Water treatment residual: A critical review of its applications on pollutant removal from stormwater runoff and future perspectives

Meta-analysis review for pilot and large-scale constructed wetlands: Design parameters, treatment performance, and influencing factors

Despite their longstanding use in environmental remediation, constructed wetlands (CWs) are still topical due to their sustainable and nature-based approach. While research and review publications have grown annually by 7.5 % and 37.6 %, respectively, from 2018 to 2022, a quantitative meta-analysis employing advanced statistics and machine learning to assess CWs has not yet been conducted. Further, traditional statistics of mean ± standard deviation could not convey the extent of confidence or uncertainty in results from CW studies. This study employed a 95 % bootstrap-based confidence interval and out-of-bag Random Forest-based driver analysis on data from 55 studies, totaling 163 cases of pilot and full-scale CWs. The study recommends, with 95 % confidence, median surface hydraulic loading rates (HLR) of 0.14 [0.11, 0.17] m/d for vertical flow-CWs (VF) and 0.13 [0.07, 0.22] m/d for horizontal flow-CWs (HF), and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 125.14 [48.0, 189.6] h for VF, 72.00 [42.00, 86.28] h for HF, as practical for new CW design. Permutation importance results indicate influent COD impacted primarily on COD removal rate at 21.58 %, followed by HLR (16.03 %), HRT (12.12 %), and substrate height (H) (10.90 %). For TN treatment, influent TN and COD were the most significant contributors at 12.89 % and 10.01 %, respectively, while H (9.76 %), HRT (9.72 %), and HLR (5.87 %) had lower impacts. Surprisingly, while HRT and H had a limited effect on COD removal, they substantially influenced TN. This study sheds light on CWs' performance, design, and control factors, guiding their operation and optimization.

New optimization strategies for SWMM modeling of stormwater quality applications in urban area

Build-up/wash-off models were originally developed for small-scale laboratory facilities with uniform properties. The effective translation of these models to catchment scale necessitates the meticulous calibration of model parameters. The present study combines the Mat-SWMM tool with a genetic algorithm (GA) to improve the calibration of build-up and wash-off parameters. For this purpose, Mat-SWMM was modified to equip it with the capacity to provide comprehensive water quality analysis outcomes. Additionally, this research also conducts a comparative examination of two distinct types of objective functions in the optimization. Rather than depending on previous literature, this study undertook a numerical campaign to ascertain an appropriate range for the relevant parameters within the case study, thereby ensuring the optimization algorithm's efficient functionality. This research also implements an integrated event calibration approach, i.e., a novel method that calibrates all rainfall events collectively, thus improving systemic interaction representation and model robustness. The findings indicate that employing this methodology significantly enhances the reliability of the outcomes, thereby establishing a more robust procedure. The first objective function (TSS instantaneous less squared difference function, OF 1), which is widely employed in the literature, was designed to minimize the difference between observed and predicted instantaneous Total Suspended Solids (TSS) concentrations. In contrast, the second function (mass and mass peak consistency function, OF 2) considers integral model outputs, i.e., the overall mass balance, the time of the peak mass flow rate, and its intensity. The analysis of the outputs revealed that both objective functions demonstrated sufficient performance. OF 1 provided slightly better performance in predicting the TSS concentrations, whereas OF 2 demonstrated superior ability in capturing global event characteristics. Notably, the optimal parameter set identified through OF 2 aligned with the physically plausible ranges traditionally recommended in technical manuals for urban catchments. In contrast, OF 1's optimal set necessitated an expansion in the acceptable parameter ranges. Finally, from a computational burden viewpoint, OF 1 demanded a significantly higher number of function evaluations, thus implying an escalating computational cost as the range expands. Conversely, OF 2 necessitated fewer evaluations to converge toward the optimal solution.

High efficiency of drinking water treatment residual-based sintered ceramsite in biofilter for domestic wastewater treatment

Aluminum (Al)-based drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) has often been attempted to be recycled as dominant ingredient to produce sintered ceramsite for water treatment. This study aimed to determine the long-term performance of DWTR-based ceramsite in treating domestic wastewater based on a 385-d biofilter test and by using physicochemical, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic analyses. The results showed that the ceramsite-packed biofilter exhibited high and stable capability in removing phosphorus (P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), with removal efficiencies of 92.6 ± 3.97% and 81.1 ± 14.0% for total P and COD, respectively; moreover, 88-100% of ammonium-nitrogen (N) was normally converted, and the total N removal efficiency reached 80-86% under proper aeration. Further analysis suggested that the forms of the removed P in the ceramsite were mainly NH4F- and NaOH-extractable. Microbial communities in the ceramsite biofilter exhibited relatively high activity. Typically, various organic matter degradation-related genes (e.g., hemicellulose and starch degradations) were enriched, and a complete N-cycling pathway was established, which is beneficial for enriching microbes involved in ammonium-N conversion, especially Candidatus Brocadia, Candidatus Jettenia, Nitrosomonas, and Nitrospira. In addition, the structures of the ceramsite had high stability (e.g., compressive strength and major compositions). The ceramsites showed limited metal and metalloid pollution risks and even accumulated copper from the wastewater. These results demonstrate the high feasibility of applying ceramsite prepared from Al-based DWTR for water treatment.

The impact of recycling polyaluminium chloride and anionic polyacrylamide water treatment residuals on heavy metal adsorption in soils: implications for stormwater bioretention systems

Despite the high adsorption capacity of polyaluminum chloride and anionic polyacrylamide water treatment residuals (PAC-APAM WTRs) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+, their influence on the adsorption behavior of heavy metals in traditional bioretention soil media remains unclear. This study investigated the impact of PAC-APAM WTRs at a 20% weight ratio on the adsorption removal of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ in three types of soils. The results demonstrated improved heavy metal adsorption in the presence of PAC-APAM WTRs, with enhanced removal observed at higher pH levels and temperatures. The addition of PAC-APAM WTRs augmented the maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ (from 0.98 to 3.98%), Cd2+ (from 0.52 to 10.99%), Cu2+ (from 3.69 to 36.79%), and Zn2+ (from 2.63 to 13.46%). The Langmuir model better described the data in soils with and without PAC-APAM WTRs. The pseudo-second-order model more accurately described the adsorption process, revealing an irreversible chemical process, although qe demonstrated improvement with the addition of PAC-APAM WTRs. This study affirms the potential of PAC-APAM WTRs as an amendment for mitigating heavy metal pollution in stormwater bioretention systems. Further exploration of the engineering application of PAC-APAM WTRs, particularly in field conditions for the removal of dissolved heavy metals, is recommended.

