conventional and advanced drinking water treatment systems: From source to tap

The occurrence and removal of 38 antibiotics from nine classes in two drinking water treatment plants (WTPs) were monitored monthly over one year to evaluate the efficiency of typical treatment processes, track the source of antibiotics in tap water and assess their potential risks to ecosystem and human health. In both source waters, 18 antibiotics were detected at least once, with average total antibiotic concentrations of 538.5 ng/L in WTP1 and 569.3 ng/L in WTP2. The coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation, sand filtration and granular activated carbon processes demonstrated limited removal efficiencies. Chlorination, on the other hand, effectively eliminated antibiotics by 48.7 ± 11.9%. Interestingly, negative removal was observed along the distribution system, resulting in a significant antibiotic presence in tap water, with average concentrations of 131.5 ng/L in WTP1 and 362.8 ng/L in WTP2. Source tracking analysis indicates that most antibiotics in tap water may originate from distribution system. The presence of antibiotics in raw water and tap water posed risks to the aquatic ecosystem. Untreated or partially treated raw water could pose a medium risk to infants under six months. Water parameters, for example, temperature, total nitrogen and total organic carbon, can serve as indicators to estimate antibiotic occurrence and associated risks. Furthermore, machine learning models were developed that successfully predicted risk levels using water quality parameters. Our study provides valuable insights into the occurrence, removal and risk of antibiotics in urban WTPs, contributing to the broader understanding of antibiotic pollution in water treatment systems.

An evaluation of conventional and nature-based technologies for controlling antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes in wastewater treatment plants

Antibiotic resistance is a globally recognized health concern which leads to longer hospital stays, increased morbidity, increased mortality, and higher medical costs. Understanding how antibiotic resistance persists and exchanges in environmental systems like soil, water, and wastewater are critically important for understanding the emergence of pathogens with new resistance profiles and the subsequent exposure of people who indirectly/directly come in contact with these pathogens. There are concerns about the widespread application of prophylactic antibiotics in the clinical and agriculture sectors, as well as chemicals/detergents used in food and manufacturing industries, especially the quaternary ammonium compounds which have been found responsible for the generation of resistant genes in water and soil. The rates of horizontal gene transfer increase where there is a lack of proper water/wastewater infrastructure, high antibiotic manufacturing industries, or endpoint users - such as hospitals and intensive agriculture. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are often inefficient in the reduction of ARB/ARGs and provide the perfect combination of conditions for the development of antibiotic resistance. The wastewater discharged from municipal facilities may therefore be enriched with bacterial communities/pathogens and provide a suitable environment (due to the presence of nutrients and other pollutants) to enhance the transfer of antibiotic resistance. However, facilities with tertiary treatment (either traditional/emerging technologies) provide higher rates of reduction. This review provides a synthesis of the current understanding of wastewater treatment and antibiotic resistance, examining the drivers that may accelerate their possible transmission to a different environment, and highlighting the need for tertiary technologies used in treatment plants for the reduction of resistant bacteria/genes.

Phytosphere purification of urban domestic wastewater

Industrialization and overpopulation have polluted aquatic environments with significant impacts on human health and wildlife. The main pollutants in urban sewage are nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and organic pollutants, which need to be treated with sewage, and the use of aquatic plants to purify wastewater has high efficiency and low cost. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of phytoremediation are also affected by temperature, pH, microorganisms and other factors. The use of biochar can reduce the cost of wastewater purification, and the combination of biochar and nanotechnology can improve the efficiency of wastewater purification. Some aquatic plants can enrich pollutants in wastewater, so it can be considered to plant these aquatic plants in constructed wetlands to achieve the effect of purifying wastewater. Biochar treatment technology can purify wastewater with high efficiency and low cost, and can be further applied to constructed wetlands. In this paper, the latest research progress of various pollutants in wastewater purification by aquatic plants is reviewed, and the efficient treatment technology of wastewater by biochar is discussed. It provides theoretical basis for phytoremediation of urban sewage pollution in the future.

Occurrence, distribution, and potential ecological risks of antibiotics in a seasonal freeze-thaw basin

Antibiotics have gained increasing attention as pharmaceuticals widely existing in human society. Under low temperature conditions, antibiotics tend to have higher environmental persistence, which poses a potential threat to ecological environment, but research on antibiotics in low-temperature basins is still lacking. Therefore, for investigating occurrence, spatio-temporal distributions, and ecological risks of antibiotics in a seasonal freeze-thaw basin, rivers in Tumen River basin were selected and sampled, including 25 samples during the river-freezing season and 27 samples during the non-freezing season. Overall, climate characteristics of different latitudes and renewal frequency of antibiotics are important factors that lead to diversity of antibiotics in basins. Eleven target antibiotics were detected and their average concentrations during the river-freezing season (0.83-27.5 ng L-1) were lower than that during the non-freezing season (2.80-45.30 ng L-1), severely impacted by river flow, ice sealed-melting, and local feeding practices. In addition, total antibiotic concentrations are usually highest in downstream areas of human settlements, receiving input from husbandry and sewage, respectively. Through ecological risk assessment, norfloxacin and amoxicillin posed high risks to algae, which were identified as high-risk pollutants in basin.

Post-treatment disinfection technologies for sustainable removal of antibiotic residues and antimicrobial resistance bacteria from hospital wastewater

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified antimicrobial resistance bacteria and its spread as one of the most serious threats to public health and the environment in the twenty-first century. Different treatment scenarios are found in several countries, each with their own regulations and selection criteria for the effluent quality and management practices of hospital wastewater. To prevent the spread of disease outbreaks and other environmental threats, the development of sustainable treatment techniques that remove all antibiotics and antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genes should be required. Although few research based articles published focusing this issues, explaining the drawbacks and effectiveness of post-treatment disinfection strategies for eliminating antibiotic residues and antimicrobial resistance from hospital wastewater is the reason of this review. The application of conventional activated sludge (CAS) in large scale hospital wastewater treatments poses high energy supply needs for aeration, capital and operational costs. Membrane bioreactors (MBR) have also progressively replaced the CAS treatment systems and achieved better treatment potential, but membrane fouling, energy cost for aeration, and membrane permeability loss restrict their performance at large scale operations. In addition, the membrane process alone doesn't completely remove/degrade these micropollutants; as a substitute, the pollutants are being concentrated in a smaller volume, which requires further post-treatment. Therefore, these drawbacks should be solved by developing advanced techniques to be integrated into any of these or other secondary wastewater treatment systems, aiming for the effective removal of these micropollutants. The purpose of this paper is to review the performances of post-treatment disinfection technologies in the removal of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistant bacteria and their gens from hospital wastewater. The performance of advanced disinfection technologies (such as granular and powered activated carbon adsorption, ozonation, UV, disinfections, phytoremediation), and other integrated post-treatment techniques are primarily reviewed. Besides, the ecotoxicology and public health risks of hospital wastewater, and the development, spreading and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistant and the protection of one health are also highlighted.