Pollutant accumulation and microbial community evolution in rain gardens with different drainage types at field scale

Rain gardens play a key role in urban non-point source pollution control. The drainage type affects the infiltration processes of runoff pollutants. The soil properties and microbial community structures were studied to reveal the stability of the ecosystem in rain gardens with different drainage types under long-term operation. The results showed that the soil water content and total organic carbon in the drained rain gardens were always higher than that of the infiltrated ones. With the increase in running time, the contents of heavy metals in rain gardens showed significant accumulation phenomena, especially the contents of Zn and Pb in drained rain gardens were higher than that in infiltrated ones. The accumulation of pollutants resulted in lower microbial diversity in drained rain gardens than in infiltrated rain gardens, but the microbial community structures were the same in all rain gardens. The effects of drainage type on microbial community evolution were not significant, only the accumulation of heavy metals led to changes in the abundance of dominant microorganisms. There were differences in the soil environment of rain gardens with different drainage types. The long-term operation of rain gardens led to fluctuations in the soil ecosystem, while the internal micro-ecosystems of the drained rain gardens were in unstable states.

Do drinking water treatment residuals underperform in the presence of compost in stormwater media filters?

Drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a waste-derived product, are often recommended to use as an amendment in stormwater biofilters to enhance their capacity to remove phosphate and microbial pollutants. However, their efficacy has been assumed to remain high in the presence of compost, one of the most common amendments used in biofilters. This study tests the validity of that assumption by comparing the removal capacities of WTR-amended biofilters with and without the presence of compost. Our results show that amending sand with WTR increased E. coli removal by at least 1-log, but the addition of compost in the sand-WTR media lowered the removal capacity by 13 %. Similarly, the addition of WTR to sand improved phosphate removal to nearly 1177 %, but the removal decreased slightly by 8 % when adding compost to the media. The results confirmed that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from the compost could compete for adsorption sites for bacteria and phosphate, thereby lowering WTR's adsorption capacity based on the amount of DOC adsorbed on WTR. Collectively, these results indicate that the stormwater treatment industry should avoid mixing compost with WTR to get the maximum benefits of WTR for bacterial removal and improve the performance lifetime of WTR-amended biofilters.

Phosphorus adsorption and organic release from dried and thermally treated water treatment sludge

The study investigated water treatment sludge (WTS) as a phosphorus (P) adsorbent and examined the release of organic matter during the P adsorption process. Previous studies indicated that WTS is an effective adsorbent for P but also releases organic matter, which may affect the organoleptic properties of treated water, but no study has characterised organic release and conducted an in-depth study on its behaviours. This study characterised the organic release during the P adsorption process from four different WTS samples. This study also offers results from a 60-day column experiment that indicate that WTS columns effectively removed the majority of P from the 2 mg/L feed solution. The total organic carbon (TOC) release was gradually reduced from 24.9 mg/L on day 1 to stable levels of 4.4 mg/L to 4.1 mg/L from day 22 onwards. After 60 days, when the organic matter was nearly exhausted, WTS columns were still effective in P adsorption from the solution. In addition, the thermal treatment of WTS at different temperatures was investigated to reduce TOC release and increase P adsorption. The results showed that thermal treatment not only minimized TOC release but also enhanced the P adsorption capacity of the sludge. In a 24-h batch experiment, WTS treated at 600 °C showed the highest P adsorption (1.7 mg/g) with negligible TOC release when compared to sludge treated at 500 °C WTS (1.2 mg/g), 700 °C WTS (1.5 mg/g) and dried WTS (0.75 mg/g). However, the release of inorganic compounds slightly increased after thermal treatment. Future studies could focus on determining whether the thermal processing of WTS which can enhance the WTS's adsorption to emerging pollutants like per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and other contaminants. The findings of this study could influence the management practices of water authorities and contribute to the water sector's sustainability objectives.

Application of modified water treatment residuals in water and wastewater treatment: A review

Large quantities of sludge known as water treatment residuals (WTRs) are generated from water treatment facilities across the world. Various attempts have been made to reuse these residuals. Among the different applications of WTRs, their reuse in water and wastewater treatment has received more attention. However, direct application of raw WTRs is associated with some limitations. In the last decade, in order to improve their characteristics, numerous investigators have modified WTRs by different methods. This paper reviews the different methods applied to WTRs to enhance their characteristics. The effects of these modifications on their characteristics are explained. The applications of modified WTRs as a filtration/adsorption medium for treating textile/dye wastewater, groundwater containing different anionic and cationic pollutants, storm water runoff, and as a substrate in constructed wetlands are presented in detail. Future research needs are highlighted. The review clearly indicates the potential of different modification methods to improve the removal of a variety of pollutants by WTRs from water and wastewater.

A model for predicting reduction in mobile phosphorus of lake sediment by aluminum drinking water treatment residuals

Drinking water treatment residual (DWTR) derived from flocculation and sedimentation of raw water using aluminum coagulants is a valuable environmental remediation byproduct capable of inactivating phosphorus (P). However, no generalizable model exists in the literature to describe reduction of releasable (mobile) P in lake sediment as a result of DWTR addition. The reduction of mobile P (sum of labile P and reductant soluble P) was investigated in over 100 sub-samples using five sediment samples from two lakes and three DWTRs from different water treatment plants. A consistent relationship was determined across a range of mobile P contents (0.23 g/m²/cm to 0.92 g/m²/cm, or 15.8 to 186.1 µg/g DW) and DWTRs. The relationship was best described as a function of the mobile P content of the sediment and the oxalate-extractable aluminum content of the DWTR. An empirical model was developed to predict the immediate reduction in mobile P following the addition of DWTR containing aluminum. This model was validated using two additional lake sediments and one additional DWTR (R² = 0.995). Thus, the immediate inactivation of P in lake sediment following DWTR addition can be predicted with this model, which can be used with internal P loading or other water quality goals to determine an appropriate DWTR dose. Further recommendations were made about dosing DWTRs for lake restoration, allowing practitioners to use DWTR to inactivate P in lake sediment without conducting individual sorption experiments.

Application of electrochemical oxidation for the enhancement of antibiotic resistant bacteria removal in stormwater bioretention cells

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to the removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) during electrochemical advanced oxidation processes. However, there is still no available literature about the application of electrochemical oxidation (EO) to enhance ARB removal in stormwater bioretention cells. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate target ARB (E. coli K-12 carrying blaTEM, tetR and aphA) removals in bioretention cells with different current densities and ratios of air to water (A/W). ARB removals for bioretention cells with 17.6 μA/m² of current density and 24:1 of A/W ratio was the largest with 5.28 log reduction, which was obviously higher than the one (3.68 log reduction) in the control (without EO). H₂O₂ production could be responsible for ARB removals in the used bioretention cells, where H₂O₂ levels increased at first and then decreased with the increase of current densities and A/W ratios. The evaluation for the application of EO implied that the highest antibiotic resistance (AR) conjugation frequency (3.8 × 10^-3) at 3.5 μA/m² of current density and 48:1 of A/W ratios was 124.5 % of the one in the control, while the largest AR transformation frequencies at 17.6 μA/m² of current density and 48:1 of A/W ratios was 366.9 % (tetR) and 216.2 % (aphA) of the corresponding in the control, and there were still stable for both dominant microflora and metabolic activities in bioretention cells with electricity and aeration, suggesting that EO could be promising for the enhancement of ARB removals in bioretention cells.

Ceramsite made from drinking water treatment residue for water treatment: A critical review in association with typical ceramsite making

The use of ceramsite to construct filtration systems (e.g., biofilters) is a common method for water treatment. To promote such applications, the development of low-cost, high-performance, and environmentally friendly ceramsites has received increasing attention from scientists, and a critical step in the development is the preparation of raw materials. As an inevitable and non-hazardous by-product during potable water production, drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) is typically recycled to make water treatment ceramsite to promote recycling in filtration systems. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap regarding DWTR in making ceramsites for water treatment. The results suggest that the fabrication methods for DWTR-based ceramsite can be generally classified into sintering and non-sintering procedures. For the sintering method, owing to the heterogeneous properties (especially aluminum, iron, and calcium), DWTR has been applied as various sub-ingredients for raw materials preparations. In contrast, for the non-sintering method, DWTR is commonly applied as the main ingredient, and natural curing, physical crosslinking, and thermal treatment methods have been typically adopted to make ceramsite. However, DWTR-based ceramsites tend to have a high adsorption capability and favorable microbial effects to control different kinds of pollution (e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and organic matter). Future work is typically recommended to thoroughly evaluate the performance of DWTR-based ceramsite-constructed filtration systems to control water pollution concerning the making procedures, the potential to control pollution, the stability, and the safety of raw DWTR-based ceramsite, providing systematic information to design more proper planning for beneficial recycling.

Potential application of spent mushroom compost (SMC) biochar as low-cost filtration media in heavy metal removal from abandoned mining water: a review

Overpopulation and rapid development have put an increasing burden on the environment, leading to various water crisis. Importing water from abandoned mines as an alternative raw water source could be the next answer to alleviate water scarcity problems globally. However, due to its high heavy metals content, there is a need to find an economical and effective method to remove heavy metals before reusing it as potable water source. Biochar, a low-cost and carbon-rich biosorbent, has received increasing attention on its application as a remediating agent to remove heavy metals from water. Previous studies have revealed the potential properties of biochar as a heavy metal removal agent including high cation exchange capacity, high surface area, active surface functional groups, as well as efficient adsorption. Apparently, the most important factor influencing the sorption mechanism is the type of feedstock materials. Spent mushroom compost (SMC), a waste product from mushroom cultivation, has been found as an excellent biosorbent. SMC has received global attention as it is low cost and eco-friendly. It also has been proved as an efficient heavy metals remover from water. Nevertheless, its application as biochar is still scarce. Therefore, this review focuses on the potential of transforming SMC into modified biochar to remove heavy metals, especially from abandoned mining water. The present review emphasizes the current trends in adsorption methods for heavy metal removal from water, assembles data from previous studies on the feedstock of biosorbents to biochars, and discusses the potentials of SMC as a biochar for water treatment.

Correlation of Phosphorus Adsorption with Chemical Properties of Aluminum-Based Drinking Water Treatment Residuals Collected from Various Parts of the United States

Over the past several decades, the value of drinking water treatment residuals (WTRs), a byproduct of the coagulation process during water purification, has been recognized in various environmental applications, including sustainable remediation of phosphorus (P)-enriched soils. Aluminum-based WTRs (Al-WTRs) are suitable adsorbent materials for P, which can be obtained and processed inexpensively. However, given their heterogeneous nature, it is essential to identify an easily analyzable chemical property that can predict the capability of Al-WTRs to bind P before soil amendment. To address this issue, thirteen Al-WTRs were collected from various geographical locations around the United States. The non-hazardous nature of the Al-WTRs was ascertained first. Then, their P adsorption capacities were determined, and the chemical properties likely to influence their adsorption capacities were examined. Statistical models were built to identify a single property to best predict the P adsorption capacity of the Al-WTRs. Results show that all investigated Al-WTRs are safe for environmental applications, and oxalate-extractable aluminum is a significant indicator of the P adsorption capacity of Al-WTRs (p-value = 0.0002, R2 = 0.7). This study is the first to report a simple chemical test that can be easily applied to predict the efficacy of Al-WTRs in binding P before their broadscale land application.

Phosphorus and Heavy Metals Removal from Stormwater Runoff Using Granulated Industrial Waste for Retrofitting Catch Basins

Phosphorus and heavy metals are washed off and transported with stormwater runoff to nearby surface water bodies resulting in environmental and human health risks. Catch basins remain one of the primary gateways through which stormwater runoff and pollutants from urban areas are transported. Retrofitting catch basins to enhance their phosphorus and heavy metal removal can be an effective approach. In this study, aluminum-based water treatment residual (WTR, a non-hazardous byproduct of the water treatment process) was granulated via a green method to serve as a sustainable filter material, called WTR granules, for enhancing the capabilities of catch basins to remove phosphorus and heavy metals. The WTR granules were field tested in a parking lot in Hoboken, New Jersey. Twelve storm events were monitored. The results showed that the WTR granules significantly (p < 0.05) reduced dissolved P, Cu, and Zn, as well as total P, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations in stormwater runoff without signs of disintegration. No flooding or water ponding was observed during the implementation. Results suggest the WTR granules are an inexpensive, green filter material that can be used for retrofitting catch basins to remove phosphorus and heavy metals effectively.

A long term study elucidates the relationship between media amendment and pollutant treatment in the stormwater bioretention system: Stability or efficiency?