Photodegradation of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment: Importance, factors and processes

Photochemical reactions widely occur in the aquatic environment and play fundamental roles in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, solar-induced photodegradation is efficient for many organic micropollutants (OMPs), especially those that cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation, and thus can mitigate chemical pollution. Recent reports indicate that photodegradation may play a more important role than biodegradation in many OMP transformations in the aquatic environment. Photodegradation can be influenced by the water matrix such as pH, inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The effect of the water matrix such as DOM on photodegradation is complex, and new insights concerning the disparate effects of DOM have recently been reported. In addition, the photodegradation process is also influenced by physical factors such as latitude, water depth, and temporal variations in sunlight as these factors determine the light conditions. However, it remains challenging to gain an overview of the importance of photodegradation in the aquatic environment because the reactions involved are diverse and complex. Therefore, this review provides a concise summary of the importance of photodegradation and the major processes related to the photodegradation of OMPs, with particular attention given to recent progress on the major reactions of DOM. In addition, major knowledge gaps in this field of environmental photochemistry are highlighted.

The Migration Rules of Malathion during Indoor Simulated Lake Freezing

The effect of malathion in ice is a poorly researched area, and ice is an important habitat for organisms at the base of the food web. This study presents laboratory-controlled experiments designed to investigate the migration rule of malathion during lake freezing. Concentrations of malathion were determined in samples of melted ice and in under-ice water. The effects of the initial sample concentration, freezing ratio, and freezing temperature on the distribution of malathion in the ice-water system were investigated. The concentration effect and migration capacity of malathion during freezing was characterized by the concentration rate and distribution coefficient. The results showed that the formation of ice led to the concentration of malathion appearing as follows: concentration in under-ice water > concentration in raw water > concentration in ice. This implied that malathion tended to migrate from the ice to the under-ice water during the freezing process. The increase in the initial malathion concentration, freezing ratio, and freezing temperature caused a more pronounced repulsion of the malathion by the ice and increased the migration to the under-ice water. When the solution of malathion with an initial concentration of 50 μg/L was frozen at -9 °C and the freezing ratio reached 60%, the concentration of malathion in the under-ice water was concentrated to 2.34 times the initial concentration. The migration of malathion to under-ice water during freezing may pose a potential threat to under-ice ecology; therefore, the environmental quality and impact of under-ice water in icebound lakes needs to be given more attention.

A comprehensive study of the source, occurrence, and spatio-seasonal dynamics of 12 target antibiotics and their potential risks in a cold semi-arid catchment

Antibiotics are widely consumed and are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, such as in agricultural and fishery lake catchments, for prophylactic treatment. However, there are very few comprehensive studies reporting all seasonal occurrences, spatiotemporal dynamics, and risk assessments of antibiotics in agricultural lake catchments, especially in cold regions during the winter season. This study measured seasonality in the concentrations of 12 antibiotics belonging to seven different classes in the surface waters (tributary rivers and lakes) of the Chagan lake catchment in northeast China. All antibiotics were detected in most of the water samples across most seasons, with concentrations varying for different compounds, locations, and seasons. These levels were discussed in terms of the main sources at different sampling sites, including agriculture, fish farming, municipal wastewater, and others. In general, the highest concentrations of most compounds were observed during the freeze-thaw periods. The number of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) correlated with compound lipophilicity and half-life. Based on the ecological risks of antibiotics and the relative abundance of ARGs, a hierarchical control priority list (HCPL) of antibiotics was determined, considering four levels (critical, high, medium, and low). To further strengthen the control and effectively manage antibiotics, we highly recommend the reduction and selective use of veterinary antibiotics in winter and spring during the freeze-thaw periods in the Chagan lake catchment.

Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Indonesia

This study provides the first set of quantitative data on the occurrence and fate of a wide range of contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in Indonesia's largest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP employs waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) as the secondary treatment before discharging the effluent to the Citarum River. Fourteen out of twenty-two monitored CECs were detected in the wastewater influent, and seven were present in the effluent, with a total concentration of 29.8 ± 0.4 µg/L and 0.5 ± 0.0 µg/L, respectively. The occurrence of the CECs in this study was found to be well correlated with their possible use and known detection in surface waters in Indonesia. Caffeine (CAF) at 12.2 ± 0.1 µg/L, acetaminophen (ACT) at 9.1 ± 0.1 µg/L, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) at 5.0 ± 0.1 µg/L, ibuprofen (IBU) at 2.3 ± 0.0 µg/L, and triclosan (TCS) at 470 ± 64 ng/L were discovered as the five most prevalent CECs, followed by bisphenol A (BPA), trimethoprim (TMP), Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), sulfamethazine (SMZ), carbamazepine (CBZ), fluoxetine (FLX), benzotriazole (BTA), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and metformin (METF). Biodegradable CECs (SMX, SMZ, ACT, IBU, TCS, BPA, CAF, DEET, and TMP) were efficiently removed (83-100%) by the WSP. In contrast, recalcitrant CECs achieved poor removal efficiencies (e.g., FLX at 24%), and for others, treatment processes even resulted in elevated concentrations in the effluent (CBZ by 85%, TCEP by 149%, and BTA by 92%). The CECs' influent concentrations were determined to pose a moderate aquatic cumulative risk, while no such risk was associated with their effluent concentrations. The study demonstrates the importance of conventional WWTPs in reducing the concentrations of CECs to minimize their aquatic contamination risk. The findings are relevant for countries, such as Indonesia, with limited resources for advanced centralized wastewater treatments, and which are exploring the efficacy of centralized WSP against the existing decentralized treatments.