Media amendment has been more and more frequently tested in stormwater bioretention systems for enhanced runoff pollutant treatment. However, few studies systematically evaluated the amended system over a long time span, which hindered the further optimization of the proposed amended media. In this study, biochar-pyrite system (PB), conventional sand system (SB), and biochar-woodchip system (WB) were established and operated for 26 months. Media amendment greatly enhanced the dissolved nutrient removal, the highest total dissolved nitrogen removal in PB and WB were 65.6±3.6% and 68.2±2.5%, respectively. Compared with PB, WB could maintain excellent nitrogen removal under long-term operation. In contrast, PB demonstrated stable and more effective total dissolved phosphorus removal during all stages (73.1±3.1%-80.3±4.1%). A high content of phosphorus and organic matter was leached in WB especially at initial operation, while the initial pollutant leaching in PB and SB is much lower, about one-third of WB. Microbial and metabolic function analysis indicated that the microbial community in the bioretention system is complicated and stable. Media amendment enhanced microbial diversity and the relative abundance of functional genera related to nitrogen (Nitrospira, Thauera, Denitratisoma, etc.), sulfur (Thiobacillus, Geobacter, Desulfovibrio, etc.), and carbon cycles (cellulomonas, saccharimonadales, and SBR1031, etc.), which well explained the enhanced pollutant removal and by-product leaching in different systems. Overall, the current study indicates that although media amendment is conducive to enhanced dissolved nutrient removal in bioretention systems, it can hardly maintain both stability and efficiency from initial set-up to long-term operation. In practical application, catchment characteristics, prioritized pollutants, meteorological factors, etc. should all be considered before choosing suitable amended media and its design factors, thereby maximising the stability and efficiency of the bioretention system.

Application of biochar as an innovative soil ameliorant in bioretention system for stormwater treatment: A review of performance and its influencing factors

As an emerging environment functional material, biochar has become a research hotspot in environmental fields because of its excellent ecological and environmental benefits. Recently, biochar has been used as an innovative soil ameliorant in bioretention systems (BRS) to effectively enhance pollutant removal efficiency for BRS. This paper summarizes and evaluates the performance and involved mechanisms of biochar amendment in BRS with respect to the removal of nutrients (TN (34-47.55%) and PO₄^3--P (47-99.8%)), heavy metals (25-100%), pathogenic microorganisms (Escherichia coli (30-98%)), and organic contaminants (77.2-100%). For biochar adsorption, the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models are the most suitable kinetic and isothermal adsorption models, respectively. Furthermore, we analyzed and elucidated some factors that influence the pollutant removal performance of biochar-amended BRS, such as the types of biochar, the preparation process and physicochemical properties of biochar, the aging of biochar, the chemical modification of biochar, and the hydraulic loading, inflow concentration and drying-rewetting alternation of biochar-amended BRS. The high potential for recycling spent biochar in BRS as a soil ameliorant is proposed. Collectively, biochar can be used as an improved medium in BRS. This review provides a foundation for biochar selection in biochar-amended BRS. Future research and practical applications of biochar-amended BRS should focus on the long-term stability of treatment performances under field conditions, chemical modification with co-impregnated nanomaterials in biochar surface, and the durability, aging, and possible negative effects of biochar.

Influence of urban runoff pollutant first flush strength on bioretention pollutant removal performance

Bioretention is commonly used for runoff pollution control. The first flush strength of pollutants can affect bioretention performance. To examine the influence of the first flush strength on bioretention performance, bioretention columns filled with garden soil as the main media were established. Activated carbon and water treatment residuals (WTR) were added and compared for their ability to enhance phosphorus removal. Waste edible fungus culture medium (WEFCM) as a carbon source was also explored. When WEFCM was used as a carbon source instead of wood chips, total nitrogen (TN) removal increased from 60.83 ± 21.22 to 62.21 ± 16.43%, but chemical oxygen demand (COD) leaching was observed. WTR was better able than activated carbon to enhance phosphorus removal (87.97 ± 8.87 vs. 81.66 ± 9.27%) without impacting TN removal. NH₄⁺-N removal increased with increasing first flush strength, but there was no trend for suspended solids (SS), COD, TN, or total phosphorus. First leaching phenomenon in bioretention outflow was proposed in this study. A low first leaching was observed in the outflow when the inflow had a uniform pollutant mass (i.e., no first flush) because of media leaching. A weak first leaching outflow was observed for SS and COD when they were present at strong first flush inflow.

Competitive adsorption of Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ onto water treatment residuals: implications for mobility in stormwater bioretention systems

The lack of knowledge regarding competitive adsorption of heavy metal ions onto water treatment residuals has been hindering their reuse as a medium in stormwater bioretention systems. Competitive adsorption of copper(II), lead(II), cadmium(II), and zinc(II) onto polyaluminium chloride and anionic polyacrylamide water treatment residuals (PAC-APAM WTRs) was evaluated with different pH, temperature, initial concentration, and time. The competitive adsorption removal increased with the increase of pH and temperature. The analysis of the ratios of maximum adsorption capacity of a heavy metal ionic species in a multi-component system to that in a mono-component system (Q_mix/Q_mono) demonstrated that the coexisting ion had a negative effect on the adsorption of a metal ionic species. The Langmuir model provided a better fit, indicating that the adsorption could be a monolayer adsorption process. The modified Langmuir isotherm studies showed that the affinity order in the multi-component systems was Cu²⁺>Pb²⁺>Cd²⁺>Zn²⁺. The pseudo-second-order model better described the adsorption kinetics implying that the competitive adsorption behavior could be interpreted by diffusion-based mechanisms. This study contributed to a better understanding the mobility of those frequently occurring heavy metal ions in stormwater runoff in the PAC-APAM WTRs media layer of stormwater bioretention systems.

Implementation of P-Reactive Layer for Improving Urban Water Quality: Kinetic Studies, Dimensioning and Economic Analysis

Urbanization and climate change affecting water quality are the most critical problems that humanity has to encounter globally. Undoubtedly, urban water bodies are heavily contaminated by phosphorus (P). This study aims to identify the mechanisms and efficiency of the P sorption process for selected reactive materials (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), Filtralite® Nature P, lightweight expanded clay aggregate (Leca®), limestone, opoka, and zeolite) with surface water as adsorbate and dimension of P-reactive reactive layer supported with economic analysis. Four kinetic models were used to know the sorption mechanism: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, and intra-particle diffusion model. Calculating the P-reactive layer was based on dimensioning rain retention spaces standards. The pseudo-second model provided the best description of the adsorption kinetics of most materials. The sorption properties obtained after 72 h showed the reduction of 83, 81, 59, 53, 37, and 36% for AAC, opoka, Filtralite® Nature P; limestone, Leca®, and zeolite, respectively. Depending on the volume, the P-reactive layer can remove 29–77 or 61–163 g of P-PO4. The unit cost of removing P-PO4 by the P-reactive layer range from 49.57 to 85.53 €/P-PO4 g. For these reasons, reactive materials seem to be an effective way of removing P from the urban water environment worldwide from both environmental and economic points of view.