Removal of emerging contaminants in conventional and advanced biological wastewater treatment plants in India-a comparison of treatment technologies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a growing concern for the environment and human health. The study investigates 20 commonly reported ECs in 10 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in urban to semi-urban settlements of north India over two years in the summer and winter. The selected plants were based on waste stabilization pond (WSP), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), activated sludge process (ASP), anoxic-aerobic process (AO), anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process, biodenipho process, sequencing batch reactor, and densadeg-biofor process. Of the 20 ECs, all 20 were identified in the influent and effluent, and 13 were identified in the final sludge on at least one occasion. The concentration in the influent, effluent, and sludge varied in the range from 2.5 ng/L to 77.4 μg/L, below limit of detection (LOD) to 1.984 μg/L, and < LOD to 1.41 μg/g, respectively. Acetaminophen and caffeine were predominately detected in the influent, whereas naproxen, ciprofloxacin, and carbamazepine were predominant in the effluent. The total removal in the plants was found in the range of 40.3-68.6%, mainly attributed to biodegradation/biotransformation. Removal of ECs by WWTPs, ranked by a relative removal criterion, followed the order: Biological nutrient removal based plants > WSP > UASB > densadeg-biofor > AO > ASP > combitreat-SBR. The risk assessment showed the risk to algae from antibiotics and triclosan, daphnia from triclosan, and fish from triclosan and hormones.

Artificial neural network based models for predicting the effluent quality of a combined upflow anaerobic sludge blanket and facultative pond: Performance evaluation and comparison of different algorithms

The main objective of this work was to test different artificial neural network (ANN) based models, i.e. the ANN feed forward back propagation (ANN-FFBP), deep feed forward backpropagation (DFFBP), and deep cascade forward back propagation (DCFBP) models, for predicting the effluent quality of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket-facultative pond (UASB-FP) system. The overall removal efficiency in the UASB-FP was >84% at organic loading rates of ∼26 kg d^-1. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonical nitrogen (AN), total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and total phosphorus (TP) were inputs to each model, while the water quality characteristics of the UASB-FP effluent was used as the output. The dataset of 180 samples, collected over a one-year period, was utilized to train, test, and validate the developed models. Compared to ANN-FFBP and DFFBP, the DCFBP network demonstrated the strongest capacity for prediction. The correlation coefficient R_Train and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) for the selected DCFBP model (3 hidden layers and 11 neurons/layer) in the training data set were 0.997 and 6.018, respectively. The sensitivity analysis of the DCFBP model shows that the model's performance is very sensitive to BOD followed by AN, COD, TP, TSS and TKN, respectively. The results of this study will be helpful to wastewater treatment (WWTP) plant managers in their pursuit of data-driven UASB-FP based WWTP management.

Removal of pharmaceutical active compounds in wastewater by constructed wetlands: Performance and mechanisms

The occurrence of pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) in aquatic environments is a cause for concern due to potential adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are cost-efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment systems for the removal of these PhACs. The removal processes and mechanisms comprise a complex interplay of photodegradation, biodegradation, phytoremediation, and sorption. This review synthesized the current knowledge on CWs for the removal of 20 widely detected PhACs in wastewater. In addition, the major removal mechanisms and influencing factors are discussed, enabling comprehensive and critical understanding for optimizing the removal of PhACs in CWs. Consequently, potential strategies for intensifying CWs system performance for PhACs removal are discussed. Overall, the results of this review showed that CWs performance in the elimination of some pharmaceuticals was on a par with conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and, for others, it was above par. Furthermore, the findings indicated that system design, operational, and environmental factors played important but highly variable roles in the removal of pharmaceuticals. Nonetheless, although CWs were proven to be a more cost-efficient and sustainable technology for pharmaceuticals removal than other engineered treatment systems, there were still several research gaps to be addressed, mainly including the fate of a broad range of emerging contaminants in CWs, identification of specific functional microorganisms, transformation pathways of specific pharmaceuticals, assessment of transformation products and the ecotoxicity evaluation of CWs effluents.

Emerging technologies for enhanced removal of residual antibiotics from source-separated urine and wastewaters: A review

Antibiotic residues are of significant concern in the ecosystem because of their capacity to mediate antibiotic resistance development among environmental microbes. This paper reviews recent technologies for the abatement of antibiotics from human urine and wastewaters. Antibiotics are widely distributed in the aquatic environment as a result of the discharge of municipal sewage. Their existence is a cause for worry due to the potential ecological impact (for instance, antibiotic resistance) on bacteria in the background. Numerous contaminants that enter wastewater treatment facilities and the aquatic environment, as a result, go undetected. Sludge can act as a medium for some chemicals to concentrate while being treated as wastewater. The most sewage sludge that has undergone treatment is spread on agricultural land without being properly checked for pollutants. The fate of antibiotic residues in soils is hence poorly understood. The idea of the Separation of urine at the source has recently been propagated as a measure to control the flow of pharmaceutical residues into centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). With the ever increasing acceptance of urine source separation practices, visibility and awareness on dedicated treatement technologies is needed. Human urine, as well as conventional WWTPs, are point sources of pharmaceutical micropollutants contributing to the ubiquitous detection of pharmaceutical residues in the receiving water bodies. Focused post-treatment of source-separated urine includes distillation and nitrification, ammonia stripping, and adsorption processes. Other reviewed methods include physical and biological treatment methods, advanced oxidation processes, and a host of combination treatment methods. All these are aimed at ensuring minimized risk products are returned to the environment.

Environmental performance of an integrated water supply and wastewater system through life cycle assessment - A Brazilian case study

The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental performance of an integrated water supply and wastewater system that employs a system of ponds at the wastewater treatment system. Additionally, this study aimed to understand the contribution of each stage of the system to the analyzed impact categories, and to evaluate alternative scenarios that consider the reduction of water losses in distribution, as well as the operation of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The evaluation was performed through life cycle assessment (LCA) that considered the stages of water withdrawal, treatment, and distribution along with wastewater collection and treatment. The system was modeled in the OpenLCA software using the Ecoinvent 3.7.1 database. Environmental impacts were assessed using the ReCiPe method and cumulative energy demand. The results show that the water withdrawal stage is the potential source of the greatest environmental impacts. There are exceptions in the categories of climate change and photochemical oxidant formation, which are most impacted by the WWTP. Analysis of alternative scenarios revealed that the decrease in water loss rates during distribution contribute to a linear reduction in potential environmental impacts of the analyzed categories. The operation of a UASB reactor in the WWTP leads to a reduction in impacts on the categories of climate change (41.4%) and formation of photochemical oxidants (11.6%), and to increases in impacts on the other categories analyzed. The data presented provide important information for the improvement of public policies aimed at sanitation in developing countries.

State-of-the-Art Review on the Application of Membrane Bioreactors for Molecular Micro-Contaminant Removal from Aquatic Environment

In recent years, the emergence of disparate micro-contaminants in aquatic environments such as water/wastewater sources has eventuated in serious concerns about humans’ health all over the world. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is considered a noteworthy membrane-based technology, and has been recently of great interest for the removal micro-contaminants. The prominent objective of this review paper is to provide a state-of-the-art review on the potential utilization of MBRs in the field of wastewater treatment and micro-contaminant removal from aquatic/non-aquatic environments. Moreover, the operational advantages of MBRs compared to other traditional technologies in removing disparate sorts of micro-contaminants are discussed to study the ways to increase the sustainability of a clean water supplement. Additionally, common types of micro-contaminants in water/wastewater sources are introduced and their potential detriments on humans’ well-being are presented to inform expert readers about the necessity of micro-contaminant removal. Eventually, operational challenges towards the industrial application of MBRs are presented and the authors discuss feasible future perspectives and suitable solutions to overcome these challenges.

Study from microcosms and mesocosms reveals Escherichia coli removal in high rate algae ponds during domestic wastewater treatment is primarily caused by dark decay

While high rate algal ponds (HRAPs) can provide efficient pathogen removal from wastewater, the mechanisms involved remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, the mechanisms potentially causing Escherichia coli (E. coli) removal during microalgae-based wastewater treatment were successively assessed using laboratory microcosms designed to isolate known mechanisms, and bench scale assays performed in real HRAP broth. During laboratory assays, E. coli decay was only significantly increased by alkaline pH (above temperature-dependent thresholds) due to pH induced toxicity, and direct sunlight exposure via UV-B damage and/or endogenous photo-oxidation. Bench assays confirmed alkaline pH toxicity caused significant decay but sunlight-mediated decay was not significant, likely due to light attenuation in the HRAP broth. Bench assays also evidenced the existence of uncharacterized ‘dark’ decay mechanism(s) not observed in laboratory microcosms. To numerically evaluate the contribution of each mechanism and the uncertainty associated, E. coli decay was modelled assuming dark decay, alkaline pH induced toxicity, and direct sunlight-mediated decay were independent mechanisms. The simulations confirmed E. coli decay was mainly caused by dark decay during bench assays (48.2–89.5% estimated contribution to overall decay at the 95% confidence level), followed by alkaline-pH induced toxicity (8.3–46.5%), and sunlight-mediated decay (0.0–21.9%).

Current solid waste management strategies and energy recovery in developing countries - State of art review

Solid waste generation has rapidly increased due to the worldwide population, urbanization, and industrialization. Solid waste management (SWM) is a significant challenge for a society that arises local issues with global consequences. Thus, solid waste management strategies to recycle waste products are promising practices that positively impact sustainable goals. Several developed countries possess excellent solid waste management strategies to recycle waste products. Developing countries face many challenges, such as municipal solid waste (MSW) sorting and handling due to high population density and economic instability. This mismanagement could further expedite harmful environmental and socioeconomic concerns. This review discusses the current solid waste management and energy recovery production in developing countries; with statistics, this review provides a comprehensive revision on energy recovery technologies such as the thermochemical and biochemical conversion of waste with economic considerations. Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges of SWM in developing countries, including several immediate actions and future policy recommendations for improving the current status of SWM via harnessing technology. This review has the potential of helping municipalities, government authorities, researchers, and stakeholders working on MSW management to make effective decisions for improved SWM for achieving sustainable development.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments and their removal by algae-based systems

The consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has been widely increasing, yet up to 90-95% of PPCPs consumed by human are excreted unmetabolized. Moreover, the most of PPCPs cannot be fully removed by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which release PPCPs to natural water bodies, affecting aquatic ecosystems and potentially humans. This study sought to review the occurrence of PPCPs in natural water bodies globally, and assess the effects of important factors on the fluxes of pollutants into receiving waterways. The highest ibuprofen concentration (3738 ng/L) in tap water was reported in Nigeria, and the highest naproxen concentration (37,700 ng/L) was reported in groundwater wells in Penn State, USA. Moreover, the PPCPs have affected aquatic organisms such as fish. For instance, up to 24.4 × 10³ ng/g of atenolol was detected in P. lineatus. Amongst different technologies to eliminate PPCPs, algae-based systems are environmentally friendly and effective because of the photosynthetic ability of algae to absorb CO₂ and their flexibility to grow in different wastewater. Up to 99% of triclosan and less than 10% of trimethoprim were removed by Nannochloris sp., green algae. Moreover, variable concentrations of PPCPs might adversely affect the growth and production of algae. The exposure of algae to high concentrations of PPCPs can reduce the content of chlorophyll and protein due to producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), and affecting expression of some genes in chlorophyll (rbcL, psbA, psaB and psbc).

Achieving Electrochemical-Sustainable-Based Solutions for Monitoring and Treating Hydroxychloroquine in Real Water Matrix

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has been extensively consumed due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, it is increasingly found in different water matrices. For this reason, the concentration of HCQ in water should be monitored and the treatment of contaminated water matrices with HCQ is a key issue to overcome immediately. Thus, in this study, the development of technologies and smart water solutions to reach the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) is the main objective. To do that, the integration of electrochemical technologies for their environmental application on HCQ detection, quantification and degradation was performed. Firstly, an electrochemical cork-graphite sensor was prepared to identify/quantify HCQ in river water matrices by differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) method. Subsequently, an HCQ-polluted river water sample was electrochemically treated with BDD electrode by applying 15, 30 and 45 mA cm−2. The HCQ decay and organic matter removal was monitored by DPV with composite sensor and chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements, respectively. Results clearly confirmed that, on the one hand, the cork-graphite sensor exhibited good current response to quantify of HCQ in the river water matrix, with limit of detection and quantification of 1.46 mg L−1 (≈3.36 µM) and 4.42 mg L−1 (≈10.19 µM), respectively. On the other hand, the electrochemical oxidation (EO) efficiently removed HCQ from real river water sample using BDD electrodes. Complete HCQ removal was achieved at all applied current densities; whereas in terms of COD, significant removals (68%, 71% and 84% at 15, 30 and 45 mA cm−2, respectively) were achieved. Based on the achieved results, the offline integration of electrochemical SDG6 technologies in order to monitor and remove HCQ is an efficient and effective strategy.