Field Application of Spent Lime Water Treatment Residual for the Removal of Phosphorus and other Pollutants in Urban Stormwater Runoff

The threat of anthropogenic eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in lakes requires the development of innovative stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the external loading of phosphorus (P). This paper presents the findings of a 5-year study of a full-scale P removal structure constructed in Minnesota, USA with spent lime drinking water treatment residual (DWTR), a by-product of water softening at a local water treatment plant. Influent and effluent water samples were collected by auto-samplers during 43 storm events during the growing season. Samples were analyzed for P constituents, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Toxicity of the effluent was assessed using Ceriodaphnia dubia. Flow-weighted removal effectiveness was calculated for each storm event. Overall, the spent lime DWTR reduced total P loading by 70.9%, dissolved reactive P by 78.5%, dissolved P by 74.7%, and TSS by 58.5%. A significant reduction in heavy metals was also observed. Toxicity tests indicated the aquatic toxicity of the effluent treated with spent lime DWTR was not different from untreated stormwater. This study provided long-term real-world data that demonstrated that a full-scale P removal structure with spent lime DWTR significantly reduced P and other pollutants in stormwater discharging to an urban lake. Therefore, spent lime DWTR, which is currently treated as a waste product, is a promising filter material for stormwater treatment.

Ceramsite production using water treatment residue as main ingredient: The key affecting factors identification

As an inevitable by-product of potable water production, drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) recycling to make ceramsite can provide both environmental and economic benefits in constructing filtration treatment system for water environment remediation. Given the varied properties of DWTR from different waterworks, this study aims to identify the key factors affecting ceramsite production from DWTR as main ingredient based on five different DWTR with using clay as the auxiliary material. The results showed that of sintering temperature (500-1000 °C), DWTR:clay ratio (5:5 to 9:1), sintering time (5-60 min), and granule diameter (5-15 mm), the sintering temperature was the key parameter. Increasing temperatures from 500 to 1000 °C gradually promoted DWTR sintering by enhancing Si and Al crystallization, which typically increased the formation of SiO₂ and CaAl₂Si₂O₈ crystals in ceramsite. Ceramsites made from different DWTR tended to have different properties, mainly resulting from varied contents of Si (20.2%-48.6%), K (0.0894%-2.39%), Fe (4.56%-14.3%), and loss on ignition (11.7%-39.5%). During ingredients preparation to produce up-to-standard ceramsite, supplying additional Si and diluting loss on ignition were necessary for all DWTR, while supplying K and diluting Fe may be required for specific DWTR, due to the potential varied DWTR compositions caused by different water production processes applied (e.g., type of flocculants). Further toxicity characteristic leaching procedure analysis indicated the increased leaching of Cu. However, DWTR based ceramsite was identified as non-hazardous material; even, sintering treatment reduced the leachability of Ba, Be, Cd, and Cr. DWTR based ceramsite also had relatively high specific surface area (22.1-50.5 m²/g) and could adsorb Cd, Cu, and Pb from solution. Overall, based on appropriate management, DWTR can be recycled as the main ingredient in the production of ceramsite for water environment remediation.

Enhanced nutrient removal from stormwater runoff by a compact on-site treatment system

Efficient and space-saving technologies for on-site treatment of stormwater runoff are required to control water pollution in the urban surface. The intermittent nature of stormwater runoff and extremely limited land available greatly hindered the application of current wastewater treatment technologies, and thus synchronous removal of multiple contaminants (especially for nutrient) efficiently was failed by current processes. In this study, a new compact CFFA treatment system, consisting of coagulation, flocculation, filtration and ammonium ion exchange units, was constructed for on-site treatment of stormwater runoff based on batch test optimization and pilot-scale test verification. The coagulation process effectively aggregated particles and precipitated phosphorus by dosing Al₂(SO₄)₃, while flocculation using anionic polyacrylamide further enlarged particle size for efficient micromesh filtration. The dynamic micromesh filtration obtained turbidity and phosphorus removal efficiencies comparable to 30 min gravity settling with greatly smaller footprint. Ion exchange by zeolite showed higher exchange capacity owing to lower initial ammonium nitrogen concentration in the stormwater runoff. The pilot-scale experiments with treatment capacity of 1 L/s showed that the CFFA treatment system achieved synchronous removal of particles (97.2%), nitrogen (79.7%), phosphorus (95.0%) and organic matters (83.3%) efficiently within short hydraulic retention time of 0.35 h, yielding effluent with chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, total phosphorus and total nitrogen of 38.7, 7.80, 0.22 and 2.80 mg/L, respectively. The CFFA treatment system had the highest pollutant removal loads compared to reported runoff treatment processes in literatures, and was well suited to on-site treatment of stormwater runoff with high space utilization efficiency.

Field Study of the Road Stormwater Runoff Bioretention System with Combined Soil Filter Media and Soil Moisture Conservation Ropes in North China

Growing concerns about urban runoff pollution and water scarcity caused by urbanization have prompted the application of bioretention facilities to manage urban stormwater. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of proposed bioretention facilities regarding road runoff pollutant removal and the variation characteristics of the media physicochemical properties and microbial diversity in dry-cold regions. Two types of bioretention facilities were designed and then constructed in Tianjin Eco-city, China, on the basis of combined soil filter media screened by a laboratory-scale test with a modified bioretention facility (MBF) containing soil moisture conservation ropes. Redundancy analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between the variation in media physicochemical properties and microbial communities. An increase in media moisture could promote an increase in the relative abundance of several dominant microbial communities. In the MBF, the relatively low nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) (0.75 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (4.71 mg/L) effluent concentrations, as well as better removal efficiencies for TN and NO3-N in challenge tests, were mainly attributed to the greater relative abundance of Proteobacteria (25.2%) that are involved in the microbial nitrogen transformation process. The MBF also had greater media microbial richness (5253 operational taxonomic units) compared to the conventional bioretention facility and in situ saline soils. The results indicate that stormwater runoff treated by both bioretention facilities has potential use for daily greening and road spraying. The proposed design approach for bioretention facilities is applicable to LID practices and sustainable stormwater management in other urban regions.