Micropollutant transformation and toxicity: Electrochemical ozonation versus biological metabolism

Environmental water sources are constantly polluted by anthropogenic compounds, not always minimized by conventional water treatment methods to remove these compounds at the micro- and nano-range. The absolute concentrations of a suite of seven representative environmental micropollutants were compared pre- and post-treatment with both ozone and microbial biofilms, in terms of removal efficiencies and toxicity assays. Both synthetic micropollutant mixes and environmental water samples were evaluated. The study started with two representative micropollutants (carbamazepine, CBZ, and sulfamethoxazole, SMX), and broadened into a suite of pollutants, evaluating whole-sample eco-toxicological footprints. An ozone concentration of 4.24 ± 0.27 mg/L in tap water, resulted in an 87.9% and 96.5% removal of CBZ and SMX, respectively, within 1 min. Despite almost immediate removal of parent micropollutants by oxidation, endocrine disruption potential (anti-estrogenicity) of CBZ and SMX required up to 240 min of ozone treatment to show no assay effect. A broader suite of micropollutants in more complex environmental matrices showed scavenging of ozone (2.95 ± 0.17–0.25 ± 0.03 mg/L) and varying micropollutant recalcitrance to oxidation. Lower matrix pollution led to lower reduction in eco-toxicity. Microbial degradation of CBZ and SMX (56% and 70% versus 19% and 79%, respectively, in duplicate biofilms) by nutrient-limited biofilms showed less removal than ozonation, with marked variation due to the stochastic nature of biofilm sloughing. Microbial degradation of CBZ and SMX resulted in an increase of >90% in both estrogenicity and Aliivibrio inhibition. The results obtained from this study address a gap in understanding the removal efficiency of micropollutants, where the removal process often receives more attention than the comparative reduction of toxicological effects. This shift from a controlled laboratory environment to real-world scenarios also provided comparative insights into the removal of micropollutants and the eco-toxicity of the transformation by-products of each process.

Biodegradation mechanism of chloramphenicol by Aeromonas media SZW3 and genome analysis

The overuse of chloramphenicol (CAP) due to its low price is detrimental to ecological safety and human health. An earthworm gut content dwelling bacterium, Aeromonas media SZW3, was isolated with capability of CAP biodegradation, and the CAP degradation efficiency reached 55.86% at day 1 and 67.28% at day 6. CAP biodegradation kinetics and characteristic of strain SZW3 determined the factors that affect CAP biodegradation. Thirteen possible biodegradation products were identified, including three novel biodegradation products (CP1, CP2 and CP3), and three potential biodegradation pathway were proposed. Biodegradation reactions include amide bond hydrolysis, nitro group reduction, acetylation, aminoacetylation, dechlorination and oxidation. Genome analysis suggested that the coding gene of RarD (CAP resistance permease), CAP O-acetyltransferase, nitroreductase and haloalkane dehalogenase may be responsible for CAP biodegradation. The proposed complete biodegradation pathway and genome analysis by strain SZW3 provide us new insight of the transformation route and fate of CAP in the environment.

Upgrading of waste stabilization ponds using a low-cost small-scale fine bubble diffused aeration system

Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSPs) are known for the economical treatment of wastewater, especially if low-cost land is available. In this research to overcome some common operational problems such as undesirable color changes in ponds, severe odor problems, and most importantly, deviations from the effluent standards, the performance of a novel installation of a small-scale fine bubble diffused aeration system in the inlet zone of the facultative pond has been investigated. The long-term operational data of the system in two wastewater treatment plants in the east of Iran demonstrated that this system can significantly improve the efficiency of the treatment plant in addition to eliminating the mentioned operational problems. Pre-aeration of the inlet zone of the facultative ponds (Birjand WSPs) by the aeration system consists of 250 fine bubble disk diffusers (12 inches in diameter) and one 22 kW roots blower showed that purple color and odor problem can eliminate after almost two weeks and organic matter removal efficiency increased from 58 ± 15% to about 85 ± 10% based on BOD₅. Almost similar results were obtained from the WSPs of Neyshabur. Long-term experimental results showed this system can be used successfully to control the process and upgrade these natural and efficient treatment processes, especially in developing countries.

Occurrence of pesticides and their transformation products in headwater streams: Contamination status and effect of ponds on contaminant concentrations

In France, more than 90% of monitored watercourses are contaminated with pesticides. This high contamination level increases at the head of agricultural watersheds, where dilution capacities are low and transport from treated lands is direct. Ponds, numerous around headwater streams, could provide additional protection against pesticide pollution. Because of their long hydraulic residence time and large water volumes, they mitigate pesticide concentrations between upstream and downstream rivers. However, pesticide transformation products may also be responsible for the degradation of environments, owing to their presence at high concentrations and their persistence, but related data are scarce, particularly because of their high level of molecular diversity. We first reported on the state of water contamination in agricultural headwater streams, based on high frequency water sampling. Analysis of 67 molecules (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) showed pesticides and pesticide transformation product mixtures of up to 29 different compounds in one sample. Regardless of the sampling location, transformation products represented at least 50% of the detected compounds. Then, we demonstrated the capacity of a pond to reduce contaminant concentrations in downstream rivers for 90% of the detected compounds. Upstream from this pond, environmental quality or ecotoxicological standards were exceeded during sampling, with pesticide and transformation product sum concentrations of up to 27 μg/L. Downstream from the study pond, few exceedances were observed, with a maximum total concentration of 2.2 μg/L, reflecting significant water quality improvement.

Performance of full scale constructed wetlands in removing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes

Additional treatment of wastewater, such as constructed wetlands (CWs), is a possible solution to reduce the discharge of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from households and industry to the environment. This study aims to investigate the occurrence and removal of antibiotics and ARGs by two full scale CWs operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT), namely 1 day and 3 days. Both CWs were receiving the same wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. Temporally and spatially distributed sampling of water and sediment was conducted for one year and samples were analyzed for antibiotics and ARGs by using LC-MS/MS and qPCR. Results showed that both CWs removed antibiotics significantly with a comparable overall removal of 28%-100%, depending on the type of antibiotics. However, some of the antibiotics showed higher concentration after the CW treatment. Five antibiotics (tiamulin, tylosin, oxytetracycline, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) were the most abundant (>1500 ng/l on average) in winter. Meanwhile, ermB was the most abundant (average of 5.0 log) in winter compared to summer (average of 3.5 log). Other ARGs did not show a significant increase or decrease between winter and summer. ARGs were removed from the wastewater by 0.8 to 1.5 log. The HRT did not influence the removal of either the antibiotics or the ARGs. A strong correlation was found between sul genes and intI1. The results also revealed a positive and a negative relationship from sampling point 1 to sampling point 5: a positive relation between abundance of antibiotics, ARGs, and of NO₃-N, NH₄-N, TP, COD and a negative relation between antibiotics, ARGs and temperature. This relationship showed the effect between antibiotics and ARGs concentrations with physicochemical parameters and nutrients. The ability of CWs to reduce the input of micropollutants into the environment makes CWs a potential post treatment to WWTP.