Biochar-based bioretention systems for removal of chemical and microbial pollutants from stormwater: A critical review

Biochar has been increasingly used as a filter medium in engineered low impact development systems (e.g., bioretention systems) for decontamination of urban stormwater and management of hydrology. This review paper critically analyzes the performance of biochar-based biofiltration systems for removal of chemical and microbial pollutants present in urban runoff. Biochar-amended biofiltration systems efficiently remove diverse pollutants such as total nitrogen (32 - 61%), total phosphorus: (45 - 94%), heavy metals (27 - 100%), organics (54 - 100%) and microbial pollutants (log₁₀ removal: 0.78 - 4.23) from urban runoff. The variation of biofiltration performance is due to changes in biochar characteristics, the abundance of dissolved organic matter and/or stormwater chemistry. The dominant mechanisms responsible for removal of chemical pollutants are sorption, ion exchange and/or biotransformation, whereas filtration/straining is the major mechanism for bacteria removal. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm are the best models that describe the kinetics and chemical equilibrium of pollutants, respectively. This critical review provides the fundamental scientific knowledge for designing highly efficient biochar-based bioretention systems for removal of diverse pollutants from urban stormwater. The key knowledge gaps that should be addressed in future research include long-term field-scale bioretention study, development of novel methods for filter media regeneration/reuse, and dynamics of filter media microbial communities.

Drinking water treatment residual as a ballast to sink Microcystis cyanobacteria and inactivate phosphorus in tropical lake water

The combination of a low dose of coagulant with a ballast that can inactive phosphorus (P) in lake sediment-a technique known as "flock and lock"-is one method for restoration of eutrophic lakes. The effectiveness of a drinking water treatment residual (DWTR) as a ballast in flock and lock was assessed using assays of eutrophic lake water from Thailand dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa cyanobacteria colonies by measuring changes in chlorophyll-a, pH, and zeta potential. P sorption isotherms were developed from long-term batch equilibrium experiments; desorption of nutrients and metals was assessed via leaching experiments; and morphological changes to cellular structure were assessed using scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that combining DWTR with a low dose of aluminum sulfate (0.6-4.0 mg Al/L) effectively sank 74-96% of Microcystis, with DWTR dose (50-400 mg/L), initial chlorophyll-a concentration (92-976 µg/L), pH (7.4-9.3), and alkalinity (99-108 ppm CaCO₃) identified as factors significantly associated with sinking efficacy. P sorption capacity of the DWTR (7.12 mg/g) was significantly higher than a local soil (0.33 mg/g), enabling the DWTR to inactivate P in lake sediment. Desorption of Al, Fe, Ca and N from the DWTR was estimated to contribute to a marginal increase in concentrations of those compounds in the water column of a small shallow lake (1.2, 0.66, 53.4, and 0.07 µg/L, respectively) following a simulated application. Therefore, pre-treated DWTRs may be a viable alternative ballast in the flock and lock approach to lake restoration, supplementing or replacing modified local soils or lanthanum modified clays.

N, P, and COD conveyed by urban runoff: a comparative research between a city and a town in the Taihu Basin, China

Stormwater runoff containing various pollutants exerts adverse effects on receiving water bodies and deteriorates the urban aquatic environment. Although numerous studies have been conducted on runoff pollution, research comparing its characteristics in cities with those in towns is rare in the literature. To close this gap, the present study was conducted. The instantaneous concentrations of ammonia-N, TN, TP, and COD during the rainfall events in the town were higher than those in the city in most conditions. The outfall concentrations increased with the increase of rainfall intensity. EMCs (the average value of EMC) and CV (coefficient of variation) of TN and DTN in the town were higher than those in the city, which may lie in the differences of urban environment planning and management, road cleaning methods, garbage disposal methods, industrial enterprise, etc. On the one hand, EMCs and CV of TP in the city's industrial areas were lowest among three functional areas, while on the other hand, in the town it was in the commercial areas rather than the industrial areas that EMCs and CV were the lowest, which may be caused by the low level of economic development of small towns in China. The concentrations of COD in the town were generally higher than that in the city. Compared with the city, the correlation among COD and various forms of N was stronger in the town, which may illustrate a stronger similarity of pollutant sources in the town. According to the results, road runoff in the town contributed more to urban aquatic pollution; thus, further research should concentrate on this particular type of runoff.

A review on plant-microbial interactions, functions, mechanisms and emerging trends in bioretention system to improve multi-contaminated stormwater treatment

Management and treatment of multi-polluted stormwater in bioretention system have gained significant attraction recently. Besides nutrients, recent source appointment studies found elevated levels of Potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in stormwater that highlighted many limitations in conventional media adsorption-based pollutant removal bioretention strategies. The substantial new studies include biological treatment approaches to strengthen pollutants degradation and adsorption capacity of bioretention. The knowledge on characteristics of plants and their corresponding mechanisms in various functions, e.g., rainwater interception, retention, infiltration, media clogging prevention, evapotranspiration and phytoremediation, is scattered. The microorganisms' role in facilitating vegetation and media, plant-microorganism interactions and relative performance over different functions in bioretention is still unreviewed. To uncover the underneath, it was summarised plant and microbial studies and their functionality in hydrogeochemical cycles in the bioretention system in this review, contributing to finding their interconnections and developing a more efficient bioretention system. Additionally, source characteristics of stormwater and fate of associated pollutants in the environment, the potential of genetical engineered plants, algae and fungi in bioretention system as well as performance assessment of plants and microorganisms in non-bioretention studies to propose the possible solution of un-addressed problems in bioretention system have been put forward in this review. The present review can be used as an imperative reference to enlighten the advantages of adopting multidisciplinary approaches for the environment sustainability and pollution control.

Washing and Heat Treatment of Aluminum-Based Drinking Water Treatment Residuals to Optimize Phosphorus Sorption and Nitrogen Leaching: Considerations for Lake Restoration

Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs) generated during drinking water treatment have been proposed for use in lake restoration as a solid-phase sorbent to inactivate phosphorus (P) in lake sediment. However, treatments that minimize leaching of nitrogen (N) and optimize P sorption capacity may be necessary prior to use. This study assessed seven different treatment methods, including washing and heat treatments at different temperatures and with and without oxygen limitation, among two DWTRs from Thailand. Results showed that oxygen-limited heat treatment at 600 °C substantially reduced N leaching (<0.2 mg/kg TKN) while also improving P sorption capacity (increase of 18–32% compared to untreated DWTR) to a maximum of 45.7 mg P/kg. Washing with deionized water reduced N leaching if a sufficient volume was used but did not improve P sorption. Heating at 200 °C with or without the presence of oxygen did not improve N leaching or P sorption. Regression of P sorption parameters from a two-surface Langmuir isotherm against physio-chemical properties indicated that oxalate-extractable (i.e., amorphous) aluminum and iron were significantly associated with total P sorption capacity (R2 = 0.94), but micropores and oxalate-extractable P modulated the P sorption from high-affinity to low-affinity mechanisms. In conclusion, this study confirmed the importance of amorphous aluminum in DWTRs for inactivating P, and the results suggest that high-temperature treatment under oxygen-limited conditions may be the most reliable way to optimize DWTRs for environmental remediation applications.