A Framework for Addressing Circularity Challenges in Cities with Nature-Based Solutions

A novel framework is presented that aims to guide practitioners and decision makers toward a better understanding of the role of nature-based solutions (NBS) in the enhancement of resources management in cities, and the mainstreaming of NBS in the urban fabric. Existing frameworks describing the use of NBS to address urban challenges do not specifically consider circularity challenges. Thus, the new framework provides the following: (1) a comprehensive set of Urban Circularity Challenges (UCCs); (2) a set of more than fifty NBS units and NBS interventions thoroughly assessed in terms of their potential to address UCCs; and (3) an analysis of input and output resource streams, which are both required for and produced during operation of NBS. The new framework aims to facilitate the coupling of individual NBS units and NBS interventions with NBS that enable circular economy solutions.

A critical review on environmental presence of pharmaceutical drugs tested for the covid-19 treatment

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The outbreak caused a worldwide impact, becoming a health threat to the general population and its professionals. To date, there are no specific antiviral treatments or vaccines for the COVID-19 infection, however, some drugs are being clinically tested. The use of these drugs on large scale raises great concern about their imminent environmental risk, since the elimination of these compounds by feces and urine associated with the inefficiency of sewage treatment plants in their removal can result in their persistence in the environment, putting in risk the health of humans and of other species. Thus, the goal of this work was to conduct a review of other studies that evaluated the presence of the drugs chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, ivermectin, dexamethasone, remdesivir, favipiravir and some HIV antivirals in the environment. The research indicated the presence of these drugs in the environment in different regions, with concentration data that could serve as a basis for further comparative studies following the pandemic.

Comparison of advanced biological treatment and nature-based solutions for the treatment of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs): A comprehensive study for wastewater and sewage sludge

Passing of pharmaceutical residues into environment in an uncontrolled manner as a result of continuous increase in drug consumption across the globe has become a threatening problem for the ecosystems and almost all living creatures. In this study, diclofenac (DCF), carbamazepine (CBZ), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) belonging to different therapeutic classes were investigated simultaneously in advanced biological treatment and nature-based treatments during 12-months sampling campaign. In this context, behavior patterns of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) throughout the both wastewater and sludge lines in advanced biological wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), wastewater stabilization pond (WSP) and constructed wetland (CW) were discussed in detail based on each treatment processes seasonally. Furthermore, statistically evaluated data obtained in full-scale WWTPs were compared with each other in order to determine the valid removal mechanisms of these pharmaceutical compounds. While DCF and CBZ were detected very intensively both in the wastewater and sludge lines of the investigated WWTPs, steroid hormones,17β-E2 and EE2, were determined below the LOQ value in general. Annual average removal efficiencies achieved in studied WWTPs for DCF ranged between -23.3% (in CW) and 75.2% (in WSP), while annual average removal rates obtained for CBZ varied between -20.7% (in advanced biological treatment) and 10.0% (in CW). It has been found that DCF was highly affected by different wastewater treatment processes applied in the WWTPs compared to CBZ which showed extraordinary resistance to all different treatment processes. Although calculated in different rates for each compounds, biodegradation/biotransformation and sorption onto sewage sludge were determined as the main removal mechanisms for PhACs in plants. Although showed a similar behavior in the sludge dewatering unit (decanter) present in the advanced biological WWTP, quite different behaviors observed in the anaerobic digester for DCF (up to 15% decrease) and CBZ (up to 95% increase). Sorption and desorption behaviors of DCF and CBZ were also evaluated in the sludge treatment processes found in advanced biological WWTP. Percentages of originated extra annual average of pharmaceutical loads were calculated as 0.64% and 0.90% for DCF and CBZ, respectively in the advanced biological WWTP due to the sidestream caused by the sludge dewatering unit.

Effect of turbulence, dispersion, and stratification on Escherichia coli disinfection in a subtropical maturation pond

Sunlight disinfection is important for treatment of wastewater within maturation ponds. This study analyses the movement of Escherichi coli within a slice of a maturation pond, being affected by stratification, sunlight attenuation and mixing driven by wind shear and natural convection using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Since the exposure to ultraviolet light is most effective in the near-surface region of the pond, natural convective mixing mechanisms to transport the pathogens from the lower parts of the pond are critical for disinfection efficacy. Different turbulence models are considered for closure of the momentum conservation equations and compared with a laminar flow simulation and a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) model. The effect of turbulence and stratification is shown to be significant for thermal and velocity distributions, and predictions of E. coli die-off. Greater volume-averaged E. coli die-off was predicted by the computationally convenient CSTR model than the CFD turbulence and laminar models. The simulation results are compared with experimental data and show that complete vertical mixing occurs in a diurnal pattern aiding die-off in sunlight-attenuating water. Practical applications of the model can assist in management strategies for maturation ponds such as off-take locations/times and evaluating seasonal variations in sunlight disinfection.

Photolytic fate of (E)- and (Z)-endoxifen in water and treated wastewater exposed to sunlight

Endoxifen is the main active metabolite of a common cytostatic drug, tamoxifen. Endoxifen has been recently detected in the final effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plants. The antiestrogenic activity of endoxifen could bring negative effects to aquatic life if released to the water environment. This study elucidated the fate and susceptibility of (E)- and (Z)-endoxifen (2 μg mL^-1, 1:1 wt ratio between the two easily interchangeable isomers) in wastewater and receiving surface water to sunlight. Phototransformation by-products (PBPs) and their toxicity were determined. Sunlight reduced at least 83% of endoxifen concentration in wastewater samples, whereas in surface water samples, 60% of endoxifen was photodegraded after 180 min of the irradiation. In ultrapure water samples spiked with endoxifen, PBPs were mainly generated via con-rotatory 6π-photocyclization, followed by oxidative aromatization. These PBPs underwent secondary reactions leading to a series of PBPs with different molecular weights. Eight PBPs were identified and the toxicity analysis via the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool revealed that seven of these PBPs are more toxic than endoxifen itself. This is likely due to the formation of poly-aromatic core in the PBPs due to exposure to sunlight. Therefore, highly toxic PBPs may be generated if endoxifen is present in water and wastewater exposed to sunlight. The presence, fates and activities of these PBPs in surface water especially at locations close to treated wastewater discharge points should be investigated.

Recent Advances in the Rejection of Endocrine-Disrupting Compounds from Water Using Membrane and Membrane Bioreactor Technologies: A Review

Water is a critical resource necessary for life to be sustained, and its availability should be secured, appropriated, and easily obtainable. The continual detection of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) (ng/L or µg/L) in water and wastewater has attracted critical concerns among the regulatory authorities and general public, due to its associated public health, ecological risks, and a threat to global water quality. Presently, there is a lack of stringent discharge standards regulating the emerging multiclass contaminants to obviate its possible undesirable impacts. The conventional treatment processes have reportedly ineffectual in eliminating the persistent EDCs pollutants, necessitating the researchers to develop alternative treatment methods. Occurrences of the EDCs and the attributed effects on humans and the environment are adequately reviewed. It indicated that comprehensive information on the recent advances in the rejection of EDCs via a novel membrane and membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment techniques are still lacking. This paper critically studies and reports on recent advances in the membrane and MBR treatment methods for removing EDCs, fouling challenges, and its mitigation strategies. The removal mechanisms and the operating factors influencing the EDCs remediation were also examined. Membranes and MBR approaches have proven successful and viable to eliminate various EDCs contaminants.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals in a seasonally ice-sealed river: From ice formation to melting

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 21 pharmaceuticals in the Jilin Songhua River were investigated during its freeze-thaw periods, including ice formation, sealed, and breakup. Florfenicol was the most abundant pharmaceutical, with mean concentrations of 123.4 ± 61.1 ng L^-1 in water and 73.8 ± 66.3 ng kg^-1 in ice. Sulfadiazine occurred at a higher mean concentration in downstream areas (45.6 ± 7.4 ng L^-1) than in upstream areas (0.7 ± 0.7 ng L^-1). Most pharmaceuticals appeared in relatively high concentrations in water during the ice-breakup period. Complex factors including pharmaceutical usage patterns, ice-regulated photodegradation, biodegradation, water flow, and freeze-concentration effects, as well as the release of pharmaceuticals from ice, were responsible for the temporal variation of pharmaceuticals. Pseudo-ice/water distribution coefficients showed the distribution of pharmaceuticals in ice and demonstrated the effects of their release from the ice on their temporal variations. Most pharmaceuticals posed a risk to algae; of these, amoxicillin exhibited the highest risk. In addition, thawing increased the concentration of thiamphenicol in water, which elevated its ecological risk level. The findings suggest that the pharmaceuticals retained in ice should be considered with regard to regulating pharmaceuticals' temporal variations in seasonal ice-covered rivers during the freeze-thaw process.

Removal of hazardous substances in municipal wastewater treatment plants

Chemical pollution poses a threat to the aquatic environment and to human health. Wastewater treatment plants are the last defensive line between the aquatic environment and emissions of pollutants. This study focuses on identification of most relevant hazardous substances in Estonian municipal wastewater and their fate in the treatment process. During this study, seasonal wastewater and sewage sludge samples were collected from nine municipal wastewater treatment plants and analyzed for 282 hazardous substances, including EU (n = 45) and Estonian (n = 31) priority substances. Results of this study show that several substances that are subject to international restrictions (e.g. Stockholm Convention) are still present in untreated sewage. Wastewater treatment systems that had a greater level of complexity (TEC >5) were more successful in removing hazardous substances. Statistical analyses showed that removal efficiency of organic hazardous substances had significant (p-value <0.05) linear correlation with removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS), but a monotonic relationship with operators' competency. This study showed that operators' competency had a strong influence on the stability of the wastewater treatment efficiency and removal of organic hazardous substances.

Partition and Fate of Phthalate Acid Esters (PAEs) in a Full-Scale Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetland Treating Polluted River Water

When used as highly produced chemicals and widely used plasticizers, Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) have potential risks to human life and the environment. In this study, to assess the distribution and fate of PAEs, specifically inside a full-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland, four PAEs including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were investigated. In effluent, PAEs concentration decreased 19.32% (DMP), 19.18% (DEP), 19.40% (DBP), and 48.56% (DEHP), respectively. Within the wetland, PAEs partitioned in water (0.18–1.12 μg/L, 35.38–64.92%), soil (0.44–5.08 μg/g, 1.02–31.33%), plant (0.68–48.6 μg/g, 0.85–36.54%), air and biological transformation (2.72–33.21%). The results indicated that soil and plant adsorption contributed to the majority of PAE removal, digesting DMP (19.32%), DEP (19.18%), DBP (19.40%), and DEHP (48.56%) in constructed wetlands. Moreover, the adsorption was affected by both octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow) and transpiration stream concentration factors (TSCF). This work, for the first time, revealed the partition and fate of PAEs in constructed wetlands to the best of our knowledge.

Pharmaceutical and personal care product residues in a macrophyte pond-constructed wetland treating wastewater from a university campus: Presence, removal and ecological risk assessment

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) constitute a group of chemicals of concern because of their potential toxicity when reaching aquatic environments. Wastewaters are one of the main pathways of introduction into the environment of the chemical compounds used in PPCPs because, in most cases, wastewater treatment facilities are not 100% efficient in their removal. This problem is accentuated in rural zones and isolated communities where conventional treatment systems are too expensive to build and operate. Waste-stabilization ponds and constructed wetlands (CWs) are natural wastewater treatment systems which are used to improve the quality of sewage from small communities because of their low cost and easy maintenance. There is growing interest in combining the two technologies to make a more robust system, taking into account their respective strengths and weaknesses. In this work, a combined macrophyte pond-CW system was evaluated for the presence at three sampling points (influent, pond effluent and CW effluent) of fifteen steroid hormones and six benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVSs). None of the targeted BUVS compounds were detected in either the influent or effluent, probably because of the particular characteristics of the population served by the wastewater system. In contrast, eight different steroid hormone compounds were detected at concentrations ranging from 17.3 to 247.7 ng·L^-1 in influent samples and from 8.1 to 22.1 ng·L^-1 in final effluent samples. The pond-CW system showed high elimination rates of steroid hormone residues with average removal efficiencies of over 77%. This efficacy was confirmed in the ecological risk assessment evaluation that was performed. Final effluents showed a low ecological risk associated with steroid hormones in contrast to the medium-high ecological risks found in the influent samples.