Pilot and Field Studies of Modular Bioretention Tree System with Talipariti tiliaceum and Engineered Soil Filter Media in the Tropics

Stormwater runoff management is challenging in a highly urbanised tropical environment due to the unique space constraints and tropical climate conditions. A modular bioretention tree (MBT) with a small footprint and a reduced on-site installation time was explored for application in a tropical environment. Tree species used in the pilot studies were Talipariti tiliaceum (TT1) and Sterculia macrophylla (TT2). Both of the MBTs could effectively remove total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), zinc, copper, cadmium, and lead with removal efficiencies of greater than 90%. Total nitrogen (TN) removal was noted to be significantly higher in the wet period compared to the dry period (p < 0.05). Variation in TN removal between TT1 and TT2 were attributed to the nitrogen uptake and the root formation of the trees species. A field study MBT using Talipariti tiliaceum had a very clean effluent quality, with average TSS, TP, and TN effluent EMC of 4.8 mg/L, 0.04 mg/L, and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. Key environmental factors were also investigated to study their impact on the performance of BMT. It was found that the initial pollutant concentration, the dissolved fraction of influent pollutants, and soil moisture affect the performance of the MBT. Based on the results from this study, the MBT demonstrates good capability in the improvement of stormwater runoff quality.

Application of Alum Sludge in Wastewater Treatment Processes: “Science” of Reuse and Reclamation Pathways

Alum sludge (AlS) refers to the inevitable by-product generated during the drinking water purification process, where Al-salt is used as a coagulant in the water industry. It has long been treated as “waste”, while landfill is its major final disposal destination. In fact, AlS is an underutilized material with huge potential for beneficial reuse as a raw material in various wastewater treatment processes. In the last two decades, intensive studies have been conducted worldwide to explore the “science” and practical application of AlS. This paper focuses on the recent developments in the use of AlS that show its strong potential for reuse in wastewater treatment processes. In particular, the review covers the key “science” of the nature and mechanisms of AlS, revealing why AlS has the potential to be a value-added material. In addition, the future focus of research towards the widespread application of AlS as a raw material/product in commercial markets is suggested, which expands the scope for AlS research and development.

Behavioral and biochemical consequences of Danio rerio larvae exposure to polylactic acid bioplastic

The literature has largely shown the toxicity of petroleum-based PLA biomicroplastics (PLABioMPs) and encouraged the production of alternative materials to replace their use, such as biopolymers. However, knowledge concerning the effects of biopolymers on aquatic organisms remains under development. The hypothesis that the acute exposure (five days) to polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers may lead to behavioral and biochemical changes and to their accumulation in Danio rerio larvae was tested. Based on the results, PLA biomicroplastics (PLA BioMPs) at concentration of 3 and 9 mg/L decreased swimming distance and speed of larvae in the open field test. This outcome suggests effects on animals' locomotor and exploration activities. Larvae's longer immobility time and greater permanence in the peripheral zone of the apparatus is indicative of anxiety-like behavior caused by the exposure to PLA BioMPs. Zebrafish larvae accumulated PLA BioMPs and their acetylcholinesterase activity was inhibited by their presence, which reinforces the accumulative potential of biopolymers and their direct or indirect role as anxiogenic agents, even at sublethal concentrations. The decreased activity of acetylcholinesterase reinforces the neurotoxic action in groups exposed to PLA BioMPs. The current study has confirmed the initial hypothesis and is an insight about the toxicity of these biopolymers in D. rerio larvae, since it deepens the discussion about the environmental risk of these substances in freshwater ecosystems.

Fe/Mn- and P-modified drinking water treatment residuals reduced Cu and Pb phytoavailability and uptake in a mining soil

Management of industrial hazardous waste is of great concern. Recently, aluminum rich drinking water treatment residuals (Al-WTR) received considerable attention as a low-cost immobilizing agent for toxic elements in soils. However, the suitability and effectiveness of modified Al-WTR as stabilizing agent for toxic metals such as Cu and Pb in mining soil is not assessed yet. We examined the impact of different doses (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5%) of raw and Fe/Mn- and P- modified Al-WTR on the bioavailability and uptake of Cu and Pb by ryegrass in Cu and Pb contaminated mining soil. The addition of Fe/Mn-and P- modified Al-WTR to the soil reduced significantly the concentrations of Pb (up to 60% by Fe/Mn-Al-WTR and 32% by P-Al-WTR) and Cu (up to 45% by Fe/Mn-Al-WTR and 18% by P-Al-WTR) in the shoots and roots of ryegrass as compared to raw Al-WTRs and untreated soil. Our results demonstrate that modification of the raw Al-WTR increased its pH, CEC, specific surface area, active functional groups (Fe-O and Mn-O), and thus increased its immobilization efficiency. Our results highlight the potential of the modified Al-WTR, particularly the Fe/Mn-Al-WTR, for the remediation of Cu and Pb contaminated soils and recommend field scale verification.

Next generation swale design for stormwater runoff treatment: A comprehensive approach

Swales are the oldest and most common stormwater control measure for conveying and treating roadway runoff worldwide. Swales are also gaining popularity as part of stormwater treatment trains and as crucial elements in green infrastructure to build more resilient cities. To achieve higher pollutant reductions, swale alternatives with engineered media (bioswales) and wetland conditions (wet swales) are being tested. However, the available swale design guidance is primarily focused on hydraulic conveyance, overlooking their function as an important water quality treatment tool. The objective of this article is to provide science-based swale design guidance for treating targeted pollutants in stormwater runoff. This guidance is underpinned by a literature review. The results of this review suggest that well-maintained grass swales with check dams or infiltration swales are the best options for runoff volume reduction and removal of sediment and heavy metals. For nitrogen removal, wet swales are the most effective swale alternative. Bioswales are best for phosphorus and bacteria removal; both wet swales and bioswales can also treat heavy metals. Selection of a swale type depends on the site constraints, local climate, and available funding for design, construction, and operation. Appropriate siting, pre-design site investigations, and consideration of future maintenance during design are critical to successful long-term swale performance. Swale design recommendations based on a synthesis of the available research are provided, but actual design standards should be developed using local empirical data. Future research is necessary to identify optimal design parameters for all swale types, especially for wet swales.