Occurrence and treatment of contaminants of emerging concern in the African aquatic environment: Literature review and a look ahead

Awareness about the rising detection and reported (eco)toxicological effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs, e.g. pharmaceuticals and personal care products - PPCPs - and modern pesticides) in the aquatic environment is growing. CECs are increasingly reported in the African aquatic environment, although the amount of data available is still limited. In this work, a comprehensive review is presented on the occurrence of CECs in wastewater, sludge, surface water, sediment, groundwater and drinking water of Africa. Further attention is given to the performance of wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs) and trickling filters (TF) with respect to CECs removal. For the first time, we also look at the state of knowledge on the performance of point-of-use technologies (POUs) regarding the removal of CECs in drinking water. Generally, CECs in Africa occur at the same order of magnitude as in the Western world. However, for particular groups of compounds and at specific locations such as informal settlements, clearly higher concentrations are reported in Africa. Whereas antiretroviral and antimalarial drugs are rarely detected in the Western world, occurrence patterns in Africa reveal concentrations up to >100 μg L^-1. Removal efficiencies of WSPs and TFs focus mainly on PPCPs and vary significantly, ranging from no removal (e.g. carbamazepine) to better than 99.9% (e.g. paracetamol). Despite the rising adoption of POUs, limited but promising information is available on their performance regarding CECs treatment in drinking water, particularly for the low-cost devices (e.g. ceramic filters and solar disinfection - SODIS) being adopted in Africa and other developing countries.

Superposition effect of floating and fixed beds in series for enhancing nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a multistage pond system

In order to improve the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a multistage pond system which receives polluted natural inflow and outflows to a landscape lake, ecological floating beds (EFBs) were installed along the flow-path of each pond and fixed beds (FBs) were embedded in between each pair of ponds. Such a simple modification of the MPS effectively enhanced the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate from 59.2% to 71.4% and the total phosphorus (TP) removal rate from 37.1% to 51.0%. It was identified that the EFBs mainly contributed to enhanced TN removal by the biomass growth in the stereo-elastic packing and attachment on the surface of ceramsite particles packed in the floating mat, while the FB filled with zeolites contributed to both TP adsorption and biological TN removal to certain extent, as indicated by the denitrification rate and adsorption function experimentally obtained for each part of the bed settings. The superposition effect of the installation of EFBs and FBs was estimated using a tank-in-series model. With a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency higher than 0.75, calculation results of the model well fitted field measurements and showed that the EFBs (including plant uptake) contributed to the increase of TN and TP removal by 23.3% and 8.12%, respectively, and that contributed by FBs were 19.6% and 10.7%, respectively.

Fluorescence Excitation-Emission Spectroscopy: An Analytical Technique to Monitor Drugs of Addiction in Wastewater

Emerging contaminants of concern have become a serious issue for the scientific community and society more broadly in recent years due to their increasingly widespread environmental distribution and largely unknown environmental and human health impacts. This study aimed to explore the use of fluorescence excitation-emission (F-EEM) spectroscopy as an alternative analytical method to evaluate the presence of key drugs of addiction (benzoylecgonine, methamphetamine, MDMA, codeine and morphine) in wastewater treatment plants. The chemicals of interest from wastewater were extracted by mixed-mode solid phase extraction and quantified using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The same wastewater samples were also analysed by a fluorescence spectrophotometer for fluorescence spectra at wavelengths 280–600 nm (emission) and 200–600 nm (excitation). The study also investigated the relevance of different methods for interpreting F-EEM matrices data including parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modelling and fluorescence regional integration technique. PARAFAC identified four components, and among them, component C2, identified at the λex/λem = 275/340 nm wavelength associated with proteinaceous compounds most likely related to tryptophan amino acid, showed significant correlation with codeine removal. MDMA and morphine were not correlated to any of the fluorescence regions. The fluorescence regions related to aromatic protein-like fluorescence were correlated significantly with drug concentration and so may offer a suitable alternative approach for monitoring drugs including benzoylecgonine, methamphetamine and codeine.

Applying analytical decision methods for determination of the best treatment alternative to remove emerging micropollutants from drinking water and wastewater: triclosan example

Increasing human activities have not only substantially altered the natural material cycle but also created new synthetic chemicals flows. Some of these chemicals, which are described as micropollutants (MPs), may result in adverse effects on human health, aquatic organisms, and ecosystems. MPs can be transported to the environment and water resources in a variety ways including domestic and industrial wastewater. Unfortunately, most MPs are only partially removed in existing conventional treatment plants. Therefore, conventional treatment plants should be modernized by advanced treatment technologies to protect the environment and human health. However, there are various mysteries about best treatment techniques, evaluation criteria, and decision-making methods. In this study, it was aimed to determine the best treatment alternatives for triclosan (TCS) which is one of the priority MPs. A total of 18 evaluation criteria were identified and prioritized by employing analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy methods. Treatment alternatives were identified and their performance was assessed through a comprehensive literature investigation. In decision-making processes of determining these alternatives, "technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS)," "preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE)," and "Višekriterijumsko kompromisno rangiranje (VIKOR)" analytical decision-making methods were employed, and priority rankings were determined according to each decision method. The final priority ranking was found as adsorption > membrane filtration > hybrid processes > advanced oxidation processes > constructed wetlands > conventional treatment processes > biological treatment > other treatment processes. Although the obtained results are specific to TCS, the employed analytical decision methods can be also used to decide the best treatment alternatives for other MPs.

Solvent effect on endosulfan adsorption onto polymeric arginine-methacrylate cryogels

Endosulfan is a persistent insecticide that is still used in some countries even though it is life-threatening and banned in the agricultural struggle. The solubility of pesticides in water is negligible. It is known that pesticides with better solubility in organic solvents have different solubility when the dielectric constants of these solvents are taken into account. The polymeric structure of arginine was modified with methacrylate to be a functional monomer, and it was immobilized on a solid support, poly(HEMA), and finally, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-arginine methacrylate) was obtained and used as an effective adsorbent. The effect of organic solvents on endosulfan adsorption was investigated for the first time in the literature. Endosulfan was removed from alcohol media by using this polymeric structure synthesized by exploiting alcoho-phobic interaction in this work. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), elemental analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods were used for the structural characterization and therefore to prove successful synthesis of cryogels. Morphological characteristics were also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an N₂ adsorption method, and swelling test. Adsorption experiments were carried out against varying interaction time and concentration parameters in the batch system. Since the alcohol used as a solvent has a pH value close to the ionic strength of drinking water, no change was made in the pH of the solution. Endosulfan molecules dissolved in solvents such as toluene, dichloromethane, acetone, and chloroform were removed using poly(HEMA-ArMA) cryogels to determine the solvent effect on the adsorption of endosulfan. As expected, the removal of endosulfan from the solvent toluene provided the best result. Although the adsorption in toluene is almost 9.5 times higher than that in ethanol, the use of toluene in the adsorption process due to its chemical structure is not feasible. Thus, experiments were carried out in ethanol.