Conventional and amended bioretention soil media for targeted pollutant treatment: A critical review to guide the state of the practice

Bioretention systems are widely used green infrastructure elements that utilize engineered bioretention soil media (BSM) for stormwater capture and treatment. Conventional bioretention soil media, which typically consists of sand, sandy loam, loamy sand or topsoil amended with compost, has limited capacity to remove and may leach some stormwater pollutants. Alternative engineered amendments, both organic and inorganic, have been tested to supplement BSM. Yet, municipalities and regulatory agencies have been slow to adopt these alternative amendments into their design specifications, partly because of a lack of clear guidance on how to select the right amendment to treat a target stormwater contaminant under highly variable climatic conditions. This article aims to provide that guidance by: (1) summarizing the current design BSM specifications adopted by jurisdictions worldwide, (2) comparing the performance of conventional and amended BSM, (3) highlighting advantages and limitations of BSM amendments, and (4) identifying challenges for implementing amendments in field conditions. The analysis not only informs the research community of the barriers faced by stormwater managers in implementing BSM amendments but also provides guidelines for their adoption by interested agencies to comply with existing regulations and meet design needs. This feedback loop could catalyze further innovation in the development of sustainable stormwater treatment technologies.

Mixed versus layered multi-media filter for simultaneous removal of nutrients and heavy metals from urban stormwater runoff

Beach closings are a growing concern in coastal regions because of serious public health and economic ramifications due to the presence of pollutants in stormwater runoff. An underground permeable filter system is proposed to treat such stormwater pollution. Selection of filter media that can treat multiple contaminants in stormwater runoff has been a challenging task. This paper investigates the effectiveness of mixed or layered filter media for the removal of mixed contaminants (nutrient and heavy metal) from synthetic stormwater. Sorption experiments were used to assess the ability of the combination of various materials (calcite, zeolite, sand, and iron filings) to remove nutrients and heavy metals. Based on the results of individual removal efficiency, four sets of combinations of media mixtures were prepared: three mixed media conditions and one layered media condition. Mixed media-1, containing higher ratio of calcite, zeolite, and iron filings, was found to achieve the highest removal efficiency of nitrate (96%), Cr (~ 99%), and Cu (~ 99%). Mixed media-2 removed Zn significantly with a removal efficiency higher than 99% due to the sorption capacity of iron filings and both mixed media-2 and 3 showed efficient removal of Ni (~ 94%) in effluent. Layered media was found to be most efficient in Cd removal (~ 99%). All mixture of materials showed more than 99% removal of total phosphorus and Pb. The sorption efficiency of the different mixtures showed that a combination of traditional (sand) and alternative materials (calcite, zeolite, and iron filings) can be used as an effective medium for the treatment of nutrient and heavy metal contaminants commonly found in stormwater.

Combined dual-size foam glass media filtration process with micro-flocculation for simultaneous removal of particulate and dissolved contaminants in urban road runoff

In this study, a combined media filtration process with micro-flocculation (CMF) was developed, to simultaneously treat particulate and dissolved contaminants in urban road runoff. Dual-size foam glass media with stone and sand layers were applied and the efficiency of road runoff treatment was investigated according to filtration and micro-flocculation under various experimental conditions (stone/sand layer ratio, linear velocity, and coagulant types). Moreover, the removal efficiencies of suspended solids (SS), phosphorus, organic carbon, and heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) by CMF were evaluated. The removal rate of SS was maintained to be above 84.1% for 1 h filtration by the dual-size foam glass, regardless of increasing pressure. The removal of phosphorus by micro-flocculation was more suitable in alum than ferric due to a higher initial floc growth rate and an increased particle size. The performance of the CMF was significantly improved over media filtration only process (MF) in removing both particulate and dissolved contaminants. The removal efficiency of all particulate pollutants by CMF was found to be more than 90%, and notably, the dissolved phosphorus, which was mostly not removed by MF, was also removed by 97.4%. Meanwhile, the backwash efficiency of CMF was half that of MF. Physical removal mechanisms, such as internal diffusion, dominated MF, whereas chemical removal mechanisms, such as adsorption and surface precipitation, dominated CMF. These results show the potential of the CMF process for the treatment of urban road runoff and identify the removal mechanisms of the filtration process that use micro-flocculation with dual-size foam glass.

Laboratory evaluation of alum, ferric and ferrous-water treatment residuals for removing phosphorous from surface water

Numerous drinking water plants and agricultural wastewaters generate water treatment residuals (WTR) during coagulation processes. These WTRs may be effective at reducing nutrients entering waterways, thereby decreasing the potential formation of algal blooms. Of the WTRs used in this study, Al-based WTR (Al-WTR) was the most effective achieving a 20 °C cumulative adsorbed concentrations (q_e) after 28 days of desorption of 63–76 mg PO₄/kg Al-WTR depending on the initial spiked concentration. When the isotherm temperature was 5 °C, Al-WTR effectiveness decreased. Ferric chloride WTR (Fe-WTR) was only effective when 0.6 mg/L of PO₄ was spiked to surface water with 0.01 mg/PO₄ stored at 20 °C yielding a 28 day cumulative q_e 5.67 mg PO4/kg Fe-WTR. At 5 °C, the cumulative q_e after extended desorption was 1–4.63 mg/kg Fe-WTR. Ferrous sulfate based WTR (Fe2-WTR) was not capable of adsorbing any additional PO₄ regardless of the spiked concentration or temperature.

Granulation of Drinking Water Treatment Residues: Recent Advances and Prospects

Beneficial reuse of drinking water treatment plant residues (WTRs) has been intensively studied worldwide in the last decades, but few engineering applications can be found. The majority of WTRs were directly reused in cake form (after dewatering), e.g., alum sludge cake as main substrate used in constructed wetlands (CWs), or oven dried and ground powdery form, e.g., sorbent for pollutant removal. However, WTRs reuse in such forms has several drawbacks, i.e., difficulty of recovering and easy clogging (in CWs), which result in limited WTRs engineering applications. Granulation or pelleting could widen and be a wiser WTRs reuse route and also seems to be a promising strategy to overcome the “application bottleneck” issues. In the literature, a number of trials of WTRs granulation have been reported since 2008, including sintering ceramsite, gel entrapment and newly emerged techniques. Hence, there is a need to overlook these studies and promote WTRs granulation for further development. To this end, this review firstly provides a piece of updated comprehensive information and critical analysis regarding WTRs granulation/pelleting technology. It aims to enhance WTRs granulation studies in the developing stage and thus enlarge WTRs engineering applications.
